‘Kidnapper’ nabbed after victim films him

By Kyle Knowles

A QUICK-THINKING victim of an attempted kidnapping used her cellphone to help police catch the alleged attacker yesterday. The 37-year-old, was walking along Marine Parade by Thomson Park in North New Brighton, when a navy blue 1994 Nissan Avenir station wagon pulled up

next to her. A man started talking to her and beckoned her to get into the vehicle with him. He then allegedly tried to grab her after she refused to get into the vehicle. Sergeant Dave Robertson said the woman believed the man was attempting to pull her into the vehicle

but she managed to break free. She was then able to begin filming the vehicle with her mobile phone including the licence plate. When the alleged attacker realised this he drove from the scene at speed. The woman then went to the New Brighton police station immediately. Police patrols were given the

licence plate number and the vehicle was located within an hour. The alleged attempted kidnapping happened about 8.45am. Said Sergeant Robertson: “She was distressed and shaken. She had family and close support with her almost immediately.” He said the woman did not know him.

Police have concerns the man may have been in the Marine Parade area leading up to this alleged incident. A 38-year-old man will appear in the district court on Tuesday charged with attempted kidnapping. • If you have information or seen anything, phone the police on 363 7670.
