Each summer, we are incredibly fortunate to share our beautiful campus, expert teachers, and attentive counselors with both new and returning Summer Studio campers and their families. Summer Studio allows us to extend The Langley School’s philosophy – the belief that academics and social-emotional learning can coexist and should be nurtured in equal measure – into a fun, joyful summer environment for our community. Knowing that children’s interests and learning styles vary, you’ll find that Summer Studio provides a variety of offerings and learning experiences so that students can build their weeks accordingly and get to know their individual preferences. We hope your child will explore new activities and mix+match different camp offerings from service learning, academics, and science to the arts and sports. This brochure includes our comprehensive 2017 summer offerings. If a class is full, we will move to a waitlist and contact families if space becomes available. We recommend registering for another class to reserve your spot and will accommodate switches if you come off the waitlist. If a class is under-enrolled, Summer Studio reserves the right to cancel the class. Advance notice will be provided in these situations two weeks prior to the start of class, and the Summer Studio team will help families find alternative class options. Amazing Race: USA Edition Grades 2-4
Afternoon Adventure Grades 1-3
This activity-filled class is full of variety and new adventures each week. Based on our “Friday Frolics” theme, campers explore different cultures through art, games, sports, and cooking. Activities include cooking up chicken taquitos, creating a “Tako” (Japanese kite), and writing Chinese characters through calligraphy. Campers rotate every 45 minutes to a different hands-on activity that fosters teamwork and confidence. They are grouped based upon their skill and ability level. At the end of each week, the groups come together for a full-class assembly featuring a special event and prizes.

Amazing Race: South American Edition

Join us as we “travel” around South America, participating in team challenges in a warm and supportive environment while learning about the cultures of five different South American countries. There are Olympic-sized challenges in Brazil. In Bolivia, teams work together to construct skyscrapers out of recycled materials. We build volcanoes in Guatemala, visit the rainforest in Peru, and so much more.

Join us as we “travel” around the USA, participating in team challenges. Campers are split into groups and visit different states where they perform group challenges in a warm and supportive environment. In Hawaii, teams are challenged in a tropical relay race, while in Alaska, campers go ice fishing to see how many fish they can catch for their lunch.

Never have food challenge reality shows been so popular, and “Chopped!” is a favorite here at Tiny and Gourmet Chefs! We like it so much we decided to base a whole weeklong camp on the concept. Our version has the added twist of focusing on different cuisines every day of camp. Each day, the Tiny and Gourmet Chef campers are presented with a basket of three or four ingredients which reflect French, Italian, Mexican, Asian, and “All-American” cuisines. Using those ingredients and working within those cuisines, they challenge themselves to make mouthwatering specialties and traditional favorites while exploring new ingredients, tastes, and combinations.

Come learn a variety of popular circus art forms from around the world such as juggling from ancient Egypt and plate spinning from China. The class introduces acts including the
tight wire, stilts, acrobatics, rolo bolo, and unicycling along with physical comedy (clowning). Campers discover that anything worth learning takes practice, and with a positive attitude, they can learn almost anything. Improvements in hand-eye coordination, balance, and self-confidence are some of the noticeable benefits. Come learn the tricks of the trade, and wrap up the week with a big show on Friday!

Kid cooks, bakers, and chefs have joined the ranks of elimination-style cooking contests! In this exciting cookoff, the class is divided into rotating teams with each team creating recipes that are judged by the instructors in a blind taste test. Sometimes the teams create the same item, and compete head to head, while other times they create different recipes within a theme such as Snack Attack or Sweet and Savory Pies. With the many offerings at the grocery store, it can be confusing to decipher between what is healthy and what is in healthy “disguise.” In this camp, we empower students to own their health and make their own decisions regarding food choice. We examine labels and packaging and focus on whole, plant-based foods. Campers prepare a variety of foods that are not only nutritious, but also delicious! Get ready to be wowed by roasted sweet potato fries, chopped salad with green goddess dressing, and whole wheat couscous salad with pesto and snow peas. Healthy never tasted so good!

Pack your bags and join us on a USA “road trip!” Campers check out some of the funkiest festivals in America on this week-long adventure. Service Learning: The Community Partnership Project

At Langley, the Community Partnership Project provides a meaningful way for students to address genuine community needs through enriching service learning. Students are given an opportunity to view the multifaceted needs within their community and how community partners and organizations are able to make an impact through service with visible outcomes. Each day, students join with a different community partner or organization, assisting in activities such as preparing bagged lunches and sorting non-perishable food items. Upon successful completion of this class, students receive a service learning certificate for 15 hours.

Awesome Adventures
Do you want to have an exhilarating adventure? This destination camp takes participants to all of the best amusement parks in Maryland and Virginia, including Kings Dominion, Six Flags, and Central Park Fun Land. Let’s scream on the floorless steel roller coaster, the Dominator, get wet on the Pipeline Tower, and race go-karts at Central Park Fun Land. Come have a thrilling good time!
This exciting adventure takes campers throughout Virginia, Maryland, and DC. Each day, campers have an unforgettable time as they race go-karts on the Autobahn, navigate a treetop ropes course, and compete on a Ninja warrior obstacle course. Come have a fun-filled adventure!

Chesapeake Bay & Tributaries Grades 5-8
Help restore the Bay. Campers explore the Chesapeake Bay and its tributary rivers in Virginia, Maryland, and DC to discover the relationship between human activities and their impact on water quality. During this field experience, campers canoe through freshwater to learn about the Bay’s ecosystem and how they can make a difference. Then they hop aboard a work boat to conduct science experiments, including oyster dredging, water-quality testing, and biological sampling. This week includes a day of fishing and an interactive environmental mystery game designed to enhance scientific knowledge.

Biotech: Shaping Our Future

Biotechnology is the use of cellular and biomolecular processes in the development of new technologies and products that help improve our lives and the health of the planet. Using the MIT App Inventor, campers learn to create their own functional apps for Android devices. They design and program Android game apps with features such as animated sprites and collision detection and also learn to use smartphone sensors to control their games. Software/platforms used are Android Device, Windows 7 and 8, Chrome, and MIT App Inventor. Campers do not need to bring their own Android tablet or smartphone as class models will be available. We start by creating a woodcut print, then proceed in the artistic process of creating cyanotypes, photograms, and solar prints. Rhythms of Percussion Grades 1-3
Follow the rhythms of percussion in this fun, hands-on class. Young musicians play a variety of percussion instruments and explore their different sounds, learning how to add both color and excitement to music. A Week in the Life of Our Favorite Authors

On the road to fame, campers walk in the footsteps of their favorite authors as they begin their journey toward self-expression. They put themselves in the shoes of three published authors – Jeff Kinney (Diary of a Wimpy Kid), Patricia Polacco (Thunder Cake), and Chris Van Allsburg (Jumanji) – creating stories, imagining characters, and connecting experiences by using the creative writing processes employed by these authors. Over the course of the week, campers are immersed in and inspired by art, experiences, and literature. They envision stories in their minds, create humorous characters, and pull from their own experiences to write enriching stories.

Intro to Debate

Did you ever think it would be fun to be a lawyer? Have you ever wanted to change a person’s perspective or opinion? Come learn the art of crafting a winning argument. Campers discuss issues such as school uniforms and whether or not teachers should assign homework. In this class, participants not only learn the skills needed to debate, but also have an opportunity to debate with other campers while discovering how one voice can actually change the nation.

For each trail, students design a map, take pictures, develop directions, and create a set of problems for their peers to solve. Each trail might cover or review topics such as proportional reasoning, geometry, percentages, and algebra. Cognitive Soccer Training
Art of Scoring Goals
Although technique and athleticism are important qualities, the “thinking players” stand above the rest. In the midst of the game, a player’s brain is accomplishing the incredible feat of multitasking, tracking, anticipating, timing, strategizing, reacting, problem solving, and executing. Therefore, it’s crucial for youth players to develop their brains as well as their bodies. This class incorporates brain-centered training into cognitive challenges that provide traditional, technical, and tactical training, with activities designed to ask campers to multitask and solve soccer problems on the field. Participation in this class can be half-day or full-day.

Scoring goals is the most important and difficult skill in soccer, requiring solid technical skills as well as the ability to get into scoring positions. The Art of Scoring Goals program focuses on developing these skills by incorporating a variety of finishing activities and scoring-related cognitive training. Campers take part in shooting drills that focus on gamerelated scenarios, creative scrimmages, and much more. While we can’t guarantee anyone will win the Golden Boot award, we can ensure that players improve their ability to score goals and take on a more significant role in their team’s attacking play. Since goals are scored by players in different positions, the program is suitable for all soccer players, not just forwards.

Marcus Ginyard Basketball Camp
Tennis: Game, Set, Match
Langley’s Multi-Sport Camp is a fun way to introduce young athletes and sports enthusiasts to a variety of sports in a safe and supportive environment that emphasizes teamwork, sportsmanship, and fitness. This class combines some of the best playground games like Sharks and Minnows and Four Square with some of the all-time favorite traditional sports like basketball and golf. With so much variety, no two days are alike. Campers are divided into groups based upon their skill and ability level. This will allow all campers to have fun while still being challenged at their level. Participation in this class can be half-day or full-day.
Join Marcus Ginyard, now in his fourth year at Langley, for a week of fun on the hardwood. Ginyard is a 2010 graduate of the University of North Carolina’s prestigious basketball program and a 2009 national champion. Participants engage in fundamental development, skill improvement, and rounds of pick-up games during this coed camp. Ginyard’s team teaches skills to help athletes excel regardless of ability, and boys and girls looking to improve their game are welcome.
This exciting class introduces campers to the sport of tennis through the USTA QuickStart Tennis program. It is designed to teach the basic fundamentals of all the strokes, develop rallying skills, and play in a safe and fun environment. All equipment is provided.

DEPOSIT & PAYMENT
WAITLIST
To reserve your child’s spot, a non-refundable, non-transferable deposit of $150 per week, per child is due at the time of registration and is deducted from the total amount due. Full payment is due on or before May 1, 2017. If final payment is not received by May 1, the space will be forfeited. After May 1, payment is due in full at the time of registration. A fee of $25 will be charged for any returned checks.
Due to the extreme popularity of many of our classes, waitlists do occur. To place your child on the waitlist, you must register online for the specific class’ waitlist. There is no fee for being on a waiting list, nor is any credit card information required. We cannot take waitlist registrations or hold spots over the phone. As spaces become available, they are filled in the order in which they were registered online.
The Langley School Summer Studio program reserves the right to charge the credit card on file for outstanding balances. Upon completion of your registration, you will receive an e-mail confirmation along with a copy of your statement.
Should a space become available for a waitlisted class, you will be notified via e-mail and/ or telephone to confirm interest in the available spot. If you decide to enroll your child in the available spot, you will need to complete your registration by paying the deposit and/or full payment online (please see our class changes, cancellations, & withdrawals policy). There is no penalty should you choose not to enroll; we will simply notify the next family on the waitlist.
CLASS CHANGES, CANCELLATIONS, & WITHDRAWALS
REQUIRED FORMS
Space permitting, class changes may be made before registration closes for a camp week. A $25 fee will apply to each change in a camper’s schedule, plus the difference in cost between the classes.
Virginia School Health Entrance Form Campers who do not have this form on file will not be permitted to participate in Summer Studio. If your child attended The Langley School for the 2016-2017 academic year or is a returning camper from the 2014, 2015, or 2016 season, you will NOT need to resubmit this form unless an update has been made.
Parents/guardians must inform the Summer Studio Office in writing if they are withdrawing their child from any class. If a cancellation is made at any time before May 1, 2017, all payments, minus the non-refundable deposit, will be refunded. No refunds will be granted for withdrawals after May 1, 2017. Deposits are non-refundable and non-transferable between classes, siblings, and other programs offered by The Langley School. The Langley School Summer Studio reserves the right to cancel any program at any time due to insufficient enrollment. If a class is cancelled, a full refund will be granted and we will make every effort to assist you in finding an alternative class. In cases where the cost of the new class is greater than the class being replaced, the price difference will be charged to the camper. All changes are based on availability and grade requirements. There are no refunds for absences and there is no provision for make-up classes. No refund will be granted in the event of dismissal for inappropriate or unsafe conduct.

Proof of Identification In accordance with the Commonwealth of Virginia childcare center licensing requirements, a parent/guardian must present legal documentation in person. This information must be provided before the first day of Summer Studio classes. Acceptable forms of proof of ID include a certified copy of a birth certificate, birth registration card, and passport. Please do not mail original documents or send copies via fax. If your child attended The Langley School for the 2016-2017 academic year or is a returning camper from the 2014, 2015, or 2016 season, you will NOT need to resubmit this form unless an update has been made. Medication Administration If prescription medication is required, parents/guardians must submit a Medication Authorization Consent Form completed by a parent/guardian and physician.

CAMP EXTRAS Extend the Fun After-Care: Extend the Fun is open to campers in grades K-8 from 3:30-5:00 p.m. daily. Campers may attend Extend the Fun for the week or on a drop-in basis. The weekly fee for Extend the Fun is $80. To participate, campers must register through their online account. The drop-in fee for Extend the Fun is $18 per day. Children not picked up during afternoon carpool will be sent to Extend the Fun and parents/guardians will be charged accordingly. Drop-in fees will be charged after the date of attendance to the credit card on file. Transportation: Summer Studio offers cluster-stop bus service in McLean, Great Falls, North Arlington, and Vienna for a nominal fee. Busing options are morning, mid-day, afternoon, or round-trip. Registration is for the entire week. To participate in camp busing, campers must register through their online account. Families choosing to participate are contacted one week prior to their start at camp to confirm the exact location of the cluster stop as well as drop-off or pick-up times. In the event of your child’s illness or absence, please notify the Summer Studio Office as soon as possible. There is no refund for cancellations or absences on the bus. See “Camp Extras” on our website for pricing. Lunch: Summer Studio offers a boxed lunch option for those students who attend a full day of both morning and afternoon classes. Lunches must be purchased at least 48 hours in advance.
