America’s Thanksgiving Day Parade In D etroit The annual America’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, headed by The Parade Company, is one of the country’s oldest and most celebrated Parades. Presented by Art Van, the announced theme this year is “Walking on Sunshine.” This will be the 88th consecutive year the parade will be marching down Woodward.

It will start at 9 o’clock a.m. on Thursday, November 27. The route will start at Woodward Avenue and Kirby and end at Woodward Avenue and Congress in downtown Detroit.

America’s Thanksgiving Day Parade was founded in 1925 and many people take part in this grand event. It is set-up by many organizations and big companies including Ford as well as more than 4,500 volunteers. Volunteers help with anything from set-up, take-down, building, and promoting a fun and unique experience.

Many South Lyon students take part in this event. They enjoy watching it on television and some make the journey downtown to experience it in person. Numerous students are even performing in the parade.

Senior pom captain, Adelle Lucas, will be participating for her second year.

Lucas said, “I learn a routine with the Mid-

American PomPon All Star team and perform it while walking with almost 200 other All Star pommers.” Lucas, as well as nine other South Lyon pommers, will be performing in the parade with this select All Star team.

Not only do many people participate with this one-of-a-kind event, but the parade is now bigger than ever, including the annual Fifth-Third Turkey Trot, as well as, the Hob Nobble Gobble presented by Ford.

Every year, new residents from all around the state of Michigan attend. The Thanksgiving Day Parade has grown to include more than 75 parade units including loats, marching bands, and balloons.

Senior Krystyna Burchart said, “I enjoy seeing all of the big balloons because they are all so different.”

One of the most known balloons is the clown presented by the Clown Corps. This is a group of corporate and community leaders who use the opportunity to trade their business suits for clown suits to march. Over 2,000 clowns have touched the memories of millions as they make their annual appearance.

Charlie White, have been announced as the 2014 Grand Marshals for this year’s parade.

Tony Michaels, president and CEO of The Parade Company said in a press release, “It has been thrilling to follow these two metro-Detroiters as they made history in the 2014 Winter Olympics and we are excited to celebrate them during America’s Thanksgiving Parade.”

In addition to these, multiple celebrities, including former Detroit Tigers manager, Jim Leyland, are driven through the route and many shows are put on for the audience. These include songs, dances, and passing out candy.

In addition to the performances, many viewers also enjoy the ending of the parade. Here, Santa arrives in his “sleigh” with his “reindeer.”

The mayor of Detroit then, gives the key of Detroit to Santa.

“It is a great tradition and I love it!” Junior, Chloe Hayden said.

America’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will be broadcast live on WDIV Local 4 from 9-10 a.m . and on WJR 760 AM. For more information on the rest of the festivities and events, check out The Parade Company website at www.theparade.org.

South Lyon High School is home to many different foreign exchange students.

Polo-Ike Chukpue-Padmose from Liberia, Chiara Neff from Germany, and Nonoka Nagase from Japan have all moved here from their homes around the world.

They have faced many challenges and gone through changes different from their daily lifestyles and routines on their journey to America. Many of the traditions that we are so accustomed to are not familiar to them.

“Everything is bigger here than it is in Japan,” says Nagase.

All three of the students have mentioned many differences between the education programs in the United States and their home country.

“The school systems are different,” says Neff, “in Germany we only have classes with other students from our grade.”

In Japan and Liberia, students remain in one classroom. Nagase said, “The teacher moves from class to class and the students stay in the same desk all day.” It was also required for Nagase to wear uniforms at her previous school.

Simple holiday traditions in the United States have never been experienced by the foreign exchange students before.

“In place of Christmas, we have St. Martin”, says Neff, “we walk with lanterns and sing to different houses for candy.”

Another important tradition in Germany is the day of St. Nikolaus where people leave their shoes outside to get illed with

candy and other treats.

The foreign exchange students have also expressed the many differences between the foods here and in their home country.

For instance, Neff said, “Here, you have squishy, white bread, but in Germany we eat a lot of dark bread.”

Chukpue-Padmose said, “I ate rice and soup everyday in Liberia, which is very different from here.”

Living in a new country that is not familiar can be very dificult.

Nagase mentioned that the transition here has not been easy.

“Everything is different,” she said, “and it takes a lot of getting used to.”

Neff, on the other hand, disagrees. “It has been no problem and super easy,” she said. Neff is currently a part of the varsity pom pon team and she agrees that it has made the transition much better since she has gotten to know people from different grades.

Although the foreign exchange students are enjoying their stay, they still miss home.

Nagase says, “I miss Japanese food the most.”

Neff misses her family and friends.

“I skype the people I’m close with to stay in touch, and I miss them a lot,” says Neff.

She feels as though she has a whole new life in South Lyon.

“People use things like Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter more here,” she adds, “People also take a lot more selies.”

Even though things are much different, Neff really admires the different types of fashion and music here as well.

Neff inds life here to be completely different from her life in Germany, but Nagase inds Michigan to be similar to her home in Japan.

“Social media is used practically the same in both countries,” Nagase notes.

While in South Lyon, all of the girls plan to make the most out of their stay. Neff is excited to perform with the pom team and compete this winter.

Nagase said, “I am excited to go to prom and attend all of the sports games that I can. I cannot wait to get dressed up for the different dances throughout the year.”

For the rest of their time living in South Lyon, both Nagase and Neff have plans on what they would like to do and experience.

Neff still wants to be able to perform with the pom team at a game.

“I want to get my new uni!” she exclaimed.

Nagase has trips planned so she can do some sightseeing around the United States. “I am going to New York at the end of the year and to Niagra Falls,” she said, “I am very excited for these trips.”

Although South Lyon is different from their home country, the students have expressed how much they are enjoying this community.

“I love the high school, the people, the pom team and my host family,” Neff concludes.

Thanksgiving: People, Places and Food All Wrapped Up in Tradition

by Connor Pogue and Chase Edry It’s that time of the year again. You’re done with the meal.

You undo your belt and head to the sofa. You can’t believe how much you ate. In fact, you may never eat again. But, boy was it GOOD. It’s Thanksgiving, of course. Each year, it’s a feast of traditional foods, which can include turkey, stufing, ham, sausage, mashed potatoes, corn, roast beef, and much more.

Kyle Simpson, a junior at SLHS, has this very kind of Thanksgiving. “I go to my grandmother’s house every year for Thanksgiving and eat a lot,” says Simpson.

The large Thanksgiving meal is not just a one-person responsibility, as most families celebrate Thanksgiving by bringing a dish or two to share.

Each brings some food for the others to enjoy,” Simpson says about his family’s gathering.

Enno Knepp, a senior at SLHS, says, “We typically eat the same food each year: turkey, stufing, you know, generic Thanksgiving food.” For many families, the norm for Thanksgiving is what Knepp describes -- gathering the whole family together to share in a meal and socialize.

Just like how the tradtional foods of Thanksgiving, families also have traditions of where they gather. “Every year my family gathers at my grandparents’ house for our Thanksgiving celebration,” says Knepp. In Knepp’s family, as well as other families, it is tradition to meet at the eldest family member’s house for the Thanksgiving meal.

“We all sit around a large dining table and socialize as we eat,” Knepp says, there are many families who travel across the U.S. in order to gather to celebrate.

But not all families celebrate Thanksgiving the same.

Each family is different with it’s own background, and therefore unique customs one often brought to the Thanksgiving table.

Julia Ochoa-Corante, an SLHS junior, describes the experience of traveling for Thanksgiving by saying, “Each year my family and I all gather in Massachusetts to celebrate with my grandparents who moved there from Chile a couple years ago.” Ochoa-Corante’s family, like many families in America today, have a cultural background that is not distinctly American. With the inluence of her grandparents’ Chilean background, Ochoa-Corante describes her Thanksgiving in a less than traditional light.

“My grandparents try to make a normal Thanksgiving meal, but they usually incorporate foods from Chile, too. I don’t think they fully understand the traditions of Thanksgiving in the U.S,” Ochoa-Corante explains.

Her family’s confusion during their irst Thanksgiving in America was memorable. “My Grandfather, after moving from Chile, did not at irst know exactly what Thanksgiving was. He got it mixed up with St. Patrick’s Day, and it was funny seeing him dressed in all green when we came over,” laughs Ochoa-Corante.

It’s a widely accepted tradition for families to share the Thanksgiving meal by not only bringing a dish, but by traveling to a relative’s house or elsewhere. It is a time for people, places, and food to all wrap up in tradition. Green clothes are welcome; belts are optional.

What Would You Bring Back?

Whether it be TV shows, movies, slang, or clothing, the 90s have become a staple for today’s young teens born in that time period. 90s fashion may have been popular back then, but nowadays not so much. However, many students at South Lyon High School have clothing items from that time period they think should be brought back.

Senior Madi Tomlinson “I would bring back side pony tails because I looked cute in them when I was a kid.”

Senior Bonnie Smith “If I could bring back anything from the 90s it would have to be skorts.”

Freshman Cassie Levine “I would bring back creepers from the 90s because I have a pair and I think they’re really cute.”

Media Specialist Mr. Spencer “Ripped jeans should be brought back because they were the only trend from the 90s worth keeping.”

Junior Ben Dahlbacka “I would bring back parachute pants because Will Smith rocked them, and I’m sure I could rock them too.”

Out With The Old, The Student Section at SLHS Grows

Football has been a tradition here at SLHS for what seems like forever, and the student section is something that goes with it. Even though there has been a student section for a while, there has recently been some new traditions within it.

For the irst time last year, at the annual South Lyon vs. South Lyon East game, the student section all threw baby powder. Over this past football season, our school stuck to this new tradition.

At both the Homecoming and the Northville games this year, the student section showed their love for the football team with the baby powder cheer.

During this cheer everyone in the stands slowly builds up to saying “I believe that we will win” one word at a time. Then once the whole sentence is said everyone throws the bit of baby powder that they have in their hands in the air, and a giant cloud is created over the stands.

Many students, including senior Alyssa Riehle, enjoy this new tradition. “ I think it’s a good way to get everyone at the game excited and involved,” says Riehle. She also hopes that this new student section tradition is able to stick with SLHS for future classes to come.

  FOOTBALL Every year the football team chooses to carry on the tradition of donning the mohawk hairstyle for the playoffs. By having an entire team with the same iconic hairstyle, the football players not only feel more united, but also intimidate opponents.

SWIM It is a tradition for each swimmer on the boys swim team to bleach their hair during the season. By bleaching their hair together, the swimmers feel like more of a team. Then, before the last conference meet, they all shave their heads as a team.



HOCKEY Every hockey season, the South Lyon Uniied Hockey team has a day where they have a “meet the team night.” After a home game, the varsity hockey team goes to a restaurant where the they sign shirts for all of the fans.

  Sports Traditions

Traditions at SLHS don’t end with just dances and assemblies; some traditions were set by sports teams.

Whether it be a pregame ritual or a way of honoring past athletes, these traditions bring the teams together and help form a unique bond that they will never forget.

BASKETBALL Before each game, the varsity boys basketball team says the Lord’s prayer. Basketball team members enjoy doing this because it allows them to bond as a team before the game, and lets those who are religious to ask for guidance in the upcoming game.

WRESTLING It has always been a tradition for higher-level wrestlers to leave their shoes on the mat when their career is inished. The SLHS wrestling team takes this tradition into their wrestling room by hanging the shoes of former wrestlers from the ceiling. This shows the legacy that each wrestler leaves on the team.

Homecoming: Then and Now

by Faith Gearns Homecoming is a popular event in high schools, and South Lyon High School is no exception to this. The earliest recorded homecoming in the South Lyon High School library archives dates back to 1969. But, things have changed over the course of the years such as the parade, the assembly, and the crowning of the homecoming king and queen.

The crowning of the homecoming king and queen has always been a tradition...or has it? Believe it or not, homecoming used to only have a queen and not a king. Students elected a “queens” court of about ive girls. The girls got to pick an “escort” (a date), but were actually escorted in the assembly by their fathers.

At Winterfest, it was the opposite. There was only a king and no queen crowned. The guys would be escorted by their mothers.

The homecoming game is also a big event, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t changed. Every year the queen and king is oficially crowned during halftime of the game. This is something that hasn’t changed; what has changed is how the entire homecoming court is presented. The court used to be driven around the track in convertibles owned by local donors. Now, with the tailgate becoming a new tradition, the court drives around in golf carts.

Activities Page Peppermint Bark Cups 10 oz dark chocolate chips 7 tbsp whipping cream 1 tsp peppermint extract 10 oz white chocolate chips 6 candy canes, crushed 1)Place mini cupcake liners into a mini cupcake baking sheet 2) Melt the dark chocolate chips, whipping cream, and peppermint extract in a saucepan over medium-low heat.

3) Once completely melted, divide melted mixture evenly into the cupcake liners until they’re about half full, as you will be adding the white chocolate chips later on. Place in the refrigerator for 20-30 minutes to set the chocolate.

4) When the dark chocolate is set, melt the white chocolate chips over medium-low heat. Once completely melted, remove from heat.

5) Pour white chocolate over the already cooled dark chocolate. Top it with the crushed candy canes, then set in the fridge for another 20-30 minutes to harden.

6) Enjoy!

1) Using a knife, cut the leaf end off of the strawberries to make a lat bottom 2) Cut a 1/2 to 3/4 inch piece off the pointed end of each strawberry. (This will be the ‘hat’) 3)Place the strawberries so that the larger lat side is on the tray or sheet used to prepare the food.

4)Put a glob of frosting,about 3/4 inch high, on the smaller lat side of the strawberries.

5) Place the smaller pieces that were cut off the strawberries in step 2 on top of the frosting.

6) Put a smaller glob of frosting on the point of the small strawberry pieces, making the hat.

7) Place two chocolate chips on the bigger glob of frosting to form eyes.

8) Refrigerate, or serve immediately and enjoy!

Teachers, Coaches, Leaders Many students have been impacted by a teacher at least once in their life. Whether it be teaching something about school, or teaching them a lesson about life, that teacher’s wisdom will stay with him/her for awhile.

The same principle can be applied to coaches as well. Coaches can help their athletes grow as people through the lessons the sport teaches them. For example, sports teach dedication and conidence.

These characteristics will be very beneicial to have in life outside of school.

Along with dedication and conidence, sports can teach one to be timely and not forgetful.

South Lyon Soccer Coach, Brian Elliott says, “I expect my players to be on time to practice and equipped with their jerseys, shin guards, etc. To me, teaching and coaching instills organization in a person that can be helpful inside, and out of school.”

Teachers and coaches alike have goals for their students and athletes- they push their students and athletes to do the best they can. They want their pupils to succeed

in whatever they set their hearts to, and apply what they’ve learned to real world situations.

At South Lyon High School there are adults that teach classes during the day, and then go coach a sports team after school. This adds an extra workload onto the teachers which can make a schedule very busy.

Freshman Volleyball Coach Rebecca Tincknell said, “I spend a lot of long nights in the classroom because I teach during the day and right after school I have to coach practices, or go to games.”

In addition to the responsibilities of teaching and coaching, they also have duties outside of school that they must take care of.

Varsity Girls’ Basketball Coach Erica Hoffman explains, “It is hard to juggle school work, coaching, and my family. I have a son who is one year old and he is one of my big priorities.”

Teacher coaches dedicate a lot of their time to school and coaching and also manage to balance everything else in their lives.

Another teacher who coaches is Kate

McCallum. She coaches both the equestrian team in the fall and track in the spring.

During the school day, Tincknell teaches geometry, Hoffman teaches English and TV production. McCallum teaches newspaper, English, journalism and TV production, and Elliott teaches biology.

“First I was an assistant varsity coach at South Lyon for two years and afterwards became the head freshman volleyball coach,” says Tincknell. In total she has been coaching volleyball for six years as assistant and head coach. McCallum has also been coaching for six years, at both South Lyon East High School and South Lyon High School.

Hoffman, on the other hand, has been coaching for twelve years. She was very determined to be a role model for girls. “I believe it’s very important for girls to get the same opportunities that boys receive in athletics,” she says.

Hoffman became a coach because she simply missed basketball. “I played college basketball my freshman year and transferred from a division three school to a division one school. Because of this, I did not

get as much playing time, so my junior year of college I coached at Saline High School as a junior varsity coach,” she stated.

Tincknell also played her sport in college. “I played volleyball in college and after I inished my degree I stopped playing.

I wanted to stay involved in the sport so I decided to teach high school volleyball,” says Tincknell.

Kate McCallum said, “It’s nice to see kids both in and out of the classroom. I may have one kid in my class for a year, or not at all, but I get to know them better because they may be involved with extracurricular sports.”

Having this opportunity is a good way to see how a student grows throughout his or her teenage years.

“I also enjoy getting to know the community through coaching. I not only form closer relationships with the kids, but I get to know their parents. I have fun laughing with everyone and hanging out with the coaching staff,” McCallum said.

Overall, teacher coaches are special.

They help their students and athletes grow both in a school environment and on the ield, track, ring, court, etc.

LET’S GO LIONS!- Mark Thomas, coach of the South Lyon Varsity Football Team, is also a teacher at South Lyon High School. During the day he spends his ime teaching geophysical science in the special educaion department. Ater school he spends him ime in the weight room, out on the ield, or in a classroom reviewing past football games. Thomas has been dedicaing his ime to the football team and teaching for 36 years. Mark also has created the annual Red Out football game, which supports heart disease.

Also, in the fall of 2014 Thomas was eleced “Coach of the Week” by the

PBJ Outreach: Another Service Opportunity for Students Cold, lonely, and hungry, many people as close as Detroit are searching for something to eat. PBJ (Peanut Butter and Jelly) Outreach Inc. is a large group of people who volunteer their time and services to provide food, clothing, and community services to the homeless and other people that are below the poverty level.

This takes place in the heart of Metro Detroit every Saturday.

Many volunteers come from a variety of differing backgrounds and ages from communities all around Southeast Michigan, including South Lyon.

The program feeds 250-350 people every Saturday morning in the inner city of Detroit. Whether rain or shine, snow or sleet, the volunteers of this organization still work hard to help those in need.

There are two main meeting spots where they operate: Midtown on the corner of Martin Luther King and 3rd Ave., and Mexicantown across the street from the Most Holy Redeemer Church at 1721 Junction St. There are also chances to help by preparing clothing every Monday and Thursday at 7 p.m. This is held at Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish in Plymouth, Michigan.

Charlotte Wilsher, one of the many volunteers said, “ The PBJ Outreach is a great program that helps those in need, and it really makes you believe that there are great people in this world.”

Joseph Carlson, another volunteer, said, “Helping the less fortunate of the metropolitan area gives me hope that Detroit will rise again.”
