Not a quake, just a burst pipe

By Emma-Jane McLennan A BURST water main on Bealey Ave yesterday sounded “almost like an earthquake,” sending water, mud and gravel flooding onto the street, a nearby motel owner said.

“We saw it actually happen, I was in the office talking to my wife then bang! It just happened, a crack opened in the concrete and water came gushing out,” said Ross Macleod (right), Bella Vista Motel owner.

PASSENGERS ON a plane in Brazil were forced to open the emergency exits as their flight prepared to take off – after an air conditioning fault left them stifling in 40 deg C heat.

The flight crew were about to leave the airport when the cabin crew and the passengers refused to travel – and opened the emergency doors in a desperate bid for fresh air.

Luckily for those on board, the plane was still on the ground.

Travellers were then stuck on the aircraft, meant to be flying from Rio de Janeiro to Sao Paulo, for an hour while they waited to be allowed off.

One passenger said they felt as though they were sitting inside a sauna. Another claimed that passengers were frustrated and losing their tempers, while one female passenger is reported to have fainted.

All travellers later boarded another fully-functioning aircraft.

More independence for Lily

LILY EXTON wants to stop growing.

The 13-year-old is 1.84m tall [just over 6ft] and she hasn’t stopped yet – a rare bone condition means she has abnormal growth, and makes walking for more than 50m very painful.

Independence is what she craves, but her family needs a specialist vehicle to transport her power wheelchair. Thanks to a kind-hearted neighbour, a Givealittle page has been set up to raise funds.

“It’s quite horrible to walk. I can’t go out by myself because someone has to push my manual wheelchair,” Lily said.

In spite of her health issues, Lily has a sunny personality and is usually very positive, mother Wendy Exton said.

“She’s amazing, she just takes

it in her stride. She does have moments when she’s down but she has a pretty amazing ‘can do’ attitude.”

Lily was born with Oto Spondylomega Epiphyseal Dysplasia – an extremely rare bone condition that means she is abnormally tall, her joints are misshapen making walking painful, and she is partially deaf.

There have been so few cases of the condition that doctors don’t know how tall she will get before she stops growing.

But her condition has got progressively worse since she was diagnosed at two-years-old, Mrs Exton said.

“She used to be a lot straighter when she was littler, but now she is more stooped because her spine has been fused. Her joints are also more restricted, then there’s the deafness as well.”

Sometimes people stare at her,

but Lily tries not to let it bother her.

“You just ignore them,” she said.

Lily’s mobility is restricted because her family vehicle doesn’t have a hoist, or enough room, to fit her power wheelchair.

She is picked up by a wheelchair taxi on the way to Avonside Girls’ High School in the mornings, which means she can use her power wheelchair to get around her classes.

But at home she can only walk 50m “on a good day”, and her manual wheelchair is the only option if she is going somewhere other than school.

“She needs someone to push her manual wheelchair. Her best friend is too short to see over the top and it would be so good for her not to have her mum, dad or sister push her,” Mrs Exton said.

Neighbour Jenny Payne, has set up a Givealittle fund for Lily, hoping to raise $20,000 for the kind

of vehicle and wheelchair hoist she needs.

“Lily would love to be able to visit the malls, go to the movies and do all the things a teenage girl should be able to do! We hope to raise enough money to buy a van that can be fitted with a power chair hoist for Lily’s family, to enable Lily and her family to live life to the fullest,” she wrote.

Mrs Exton says the family is very humbled by people’s generosity: “We don’t like to ask for help, and we haven’t before.”

Lily said she wants to go out with her friends once the family has the new vehicle.

“It’s pretty amazing, hopefully we will raise enough.”

DIGGING UP a significant early Maori site could cost Mike Greer Homes up to $40,000.

The company was yesterday convicted of non-compliance with the Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Act 2014, after digging a very well-known early moa hunter period site.

The company, which was engaged

by Arrow International (NZ) Ltd, dug through a 600-year-old significant early Maori site, NZME

reported yesterday.

It cut through previously unexcavated ground and disturbed “a charcoal-rich cultural layer containing shell, bone and fire cracked rock” while rebuilding at a quake-damaged site at Redcliffs.

Both firms put their hands up immediately after the mistake and the judge has praised the “extraordinary lengths” they took to right the wrong.

Dispute over city’s Kicking Back home rental prices

A CHRISTCHURCH social service group is disputing the latest Trade Me statistics, which show Christchurch rental prices have stayed almost static over the past year.

The figures show the median weekly rental price in Christchurch is $485 for three to fourbedroom houses, up just $5 from the numbers recorded in January last year.

That is less than the average 5.3 per cent rise across New Zealand.

Salvation Army Linwood manager Stephen Lapslie said the figures didn’t line up with the cases he worked with through services at the centre.

Many people reported that their rents were rising significantly, he said.

“We are finding that the rent has increased, and there is a major difficulty for people getting rental properties.”

Brazier Property Investments accounts manager Edmund le Grelle, who manages rents for about 900 properties across Christchurch, said the statistics lined up with general trends in the market.

He said average rent prices had risen significantly from early 2012, but had flattened off this year.

But he said that varied significantly between suburbs.

“Some suburbs might have had a lot of gain two years ago and started to flatten, and others may

The figures showed the average Christchurch rent rose by $20 during the year, reaching a peak of $500, but dropped again before the end of the year.

FOR RENT: Average rental prices across Christchurch have risen just $5 over the past year, according to the latest Trade Me statistics.

Prices for apartments climbed the most during the year, rising 15.2 per cent to an average of $380.

Small houses with one or two bedrooms rose the least, with prices staying static over the year at $350.

Trade Me Property head Nigel Jeffries said the situation for rentals was “chalk and cheese” compared to continuous pressure seen on the property market.

“Clearly many landlords are more focused on capital appreciation rather than yield.’’

Bain judicial review settlement

DAVID BAIN’S judicial review case against former Justice Minister Judith Collins has ended after the pair reached a settlement.

Current Justice Minister Amy Adams said Cabinet would resume considering Mr Bain’s compensation claim for wrongful conviction now the judicial review was over.

Mr Bain sought a judicial review

of Ms Collins’ actions after she rejected a report she commissioned from retired Canadian judge Ian Binnie into Mr Bain’s compensation claim.

Justice Binnie’s paper found Mr Bain was innocent on the balance of probabilities and recommended he be compensated for his 13 years in jail after being convicted of murdering his family.

of the Binnie report by Robert Fisher QC, who found the Binnie report was “fundamentally flawed”.

Mr Bain’s legal team argued during a preliminary hearing into the judicial review that Ms Collins predetermined his claim and exhibited bias.

Ms Adams said the deal struck between the two parties was confidential.

By Emma-Jane McLennan A PANDA snap-back cap, denim jacket, pink tutu and gumboots was the outfit of choice for two-and-a-half-year-old Vigge Gronlund-Moller at a visit to Hagley Park playground on Wednesday.

She would normally join her five-year-old brother, Konrad, in the paddling pool – but the rain had put her off, mother Gitte Gronlund-Moller said.

“We come here quite often and she would usually be in the paddling pool with Konrad,” she said, pointing to her son, splashing around in a wetsuit with some friends.

“He’s the blonde one,” she says.

Originally from Denmark, the Gronlund-Moller family moved to Christchurch in September for a six-month working stint.

“My husband has work here for six months so we came to Christchurch. It took us a while to find the good spots in the city, it’s so devastated, but this is definitely one,” she said.

Mrs Gronlund-Moller scooped her daughter onto her lap for a photo, but Vigge refused to smile.

Wonderful coastal escape A RELAXING coastal walk could be your perfect weekend escape – and a stunning stroll is on offer just 20-30 minutes from the central city.

A track around Lyttelton and bays offer beautiful views, popular picnic spots and swimming beaches.

Starting at the Lyttelton Information Centre, the walk meanders past the port and tunnel. It then follows the coastline to Magazine Bay, with views of Quail Island and boats docked in the harbour along the way.

It soon turns into a narrow dirt track which you can follow through to Corsair Bay, a popular beach for swimmers, which has a floating platform to dive off.

Cass Bay is usually quieter, and a good spot if you’d like to hire a kayak and explore the remaining bays from the water.

The walk takes about 45 minutes to an hour one way, but you can pack a picnic, take your togs and make a day of it.

The walk is classed as “easy,” with a little up and down around the hills.

Dogs are welcome but must be on leashes while at the beach.

Exotic ticks found on dogs

What does your perfect weekend look like Rosie?

Well that would be here in Governors Bay, waking up early and looking down to the harbour. It involves a swim in the local pool when the tide is out, and another at the beach when the tide is in. My husband and I go sailing sometimes on a lovely old Scandinavian boat - blue with a red sail - and the grandchildren will be involved if they’re around. I also love preparing a basket with wine, cheese and nibbles and walking along a track by the bay and watching the sun go down – either just the two of us or with a group of friends. Then we’ll go back to the house for a long, slow dinner.

And your favourite restaurant or cafe?

If I’m looking for somewhere casual and not too expensive, Bamboozle in Sumner, has great fresh tastes of Asian fusion. If it’s something a bit more special, Freemans in Lyttelton, is a good locally-owned place. My friend and I recently went to a whole lot of new places around the city, with a little nibble at each, and that was great fun. It cost $180 between the two of us and we spent the whole day.

I am a bit of a Coronation Street fan, the reason being I worked in the theatre for so many years and I love the scripting and very good acting in it. I was very disappointed in the new Broadchurch so I won’t be watching that, and I loved Downton Abbey but it’s gone now – and Anzac Girls.

What’s your favourite place in Christchurch?

In the city I love going to NG, it’s a beautiful old shop on Madras St. Then there’s the Botanic Gardens, and I love the peninsula –Taylors Mistake, Akaroa. There are so many great spots.

TWO DOGS in Canterbury have been found with potentially disease-carrying exotic ticks.

Seven adult ticks were found on two pet dogs in Rolleston.

Brown dog ticks (right) pierce the skin of their host and feed on blood.

They can carry and spread a handful of blood-borne diseases that can affect both animals and humans.

The ticks have since been killed and the dogs have been treated and confined to their home.

Ministry of Primary Industries response principal adviser Andre van Halderen said swift action was being taken to find out how the dogs could have picked up the ticks.

“We are currently unsure how these dogs were affected as the two pets were born in New Zealand, have never left the country and apparently have not ever come into contact with any imported animals.”

Dr van Halderen said none of the blood-borne diseases the ticks may carry are present in New Zealand.

Canterbury dog owners who believe they may have found brown dog ticks on their animals should phone MPI on 0800 80 99 66.

It’s slow but optimism over More than four years since the first of the Canterbury earthquakes rocked the city, progress in the central city is still slow. Reporter Gabrielle Stuart and photographer Geoff Sloan went exploring

THE SITE of the planned $20 million Margaret Mahy playground is overgrown: A lot of jungle, but no jungle gyms.

The Avon River Precinct was due to be finished by June, but has been pushed back a year, to mid-2016.

Work is under way on the river and walkways through the $95 million development, which will feature a river promenade, cycleways, the playground, a footbridge, an amphitheatre, an art trail and restoration of the river.

But the work around major inground electrical and telecommunications connections is proving more complex than first thought, Christchurch Central Development Unit acting director Baden Ewart said.

It’s not the only major project delayed.

City councillors announced last month they would like to delay construction of the $253 million stadium until 2025, because of the $1.2 billion city council budget shortfall.

Construction of the $217 million Metro Sport Facility was due to start in 2013, to be finished in early

2017, but completion date has been pushed back nearly a year because of the complexity of the project.

The land has been cleared and colourful signs on the fence around it showcase the big plans for the project – but there’s no sign of progress on the land, which is currently being leased out as a car park.

The Central Library, Cathedral Square and South Frame developments have also been delayed.

The delays are one reason developer Richard Diver has decided to retire this year.

He announced big plans for the Health Precinct last year, including a $150 million, five-storey private development on Oxford St. He hoped to have work under way before the end of the year, but is still negotiating with CCDU over the land.

Right now the precinct, which will stretch from Montreal St to the hospital, is overwhelmed by dingy, empty buildings.

If the plans have stalled, it’s not because he is slow off the mark.

He launched into negotiating inner city developments just days after the earthquakes, and has al-

“I’ve done a fairly big chunk of development, but I’ve found it a difficult process and it’s been enough for me.”

He said the development would be his last.

The University of Otago and Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology have said they are interested in building in the health

precinct, but have been held up by the CCDU land acquisition process.

That process could take years.

Part of the challenge, Christchurch Central MP and Canterbury Earthquake Recovery associate minister Nicky Wagner said, is that two thirds of the work has to be done before you see anything happen.

“The thing I have discovered through the rebuild is that nothing seems to happen for a long, long

time. But when you analyse, it the actual building is the icing on the cake.”

There were no rules around a disaster of the size of the earthquake, and there was a lot she had learnt through the process that she wished she knew at the beginning.

Foundation work for the $300 million Justice Precinct off Tuam St started last year, and it is on target for a 2017 opening.

Walk further along the river, toward the Re:Start mall and Retail Precinct, and things get busier.

Work stalled last year on Antony Gough’s The Terrace development because of rising costs, but has started again this month.

The biggest mistake in the rebuild, he said, was locking property owners out of the city for more than a year after the earthquakes.

“That was a disaster. The negative effect of that is that before it was open we didn’t really see anything happen, and it set us right back from the start. That was civil defence scared I might stub my toe on a brick.”

But he’s optimistic about the year ahead.

“There’s a lot happening in the central city that people don’t realise is happening,” he said.

He believed rebuild work would peak this year, and the delays to the anchor projects haven’t destroyed his confidence in them.

the central city prevails Across the road from The Terrace, Madlen Shaw’s cafe, Therapy, has been open for a month.

“A bit of banging,” is all the progress she has heard from nearby developments and the cafe is too far from the Re:Start mall to get many tourists, so business has been slow.

But she is optimistic.

Business has boomed at her restaurant in Addington, The Pedal Pusher, and she believes the new cafe can do just as well.

Looking out at the mass of steel, concrete and fencing outside the cafe, she smiles.

“When all this is done, I’m 100 per cent sure this will be a prime location.”

One block east, work is under way on the $140 million BNZ Centre, which will include office, retail and public spaces.

Developer Nick Hunt said the first stage of the development would be complete by November this year; the second at the same time next year.

But although he expected to see a lot of progress in the central city this year, he was more hesitant about the future.

“The cost of the rebuild means you can only build top-quality buildings. The cost of those is very high and number of tenants that can afford to pay those rents are not unlimited.”

“It may be that very little happens over the next 10 years, because fundamentally the demand for buildings in the central city is already used up.”

He said the delay in opening up the city had contributed to the problem, although he understood it had been a “major challenge” for Government.

But he was less quick to forgive changes to the blueprint plans and rules around developments, particularly in the green space city frame.

Plans were announced this month to shrink the South Frame and Innovation Precinct off St

Asaph St, because the land was too expensive.

There has been similar uncertainty around Cathedral Square.

Design of the square redevelopment is due to start next month, with construction scheduled for the first half of 2016.

But the Christ Church Cathedral site is owned by the Anglican Diocese, and a large amount of the $40 million insurance payout for it has been spent on the Transitional Cathedral, as well as protecting and deconstructing the current Cathedral.

If the central city is quiet, Cathedral Square is a ghost town.

In the north-west corner of the square, the site of the $500 mil-

lion convention centre, a shipping container sits in the middle of an empty block.

Development of the centre, which is being led by Ngai Tahu Property, Plenary Conventions NZ and The Carter Group, is expected to start this year, but won’t be finished until 2017.

A sculpture stands on the site of the Performing Arts Precinct, a collection of structures topped by what looks like giant toothpicks.

The planned precinct may not happen, because most of the music and theatre groups which were to be involved have moved to other parts of the city.

Across the road, the Camelot Hotel is fenced off and boarded up.

The city council is waiting for the go ahead from Government to build the new Central Library on the site, and construction is scheduled to start this year. Completion has been delayed six month, but is scheduled for 2017.

Mayor Lianne Dalziel is enthusiastic as she talks about it.

“To see things moving there, that’s pretty exciting, I have to say. I can’t say our library services are the best in the world, but they’ll be the best in the country at least.”

Although she was optimistic about the rebuild, she said she understood why some people had lost confidence in the central city vision.

She believed this year would be a “tipping point” for Christchurch.

Head back toward the Retail Precinct and you’ll come to The Crossing development, which is due to be complete by November this year.

Ashleigh Calder has a bird’s-eye view of the site from where she manages her team at Ello Cafe & Eatery, on the second floor of the Ballantynes Contemporary Lounge.

Things can be a bit bleak for young people in a broken city.

But no matter how many years it takes, she’s convinced the new city will be worth waiting for.

“We might have missed out on old Christchurch, but we’ll definitely get to experience the new,” she said.

Our People John & Carl Harrington Beer brewing runs deep Harrington’s Breweries has been part of the social fabric in Christchurch for nearly 24 years.

Reporter Andrew Voerman met John Harrington and his son, Carl, at their Parkhouse Rd site for a chat about how they got into the beer business, changes in the industry and where they get the names for their brews from.

So tell me, John, when did this all start?

John: We opened up on July 15, 1991, down on the corner of Fitzgerald Ave and Kilmore St. Forgive me, I mean when did you have your first beer?

J: I had my first 30 years living in Greymouth, along with mum and dad, and seven of us in the family, and it would have been the usual – when I was 16, 17-yearsold, I use to go into the Rec Hotel and have a few beers.

When did you come to Christchurch?

J: My wife Valerie and I came over with our two sons Craig and Carl, back in 1971 and went into the West Melton Tavern – that was our first venture into the liquor industry. We stayed there until 1975, came out of there, went into the Hillsborough Tavern and then the next thing was a partnership with Meredith Wilson at the Grenadier in the city. Then in 1986 I retired – I was only 45.

But that didn’t last long?

J: I wasn’t disgruntled about it, but waking up with nowhere to go wasn’t my style so I thought I’d do a little brewery as my hobby and that little brewery has grown into what it is now.

Why did you do it?

J: I felt I knew a bit about drinking beer, but also what the people of Christchurch and New Zealand and even the planet wanted in the way of a beer, and that’s why today our beers are being well-received.

What did you offer to begin with?

J: We started off with the lager, dark and draught four per cent type beers, but realised in a matter

of five to six weeks that I’d done it way too small, the demand was greater than the brewery could produce so that’s when we made steps straight away after only that short period to build a bigger brewery down in Ferry Rd, which was back in 1993, a huge building and I thought I’d be able to lease a third of this building out it’s so big.

Today, I wish it was six times bigger – that’s the sort of size building we need at the moment.

What does the business look like now?

J: We have currently seven bottle stores - the Ferrymead one was pushed over (in the quakes) and we have two breweries - this Parkhouse brewery and the Ferry Rd brewery still.

Do you have plans to keep growing?

J: We’re in a huge growing business frame of mind right now.

We’ve had a 10,000-litre brew plant built here, and we’re hoping in the next week or so, we’ll be able to put our first brew down.

Our current one at Ferry Rd does 7000 litres each time so we’ll have the capability of brewing a lot of beers very shortly.

How much beer do you produce each week?

Carl: Just under 30,000 litres a week.

J: Yeah, but when we get this plant here going we’ll be over 100,000 litres a week then.

Where do you get the names for your beers from?

C: We just sit around and all talk about them.

J: I get asked a lot about the latest one - ‘Yankdak’ - ‘Where’d you get that name from?’

Well we use American hops in it - that’s the word yank, and apparently dak is a street name for marijuana.

C: And obviously hops are in the same family of plant, so dak.

We banged that out in about half an hour.

Wobbly Boot, that explains itself. Big John (points to his dad).

Prince Harry (an alcoholic ginger beer) is self-explanatory?

C: Yeah, ginger. We haven’t had the Queen ring us yet and say we can’t use it.

Kind of fitting, isn’t it?

With the new drink-driving laws having been introduced in December, are you looking into the low-alcohol market at all?

J: We currently do a 2.5 per cent beer, but I’ve called head brewer Mark up and asked him to put down a no-alcohol beer whatsoever. He reckons it will be difficult but we’ll probably come up with a one per cent beer, and as long as it looks nice in a glass, with a nice crusty head on tip, I reckon there’ll

be a big demand for it, because a responsible guy, if he’s leaning on a bar having two or three 12-ounce glasses, that’s his limit, but if he wants to stay talking to his mates, then he’s got a one per cent beer to stay on with.

C: I’d rather go home for a five per cent-er (laughs).

And Carl, I understand you and your brother came back from Australia to help dad out?

C: I was on the Gold Coast and my brother Craig was in Perth and when dad rang up and said: ‘What are you boys doing?’ - ‘Oh, just working over here’ - ‘I’m going to do a brewery.’ We said: ‘We’ll be home tomorrow.’

So we were straight on the plane.

It was a good opportunity and 23 years on, we’re still doing it, enjoying it, and loving it.

Where’s Craig now?

C: He’s up in Nelson - he’s doing his own little project up there, still tied up with beer.

Have most of the team been around for a while?

C: Mark White, our head brewer, has been here 21 years. A lot of guys have been here five to eight years – they’ve seemed to join the team and stay with us, which is good for us.

That must be a good reflection on you guys?

C: It probably is, yeah. We’re pretty fair anyway.

J: I’d like to think so, yes.

C: Dad cooks toasties every morning for the staff at the Ferry Rd brewery. They all don’t bring their lunch because they know they’re going to get a free lunch, but when dad’s away they go hungry, What’s the biggest challenge you face?

C: Basically, just running out of beer. We’d like to supply our distributors with what they want, but we can’t, not at the moment, but we will be able to shortly. There’s a huge demand for our beers and ciders, but we just can’t. With our coming expansion, we’ll be able to get close to supplying them all.

J: Even with inquires we’ve had from offshore, whether it be Australia or other parts of the planet, we just have to say ‘shortly we’ll be able to carry on talking with you, but we can’t at the moment.’

C: But that will only last so long too.

Your family name is obviously out there a lot; do you get a sense of pride when you see it on a shelf or behind a bar?

J: I feel very proud of everybody that works in the team. I’m also very appreciative of the public of Canterbury for getting alongside us as a family, but I think a lot of that was formed when I was a publican.

I like to think we’d done a good job as publicans – Val and I – and the family and I have just carried on. The people of Christchurch have been wonderful.

You guys were crowned Champion Brewery of New Zealand at the Brewers Guild awards in 2012. How did that feel?

J: It was wonderful. I felt very proud of all the guys that have their input into it of course – the brewers and the staff. I felt very proud for them –

and us, of course.

You’re probably the biggest privately-owned brewery in New Zealand. Have you ever been approached about selling up?

C: We’ve had a couple of approaches, but we both said to have to turn up on Monday in a suit, or I think if we sold up we both said ‘what are we gonna do then?’

J: And imagine Carl, if we wanted to take home beer at night, we’d have to go and asked the board: ‘Can we take home some beer?’

We don’t have to at the moment, we just take it. The way it’s operating now, and the way it’s heading is very exciting.

Reactions I get over where I schooled

Emma-Jane WHEN PEOPLE ask me what school I went to, they’re usually shocked by the answer.

I have never been to school. Not for a single day in my life.

I was homeschooled instead.

Usually I don’t reveal this straight away, because if I do people will think I’m a.) a bit of a hippie-type, b.) so bad I got kicked out of school or c.) a social outcast.

I like to think I am d.) none of the above, so instead I keep it as a kind of a party trick, to casually slip into conversation and see what the reaction is.

What usually ensues is affectionately dubbed “the homeschooling quiz.”

It goes like this: “Do you have any friends?

Do you live in the country? Are you smart?”

The answers are: Yes, no, and then either I say I’m smart, and you’ll think I’m arrogant, or dumb and you’ll think I’m, well . . . dumb. I’ll leave that one for you to decide.

My parents decided to homeschool me when I was just a few years old. I grew up in Christchurch so there were plenty of schools around, but they thought it would give me, and my three sisters after me, a better start to life.

Most people haven’t met a homeschooler before, and I get that. You might think I’m one of a dying breed, lumped in with Little House on the Prairie, dinosaurs and other things that belong in museums.

Actually, homeschooling is a bit of a thing. There are hundreds of homeschoolers in Christchurch, and we like to organise classes, field trips and events.

I’ve been to a couple of homeschool formals (the last one was pretty swish – a DJ, cool lighting and glamorous red-carpet style ball gowns). We have homeschool camps where we get up to all kinds of crazy shenanigans, and I’ve done music classes, sports and learnt to blow things up in a chemistry lab.

My mum gave up work to look after us, and dad works from home so he is usually around to help teach tricky things – like math.

But rather than waste time on algebra, trigonometry and other things you won’t use after school, we’ve been taught how to invest in shares, choose an insurance policy and count Monopoly scores without a calculator.

Mum taught us to read, cook and sew – and anything we couldn’t learn at home we used books, the interwebs and classes to learn.

I loved it – no homework, lots of time to play with friends and we’d usually have everything done by noon.

And as for the “smart” question, a lot of homeschoolers go straight into university around 16. I know one who has started her own swim school business, another who toured New Zealand with a dance crew, and twins that are just months off finishing their law degrees.

But there are most certainly downsides: It’s pretty tricky to bunk school, and even harder to pull a sickie.

So there you have it, ladies and gents: I homeschooled. Shocking, I know.

I adore gardening – there’s nothing I’d rather do more.

Alas, like many others, I also have a day job, which is why it’s so important that when I do get a spare hour or two in the garden, I don’t waste it hunting for my gardening tools. Enter, the best piece of garden infrastructure I’ve ever built – my simple tool rack.

It holds up to 15 garden implements, fits onto a small space on the garage or garden shed wall (or even under the eaves of the house), and is so easy to construct.

I was wondering if you could help me with my blueberry bush as this year it has lost most of its leaves?

The fruit and flowers are still on the bush! Will this affect the fruit as it ripens? The bush is in a planter box and gets sun from about 12.30pm until about 6.00pm.

Blueberries will very quickly drop their leaves if the plant becomes stressed. It is possible the plant has dried out at some stage or has become waterlogged and has a root rot problem which can happen if the container has been sitting in water. Unfortunately you will need to remove all the fruit because the plant has gone into shock and trying to fruit now will add more stress and possibly kill it.

If the plant has dried out, begin watering it regularly and deeply, and modify to suit the conditions e.g. less water if lots of rainfall or more if drier weather. If the plant has been waterlogged, get the container up off the ground so water can drain out (little feet are available from your local garden centre). It would also be worth giving it a spray with a fungicide.

Finally, add a light side dressing of Daltons incredible edibles® Fruit & Berry Fertiliser. With reasonable care over the next few months the plant should re-clothe itself with new leaves.

BBQ sausages with Spanish mojo

BBQ lamb chops with Mediterranean salsa

Serves 4

Ingredients 2 slices Soft white bread, crusts removed 5 Tbsp Olive oil 4 cloves Garlic, crushed 1 tsp Chilli flakes 2 tsp Cumin seeds 2 tsp Smoked paprika 2 Tbsp Sherry, or balsamic vinegar, use more to taste 8 spicy Sausages, Directions To make mojo (sauce), pan-fry bread on both sides in a little olive oil, until golden and crisp. Drain on paper towels. Chop into pieces.

Place in a blender with garlic, chilli flakes, cumin seeds, smoked paprika and 2 tbsp of vinegar. Blend until smooth. Add extra olive oil and vinegar to taste.

Prick sausages once with fork and place in frying pan. Cover with warm water. Slowly bring to a simmer. Poach sausages, turning occasionally, for 10 minutes. Cool, then remove skins. Cut each sausage into 4 or 5 pieces. Thread 3-5 pieces on to skewers.

Brush with a little mojo. Barbecue on medium heat for about 5 minutes, turning often and brushing with a little more mojo. Serve when hot and sizzling. Extra mojo can be served on the side.

Apricot and cream cheese tarts Kaffir lime chicken breast Serves 4

1 Tbsp Fish sauce, (look for ‘made in Vietnam’ on the bottle) 1 Tbsp Sesame oil 1 tsp Flaky sea salt 4 Chicken breasts, small size, approx 150g each

sauce, sesame oil and salt.

Add the chicken breasts and rub the marinade all over the chicken. Cover and leave in the fridge for a few hours.

Barbecue or cook under the grill for 5-7 minutes on each side. Rest for 3 three minutes before slicing.

Serve with steamed long grain rice and mango papaya salad.

Ingredients 1½ sheets Butter puff pastry 3 Tbsp Cream cheese 3 tsp Brown sugar 410g Apricot halves 1 Egg 1½ Tbsp Apricot jam Directions Preheat oven to 200 deg C. Cut pastry sheets into 6 squares and place on a cold oven tray.

Directions Heat a barbecue or grill on high. Brush the lamb cutlets all over with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Barbecue or grill for 2 to 3 minutes on each side until the lamb is browned and cooked to your liking.

To make Mediterranean salsa, coarsely dice sun-dried tomatoes and olives and combine with the remaining ingredients in a small bowl and toss well.

Remove lamb to a serving platter and scatter with salsa to serve.

Combine the cream cheese and brown sugar, then stuff into apricot cavities. Arrange 3 apricot halves in the centre of each piece of pastry, cavity side down.

Twist corners of pastry and brush with egg.

Bake the tarts for 10 to 12 minutes until pastry is golden.

Place a teaspoon of apricot jam over the centre of each tart before serving them warm or at room temperature.

INSTANT REPLAYS are an essential part of watching sports.

We use them for a wide variety of reasons - to break plays down, to catch something we missed, or to admonish referees for what they missed, even though they had to decide in real time – those are just some of the many uses we’ve found.

They’re so commonplace these days, you’d assume they’ve just always been there, and you’d be wrong.

They were invented by a man named Tony Verna, who died this week in California, aged 81, and it was thus that I learned what he’d done.

His moment of inspiration came in December 1963, when he was directing an American college football game between Army and Navy, being played in Philadelphia.

He called for the replay in order to show again a touchdown by Army quarterback Rollie Stichweh.

Robinson settles into Crusaders squad

The new Crusaders hooker and the former Crusaders lock were teammates in Dunedin this time last year, and it is thanks to Thorny that Robinson is now preparing to pull on the red and black.

“I was down at the Highlanders and me and Thorny had a chat about where I was going and what I wanted to. I wanted to still be an All Black and at that stage I wasn’t playing a lot for the Highlanders and he thought that coming here would be a good opp for me and I think he rated me good enough to put a good word in for me with (Crusaders forwards coach) Dave Hewett.”

He had no qualms about making the move, something he’s had to do on a few occasions – the Crusaders will be the fourth Super Rugby side he’s played for, after the Highlanders, the Rebels in Melbourne, and the Hurricanes.

“It’s my fourth side, I wouldn’t say I’m happy about it, but I’m used to moving around. It’s like starting a new job again, so there’s always the nervous starting and meeting everyone but you realise after a few days, boys are boys and it’s a good team and everyone’s happy to have you around.”

He likened the team to a highschool classroom, with everyone taking on various stereotypical roles, but wasn’t sure which one was his.

“I’m the experienced veteran that sits at the back almost now, but I don’t know if I like that. I think that’s just put on me because I’m over 30.”

“The big thing here is the demand on excellence. I think everyone strives for it but I think the Crusaders kind of live it. That’s probably the big thing I’ve noticed coming here and it’s been good and refreshing for me, to try and help my game as well.”

Robinson will be fighting with youngsters Ben Funnell and Codie Taylor for the starting hooker’s role left vacant when Corey Flynn headed to France at the end of last season.

He said the pair would be helping him as much as he would be helping them, but they were all vying to be the one pulling on the No 2 jersey come February 13 and the Crusaders’ first game.

“I think they’ll probably be offering me more here just because I’m learning the patterns that they’ve been involved with the last few years.’’

Sport One trick left

By Andrew Voerman ONE MORE rabbit out the hat is all the Canterbury Magicians need.

They host the Auckland Hearts in the women’s domestic one-day final at Mainpower Oval in Rangiora on Sunday, looking to put the finishing touch on their season.

These two sides have accounted for the last four titles – the Hearts last year and in 2012, the Magicians in 2013 and 2011.

When these teams met during the round robin in Lincoln at the end of December, the Magicians won both games Amy Satterthwaite comfortably, leapfrogging their northern rivals and putting themselves on course to have the final played at home.

Coach Richard Pithey said having home advantage would be a big boost for his side.

“It is definitely a big thing – that was one of the things that we really made a big effort with – to finish top and then get a home final.

“That’s obviously the first step but there’s still a long way to go. Our plans have worked all season, but

The Magicians have had a few extra training sessions this week, and are wary that with only one game this weekend, rather than the three in the three days they’ve been playing all season, they’ll need to be ready to go from ball one.

“What we’ve really tried to do is have a big focus on scoring big totals and I think that’s going to remain the same. If we bat first, we need a big total, if we’re batting second we need to chase. At the end of the day, our top five have batted well, either in unison or individually, and that’s enabled the lower order to come in and play with a bit of freedom.”

Those batting performances have been led by captain Amy Satterthwaite, who has scored the most runs of anyone in the competition, with 770, and is averaging 110, with three

centuries to her name.

“It’s been a pretty exceptional season,” she said.

“I think further down the track I’ll look back on it and appreciate it a bit more, but it’s certainly enjoyable and I think the biggest thing has been trying to relax and enjoy what I’m doing.

“Cricket can bring you down to earth pretty quickly if it isn’t going well, so when it’s going well you want to enjoy it.

“Ultimately I’m just trying to perform for the team and get wins for the team and so far that’s been happening.”

Satterthwaite said the team’s wins over Auckland last month should stand them in good stead for Sunday’s encounter.

“I think we have to take a bit of confidence from the way we beat them during that round robin, and the way we’ve played all season as well.”

The Magicians suffered their first defeat since the opening round on Saturday against the Northern Spirit in Hamilton, which Satterthwaite said was a timely reminder of how quickly their fortunes could change.

“At the end of the day it’s one match – so we’ve just got to go and back our ability and what we’ve been doing all season – we don’t want to change.”

Canterbury United, led by captain Tom Schwarz (right), will be looking to bounce back from last weekend’s 3-4 loss to WaiBOP United when they travel to Dunedin to play Southern United on Sunday. They are one of six teams within two points of each other, chasing two of the four spots in the playoffs.
