EDITOR’S PERSPECTIVE

On a recent long-haul flight I watched the gripping mountain-climbing thriller Everest. It was one of those epic movies that leaves a lasting impression: totally engrossing, yet difficult and disturbing to watch at the same time. It jolted my senses and stirred up all sorts of emotions … as I sat on the plane with tears streaming down my face, I realised it was not the sort of thing you should watch when you're stuck in a confined space surrounded by several hundred people. Anyone who has seen the movie, or remembers the real-life event as it unfolded in May 1996, knows the tragic outcome. Highly-regarded Kiwi mountaineer Rob Hall was one of the guides leading a group expedition to the summit of Mount Everest. Hall perishes in a blizzard on his descent, as do several other climbers. As he teetered on the brink of death he had a heart-wrenching final phone conversation with his wife, Jan, who was back in New Zealand and pregnant. Sadly, Hall never arrived home to meet his new daughter. Since seeing Everest, I have wondered many times about the psyche of adventurers, explorers, extreme athletes and elite mountain climbers such as Rob Hall. What drives these people to take on the fickle forces of nature and push themselves mentally and physically to the point of exhaustion, risking pain, injury, illness – even death – to achieve a goal or a dream? What is the attraction and why do so many chase that addictive sense of satisfaction and fulfilment? Those same questions came to mind earlier this month when I was a spectator at the Coast To Coast multisport race. It was fascinating and uplifting to watch people of all ages, colour, shapes and sizes as they ran, walked, skipped or hobbled down the finish chute at New Brighton. All of them were clearly exhausted but, at the same time, elated that they had just achieved a significant goal. One friend of mine ran for seven hours in agony after badly twisting his knee, and may well have done serious long-term damage. Another friend struggled with nausea and cold sweats for the entire kayak leg, so crippling was his fear of falling out and drowning in the unpredictable Waimakariri River. Yet, straight after the race, as they gulped their cold beers in the finishers' area, all the dramas and low points were instantly forgotten. That indescribable feeling of having conquered their demons and proved to themselves, and others, that they could push themselves out of their comfort zone and achieve what had at first seemed impossible, made it all worthwhile. Of course many of us do not consider risking life and limb to scale the heights of a massive mountain, or traversing the width of the South Island by foot, kayak and bike, as must-do activities to be ticked off our bucket list. Whatever challenge you decide to tackle, the important thing to remember is the pride and ecstasy you will feel when you've overcome the odds, the elements, or simply your own fear and self-doubt. Just imagine crossing that finish line – whether it be literally or figuratively – and that should be motivation enough.

Many happy returns for Dame Kiri Dame Kiri Te Kanawa will celebrate her 72nd birthday on Monday 7 March with Christchurch opera lovers, opening her New Zealand tour with a gala event that night.

T

he historic Isaac Theatre Royal is the venue for the opening performance from Dame Kiri, who will undertake a six-venue recital tour of New Zealand. Dame Kiri last performed on the Isaac Theatre Royal stage just 10 days before the 22 February 2011 earthquake. That show attracted the last 100 percent full house before the theatre was closed for four years. The Christchurch evening will be a 'gala black tie and red carpet' fundraising event to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the 2011 disaster, and to celebrate the first fully operational year of a fabulous restored theatre in the heart of the city. “The Gisborne and Tauranga events are already sold out,” tour organiser Paul Gleeson said. “I think people realise that this could be a last opportunity to experience one of the world's most-loved voices.” Dame Kiri will be accompanied by one of New Zealand's finest musicians, the internationallyacclaimed pianist Terence Dennis, and the repertoire will feature a specially-selected programme of romantic songs and arias that will delight music lovers. These will include Dame Kiri's personal favourites from Mozart, Handel, Vivaldi, Puccini, Heggie, Guastavino, Obradors, Ginastera and Canteloube, as well as a selection of traditional folk songs.

How did the idea for Ministry of Awesome develop from its Q inception to its fruition? & Its creation came about in a highly organic, highly iterative A

fashion by now-Deputy Mayor Vicki Buck; Student Volunteer Army founder Sam Johnson; head of UC School of Maori and Indigenous Studies Sacha McMeeking; and myself. It started with a bunch of conversations, exploring what we could do to be most useful and impactful in post-quake Christchurch. When it was first formed, the organisation was kind of a bucket to house our various projects, but it quickly evolved from that to being a supportive champion for the many brilliant ideas seen bubbling up within the community.

What various initiatives is Ministry of Awesome running to Q make a better, brighter city? & A There are a huge variety of initiatives led by Chief Awesome

Our co-working space is fantastic for freelancers and small organisations to work in a collaborative environment with like-minded people. And last year, in partnership with the Unreasonable Institute in Colorado, we ran our first Unreasonable Lab – a five-day business model validation lab. It was a huge success and we're looking forward to additional programmes just like it. We also worked with Canterbury Development Corporation (CDC) to create InnovationMap.co.nz, a website that helps entrepreneurs find helpful resources available to them.

What inspires you most about living in post-quake Q Christchurch? & A I love the kinds of conversations we can't have anywhere else in the world. What is the best way for citizens to engage in the recovery of the city? What should the role of the arts be? How can the transitional movement inform longer-term, more permanent development? How do we prioritise potentially competing economic, social, political and environmental interests? Although these questions are relevant worldwide, they've really been brought to the fore in our unique postquake environment, and I love the way ordinary citizens are experimenting with the answers.

entrepreneur: a commitment to making it work and an obsession with continuous learning. Without commitment you're likely to give up — entrepreneurship is a long, hard, slog, with frequent setbacks and disappointment – and without the obsession with learning, those setbacks will derail you. 2. The second is about the team. In 2012 we had Ernesto Sirolli speak at our TEDx event, and he talked about the three cornerstones every successful business needs to master: the product, marketing and financial management. He also said that never in the history of the world has a single individual been able do all three beautifully – you may be able to get by, but one of them will be your passion and the others will be done reluctantly because you have to. So often we're taught this myth that entrepreneurship is a solo sport, when really entrepreneurship is the art of teamwork. 3. The third is about the market. The famous Silicon Valley entrepreneur and investor Marc Andreessen has said that the market is more essential than product or team. For example, in 1984 FedEx launched Zapmail, the first faxing service. However, the market wasn't ready, and so it was a total flop. It's extremely difficult to close a sale if people can't get their heads around what you do. What would your advice be to those who want to make a Q difference to the fabric of our city's rebirth? & I'll plagiarise my mom, who was plagiarising someone else: Show A up, pay attention, speak the truth, and be open to outcomes.

Great attractions by the seaside On a hot day, the beaches of Sumner are packed with people of all ages. But it is not just the beaches that are attracting people to Sumner. Five years on from the earthquakes the local businesses have also re-established themselves, offering a wide variety of cafés and restaurants and shops ranging from fashion boutiques to surf equipment.

“T

he road to Sumner is much better now. The Ferrymead Bridge has been repaired and there is even a coastal pathway from there all the way to Sumner,” says the co-ordinator of the Sumner Business Group, Kath Cross. “People didn't feel safe on the roads for a long time, but they are now 80 percent fixed. I feel business is back to preearthquake levels at weekends and, in the evenings, the restaurants are packed.”

Martine Marshall, the co-owner of Le Petit Hotel, at 16 Marriner Street, has a personal insight into the long-time popularity of Sumner. Many of the guests to her charming, French-style hotel are visitors from overseas who do not bother hiring a car while staying there. To them, all the attractions of Sumner are within easy walking distance. There's a pub, The Cave Rock Bar, and it's not far to the Hollywood Cinema and then on to all the restaurants and shops. It's somewhat further along the beach to the Ocean Café & Bar at Scarborough, but a very pleasant walk. At the Hollywood, it's always a pleasure to discuss the history of Christchurch

the wife of Glenn, the head chef and owner of the nearby Headless Mexican. What's so great about the Delicatessen is the wide range of ready-to-eat takeaway meals available. Not far around the corner, in Nayland Street, is the L'Estrange Art Gallery, which is associated with the work of Bryan L’Estrange, Nigel Brown, Hamish Allan, Hannah Kidd, Tony De Latour, Simon Kaan, Alan Pearson and Ewan McDougal. Southern Ballet Theatre celebrated its 40th anniversary in December at the Isaac Theatre Royal. Current and former dancers, parents, teachers and staff joined Southern Ballet’s Founder Lorraine Peters, her Co-Patron Fiona Tonkin and Chairman of the Board Clifford Cox to share a few memories before enjoying the opening night of the gala production of Cinderella. On occasions they visit local parks. “For older pre-school children we have an assigned teacher preparing children for primary school and, from all accounts, it certainly helps with settling them into the school system. This is the world of Laughter Yoga, a class that involves no gags or Christmas cracker jokes, but laughing for the simple sake of laughter itself and the wellbeing it brings. By Rachel Smith

elebrating their ninth birthday next month, St Albans Laughter Club was the first in the South Island to be established. Every week people come together to sit in a group, make eye contact and begin laughter exercises which are combined with deep diaphragmatic yoga breathing. “There is a real connection – it's incredible. It is very simple but lifechanging,” says Hannah Airey, founder of the Club and the Lotus Community Wellbeing Trust. “When someone else is laughing it is hard not to laugh with them.” Those who attend do so for a wide variety of reasons - for help in dealing with serious issues such as a cancer diagnosis

or grief; for anxiety and stress; or simply because they have forgotten how to laugh. There are no limits when it comes to gender, age or physical abilities – all you need is some comfortable clothing to wear and a willingness to give it a try. Hannah says that laughter works at a neural level on the body, triggering the release of endorphins and serotonin, and also provides a cardiovascular workout that doubles your normal resting heart rate. Importantly, even if you are faking your laughter your body still has the same biological response, providing enormous psychological and physiological benefits. The Laughter Club is run by volunteers for a $2 koha, with proceeds forming part of the funding for Lotus Community

Equestrian star the Show-stopper Canterbury equestrian fans are in for a treat if they're planning to head to the Wanaka A&P Show next month. Catriona Williams, who represented New Zealand on the international stages at Badminton in 1997-1999 and the Open European Championships at Burghley in 1999, will be the Wanaka Show's 2016 guest of honour on March 11-12.

W

illiams is one of the most wellknown females in New Zealand equestrian circles. After a horse riding accident left her a C6/C7 tetraplegic in 2002, she has continued to forge a successful career in sport horse breeding with her husband Sam's family stud, Little Avondale, in the Wairarapa. She is also widely known as the face behind the CatWalk Spinal Cord Injury Trust and has earned national honours for her extensive charity work raising money and awareness for spinal injuries. As well as being a keynote speaker at a sponsors' evening, Catriona Williams will declare the Show 'open' on the Saturday. Wanaka Show co-ordinator Jane Stalker is thrilled that someone of Williams' calibre is so keen to attend. “It's an honour to have Catriona here for the Wanaka Show. We know she'll be a big drawcard for the hundreds of horse riders competing here, but her inspirational story also has wider public appeal,” she says. The Wanaka A&P Show is one of New Zealand's largest agricultural and pastoral events. It attracts more than 35,000 people each year, including many from the Canterbury region. Run over two days and set on picturesque showgrounds overlooking Lake Wanaka, the Show includes traditional features such as equestrian and livestock events; home industry displays; wool classing; and more

WHAT WILL WE BE EATING A new year with new beginnings and potentially new food trends. If we follow international pundits' predictions, our diet will be healthy and somewhat vege-centric. It is, after all, the United Nations International Year of the Legume.

T

hat aside, poke, seaweed, and vegetables are picked to be top of the international pops. Poke? Looking puzzled? Pronounced like okay, this is a popular Hawaiian dish of raw fish – usually tuna - marinated in soy and sesame served on seasoned rice. It's tipped to be the new sushi. Hurray, it's goodbye kale. Seaweed, the new super food that is full of antioxidants, fibre, iodine and good fats, shoves kale off the top of the healthy ‘must-eat’ list. The list also features umami, a taste sensation that is distinctly lacking in kale! Other veggies will star on our plates as we cut down on meat, proteins and carbs. Cauliflower steaks and spiralised vegetable noodles (dig out that spiraliser from the kitchen drawer) will frequently replace meat and pasta. Those stalks and stems don't go into the compost either. Root-to-stem dining is making it big, with off-cuts being eaten rather than tossed in the compost. Cooking methods will be bold and brave, with lots of fire and smoke. Think barbecue, home smoking and blackened veggie salads. Whole milk, butter and cheese are back in the good books as we realise that fat is not all bad and those of us who like a bit of the naughty can breathe a sigh of relief. Donuts are in vogue and fried chicken is going to go gangbusters. If you believe the trend predictors, it looks like an interesting year. Bon appétit everyone.

INGREDIENTS: Pizzetta Dough 350 ml warm water 4 tsp runny honey 2 1/2 tsp dry yeast 60 ml (2 fl oz) extra virgin olive oil 4 cups + 2 Tbsp plain flour (plus extra for dusting) 2 tsp sea salt To assemble and bake 2 Tbsp vanilla oil for brushing – (heat 180 ml of grapeseed oil over a low heat and when warmed pour over 2 scraped vanilla pods and seeds) 1 cup feta cheese, in small cubes 4 figs, dried or fresh, in wedges 48 (170 g) grapes, halved, preferably purple wine grapes 6 thyme sprigs 2 Tbsp parmesan, finely grated To serve 2 Tbsp vanilla vincotto syrup as follows: , 700 ml red wine, 2 vanilla pods split, 60 ml runny honey, 1 wide strip orange peel, about 6 fresh cherries. Place all ingredients in a small saucepan. Slowly simmer until reduced by 2/3. Remove peel and discard. Remove vanilla pods and insert into a small sterilised bottle. Pour in vincotto liquid and seal. For the syrup to drizzle on the pizzettas take 60 ml of the vincotto liquid and slowly reduce in a shallow pan to thick syrup, about 10 minutes. This makes 2 Tbsp - enough for the drizzle. Lemon peel, threads Cracked pepper

METHOD: Pizzetta dough Pour warm water in the bowl of a stand-mixer with the paddle attachment or, if mixing by hand, use a large bowl and wooden spoon. Add honey and stir to combine. Sprinkle yeast over surface. Allow to foam, 10-15 minutes. Stir by hand or turn mixer on low speed and add oil. Then pour in half the flour with all the salt. Add remaining flour a bit at a time until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl. Place dough on a lightly-floured work surface. Knead until dough comes together into a smooth elastic ball. Place in an oiled bowl, cover with a towel and allow to rise one hour in a warm place.

To assemble and bake Preheat oven to 250oC. Put a pizza stone in oven to heat or prepare a heavy foil-lined baking tray brushed with grapeseed oil. Punch down dough. Knead a few times on work surface, using flour sparingly. Cut into 60g portions. Roll out each pizzetta to a thin circle and place on pizza stone or prepared baking tray. Brush tops with vanilla oil. Arrange topping ingredients, finishing with a sprinkle of parmesan. Bake for 10 minutes until edges are browned. To serve Drizzle pizzettas with vanilla vincotto (see above). Ring the culinary changes from day to night There is something of a chameleon of the culinary scene in the heart of Halswell. It's Verge Café and it might be called the Superman of cafés. In the daytime it's the mild-mannered Clark Kent café where chef Kylie Delahunt will present you with fantastic Kiwi classic cuisine from 7am until 5pm. Straw offers strong, safe and sustainable option New technologies and materials are transforming the look and feel of our homes and businesses. As supplies of cement and steel for architecture begin to dwindle, an increasing number of New Zealanders are turning to natural earth and straw for new home construction.

in Hall – the name behind an international building conference in Methven in March – says we should be trying to use less concrete and steel. Both leave a hefty carbon footprint, and straw panel construction offers a great alternative. “There are some exciting developments in straw panel construction and we are really excited by this,” Min Hall says. “There is a real potential for this in New Zealand – particularly in Canterbury, the grain bowl of New Zealand, where there is an enormous need for warm, healthy houses

with a light environmental footprint.” Producing crops which can wholly be utilised – grain heads and grain stalk, hemp where the whole plant can be used for fabrics, oils and building materials – make good business sense on the grain fields of Canterbury, Min says. Importantly, these materials offer a strong, safe and sustainable option. Traditional brick and wooden house walls lose more heat than a straw bale building. Pompallier House in Russell is one of the oldest surviving natural buildings in New Zealand. “It was constructed in 1842 by French priests using rammed earth. Today it is a

thriving tourist attraction,” Min says. “Earth buildings built to the specifications of New Zealand Earth Building Standards performed really well in the 2010 and 2011 Canterbury earthquakes.” It's not just straw that is changing the face of the construction industry, with a wide range of building alternatives now available. “It is reassuring that there are timber merchants who specialise in untreated timber, and that there is at least one earth plaster commercially available as well as silicate-based paints,” Min says. “The rise in acceptance of wool as an insulation product is also encouraging.”

hese attributes were definitely required for one of their recent projects – repairs to an earthquakedamaged 1980s townhouse in Burnside, where the foundation slab had slumped to varying degrees up to a maximum of 68mm. The situation was complicated by the fact that the townhouse was the rear unit of two conjoined dwellings. The front unit had little earthquake damage and its integrity needed to be maintained while the rear unit was lifted from its slab for levelling work to be undertaken. Add even more complications and, prior to the lift, all the concrete paths and landscaping within one metre of the foundation needed to be removed and then the lift had to be undertaken without removing the house's brickwork. Once the

LITTLE GREEN FINGERS and global gumboots Following the success last year of the inaugural Oderings School Gardens Show, the Canterbury Horticultural Society is pleased to announce that this year's competition will take place at the Woolston Club between 11 and 13 March.

he event showcases the innovative garden designs of 12 Christchurch primary schools. The theme this year is 'our world' and schools participating in the competition may use their imagination and creative skills to produce an original landscaped garden which interprets this theme. Of last year's competitors, former Ellerslie judge Rachel Vogan commented that the quality of the entries was exceptional. “These gardens would not be out of place in an international design competition,” she said. Tony Kunowski, Manager of the Canterbury Horticultural Society, said “Christchurch is the Garden City, and we would love to see the show become a major event in our summer calendar. This is a great way to encourage children to work together as a team, to fire up their imaginations and thought processes, from planning and design stage to execution. As we reflect on the last five years, architect Cymon Allfrey asks us to look forward. Is our greatest challenge yet to come?

owards the end of last year I was asked to present a paper at the Architectural Designers New Zealand (ADNZ) conference about how we, as a design community, responded to the events of 4 September 2010 and 22 February 2011. Centred on the days and weeks immediately after these events unfolded, the presentation was designed to provide an insight into Christchurch at that time. As a lead-in to the discussion, raw footage of 22 February was played and, while I was prepared for this video, I was unprepared for the manner in which it affected me and how hard it was, nearly five years on, to talk about that day.

The last five years can be viewed as a collection of stories which, despite being connected by a common thread, are all different and unique. Regardless of the time that has passed, there is a raw grief that continues to connect them and always will. Perhaps we will never be able to talk about that period separate from our emotions. While there have been some incredible lows over the last five years, in those first few weeks and months some of that was about making sure the stress of the people who relied on me, emotionally and financially, was reduced. I needed to reassure staff they would still get paid and

that there was still a job for them when all else seemed to be falling apart. While there was, and still is, discussion around the opportunities that were created, at that point it was about the survival of the team and helping clients. It was a different kind of opportunity – one of emotional support and expert knowledge, rather than growth and development. As we moved past the initial grief and devastation I began to feel privileged to be part of building a city - and I still do. For the design and construction industry, this

is the most significant contribution being made to an urban area since Christchurch's settlement over 170 years ago. Development at that time was fuelled by excitement and decisions to establish, rather than fuelled by necessity. We have been given a chance to make a positive mark on the landscape and the future of our city. This is both aspirational and inspirational. While we pause to look back and reflect, it is just as important that we look forward. What will the next five years bring? Five

years ago, both of my girls were at primary school; now my youngest is at high school. Our needs have changed not just as a small family unit, but as a city. Where five years ago companies like Tesla were in their infancy, now we are faced with self-drive technology. Where once we looked at how to deal with cars in the central city, in five years we will be looking at where the cars wait for us, not simply where to park them. With evolving technology, rapid change is inevitable and we need to be innovative and challenged in our thinking. We need to be designing for the future and thinking about “where to” next? Given the rate of change in technology, a number of our decisions may become redundant or obsolete. We need to consider the legacy of the decisions we are leaving behind and shift the focus from convention and the way we have always done things, to the unimaginable. We need to open our minds to the future. The events of five years ago are not only our past, but they are our future. Our biggest challenge is to take the blinkers off and be prepared for change. Anything is possible.

Resilient architect carves his own unique professional path There's a natural metamorphosis that exists in one's career – the twists and turns that build a rich tapestry of experience. Some of these changes are organic and others strategic. The most successful among the professionally ambitious are, in fact, the ones that respond with an open mind to both scenarios.

E

Greg Young is an established, highlyrespected and award-winning architect and his professional path is a little bit out of the ordinary – a reality that has certainly paid dividends for him and his clients. structural engineering and while I was working there I began studying architectural technology before moving across to architecture at a later date. “The approach I took to entering the architectural industry was different, but worked really well. The fact I started out in structural engineering also means I have a lot more structural knowledge than you usually would as an architect.” With over 30 awards – and counting – under his business belt, Greg attributes almost 13 years of great business to great staff. Certainly the capability and passion of the Young Architects team is obvious in one of its recent builds, a property in Worsley Spur. “The joy of that job was in getting the client the most value out of their investment. It was also in the simplicity of the approach taken when addressing all of the demands of a new build. With the house

being right on the plateau of the spur it was extremely exposed, which had its own set of challenges. “It was almost a commercial style of build rather than residential, but we fitted it out like a bach with lots of timber. It 'floats' beautifully over the land so as not to disturb the natural environment it is located in. We were really lucky as our clients were a pleasure to work with, so it was a very smooth process.” Setting an important quality and style precedent for the residential and commercial rebuild of Canterbury, Greg comments: “I think we have an amazing opportunity here for architects – one we hopefully will never see again, for that matter. “For the foreseeable future our city will have a changing face, but it's very exciting. Christchurch city will definitely find its feet!”

A love affair with a classic BMW

“A car has to have soul, otherwise it's just a set of wheels.” In my journey to understand car enthusiasts and their love of vehicles, there is a similar link among all of them - passion for their cars and for the history of the makes. By Nicholas Henare

I

've always been a fan of BMW. I got my first one at 21, so it's easy for me to understand why people love them. The drive, the smell and the details of the vehicles are all simply fantastic. A friend of mine, Jeff Poulter, has the best 1988 BMW M3 I've ever seen. The BMW M-machines are limited-edition, high-performance versions of the 3 Series,

5 Series and 6 Series sedans and are the most successful touring cars in history. They are just the best of the best, and while catching up with Jeff, I got to take this left-handed beauty for a spin. It is a superb car to drive – responsive and smooth as if it had rolled off the production line only the day before. As Jeff says: “a car has to have soul, otherwise it's just a set of wheels.” Jeff has

three children and he's left the M3 in his will to his son, Faron. That's how much this car means to him; it's part of the family. Jeff took a photo of an M3 back in 1988 and he still has that image. It was then that he fell in love with the model and now he has his very own. Isn't that a happy ending to a story? “It may cost a little more to run and it's quirky and a bit temperamental, but really I would forgive it anything.”

ecently I caught up with two great guys, Glynn Jones and Gary Cliff from the Porsche Club New Zealand. Gary and Glynn explained to me that a taste for particular cars is acquired over time. LET THE BUYER BEWARE When you are looking to upgrade your car what do you need to consider? You definitely need to make a list detailing your requirements. Do you need a family car or a sports car; a car capable of towing a boat or caravan; a European car or a Japanese car? Is the way the vehicle drives important to you? I caught up with a motoring expert to ask him the hard questions. Here is his advice.

irst thing you must do when buying a used car is to check if there's any money owing on it. At www.carjam.co.nz you can buy a financial check on what might be owed. It's well worth the $15.90 that you pay”. I definitely agree with that piece of wisdom. I once bought a car privately from someone. The nightmare that followed for the next month was horrific. I wish I'd had the sense to check first. “Look under the car - does it have any leaks? When you drive does it make unusual noises? Have a third person take a look at it. Remember that all New Zealand cars bought from a usedcar dealer rather than through a private sale have a threemonth 5000km warranty so you still have some piece of mind about the purchase going forward. Also find a mechanic whom you can trust, because you know you're going to need them”. What about Japanese versus European? Japanese vehicles are reliable, well put together and simplified. On the other hand, when you buy European you get more technology, a nicer drive, prestige and style. I like a quality drive with a bit of style so I drive an Audi but, at the end of the day, the carbuying guide Dog and Lemon say “You should drive the cheapest car your ego will allow you to drive.”

Putting into students' careers Some University of Canterbury students are taking the fast-track to top-level motorsport careers, with graduates being chosen to design, test and build what could be the world's fastest track car.

S

ince launching in 2013, University of Canterbury Motorsport (UCM) has seen a number of its students race into professional automotive and motorsport engineering careers around the world. Most recently, UCM students have been offered job interviews by professional motorsport teams in Australia following UCM's success in the Formula SAE (Society of Automotive Engineering) competition, but there are also opportunities in New Zealand and elsewhere globally. Faculty Advisor to the UCM team Bruce Robertson says that two University of Canterbury graduates are working for Jaguar Cars in the United Kingdom; another is working for motorsport consultancy Optimum G in the United States; and three have recently begun working with Rodin Cars in Waiau. “The organisation that has started up in Waiau is unique in the world and we are very lucky to have it on our doorstep.” Designing and testing a racing vehicle is no easy task. The UCM team realised this and asked for help from the university's High Performance Computing Centre. That help came in the form of part of the centre's ‘I Dataplex’ system, which enabled the motorsport students to analyse and simulate the complex fluid dynamics of the Formula SAE car in motion.

The UCM team at the recent Formula SAE competition in Australia with the UCM race car. So it looks like students at UCM are in pole position in the race for jobs in the motor vehicle racing industry.
