Quake heroes get bravery awards BY MAX TOWLE Tony Tamakehu didn’t think, he just acted. The Huntsbury construction company owner was working near the Pyne Gould Corporation building when the February 2011 earthquake struck. The father of two and his co-workers moved cranes and other equipment to the devastated site in a desperate bid to help. They then crawled through cramp holes through the pancaked floors
of the building searching for survivors. Mr Tamakehu was able to find and help rescue several people during the team’s search in the darkness. “We just wanted to help as many people as possible,” he told the Southern View. He continued to help in the weeks after the quake, often recovering bodies from the flattened building. “We were lucky we were in a position to do that because we know how buildings are put together.” Mr Tamakehu has been honoured
with the New Zealand Bravery Medal for his actions three and a half years ago. “I received the letter telling me I had won it a couple of weeks ago and I was a bit humbled by it to be honest – I was reluctant to accept it as I didn’t think I did more than those around me,” he said. “But a lot of Maori youth don’t have many role models these days so that influenced me to accept it.” He said his family were “stoked” for him when they found out. Also honoured with bravery med-
als this year were firefighters Kevin Crozier and Josh Kumbaroff. Woolston senior firefighter Kevin Crozier was one of a group that took turns tunnelling into the collapsed CTV building on February 22. He was unable to use breathing equipment or wear a helmet because of the cramped conditions, but he and his team eventually discovered and rescued a group of three students. The team’s efforts were carried out through dense smoke and the constant threat of aftershocks. • Turn to page 2
