Naked man coughs up $1500

christchurchstar.co.nz ABOUT FIVE million toy bricks that were swept off a cargo ship near Cornwall 17 years ago are still being washed up on British beaches – and are still being collected by diehard fans.

Tracey Williams, of Cornwall, who started the Lego Lost At Sea page on Facebook, has even had a report of a plastic flipper making landfall in Australia.

Ms Williams has collected up to 600 pieces.

She said: ‘There’s stories of kids in the late 90s having buckets of dragons on the beach, selling them. These days the holy grail is an octopus or a dragon.’

The toys, which also include plastic spear guns and cutlasses, were thrown overboard by a giant wave that hit the Tokio Express in 1997.

Oceanographer Curtis Ebbesmeyer said: ‘Things that go to the bottom of the sea don’t always stay there.’

Initially they thought the neighbour’s house was being broken into, before realising what was going on.

He was sentenced in the district court earlier this month, and ordered to pay reparation $500 each to the teenagers.

Victims Tessa Collings and Lauren Breward, both 18, said they were unhappy with the outcome.

The Terrace, which allows for up to 2000 workers, has been touted by city officials as the centrepiece of Christchurch’s proposed Retail Precinct.

A Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority spokesman said The Terrace remained a “high-profile component” of the precinct.

John Jones Steel managing director said he was glad the hiatus was over.

“We have been involved from the start and are happy to continue and proud to be a part of the rebuild,” he said.

The city council has made substantial progress improving its building control functions and is on track to gain accreditation as a building consent authority before Christmas. That’s according to initial feedback provided by assessors from International Accreditation New Zealand. “We received some positive comments from the IANZ team, who were impressed with the programme of change we’ve implemented,” city council chief executive Dr Karleen Edwards said. However, the initial findings had also con-

firmed some areas where further work needed to be done before accreditation could be granted, she said.

Sculpture stolen

A bronze sculpture of an eel curling on its base by Canterbury artist Bing Dawe was stolen from Auckland Botanic Gardens in Manurewa. Garden staff found the sculpture, which is called

Gardens manager Jack Hobbs said thieves appeared to have targeted the work. The spiralling long-fin tuna was a symbol of the species “downward spiral to extinction” because of draining of swamps for agriculture.

Mayoral hopeful chased for money

By Max Towle DEBT COLLECTORS are chasing a former Christchurch mayoral candidate.

Businessman Victor Cattermole, who was once linked with the takeover of a high-profile English football club, is being accused of not paying thousands of dollars worth of unpaid advertising costs.

Mr Cattermole finished third with 1025 votes in last year’s race behind winner Lianne Dalziel and Paul Lonsdale.

Among those pursuing Mr Cattermole are The Christchurch Star Company, Fairfax Media, and CTV. The Star has obtained Mr Cattermole’s return of electoral donations and expenses, which showed he contracted CTV for television advertising worth $1017.75, and newspaper advertising with Fairfax worth $2875.

CTV sales representative Nick Henare said Mr Cattermole had declined to pay.

CTV’s debt collector has informed the broadcaster it stands little chance of recovering the $1017.75 as the initial agreement with Mr Cattermole had been verbal.

“We took it as gospel that he would pay his bills, but that’s obviously not the case any-

In September, Mr Cattermole agreed to $8600 worth of advertising with The Star, for which he paid half up front.

He has since refused to pay the remainder, managing director Pier Smulders said.

Fairfax Media’s national credit manager Gwyneth Macdonald would not disclose the amount Mr Cattermole owed the company, but said the company was in a similar position to The Star.

She said his account was red flagged.

Mr Cattermole yesterday told The Star he disputed the claims.

He said his mayoral advertising had been agreed through a second party, who he understood had settled everything.

In a text message to The Star, Mr Cattermole said that person was currently in China, and he would check the situation when he returned.

Leeding Sign Design owner Darren Leeds said he had run into trouble with Mr Cattermole last year.

Mr Cattermole committed to advertising worth $834.90 with the Kainga company, including caravan branding, during his mayoral run.

“When [Cattermole] refused to pay I said I would keep his caravan on my site until he did,” said Mr Leeds.

“I never usually resort to anything like that, but thankfully he finally did pay.”

Splashdown Design owner Vicki Garland said she had no debt with Mr Cattermole over advertising worth $1742.75. She said he had paid promptly and was reliable.

In 2010, the New Zealand Herald reported Mr Cattermole, a Christchurch businessman, owned at least 12 companies which had been struck off the Companies Office register. It said a company he owned had been linked by the Securities Commission to a failed tax haven company whose founder was jailed for stealing around $1.5 million.

The same year he was linked with a takeover of then English Premier League side Portsmouth Football Club (left).

The takeover did not eventuate.

Local Government Minister Paula Bennett yesterday announced plans for a Rules Reduction Taskforce, which will try to cut unnecessary bureaucracy and scrap “loopy” local and central Government regulations.

“We have rules dictating all sorts of weird and wonderful things from signage over cake stalls to where your shower curtains need to be positioned.

“In another example, a property owner trying to replace a 130-year-old fence discovered some of it was on a scenic reserve and they faced having to buy or lease the land.”

A website will be created to allow the public to submit rules that were “ripe for change”.

The taskforce, which would include tradespeople and building experts, would consider whether the rules could be eliminated.

Mrs Bennett said it was only a six-person board, and was not adding bureaucracy to reduce bureaucracy.

By Max Towle A CALL is being made to change how new Christchurch streets are named.

The Hagley-Ferrymead Community Board was tasked with choosing a name for a new 18 lot subdivision in Woolston last week.

Several board members took issue with having to pick from the three options provided by city council staff – St Abel Pl, St Ariadne Pl and St Adela Pl. “Why should we have to name the street after a saint that died over 1000 years ago in a different country,” said Brenda Lowe-Johnson.

“We have many, many talented and worthwhile people from Christchurch. I could name countless people more deserving

City council staff policy requires new street names to have the same theme as others in the area.

Ms Lowe-Johnson said she wanted the policy changed.

Fellow board member Joe Davies backed her call. “This is a process we should open up to the community,” he said.

With a 4-3 vote, the board plucked for St Ariadne Pl over the staff recommended St Abel Pl. The new subdivision will be built behind St Lukes St, near St Judes Lane and St Thomas Pl. Board chairwoman Sara Templeton said its members did not want to be accused of sexism.

“We thought it better to have a female saint’s name in there, rather than having four blokes,” she said.

Among them will be several dozen with ties to Christchurch and the wider Canterbury region, living out their dreams, and battling hard in pursuit of medals.

OUR GYMNASTICS team is dominated by Christchurch girls.

Anna Tempero, Brittany Robertson, Charlotte Sullivan, Courtney McGregor and Mackenzie Slee will form the artistic team, with five-time national champion Amelia Coleman taking part in the rhythmic competition. McGregor was New Zealand’s first female gymnast to make a world cup final and the first to win a medal at the prestigious Pacific Rim Championships.

Rangiora-based runner Angie Smit is hoping 2014 will continue for her where 2013 left off. Last year was a breakout year for the 22-year-old, who will be racing in the 800m. She’s been training in Europe for the last couple of months, putting up good times, as she aims to peak next week.

The only other Canterbury athlete is Tom Walsh who will be looking to beat out fellow Kiwi Jacko Gill in the men’s shot put.

Silver Fern Ellen Halpenny was part of the Villa Maria College team that won the South Island secondary schools netball championships in 2008, and a foundation member of the Canterbury Tactix in 2009. She moved north and joined the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic at the start of the 2014 season, and was rewarded with her first international selection, in the squad for this tournament.

Para-swimmer Sophie Pascoe, who broke out with a four-medal haul at the 2008 Paralympics aged just 15, will be competing in two races in Glasgow, before heading off to the Pan Pacific Para-Swimming championships in Los Angeles next month.

Canty man’s plan to RICCARTON PARK help Indian prostitutes GOLF COMPLEX

By Emma-Jane McLennan A FORMER Christchurch man is behind a campaign to get women in India out of the sex trade and into a safer working environment.

The two are raising funds to travel to Calcutta for a research trip, before launching an ethical clothing factory there and selling the apparel in New Zealand.

“We wanted to create a fair trade retail clothing scheme,” Mr Hartstonge said: “That way we can pressure companies in New Zealand to also make the change.”

“We need to really get on the ground and make contacts,” 21-year-old Mr North said.

Doors open for rising conductor A CANTERBURY University graduate and one of the world’s rising young conductors, Gemma New, heads to the United States next week to assist the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl.

New (right), who is associate conductor of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, the US equivalent to the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, will assist maestro Gustavo Dudamel and the LA Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl.

She then heads to Germany in September on a MendelssohnBartholdy Scholarship, to study with retired German conductor Kurt Masur and take up the baton in Leipzig. After the northern hemisphere summer, New has a full season ahead with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra.

Limelight magazine named New one of 30 brilliant musicians under the age of 30 and US classical music radio station WQXR has listed her as one of the top five women conductors on the rise.

New says she was just fortunate with her audition to become an associate conductor at the New Jersey orchestra at such a young age when she was in her last year of her masters at the Peabody Conservatory.

“Canterbury University was the springboard to my career. I moved to Christchurch to study violin performance with Stephen Larsen at Canterbury. He is a tremendous violin teacher and has helped and coached so many young string players in New Zealand. It was a real privilege to have

learnt from Stephen and I benefited a lot from that experience.

“I did a Bachelor of Music (honours) at Canterbury. The School of Music had a supportive, close-knit group of music students while I was there and it was a fantastic atmosphere in which to study music. The campus was beautiful and I really enjoyed playing in their string quartet.

I also studied a double degree in mathematics and found that Canterbury University was really flexible and versatile in letting me study at both departments.

“The university has a great community and I would encourage year 12 and 13 students considering studying at Canterbury to get involved and to get to know the other students. They could well become friends for life.’’

New has received awards from the Dame Malvina Major Foundation, the New Zealand Federation of Graduate Women, the Kia Ora Foundation, the Peabody Institute, AMP, the Freemasons Society and the Adastra Foundation.

Canterbury University School of Music head Dr Glenda Keam says New is an impressive graduate and musician.

“Whether that be conducting, playing, working with composers, or building a music community, she thrives on what musical experiences bring her and what it means for her connections with others,’’ Dr Keam says.

A YEAR on from the relaunch of Kiwi brand Georgie Pie, and with more than three million pies sold over that time, McDonald’s says it is preparing to launch a number of new Georgie Pie flavours to the market – including into Christchurch.

McDonald’s New Zealand managing director Patrick Wilson said the move to relaunch Georgie Pie through McDonald’s last year had been carefully considered, but he felt it was paying off.

Wilson said he was confident of the long-term future of the Georgie Pie brand, with McDonald’s launching new flavours and investing in further development and marketing.

“We took a prudent approach in bringing Georgie

Pie back, both in terms of research and development, and talking with New Zealanders,” Wilson told The New Zealand Herald.

“The brand evokes high emotions and it was important to go about things in the right way. It was a calculated risk, but one which we planned very carefully, and I’m pleased New Zealanders are enjoying the return of the iconic brand.”

Wilson said the company had been collecting customer feedback through social media about which pie flavours to bring back next.

McDonald’s will be trialling an apple and blackberry sweet pie from this week, until they run out. The trial would consist of 30,000 pies available in McDonald’s in

Wilson said the Georgie Pie brand had seen limited and regionally-focussed marketing since launch, but there would be much broader marketing in coming months.

He said the brand had “its own personality”, something he said would come through a lot more in future campaigns.

Cycleway route opposed by school The first of the $68 million city council major cycleway routes could be delayed due to conflict over a Riccarton road.

Work is due to begin this summer on the uni-cycle route, which would run from Canterbury University to the central city.

Christchurch Girls’ High School has opposed the route, because it would restrict their plans to expand on Matai St. The school board has asked for a six to eight week delay on the decision, to allow the school to release its long-term master plan.

A city council staff member who spoke at the community board meeting said that the school could raise objections with the city council, but that would have to be done in a separate process.

Board of trustees chairman Mike Lay said that it could be expensive for both the school and the city council if the plans had to be changed in the future.

He said that he did not want to interfere with the cycleway development, which he said would be a great thing for the school.

Halswell residents are afraid that someone could be injured or killed because pedestrian crossings have not been installed on busy roads in the area.

They are concerned that children and older people could be hit while crossing Halswell Rd and other roads around the Halswell Shopping Centre.

The roads run between Halswell School, Halswell Library, several retirement housing areas and the shopping centre.

Residents approached the Riccarton-Wigram Community Board with their concerns last week.

The board agreed that pedestrian crossings were urgently needed in the area, but disagreed over how they should be provided.

Board member Helen Broughton said that the city council needed to create a plan for controlling traffic, because the area was still growing.

Teens caught in high-speed joyride

BY MAX TOWLE Cashmere thrill seekers are taking joy-riding to a new extreme.

Teenagers have been caught riding children’s tricycles at high speeds down Hackthorne Rd at night without brakes or lights.

It follows a police crackdown on longboarders and skateboarders zooming down Major Aitken Drive in Huntsbury last year.

Community Constable Peter Waldron said he had not yet received any complaints over the trike riders.

“But this is obviously a danger to their safety and drivers’ safety and just not good common sense, even if it doesn’t yet seem to be a common problem,” he said.

The group of trike riders were caught going more than 50 km/h

by a member of the Christchurch South Patrol recently.

Community Constable Waldron said police had dealt with several complaints over skateboarders and longboarders going down Major Aitken Drive at high speeds last year.

He encouraged anyone who had seen the trike riders or had a close shave to phone the Christchurch South Police Station on 363 2500.

French Evening and Bastille Day Celebration at Rosebank Estate Winery

osebank Estate Winery became a little piece of France on July 12 when l’Alliance Française de Christchurch hosted a celebration of Bastille Day. The event, which is correctly called La fête nationale, in France, commemorates the day in 1789, July 14, when a citizen force stormed the Bastille fortress in Paris, sparking the French Revolution. Guests at Rosebank were turned out in appropriate French costume to dine on gourmet Gallic cuisine, while being serenaded by Les Trois Cloches. Following dinner and dancing, there was a lively rendition of La Marseillaise.

Kiwi kids like sport

Sport is an ideal vehicle for reaching a large number of our students. The Sport NZ Young People’s Survey (2011) indicates that most NZ kids like playing sport.

This project aims to develop, trial and evaluate approaches to deliver improved outcomes which will then be made available to all schools.

So, in our third year of the project, Hillmorton High School is offering a specialist class at Year 9 (SIE).

Opportunities for students

The SIE class will enable students with an interest in sport and physical activity to learn across the curriculum.

There will be five teachers consciously working and constructing a curriculum together to go across the five essential learning areas of Health & Physical Education, Science, Social Studies, English and Mathematics, using sport and physical activity as a context. Throughout the year sporting themes will be used across the five subjects.

Contexts trialled in 2013 and 2014 have been – data collection in gymnastics and then used to interpret in Maths with graphs, “Cool Runnings” as film study, “Playing to Win” and “Speed Freak” as a novel study, “world Champion Team’ as a theme across the five Essential Learning areas.

The students will have the opportunities to be role models and portray exemplary behaviour and academic performance. There will be leadership opportunities to develop their skills in coaching and umpiring.

• Paint colour mismatches now • Check for damage not previously recorded by EQC showing up?

• Have the repairs left scars such as earthquake cracks in stucco that was plastered over and painted leaving a scar that was not there before?

Even though EQC will tell you that you only have 90 days to complain about the quality of the work, the fact is EQC are liable to ensure all earthquake damage is repaired and the repairs are completed correctly to industry standard.

It is not too late to have these issues addressed.

Quality assessment of the damage is crucial to proper repairs being carried out. EQC have admitted openly that many of their assessments have not been to an acceptable standard.

For EQC to consider failed repairs or missed damage you must present them with the evidence.

• Check for Asbestos No one knows your home better than you, point out to the builder or assessor what you know to be wrong.

Asbestos Please insist that damaged walls and ceilings you suspect may have asbestos are tested by accredited companies. I was very surprised to learn that the exterior stucco cladding of my own home contains asbestos. It turned out even though my home was built preasbestos, the stucco cladding was put over the original weatherboard back in the 1960’s or 70’s and it contains high levels of asbestos. So if you have stucco cladding that is damaged please insist on getting it tested professionally.

Ask a properly qualified builder or damage assessor to report on the quality of the repairs that had been carried out and to look for missed earthquake damage.

Have them prepare a report, photograph the issues and cost the repair to get it fixed properly.

Schools rugby league heads into finals IT’S FINALS time in the inaugural edition of The Star Cup secondary schools rugby league competition, Teams consisting of year 9 and 10 students from four schools – Aranui High School, Hillmorton High School, Hornby High School and St Thomas of Canterbury College – were joined by an under-14 side from the Northern Bulldogs club for the round robin, which was played last term.

Canterbury Rugby League development officer Dave McMeeken said he believes the competition has been a huge success.

“Here in Canterbury we are investing a lot of time and effort into primary and secondary school sport. The junior high school competition has been a great way to work with the schools and has enabled us to promote local league clubs to the players.”

Former Kiwis coach Frank Endacott has been involved with the cup, as coach of the Northern Bulldogs side, which includes his grandson Josh Endacott.

He said it had been a good move to enter the cup, after

year older in most cases.”

As a club side, they weren’t eligible for the finals, but have still come away from the competition with plenty of memories.

“The players really enjoyed the experience of playing under lights,” said Endacott.

Golden Oldies THE 20TH edition of the Commonwealth Games begins tomorrow night in Glasgow but 40 years ago, the 10th edition was hosted right here in Christchurch.

In a souvenir special published by The Star at the end of the games, Jack McClenaghan wrote: “For ten exciting days, the Games were the thing.”

Describing the scene during the opening ceremony, he wrote: “The beat of the commercial heart of Christchurch faltered that afternoon, and its streets were near deserted.

Some shops which remained open, generously made their colour television sets available to the public who stood, squatted or sprawled on pavement or carpet to watch. From then on the Games had the city in their grip.”

New Zealand won nine gold, eight silver, and 18 bronze medals – at the time our second best performance ever.

Coach up for challenge

HAVING WON just seven of their last 65 games, it was clear the Canterbury Tactix needed to do something big this off-season.

Bringing Australian Sue Hawkins on board as their new head coach might just be the trick.

Whereas some would have been put off by the franchise’s poor record, Hawkins is excited.

“It’s a huge opportunity to work with some young talent in the sport,” she said.

The Tactix should be feeling the same way about her – she will bring a wealth of experience to the beleaguered franchise, where she has signed a two-year contract, and is expected to arrive in mid-October.

It’s the most recent move in a career that has seen her spend time in all of the major netballing countries.

Currently with the New South Wales Institute of Sport, she was coach of England from 2007 and 2011, and has had plenty of other roles in Australia and New Zealand.

She said never staying in one place for long helped her keep young.

Making the Tactix competitive will certainly be a challenge, but one she’s ready for.

Coach education is a big passion of Hawkins’, and she’s looking forward to working with local up-and-comers.
