Hello and Welcome to the July edition of ‘The Hampton Viewer’ At the time of writing my editor’s letter this month, summer has at last arrived. My apologies if by the time you read this a week later, it appears to have departed again. Of course with the warmth and sunshine comes growth in our gardens. Although sitting out in the sun for half an hour in mid June was joyous that was only the case when my eyes were shut. When I opened them I saw a winter of neglect in the garden. If you have the same problem, from a tidy up to a re-design, you can find some great local people to help throughout this magazine. As always there are lots of interesting articles in this month’s edition and as usual the magazine provides you with details of lots of local businesses, events and services. Please try to use local businesses whenever you can, and do let them know that you’ve found them in ‘The Hampton Viewer’, as this will help them to know their advert has been a success.

The accreditation's show that we provide a high level of customer service and cleaning standards. They work to raise the status and standards of the cleaning industry and we follow their teachings. The Cleaning and Support Services Association is a group that truly takes reliability in the UK cleaning and support services market seriously. In The Night Sky #28

W

ell hopefully, now we’re in july we’ll start to get some good clear night skies and therefore lots of opportunities for stargazing. The downside is that these good clear nights won’t be until late each night. July is also the start of the main holiday season for most of us and this often means being away from the bright street lights of a city. So it’s a good time to take advantage of the sky. This month I’ve shown an easy navigation tool which basis itself on finding the big dipper or the plough which is a quite familiar part of Ursa Major or the Great Bear. You’ll see the basic star pattern in the centre of the picture & then it’s as simple as following the lines to find other stars or constellations. For example follow the line of the two endmost stars of the plough (the bit that does the actual ploughing) and you’ll come to Polaris, the North Star. Contrary to popular belief, Polaris is not one of the brightest stars in the night sky, it’s actually 49th in the list. But it is the brightest that is nearest to the north celestial pole. It’s not exactly at the pole but close enough. It is predicted to be on the pole on 24th March 21.00, but I’m guessing most of us will miss that. From then it will actually move

12

away from the pole and in about another 12,000 years Vega will be considered the North Star. This is because of the wobble of the Earth’s axis or precession. You now have another point with which to navigate; if you imagine a line from the second star on the handle of the plough through Polaris for about the same distance again you will find the constellation Cassiopeia (known as the Queen of Ethiopia) which looks like a W or an M depending on the time. Cassiopeia lies almost completely within the Milky Way and if you’re in a dark enough area you should be able to see the spectacular star fields quite clearly. Unfortunately, you won’t get much opportunity to see the Milky Way in the UK as there is just too much ambient light in most places. But if you’re in the middle of a campsite surrounded by dense forest and find a large clearing you might be lucky. You can find a bigger version of this map on most websites but this one was on http://astronomy.starrynight.com/content/ free-astronomy-teaching-resources

Come Fly with Us!

F

lyCB was established in 2003. The managing director / chief flying instructor Bob McMaster has trained over 150 people many with no previous flying experience – to become safe and competent pilots. FlyCB use the latest high performance aircraft the EV-97 Team Eurostars. Most people are unsure if they will like flying and that is why FlyCB offer trial lessons as a first step. Trial lessons make an unusual and unforgettable gift for Christmas, Birthdays,

Anniversaries or a special ’thankyou’ for friends or work colleagues. A gift voucher enables them to have their first hands-on lesson and take the controls of a EV7 TeamEurostar, under the experienced supervision of a FlyCB instructor. This will be an experience that they will always treasure. A certificate of experience will be provided as a memento of this unique experience on completion of their flight. FlyCB uses EV97 TeamEurostars, the next generation of ultralight aeroplanes styled for comfort, designed to out-perform a traditional training aircraft and operate at a fraction of their running costs. With a cruising speed of 100 mph they are loved by experienced pilots on ambitious touring trips to the continent and by weekend flyers alike. FlyCB provide tailored training packages for a National Private Pilots Licence (NPPL) – to enable a person to qualify as efficiently as possible. Bob’s systematic training process has been developed over 20 years of flying. He is also a CAA examiner allowing to test as well as train students. Art Week at Thorpe Hall The opportunity to paint in beautiful surroundings will attract local artists to the 10th annual Art Week at Thorpe Hall, Peterborough in August. The week – August 5th-9th - is organised to raise funds for the Sue Ryder Hospice based at Thorpe Hall and this year will boost the £6 million appeal to build a new hospice in the grounds. Artists are able to book day workshops in watercolours and acrylics in a variety of subjects including portraits, landscapes and flowers. For those who prefer craftwork, one workshop will enable participants to make a fabric bag in a day. There is also the chance to paint in the hospice gardens without tuition for a small donation.

Volunteer fundraiser and Art Week organiser Linda Dalton said: “We love to see our regular artists return each year but are always pleased to welcome new people to the event. The atmosphere is always great – plenty of learning and lots of fun. We are so grateful to the tutors who give their time so generously and have helped to raise close to £25,000 over the past nine years. We need the funds more than ever now for the new hospice.” Booking forms are available at Thorpe Hall, or email thorpe.fundraising@sueryder.org or call 01733 330060.

The Whinge My Wife Doesn’t Understand Me!

N

that way I won’t be able to build an audience. I have to build a following and then take them with me.

Last month I wrote about language and how wound up the BBC were getting about changes in grammar education standards; this month I wanted to continue that theme, slightly.

And this is part of the problem, because my wife is a partner in a baby magazine which sells advertising space to manufacturers and service providers in that industry. So when she asks me what my product is and where my market is I can explain because I understand (after all my MBA training, I can spout management BS like the best of them). However, this is where the foreign language comes in, because I understand exactly what I’m doing and why, but she doesn’t.

ot in that way, I’m not having a mid-life crisis. I’ve already had one of those - see previous whinges for that information. But basically because I’ve started speaking a foreign language. Well, not quite, but my wife thinks so.

I left my job of over 22 years (and my only real job since leaving school) at the end of last year and have set up my own business. I’ve started doing something I’ve always wanted to do but never had the time or resources. Now I’ve been given the opportunity and grasped that bull well and truly by the horns. The problem comes when my wife tries to explain to someone else exactly what it is that my business is. If I give you my brief and perhaps you’ll start to see her problem: Through the lens art. Taking still and moving digital imagery and transforming it through creativity into art beyond the boundaries of conscious thought. So there you are, it’s not really photography and videography, but that is involved. It’s not just messing around with photographs in photoshop although that is also involved. At some point I intend to make my own films but they won’t be the sort of thing you’d see at the cinema. I already produce what I describe as “vanilla” photographic art but it will end up being more than that, much more. But I’ve found that I can’t just launch into the full-blown end product because

18

This isn’t because I can’t communicate and it isn’t because she can’t understand it’s just simply because we both work in very different markets, with very different customers and very different products; and we both have a very different understanding of reality. When we both worked for the same employer things were different - we had a common language and usually a common enemy. But, this isn’t actually a problem because we both use each other to sound out ideas. Which makes us both change our approach to try and get the other to understand, it doesn’t always work but it does make us think a bit more carefully. However, I am fairly certain that our daughter is completely befuddled by the whole thing and takes it down to a very simple level - to her I take photos and videos. That’s it. Simple! © 2013 Stephen Farringdon http://stephenfarringdon.com http://www.MetamorpheusLtd.com

Are Migraines a pain for you?

W

hatever the reason behind a migraine, food intolerance, stress, lack of sleep‌ the cause is irrelevant. For so many they come without warning and the most debilitating symptoms of nausea, flashing lights, on top of a head that feels like it might explode are just not a welcome occurrence. Life for migraine sufferers stops, for the duration of the migraine and as it takes no account of surrounding, circumstances and what is going on at the time, I should imagine a sufferer would do anything to prevent an episode happening. At Touch Of Healing, there are several ways we can look at the migraine condition to alleviate its symptoms. The muscles of the neck, harbour a great deal of tension. The tension may not be visible externally as anything tangible, but the weakness in the neck muscles are none the less there and can express through to tighten membranous structures in the head and create imbalances in fluid pressure, which can then feed through and create pressures around the orbit of the eye, and tighten the nerve tissue causing the feeling of nausea. Myofascial Release Therapy, Trigger Point Therapy and CranioSacral Therapy are all effective tools in combating Migraine Pain. For more information email shehnaz@touchofhealing.co.uk or if you suffer migraines and would like to make an appointment call shehnaz on 07710756771. 22

‘62 Love Me Do Oundle’s New Retro Restaurant!

A

s if their six coffee shops don’t keep them busy enough, Phil Gilbert and Karen Gilbert, owners of the ‘Beans’ coffee shops, have opened an early 1960’s retro diner restaurant in the centre of Oundle. In what is probably the best shop front in the town, ’62 love me do has already become THE destination in the area for the very highest quality 6oz beef burgers – made in Seven Wells butchers just two doors away – and all the beef is from cows grazing literally a mile and a half at Seven Wells’ farm in Stoke Doyle! Now that’s low food miles….. To compliment the beef burgers, other burger options being supplied by Seven Wells are the chicken breast and lamb, while they also supply the tasty sausages in the hot dogs. There is also a frankfurter option for the hot dogs, and delicious veggie and fish burger options to. There’s also a choice of delicious BIG salads, and the regularly-changing specials board.

The desserts are also worth a trip in itself, and of course ’62 offers the same highly popular Beans milkshakes known and loved by thousands! There’s an ample choice of other non-alcoholic drinks, including some really tasty cloudy lemonade! The wine list is minimalist choice, but high quality, from the town’s wine merchant – Amps. Plus there’s a choice of Peroni Italian bottled lager, or an excellent bottle conditioned light beer brewed specifically for ’62 by Castor Ales, one of Peterborough’s local micro breweries. ‘62’s interior is a fantastic and colourful addition to the local area, with the bright red, white and black dominating the interior, complimented by lots of various items from the 1960’s dotted around the place. The lava lamps are particularly eye catching! The service is first rate, with really helpful and accommodating waiting staff, and you have the comforting knowledge that you’re eating fresh, tasty, local produce which cannot be offered by the large restaurant chains……

In all, ’62 love me do is a fantastic addition to our choice of eating out within the area – and it’s only a 15 minute drive away!
