Gymnast sets sights on Games success

PETS BATTLING CANCER A difficult subject and one where there are no guarantees of a successful outcome but I believe that pets deserve a chance at surviving cancer. It obviously depends on the patient and their overall health and the heavy commitment the client is willing to make in terms of time, vet visits and costs involved in treatment.

I have personally been involved in treating cancer in my first dog, Toby, so I really know how tough and sad it can be living day in and day out with your best friend who is going through cancer treatment. From the time of diagnosis, I got 6 months longer with my best mate and that was so worth it for me. Toby was happy and seemingly well right up until the end, coming to work, exercising and interacting with other dogs as normal.

We seem to be so much better at diagnosing cancers now. Pet owners are more in tune with their loyal companions and they intuitively know when things are not right – slightly off food, a bulging belly, more lethargic, less keen to jump into the car and our clients seem expert at finding the smallest of lumps. We have a brilliant team of vets who are very proficient in diagnostics and they really strive to get answers. At the end of the day we really care and value the pets we see and treat. Most lumps will be aspirated and we can immediately check out the cells under the microscope. If in doubt we send the cytology to another laboratory for expert opinion. We routinely blood and urine test patients that are not quite right and we can have results in 30 minutes thanks to our onsite blood analysers. If required xrays and ultrasound examinations can be performed then and there, again with immediate results. We certainly don’t muck around.

Once we have the classification and type of cancer we can form a plan of attack in treatment. Most cancers require surgical excision then rounds of chemotherapy to keep the cancer in remission. To formulate the best chemotherapy plan for your pet, we

consult with Veterinary Oncology Specialists in Australia, who will work out the drugs we need, the amounts given and how long we need to treat for. Our pets generally cope extremely well with chemotherapy. They are resilent and stoic and want to carry on as normal for us. The drugs do have side effects which in most cases can be managed but more often than not our chemotherapy patients feel and look better than before diagnosis. They don’t typically lose their coat, go off their food or vomit profusely like people do.

Recently we had to put to sleep two very special, longstanding patients who had just come to the end of the road in cancer therapy. It is very important to realise when the time has come and often our pets are very good at conveying this to us. As veterinarians and owners, we have to really look at our patients and try to feel and see what they are trying to tell us. We need to realise when we have all done our best and when it is time to make that very hard, life changing decision.

“George”, a very dapper, immaculately presented, handsome 11 year old American Cocker Spaniel was recently put to sleep after battling aggressive hemangiosarcoma for about 7 months.

He had surgery back in December to remove the primary tumour which was in his spleen and then he underwent a few rounds of chemotherapy. George was a fantastic, courageous patient to treat and I know we gave him more precious, quality time with his doting owners.

“Brandy”, a beautiful, kind 12 year old chocolate Labrador who was everyone’s friend, was also put to sleep recently after successfully battling stage 5 lymphoma for 2.5 years. She coped fantastically with all the needles, intravenous drips and drugs and you would never have known she had cancer. She actually looked forward to her visits as it meant Steve gave her liver treats which for Steve is a rare event.

Both these patients will be sorely missed by us all at McMaster & Heap Vets and we want to thank the families involved in allowing us the chance to extend their time with these awesome dogs, hopefully with dignity, compassion and kindness.

Cancer treatment isn’t for everyone but we think you owe your pet the chance to at least explore all the options.

Villa Maria College’s Amelia Coleman is off to compete in rhythmic gymnastics at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow next month.

Qualifying for the Commonwealth Games has been one of her proudest moments and with the competition in sight, she has had cut her school hours right down to make way for an intensive training schedule.

The 17-year-old practices up to 30 hours a week with Russian coach of two years Elena Mesheryakova.

“One of the hardest thing about competitive gymnastics is the long hours which often gets in the way of my social life,” she said.

Amelia started gymnastics when she was six and was selected by Olympia Gymnastic Sports for their pre-international squad.

At 11 she won her first title at the New Zealand championships, while at 16 she won overall gymnast of the year for the second year in a row.

As well as her national success, Amelia has been a regular at international competitions representing New Zealand.

Her sport has taken her to Russia, Canada, Australia, South Korea, United States, Latvia and the 2013 World Cup in Pesaro, Italy.

“My favorite part of what I do would have to be travelling and competing overseas. It was really cool to finally meet and watch some of my favorite top seniors compete in real life.”

The year 13 student was presented with flowers at a recent assembly and given a moving tribute by the school’s sports captain for her success.

“Villa has been really supportive of me and my gymnastic career, always setting work when I was going overseas for competitions and helping me catch up when I get back,’’ she said.

After school Amelia is tossing up between taking a gap year and heading straight into uni-

versity to study sport science or media studies.

Coincidently Amelia is not the only girl from her school going to the Commonwealth Games this July.

Courtney McGregor, 15, who left Villa Maria College this year to focus on her artistic gymnastics career, and to be home schooled, was also selected.

She is considered a top prospect to win a medal, particularly in the vault. She was New Zealand’s first female gymnast to make a World Cup final in Qatar in March and won a medal at the prestigious Pacific Rim championships, a couple of weeks later in Vancouver.

Principal of Villia Maria school Deborah Brosnahan couldn’t be prouder of the two girls and wishes them all the best for their upcoming competitions.

New village work begins soon Work on a new $80 million retirement village at the Wigram Skies development will begin in August.

The Lady Wigram Retirement Village will feature 100 villas, 54 apartments and 100 care beds including rest home, hospital and dementia facilities.

More than 100 villas and apartments will be built in the first stage of the development, which will be ready for sale in August 2015.

The village will be developed by Golden Healthcare Group, which already operates six retirement complexes in Christchurch.

Golden Healthcare Group owner John Tooby said that his aim was to provide a first-class quality facility in a desirable location.

“This is a very exciting project for us, the first time we have constructed a new retirement village from scratch. The village will be top quality in all respects and we know it will be a very desirable place for people to live,” he said.

Amenities will include a village community centre, bowling greens, a swimming pool, a spa pool, a gym, a theatre, and a hairdressing salon.

Designed by Rob Campbell of Foley Group Architecture Ltd, the new retirement village will be built

by Grace Builders on land bought

from Ngai Tahu Property.

The villas will be single storey, with two bedrooms and full garaging, while the apartments will be a combination of one and two bedrooms, with garaged car parking.

Mr Tooby said that the apartments would be “villas in the style of a hotel”.

“While this concept is relatively new to Christchurch, it is familiar in the North Island. People who don’t have a need for their own grounds, and enjoy mixing with others in communal activities and locations will find them much to their liking.”

The Spreydon-Heathcote Community Board has requested a report from city council staff on putting a 40km/h speed limit outside West Spreydon School.

Board chairman Paul McMahon said he was optimistic the board’s bid will be successful. West Spreydon is one of the few schools in the city without speed limit changes during during school hours.

Strengthening work on the amenity block at Denton Park began last week in order to raise it to 67 per cent of the New Building Standard. The work was put forward under urgency in an attempt to have it finished before rugby season began. Funding of $130,000 was allocated to the project from the city council Building and Infrastructure Allowance. Demolition and rebuild of the block was considered, but would cost about $1.3 million and involve removing parts of the grandstand.

I’m 16 and so are the rest of the band members. We formed in intermediate, we all went to the same school but now half of us go to St Andrew’s and half go to Christchurch Boys’ High School. We’ve been competing at rockquest for four years in a row and have one more to go next year.

How did it feel winning the Canterbury Regional Smokefree Rockquest 2014 with your band The Haze?

It was amazing; we’ve been doing it for four years so we were really glad to win it this year.

Last year we got second and the year before that I won the APRA Lyric award, but it was great to finally win the ultimate title. We were a bit nervous because Zac our newest member had only played seven gigs with us before and the rest of us had played

young rockers Have you made your video submission to enter the SmokeFree Rockquest nationals yet?

No, we’re making it this Sunday afternoon at the St Andrew’s theatre. We sent a video submission in last year as well but out of 50 submissions we got into the top 30 but unfortunately we didn’t get any further than that. Fingers crossed for this year!

Do you think you will get in this time?

Yea hopefully, that would be awesome. I think we have a better shot at getting it this year than last year.

What will you do if you win nationals?

It’s a long shot but if we did win that would be absolute ecstasy!

Have you experienced any fame amongst your friends or school mates?

Yea a little bit. We play a lot of live gigs like we played at the Pallet Pavilion, the A&P show and the lantern festival and we’re starting to get a little bit of a following which is cool, yea we’re definitely starting to get more recognised.

Who are some of your role models?

We love Led Zeppelin and we’re big fans of Guns ’N Roses, but we like a whole mix of styles. Our band is quite a mixture as well, like our drummer

is into metal, our bass player is into jazz and I’m into rock so that all influences our playing style and the songs we produce.

Who came up with your band name The Haze?

Well I’m not actually sure, we just kind of made it up a couple of years ago and it stuck.

How many of the songs you play at gigs are covers v originals?

We have about seven originals now but we started out just doing covers; a lot of rock songs our parents liked.

What do your parents think of your success?

They enjoy it, they really drove the band when we were 12 and just starting out.

Where do you practise?

We play at my place; luckily we have a set of electronic drums hooked up to head phones so it’s not too loud for the rest of the family.

How did you get into music in the first place?

I picked up singing when I was quite young because our family is quite musical. We have this wee traditional family guitar, that’s been handed down from generation to generation and we all kind of have a go on it. It’s a great little guitar. That’s what I started playing and taking guitar lessons on, and it just took off from there.

Where do you hope the band

will take you in the future?

Well at the moment it’s pretty tough while we are at school because we are really busy like the only times we get to practise now are Tuesdays and Sundays.

But I hope we can carry it on in the future, I’d love to keep playing gigs and getting our name out there more and hopefully one day get some national success.

Do you consider yourself a bit of a rock star?

Uh a little bit haha, yea I would like to think that.

Who has the biggest ego in your band?

I do. Yup, it’s definitely me.

I am the ‘bossy angry’ one but hey, look where it got us.

What’s the worst part of becoming a rock star?

The rest of our music class gives us a lot of flak for it.

Do you get more interest from the girls now?

Haha a little bit but not really.

If not a musician, then what do you want to do when you grow up?

Probably something to do with science and chemistry.

Maybe become a chemical engineer.

What university do you want to go to?

Wellington or Auckland because Christchurch doesn’t really have that good of a music scene at the moment.

When Huda Abdulridha immigrated from Iraq four years ago, she did not speak a word of English.

Last week, the 12-year-old Wharenui School pupil won the year 8 Riccarton Rotary Speech Competition, beating students from nine other schools.

Speaking eloquently and with confidence, Huda presented her speech on the effects of smoking at Villa Maria College on Wednesday.

She said that making a speech in a second language was difficult, but was not what scared her most about the competition.

“Sometimes I get very nervous because I feel people will judge me for wearing a scarf.

I didn’t need to be, because they were really encouraging.”

She worked for two hours at the library every day for two weeks to research and write her speech, and for several weeks to memorise and present it.

Huda said that she was inspired by her father, who died in 2007, just three years before the family moved from Iraq to New Zealand.

“My father was a really good presenter. He dreamed of being an engineer, but he passed away before he could realise his dream.”

Huda said that her experiences in Iraq also inspired her speech.

“I chose my topic because a lot of my family in Iraq smoked, so I wanted to make a difference.”

She said that communication with her family still in Iraq was almost impossible, so they had no idea if many of their family members were safe and she could not share news of her success with them.

ELOQUENT: Wharenui School pupil Huda Abdulridha won the year 8 Riccarton Rotary Speech Competition last week with a speech on the effects of smoking.

As a reward for her achievement, Huda was promised the chance to accompany her mother when they went back to Iraq to visit family in about five years.

She said that her mother wanted her to become a doctor, but her dream was to be an engineer.

“I think it is very important to be a good presenter no matter what I choose, because it is a skill that is needed for all jobs.”

She said that she would continue to work on her public speaking when she starts high school next year.

Villa Maria College’s Vivace choir and Collegium, a combined choir from Christ’s College and St Margaret’s College have been selected to compete in The Big Sing National Finale held at the Auckland Town Hall from August 21 to 23.

The two choirs were the only two from Christchurch selected for the event alongside 22 other high school choirs from around the country.

Villa Maria College development officer Judi Wilson said there was excitement in the air after the girls were named the best girls’ choir in the regional final held on June 5 and 6 and they were pleased to be selected for the prestigious event.

“Burnside [High School] normally pip us in the final, but they haven’t made the final this year. All the girls are quite excited,” she said.

She attributed the success of the group to choral director Ravil Atlas, an internation-

ally-recognised leading opera tenor and vocal teacher.

Mr Atlas said it was “very special” to be selected for the national finale and it was particularly satisfying this year as we are trying out a new programme of choirs at Villa Maria.

“Vivace is the new advanced choir. It is designed to be small and to emphasise advanced music and vocal techniques and to foster a sense of leadership in the girls. Each one, in addition to Vivace, is required to take on student leadership with one of the other choirs.”

Mr Atlas said making the finale was a success within itself as there were many deserving choirs who did not make it.

“It is always very special to be selected to the national finale. The atmosphere there is electric and to see the choirs support each other and to perform so well is what the choral singing is all about.”

Rugby looking to expand

BY PAUL MCDONALD Halswell has always been a rugby league stronghold, but rugby union appears to be growing within the Hornet’s nest.

With two junior teams competing in under seven and eight competitions, a home base at Te Kuni Park in Wigram and a jersey design, the future of the sport in the area has shown growth.

Halswell/Wigram Rugby chair Craig Sullivan and Canterbury Rugby Football Union community rugby general manager Tim Gilkison tabled a proposal to the Riccarton/ Wigram Community Board last December about rugby in the area.

They highlighted previous unsuccessful attempts to provide club rugby in Halswell and proposed the council set aside Te Kuni Park and the reserve at the new Knights Stream subdivision for this purpose.

Sullivan said their two junior sides played on two fields at Te Kuni Park and one at Westlake Park and the club’s growth looked strong and they hoped to add four more junior

teams next year.

The club will run a promotional campaign at the end of this year to bring more junior players on board. “[We are] pretty happy with the way things are going and we are hoping to get more players involved next year.”

“It will just be up to under 12s, we are not in a position to pick up older players just yet.”

The club had received a lot of support from the CRFU and a public meeting held earlier this year attracted more than 50 attendees.

Sullivan said he was aware of the strong following rugby league and football had in the area, but insisted rugby within the area was a separate organisation and would encroach on the territory of other sports at Halswell Domain.

“We don’t want to cross swords with anyone, it’s about providing another sport by bringing rugby union into the area.”

He said as they area grew, there was a chance they would combine with another area to create a larger club.

Hubbard said the CRFU had highlighted the club as a new addition to the metropolitan competition because of the area’s development and growth of population.

“We wanted to join in the metro competition. A lot of the kids used to go out and play for clubs like Prebbleton, Waihora and Lincoln in the rural competition because there was no rugby in Halswell, but hopefully when they see we have a club here they will come back in.”

He said the results for his side so far this year had not gone their way, but they recently celebrated their first win over Belfast.

“They [parents from Belfast] didn’t even know we had a club so they were like ‘good on ya’.”

Gilkison said big development was well under way for rugby union in Halswell/Wigram.

Gilkison said growth in the sport was viable and sustainable as more people moved into the area.

“We should see some good numbers registering next season.”

TRAVEL Enjoy an underwater experience with these creatures, writes Peter de Graaf IT MEASURES almost 5m from fin tip to fin tip, with a cavernous, funnel-like mouth gaping more than a metre wide.

It weighs as much as a small truck but skims through the water with barely a flick of its bat-like wings.

It looks like a science fiction creation — imagine a stingray crossed with the Starship Enterprise — with a pair of horns at the corners of its immense head and enigmatic black-and-white markings across its belly.

It has 300 rows of teeth and a habit of launching itself out of the water while furiously flapping its wings.

The manta ray might sound terrifying but it is in fact a gentle giant.

Although related to the stingray it has no barb and its pinhead-sized teeth are only ever used during the rough-and-tumble of manta ray sex. And the biggest things it eats are zooplankton, critters too small to be seen without a microscope.

Even better, these huge creatures are unfazed by humans, which can make for some extraordinary underwater experiences.

It has 300 rows of teeth and a habit of launching itself out of the water while furiously flapping its wings.

The manta ray might sound terrifying but it is in fact a gentle giant.

Although related to the stingray it has no barb and its pinhead-sized teeth are only ever used during the rough-and-tumble of manta ray sex. And the biggest things it eats are zooplankton, critters too small to be seen without a microscope.

Even better, these huge creatures are unfazed by humans, which can make for some extraordinary underwater experiences.

Oceanic manta rays, which grow up to 7m across, occasionally surprise divers at Northland’s Poor Knights Islands, but only the slightly smaller reef manta ray can easily be spotted by snorkellers in Fiji any time between May and October.

Marine biologist Dan Bowling, who is based at Barefoot Island Resort, is in awe of these littleunderstood creatures.

“As a species we know just about nothing about them,” he says.

What is known is that 42 different manta rays, identified by the markings on

their bellies, frequent the channel between Naviti and Drawaqa islands. They’re known to be reasonably smart — roughly on the level of a 3-year-old child — and live for up to 20 years.

Manta rays have three reasons for visiting the channel, Bowling says.

The first is to feed, swimming against the current with funnel-like

mouths open and filtering plankton from the water.

Their horns are actually rolled-up fins called cephalic fin-lobes; when unfurled they act as scoops channelling food into that gaping mouth.

The second is to scrub up.

t’s been almost two years since local fibre network provider Enable launched its first mass-market fibre broadband services in Christchurch, and local residents have been taking up this next generation of broadband services faster than anyone in the country.

When Enable launched on September 15, 2012, almost 5000 homes and businesses in Halswell could access faster, better quality broadband services delivered over fibre broadband. Today, almost 40,000 homes and thousands more businesses across Christchurch and in Rolleston and Lincoln can access Enable’s network. By mid-2015, this number will grow to about 80,000 homes and businesses.

What’s most important is almost 10 per cent of these people have already chosen to move to fibre, and in some communities such as Rolleston and Halswell, the uptake is much higher.

As Enable’s coverage has spread to more homes, Enable has discovered how hard it is to predict what sort of households will embrace and benefit from fibre broadband.

“Before we launched our residential services, there were a number of assumptions floating around about who would benefit the most from fibre at home - the likes of gamers, very high internet users and people that work from

home,” says Enable GM Marketing and Sales Malcolm Campbell.

“We learned pretty quickly that the groups that would benefit were much more diverse, and simple things like Skyping, downloading movies regularly or having a couple of teenagers online make fibre broadband a no-brainer.”

Enable has researched the interest in fibre across its community and discovered that families are most likely to benefit from making the switch early on. This comes down to the number of internet devices in a home; once you get two or three people trying to access internet at the same time, fibre’s advantages become obvious.

Alice Tan from Papanui has two teenage children at home and is a testament to this.

She says, “We have a lot of connected devices at home and many of these are downloading or connected to the internet at the same time.

Before we got fibre broadband, it was hard to do all the things we wanted online at the same time - this is no longer a problem.”

Karl and Pam Moen are Rolleston retirees who depend on the internet to catch up with family overseas, and they have noticed the benefits of fibre broadband. Mr Moen says, “The quality with Skype on fibre is lovely. Our family in England and my daughter in Australia are now so clear and they say that the picture at their end is also better.”

Curiosity drives learning at Tamariki School

rden,11, has recently developed an interest in crystals. Bismuth is a particular favourite because of its extraordinary colours and its spiral, stair-stepped shapes. Arden has been using the biological microscope at Tamariki School to inspect pieces of bismuth, pyrite and obsidian – crystals that he has bought for himself. He has learnt to control the various settings on the microscope to alter the focus, magnification and angle, so that the fine details of these crystals can be viewed. He is complementing this experience with online research and through reading reference books. Given Arden’s enthusiasm for crystals, it has been easy for him to share what he is learning with others and this has inspired other children to take a look through the microscope.

At Tamariki School, the natural curiosity of each child is valued and they are encouraged to spend their time exploring activities and learning that has particular relevance and interest to them. Given free reign, a child’s curiosity will take them on a largely enjoyable journey to absorb new information, and to develop skills and attributes such as planning, persistence, patience and problem solving. Drain the soaked beans and discard the water. Put beans in a large saucepan, add pork and bacon and cover with fresh cold water. Bring to the boil and blanch for 20 minutes, then drain and discard cooking water.

Roughly chop the celery, onion and carrot. Peel garlic cloves but leave them whole. Cut the tomatoes into wedges.

Preheat oven to 100 deg C. Heat the olive oil in a large flameproof casserole dish and sweat the vegetables for 5 minutes. Add the tomatoes and bouquet garni and cook slowly until caramelised, probably another 5-6 minutes. Add the sausage, beans, pork belly and bacon and pour in about 1.2 litres of water. Bring to the boil, then add salt and pepper, cloves of garlic and lemon juice. It is a good idea to skim off the scum as it rises to the top.

Transfer casserole to the oven and cook uncovered for 2 hours, stirring occasionally. You may need to cook a little longer—as long as the beans are soft and creamy in texture.

Remove the cassoulet from the oven and bury the duck legs in the beans and sprinkle olive oil, breadcrumbs over.

Return to the oven and cook two more hours. Serve in bowls, sprinkled with chopped parsley. Look out for those whole garlic cloves and mash them into the beans and sauce.

Serve with good quality French bread.

Lightly toast the almonds. Season with flaky salt. Remove from the pan and cool.

Heat a pot of water to blanch the beans. Add salt and sugar to the water; this helps to heighten the green colour of the beans.

When water reaches a rolling boil, add the beans. Cover with a lid and cook for 3-4 minutes.

Drain in a sink with cold running water and ice if you have it. Remove from the water when cool, and drain.

Slice the spring onions and courgettes on an angle and place in a large bowl.

Cut the apple into quarters, core and slice thinly.

Place in a separate bowl and drizzle with lemon juice and flaky sea salt.

Mix through then add to the vegetables.

Stir garlic through the mayonnaise and add to the vegetables.

With your hands, gently lift the vegetables to coat with mayonnaise.

Flexible study leads to

rewarding career change to study

ason Jones took a risk when he overhauled his career, but it has paid off with him excelling in his new career with one of Christchurch’s top surveying and engineering firms.

Jones, 32, had been working as a chef for many years, having previously completed a hospitality qualification at CPIT, but decided he wanted a career change.

He started studying a marketing diploma at CPIT in 2008, but soon cross-credited it to the new Bachelor of Applied Management when the new qualification was introduced.

Jason liked the well-rounded business knowledge the new degree offered, meaning that the degree could be applied across a number of industries.

“The degree is so flexible. That’s one of the best things about it. I have changed my major from Sales and Marketing to Project Management with ease when I changed jobs.”

Jones started at Eliot Sinclair, a survey, engineering and planning consultancy, continuing to study part-time.

“I started as a surveying assistant, which was pretty much at the bottom. However, as I have learnt more through my study, I’ve been able to apply it to my work and take on a new role with more responsibility,” he says.

“I have found the degree useful because it was all really practical knowledge.

Everything I’ve learnt has helped me directly in my job.”

Due to the proven results they can see, Eliot Sinclair have been very supportive of his training, Jones says.

“It’s been great because I have been able to fit it in around my work. CPIT is really flexible with their hours; they have night classes and summer schools as well. You have a lot of options if this is something you’re interested in.”

lisha Rollinson had only just left school when she decided to take her dream career further and look into study options for early childhood.

“I had attended a food safety course that my workplace had put me through which was held at the Aoraki Polytechnic and I loved the environment,” says Alisha.

“I found a course that took my interest that had a mid-year start. I enrolled and completed the Certificate in Parenting and Care of Children and then went on to further my studies by enrolling in the Certificate in Early Childhood Studies.”

Alisha says her studies were so relevant to the early childhood industry, covering everything from having the ability to communicate effectively with children, having

knowledge and skills in an early childhood sector, understanding children’s basic needs, understanding their behaviours and having an understanding of the early childhood curriculum - Te Whariki.

“I love that we go out on placement - getting experience in an early childhood centre and learning from that environment. We have fun while learning and the polytechnic is an awesome environment to learn in.”

Shirley Boys’ education is exciting, fulfilling and broad. Both present-day and prospective students will be involved in a new and unique era in the school’s history as it looks to be rebuilt on a new site next to Avonside Girls’ High School.

Shirley Boys’ challenges young men to strive for personal growth through a rigorous and creative curriculum and an extensive co-curricular program.

The findings of a recent NZCER (New Zealand Council for Educational Research) report, which analysed achievement in state secondary boys’ schools and explored the strategies used by top performing schools, clearly compliments Shirleys’ holistic approach.

Analysis between 2010 and 2012 showed school leavers from state boys’ schools had higher qualifications than their male counterparts from state coeducational schools.

or five senior students from Marian College, the opportunity to be part of an exchange trip to Japan was “the trip of a lifetime”. The students, together with Principal Ms Anna Heffernan and Head of Languages at Marian Mrs Sarah Lake, travelled to Japan recently as part of the two-yearly Five Schools Exchange that includes schools from New Zealand, Australia and China and were hosted this time by Toho Senior High School in Nagoya.

For the Marian students, the two-week trip was “an amazing experience”, with many highlights including a ceremonial welcome, visiting a Shinto shrine and a Buddhist temple, a three-day stay in the alps, dressing in a kimono and trying kendo and karate.

Year 11 student Petra McGurk was the third member of her family to take part in the exchange that was started in the 1990s, and says, “It was fantastic to spend time with people, talking with them and getting to know their stories. We were immersed in the Japanese culture and had the chance to make so many friendships as well.”

Another emphasis of the exchange was on World Heritage sites. Marian students presented on the application for Tekapo Dark Sky Reserve to be one, the impacts on it and how it can be sustained in the future.

“The trip made us realise that although the students were from different countries, we can work together to protect our most important places,” says Petra.
