Family’s double grief By Max Towle A 19-YEAR-OLD’S death in a horror car crash is the second such tragedy to hit her family. Mereana Tirri Dobson was killed when the Hyundai station wagon she was travelling in crashed on Memorial Ave on Friday night. Two of the car’s five passengers remained in a critical condition yesterday. The driver of the Mitsubishi ute that was also involved in the crash suffered minor injuries. Police are still investigating the cause of the crash. It was the second fatal crash in Ms Dobson’s family in recent

years. Her brother, Tama Regan Dobson (also known as Tama Wikiriwhi-Dobson), was one of three people killed following a police pursuit in central Christchurch in July 2010. A coroner subsequently found Mr Dobson, 27, was to blame for the crash. On Monday, Ms Dobson’s father spoke of his shock and grief at learning of his daughter’s death. “It is tragic for parents to be waiting for their kids to come home and when you find out why they’re not coming home it’s really hard,” he said. Mr Dobson asked for privacy

on behalf of his family while they grieve. Mereana Dobson’s funeral service will be held today. A friend from Avonside Girls’ High School, Ashleigh Shatford, yesterday told The Star Ms Dobson was a generous, loving person. “She was very caring and always wanted to help out all the time. She would always clean up after she came round for dinner,” she said. “She was a great laugh ... I remember our highlighter fights during science class.” Ms Shatford said it was tragic Mereana and her brother had

both died in car crashes at a young age. She has set up a Facebook page for her friend called “RIP Mereana” where tributes have flowed in. “I only met you a few times, but you were an amazing kind hearted girl, with so much potential. moe mai ra ataahua, hoki atu ra ki to tupuna,” said one commentor. “Kind hearted, always true to yourself and those you held dear, loyal. That’s how I remember you. Judging from the other posts, that was something that never changed about you, I’m glad to see,” said another.
