Group formed to oppose road upgrades

BY GRACE CABELL St Albans residents concerned about road upgrades to the area are taking a stand.

A group called the Northern Arterial Extension and Cranford St Upgrade Action Group has been made opposing the road changes.

At the Shirley-Papanui Community Board meeting this Wednesday representatives from the St Albans Residents’ Association will also attend to give the community board their views on the road upgrades.

to upgrade the Northern Arterial Extension and Cranford St to ease travel to and from areas north of the city.

As part of the project the city council would increase capacity by widening a 700m stretch of Cranford St, north of its intersection with Innes Rd to four lanes.

Residents’ association cochairwoman Emma Twaddell said if the plan was to go ahead there would be no going back for the effect it would have on St Albans.

“The plan is faulty,” she said.

Cathedral Grammar School pupils went out the gate and off walking with their four-legged friends at the school’s annual pet day. The event was held on Friday, November 2 with pupils and their canines competing in the dog show.

She said residents were finding it difficult to handle as there was no plan for public transport to go with it in the upgrade.

Environment Canterbury public transport manager David Stenhouse said route 28 connecting thoroughfare from the north into the city would still be placed along Main North and Papanui Rds. “One advantage of the northern arterial is that it will reduce traffic volume on Main North and Papanui Rds and therefore make public transport more reliable,” said Mr Stenhouse.

He said a possible risk would be if route 28 could not continue through Edgeware it would have to travel to Bealey Ave on Cranford/Sherbourne Sts, which would be subject to peak time congestion south of Innes Rd. He said there was also the risk of changing the Orbiter routes via Innes and Cranford Sts which could make the service less reliable.

The group, which currently has 37 members, planned to work together on ways to place submissions to the city council.

Public consultation for the project would close on December 19.

Mrs Twaddell said the group had requested an extension of time for public consultation but was declined by the city council.

Repairs to the Fendalton Rd bridge have been delayed until the New Year.

The Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team had scheduled the repairs for the bridge to start in November but the Christchurch Transport Operations Centre has asked for this to be postponed. The centre wants to keep the bridge open to all traffic

and not down to one lane as planned. Roadworks will now take place in early 2015.

Teacher awarded Our Lady of Fatima School teacher Suzanne Newton has been awarded an Advanced Classroom Expert Teacher Award. The award aims to recognise expert classroom practitioners.

Bishopdale residents are fearful the new Metro bus changes will leave them isolated.

Four new high frequency services will be introduced across greater Christchurch as Environment Canterbury changes 75 per cent of the Metro network.

The new bus services will arrive at Northlands Shopping Centre, Redwood, Avonhead and Halswell.

But Bishopdale Community Trust development worker Tania Smith said the she was disappointed with the changes.

“We’re really concerned about Bishopdale being pushed off the map,” she said.

In May the Nor’West News spoke to Ms Smith, who said the proposed change may leave the community without its own route.

Residents have placed more than 165 submissions to the city council in a bid to improve bus services in the area.

The group had been lobbying for the Orbiter route to go through the suburb since it was first introduced, to connect Bishopdale to more bus routes.

Ms Smith said she was now worried the Comet, which had been extended to go through Halswell

Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board chairwoman Val Carter said it was something the group had been fighting for years.

“It’s not better for them,” she said.

Mrs Carter said she was worried about the residents living on the smaller side streets, who she said would be most affected.

“It’s more difficult for them to use the new routes and they still have to change buses,” she said.

Mr Williams said the new network would appeal to a wider group of potential passengers and provided ECan with an opportunity to grow the use of public transport.

New RSA president plans a new The newly-elected national president of the Royal New Zealand Returned Services Association is planning a quiet revolution of the iconic RSA movement.

Christchurch’s Barry John (BJ) Clark wants all RSAs to become even more effective and relevant to today’s members and for generations to come.

Mr Clark joined the New Zealand Army as a regular force cadet 44 years ago intent on a career as a carpenter/joiner.

The cadet school in Waiouru was established to identify the future leaders.

At the time it would not have known the future leader of the RSA was in the class of 1970.

Mr Clark spent 21 years in the New Zealand Army serving in Singapore, Fiji, the Antarctic and the Sinai Peninsula.

He said one experience that stood out was the six months he spent in Moscow helping to refurbish the New Zealand Embassy.

“We lived in the basement, often covered in dust. Our job was to make the embassy secure. It’s a memory I’ll always have,” Mr Clark said.

He said another defining moment was seeking out the British War Grave cemeteries in Sinai – the resting place of hundreds of Kiwis who fought there during World War 1.

“My goal is to lead a quiet revolution of attitudes – changing the way Kiwis see the RSA, bringing associations together to share their strengths, showing New Zealand that we welcome them into the RSA movement and championing our current service personnel as well as our veterans.”

He said the revolution had already begun.

Last month the RSA launched its national association – a new online based RSA for current service personnel who move frequently.

The service would also benefit Kiwis of all ages and backgrounds who did not currently have an RSA connection.

The national association allowed users to access RSAs in New Zealand and RSL clubs in Australia.

It also provided them with a club card which granted exclusive benefits and deals through a range of quality trusted brands.

In its most recent online annual report, the RSA showed membership was stable, with some clubs reporting an increase.

Revenue streams have improved and the Veterans Support Act, providing a new basis for Government support for veterans, was passed in Parliament.

“There was so much sadness reading the names of soldiers and not a dry eye anywhere. They were so far from home and unable to be brought back. I thought of the sacrifices they made in the desert,” he said.

He was also a member of the United Nations multi-national force that helped maintain the peace in the Middle Eastern hot spot.

Mr Clark left the army in 1991 as a warrant officer and senior trades instructor.

“The army shaped me. It taught me skills, leadership, camaraderie, how to accept differences in people and work with them,” he said.

In 1998 Mr Clark became the Papanui RSA president.

From there he was appointed Canterbury district president and then national vice president in 2008.

Mr Clark said in his new role he wanted to emphasise the new attitude as the RSA approached a second century of service.

“The spirit of Anzac saw our men and women look out for and support each other and come together in comradeship. A hundred years later I want that same attitude to be enhanced in RSAs throughout New Zealand,” he said.

revolution Rebuild a step forward

As the RSA approaches its own centenary in 2016, Mr Clark said its work was as vital as ever.

“While we still have men and women who put themselves in harm’s way to serve their country, we have a role to play in looking after them and providing support,” he says.

Mr Clark had been impressed with the resurgence of interest by young

people in the milestones leading up to and including the early involvement of New Zealand in World War 1.

“We’ve seen young New Zealanders attending Anzac Day ceremonies in increasing numbers. Many are honouring their family members. Now we want to attract them to an RSA that is relevant and alive,” he said.

Looking to the future, the RSA had begun planning its own centenary for 2016.

Plans for a permanent community centre and library in Bishopdale are finally moving forward.

A working group is being set up to oversee where the Bishopdale Community Centre and Library will be placed.

The project is in the process of being signed off by the city council to establish boundaries with the proposed communications strategy under development.

The facility was closed following the earthquakes when an engineering evaluation showed its seismic capacity was only four per cent of the building standard.

The proposed working group would include community board members, staff and community representatives.

Feedback to enable how much the group would be able to involve in would be discussed at a FendaltonWaimairi Community Board meeting on December 15.

Community board chairwoman Val Carter said the board wanted to make the process as streamline as possible.

Since its closure a temporary library had been operating in Bishopdale Mall.

Bishopdale Community Trust development worker Tania Smith said the main message to arise from submissions was that people wanted the library back.

She said the city council had considered placing it back in its original spot.

“A big part of having the library there is that it generated a lot of foot traffic in the area. To have the library back there would really help businesses,” she said.

On September 4 Mayor Lianne Dalziel announced the city council had committed more than $40 million to fast-track the repair and rebuild of priority community and heritage facilities across the city and Banks Peninsula.

A total of $4 million had been allocated to the Bishopdale Community Centre and Library rebuild.

More than $6000 has been raised for a seven-year-old Paparoa Street School pupil with a brain tumour.

In May this year Maddy Nicol thought she had ended her battle with cancer.

After she was diagnosed with a brain tumour in March 2013.

Maddy finished her chemotherapy and was in remission until August this year when routine tests showed a new tumour had formed in her brain.

On November 20 an auction HOPE: Maddy holds a string of beads was held by family friend and representing her different treatments, sales consultant Leah de Friez blood tests and nights in hospital. to raise money for further

treatment for the young girl.

Cakes and other items were sold in more than 50 lots at the auction.

Ms de Friez said attendance was at capacity.

She said Maddy’s mother Rachel had to quit her job as a motel housekeeper in order to look after the young girl.

“I haven’t been able to work for two years,” said Mrs Nicol.

She said she was amazed at how much money was raised.

“It was a real shock, we weren’t expecting it at all,” she said.

Ms de Friez said the family were humble people who would never ask for the money.

“The reason for the auction was to try and support the family with the costs - if you have a little girl with chemo every day you can’t go back to work,” she said.

An MRI scan in two weeks time would determine whether the tumour had grown or shrunk.

“We’re hugely grateful to Leah, our wider community and the school,” said Mrs Nicol.

Kiwi house gets funding for lights Funding has been received to upgrading the lighting in the nocturnal kiwi house at Willowbank Wildlife Reserve.

A $6835 grant was donated by the Mazda Foundation to the New Zealand Conservation Trust at the reserve in Harewood.

The new lighting has made the enclosure as close to the kiwi’s natural environment as possible.

It will also enhance visitors’ experiences as they watch the

birds forage for worms among trees, grasses and plants.

NZCT resource and education co-ordinator Janet Hellyer said the trust was grateful to the foundation for the grant as it was an important job to protect the national icon.

Young athlete receives grant Strowan coach and athlete Caitlin Dore is one of eight young Cantabrians who received grants last week to help them achieve their goals.

At 18, Caitlin has already earned several medals and records as an international competitor, coach and mentor in javelin, shot put and discus.

Born with cerebral palsy, Caitlin is the only para athlete in the Canterbury high performance Pathway to Podium squad for athletes with Olympic potential.

She received a third placing for javelin in Queensland this year, and was named the Canterbury Para Athlete of the year.

She is determined to compete in the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, and will use the Inspire Foundation grant to step

Scouting booms in Flockton Basin Scouting is on the rise for members in the Flockton Basin.

In the St Matthews LLO Scout Group, St Albans numbers have hit more than 70 members.

Assistant group leader Stuart Birnie said before the earthquakes the members reached up to 120.

“That’s when we were really booming,” he said.

After the earthquakes the group took a massive hit to its numbers, dropping to around 50 members.

“But now it is really building back up again,” he said.

He said even though the group was in the flood-prone area it had stood up well.

Three group members Liam Helleur, Samuel Robb, Mark Cumming have also received the Chief Scout Award.

This award was only handed out to those who achieved the requirements.

Scouts could complete their bronze, silver, gold and Chief Scout Award.

Venturer Scouts then move on to the highest level - the Queen’s Scout Award, which is presented at Government House.

All three award winners have started in the Kea or Cub section and moved through to the Scout section.

The group was one of the oldest consecutively-running groups in New Zealand, formed in 1921.

Harewood Primary awarded for green work

Sparrow clubs thrived

PROUD: Harewood Primary School has received three awards at the annual Keep Christchurch Beautiful awards ceremony held on November 20. The school received a school environment award with waste minimisation and recycling endorsement, a community pride award and a caretakers award. It is the 20th year the school has participated in the School Environmental Enhancement Programme which recognises the contributions schools are making to promote environmental sustainability.

Harewood Primary currently has three worm farms, compost bins, hens, and each class has a vegetable garden. School Eco Green team members Ethan, Lucy, and Jessica received the awards on the school’s behalf.

Yes, Papanui had a thriving sparrow club between the late 1870s and the mid-1890s.

Sparrow clubs were formed all round the country modelled on clubs set up in England from the mid-1850s.

Meetings were held in the local hotel for males only, set up to reduce the number of sparrows that were devastating crops.

At the meeting in September 1879, held at the Sawyers Arms Hotel, the subscription list showed 61 paid-up members and the distribution of poisoned grain was going well.

November 1 was the date set to start gathering eggs and young birds.

The price per dozen was one and a half pence for eggs and three pence for young birds.

At the January 1880 meeting it was reported the club had paid for 26,978 eggs and 3857 heads.

The young lads in the district found this a great way to earn some pocket money, with many pleasurable hours spent out in the paddocks and along the hedgerows.

St Andrew’s recognised WINNERS: St Andrew’s College rector Christine Leighton, Outdoor New Zealand board member Arthur Sutherland and St Andrew’s outdoor education head of department Peter Dawkings with this year’s Outdoors New Zealand Organisation Award won by the school.

Staff at St Andrew’s College have won this year’s Outdoors New Zealand Organisation Award.

The school’s outdoor education department has won the award for its programme at the Castle Hill Outdoor Centre.

The award was given to head of department Peter Dawkings and the school’s Castle Hill facility for exceptional processes for health and safety, sustainability, community engagement and bicultural awareness.

The Castle Hill complex

had grown with the outdoor education programme and other key annual activities such as school camps and the Duke of Edinburgh excursions.

The programme hosted year groups from preparatory and secondary schools.

It was also hired out to other schools for expeditions and outdoor education trips.

St Andrew’s facility at Castle Hill was opened in 1965 by then rector Ian Galloway and underwent a complete rebuild in 2008.

Prestigious awards for students Students at St Andrew’s College were well represented at the Duke of Edinburgh ceremony hosted by the school in November.

At the ceremony Governor General Sir Jerry Matapare presented a number of awards to students from Christchurch schools.

Eleven year 13 students from St Andrew’s have received gold Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Awards this year.

To gain the award, students were required to complete a 12-month physical and skills component one three night and one four night expedition.

Each student was also required to complete 12 months of volunteering.

School head of values and culture Hamish Bell said it was great to see so many senior students achieving the gold award.

“I can only see this number growing as more students graduate from our Te Waka programme where students complete their bronze Duke of Edinburgh award in year 10.”

“It’s a fantastic achievement to complete while still at school and requires a lot of dedication and hard work,” he said.

Prison team help bowling club A prison work party helped spruce up the Fendalton Bowling Club for the international event held there over the last week.

The Rolleston Prison work party has been helping the Fendalton Bowling Club maintain its buildings and gardens for three years.

This year was extra special because the club hosted the World Bowls Singles Champion of Champions last week.

This international event is held every year, is broadcast across the world and features the singles champions from 30 countries vying for the title of champion of champions.

Rolleston Prison manager Mike Howson said “It is important to club members that the club looks as good as it can for this important event and we were very happy to help the club with this.

“We have been going to the Fendalton Bowling Club regularly for about three years and in this time, the offenders and staff have met and even worked alongside a number of club members while undertaking various projects at the site, he said.

Fendalton Bowling Club vice president Alastair Stokes said the club would be falling apart without the help

“With an ageing population and volunteer labour more difficult to access, many of the jobs the prison work party help us with would be outside our physical and financial abilities,” Mr Stokes said.

Corrections officer Lyonal Williams accompanies prison work parties to wide ranging community projects across Canterbury.

“The prisoners really enjoy making a difference, for those prisoners who have become institutionalised, work in the community, like that done for the bowling club, is hugely important.

“No one wants to mess it up, the offenders really appreciate the opportunity to make a difference. Through these experiences they are learning to work alongside others as a team and developing socialising skills,” Mr Williams said.

Mr Stokes said the club appreciates the work done by the prison team and vice versa.

“Club members working with the prison team have enjoyed their company and interacting with them. We are privileged to have this hard-working group helping to make our club run.”

High speed action at Woodford Glen Just one show remains before Woodford Glen Speedway takes a break for the Christmas period, and it is one not to be missed.

Value Cars Warehouse presents the DHL Saloon Speedweek plus Superstock teams race between the Nelson Tigers and the BRT Glen Eagles.

Auto dismantlers use gas cutting devices to remove some of the parts from the vehicles they are wrecking.

Occasionally something goes a bit wrong and the vehicle ignites.

From what I understand this is usually quickly righted by the use of a fire extinguisher.

Unfortunately for workers at a dismantling shop in Cranford St on Monday the fire that occurred in a vehicle included petrol and rapidly filled the building with black smoke.

The staff made a hasty exit as flames reached the ceiling.

I visited the premises on Tuesday afternoon.

The building should have been a smoking wreck. It wasn’t.

Other than the fire-damaged car pushed to one side it was business as usual.

Engines were being removed, panels disassembled.

Why? Because the building had a sprinkler system.

A single sprinkler head had quickly reached operating temperature and set itself off.

It put the fire out.

Police hunt for wanted man Armed police raided a Kaiapoi house on Thursday for wanted man Christopher David Roche.

Canterbury police, including the Armed Offenders Squad and police dogs and handlers searched two properties on November 27 for the 35-year-old.

Christopher Police first David Roche searched a house in Wigram at 6.30am, before turning their attention to Kaiapoi later in the day.

Mr Roche was not located so at 1.30pm police cordoned off a property in Kaiapoi which was searched at about 3.45pm.

The AOS attended and secured both addresses as police believed there was potential for a firearm to have been at the properties.

Loud bangs were heard in the area at the time of the search. Police said they were caused by gas being deployed by the AOS to secure and clear the property.

Fire and ambulance services were at the Kaiapoi address as standard precaution.

Mr Roche was not located at the second property and police investigations would continue.

Police ask anyone with information or any sighting of Mr Roche and have said to not approach him.

A hero honoured

Kaiapoi man Brent Cairns is one of 24 Cantabrians honoured as a local hero.

As part of the Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year Awards 2015, 24 winners of the Local Heroes category were presented awards at a medal presentation ceremony at Addington Raceway.

A total of 201 medals will be presented nationwide, with one national Local Heroes winner to be announced at the New Zealander of the Year Gala Awards in Auckland in February next year.

Mr Cairns could almost be called a professional volunteer in the Kaiapoi community.

For the past 10 years he has been a volunteer firefighter with the New Zealand Fire Service, a volunteer ambulance officer with St John and a spokesman and advocate for the Wider Earthquake Communities Action Network.

He has been instrumental in delivering the Get Firewise programme to several schools in the Kaiapoi region.

He is also volunteer trainer with the Combined Adolescent Challenge Training Unit and Support programme and a volunteer trainer with the R13 Trust, who provide alternative education and skill development opportunities to youth.

In spite of losing his home to the earthquakes his dedication to his community has not faltered.

ing thanks to these fine people,” he said.

The national winner of the Local Heroes award will be selected from three finalists, who will also attend the New Zealander of the Year Gala Awards.

The judging panel – comprising representatives of the awards, patrons, presenters, sponsors, community leaders and independent experts – will announce the 10 Local Heroes semi-finalists this month.

The three finalists will be announced next year.

1 Preheat oven to 200°C. Spray each filo pastry sheet with oil and layer on top of each other. Fold pastry in half to make a rectangle six layers thick.

Spray rectangle.

2 Place the pastry on a lightly greased baking tray. Fold in the pastry edges to make a 1 1/2cm border. Warm jam and spread on pastry base. Bake for five minutes.

3 Add peaches to the pastry base then brush with melted spread. Bake for 10 minutes. Add raspberries. Sprinkle with sugar. Cook for a final five to 10 minutes until filo is golden brown.

Serve sliced with a mint garnish.

Plant yourself a cosmos floral fiesta

These days, garden design seems to be all about simple foliage and clean lines.

As much as I admire the contemporary look, sometimes I prefer a bit of wild flower-like personality in my back yard. That’s where the easy-to-grow cosmos comes in to play.

Bursting with hot summer colours and growing to around 1m tall, cosmos are no shrinking violets.

In fact, I love the way they sway gently in any summer breeze.

These devil-may-care flowers also come with easy growing instructions, thriving in the heat of summer and flourishing almost anywhere, as long as it’s hot, dry and sunny.

I’ve learned to give my cosmos plenty

of admiring glances during the warmer months as, like all annuals, they germinate, flower and die within a season or a year. But don’t fret – they also pop up again each following year.

For me, cosmos look best when grown en masse, creating a sea of countrycottage colour. So, I recommend getting your hands on as many seedlings as you can afford.

Once you’ve found a good spot and you’re ready to plant these American natives, add a good general fertiliser, like nitrophoska blue, to the soil to encourage growth.

Then simply dig a hole (approximately 3cm deep) and place your seedling inside. Plant each subsequent seedling about 10cm apart, giving them space to

grow but ensuring they’re close enough to support each other in strong winds.

Next, layer newspaper around your plants, and then cover it with peastraw.

This homemade mulch will prevent your plants drying out during the day and in between watering sessions.

Voila – you’ll have a cosmos floral fiesta in no time, and get to enjoy an array of colour until the first frost hits, usually around June.

And if you really want to bring the outside in, just a handful of these longstemmed beauties look great in a tall vase (just don’t forget to put them in a cool place and change the water every two to three days). You’ll be thanking yourself for adding a bit of country colour at your place.

Things to do in December garden General ■ Raise blades on your mower so you don’t scalp your lawn and kill off the grass.

■ Holiday-proof your plants by ensuring that they’re well mulched.

■ Although well-mulched garden beds will stay moist for long periods, pots can dry out in just one hot day. Move pots into more shade and group them to keep each other cool.

Fruit ■Water and fertilise fruit trees to ensure

bumper crops and spray pip and stone fruit to prevent fungus diseases.

■ Feed and water citrus and check for naughty bugs and slugs.

■ Trim excessive grapevine growth.

Flowers and ornamentals ■ Stake your sunflowers.

■ Feed flowering annuals and perennials with liquid fertiliser and apply a side dressing of general fertiliser to flowering shrubs.

■ Sow Cosmos seeds direct into garden beds and by late summer the plants will

be in full display. Cosmos make great cut flowers.

Vegetables ■ Stake tomatoes securely, remove laterals, feed, and water regularly. Apply side dressing of blood and bone or general garden fertiliser ■ Mulch, feed and water cucurbits to reduce the risk of powdery mildew.

■ Keep a watch for caterpillers.

■ Plant herbs in plastic containers so you take them with you to enjoy on your summer camping holiday.

Everything you need for the

FOOD The Christmas turkey stuffing Make 6 cups to feed 10

Ingredients 1 Tbsp Vegetable oil 4 stalks Celery, strings removed with a vege peeler and chopped 1 Onion, chopped 250g Sausage meat, use good quality sausages and remove their casings 125ml Port, or brandy 1 Granny Smith apple, peeled and cut into 1cm dice 60g Dried pitted cherries, or 8 pitted prunes 3 cups Breadcrumbs, made from stale bread, set aside one large crust of bread 1 tsp Dry mixed herbs ½ tsp Salt 125ml Chicken stock Directions Heat oil in a large frying pan over a low heat and add the celery and onion. Cook for 10 minutes until soft but not coloured.

Transfer to a bowl.

Turn up the heat and add the sausage meat to the frying pan. Cook for about 10 minutes, breaking it up with a wooden spoon until it is cooked through and lightly browned.

Pour in the port and allow to bubble up.

Remove from the heat.

Tip the celery and onion back into the frying pan with the apple, cherries, breadcrumbs, mixed herbs, salt and freshly ground pepper.

Pour in the stock to moisten and mix until well blended.

Stuff the cavity loosely with some of the stuffing. Use a crust of bread to close the opening.

Place a few rashers of bacon over the turkey breast and, using kitchen string, tie the wings and legs in so they are nestled comfortably into the turkey carcass.

• For the remainder of the stuffing, place into an ovenproof dish, pour over some of the pan juices and place in the oven during the last hour of roasting the turkey.

ordan Taylor likes “the sense of mastering the art of beauty”. Currently studying the Diploma in Beauty Therapy at The National School of Aesthetics, she feels she, “enjoys the practical application of ideas”, and the beauty programme is an outlet for these strengths. She’s passionate about makeup, waxing, manicure and electrology. Despite holding no formal secondary qualifications because school did not hold her interest, Jordan’s strong grades at NaSA reflect her passion.

After researching other beauty institutions, Jordan chose NaSA as she respected their professionalism, strong reputation and welcoming staff. She also feels her classmates make her study more enjoyable.

lamourous actress Joan Collins decided to follow her famous sister into writing fiction.

When she told Joni Evans, acquisitions editor at Random House, of her intentions, the major publisher anticipated a lucrative coup in novel publishing.

They quickly contracted Collins to write two novels and agreed to $4 million as her author’s fee, with $1.2m payable upon signing the contract.

Joan Collins duly turned in two manuscripts: The Ruling Passion and Hell Hath No Fury. Both novels described the bedroom antics of two celebrity sisters.

However, any links to Joan and Jackie Collins were strenuously denied.

Problems arose when Evans decided both manuscripts were “unpublishable trash”.

Random House sued Joan Collins for the recovery of their author’s advance payment.

Collins argued in court that she had fulfilled her contract and supplied “two complete novel manuscripts”, so she should keep the money. Her contract did not mention “quality of writing”.

The judge agreed with Collins about her first book. But he decreed her second book was a lightly veiled reworking of her first manuscript, and thus not a second novel.

Thus Collins was allowed to keep her $1.2m signing fee. Further, the court ordered Random House to pay Collins’ defence costs of $925,000.

“Writing fiction has changed dramatically

in the last decade,” said Brian Morris, principal at New Zealand Institute of Business Studies. “Many of today’s new authors self-publish their books and bypass the big name publishers altogether. We show our writer students how to do this.”

Not all workplaces are the same, take for example an office worker who does not have a high-risk work environment and whose concern might be to ensure that they can deal with minor cuts and superficial injuries or the ability to perform effective CPR, the injury risk for each place can be wide and variable. It is therefore essential that you pick the right first aid course to suit all of your activities – both professional and social.

Imagine the feeling of inadequacy when someone asks, “does anyone know first aid?”, only to find that you were not taught these skills on your course.

The wider 12-hour course teaches the additional unit standard 6400 and provides a wide knowledge base for medium to high risk environments. This course covers many of the skills required to deal with the most common injuries, such as falls, and dealing with complex scenes.

If you are not sure on the course best suited to your needs, ask your accredited first aid training provider. They can explain the course content and give you options. Look beyond the workplace and consider your family and your location. Check that you have a good quality first aid kit that is up-to-date, and that everyone knows where it is located.

Students gain confidence

oraki Polytechnic’s hairdressing programme gives its students the confidence and practical skills to gain a foothold within the industry. Second year student Jade Mason (28) heard about the polytechnic’s hairdressing course and decided to apply as it would give her the necessary skills to move into her industry of interest.

Jade completed the polytechnic’s Certificate in Hairdressing (Level 3) in 2013 and began her second year of training in 2014 through the polytechnic’s Certificate in Professional Hairdressing (Level 3).

During her second year of study, she began working at Tangles Hair Design on Saturdays and has earned herself a full-time job at the salon by 2015.

With her three-year-old son to look after at home, she believed a course suited her schedule better than an apprenticeship, which became part of her reason to enrol at Aoraki.

Tutor Julie Costello said the first year of the hairdressing programme give students an insight into the qualities and skills that a potential employer is looking for, and in the second year, Certificate in Professional Hairdressing (Level 3), students could grow this knowledge and their practical skills.

Co-Q10 reduces all causes of

mortality by 50%

R

esearchers were amazed with the results of how beneficial a natural nutrient Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is to the human body.

CoQ10 is a natural enzyme in the body’s cells that is essential for cell function, energy and survival. The heart, liver, kidneys and pancreas require large amounts of CoQ10 to function well.
