THE TEENAGER jailed yesterday for two rapes – one of an 11-year-old girl – watched violent child porn from a young age.

William James Stewart, 19 (right), was jailed for 15 years for raping a 17-year-old girl in his car near Christchurch Airport, then abducting an 11-year-old girl from a North Canterbury playground and raping her at knifepoint over two days last October.

He could be released on parole after eight years.

The High Court heard Stewart, who lived in Loburn, watched violent and sexual child pornography, and had fantasies of raping a young girl.

When aroused, the court heard he lost all empathy and felt like he had no control over his actions.

His 11-year-old victim only escaped further attack by jumping from his moving car.

Justice Cameron Mander said Stewart’s actions last October were a “family’s worst nightmare.”

He lifted name suppression on Stewart, but protected his victims and their families.

A STUNNED English woman was attacked by a 1.2m python which could have been hiding in her home for six weeks.

The recently-discovered reptilian roommate lunged at Naomi Bushall as she opened her airing cupboard to put away an armful of washing.

Ms Bushall, 34, initially mistook the uninvited serpent for a coat hanger – before spotting its two black eyes peering back at her.

A specialist fire brigade unit called to the scene took a full half hour to track down and capture the reptile.

Officers now believe that the burmese python – a non-poisonous constrictor – had been slithering inside of Ms Bushall’s home for up for six weeks after escaping from its owners several months earlier.

Naomi, mother to three-yearold Cody, said: “I can laugh about it now but it was terrifying at the time. I dread to think what would have happened if Cody had found it.’’

Parents’ nightmare William James Stewart was sentenced to 15 years jail yesterday for two shocking rapes – one on a young woman, the other an 11-year-old girl. Max Towle reports A DESPERATE father tried to flag down a car carrying his 11-year-old daughter and the teenager who had just raped her.

The young girl had been abducted from a North Canterbury playground and driven to a remote rural location on a Sunday morning last October.

Her hands were bound by her kidnapper – Loburn 18-year-old William James Stewart – who raped and strangled her at knife point in the front seat of his car.

Up until then, her parents had been frantically trying to find her.

By chance, her father saw Stewart’s car approaching and stood in the middle of the road in an attempt to make him stop, but he swerved around him.

Minutes later, the girl, fearing for her life, jumped out of the moving car.

She was found at the side of the road by a member of the public with scratches and grazes on her body, and a cut on her thumb caused by Stewart’s knife.

Trying to evade police at over 150km/h, Stewart crashed into a power pole on Birch Hill Rd in Loburn.

He was found with a noose around his neck and told police he had crashed deliberately to try and kill himself.

Stewart’s crime spree had started the previous night on October 12, when he raped a 17-year-old girl in his car near Christchurch Airport.

When he found out the girl had laid a complaint with police, Stewart had suicidal thoughts.

Rather than act on them, Justice Cameron Mander said Stewart instead fulfilled his “deviant fantasy” of raping a young girl.

Stewart, now 19, was jailed for 15 years in the High Court, yesterday.

There were cries of “yes” from the public gallery yesterday when his name suppression was lifted.

Stewart fulfilled his “deviant fantasy” of raping a young girl.

However, the Crown’s appeal for preventative detention was rejected, which means Stewart will be eligible for parole after eight years.

He had admitted charges of rape, threatening to kill, abduction, and unlawful sexual connection.

was led out of the court. He did not react to the two heartfelt victim impact statements that were heard, the contents of which were suppressed.

Justice Mander said Stewart’s 11-year-old victim had shown remarkable courage and resilience since the attack.

“But the effects run deep and are likely to be long-lasting and damaging,” he said.

Crown prosecutor Sara Jamieson said the court was lucky it was not hearing a case for murder.

She said Stewart had homicidal thoughts when he abducted the 11-year-old girl.

“It is because she jumped out of the car we are not here talking about a more serious offence where life imprisonment would be imposed,” she said.

Ms Jamieson pushed for name suppression to be lifted.

“It is important people know who he is and what he has done,” she said.

involved, and who is responsible.”

Defence counsel Elizabeth Bulger unsuccessfully asked for name suppression to continue, reasoning there would be a community backlash against Stewart’s family.

One Loburn resident, who did not want to be named, yesterday told The Star everyone in the close-knit community Elizabeth had followed Bulger the trial closely.

“My husband texted me just now to tell me the sentence,” she said.

“We don’t directly know the victims’ families, but we do know people who were involved in the ordeal. It’s impossible not to in a place like this.”

She said she thought the attack was a one-off, and did not represent “the wonderful community” in Loburn.

Remembering 9/11

A bagpiper lamented the victims of the September 11 attacks in New York at a memorial yesterday. The ceremony, organised by The American Club of Christchurch and the Fire Service, took place on the corner of Madras and Kilmore streets. American Club president John Peterson said the ceremony remembered all those who died in the 2001 tragedy, in particular firefighters. “We remember those who so tragically lost their lives on 9/11, and especially salute the New York firefighters who lost 343 of their team that day.”

A driver tried to flee after losing control of his vehicle and hitting several parked cars outside the 24 Hour Surgery on Colombo St yesterday. Police said after losing control of his car, the driver “walked off ” towards Bealey Ave. Police caught him a short distance away. The crash happened about 2pm.

Two of Stewart’s psychological reports said there was a medium to high risk of him re-offending.

He showed remorse for his attack on the 11-year-old girl, but had little for his 17-year-old victim.

The court heard he had inherited borderline personality disorder which affected his rehabilitation.

He showed impulsive, reckless, callous, and sadistic traits, with a disregard for others. He enjoyed feelings of sexual control and power.

The dark side of William Stewart WILLIAM JAMES Stewart was a teenager with a dark side – he watched violent child pornography.

The court heard extracts from three psychological reports yesterday. They painted a picture of a troubled young man.

Stewart watched extreme pornography from an early age and had deviant fantasies of raping a young girl.

When he was aroused, he would lose his empathy for others.

He used recreational drugs, including cannabis, and had once tried to commit suicide because of depression.

His violent side was linked to getting too deeply involved in intense relationships. When they ended he would feel abandoned and resentful.

Stewart grew up in North Canterbury and was a pupil at Loburn School.

Principal Stuart Priddy told The Star he remembered him as a young boy.

“He was like any other normal boy at primary school,” he said.

Mr Priddy said there was no sign of what was to come.

The court heard Stewart grew up in a remarkably unremarkable home with a supportive family.

His family still support him, but they may now suffer a community backlash from name suppression being lifted, his defence counsel Elizabeth Bulger said.

Justice Cameron Mander said Stewart’s family’s support would be important if he was to rehabilitate himself in prison.

Stewart was later a boarder at St Bede’s College.

“He accepts his behaviour was abominable,” she said.

“He knows he’s got to do something about himself.”

Justice Mander declined an open ended preventative sentence because Stewart was a young firsttime offender.

Yachties have forced a rethink on the design of a multi-million dollar replacement sea wall at Redcliffs, which failed during the February 2011 earthquake.

City Care profit

City council-owned company City Care has more than quadrupled its profit to almost $13 million. The company yesterday reported a $12.9m net profit for the year to June, earned from revenue of $350.8m. Profit was 360 per cent higher than last year’s $2.8m, which was hit by cost blowouts. City Care is the biggest council-owned company of its type in New Zealand.

Accord to address shortage of social housing

THE CITY council’s decision to lease its social housing to a separate entity will secure the service for tenants and grow it into the future, deputy mayor Vicki Buck says.

The restructure is part of the Christchurch Housing Accord with the Government, which the city council ratified at its meeting today.

Both the new entity and the accord are aimed at better addressing the shortage of social housing in Christchurch and implementing the Government’s social housing reform programme.

“Housing is one of this council’s top priorities, and we’re committed to making sure community members have access to quality, affordable housing now and in the longterm,” Cr Buck said.

“It’s important to highlight that the council’s social housing has never been subsidised by rates, and there is no intention to start now.”

Under the Housing Accord, the Government will work with the non-profit entity to attain the status of a registered community housing provider, to qualify for the Government’s Income-Related Rent Subsidy.

The Government has also agreed to invest $75 million through a new Christchurch Housing Accord Fund, and the city council will contribute up to $50 million worth of land and other assets from its social housing portfolio.

Courage in the blood

RICHIE MCCAW has been in many a battle on the football field – now the wartime experiences of some of his family members will be featured in a new World War 1 exhibition.

The four-year-long exhibition documenting the story of World War 1 and how it impacted Canterbury will open at the Air Force Museum in Wigram tomorrow.

Timed to coincide with the centenary of the conflict which began in July 1914, it will include various military and civilian items, historic video footage, as well as stories and other information.

Exhibitions officer Tim Neal said family accounts from prominent Cantabrians including the McCaw family, The Wizard of Christchurch and Hayley Westenra would also be part of the exhibition.

“Part of what we are trying to do here is encourage people to look into their family history as everyone has a World War 1 story in their family, they just don’t know it,” Mr Neal said.

McCaw’s great-grandfather Alexander McCaw was wounded in the Battle of Messines, where around 700 New Zealanders died, in Belgium, in 1917, and was discharged from the army as a result. His great uncle Thomas Field fought in the same battle and died of his wounds.

Hayley Westenra’s great-great uncle Frederick Westenra was killed in Battle of Passchendaele, also in Belgium. His battalion helped evacuate the wounded.

Like many who died on the muddy battlefield, he has no known grave but his name is on the Tyne Cot Memorial in Belgium.

The battles at Messines and Passchendaele were fought for control of the ridges south and east of the town of Ypres.

The Wizard’s mother Gladys Brackenbury, who grew up in the English town of Framingham, was 10 when she saw a German Zeppelin pass overheard, presumably on its way to bomb London.

Museum staff were this week putting the finishing touches on most of the displays, however,

the stories of prominent Cantabrians were not expected to be in place until near the end of next week.

Mr Neal said the exhibition would be continually updated throughout the four years as the anniversaries of various World War 1 events came along.

“For instance, coming up to the Gallipoli anniversary we hope to have stories that relate to that and then as we go through the war commemorative period we will change these so they are basically current on the commemorative cycle,” he said.

Displayed items and information had been sourced from all over Canterbury, from places including the Canterbury Museum, the Royal New Zealand Army Medical Corps and Canterbury Regiment History Centre at Burn-

ham Military Camp, Canterbury University, Christchurch City Libraries, Ngai Tahu, the South Canterbury Museum and the Waimate Historical Society.

Air Force Museum business manager Dave Clearwater said staff had been working collaboratively with these organisations for more than a year to bring the exhibition together.

Mr Neal said it was quite unusual for so many museums and other organisations to work so collaboratively on producing an exhibition.

The museum will also hold an event on October 12, where people can take items relating to World War 1 for an expert to offer more information on how they can further research its background.

Items could be military or civilian.

‘I thought it was a quake’

By Emma-Jane McLennan A WOMAN whose house was crashed into by a gas bottlecarrying truck late on Wednesday afternoon suspects the driver lost control while travelling downhill.

An Elgas truck driver missed a metal road barrier and crashed through the back of her Mt Pleasant section at around 4.45pm.

The truck rolled over the retaining wall and landed sideways, wedged between the raised garden and the side of the garage.

“My son got a bit of shock to see the the truck there and the gas bottles on the ground. He saw the driver getting out and he seemed fine but they took him to hospital,” Annette Fraser said.

Her son, Josh Fraser, 17 (above), was at home watching TV when he heard the truck smash into the back of the Basil Pl house.

“I thought it was an earthquake when it happened, and I checked out the back and there was a truck all mangled upside down behind the house in the backyard,” he said.

Josh said he could smell gas leaking from damaged LPG cylinders.

He alerted the next-door neighbours, who phoned police.

“They told us to evacuate because there could possibly be an explosion.”

Hagley Oval lease plea fails

Mrs Fraser was dropping her two daughters at an after-school programme when the crash happened. Her husband was at work.

When she received a call from Josh she turned around and came straight back home.

“He called and told me he was already walking around all the neighbours’ houses, to tell them what had happened. He was very calm,” she said.

“When I got there they’d cordoned off Basil Pl and Glenstrae Rd. We waited out in the cold to see what was happening and we were allowed back in around 8.30pm,” she said.

When Mrs Fraser saw where the truck had landed, she suspected it sped straight down the hill behind their property before landing in her backyard.

“Something must have happened – either he went straight down the hill too fast or his brakes didn’t work. There is a very sharp hairpin bend and he must have missed that. It [the truck]

Mrs Fraser said the drop from the top of her hill to her backyard was around 9m to 10m.

The truck was removed from the property using a crane yesterday morning.

The driver suffered minor injury and is believed to have been discharged from hospital yesterday, a police spokesman said.

“The truck was laden with both full and empty gas bottles. It is obviously a bit of concern and police are investigating.”

Elgas declined to comment.

THE LEASE for Hagley Oval will be transferred between cricket bodies without change, in spite of an opponent’s call for costs to be renegotiated.

The city council yesterday agreed to transfer the lease from the Canterbury Cricket Association to the Canterbury Cricket Trust in order to secure millions of dollars’ worth of funding.

The trust was set up in 2007 to raise funds for CCA and its redevelopment of the oval’s pavilion.

However, several of the charities that have donated the money have insisted that the trust owns the pavilion, rather than just transferring the money to CCA, to make sure the building can be used by the wider community.

Hands off Hagley spokesman Martin Meehan suggested that the transfer of the lease be used to change the terms of the lease.

Mr Meehan suggested the annual $1200 lease was too low for a commercial operation, that CCA revenue from use of the oval could be recouped by the city council.

City council spokesman John Filsell said the city council benefited from the current arrangement through not having to contribute to design, ownership or maintenance of the pavilion, and could still hire the oval out for other purposes.

A TRUCK trailer flipped yesterday morning at a roundabout on a busy stretch of road which police have recently expressed concern over.

The truck crashed at the Halswell Junction Rd and Southern Motorway roundabout around 9am, overturning its trailer and sending one of two large steel containers tumbling into a lamp post.

A number of trucks have crashed on the roundabout since it was opened in 2012.

The roundabout is close to another at the Halswell Junction Rd and Springs Rd intersection, the design of which caused Senior Sergeant Pete Stills to express his concerns last month.

Crashes at that roundabout have tripled since it was redeveloped, also in 2012, with nine crashes in that time including one which resulted in a serious injury.

The driver of the truck in yesterday’s crash was uninjured but the lamp post was leaning on an almost 45-degree angle after the impact and traffic was reduced to one lane for a time.

$100m project roaring ahead

A MAN in a gold suit points to a giant steel beam and smiles.

Early this year, work on Antony Gough’s ambitious The Terrace project stalled due to rising costs and demands for bigger spaces from tenants.

But in July, The Star revealed the flamboyant developer had reached a deal with John Jones

Steel over structural costs, meaning construction work could continue.

On Wednesday, Mr Gough said that deal was worth around $1.5 million.

“As you can see, the steel work is well under way. New columns have gone up from the structure . . . that steel beam over there has just been delivered,” he said.

The diggers will return in a

month’s time, he estimated, to “go full steam ahead on Stage 1.”

“I had to borrow a little bit of money out of Australia to get things started again, but we’re looking good at this stage,” he said.

The price tag for the hospitality, retail and office development remains $100 million.

“I always told people to have faith,” Mr Gough said.

A PROMISING Christchurch rugby league player who denied spear tackling a man in Queenstown earlier this year has been fined.

Taylor William Enright, 19, who is bound for the Brisbane Broncos this week, was initially charged with injuring Jonathan Marshall with intent and assaulting Mr Marshall on January 2 in Queenstown, both of which he denied.

This week the lead charge was amended to injuring Mr Marshall under circumstances that if death had been caused he would have been guilty of manslaughter, which Enright admitted.

The assault charge was withdrawn by police.

He was fined $1000, and he was ordered to pay $500 reparation to Mr Marshall and $1000 for witness costs.

Prosecuting Sergeant Ian Collin said Enright and a group of associates were on a street corner at 12.55am and as Mr Marshall walked past, Enright “picked him up off his feet in what was described as a spear tackle on to concrete’’.

Mr Marshall was treated in hospital for suspected head injuries, but made a full recovery.

Enright told Judge Tom Broadmore he was offered a training spot with the Brisbane Broncos U20 rugby league team and was to have moved to Australia at the start of the year.

Judge Broadmore said the circumstances amounted to carelessness at the lower level.

5 minutes with John Campbell Taking Christchurch under Last week, hundreds of weary Cantabrians packed the Shirley Boys’ High School hall to air their frustration with insurance companies and EQC on TV3 current affairs show Campbell Live. The man in the spotlight, John Campbell, talked to Max Towle about 11-hour days, doorknocking, and championing Christchurch.

Hi John, can I start by asking how you got your start in the business?

I grew up in Wellington. All my schooling was there at Wellington College, and Victoria University where I studied English literature.

From there, quite suddenly, I got a cadetship at Radio New Zealand.

It was the type of job where you do the council meetings and the police calls and it’s a fantastic way to learn. That was a two-year gig starting in 1989.

I think TV3 saw me as young, cheap, and keen and hired me in 1991. I love radio but there was something tremendously exciting about TV when I started. TV3 was exotic, new, the underdog, and under-performing and it appealed enormously to me. I was a reporter for seven years doing general news, then in Parliament’s public gallery, then current affairs.

I still remember vividly when they called me up on a Saturday afternoon and asked if I wanted to be a newsreader. After that Campbell Live, which is approaching 10 years.

Why does Campbell Live seem to champion Christchurch’s cause more than any other current affairs show?

It was never premeditated, it just never seemed appropriate to leave.

Most spot news has a natural conclusion. In a car crash, the wreckage is gone, people are taken away and the story comes to an end. We all thought the earthquake story would end, but it still hasn’t. There are still people who don’t know where they stand. The CBD is bare . . . life is still rough-as-guts for many.

Do you think people in Auck-

land and Wellington still care about earthquake issues?

I think people in the rest of the country do care and do wish Christchurch well. They want the city to be okay. I’m a Wellingtonian who lives in Auckland and in all the time since the earthquakes I can count the fingers on one hand how many people have asked me to stop talking about Christchurch. But we do have to report the issues in different ways. Shirley Boys’ High, for instance, was a new way of showing that people’s lives aren’t sorted yet. I would be cross if people did ask us to move on.

Fundamentally, if we can’t get Christchurch right, what does this mean for Wellington, where we all originally expected to have an earthquake. We have to get it right as a template for everything we do.

Half a million New Zealanders live there and deserve to have a quality of life that matches the rest of the country.

How often do you travel to the city?

I was down there twice last week, but probably won’t be down this week. Since the earthquakes, on average, I would say I’m there at least once a week. In the weeks after the February quakes I just lived there.

How long is your average day?

Oh, a basic day for me is about 11 hours, and that doesn’t include flying or preparation time.

Does that have a negative impact on your family life?

No, because this is my job and it’s what I do. When I get really immersed in a community and see how tired and shattered people are, I feel like I carry that myself,

Do you have children?

I do – two children. We have a girl aged 13 and a boy aged 11. I’ve been with my partner since 1991.

Can it be difficult sometimes, having such a high profile?

It is hard to walk around in the street. I don’t ever go out without getting confronted, it’s inevitable.

It is both ridiculous and lovely.

But people are nice. When I’m on my own it’s okay, you have delightful engagements with people, but when I’m with my kids it’s not as

welcome. Me and my son have a mutual love of rugby, but if I take him to a game or a test match, when I’m taking the 500th selfie with someone, I ask myself if I’m spending enough time with him.

Has he been standing off to the side the whole night?

What’s the most rewarding interview you’ve done?

You do different interviews for different reasons. There have been ones where I’ve felt absolutely transported by somebody. Harry Belafonte, for example, talking about the civil rights movement was incredible. He was there with Martin Luther King all those years ago, and he took me there when we talked and I felt the hairs standing up on the back of my neck.

Step into the breeze

his wing FOR THE PEOPLE: John Campbell last week spoke to dozens of disgruntled quake insurance claimants at Shirley Boys’ High School.

But I’ve also done red zone interviews which have been rewarding and satisfying in their own way. Often, when we talk to people in Christchurch, we just give the microphone to them and ask them what they want to say.

Which politician is the toughest nut to crack?

Both Helen Clark and John Key are formidable to interview.

They’re both different, but formidable in their own ways. Clark was resolute and steely and almost impenetrable. Talking to her felt like you were raiding a fortress. Key is brilliant because he understands how to appeal to an audience at a level where he recruits them to his side. An interview becomes less about substance, more about his ability to take people with him.

With recent stories on the Dead Sea kiosks and legal highs, it has felt like you created the story then pushed it every night.

How do you decide which stories are worthy of deeper investigation and campaigning for?

It is a fine line. With legal highs, we had no idea the story was going to take off the way it did. We genuinely believe our story was in some way responsible for the eventual law change. The night we spoke to Peter Dunne outside a legal high shop was important. I have a bril-

liant boss in producer Pip Keane and her instincts are great. When a reporter pitches a story at the morning meeting, they have to get their idea past everyone. There is also a lot of feedback. After some stories we get a lot of emails, and then none from others. We often rely on what the audience is telling us.

Campbell Live reporters do plenty of doorknocking. When is that the best approach to talk to someone?

We do it because people just refuse to appear. It’s fine if you’re someone who hasn’t a high public profile or are painfully shy or a victim of something terrible, but when it’s someone who has used their public profile and that platform for their own good, we think “bugger that.” Our targets are never soft. We are not a cynical programme and don’t kick people when they’re down.

Do you keep a close eye on the show’s ratings?

Our ratings come out at 9.30am every morning so we know how we’ve gone, but you won’t know what’s behind them. There may have been a killer storyline on Shortland St for instance that we know nothing about.

Do you catch up on Seven Sharp every night?

I watch Seven Sharp sometimes,

but by the time I get home I’m just done. At the end of the day I’ve literally had enough. I try and have some kind of personal life.

What hobbies do you have outside of work?

I love music passionately. I love the indie music scene. I love young people singing about unrequited love. The whole Flying Nun Records era was a joy and my sense of connection with that is quite profound. I like fast, short guitar songs. I think Christchurch artist Aldous Harding is fantastic. Tiny Ruins is a genius. I love Sharon Van Etten . . . Interpol. I’m not interested in middle age. I’m living it, that’s enough.

Are you going to vote?

I’m a bit confused about that, actually. I passionately believe everyone should vote. I think it should be compulsory, but I haven’t worked out who I’m going to vote for yet.

Do you look for inspiration from the debates you host?

I’m inspired by decency when I’m dealing with someone and a sense that they’re connected with the world. But the election isn’t a Miss Congeniality contest. A candidate has got to have substance.

Who do you think will win?

It’s for the Nats to lose now. Two weeks out, they’re so far in front.

Put in a swimming pool for summer Making best use of the flow from the indoor to the outdoor area can add a sense of space and ambience to your home. So what do you need to consider for decks, balconies and swimming pools?

Decks Indoor/outdoor living and long summer evenings on the deck and around the barbecue are a favourite part of family life for many New Zealanders.

Plan for good indoor outdoor flow in your design and consider your decking needs.

The position of the house in relation to sun and boundaries will dictate the size and shape of the deck to a certain extent.

Be aware there may be local council restrictions on how much ground a deck can cover. Other matters to consider are shading and shelter from the prevailing wind.

To make the deck more interesting, consider in-built seating, steps, planters and unusual floor shapes. If you are building a deck

as part of a renovation, you will need building consent if the deck is more than one metre above the ground. Contact the city council for advice.

If you are doing the work yourself, make sure you use the correct grade of timber treatment, have the right gaps between decking boards (approximately 6mm between decking boards and 12mm between the deck and building walls).

This is important for drainage

and to resist rotting. Use bolts and flashing suitable for decks and make sure barriers comply with the building code.

Balconies Rotting balconies, decks and balustrades have been identified as a significant safety hazard. Important construction and design requirements for balconies, to make sure they don’t leak and rot, include: •A step-down from the doorsill •A slope on the balcony floor

•A gap between the balcony and the wall claddings •Taking care around junctions to ensure weathertightness •Using correctly treated timber Swimming pools There are a number of different ways to build a swimming pool, from buying a ready-made pool which sits on top of the ground and requires minimal work to install, to having a custom-made in-ground pool built on site.

Placement of the pool will

depend on your section and the position of the house, but you should also consider the impact of sunlight, access, trees and privacy.

You will probably need to engage a chartered professional engineer to test the ground for stability.

You can have fun with the shape when you custom design your pool. If you want to swim laps, a basic rectangle would be best. Or consider a large area for kids’ play and smaller areas off to one side for a quiet soaking. Some pools integrate a spa pool.

Consider in-pool lighting for night swimming, as well as lighting around the edge of the pool.

Custom-made pools can also come in a range of colours. The other thing to consider is landscaping – tiling the pool edges or using gardens, rocks and waterfalls.

Take care with the types of plants and trees that will drop a lot of leaves or seeds into the pool. You must fence the pool area.

There are very specific fencing requirements set down by the fencing of swimming pools act and the building code. Finally, don’t forget about filtration systems and whether you want to heat the pool or not.

There are companies that offer a complete design package.

Avoid the clutter – go minimalist For a garden that’s both easy-care and easy on the eye the ‘less is more’ look is worth considering SIMPLE, UNCLUTTERED garden design is especially appropriate when space is limited.

Whether you want a serene look or something dramatic, you can achieve it by mass planting just a few carefully chosen plant species, each with strong features.

Flowers are not essential (year round good looks and healthy foliage are more important), but as seasonal highlights they can make the garden all the more interesting.

Mass planting by itself can be dull. Break up the monotony by choosing an accent plant that can be repeated throughout the design.

Planting in pots adds extra zing and makes it easy to change or relocate your accent plants when you feel like a new look, or a change between seasons.

As well as accents, every garden needs a strong focal point. Often a sculpture, this could also be a piece of furniture or garden architecture,

Container gardening is a great way to enjoy getting your hands dirty in winter. The trend is towards simplicity – bigger pots and less of them.

Classy containers deserve classy plants, and those that last the distance. For pots in prime positions choose plants with a strong welldefined shape, preferably symmetrical so that they look good from all angles.

Cordyline Red Fountain is one such plant. Its cascading mass of

bright burgundy leaves rises from a short central base, becoming thicker and more lavish with time.

Tolerant of dry spells, Cordyline Red Fountain performs exceptionally well in a large pot. Another spectacular container plant is Cordyline Caruba Black.

With wide shiny purple-black leaves and a strongly upright habit (up to 1.2m tall by 45cm wide), it makes a striking contrast in both colour and form. Bromeliads and slow growing cycads (sago palms) are ideal container plants for warm climates.

The favourite bromeliad for big pots is Alcantarea imperialis, a stunningly symmetrical plant with bold leathery leaves.

Alcantera is a warm climate plant but will tolerate cold nights, and even light frosts once settled.

Containers offer a no fuss way to enjoy the seasonal colour of bulbs and flowering annuals.

When flowering stops, pots can be replanted or simply moved from view.

A fabulous summer accent plant for a warm climate garden is Canna Tropicanna. Fantastic in

large containers, it is loved for its fiery striped leaves, followed by tall bright orange flower spikes. Cut right back in autumn the vibrant leaves reappear with fresh brilliance in spring.

When we plant whole groups of a few carefully chosen varieties, the effect is bold and deliberate, bringing strength and character to the garden. But not all plants are suitable for mass planting. Anything with a downtime is going to be a blot on your landscape for a large part of the year. So the first priority is to choose a plant that looks great for at least most of the year.

Good foliage and form are important. Flowers or berries are a bonus. Contrasting foliage colours can be fantastic in a mass planted situation, but large blocks of yellow or variegated foliage risk looking sickly.

Although some plants look great without their clothes on, deciduous plants in general are not the best for mass planting.

You can get away with it, however, if the leafless phase is brief and supported by an evergreen mass planted in equal measure – for example, shrub roses with box hedging in a bold geometric design that holds your interest.

The nursery began in the outdoor area of one of the units, shifting to tunnel houses in Hohepa in 2009. The trauma caused by the devastating Canterbury earthquakes was especially severe in Hohepa with soil damage and a lot of challenges for The Nursery, which relocated Christmas 2010 to their current location.

Five volunteers work at the nursery. Their assistance and dedication is appreciated.

Parents are also fighting back against childhood obesity, wanting lower fat and less sugar in their own home cooking and on restaurant menus.

Healthy nuts and seeds are seen as carb-cutting and a survey on snacking found that 77 per cent of Americans have nuts in their pantries and use

them in meals. Unusual and ancient grains such as farro, spelt and kamut (all types of wheat), and amaranth — a seed — are taking the place of rice or pasta in some meals. They contain healthy antioxidants as well as protein and other nutritional goodies.

Fermented foods such as black garlic are “trending”. This is a relatively new product here but is a taste sensation many people will enjoy.

are given a low-heat treatment in a confined enclosure for 60 days. During that time the sugar levels increase to 60 brix (the sugar level in an aqueous solution), the garlic “ferments” and becomes black.

CHOCOLATE POTATO TRUFFLES The mashed potato must be free of seasonings, cream and butter. It should also be very well mashed and have a smooth consistency.

1 cup dark chocolate chips 1/2 cup cold cooked mashed potatoes 1/2 tsp vanilla essence 4-5 pieces crystallised ginger Dark cocoa powder for dusting Place chocolate chips in a microwave-proof bowl. Melt on 50 per cent power for about 2 minutes. When completely melted, stir into mashed potato very well.

Add vanilla essence and stir well again. The mixture should be smooth. Chill for 30 minutes.

Cut ginger into thirds or quarters. Take a tablespoon of potato mixture and roll around a piece of ginger.

Repeat with remaining mixture. Place on a plate and dust with dark cocoa powder.

Roll into small balls. Dust with cocoa. Refrigerate until firm.

POTATO & SQUID SALAD This is based on a Peta Mathias recipe that she will be demonstrating at the Christchurch Food Show, April 4-6.

400g waxy potatoes 4 eggs, free-range/organic, if possible 1 large shallot 4 tbsp olive oil 1-2 tsp diced or crushed chilli 100g squid rings 8 pitted black olives 8 anchovies, oil retained 2 tbsp white-wine vinegar Flaky sea salt

Peel potatoes. Place in cold, lightly salted water. Bring to boil. Simmer, until cooked.

Don’t overcook. Slice thickly.

Meanwhile, place eggs in cold water. Bring to boil.

Simmer for 5-6 minutes. Cool, then peel and quarter. Slice shallot and place in icy water to crisp.

Heat a little of the olive oil in a frying pan. Add diced chilli.

Saute squid rings for about 2 minutes, until just cooked.

Combine with potatoes, shallot, eggs, olives and anchovies in a bowl.

Make a dressing using remaining olive oil, a little oil from the anchovies and vinegar.

GLUTEN-FREE POTATO PASTRY 450g cooked warm mashed potato 100g butter, chopped 1 & 1/4 cups rice flour 1/2 cup cornflour 1 tsp salt 1 egg, lightly beaten Place warm mashed potato and butter in a large bowl and mix well. Add rice flour, cornflour, salt and egg. Mix well. Use your hand to mix it, if easier. Wrap the dough in a plastic bag. Set aside for 30 minutes to rest.

Roll out to about 1cm thickness or thinner. Great for pie pastry

Balsamic vinegar isn’t just for splashing on salads – you can also use it to flavour sausages for a tasty midweek meal.

Ingredients 12 Chipolata sausages, (your choice of meat) 2 Tbsp Olive oil 6 pieces Thyme 250g Mushrooms, sliced 150g Cherry tomatoes 3 Tomatoes 2 Tbsp Balsamic vinegar 6 Ciabatta rolls, or long rolls 1 to serve Chutney ½ cup Rocket

Directions Preheat oven to 220 deg C. Place the sausages in a roasting dish with a little oil and the thyme sprigs.

Cook for 10 minutes, then add the mushrooms and both kinds of tomatoes. Drizzle over the remaining oil and the balsamic vinegar.

Cook for a further 10 minutes, until the sausages are golden brown and cooked.

Split the rolls in half and warm them in the oven for the final 5 minutes of the sausage cooking time.

Serve the sausages piled on to the rolls and top with the tomatoes, mushrooms, chutney or tomato sauce and a few leaves of rocket.

Steak 2 Porterhouse steaks, about 350g in total 2 cloves Garlic, crushed 2 TbspButter, for cooking Bearnaise sauce ¾ cup Dry white wine 1 TbspTarragon vinegar, or cider vinegar 1 small Shallot, finely diced ½ tsp Tarragon, dried 2 tsp Fresh parsley, finely chopped 1 tsp Freshly ground black pepper 2 large Eggs, yolks only 100g Butter, melted

Directions Rub steaks with crushed garlic. Sprinkle generously with black pepper. Stand in a cool place while preparing sauce.

Combine wine, vinegar, shallot, parsley, tarragon and black pepper in a saucepan. Simmer until reduced by two-thirds. Cool then strain.

Whisk egg yolks in top part of a double boiler. Place over barely simmering water.

Whisk in strained wine. Slowly whisk in butter until light and fluffy.

To cook steak, melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a heavy frying pan. Cook steaks about 3-4 minutes each side for medium-rare. Rest for a few minutes before serving.

Top each steak with bearnaise and serve remainder on the side.

Gluten-free carrot cake with cream cheese icing

¼ cup each: sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds

Ingredients 1 cup brown sugar 2 large eggs ¾ cup grapeseed oil 1 cup gluten-free flour mix ½ tsp each: salt, baking soda 1 tsp each: baking powder, ground mixed spice, vanilla essence 1 and ½ cups coarsely grated carrots ½ cup sultanas Cream cheese icing: 75g cream cheese, softened ½ tsp vanilla essence 1 and ¼ cups sifted icing sugar

Directions Preheat oven to 180 deg C. Line a 20cm round cake pan with baking paper.

Cream sugar and eggs in a large mixing bowl. Beat in oil, until smooth.

Combine dry ingredients and sift into wet ingredients. Stir until blended. Stir in vanilla essence, grated carrots and sultanas. Pour into pan. Bake for 40 minutes or until a skewer inserted in centre comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack.

Cream icing sugar and cream cheese until smooth. Spread over cold cake.

Sprinkle with seeds.

This time, Jack is co-opted back into the military to lend his services to a plot to assassinate one of the world’s leaders after an unsuccessful attempt on the French president.

As a result, most of the action is based in Paris or London, with Jack and rookie CIA operative Casey Nice

going off programme to locate a former army sniper who Reacher had sent to jail when he was an MP. They take on a couple of London criminal gangs who they believe have done a deal with the sniper.

The action and settings are typical Reacher.

The language is blunt and to-the-point as always.

This isn’t a run-of-themill Jack Reacher thriller, though, and all the more compelling because of it.

Making smart choices for our city Dear Residents, When we were elected last year as your Council, we said we would be up-front about the decisions we were making and why.

That’s why we decided to ‘open the books’ so we could all see the extent of the financial challenges we face and what choices we could make.

We need you to be fully involved if we are going to make the right choices – the smart choices.

It is important for you to understand that there are some decisions we can make as a Council and others we can only make with the agreement of our partner in the rebuild, the Government.

For example, under the Cost Sharing Agreement made between the Council and Crown in June 2013, the parties jointly committed $4.8 billion towards the rebuild of our city.

More than half of this was earmarked to repair our roads and pipes – $1.8 billion from the Crown, and $1.14 billion from the Council. However the final costs are likely to be higher but we won’t know how they will be shared until an independent review comes out in November. Nor do we yet know how much our final insurance settlement will be.

As we prepare our Long Term Plan for the next 10 years we are going to have to be very clear about our priorities and be open to new ways of working with business and the community to get things done.

Next March you will have the chance to tell us what you think about this Plan. But right now we need to get a sense of what projects and services you think the Council should be prioritising and how we might pay for them.

That is why it is vital we get input from all parts of our community because the decisions we make will have a significant impact on everyone in Christchurch – not just now but for future generations.

• We are already paying $60 million per year in interest on our existing debt and we borrow more than a third of that.

We need to look at all available options, and choose the combination that best meets the city’s needs.

Impreza STi a car IT’S GOOD to know there are still a few cars left in the marketplace which are biased solely towards performance.

The global manufacturing trend towards emission efficiency and fuel economy had somewhat stifled that part of the market, but it’s slowly coming back and manufacturers are increasing the number of affordable, quick cars off the showroom floor.

Of course, there’s always been the usual supply of exotics, that will never change, and I’m pleased to report that Subaru haven’t let their well-performing Impreza WRX go, it is just as desirable now as it ever was.

Subaru, too, also cater for those who want more than the WRX offers, it is also available off-the-floor in STi form, an extension of the WRX, it is biased towards the extreme.

I felt quite privileged to have some quality time in the STi, it is a true champion in terms of output and handling ability and it does so in an understated way, it looks little different to the WRX, and apart from a few cosmetic details it is hard to imagine it has the goods which place it in a high performing category.

And while it could easily be described as manic, such is its personality, it is also an easy-to-drive model at city speeds, it is docile, and far from a challenge in traffic, yet stand on the throttle and it lunges with turbo boost

SUBARU WRX STI: High performance Impreza for the road or track. that is dynamic.

Unlike the WRX which is available as a manual or continuously variable transmission, the STi is a six-speed manual only. The gear lever slots accurately and has a close, crisp feel about its movement, there is little chance of wrongslotting and the clutch, while firm, is progressive with plenty of pick-up feel.

Under the bonnet sits a 2.5-litre, horizontallyopposed (boxer), quadcamshaft engine which Subaru rates at 221kW and 407Nm. These are high outputs thanks to high pressure turbo boost, yet the areas where these figures are developed are met at usable parts of the rev band – 6000rpm and 4000rpm respectively. The result is a strong torque flow from low revs until the point of redline.

I didn’t redline it at all, there is so much satisfaction to be gleaned from letting the turbo boost through the mid-range. The engine has an angry tone under

load but that is something the driver can also gain enjoyment from, it offers all of the right harmonics and delivers with a rush that ushers in vivid acceleration.

Also, I don’t like placing huge stress on mechanical components so I didn’t ask a lot from the STi at launch, but it likes to accelerate rapidly and is a delight when it does.

Independent reports have the STi lunging to 100km/h from a standstill in just over 5sec while against my stopwatch it blasts through a highway overtake in around 3.5sec which are quick figures and ones which satisfy, the STi is quick in all gears, it enjoys freedom and responds accordingly.

In true Subaru form drive is sent through all four wheels. Subaru has added some technological gadgetry into the STi that will have been handed down from its rally programmes.

Interestingly, there’s a centre differential power channelling device which the driver can use to balance drive front to rear.

NOW ON for the performance driver It is something that you would use when grip is low and to satisfy your desire for oversteer, but I left it in auto mode most of the time, I certainly wasn’t gong to drive the car to the point where grip was marginal.

Instead, I kept to where grip was high, the tight twists and turns of the Summit Rd were ideal for the STi, it has steering feel that is firm yet feeds back all the nuances of the road surface and what the tyres are doing in relation to that.

The Dunlop Sport rubber isn’t huge at 245/40 x 18in, but grip is unyielding and that is enhanced by all four wheels providing drive.

The STi blasts between corners with an acceleration rush that is infectious, strong brakes also provide surety while turn-in and accuracy are unsurpassed.

There is a little trade-off, the STi is firm underneath and while there is some compliance, it won’t absorb those ruts that form many of Christchurch’s roads.

That is a small price to pay, the STi is a car for the enthusiast and it delivers in other areas.

Stewart fit for qualifying final

MANLY STAR Brett Stewart is set to play in tonight’s NRL qualifying final against South Sydney after training strongly at the club’s Narrabeen base on Wednesday.

Stewart was a late withdrawal from Manly’s final round loss to North Queensland in Townsville on Saturday due to an ankle injury, but was showing no ill effects as he trained alongside teammates ahead of the finals opener at Allianz Stadium.

The superstar fullback was put through a number of drills that tested out his ankle and was later fully involved in opposed play as the media were shooed away.

Sea Eagles winger Jorge Taufua said he was looking forward to reuniting with Stewart against Souths.

“He is extremely important for us, he is the polish on all our backline moves,” Taufua told the AAP. “It is great to have him back, he is a crucial part of what we do and

I know he is really keen to get out there on Friday night.”

In a further boost to the Sea Eagles’ chances prop Brenton Lawrence declared himself ready to take on the Rabbitohs after overcoming a knee complaint that has ruled him out of the last two games.

“The knee is fine, it is not going to hold me back at all,” Lawrence said.

Kiwi golf fans bunkered THESE ARE interesting times for sports broadcasting.

Sky’s announcement earlier this week that it had lost the rights to the PGA Tour appeared to come out of nowhere.

That it wasn’t outbid, but rather the golf bodies themselves appear to be moving towards providing the content, is somewhat startling.

What’s a golf fan to do?

Diehards will cough up for this new service, whatever form it takes.

But they’re not going to be able to chuck their Sky decoders in the trash, because how else will they see the Ryder Cup, the Masters and The Open, all of which Sky still has the rights to?

This is a problem we have at the moment.

The unbundling of sports is happening in piecemeal fashion, and it’s sports fans who are hurting.

The brilliance of Sky’s dominance of sports broadcasting in New Zealand was that it kept everything in one place.

There were always little problems, but those were mostly when fans of one sport were slighted at the expense of another.

BOGEY: The New Zealand public will be seeing less of top-level golfers such as Rory McIlroy next year, after Sky missed out on the rights to the PGA Tour.

The early movers into the online streaming market, such as the NBA and NFL, did so to offer all of their product in a way that was

impossible on TV. For the most part, that was the same deal with Premier League Pass, which shows twice as many games live as Sky ever could.

But now, sports fans are facing the prospect of being asked to fork over for a product that was doing just fine over the airwaves.

In this case, I’m lucky.

Golf is very much on the periphery of the sports I care about.

But what if I was crazy for it?

I’d have to pay up, but as a fan of so many other sports as well, I’d also be stuck paying Sky. Even down the line, when I might have half a dozen sports that I subscribe to directly, I can’t see Sky becoming obsolete.

If nothing else, it’d surely still have the All Blacks.

Our national sports need Sky’s money, and they need Sky to be an attractive product, which means it needs all the rights it can get.

If the exodus continues, fans might not be the only ones who suffer.

Women face even football final

COASTAL SPIRIT want the Reta Fitzpatrick Cup back.

They won it every year between 2008 and 2012, but missed out on the final altogether last time around.

Now they’re back, but must overcome Universities, who are the only Canterbury side to have beaten them this season, if they are to lay their hands on it again.

That result meant Coastal lost the Hawkey Shield and making up for that would help spur them on in tomorrow’s final, said coach

Alana Gunn.

“It’s very dear to the girls, so they will be definitely having that as motivation I guess, as well as the Reta itself. We lost it last year in the semi-final, and that kind of upset the girls as well. They like that trophy, so hopefully those two factors are enough motivation for them.”

She said finals were a different beast to prepare for.

A win tomorrow would be the perfect end to a successful season for Uni, said coach Dan Clarkson.

“The goal this year for the team was a top-three finish, so to get third in the league was a fantastic achievement, but to also win the Hawkey Shield as well, that was a fantastic achievement too.”

He said there was very little between the two sides.

“I think they’re hard to separate now, because we both know how each other play so well. Everyone knows everyone in the teams –

they know how each other plays.”

In addition to their win last time out, Uni also took Coastal to a penalty shootout during a knockout cup tie back at the beginning of May. Gunn said they were the local side that had tended to play the best against Coastal this year.

“They’re a good side. They’ve been led very well and are continuously growing, so I guess coming into this game, they’ve had more weeks together so they’re only going to be stronger.”

“We really do need to step up if we’re going to win the trophy.”

TOM TAYLOR will return for Canterbury against Wellington tonight, after four weeks out recovering from an eye injury suffered in their season opener.

While he’s been unavailable, Canterbury have struck a rich vein of form.

“I was really impressed. It’s hard – I was sitting at home wanting to be in every game really, so now I get my chance and it’s come around pretty quick,” said Taylor.

He’s made the most of his spell on the sideline.

“I think it’s an important time, you’ve got to make the most of it I suppose, whole you can’t Tom Taylor be out there you’ve got to help out as much as you can, and I was able to do a bit of preview work for the other games,’’ he said.

Taylor will start at first-five, after Tyler Bleyendaal was ruled out for the season with a prolapsed disc in his neck.

He said Bleyendaal had broke the news to him personally.

“Tyler told me a couple of days ago. I knew something wasn’t right.

I was gutted for him, I’m actually really gutted – I love playing with Tyler. We are on the same page when we play together and I hope he goes alright with his (possible) surgery and gets sorted. I was just as gutted as him. It was really disappointing – he’s such a good player and he’s certainly going to be missed in our team.”

Coach Scott Robertson has made three other changes from last week’s win over Otago, with Joel Everson replacing Matt Symons, Codie Taylor swapping with Ben Funnell, and Nathaniel Apa set to make his first start in place of the injured Milford Keresoma.

Defence key for cup final

The local cup was the only trophy they missed out on last year, and having already defended their Mainland Premier League, South Island, and Chatham Cup titles, they’re desperate to add it to their collection this time around.

At the heart of Tech’s success has been their unwavering defence, led by brothers Tom and Dan Schwarz in the centre.

“Our confidence can’t be higher at the moment,” said Dan. “I think we’re all happy to defend.

We’re a very hard-working team. I think it’s just the hard work and organisation – we all get stuck in and we’re all fighting for the clean sheet before we go for goals to be honest.

We take a lot of pride in keeping a shutout, so hopefully we can do another one.”

Having his brother alongside him was a big help, he said.

“We’ve played with each other for years and years, as long as I can remember. He helps my game and I like to think I help his game a little bit. We don’t shirk away from telling each other if one of us is doing something right or wrong.”
