Police move to stop hoons refused BY GABRIELLE STUART Police asked for night-time access to some Woolston roads to be restricted, to discourage boy racers. But the Spreydon-Heathcote Community Board refused. Five roads in the Woolston industrial area were to be included under a city council bylaw, which already covers more than 50 roads across the city. Between the hours of 10pm and 5am, only “legitimate users” would be able to use those roads. Anyone else caught there could be fined $750. Community board chairman Paul McMahon said he needed to see evidence himself before he restricted people’s access to roads. But the decision split the board, with community board
member Rik Tindall saying the board needed to trust police. Police detained a group of about 250 boy racers who gathered in nearby Bromley in 2012, after some of the group were reported doing burnouts and being disorderly. The roads looked at were Chapmans Rd, Mary Muller Drive, Caerphilly Pl, Brightlings Rd and Lock Cres; which were put forward by the police as problem areas. Mr McMahon said the board didn’t have enough data to support the police request. “If we’re going to restrict the right of people to move along those streets we need to see some evidence ourselves. Anecdotal evidence isn’t enough, we actually need some data.” •Turn to page 2
