If an eatery is busy it has to be good – that's the rule of thumb for seasoned travellers. Therefore Dose Diner in Blenheim Road must be very good. Any lunchtime it's literally bursting at the seams with people dining in or queuing for takeouts. Smart operators book their lunch table ahead.

he reason for this popularity is the excellent food and quality coffee. Beans are from the famous Lyttelton Coffee Company. And yes, at Dose they do trim milk. The all-day breakfast menu is available from 7.30am to 2.30pm. It's imaginative and expansive and, as well as the usual favourites, offers more exotic fare like Spanish beans and pulled pork with coleslaw. The raspberry and mascarpone brioche French toast served with berry compote, bacon, vanilla custard and maple syrup is a customer favourite. The Japanese-style chicken burger is a close second. Coming soon and also guaranteed to make a hit are waffles. They'll be served American style with fried chicken, or with ice-cream for the traditionalists.
