Sports hub plan gains momentum BY GRACE CABELL Plans to have a sports hub in Upper Riccarton are accelerating. FC Twenty 11 Football Club boss Eddie Cropley is behind the move to pool sports club resources in the area. The three sports clubs involved are the Riccarton Domain Tennis Club, Riccarton Cricket Club and the FC Twenty 11 Football Club. The facility would be based at the

Upper Riccarton Domain. The group recently received support from the Riccarton-Wigram Community Board to go ahead with plans for the sports hub. Mr Cropley said the group was working on a final plan to present to the board. Board member Peter Laloli said the idea was in its early stages but the board was in support of the idea. The Riccarton Cricket Club is currently situated at the Hagley

Oval, where it has been for nearly 100 years. Cricket club treasurer Tim Murdoch said there was no future for the club at the Hagley Oval. “We will definitely be moving. We still have a clubrooms there but the last couple of years we’ve planned a lot of cricket at the Upper Riccarton Domain,” said Mr Murdoch. One of the options for the new hub is having two cricket nets

instead of one. The proposed hub would also include a clubroom for the three clubs to use. “We’ve had a good reception from the other two clubs and there is definitely a common thread of thought in the desire to move forward,” said Mr Murdoch. He said there was a lot of work still to be done but was hopeful they would be able to move forward. • Nga Puna Wai, page 3
