Crusaders hit the beach
By Gabrielle Stuart
LEFT-LEANING city councillors are likely to support partial sales of assets, in spite of a pre-election pledge to keep them “in the ownership of the people.” Six of the 14 city council members are part of The People’s Choice group, and campaigned on keeping assets such as Christchurch International Airport, Lyttelton Port, Red Bus and City Care and Orion in council ownership. They now look poised to renege on that pledge when the city council holds a special meeting on Friday to discuss how to get the city out of a $800-900 million debt hole. The Star quizzed People’s Choice councillors yesterday about where they now stood. Andrew Turner said he would “reluctantly” support some asset sales. He said People’s Choice councillors’ first option would be to sell nothing, but they didn’t want to be “the handbrake on the city’s ability to move on.” In The People’s Choice pledge, they promised “our port, airport, electricity network, city housing and other strategic assets remain in the ownership of the people.” •Turn to page 2
