A Redwood family will have a warmer home next winter after See receiving free curtains salvaged Inside: from earthquake-damaged homes.

Local charitable trust Community Energy Action is collecting curtains from demolished homes, lining them and giving them away to needy families.

See Danielle Hardy, her partner Inside: and two small children were some of the many people who benefited from free curtains from the curtain bank.

“We recently bought this place but the curtains that came with it, you could see right through. At night we would have lots of draughts. The master bedroom didn’t have any curtains at all. We used to feel the chill on our faces.

“I heard about the curtain bank through an aunt and got onto the website right away.”

Her partner measured the windows and she went straight to the curtain bank, where she received free curtains for her lounge and bedrooms.

“Now it’s definitely much warmer. It sounds like something small but it definitely stops the cold coming off the windows.”

COZY: Redwood resident Danielle Hardy and her family have a warmer home after receiving new curtains through the Community Energy Action charitable trust. bank has been recycling curtains for nearly 20 years, however, this year it has had more curtains donated than ever.

Trust chief executive Caroline Shone said that with so many houses, hotels and businesses being demolished, the curtains had been flooding in.

“We received more than twice the amount of curtains last year than the year before. It’s great, as we have been able to help more people that need curtains.

“Anyone who cannot afford curtains, please just give us a call, we’re here to help.”

Last year the curtain bank received more than 24,000 sq m of curtain fabric, more than twice the amount of the year before, and helped nearly 500 families with free curtains.

Anybody who cannot afford good curtains can use the curtain bank. Homeowners, private tenants and Housing NZ or city council tenants are all eligible.

But Ms Coster said she was concerned that was because of the weather, and the problem would become as bad or worse in summer.

She believed that the city council was putting the needs of the homeless above the safety and health of residents.

“I suppose they have to be politically correct, because these are people who have no houses and nowhere else to go. But I am concerned that they’re ignoring the people who pay rates and deserve to live in the area in safety.”

She and her teenage daughter were afraid to go out at night because of the problems in the area.

City council community libraries manager Erica Rankin said in her report to the board that the decision would be reconsidered in the future, if overnight use of the car park became a significant issue.

Possible measures she suggested include trialling a barrier over the car park entry, or holding a crime prevention assessment of the area.

Ms Coster believed the free Wi-Fi at the library was part of the reason people congregated in the area, and asked for it to be turned off at night.

But staff said that free 24-hour Wi-Fi was a “core library service” which was provided at all city council libraries.

Group whips up baking contest to support church

Allenvale student off to Olympics Bradley Garner, 20, has just been selected to represent New Zealand in basketball at the Special Olympics World Summer Games next year.

The Allenvale School student is the only Canterbury basketball player to be chosen in the team for next July’s event.

In spite of the challenges that his autism can bring, Bradley is a dedicated, enthusiastic student, and a great role model for the other students at his school.

Bradley has been play-

ing basketball for Allenvale since he was 13 and has been part of the Special Olympics Canterbury team for four years.

He has competed in the Special Olympics nationals in 2009 and 2013 for the school team.

“Basketball gives me great skills and makes me fit. It also gives me the skills of participation and good sportsmanship,” said Bradley.

He is now fundraising for the $10,000 he needs to get to the world games.

A community group facing funding problems has turned to the kitchen to keep their programmes running.

The BelfastRedwood Anglican Parish runs several community programmes in the area for elderly, youth and young families.

Emily Cross They are planning a community baking competition and baking auction to raise funds to keep the programmes going.

Fundraising committee organiser Heather Sheridan said the majority of the church members were pensioners, and the church could no longer afford to fund the programmes alone.

The members would need about $10,000 to keep supporting the church and community programmes.

She said that the members were faced with either raising the majority of the funds privately, or cutting back on their programmes.

The baking competition and auction will be held on September 13 at the St Silas Church hall in Redwood.

The competition will be Marcus Braun judged by Emily Cross, who works as an assistant to celebrity cook Jo Seagar and has won the New Zealand Apprentice Chef of the Year award, and Marcus Braun, who is a tutor to the New Zealand Pastry Team.

Mrs Sheridan said she hoped the competition could become an annual event.

Isabella, you have a lovely accent, where are you from?

I grew up in Greenock in Renfrewshire – now called Inverclyde [in Scotland] – in the 1960s. It was pretty tough, we grew up in a council housing estate, just after the war. In a way it was great, there were lots of parties, but there was also a lot of alcohol problems. I had six brothers and two sisters, and my father was a whaler so he was away a lot. My mother was basically a solo parent, but the neighbours always pitched in and helped. I finished school at 15 and left home at 16.

What made you leave?

There was a lot of big social family problems going on. A friend of mine, her parents had just split up, and she was going to London to live with her mother. She asked me to come with her, so I left and stayed with her mother and partner for six years. I left with a blanket, a pound note and a guitar.

What did you plan to do from there?

In those days there was plenty of work, after the war. The family took us [my friend and I] to a labour exchange and I became

a factory worker. I worked in different factories from age 15 to 24. The first one, before I left, was the Greenock Ropeworks.

You used to have massive slabs of tree bark, they had to be lifted, flattened and oiled. The rope would come through flattened and oiled, and I had to push it into the barrel. You could never stop the production line, but the older women in the factory used to sabotage the machines so we’d get a break.

The worst part about that job was you’d smell of the oil and get oil blisters, and at 15 I started to think about boys and how I looked. I soon left that job and went to another factory. I have had about 40 different jobs over my life. I

have been waitressing and I’m even a trained counsellor.

So how did you get into performing?

I started very, very young.

Music was very much a part of

my background. My mother was a lovely singer and her brother was a concert hall singer. My father’s family were performers, so the two of them [my parents] loved to play the guitar and sing. My first performance was at a house concert.

I would only have been about four. People would gather for a house party or house concert – well really it started as a concert and ended as a party. There might be 30 people there, and you’d have a door charge to get in. When I left home and lived in London, I spent time in music circles and busking. Through busking I got offered a spot at the Manly Summer Festival in Sydney.

has come a long way SINGING IN SYDNEY: Isabella Miller Bell at the Manly Summer Festival in 1982, her first professional role.

How did that happen, were you approached on the street?

No, I went to Sydney to do busking and in those days you had to get a licence to busk.

That included an audition, so I did the busking audition for the council and they liked it. It just happened that they were planning the festival at the time, so they asked me to be part of it. I was probably in my late 20s then.

How did you end up in Christchurch?

I lived in London for some time, and I was a great traveller.

I travelled three times around Europe and eastern, and met a man from Christchurch along

the way. We travelled together a lot and came to Christchurch in 1978, then back to Aussie. In 1987 we moved permanently to Christchurch. Could you tell me about your family?

I have two sons, Sean and Jaime. One’s an architect in Adelaide and the other is a digital producer in Sydney. I have a big family back in Scotland but I don’t see them so much. The boys’ father, my ex-husband now, went to Australia and I guess the boys went too so they could see a bit of the world.

Where do you live now?

I live in Redcliffs, I’ve lived here for 10 years probably. I was originally in Somerfield, and

brought the boys up there.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I wash dishes, I garden, I go out and listen to other performers. I’m also a Buddhist practitioner.

How did you pick up Buddhism, was that on your travels?

Yes, I have travelled through the east a couple of times, and I guess with leaving home early I have always been curious and a bit of a soul searcher. I’m not very religious, Buddhism is more of a science of the mind.

It’s a good refuge for myself.

So how do you run the Sumner Cabaret?

That’s been running for three years now. I always try to get local performers, and I always feature myself – kind of like Alfred Hitchcock – he always gives himself a pat on the back in movies. Usually there are four acts, and sometimes there is burlesque or puppetry. The concert experience for the performer and audience is very different to a restaurant or bar.

They’re not background any more, the people are actually there to hear the music.

So how much longer will the show go for?

I’ve got one more show still to do this year, but because I’m moving around it is hard to organise. My house is being repaired now, so I’ve moved out and everything is hard to

access. I think I’ll do another show around October, November, December. I’ve got one scheduled in the back of my mind for before the end of the year. I might start focusing on younger artists, to give them the boost they need in front of an audience.

What would your advice be to young performers wanting to make it big?

The ‘making it big’ is a tricky one. I haven’t made it big, so I haven’t found the answer. Lets say you’re a songwriter – like Lorde for instance – you have to have the right look, be in the right age group and have all the right people around you to make it happen. Even if you make it big, it doesn’t last forever.

So why do you continue with music?

It has to be about the love for music itself. It’s being there for the community and lifting their spirits. I did have a good go but I didn’t make it commercial. I was a late bloomer, you could say. One of the Buddhist principles is you work for the good of all, and I try to work for that. I know it sustains the spirits of the audience that comes in, and at the end of the day I think that’s what it’s about.

Music is also about storytelling, and with my huge life I have a story. You’re just trying to connect with someone else’s story as well.

Work starts on new child cancer building A short walk from the hospital, the foundation offered a place for families to meet other families, volunteers and staff.

Child Cancer Foundation chief executive Robyn Kiddle said that being close to the hospital would be a bonus for the team.

“It means that, after more than three years of moving our family support team to various locations, we will now be able to offer our families a permanent base back where we have always operated from.

“Like so many other Cantabrians we are really excited about starting a project that can bring back something of normality to our children and our parents.”

She said that the project wouldn’t be possible without the assistance of sponsors and partners, and staff were very grateful for their continuing support.

After months of working from car boots and public libraries, staff at the Child Cancer Foundation was excited to see work start on their new building last week.

The building will be constructed on the foundation’s original Cashel St site, and is expected to open early next year.

Since their building was destroyed in the February 2011 earthquake, the Christchurch team have worked across the city from their own homes, the boots of their cars, the Westpac Community and Business Hub, bedrooms at YMCA Christchurch, cafes and libraries.

For the last two years staff have used a building provided by the Christchurch International Airport as a base.

The original family place was visited by an average of 25 families per month as well as staff, volunteers and health professionals.

Something fishy PAN-FRIED SOLE WITH WET POLENTA, GARLIC, CHILLI AND BASIL Serves 4

GOAN FISH CURRY Serves 4 This curry has lots of levels of flavour. It is sweet and tangy and very fragrant. Use a firm fish, such as monkfish, hapuku or kingfish, that will hold its shape once cooked. Serve with brown rice.

INGREDIENTS 1 Onion, thinly sliced 4 cloves Garlic, minced 2cm Fresh ginger, finely chopped 20 Curry leaves 1 tsp Mustard seeds 1 Chilli, finely sliced, optional 2 tsp Ground cumin 3 tsp Ground coriander 4 Star anise 6 Cloves 2 Tbsp Brown sugar 2 Tbsp Tamarind concentrate, mixed with 2 Tbsp water 2 Tomatoes, chopped 1 can Coconut milk 150g Green beans, trimmed 2 Red peppers, diced 600g Monkfish fillets, or other firm fish, cut into 3cm pieces 1 to serve Coriander DIRECTIONS Heat a drizzle of oil in a large pan with high sides over medium high heat. Cook the onions until soft and slightly coloured, about 5 minutes, add the garlic, ginger,

curry leaves, mustard seeds, chili (if using), cumin, coriander, turmeric, star anise and cloves.

Cook, stirring often, for a few minutes until it smells fragrant.

Add the brown sugar, tamarind and coconut milk and let it come to a rapid simmer.

Add the green beans, peppers and fish and cook until the fish is just cooked through and the vegetables are cooked but still crunchy. Scatter over some coriander leaves and serve with brown rice.

TO COOK BROWN RICE Combine 2 cups brown rice, 3 cups water and 1 tsp salt in a pot and bring to the boil. Cover with a tight-fitting lid, reduce the heat to low and let it cook for 15 minutes.

Remove from the heat and let it steam for a further 7 minutes.

Don’t open the lid at all during this time.

INGREDIENTS 4 servings polenta, use wet polenta from the recipe below 120ml Olive oil 450g Fish, use sole fillets, skin removed and seasoned 2 cups Baby spinach 5 cloves Garlic, peeled and finely sliced 1½ Red chillies, large, seeds removed and finely sliced 1½ cups Fresh basil, picked, washed and roughly torn 1 Lemon, freshly juiced Wet polenta 400ml Milk 40g Polenta 1 Tbsp Butter 50g Parmesan cheese, shaved or ground

plates, scatter with baby spinach and top with sole fillets.

In the pan in which the fish was cooked, heat the remaining oil over medium heat. Add garlic and chilli and cook for 10 to 15 seconds until garlic begins to turn golden. Add basil and lemon juice, remove from heat, pour sauce evenly over the fish, season with salt and pepper and serve immediately.

WET POLENTA Bring milk to the boil in a small saucepan over low to medium heat.

Pour into a stainless steel bowl and place over a pot of boiling water.

Add the polenta and whisk occasionally for 2 to 3 minutes until grains start to thicken.

Cover with plastic wrap and cook for 10 to 15 minutes or until the grains are soft. Season with salt and pepper and whisk in butter and parmesan.

DIRECTIONS Heat wet polenta in a small saucepan with a little milk over a medium heat, stirring often to avoid catching. Once warmed, remove from heat and reserve.

Heat half the olive oil in a non-stick frying pan over a high heat and cook sole, being careful not to overcook.

AVOCADO SALSA Avocados are superb salsa ingredients. Their creamy green character and smooth texture is enhanced with colour and taste when combined with stronger flavours. This is brilliant on freshly pan-fried, grilled or barbecued fish. You could expand it by marinating some fresh fish in lemon juice for a couple of hours, drain off the lemon, mix the fish through this salsa and present it on a bed of crispy lettuce, such as iceberg or cos, torn into bite sized pieces.

INGREDIENTS 2 Mangoes, diced 2 Red peppers, roasted, peeled and diced 2 Tomatoes, diced 2 Avocados, diced 1 Red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped ¼ Preserved lemon, finely sliced ¼ cup Fresh mint ¼ cup Fresh coriander, leaves 1 splash Avocado oil 1 splash Fresh lime juice, or use lemon juice 1 splash Fish sauce ¼ cup Red onion, sliced thinly or finely chopped DIRECTIONS

Finely chop the fresh mint and coriander.

Mix the mango, red pepper, onion, tomato, preserved lemon and chilli together. Stir in the herbs and dress with a splash of avocado oil, lime or lemon juice and fish sauce to bind together.

Salsa should be served fresh but letting this sit for half an hour will allow the flavours to marry.

Plan ahead for spring The Importance Krill oil of good blood

August may be a slow time in the vege patch in some respects, but there are a few things you can get on with in the weeks ahead that will put you in good stead for some bumper crops in the spring.

What to plant in August: (seedlings only), broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, perpetual spinach, silverbeet and garlic. Prepare now and protect against pests.

Plant the right companion flowers in August to attract beneficial insects into your garden, ready for when the pests turn up in spring! If you only have a small vege patch you may want to plant the companion flowers in pots, by doing this you can also move them around the patch, putting them close to any vegetables that pests have taken a liking to.

There are many companion plants you can use, here are my top three.

• Phacelia has little purpley-blue flowers that produce an abundance of pollen which attracts hoverflies. The Hoverfly larvae will be your own little army of natural allies for a number of vege garden pests including aphids, scale insects, mealy bugs and psyllids.

• French marigolds are

A hardy, annual plant, french marigolds should have their dead flowers regularly removed to encourage new growth. • Sage is a fantastic culinary herb, and also does wonders for the vege garden.

Grown as a border or in a container, its fragrant leaves will attract beneficial bees into the vege patch and repel pests such as carrot fly and cabbage moths simultaneously. As a perennial it is still protecting your plants during autumn and winter when some of the other

beneficial companions have died. In addition to planting beneficial companions, it is a good idea to let some of your winter vegetables such as broccoli, bok choy, pak choy and mustard lettuce go to seed, their flowers will attract the beneficial companions as well.

Start small – if you haven’t planted seeds before, give it a go now. By the time your seeds are ready to plant out as seedlings we will be well into spring and you will have saved yourself a packet.

Collect up some old yoghurt pots, egg cartons and seedling trays and recycle all your old newspapers too. It’s time to sow cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, lettuce, silverbeet, celery and spinach.

Later on in August, you can sow tomatoes, capsicum, melon and cucumber.

Women over 35 years of age should wait no more than six months before seeking the advice of a GP, more advanced tests for both partners usually require a specialist’s input.

Similarly, women who easily conceived a previous pregnancy may encounter diffculty conceiving again and should seek help if they have been trying for six to 12 months to expand their family without success.

It is also important to remember that male problems account for approximately a third of cases of fertility delay, so it is recommended that men see a doctor too. Often there are no signs of a male fertility problem until further assessment and testing is done.

he team of five Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, including a fertility specialist, collectively known as Christchurch Obstetrics and Gynaecology Association, or COGA, provide women with a full maternity service, from pre-conception to postnatal care.

Team member Angela Beard says, while pregnant women may choose to have a midwife as their lead maternity carer, it’s important they consider an obstetrician as well because these are qualified medical practitioners who have specialised in providing comprehensive pregnancy care.

“We encourage a shared care arrangement with midwives. We work with them and have a huge respect for them,” Angela says.

“However, if there are complications during the pregnancy, labour or birth, we can manage those. Midwives are free to refer patients to us if they believe a specialist is needed, especially in the case of high-risk patients.”

Women can also be referred to COGA by their GP, or can make an appointment themselves, she says.

Outstanding apprentice ‘typical’ of CPIT graduates

C

PIT Trades graduates are taking on the world by impressing the directors of some of the top firms in the field.

Recent graduate Tyrone Hellyer works at EPL, one of Australasia’s top manufacturing firms, as a toolmaking, fitting and turning engineer. Hellyer did a six months pretrades course through CPIT Trades and, after finishing, was taken on as an apprentice at EPL. He has now finished his apprenticeship and is working full-time for EPL. “EPL has been brilliant for me. I’m designing things on the computer, creating 3D models to make sure it works and then taking that information from on-screen and making it.”

Hellyer says the CPIT course gave him the “foot in the door” to land his dream job at EPL. “I think the course helped me to understand what engineering is all about and to then be able to apply these skills on a daily basis,” he says.

Managing director of EPL Tom Thomson says the company has a long-standing relationship with CPIT. “The CPIT tutors are involved with different businesses, making sure they’re in tune with what employers like myself want,” he says.

How a spelling error gave Cleveland its name

n 1796, a community of American settlers in Ohio developed into a town. The elders decided to call their town Cleaveland, after General Moses Cleaveland, a land surveyor who marked out the town’s boundaries.

In 1831 the town’s first proper newspaper was formed.

The editor wanted to make a big splash with the first edition, so he proclaimed the formation of The Cleveland Advertiser. There wasn’t enough width on the front page to put the big masthead type in one line. So he made an instant decision to leave out the first A in Cleaveland.

No one seemed to notice and the incorrect spelling stuck to the newspaper and city it served.

“Checking spelling is always important,” said Brian Morris, Principal of New Zealand Institute of Business Studies. “Whether a mistake is deliberate or accidental, the impact can last for years.

“That’s what also happened to the town of Novi. When stage coaches rolled out of Detroit, there were designated stopping points where passengers could alight or board the coach. The sixth stopping point had a simple trail sign ‘No VI’. Strong comeback on and off court for tennis

T

he last 12 months has seen a continued resurgence in many areas of the sport of tennis in Canterbury. For the second year in a row, playing numbers have risen. Our members clubs are doing a great job of attracting new players – young and old and the continued rebuild of club facilities is being undertaken with a great spirit in “Clubland” - the heart and soul of our game. This upcoming summer, new courts will come on line in Sumner. Redcliffs and Halswell completed their court resurfacing last season, Shirley are progressing well with a new clubhouse which will hopefully be

open early in 2015 and the fringe areas of Christchurch are also experiencing significant growth as Christchurch grows in new fresh directions with a new court complex at Tai Tapu opened late last year and Prebbleton refreshing their courts.

Competitively, Tennis Canterbury has shown that its junior players (now being able to again train year round with the interim reinstatement of the Z Energy Wilding Park Indoor Centre) are fierce competitors.

Success may have been limited in terms of individual National Championship titles last season, but collectively our Junior

Teams made giant strides to put the Tennis Canterbury Region back on the map in terms of results at the recent Tennis New Zealand National Teams Events. After failing to win a title in 2013 our players achieved their best results since the earthquakes with wins in the 12’s and 14’s Boys, Silver medals in both 16’s events and Bronze in the Girls 12’s.

It’s this collective strength which is

creating a great buzz – whether children are picking up rackets for the first time or older players are rediscovering their enjoyment of the sport after other things in life have taken priority. The sport is certainly in great heart.

Our clubs are keen to get their communities to utilise their great facilities either from a recreation or a more competitive sporting standpoint.

t’s difficult to find a spare tennis court in Christchurch on a Friday night or a Saturday morning as Tennis Canterbury’s Junior Interclub Competition continues to attract growing numbers.

Innovations bought in around five years ago to introduce low compression balls to younger grades has seen players retained in the sport for longer and increase their enjoyment levels while learning the game.

Many clubs have excellent junior programmes which aim to give children the ability to learn the game to a competent level before putting them into Interclub teams. This often occurs during the week after school or on Saturday mornings where a growing coaching network is creating progressive programmes to ease players into a sport that they can play for their whole life.

Over 350 teams of at least four play in grades from 9’s to under 20’s each week, and the fast growing size of competitions in the surrounding areas of North Canterbury, Malvern and Ellesmere is leading to Country courts being as busy as Town courts throughout the week.

At the top end of each age groups, interest in Tournament play is beyond where it was pre-quakes with a staggering 30 per cent increase in numbers in the recent Tennis Canterbury Junior Champs – as well as

conventional draws where you could face your own “Federer” in the first round, graded and club tournaments to provide similar ability competitions which are also scheduled throughout the year.

Every holidays, there are Tennis Canterbury-organised tournaments and over the school holidays wherever in the country you are there’s likely to be a Junior Tennis Tournament happening. Within our region events in Ashburton, Blenheim and Nelson create a great first time tournament experience, and this winter a Sunday club circuit was established which will ideally become a fixture on the calendar.

In addition to the elite Premier grades this year at least six divisions of Men’s teams made up generally of eight teams of four have great competition between players of like ability. With Z Energy Wilding Park now having the capacity to host more matches, it’s aimed to give all teams the ability to come together as a grade and play at one of Christchurch hallowed (if not bruised) iconic sporting venues. Three grades of divisional interclub are this year offered for women and there also 25 mixed teams who enjoy that format of play.
