Buck blasts Parker regime
SCHOOL’S OUT . . .
Time for fun
By Gabrielle Stuart
DEPUTY MAYOR Vicki Buck has slammed Bob Parker’s council for their handling of the city’s finances. She called the financial decisions made by Mr Parker’s council “astonishing” in a Facebook post on Monday. The post was made in response to concerns raised by ratepayers about the proposed sale of assets to help meet the city council’s $1.2 billion earthquake rebuild shortfall. She blamed Mr Parker’s council agreeing to anchor projects without knowing they could do them, agreeing to pay its share of the cost share agreement “regardless of insurance outcomes”, investing in Enable, and “taking huge risks” by insuring with Civic Assure. “This, combined with the huge spend on horizontal infrastructure, means that we can not borrow enough to do all the things that need doing,” she said. Mr Parker did not return calls yesterday to The Star about Ms Buck’s criticism. Ms Buck’s comments were not supported by Mayor Lianne Dalziel yesterday. She told The Star: “I do not endorse criticism of the previous council, as I would prefer to look forward and not back. • Turn to page 2
Riccarton High School student Abbey Meiritz-Reid piggybacks classmate Elana Martin at Sumner Beach yesterday. The two celebrated the end of year 9 studies with friends at the beach, going for a swim before the weather changed and rained. The rain will continue this morning and ease in the afternoon.
