Hospital car park problem to get worse

HEALTH OFFICIALS are urgently trying to solve a looming parking crisis at Christchurch Hospital.

When construction begins on a $400 million to $450 million upgrade of the hospital later this year, all of its current 130 on-site parking spots will be out of action.

THE MIRACULOUS recovery of apprentice jockey Ashley Frye continues to soar.

The 19-year-old has bounced back from a near fatal riding accident in March and was yesterday given the all-clear to fly.

Frye suffered life threatening injuries when her mount Zuleika ruptured an artery at the Ashburton races on March 14, bringing the pair crashing to the ground.

Now, after nearly two months at home, she is planning “a little holiday” to the North Island in the next month to watch her partner, 22-year-old fellow jockey Matthew Cropp race.

Frye has been home since the last week of April and is working two hours a day helping in father Danny Frye’s Amberley stables.

While it was “better than doing nothing” she said she was now ready to get back into the saddle.

“In October I have to go for another medical for both driving and riding,” she said.

“Being with horses is good but it’s just not the same, I love them but I love being on their back

A GROUP of English police officers who pulled over a speeding car were confronted by a newborn baby instead of a criminal after a man helped deliver his granddaughter at the side of the road.

Lola Mia Rose was born just as seven officers in four unmarked cars, who had chased her grandfather Colin Ellmore along the M275 in Portsmouth, surrounded the car.

Her mother Tiffany, who has three other children, described the experience as “quite scary’’ and said she was “very proud’’ of her dad for delivering baby Lola.

After suffering some niggling pains throughout the day the 26-year-old, said she realised at around 9.55pm that she needed to get to the hospital.

Lola, who weighed 6lb 4oz, and her mother were transferred to the hospital by ambulance soon after.

In spite of her dramatic entrance into the world, Ms Ellmore said her fourth child is doing well.

Frye said a return to race riding could be on the cards too, but not until another medical exam in March next year.

“I want to come back to race riding, it’s just how my balance is and whether I’ve changed, if I find it hard I might have to hold off for a

few years, I do want to come back to it, it’s just a matter of time.”

Frye said most of her long recovery had been a blur until her last two weeks at the Laura Fergusson Trust rehabilitation centre.

“I’ve got visions of some parts of it, but it seems like it was a dream,” she said.

“When I first started getting my memory back I couldn’t understand where I was. The whole experience, it’s like I’ve been reborn again, I had to learn to redo everything again.”

Her trip to the North Island would give her a chance to say thank you to racing friends who had supported her.

“The amount of cards I got was amazing,” she said.

“We are in a competitive industry but as soon as something happens everyone just comes together to help you.”

Insurance payout hope

By Fiona Thomas PROGRESS ON the city council’s long running insurance woes maybe known by this weekend.

City councillors and city council staff have been meeting with its insurer Civic Assurance and international reinsurers in confidential discussions this week.

It involves the $1 billion earthquake insurance claim, councillor Raf Manji confirmed yesterday. A total of $356 million has already been paid, but there have been

ongoing arbitration between Civic and the reinsurers over the balance.

Cr Manji said Civic Assurance was involved in the discussions but it was the reinsurers that would make any decisions.

He was hopeful that might be made by this weekend.

If an agreement wasn’t reached it would be “back to the drawing board,” he said.

Mayor Lianne Dalziel’s office initially refused to discuss the

meeting but when pressed by The Star over what was happening, issued a statement.

“The council is conducting what are hoped to be constructive discussions in an endeavour to progress outstanding insurance issues,” she said.

A spokesman for Gerry Brownlee said the Earthquake Recovery Minister was aware of the talks but was not involved and did not know when a settlement was hoped to be reached.

Spectator goes belly-up after burger at rugby

By Emma-Jane McLennan AMI STADIUM’S boss has apologised after a spectator fell ill from an undercooked chicken burger at the Crusaders England match on Tuesday night.

Darren Burden, general manager of Vbase which operates AMI phoned Woody James yesterday to say sorry for what happened.

Mr James said chicken in his burger was raw.

“I took a bite out of my burger and it tasted jellyish and not right, so I spat it out,” he said.

“There it was, raw [chicken]. It even had blood in it,” he said.

Mr James, his father, brother and a friend all bought burgers at the match.

His father ate his, but the others all took them back to the food outlet after finding theirs were undercooked.

The food outlet manager refunded their money but demanded the burgers back.

Mr James wanted to photograph them.

“She tried to snatch the burgers off me, and I said ‘let go, I just want to take another picture,” he said.

“But she grabbed them and we

Vigilante threat after suspicious fire damages boxing club

POLICE ARE warning against vigilante tactics after a suburban boxing gym was set alight.

Angry people in Aranui have threatened to take the law into their own hands after the Wainoni Activity Centre was damaged by a fire at the weekend.

The centre is used by A-Town Boxing Gym. Head coach Jamie Roberts (above), said it was suspected that a group of “young lads” seen on the site by people in the community had started the fire.

Aranui locals wanted to take the law into their own hands and mete out community justice, he said.

Some of the youths were locals.

A post on the boxing gym Facebook page calls for information on the people responsible for the fire, in order to “sort some good old community justice that will make them never do it again”.

Mr Roberts said thousands of dollars worth of uninsured equipment was ruined by fire or smoke damage, with the boxing ring and weights rooms the worst-affected.

But Detective Sergeant Ashley Ross said police would not tolerate vigilante action.

If criminal offences were committed in the name of community justice, the people involved would be investigated and charged, he said.

Mr Roberts said he personally would not get involved in any vigilante action.

“I certainly can’t dish out that sort of thing but I quietly support it. I understand it’s not legal, but what are you going to do, ask these kids to stop lighting fires?”

Mr Roberts said if the person responsible for the fire was to speak to him, he would not take it any further.

“If the kid was to front up and come in and say mate it was me, we’ve got to respect that, and I certainly won’t hurt him. That’s what the gym is about, owning your mistakes.

“Stop blaming people, boys, front up, own it, lesson learnt. I bet the last few days you’ve been s****ing your pants.

“Maybe it will make them stop and think.”

Aranui Community Trust manager Rachael Fonotia said that the community was upset about the vandalism of a local facility, but she had not heard any discussion about who might have been responsible or any action against them.

“We don’t condone vigilante action, because there is a proper process to go through with the police to make sure that justice is done.”

She believed that the fire was an isolated incident.

“I think it’s just people being idiots, who don’t care about the facilities and the places that they live. They’re destroying facilities in their own community, and that’s simply stupid.”

Brownlee wants port recovery plan GERRY BROWNLEE wants to fast-track the rebuild of Lyttelton’s quake-damaged port.

The Earthquake Recovery Minister yesterday announced he had asked Environment Canterbury and Lyttelton Port Company to prepare a Lyttelton Port Recovery Plan.

“Lyttelton Port needs certainty about repairing, rebuilding and reconfiguring its operations, and this plan will deliver that,” said Mr Brownlee.

“The plan will provide very clear guidance about how the port can be repaired and rebuilt in a manner that works best for the Lyttelton area.”

It is expected the draft recovery plan will be provided in July 2015.

The move uses the powers of the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Act 2011.

The plan will aim to ensure safe, efficient and effective operations, while taking account of the impact on the coastal marine area and the community, any implications on transport and the needs of users of the port and its surrounding areas.

Mr Brownlee said developing the plan would be a similar process to the Christchurch Central Recovery Plan and the Land Use Recovery Plan.

After Lyttelton Port Company undertake consultation, ECan will then develop a preliminary draft, call for written comment and hold a hearing.

Ms Gordon said officials were discussing the possibility of increasing the number of volunteers available to help people arriving at the hospital in the mean time.

Older Generations Forum spokesman John Patterson said the hospital needed to be easily accessible.

“The hospital has to have some way to help people – especially those who are older and more fragile and feeble,” he said.

“But I guess we’ll have to learn to live with it as it’s got to be done.”

Age Concern chief executive Simon Templeton said parking at the hospital “has always been a bit of a nightmare for staff and visitors.”

“It’s something they need to take seriously for older people and those visiting loved ones,” he said.

CDHB board member Sally Buck told The Star the board would do “everything it can to make sure temporary measures are put in place.”

In April, The Star reporters investigated severe parking shortages at the hospital.

Reporters found mothers walking young children long distances to reach the hospital, patients doing continuous laps of the car park trying to find a spot, and more than one case of illegal parking.

POLICE RESOURCES are being stretched by late-night boozing across the city.

Trendy CBD spots like the Mashina Lounge, Carlton and The Bog have opened in the past year, drawing patrons away from suburban areas.

Alcohol prevention leader Senior Sergeant Gordon Spite said police were having to be more “tactical” in responding to outbreaks of trouble in Christchurch.

“If there are issues in the suburbs, we have to balance that against those busy areas in town,” he told The Star.

“If we’re having to go from one side of town to the other, through all the roadworks, it can be tricky.”

“We may decide to be in a particular area at a particular time, but the best-laid plans sometimes fall apart because we get tied up with one incident.”

Trade in Addington, Riccarton and Merivale boomed following the earthquakes, drawing in punters who usually drank in the CBD. However, more alcohol-fuelled incidents followed.

“After the earthquakes we had to go from two security guards on the door to a group of eight,” said Aikmans bar manager Matt Maynard.

“People were trying to jump fences to get in, the lines were huge – it was carnage,” he said.

With licensed premises now trickling back into the CBD, Mr Maynard said Aikmans was less crowded.

He said the bar had reverted to one security guard who roamed the bar rather than staying on the door.

Hospitality NZ Canterbury president Peter Morrison said Victoria St was swiftly becoming the busiest area.

In March, Hospitality NZ asked the city council for $62,400 a year to fund extra security staff for premises on the street.

Senior Sergeant Spite said Victoria St was the police’s “main focus.”

However, he said alcohol-related crime in the CBD was still down from pre-earthquake levels.

“Any advantage that you might see in [there being less crime] was wiped away by the distance between the bars,” he said.

“In the old days [pre-earthquakes], most of the bars were all close to each other in the central city so it was easier to deploy staff to walk the beat.”

“We don’t have that anymore driving past is not nearly as effective and there are all sorts of barriers created by driving past with the windows up.”

Hunter’s excuse blown out of water

Senior Sergeant Spite said police were in a “transition phase,” helping bars adapt to the new guidelines in the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012.

The act puts more of an onus on licensed premises to expel intoxicated patrons.

“We’ve made some real progress working with the industry so they can put on enjoyable nights out without hitting on some of the same alcohol-related problems we had in the past,” he said.

“It takes a while to get a grasp of that.”

In March, New Brighton’s Pierside Cafe owner Tony Brooks laid a formal complaint with police over their “heavy-handed” tactics in enforcing the act.

“Things have improved dramatically since then,” he yesterday told The Star.

“They’ve given us a number of visits and at each one they’ve been excellent. We’ve always been supportive of the laws and they’re working really well now.”

A MAN alleged to have dangerously flouted the rules for shooting black swans claimed he didn’t know, even though he had the rule book in his car.

The Riccarton man, 62, is alleged to have shot three of the swans on the water of Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere with a .22 rifle on June 7.

Under the Wildlife Act 1953, game birds can only be shot in flight and only with a shotgun of 10 gauge calibre or less.

The man was photographed walking back to his car with the gun and birds by Leeston police after a call from a member of the public. They also found he had a book on the regulations for shooting game birds in New Zealand in his car.

After speaking to the man, officers passed his details on to Fish

and Game New Zealand who have issued an infringement notice.

Fish and Game New Zealand spokesman Andrew Currie said the process would “more than likely end up with the gentleman having a day in court.”

A decision on whether to follow through with prosecution would be made by a Fish and Game compliance committee.

“It was very dangerous,” Mr Currie said. “You imagine a projectile bouncing off the water and the distance a .22 projectile can travel. The danger he put other hunters in that morning was very serious.”

Mr Currie said the man’s actions were disappointing and irresponsible, especially considering he held a firearms licence and was believed to hold a game bird hunting licence as well.

He said cyclists could be offered certain “advantages” on the road, such as access between streets unavailable to drivers.

He said good progress was being made by some city council ventures, such as a proposed bike path connecting Grassmere and Rutland Sts, but like-for-like repairs were standing in the way.

“Part of the problem we have at the moment is that the city council is only controlling a small proportion of the road work being done around the city,” Mr Turner said.

“A lot doesn’t have direct city council involvement so you are tending to get put back what was there before without thought about how minor improvements or changes could be made that might make things better for other users like cyclists.”

City council road corridor operations manager Paul Burden said the city council tried to avoid the need to make changes to roads after they had been repaired.

“SCIRT will repair “like for like” however when there are opportunities for “betterment” council gives these serious consideration,” he said.

“Council is constantly looking for opportunities to encourage cycling where ever possible.”

Who do Kiwis trust?

MAYOR LIANNE Dalziel has been ranked 72nd out of 100 in the annual New Zealand Reader’s Digest Trust survey.

The just-released 10th edition of the survey asked New Zealanders how they rated and trusted a list of Kiwi newsmakers on a scale of one to 10.

It revealed a skew towards sports stars and emergency service workers as those whom Kiwis put the most faith in.

Other Cantabrians on the list include All Blacks Richie McCaw and Dan Carter, at No 3 and No 13, and Student Volunteer Army founder Sam Johnson, No 17.

Once again Willie Apiata, VC, is the most trusted of all New Zealanders.

Mr Apiata is followed by followed by Northland doctor

and champion of Maori health care Lance O’Sullivan.

Mr Apiata also won the accolade in 2008, 2009 and 2010, making him the most trusted Kiwi since the survey’s inception.

Firefighters, paramedics, rescue volunteers and nurses were the five most trusted of 50 professions, while politicians, sex workers, door-todoor salespeople and telemarketers were at the opposite end of the list. Journalists were 43rd, between call centre workers and real estate agents.

Politicians didn’t fare well in the trustworthy people stakes either with Hone Harawira, Kim Dotcom, Michael Laws, David Cunliffe and Winston Peters at the bottom of the list.

Prime Minister John Key came in at 86th, a drop from his position at 80 last year.

Beer: What we’re drinking and Kiwis consume more than 280 million litres of beer a year.

But what are we drinking? EmmaJane McLennan reports HOLLY RAE has probably tried every type of beer for sale in Christchurch.

The 19-year-old St Albans resident used to work at the CBD Bar in Madras St, and part of the job was sampling every new brew that came through the door.

“I enjoy a German beer called Dunkel, it’s dark and creamy,” she said.

“I also enjoy an IPA (Indian pale ale) and a Three Amigos pilsner.”

When The Star interviewed Ms Rae, she was having a cold drink at Aikmans bar with a friend, Max Cunningham.

The 21-year-old windscreen technician from Bishopdale, used to work at Aikmans.

He was drinking a Monteith’s Golden Lager – his usual drink, he said.

“It’s a nice beer. I wouldn’t usually go for pilsners and the like, I stick to the main beers.”

But he also said that he enjoyed craft beer tastings – which is becoming a bit of a trend.

Kiwis are making the move from the old booze-up crates to craft beers, and it’s changing the way we drink.

Zealand Canterbury representative Peter Morrison said.

“There is a lot more interest in beers, and a lot more craft brewers around. People are more willing to try different things.”

He said that more expensive niche brews are replacing the bulkbuy of cheap beers.

A Canstar Blue survey showed that 46 per cent of Cantabrians enjoy drinking craft beer, compared

to 60 per cent in Wellington and Otago.

But the number is growing, and so are the amount of small breweries, Mr Morrison said.

“Even the larger breweries are putting out craft beers. There is a huge range, with Worcester stout, chocolate beers.”

Consumer New Zealand did a beer tasting for some of these craft beers, and compiled a list

of the top picks.

For a wheat beer, the Croucher Brewing Co Hef came out on top.

Christchurch company Harringtons The Rogue Hop organic pilsner, Emerson’s pilsner and Mac’s Brewery Hop Rocker pilsner took out the lager category.

And for the pale ales, Emerson’s 1812 IPA, Three Boys Brewery golden ale and the Epic Armageddon IPA were the drinks of choice.

But while we have been swilling and sipping, we have actually been slipping down the top beer-drinking country lists.

In 2012 New Zealand was No 27 in the world with 102.2 a year bottles per capita, compared to No 24 (110.4 bottles each) the year before.

The top three spots over those two years were held by the Czech Republic, Austria and Germany (first, second and third respectively).

Ireland comes in at No 6, Australia at No 11, the United States No 4 and the United Kingdom at No 22.

New Zealanders are buying more expensive beers, but not as many of them, Mr Morrison said.

“And the supermarkets are selling the majority of liquor now.”

Mr Cunningham agreed.

“Most people will just preload, go and buy a box of beer before they go out. It’s still bloody expensive to buy a jug.”

But craft brews aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, Ms Rae said.

“Most people liked pilsner or lager when I was working at the bar, and no one would go outside their comfort zones.”

But if the beer was a little cheaper it would soon become very popular, she said.

“As soon as there was a beer of the week it would sell out.

Especially those with higher alcohol volumes.”

Alcohol volumes and calorie count are a couple of other things to think about when buying a brew.

Across town at the popular Fitz Tui Clubrooms in Fitzgerald Ave, DB Export Gold and Tui are the main brews of choice with patrons.

But what’s in the beer we’re drinking?

Regular lagers tend to vary in carbohydrate content from about 10 to 15g per pint.

‘Light’ beers usually have less than 10g of carbohydrates.

Pilsners are thought to have a relatively benign effect on blood sugar, while stouts, porters and Guinness tend to be on the higher end, with upwards of 20g of carbohydrate per pint.

There are a wide variety of real ales covering pale ales through to porters. Real ales will typically have a carbohydrate content of 10 to 20g per pint.

Certain real ales may be given additional flavouring with extra sugar or honey so be prepared for the effect to vary with different beers.

However, most beers have a lower sugar content than wine, spirits or cider (per serving).

A 330ml bottle or can of four per cent alcohol beer is one standard drink.

It is recommended that women drink no more than four, and men no more than six standard drinks a day.

Everyone has their own particular likes and tastes, but when it comes to beer there is a lot to choose from.

The Canstar Blue beer survey found that one third of Kiwis refuse to drink anything but their favourite beer brands.

CALDER STEWART Industries is to design and build a new $30 million dairy services manufacturing plant for Skellerup Holdings on land developed by Ngai Tahu Property.

Skellerup chief executive David Mair said construction of the new building, partially financed by insurance payouts for damage to its Woolston plant, would begin shortly and be finished by December next year.

On completion of the dairy rubber ware development and manufacturing facility on the 3.4ha site at Wigram Business Park, Mr Mair said Skellerup’s existing 200 staff would then begin a staggered move from Woolston to the 18,900 sq m plant.

“This is another significant step for our dairy business and great news for Christchurch,’’ Mr Mair said.

Calder Stewart was awarded the fixed price design and build contract, which was formally signed yesterday, with total project investment inclusive of levies and project management costs estimated at $30 million.

“In addition to providing improved working conditions for staff, the new facility will capture process, flow and efficiency gains, further strengthening the operations of our dairy rubber ware manufacturing business,’’ Mr Mair said.

The site was purchased from Ngai Tahu Property in May last year, he said. It has easy access to Christchurch’s airport and Lyttelton port facilities.

5 minutes with Earthquake role restarts Recent boundary changes have left National MP Nicky Wagner facing a tough task in trying to regain her Christchurch Central seat in this year’s election.

However, her recent ministerial appointments, including Associate Earthquake Recovery Minister, have her revitalised. Max Towle spoke to the mother of two Hi Nicky, for those who may not be familiar with you, please tell me a bit about your life before politics?

I was born and brought up in Christchurch. I went to Burnside Primary School, then Cashmere High School. Since then I’ve lived in the central city for 30 years. I am central city through and through. I brought up my kids here.

Why are you running for Christchurch Central again?

We still need to rebuild the city.

Over the last nine years I’ve really learned a lot. There’s a huge amount of information, rules and regulations, and understanding of how you get things done. I think the most valuable thing is I have a really strong network of locals and organisations that I can connect to Wellington. Being a minister now,

we can really make things happen.

Can you win?

Can I win? Yes. I’ve always worked hard for the people of central Christchurch and I will continue to do that.

What was your reaction to the recent boundary changes, which did not appear to work in your favour?

What have you personally achieved?

I work a lot with individual constituents. During the earthquake I was focused on people’s well-being in terms of housing, insurance, EQC; now it’s getting back to a more balanced mixture of things.

In terms of communities I’ve always been supportive of groups, especially migrant and ethnic groups, but also business communities and how they interact with their neighbours. It’s amazing what can happen when you connect these people together.

Wagner’s political zest Before I became a minister, I was the parliamentary private secretary for earthquake recovery, so I have been working closely with Gerry Brownlee on a lot of the things that have been happening in the central city.

What is yet to be achieved in Christchurch?

How long is a piece of string? This city will always be rebuilding so I don’t want to put an end stop on it, but I think we’re beginning to see momentum. Just in the last week we’ve had the Performing Arts Precinct open with the music centre.

We have moved the RE:Start Mall so we can see more buildings being developed. The Justice Precinct is coming out of the ground, and the bus exchange, convention centre and Metro Sports Facility are moving along.

What are the biggest issues people in this city are facing this year?

If you look at the people of Christchurch, they’re all in different spaces. I think of the famous psychiatrist Elisabeth Kübler-Ross’ book on death and dying – what she said was when somebody grieves they go through five stages. Everyone in this city is going through those stages. It takes eve-

But every day I see more and more people coming to accept what has happened and landing in a reasonable place. More are seeing the opportunities going forward.

You can see the economy growing and low unemployment. We’re generating a lot of activity in the city and people are having more choices because of that.

What was your reaction when

you were offered the new portfolios?

I said “Yes please, prime minister.” I was delighted, of course. I’ve only got four months until the election to learn about them and do a lot of work.

I presume you want to keep them if possible?

I would like to keep them and, yes, I think I’m the right person for the job. Like all people, you get

nervous before starting a new job, but the work I’m doing as a minister is not too different from what I did on a governance level.

Have you met your Christchurch Central opponent – Labour’s Tony Milne? What do you think of him?

I have met Tony and he is a nice young man.

How successful would you say Canterbury’s other National

MPs have been?

We’ve all been through a tough time. Amy Adams’ house was destroyed in the first earthquake, Gerry Brownlee lost his house as well, but I think all of us have scrubbed up well. The key for me is that we’re all committed to Christchurch. We’re fortunate we’ve got a prime minister who comes from Canterbury and understands how important this area is for the country.

What are your hobbies away from work?

When you have a 24/7 job, there’s not much time for that. But when I do have time off, I hang out with my family. I have two boys aged 27 and 31.

If you weren’t a politician, what would you be?

I have had lots of careers over the years. I was a secondary school teacher, I was in business, a regional councillor, but I think what I’m really interested in . . . I was invited to be an adviser to the United Nations on disaster risk reduction, and it’s absolutely fascinating work.

We can offer so much from the experience we’ve been through and help manage natural disaster risk internationally. We have a great reputation for this.

Stop stating the obvious THIS WEEK, Christchurch residents were told something they already know.

“New research” shows significant differences between the wellbeing of residents who have had their insurance claims settled and those who have not . . . well dah.

“Residents who have not had their claims settled are more likely to feel tired, stressed and frustrated.”

These residents are “more likely than those who have had their claims settled to feel insecure, uncertain and angry.”

They are the results from the All Right? study which involved 800 residents over February and March. With the greatest respect to the team, who do a great job bringing joy to residents with various campaigns, we know this and don’t need to be told we’re under pressure. Christchurch Earthquake Recovery Authority commissioned a similar report, so this latest wee gem seems unnecessary. The researchers would have been better off driving around Christchurch for 20 minutes to gauge how we’re feeling.

All Right? manager Sue Turner says “it’s clear Cantabrians are still finding life difficult due to the earthquakes and related stressors.” Once again, we know that, so why and who commissioned a report that was bound to produce a predictable response? Perhaps researchers have been influenced by earthquake scientists who are experts on presenting old information as “ground breaking new

I support raising awareness on how we can keep our mental health in check and often feature mental health experts on to Newstalk ZB. However, the results of the survey benefit who? Turner says “a lot of the findings are to be expected.

tionally can take between five to10 years.” Well intended research perhaps and I don’t want to sound ungrateful, but if these results were ‘expected’ what was the point? Of course we need to have some sort of barometer on mental health, but surely we don’t need patronising media releases reminding us of how terrible we feel.

On a positive note, the All Right? team reinforce many positive messages around our city. They’ve produced wonderfully creative stunts on unsuspecting motorists by paying their petrol bills before they’ve reached the petrol station till. Search the video on YouTube and you can’t help but smile.

Christchurch is very slowly get-

ting back on its feet. It’s just hard to see that sometimes, and the reality for many is that insurance issues and Earthquake Commission problems have not gone away. In a bizarre way, I find myself strangely getting excited about things I would have never given thought to – from driving home from work and noticing new buildings being constructed to seeing a tradesman’s van outside a neighbour house knowing that at least something is being fixed.

I would never have given twohoots about a Vodafone building going up in town – but for the first time, in a long time I felt hopeful. This is the first international private company which has sent a message to our city that, in spite of the easy options of going elsewhere, they believe in Christchurch’s future. On a suburban level, New Brighton has been fortunate to have passionate business-minded residents who have produced a successful campaign generating funds for their under-resourced area. They’ve so far raised more than $20,000 in under a month.

Not bad for an area so many have written off!

It’s these types of positive stories that give me hope that our city will, eventually get back on its feet.

However, it’s time for ‘experts’ to stop telling us how we’re feeling.

Canterbury hit by Postie Plus closures SYDENHAM, BISHOPDALE Mens, Bishopdale Womens and Rangiora Kids are among 12 Postie Plus stores that will close around New Zealand.

Sixty-four jobs will be cut.

Postie Plus has 82 stores throughout New Zealand.

The failed retailer has been bought by a yet-to-be-named foreign retailer.

Prior to the appointment of administrators David Bridgman and Colin McCloy, Postie Plus management had identified a number of stores that were no longer viable, the PwC receivers said in a statement. The retailer went into voluntary administration last month after unsuccessful attempts to recapitalise the business, including an attempt to find a buyer or a new cornerstone shareholder.

On June 4, the day after the appointment of Bridgman and McCloy, a conditional agreement was reached to sell the chain as a going concern to an overseas-based retailer which doesn’t have a presence in New Zealand.

The buyer is conducting due diligence, with the sale expected to be completed around the end of the month.

Local Arborist competes in 7th Asia Pacific Tree Climbing Championships Cairns 2014 – June 21-22

T ree care expert to compete in Australia

F

or Mik Winstanley, owner/operator of Alba Tree Services, it is vital to “treasure your trees”, as they are one of the earth’s greatest natural resources and provide a wealth of benefits for us all.

The Scottish-born tree care specialist gained his National Certificate in Tree Management, then worked in Sweden for two years, completing his apprenticeship as a tree surgeon. He went on to run his own tree care business in Scotland for three years.

After a backpacking holiday here five years ago, during which they “fell in love with the place”, he and his wife decided to emigrate to New Zealand.

Mik set up Alba Tree Services in January this year (after completing his degree in Aboriculture online), offering customers the benefits of his wide experience and numerous qualifications gained in the UK, Scandinavia, Europe and Australia.

However, not only does he love working with trees, Mik also takes part in professional tree-climbing competitions. This weekend he will be competing in the seventh Asia Pacific Tree Climbing Championships being held in Cairns, against competitors from Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand, Polynesia, Australia and New Zealand.

Mik qualified for the Asia Pacific

competition by placing second in the New Zealand national tree climbing competition in October 2013. He had won the South Island championship the previous month.

In February 2013 he gained fifth place in the ISA Asia Pacific tree climbing championship; in September 2012 he won the South Island championship and in August 2007 was first in the South Australian championship.

The competition is made up of five events: Aerial Rescue, where the competitor must climb a tree and rescue an ‘injured’ climber within a time limit; Work Climb, where competitors are tested on their ability to move around a tree using a rope and harness; Secured Footlock, a speed test where competitors must ascend 15m of rope using a footlocking technique; Belayed Speed Climb, where competitors climb a route about 60 feet up a tree – fastest wins; Throwline, where competitors attempt to toss a line through two of eight targets.

Michael’s favourite event is the Belayed Speed Climb, and he hopes to do well in that as well as in Work Climb and Aerial Rescue, which he also enjoys. He likes meeting other competitors and learning about their different techniques. To be successful, technique is more important than having a lot of equipment, he believes, though you also need to be relatively fit.

Gardening Advice with Question:

Last spring I planted a miniature peach tree in a sunny spot in my garden. It looked very healthy until it was flooded a couple of times during heavy rain - it then lost most of its leaves. Is it worth replanting the tree in a drier position, or should I just replace it?

Answer:

Unfortunately if the roots of your peach tree have been too wet for an extended time, they may have rotted out. You will need to determine if the tree is still alive by checking there is sap flowing to the branches. Do this by scratching the surface of the branch with your fingernail, or prune the tips of the taller branches to

see if it is still alive at its outer extremities. Keep pruning back and if no signs of life, work your way down to lower branches to determine if it’s worth transplanting or starting again with a new tree.

Whether you decide to transplant or plant a new specimen, now is the best time to do it. Select a spot in the garden which does not flood to the same extend as the previous site. Dig a hole twice as wide and as deep as the container the tree came in. Place the tree in the hole and add the soil making it compact and firm as you go. The ideal position is when the tree sits in the ground, the base of the stem should be slightly higher than ground level to prevent water pooling around the trunk and causing any rot. Couch potato cancer risk A COUCH potato lifestyle is linked to a significantly greater risk of certain cancers as well as heart disease and diabetes, research has shown.

Every extra two hours spent sitting each day was associated with a 10 per cent increased chance of developing cancer of the womb lining in women, while bowel and lung cancer risk was raised by eight per cent and six per cent respectively.

The effect appeared to be unrelated to how much exercise people took when not sitting.

This suggests that even in people who are generally physically active, sitting down for too long can increase cancer risk.

Scientists came to the conclusion after studying pooled data from 43 studies with more than four million participants and almost 70,000 cancer cases.

This kind of research, known as “meta-analysis”, can uncover trends that might be hidden from individual studies recruiting small numbers of people.

No association was seen between sedentary behaviour and the risk of breast, ovarian, prostate, stomach, oesophageal (gullet), testicular, kidney and rectal cancers.

Fast-forward a few years and Theo’s now a business partner with an antiquarian shop owner.

The Goldfinch has the right amount of complexity overlaid on a simple plot.

• Olen Steinhauer THE CAIRO AFFAIR John Le Carre comes to mind as you read this spy story and it deserves the comparison.

Sophie and her diplomat husband Emmett are based at the American embassy in Hungary.

Just after she reveals an affair to Emmett, a stranger walks into the restaurant and shoots him dead.

Sophie breaks protocol and rushes back to her lover in Cairo instead of returning to Boston with her husband’s body.

IT IS only early days for this year’s winter and I reckon the best antidote to the cold and wet is hunkering down with a good book. Here are my top five for winter 2014.

• Donna Tartt THE GOLDFINCH A big read that never feels like a challenge. It takes a while to draw you in but is very compelling once you’re there.

The main character, the Goldfinch, is actually a painting, which was stolen in an opportune moment by a young boy during a terrorist bomb attack on a New York art gallery.

Theo’s mother dies in the blast and is informally adopted by a well-to-do family of a schoolmate.

They try and make sense of Emmett’s murder and everything starts to unravel as they uncover a covert operation called Stumbler.

Then it’s all about survival.

• Jo Nesbo THE SON Nesbo’s Harry Hole character is on hiatus in his latest thriller, The Son. Instead, we’re introduced to a youngish guy, still troubled by the death of Ab Loftus, a respected cop.

Sonny is serving time for murder after going off the rails following the apparent suicide of his dad.

Revenge is at the forefront of his mind and he breaks out of the high security prison to embark on a killing spree of crooks and crook lawmen. On the run, he finds a love interest and meets up with one of

his father’s cop buddies. He finds out that all is not what he thought and the story launches towards an explosive ending.

• Greg Isles NATCHEZ BURNING I loved this book, and not just because it shares it’s name with one of my favourite songs from bluesman Howlin’ Wolf.

Isles is a very established and successful writer but I think Natchez Burning is his great American novel. At the core of the story is the racial tension that has been at the forefront of Natchez, Mississippi for decades.

Penn Cage is the mayor and about to marry Caitlin, publisher of the local paper.

Local journalist Henry Sexton is

determined to uncover the brutal activities of the Ku Klux Klan who are still a force in their town.

A well-crafted tale of good versus evil with a high octane finish.

• Eleanor Catton THE LUMINARIES What a great reading project for winter. Catton’s fame as the Booker prize-winner has catapulted her to fame all around the world on the back of this engrossing story of hardship, relationships, intrigue and skullduggery.

Catton’s painting of the people and the place of Hokitika is truly remarkable.

Reading The Luminaries does require commitment, but the pay-off makes the effort worthwhile.

BOOK REVIEW Heartland Written by Jenny Pattrick Reviewed by Lesley McIntosh DONNY MAC was released at Easter, about a month before Pansy Hollaway – also known as Nightshade – disappeared for good.

The story is set around a small town at the base of Mount

Ruapehu, Manawa, once a milling town but it now stands half empty, with streets parallel to the railway line being named Rimu, Matai, and Miro after the trees milled there.

Like many townships, there is a fascinating collection of characters living in the community and they are joined in the ski season with ‘townies’ who also love the mountain.

Best-selling novelist Jenny Pattrick has cleverly used some of the characters she first aired in radio stories in the novel, some of whom come from her own family background.

Beautiful descriptive writing leaves the reader in no doubt of its New Zealand roots: “There’s a rusty gate squeezed between two of the big macrocarpas and a concrete path leading to the

front door of number 37 Miro.”

Wellington-based Pattrick has written seven novels and she has deservedly been awarded an OBE for services to the Arts in New Zealand.

An easy read, this book will appeal to anyone who enjoys history and the challenging relationships within townships and families throughout rural New Zealand.

Lyttelton Road Tunnel For 50 years, the tunnel has enabled trucks, cars, goods and people to travel easily between the port and town.

S

tepping back in time to February 1964, the Christchurch-Lyttelton Road Tunnel was officially opened by the then Governor General Sir Bernard Fergusson in the presence of the Prime Minister Keith Holyoake and a team of other dignitaries and locals. With fanfare trumpets, speeches and a drive through, the celebratory party then headed to the Upham Memorial Gardens, now known as the Lyttelton Rose Garden, for a formal afternoon tea.

From as early as 1919, there were serious proposals for a road tunnel. Two specific groups emerged in Christchurch, one supporting a tunnel and the other advocating for a port at the estuary. According to the Road Tunnel Authority Official Booklet, there were many false starts for the tunnel project. On-off grants and the Second World

War all got in the way of the project getting underway.

In 1960, the project was given the green light, and in 1961, the project was put out to tender. Fletcher Construction in partnership with Kaiser Engineers and Constructors Inc of the USA won it. Tunnel boring began. All the spoil was used in the construction of the motorway and not for the reclamation of more port land. The tunnel is basically a large bore hole that is a concrete-lined arch split in half with the lower section the motorway and the upper section the air ventilation system.

The New Zealand Transport Authority had planned an official celebration to commemorate this 50th birthday in February. However, due to delays in the construction of the new tunnel control building, the celebrations are on hold until that is completed.

John Denton, a current Lyttelton resident, remembers the day the tunnel was opened. He was actually one of the invited guests.

“My early recollections of the tunnel were that it didn’t change life in Lyttelton too much. In the 1960s, hardly anyone had a car, so I don’t remember too much traffic. It was when the passenger train service was discontinued in the 1970s that tunnel usage increased significantly, and at that time, containerisation of the port also had a significant impact.”

Rose Anderson, a friend of Andrea King’s, remembers the opening of the tunnel well. She was one of the first people to drive through it.

“The traffic was banked up back into Fitzgerald Avenue, and as the occupants of each car came up to the tunnel, they were given a commemorative card to keep. I still have my card,” she said.

No doubt many tunnel stories will be shared in 2014 as people remember this significant milestone in the development of Canterbury.

Lyttelton rich in history Lyttelton Bakery - small but mighty

his port village that is home to about 3000 people is rich in history and activity.

Part of the town’s history is the railway tunnel which opened in 1867. It continues to be the main access point from Christchurch to the Port of Lyttelton. The tunnel cuts travel distance between the two cities by about 8 kilometres and is commonly used for delivering goods and services between the two locations. Holcim helps the

Timeball Station rise again

H

olcim New Zealand has got in behind Heritage New Zealand’s plan to rebuild the Timeball Station at Lyttelton.

The Lyttelton Timeball Station (1876) was one of New Zealand’s most significant historic buildings. It was built to provide timekeeping services to ships in Lyttelton Harbour, and for decades the time was marked by dropping the timeball at noon everyday.

The earthquakes in February and June 2011 damaged the building beyond repair, but careful dismantling and salvage work

by Heritage New Zealand has allowed as much material as possible to be stored for future use. Holcim New Zealand have pledged a substantial donation to help restore this national icon, having had a long-standing connection to Lyttelton through the Holcim Cement depot and regular visits by their two ships supplying cement to the region.

Gearing up for the rebuild Prompt cement supply during the Christchurch rebuild fast-tracked a $5m project to increase Holcim cement capacity at Lyttelton. Two new silos each with a capacity of 2,000 tonnes have recently been completed. These silos are now operational and have increased cement storage capacity to 11,000 tonnes at the depot.

MAZDA3: Soul red is a $250 option but it stands out with its vibrant colour.

New Mazda3 sets PRIOR TO its release, Mazda New Zealand sent out a raft of information on the new Mazda3.

While I was well prepared for its concept and style, nothing could have prepared me for its presence when I first saw it, especially in the test car’s case, which was painted in a colour Mazda labels soul red. It is a $250 option but it really looks the part.

The new Mazda3 is sleek, sporty and is a shape that is well distant to the raft of mid-size sedans and hatchbacks which ply the mainstream market. If you envisage the new Mazda6 and take stock of its shape, the smaller Mazda3 looks similar, they are both elegant designs which stand out for their flair.

As before, the Mazda3 is available here in two body styles – hatch and sedan – and there is a choice of two Skyactive engines, 2-litre and 2.5-litre. The nine-model range lists from $32,795 to $47,495 for the SP25 Limited.

I’m scheduled for three Mazda3 drives, the first off the rank was the SP25 Ltd sedan and it made a major impression on me, it borders on the sports sedan category along with the practicality we have come to

expect from the Mazda3.

I’ve long rated Mazda highly as a car maker, its attention to detail and engineering prowess is something I’ve often commented upon over the years and the SP25 is a stunning car, it endears itself with an involving driving feel and high comfort for all on board.

And it is also a state-ofthe-art car with comprehensive control systems and displays which you ordinarily wouldn’t find on a car of this class. A centre console dial navigates the infotainment and communication systems, along with GPS and the view from a reversing camera.

Together the driver can quickly build confidence in the car, it is clever but such are the chassis dynamics that the electronics aren’t relied upon.

Mazda hasn’t lost sight of the engineering elements which go the distance in terms of refinement and sophistication; the rear suspension, especially, is a fully independent multiple-link type which promotes an unrestricted handling feel and control over the bumps doesn’t upset in-cabin comfort.

I took the test car up the Lake Coleridge power station road and delighted in the SP25’s ability in the tight and open flowing corners.

It has control and balance in a corner which other socalled sports sedans should be envious of.

Providing the grip in the first instance are sport specification Dunlop tyres (215/45 x 18in) and they send positive information back to the driver, the steering is sharp, directional and accurate. Turn-in is precise and composure and control into a corner is a handling strong point.

Under the bonnet sits an engine which is pretty much a carryover from the last series. I’ve written a lot about Mazda’s Skyactive engine technology, it is a programme developed to enhance fuel economy along with performance akin to vehicle type, Skyactive also includes i-Stop which shuts

sion, I’m hoping for an SP25 manual drive later but the six-speed auto is a honey in terms of shift quality and ratio selection. There are manual paddles if you like taking control of your own shifts, but I found that when left to its own devices the electronic mapping systems never left me at a point when the gearing was too tall or too low.

Along with the safety and control items I mentioned earlier, the SP25 also gets specification features such as head-up display, radar cruise control and electric sunroof.

It is a car where you get a lot for your money, and even though it sits a little more expensive than some other models in this sector, there is a high value aspect, not to mention the wonderful driving experience and the looks which go with it.

The SP25 provided me with one of the great drives so far for 2014, it is a class act. But if you look at Mazda as a company and what they have produced over the years in terms of performance cars, it’s no wonder the new ‘3’ is a standout, I’m not at all surprised.

I simply can’t wait to get into the other variants.

Honda New Zealand has launched the third-generation Jazz.

The all-new model retains the design fundamentals of its predecessors along with the addition of the latest Honda engineering techniques.

From the tip of the front bumpers to the end of the exhaust, nothing was left unexamined when designing the latest Jazz.

This includes major elements such as the engines, transmissions, chassis construction, safety systems, electronic systems, glass and aerodynamics, interior materials and driver features.

Boost for Warriors ahead of home games UTILITY BEN Henry and prop Charles Gubb have been recalled for the Warriors’ round 15 NRL clash against the Brisbane Broncos at Mount Smart Stadium on Saturday.

Henry has missed the last two games against Newcastle and South Sydney with a knee complaint, while Gubb plays his third match this year after last appearing in the seventhround encounter with St. George Illawarra Dragons in April.

He had his tenth game of the season for the club’s NSW Cup side in last Saturday’s 16-12 win against Cronulla in Gisborne, while the previous week he travelled to Perth with the NRL squad but didn’t play.

With Ben Matulino sidelined after minor knee surgery, captain Simon Mannering moves to the second row and Sebastine Ikahihifo starts at loose forward in his tenth consecutive appearance this season.

has brought Sam Rapira into the starting front row with Suaia Matagi shifting to the bench alongside Henry, Gubb and Feleti Mateo. It means hooker Siliva Havili will again line up for the NSW Cup side.

“It’s disappointing losing Ben Matulino but a real positive having Ben Henry back at the same time.

His versatility gives us options on the bench,” said McFadden.

“There’s also encouraging news about Ben Matulino. His surgery on

his (right) knee went well last week and we’re now expecting him back against Parramatta. With another bye to come it means he would miss only two games all up,” he said.

Saturday’s game is the first of three consecutive home games for the Warriors with the Parramatta Eels coming to town on June 12 and the Penrith Panthers being hosted on June 29. Splitting those two games is the Warriors’ second bye.

Who decides when to call ‘lights out’ HOW DO sports stars know when to call it quits?

Do they stand down while they’re still going strong or do they keep going until a decision has to be made for them?

It’s a question that was on my mind as I watched the San Antonio Spurs wrap up the NBA finals, led by their talisman Tim Duncan.

The 38-year-old has been with the team since 1997; he now has teammates that were in primary school when he made his debut.

He was part of championshipwinning teams in 1999, 2003, 2005 and 2007, and has a record that puts him among the game’s greats.

For most of the last seven years, it looked like his career would plateau out, and he would never get to taste glory again.

He came oh-so-close last year, when the Spurs came within 30 seconds of a title before losing in improbable fashion.

Now, he’s back on top.

When he does retire, it will be on his terms, but not everyone can be so lucky.

It’s a sight commonplace around the world of sport – players raging against the dying of the light.

Just look at Roger Federer.

He has only won two grand slams in his last 19 attempts, the

last at Wimbledon two years ago.

He had a great run, but has been overtaken by his younger rivals, and barring a miraculous recovery, he will bow out with his best days a distant memory.

When you think about it, we haven’t said goodbye to an All Black great for years.

Tana Umaga’s retirement in 2005 came out of nowhere.

Brad Thorn did go out on a high after the 2011 World Cup, but his stop-start rugby career meant he was never really cherished.

Andrew Hore slipped out quietly at the end of last year, retiring to a central Otago farm.

We haven’t had any grand departures, because all our stars from the last decade are still hanging on.

There are seven names that come to mind – Richie McCaw, Keven Mealamu, Tony Woodcock, Ma’a Nonu, Dan Carter, Conrad Smith and Jerome Kaino.

Smith and Kaino were the last of those seven to make their debuts, in 2004.

None of the current squad won their first caps between 2005 and 2007, and none of those who did are likely to make a comeback.

We’re missing three years’ worth of All Blacks, and so the few veterans left are having to extend their careers.

While some of them might be in top form come next year’s World Cup, it’s hard to think they all will be.

We currently have the same loose forwards, centres and firstfive – together, the nucleus of any rugby team – as we had in 2011, and they’re all showing signs of ageing.

With the World Cup just 18 months away, they’ll all be hoping it can serve as a final, glorious send-off.

But at what cost to their team?

Queensland’s eight-year dominance of State of Origin came to an end on Wednesday night, with their core of stars now approaching the twilight of their careers.

Likewise, defending champions Spain were bundled out of the World Cup yesterday – the players that won big titles in 2008, 2010, and 2012 just couldn’t go another campaign.

Their midfielder Xavi might be one of the best to have ever graced a football pitch, but by continuing to build a team around him, Spain brought about their own downfall.

Let’s hope we won’t be saying the same thing about the All Blacks, Richie and Dan next November.

While he’s soaking up as much as he can, as one of the few Rams with prior NBL experience, he’s also been helping their rookies get up to speed.

“I try and help out anyone I can,” he said.

After this weekend, there will be just one game left in the Rams’ comeback season, but Rusbatch thinks their future looks rosy.

“We’re ending the season better than we started off,” he said.

Rusbatch on fire for Rams Briefly Horse trainer dies

JUNE HAS been good to the Canterbury Rams, and wing Ethan Rusbatch in particular.

They have won three of their four games this month, beating the Taranaki Mountainairs, the Waikato Pistons twice, and only losing to the second-place Wellington Saints.

Rusbatch has come up big during that stretch, notching season highs of 18 and 17 points in the two encounters with the Pistons.

Shooting guard Glen Dandridge has been out with an elbow injury, while forward Richie Edwards was ejected during last Sunday’s game in Hamilton, meaning Rusbatch has had to up his production.

It was a change he was ready for.

“In all the other teams I’ve played for, I’ve been a leading scorer,” he said.

But he knew that with the players in the Rams’ starting five, he would have to adjust.

“I didn’t mind taking a different role and just try and help us do whatever we can to win,” he said.

He’s hoping his form can carry into this weekend’s away doubleheader, which starts tonight in Invercargill against the Southland Sharks.

The Rams were thrashed 106-81 by the Super City Rangers at the end of May, and since then they have done nothing but defensive practice, which was starting to show, said coach Dave Harrison.

In June, the Rams have kept opposing sides to 85 points per game on 41 per cent shooting, a massive improvement when compared to the 94 points per game on 49 per cent shooting they allowed during their first 11 games.

Rusbatch said they knew from early on that their defence would be what won them games.
