A MYSTERY Mercedes left abandoned in a car park for three years is to be towed away after racking up $28,000 in parking charges.

An absent-minded motorist seemingly forgot about the black Mercedes C Class, which has been sat inside a multi-storey car park in Birmingham, England since 2011.

Police searching for the owner say the car wasn’t stolen, reported missing or involved in any known crime.

The company which owns the car park, APCOA, said it has been unable to contact the owner of the unlocked vehicle.

APCOA has written to Birmingham City Council in a bid to have the car removed.

If West Midlands Police cannot track down the car owner, it will be towed away in the next seven days.

Ballantynes fire About 50 people gathered yesterday at the Bromley’s Ruru Lawn Cemetery for the unveiling of the rebuilt Ballantynes fire memorial, damaged in the February 2011 earthquake. Fortyone people died in the November 18, 1947 blaze. Many of their relatives were there yesterday. Gabrielle Stuart reports

• MAWSON STEWART and his brother Arthur Stewart were accountants, and were doing a financial audit at Ballantynes on the day of the fire.

They were both trapped and died in the building.

Their parents were left childless, and died soon afterward.

Mawson’s wife was left on her own to Mawson Stewart bring up their two children, aged two and six months.

His granddaughter, Claire Howard, said that her grandArthur Stewart mother had a tough time, bringing up children alone in the 40s.

“I was about 14 when my grandmother took me to the memorial for the first time. She told me that’s where Mawson is, but I didn’t really understand then.”

DEVASTATION: The burnt out Ballantynes store.

• JESSIE Smith was 18, and planned to finish her job at Ballantynes the week of the fire.

She started work at the department store after she finished school, and had been there just a few months.

She planned to start training as a nurse the next week, but was killed in the fire.

Her sister, Anne, was just a year older, and worked as a nurse at Christchurch Hospital.

She was working there when the first victims of the fire were brought in.

She left work and joined her family to hunt for Jessie, Anne’s daughter, Diane Keenan, said.

“In those days there wasn’t a lot of communication, so people were just walking around looking for relatives.”

Her aunt was remembered

every year as part of the family, she said.

“Mum always said Jessie was the pretty one, the vivacious, bubbly one who everyone loved.”

She still keeps a picture of her aunt, which used to hang in her nan’s, and then her mother’s house.

“Now it’s in my house, because I don’t want her to be forgotten.”

THE BALLANTYNES fire memorial was badly damaged in the February 2011 earthquake, with several of the pillars collapsing.

The memorial was made of stone from the Halswell Quarry, which has since been closed, and finding stone to replace it was a problem.

But Buzz March of March Construction came to the rescue, donating stone he had been storing for more than 30 years.

The stone came from the demolition of the Christchurch law courts in the 80s, and Mr March said he had been saving it to build himself a house.

But he went to school with the Ballantyne family, and said that when he heard what the stone was needed for he was happy to donate it.

A Christchurch stonemason donated his time to repair the memorial, and a $71,000 lotteries grant and donations from the families of the victims had helped to pay for the memorial rebuild and restoration.

A 142-TONNE, 61m tall monster has been brought in to help with the demolition of five properties on Clifton Tce. The monster in question is a crane with a lifting capacity of 12 tonne at 50m.

A Canterbury Earthquake Recover Authority spokeswoman said the crane had begun helping with land clearance on Monday.

Remote control excavators are also being used on the sites.

The crane was needed to “minimise the life risk associated with this clearance work, and to minimise the impact and disruption to the community.”

It was moved into location in multiple pieces by 12 heavy vehicles via the Summit Rd and assembled on-site.

An overnight road closure of Clifton Tce had been required on November 10. Workers have spent another week stabilising the site, as well as the crane which was sitting on an engineered support pad.

The spokeswoman said the crane would remain at its current location until early 2015.

Complaint heats up • From page 1 The commission did not respond yesterday to questions from The Star about whether Mr Sutton and the complainant would continue to work in close proximity or whether other arrangements would be made.

Ms Nixon also said the woman who made the complaint had done more for the Christchurch community than many people she knew.

“So a woman jeopardises her

career to make a complaint against someone more senior. Not easy. In fact it’s gotta be real bad to make that call. And frankly [the SSC] has shown it’s . . . useless,” she said.

The Star left a message for the woman who made the complaint yesterday but she did not respond.

CERA deputy chief executive communications Mike Shatford declined to comment.

‘Jet’ joins armoury against airport birds

CHRISTCHURCH AIRPORT has welcomed a new “employee” – and provided her with her own water bowl and a kennel to sleep in.

“Jet” is a 14-week-old purebred border collie puppy who will soon be gainfully employed scaring birds away from the airfield.

This is the first time a New Zealand airport has used a dog for this job, although they are used effectively in the United States, Europe and Australia.

Jet will be looked after and work alongside the airport’s senior airfield safety/wildlife officer, Norm Mannix, who ensures the airfield is clear of birds which pose a major risk to aircraft.

“Until now we’ve used sirens, lasers, stock whips, rockets, firearms and pyrotechnics to scare birds off the airfield. We even broadcast the distress calls of various species through loudspeakers to encourage them to leave. Jet provides us with another tool.”

Mr Mannix said it’s important to have as many tools as possible to scare away birds.

“Birds are quite clever and get used to scare tactics, so you’ve got to rotate them around. Dogs though are more effective as birds view them as a predator.”

Before she is unleashed into her new role, Jet will go through a rigorous training regime.

around the airfield getting accustomed to the noises associated with the airport, then will spend three months with a dog trainer in North Canterbury, learning whistle and voice commands until she can instantly be recalled.”

Already Jet is showing signs of intelligence.

“She watched me hook her leash over the tow ball on my ute the other day and promptly took it in her mouth and unhooked it,” laughed Mr Mannix.

Christchurch Airport’s Chief Fire Officer Peter Moore said the airport will eventually have two dogs at work on the airfield.

“They will each be assigned to a wildlife officer who rotate on a roster. The idea is we will always have a dog on duty at the times birds are most problematic onsite – dawn, midday and dusk,” he said.

Mr Moore said the airport is proud to be leading the way in using dogs for this job.

“I personally have seen these dogs

working at airports in Copenhagen and on the Gold Coast, so know they are another useful tool in the work airports do to keep passengers as safe as possible.”

Mr Mannix is confident Jet will do an excellent job once she’s had her training.

“We have caught her sleeping on the job a couple of times but, she’s a baby, so we do let her away with the odd kip. I can’t crack down on her too much – she’s the most popular member of staff!”

Brownlee fined for breaching airport security CHANGES: Bus routes have been changed and the number of buses reduced to save cost and reduce traffic.

By Gabrielle Stuart Christchurch is set to lose 20 per cent of its buses, in an effort to reduce congestion and save costs.

Changes have been made to most routes in the city under the latest Metro bus review, which will take effect in December.

The network will be changed to a three-tier system.

It will have five major Metro Lines, which will be colour coded and run every 10-15 minutes.

City Connector routes will run every 15-60 minutes into the city, and Suburban Link routes will run between suburbs.

The changes are expected to save about $1.6 million to $2 million each year, out of an annual budget of about $56 million.

Bus users pay for about 40 to 45 per cent of the cost of the bus service through fares. The rest is paid for through funding or rates.

There has been no changes to

fares in the review, but those are set to be looked at next year.

Environment Canterbury commissioner Rex Williams Rex Williams said road congestion was a major factor in the changes, particularly on routes that travelled Riccarton and Papanui Rds. He said that numbers of bus users had dropped immediately after the earthquakes, which meant the bus service had run at a loss for one year.

But he said that patronage had improved since then, and revenue was expected to continue to rise.

He said that some of the changes were made because of the changed city, but the review would have happened without the

earthquakes.

“Public transport plays a vital role in a modern people-friendly city. It helps to keep us, and our economy, moving. Christchurch David Stenhouse has seen so much change since the earthquakes, and our public transport network wasn’t fit to grow with us.”

He said the routes had not been decided by “some bureaucrat sitting in an office”.

About 2500 submissions were received on the proposals.

The Metrostar route will be discontinued, and The Comet will remain as a less frequent connecting route.

The changes will allow the use of smaller, 20-seat buses on minor routes.

AN INCIDENT at Christchurch Airport in July when Cabinet Minister Gerry Brownlee deliberately bypassed airport security in order to catch a flight has resulted in him being fined $2000.

Two parliamentary aides who were with Mr Brownlee at the time were given formal warnings.

The investigation was launched following the incident in which Mr Brownlee and two parliamentary aides entered a gate lounge through an exit only door.

Mr Brownlee was Transport Minister at the time.

Civil Aviation Authority director Graeme Harris said yesterday: “The subjects of this investigation are now fully aware of the importance of abiding by airport security rules, and the consequences of breaching these.

“The publicity surrounding the incident should also act as a warning to the travelling public that any airport security breaches are taken very seriously by the CAA.” Airport security was a “serious matter”, he said, and a thorough investigation had taken place in which Mr Brownlee, his staff and witnesses “all co-operated fully”.

He apologised and offered to resign, saying: “Running late for a plane this morning, I took a door that is normally used for an exit at Christchurch Airport onto the forecourt . . . and you're supposed to go through airport security.”

Yesterday, Mr Brownlee said he was disappointed with himself and had already paid the fine.

International rugby on the other hand is punctuated by too many stoppages and too many rules. So which code do you prefer to watch? Kyle Knowles reports

“It is a much faster and entertaining game to watch and the way the Kiwis are playing it is a much better game to watch at the moment.”

He says he follows all sports though.

He said there could be tweaking of the rules in rugby to speed it up at the moment which is what league has got going for it currently.

Marg Foster, former Silver Fern, said that is a tricky question but league has it over union at the moment.

“I really loved watching the league on Saturday and rugby has too many rules, too many stoppages and there are too many interpretations of the rules.

I love league, it’s so simple you have

five tackles and then you have to do something with it. I think league is very appealing because the Kiwis are playing a style where they let the ball go and take risks. They have just got that flair.”

She said rugby always has its place though.

“I do watch rugby but if you said to me the Kiwis are playing Papua New Guinea or France and the All Blacks are playing England I’d watch the rugby because it has more countries that play it and league is a very small international game.”

Stewart Shand, of Timaru: “I’ve always played rugby and I’d just rather watch rugby.

League is too much stand up, bang, fall over get up and do it again. It’s just the way the game is played, I’ve always felt this way. They (All Blacks) grizzle about the number of games they have to play but I’ll always watch it even when they chuck out a second string side like on Sunday morning.’’

Margaret Evans, of Hei Hei: “Rugby. We’re a rugby family, my husband used to be a great rugby player and we love rugby.

I love league but we prefer rugby. I’d still watch league providing it does not clash with rugby. League is a faster game and if there’s no rugby on, yes, we’ll watch league. The Kiwis were wonderful on Saturday and I think most people whether they’re league or union will watch one or the other providing they don’t clash. We’re Kiwis so we love all our sport.’’

Loretta Clark, of New Brighton: “Rugby, my grandson used to play and my great-grandchild’s playing and I like New Brighton rugby.

I still watch league though, it is getting more exciting now they are getting it together more. My eldest grandson used to play league and then went to rugby.

Sometimes you need a change of the two.

I just think league is coming back into the fore now it had a few years on the back foot.’’

More like ‘infamous’ ALTHOUGH I normally enjoy reading your paper, one of the entries in Friday October 31 “Today in History” on Page 10 made me very angry indeed.

Under the title of “Famous Birthdays” was the name Jimmy Savile who, you must surely know, is no longer famous but now absolutely notorious for his decades of predatory sexual abuse, which ruined the lives of more than 500 adolescents and children, some of them as young as two years old. He was a monster of depravity who got away with this for so long because of his status as such a well known entertainer.

I’m shocked to see his name mentioned in your paper in such a way and feel that a retraction/apology is in order.

Food is expensive now as well, I brought the basics the other day – toilet paper, dishwashing liquid, meat for two meals, some food for the animals, bread and it came to $73, Leaving me $41 to cover the $200 power account.

I would love to get a house that is lower maintenance but the rents are more then I get a week in total. I don’t agree that the landlords/property managers will bring the advertised price down as the competition is so fierce out there that it is nothing unusual for 50 people to turn up for one house. If a person has pets, forget it.

In my experience, the houses are let to the person that pays the highest amount.

Perfect gift or When shopping for someone difficult to buy for, a store gift card can seem like the perfect solution. But if you don’t do your homework, gift cards can just be a gift for the retailer.

BILLIONS OF dollars worth of gift cards are lost each year, as the cards expire, are lost or stolen, or the money gets swallowed in fees.

Financial consulting firm CEB TowerGroup estimated the value of unredeemed gift cards in 2012 at $2 million.

In the years from 2005 to 2011, it estimated a total of about $41 billion was lost.

A quarter of people surveyed in a November 2011 Consumer Reports poll said they had at least one unused gift card from the last holiday season.

Consumer Reports retail expert Tod Marks said gift cards were a double-edged sword.

“People love them, but often the cards end up collecting dust in a drawer. Our study also shows that two-thirds of people who get a card end up spending more than the card’s face value, so in effect they’re paying for their own present.”

But despite the risks, gift cards are only growing in popularity.

Gift cards are the most requested holiday present, according to an American National Retail Federation survey in October.

Of the people surveyed, 62 per cent put gift cards at the top of their Christmas wish list, above clothing, video games, jewellery and electronics.

A survey by the same group this month

found that the average person buying gift cards spends about $172.74, up from $163.16 last year.

It found that people over 65 spent the most on gift cards.

Men spent an average of $180.81 on gift cards, more than the average $165.09 spent by women.

Avonhead resident Jan Jensen said she often brought gift cards for friends and family members.

“Most of my family is in the North Island, so they’re easy to post.”

She said that it also meant they could choose what they wanted to spend it on, when she wasn’t sure of their interest.

She said she also enjoyed getting gift cards herself, although they could “get lost in the bottom of my purse”.

“They’re also good for regifting if I get something I wouldn’t use!” she said.

Riccarton resident Susan Barnes said she often gave gift cards to her husband for birthdays or anniversaries because he was difficult to buy for.

She said her 13-year-old daughter had recently started requesting them too.

And she said they never went to waste in her household.

“We’ll often leave them for when there’s sale on. Sometimes my husband stocks them up so he can buy something big.”

She said her favourite gift cards were from Westfield, because they could be used

A Westfield spokeswoman said that she could not say how many gift cards had been sold in the past year.

But she said they had become an increasingly popular gift choice, including with businesses, schools and community groups who brought gift cards as rewards, incentives or as a thank you.

She said they were especially popular at Westfield Riccarton because of the number of people shopping at the mall.

A report by Consumer NZ looked at 15 gift cards from major retailers and found that consumers were being disadvantaged by unfair terms and conditions on some cards.

All but two of the cards had an expiry date, and most expired after 12 months.

In the US, gift cards are required to have an expiry date of at least five years, while in many parts of Canada expiry dates can not be used at all.

“There’s no legitimate case for expiry dates on gift cards. Some retailers have already removed them. We think all should,” the report said.

But New Zealand Retailers Association general manager of public affairs Greg Harford said that could be risky for retailers.

“Historically gift vouchers didn’t have expiry dates, so there was quite a lot of financial risk associated with them for

THE CANTERBURY rebuild and Auckland’s quick growth are behind sales at Mitre 10 going through the $1 billion barrier for the first time in the company’s 40year history.

Martin Dippie, Mitre 10 chairman, said sales at the country’s biggest hardware, homeware, garden and trade chain rose 10.1 per cent in the year ended June 30, from $944 million to $1.043 billion, and he expected growth to continue.

“We’re extremely pleased to break through the $1 billion sales mark for the first time, and to do so with timing that coincided with our 40th anniversary,” Mr Dippie told The New Zealand Herald.

“Our financials show Mitre 10 is doing extremely well in a competitive retail and trade atmosphere.”

Chief executive Neil Cowie said the company was seeing fast expansion.

“We’re continuing the refresh of our Mitre 10 stores, having completed 15 stores this past year, and are also investing strongly into programmes to help our customers build their DIY knowledge.”

“The 40-year mark is an exceptional milestone – it’s been a fantastic journey of intergenerational growth.

“Our founding families of the business could never have envisaged that in 2014 we’d be celebrating 40 successful years as well as turning over $1 billion worth of business.”

Statistics NZ data for the September 2014 quarter showed retail sales volumes up 1.5 per cent, 12 of 15 industries with higher sales volumes and supermarket and grocery stores recording the largest rise, up 1.9 per cent.

Land compulsorily acquired for central city amenities

THE FINAL three properties needed for the new convention centre and central library have been compulsorily acquired by the Crown using special earthquake legislation.

Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (CERA) acting director Baden Ewart said for two of the properties, agreements had been reached with the owners but problems with the leases had prevented acquisition by agreement.

One of these was the Camelot Hotel in Cathedral Square, designated for the library. Issues associated with an unregistered lease had been the problem.

The owners, Square Holdings Ltd, could not be reached for comment yesterday.

The other property was Unit A, Chancery Lane.

“The owner and a party with an interest in the property are in dispute over whether or not a lease has terminated and this issue has prevented acquisition by agreement,” Mr Ewart said.

Investments, of which property developer Dave Henderson is listed as the sole director. That company is now in receivership with Grant Thornton.

A Grant Thornton spokeswoman confirmed yesterday that it had dealt with CERA over the acquisition process.

The third property acquired by the Crown was a 3 sq m laneway

between two buildings, needed for the convention centre. The owner, John Terras Bell, died in 1908 and CERA had been unable to locate any living successors.

Property owners will be able to seek compensation over the acquisitions through a claims determination process with the final decision to be made by Earthquake Recovery Minister

Hawkins chief executive o​fficer Geoff Hunt said the construction of the new airport terminal in Christchurch during the earthquakes had given his staff invaluable knowledge around working as invisibly as possible in these complex operational environments.

“We will use our project delivery experience and knowledge, earned through large-scale airport projects in Christchurch and Auckland, to work collaboratively with the designers and the airport to deliver a significant gateway asset for Wellington,” said Hunt after Wellington Airport announced the 6000sqm extension of its main terminal building and apron.

Hawkins has worked on numerous airport projects for more than 25 years within New Zealand and internationally.

Duvauchelle home wins award

THe cream of Canterbury’s housing crop was up against the best of the rest of the country on Saturday, in the Registered Master Builders House of the Year competition.

This 602 sq m, four-bedroom Duvauchelle home won the Outdoor Living and Heart of the Home Kitchen section.

Judges said the home’s dual, semi-enclosed outdoor living

spaces were generous and well-positioned to capture the magnificent views on offer.

Its american oak panelled kitchen finished in high gloss, which included a tropical fish tank, was said to be a standout.

It was one of 10 homes in the greater Christchurch area that made it to the national final of the competition.

However, in the clear waters ting off Uepi Island in the Solomon Islands I did get jealous as a small tes group of divers made their way into the enchanting depths. oore They had plunged in from one

expanse along the protected side of a jungle-covered island.

The resort’s longboat followed our progress along the submarine prairie as we finned above it, marvelling at the abundance of life within its myriad shapes and textures.

Our guide said the water was not as clear as usual following a storm but lying on the surface looking down it was clearer than anything you’d encounter off New Zealand coasts. And with the coral being so close to the surface photographers can get great shots.

In another part of the western province, Vonavona lagoon near the island of Gizo, we had the chance to snorkel over the reasonably intact remains of a World War 2 fighter plane, a Hellcat, submerged at a depth of 7m.

Its United States pilot was brought down during a dogfight, but managed to survive with a textbook splash landing.

The wreck is remarkably well preserved and will appeal to snorkellers and those with scuba gear.

he Christchurch Casino New Zealand Trotting Cup took place at Addington Raceway on Tuesday. The vivacious atmosphere drew trotting fans as well as fashion followers who indulged in the day of fun and glamour.

Under the blazing sun, elegant ladies and stylish gents vied in the best dressed contest, while on track muscular horses whipped the ground to clouds of dust and the excitement grew to fever pitch, driving frenzied punters to leap and shout as the winners crossed the post. Some tote tickets were cashed in, and others torn up to blow away in the breeze, accompanied by the sounds of celebration and disappointment.

EQC cheques are not final payments In recent days we’ve learned through media that nearly 4,000 Christchurch homeowners have not cashed cheques sent

by EQC. More than $20m is involved. Many people wrongly believe if they accept a payment from EQC this is acknowledgement of a full and final settlement.

Earthquake Services has heard from dozens of people over recent months who said they had not banked their EQC cheques because they did not think it was enough to fix all the damage. There have been over 30,000 payments by EQC for amounts of $15,000 or less. In many instances, these payments are based on poor assessments which have not identified all the actual damage to a property.

There’s no negotiation with you as the homeowner; EQC simply makes its own decision and sends you a cheque. I believe many people’s homes have suffered more damage than EQC has identified and so are entitled to a further cash payment from EQC; in some cases the actual damage may go beyond the EQC $100,000 cap and mean your insurer is also liable.

In light of these issues, if you have received a cash settlement from EQC for $15,000 or less and feel you may have been short-changed, Earthquake Services is offering an obligation-free and costfree, damage assessment.

This report will detail the actual earthquake damage to your home and will include things like your home’s floor levels, wall alignment and foundations. We will review what you have been paid by EQC and provide you with an indication of your actual entitlement. All at no cost or obligation to you.

Mystery surrounding Mastering the cancer DNA solved art of Australian scientists have solved the mystery of how huge, cancer-associated DNA molecules that occur in some cancers are formed.

They describe how these molecules—or neochromosomes—are made like Frankenstein’s monster, sewn together from other parts of the genome.

Neochromosomes, which are usually not found in normal cells, were first discovered in the 1950s, but how they are formed was unknown to researchers until now.

“We were looking at these really strange chromosomes that exist in about 3 per cent of cancers,” says Associate Professor Tony Papenfuss, of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research in Melbourne.

The study was published in the journal Cancer Cell.

Neochromosomes are common in sarcomas (soft tissue tumours) and liposarcomas (tumours of fat tissue). They are also found

in some brain and blood cancers.

“We isolated them, took the DNA out of these cells and then we sequenced them,” Papenfuss says.

“We sort of sifted through the details of these sequences and what we found was that these chromosomes are made up of bits of all the other chromosomes stuck together.”

The researchers then used mathematical modelling to figure out how these neochromosomes were formed.

Co-author Professor David Thomas, director of The

Kinghorn Cancer Centre at the Garvan Institute, says he was surprised by the extent of genetic rearrangement.

“These cancers manipulate the normal replication process in an ingenious way, creating a monster that can selectively steal and amplify the genes it needs to grow and survive,” he says.

The study also identified a possible new therapeutic target for treating liposarcomas.

“When the key oncogenes that were massively amplified in the cancer cells were blocked, the cancer cells died,” Thomas says.

tudents who attend Tai Poutini Polytechnic’s Certificate in Drilling at the Reefton campus and farm are able to embark on a new career path and earn excellent salaries within a short time of graduating.

Programme leader Michele Cox says students with varied career backgrounds have attended the 24-week drilling programme since its inception in 2010.

“Students come from all over New Zealand with a variety of work experiences to embark on a career in drilling. The experience and knowledge they gain over the programme gives them a great entry into the industry,” she says. “With our own rig based at the Reefton farm, the students have the opportunity to work as an offsider before going to a drilling company to

complete the work-based training part of the programme.”

The Certificate in Drilling was developed after companies in the drilling industry experienced a shortage of drillers’ assistants and approached the polytechnic for help.

It comprises 14 weeks training-based at the Tai Poutini Polytechnic Reefton campus and farm, followed by 10 weeks work-based training on a drilling rig in New Zealand.

The course provides students with basic skills for the industry, including working safely and effectively in a drilling team, maintenance and use of a range of drilling equipment and tools, mobilisation of drilling equipment and materials, environment, health and safety around a non-hydrocarbon drilling site, hazard identification and risk control, first aid, pre-hospital emergency care, introduction to welding and gas cutting, C2 licence, wheels, tracks and rollers, 4WD, lifting and moving loads, height safety and manual handling.

li Phillips has always known what her dream job would be. Through Aoraki Polytechnic, she has been able to take the first steps along the path to making this a reality.

Studying at Aoraki’s Christchurch campus, Ali is currently completing her second year of hairdressing, a Certificate in Professional Hairdressing, level three.

“I have always wanted to be a hairdresser since I was little - it has been my passion for many years,” says Ali. “I had grown up doing hair, cutting my Barbie doll’s hair, and generally fascinated with hairdressing.”

With no experience in the industry, and having to balance study with the needs of her family as well, 26-year-old Ali found the perfect fit at Aoraki.

“I’d been looking for a hairdressing course for some time and Aoraki seemed to suit my needs,” says Ali. The level three, full-time course runs over 34 weeks. It is designed to provide students with all the skills needed to work in a commercial salon environment, including working with clients to advance their cutting, consultation, colouring and styling techniques.

“This year and last year have both been very challenging and equally rewarding,” says Ali. “I have enjoyed every minute of it and love working with the people that have come through the course so far.”

For Ali, the most rewarding part of her study has been an increase in her confidence level and learning how to interact with the

Injuries not deterring fighters Ten Cantabrians will take part in corporate boxing fights as part of the Fight for Christchurch this Saturday, raising funds for the Ronald McDonald House and Cure Kids charities. Reporter Andrew Voerman went behind the scenes to take a look at what their preparation is like.

This week: Vodafone regional sales manager Paul Frewen and Spark solutions consultant Jono Huntley WOOLSTON BOXING Club smells just like it should.

An unpleasant smell of sweat fills the room, leaving the air muggy and thick.

It’s a scent that suggests a lot of hard work has been done here and that there is plenty more still to come.

For Spark solutions consultant Jono Huntley, however, that work will have to wait.

He’s 12 days out from making his boxing debut at the Fight for Christchurch and he’s unable to carry out a proper training session.

Something’s gone wrong in his back and his physio has told him he has to take it easy if he’s going to make it to the ring on November 22.

He sits, strapping his hands with blue tape, then the call comes to begin warming up.

Then it’s on to shadow boxing.

This he can do.

With his head down and his arms up, Huntley runs through his combinations, sucking in deep breaths with every punch.

Everyone else heads for the ring where they will take turns sparring against each other, while Huntley heads for a punching bag in the corner of the room.

Keeping in sync with those sparring, who are going at it for two minutes at a time, he takes out his frustrations on the sack of canvas.

He says having to take it easy is hard.

“You get a little niggle or something like that and you can’t go hard out because obviously you don’t want to aggravate it more.

“I find that sparring gives you a lot more insight into what you’re doing and not

squarely on the task ahead.

He says it’s been hard going, but completely and utterly worth it.

“I’ve been absolutely blown away by how tough it is to actually train – the mental toughness you need, the science of boxing – it’s amazing.

“It’s helped me a lot of other ways too – being able to think on my feet, clarity of purpose – all those sorts of things.”

He’s full of praise for his trainer as well and plans to keep on working with him, even once Saturday night has come and gone.

Frewen says it was an eye-opening experience.

“I think just seeing what other families have to deal with at Ronald McDonald House, it makes you realise how lucky you are, and the dramas and the things that I’m considering at the moment are really insignificant compared to some of the challenges that those families have had to deal with.”

For Huntley, who overcame bowel cancer in 2012, it’s a feeling that hits close to home.

“I knew how scary it was for me going through that sort of thing. I can’t imagine what it would be like as a teenager, or even the families of kids who are having to go through some pretty traumatic stuff. They take a lot of the worry away.”

While his back hobbled him for a spell, he’s come through alright, and THE FACTS is counting Paul Frewen down the days • Age 43 until the fight.

After some light work with his trainer and on the speed ball, he calls it a day.

But he’s full of defiance.

“I don’t care if I’m walking up in a Zimmer frame – I’m getting in that ring.”

When he does, it will be the 43-year-old figure of Paul Frewen he finds standing across the mat.

Frewen works for Vodafone, making this a battle of the telcos.

Up in a clean, sunny room above the Christchurch Polytechnic, he has the luxury of a one-on-one session with his trainer, Paul Fitzsimons.

He’s relentless; even when he’s given a break, he can’t stop moving around the room, running on adrenalin.

But he’s also making the most of it. Whether he’s up against Fitzsy or a bag, he has his head down, and his focus

No 10 head scratcher FIRST FIVE-EIGHTH has been a problem child for the All Blacks over the last decade or so.

When Dan Carter was fit, the worry was that there was nobody good enough to fill his boots should he become injured, a sentiment which peaked around the World Cup in 2011 when the All Blacks won in spite of his three replacements, rather than because of them.

Now, the issue is that we have four good options, but none that are clearly a cut above.

Carter, Aaron Cruden, Beauden Barrett and Colin Slade have all played pivot this year and they are all available for selection for the first time ahead of Sunday’s season-ending test against Wales in Cardiff.

New Zealand Herald rugby writers Pat McKendry and Gregor Paul have cast their eyes over the four ahead of the team naming, which will take place tomorrow.

McKendry has gone for Cruden as his starter because he looked good during his last appearance, against England two weekends ago, “Goal-kicking aside, Cruden was pretty tidy at Twickenham.

Bamford, a Canterbury Bulls and New Zealand Residents rugby league player, has been forced to miss what would have been his second professional fight for health reasons.

It means his opponent, American Clarence Tillman, whose last high-profile clash was against All Black Sonny Bill Williams, will no longer be fighting either.

Scaife, a former New Zealand light welterweight amateur champion, broke his hand during sparring, forcing him to postpone his professional debut.

His opponent Ricky Campbell will now face Brisbane-based Cantabrian Matt Te Paa. Event director Justin Wallace said Scaife is gutted to be missing the event.

“He really had a fire in his belly but he’s going to carry on training and we’ll get him a fight in the new year.”
