Do Not Miss Out . . .

There is More to Celebrate! need these holidays! We are grateful to have them - do not miss out celebrating them! Besides, they are also a lot of fun, and who (of all ages) wants to miss out on the fun? If you are reading this article after the holidays have happened and you did miss them this year, then make a point to celebrate them next year.

By Jason Krane Interim Executive Director of the Jewish Federation of Ocean County

By Rabbi Robert Rubin Temple Beth Or Brick, NJ

ollowing Yom Kippur Services, I gathered with my family to enjoy some of my favorite traditional Jewish foods. I always looked forward to eating bagels, lox, herrings, and other salads that many enjoy during break fast. These fine delicacies and the thoughts of the Jewish Federations’ upcoming Jewish Film Series got me thinking about the concept of the culture of being Jewish. These foods are part of Jewish culture. Many Jews eat these foods not only during break fast but also during other holidays throughout the year. Over the past few weeks there has been a short video circulating the internet called the “Jewish taste test.” The video features non-Jewish individuals as they taste traditional Jewish foods, including gefilte fish, kugel, chopped liver, and rugelach, among others. While I thought that the interactions and facial expressions of the people trying the food for the first time was comical, I realized that there are so many foods that are a part of our history. As a Jewish community we all have memories of someone in our family cooking these foods and the precious looks on young children’s faces when they try cholent, tzimmis or shchav for the first time. If you haven’t seen the video and are looking for a laugh today, search for “The Jewish Food Taste Test” on Youtube.com. Along with food, humor is a staple in Jewish culture. It stems further back then the history of the Catskill Hotels and the “Borscht Belt,” it appears in Midrash and in the Torah. From Jack Benny, Mel Brooks, Joan Rivers, Jerry Seinfeld and Adam Sandler these fine comedians have a history of telling a story by putting their Jewish lives in their jokes. When I was younger I had the chance to visit some of the Catskill hotels, and I remember sitting in the lounge watching these comedians doing their standup routines. While I may not have understood some of the jokes, I saw the smiles on everyone’s faces and I knew they must be funny. Continued on page 13

The New Year has come! 5775 has begun! Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur were just the beginning. They are crucial times of reflection - about us, about our society and about our world. They are known in Hebrew as Yamim Noraim (Days of Awe). The ten days from Rosh Hashanah (1 & 2 Tishrei) through Yom Kippur (10 Tishrei) are known in Hebrew as Aseret Yemei Teshuvah (Ten Days of Repentance). However, where would we be without food that is harvested and rain that supplies water? We would no longer be able to live. We need to celebrate having food to eat and water to drink and survive. We need to appreciate our place in the world of nature and pledge to take care of it better. We need to recognize our dependence on God and on each other to live our daily lives. We need to give thanks for what we have and for Torah to guide us in life. Following Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur come the Jewish holidays of Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah. We

Sukkot celebrates the fall harvest and our survival in difficult conditions like the 40 years of our ancestors’ wandering in the desert from Egypt to the Promised Land. We give thanks to God for the food that we have and get inspired to share that food with others through hospitality (inside and outside of the Sukkah) and food bank donations. Biblical Sukkot of thousands of years ago is the basis for the American Thanksgiving of a few hundred years ago. On Shemini Atzeret we include a special prayer for rain without which we could not exist. Through the concept of Atzeret L’chayim (Gathering for Life) we rededicate ourselves to protecting this earth and not destroying it through global warming or nuclear war. We recite the Yizkor Memorial Prayers to recall those who came before us and transferred the world to us and to our care. On Simchat Torah we sing and dance with the Torah and celebrate our ancient and modern connections to its holy teachings. Many give candy or other sweet treats to children so that they can literally taste the sweetness of the holiday celebration and messages. There is also a call for marking October Continued on page 3

Is It Worth Keeping Up with Technology in Later Adulthood? By Deidre Stamos Lonza MSW Intern, Jewish Family & Children’s Service

T

here is little debate over the fact that technology is pervasive in our daily lives. Just walk into your local coffee shop and marvel at the number of people with their noses glued to their cell phones and computer screens. As technology advances, our dependence on computers is undeniable. Telephones, television, security systems are all being linked to computer networks. Love it or hate it, technology has become an integral part of our day to day functioning. At the same time that advances in technology are exploding, our population is aging. According to studies done at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, people aged 65+ years represent approximately 13% of the population and this number will increase to 22% by the year 2030. Moreover, the fastest growing #16628 HLevin Ad_4.9x5.53 11:16 AM subgroup within the older8/28/14 population is

over the age of 85. Recent data shows that although the use of computers and the Internet among older adults is increasing, there is still an age-based digital divide. AARP reports that about 62 percent of people over the age of 75 still don’t own a computer. Resistance to jump on the technology bandwagon occurs for lots of reasons. Learning new things takes longer as we age. So why would a person want to invest the time necessary to become tech savvy when you could be spending your time doing something you enjoy? A younger person puts in the effort to stay current because they believe these are skills they will need down the road. Older adults tend to focus on tasks that matter now and, therefore, their motivation to become acquainted with the latest and greatest tech devices is low. So the question arises, “How important is it that I keep up with technology?” The reality is, being able to use technology puts older adults at an advantage.

Page 2

LevinCyphers Attorneys at Law

The Canadian Journal on Aging looked at the relationship between Internet use and psychological wellness in late adulthood. Older adults who use the Internet report greater feelings of overall satisfaction and self-confidence than those who do not. Also, they are less likely to report feelings of isolation and loneliness. Another reason to stay current with technology may be more practical. As Baby Boomers enter their senior years, there is a growing desire for one to age in one’s own home safely, independently, and comfortably for as long as possible. This trend, known as aging in place, is an effective way to preserve the quality of life for older adults. As technology continues to impact the medical field, experts predict that doctors will soon rely on computers to remotely monitor people with chronic health problems like diabetes. Such advances will delay or eliminate the need for many to enter expensive residential health care facilities, thus allowing older adults to

24-25 as Local Food Shabbat to raise our awareness of local food needs and resources (or the lack thereof). As we work to sustain ourselves through eating and our own consumption of food, we rededicate ourselves to making the world more sustainable for everyone in the processes of food production, transportation and consumption. These Jewish holidays also reinforce for us our connection to the Land of Israel. At the end of Yom Kippur we state “L'shanah habaah beerushalayim” (Next Year in Jerusalem). Sukkot is the fall harvest festival connected to the seasons in Israel and was one of the three Pilgrimage Festivals (along with Pesach and Shavuot) for Jews to come to Jerusalem. The prayer for rain on Shemini Atzeret is tied to the beginning of the rainy season in Israel. On November 9, 2:00-4:00 p.m. an interfaith event “Standing with Israel: An Afternoon of Information and Inspiration” is being held at the Theatre of the Grunin Center (Building 12) of Ocean County College (use Parking Lot 2), College Drive, Toms River. Come and join others in the Jewish, Christian and general community to learn about, be inspired by and show our solidarity with Israel. There are videos, music and some personal testimonies that you should hear. There is no charge for the event and no fundraising will be conducted. For more information see page 13. Jewish Films come to Ocean County

T

he Jewish Federation of Ocean County announces the Jewish Film Series sponsored by The Jay and Linda Grunin Foundation. Join us on November 3, 10, and 24, at The Jay and Linda Grunin Center for the Arts at Ocean County College. Jeremy Grunin, Executive Director of The Jay and Linda Grunin Foundation said “My family and I are excited to be able to support Jewish Federation in their efforts to bring meaningful Jewish art to Ocean County, this time in the form of film. Our commitment to the arts coupled with our involvement in the local Jewish community made this a home run for our Foundation. We look forward to making many more projects accessible locally through Federation and other organizations.”

Throughout the month of November, the community will have an opportunity to see some of the best Jewish films being shown throughout the country at film festivals such as ours.

of young Jewish-American comedians to hone their craft and become worldwide legends. We are excited to have a Q & A session following the film with the writer/ producer, Lawrence Richard.

If you are looking to laugh, you will not want to miss When Comedy Went to School, on November 3, at 1:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Why are there so many Jewish comedians? Comedy Went to School answers this question with an entertaining portrait of this country’s greatest generation of comics – the generation that includes the likes of Jerry Lewis, Sid Caesar, Jackie Mason, Mort Sahl, and Jerry Stiller, all of whom make appearances in the film, telling jokes and telling their stories. The Catskill hotels and bungalow colonies provided the setting for a remarkable group

Everyone has memories of their favorite deli growing up or the smell of that large whitefish your parents came home with during the holidays. On November 10, at 1:30 p.m. you will not want to miss the story of the famous appetizing store, Russ & Daughters in the film The Sturgeon Queens. This film traces four generations of a Jewish immigrant family who created and continue to own Russ & Daughters, a Lower East Side lox and herring emporium that survives and thrives. The documentary features an extensive interview with two of the daughters for whom the store was named, now 100 and 92 years old respectively, and interviews with prominent enthusiasts of the store including Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, actress Maggie Gyllenhaal and chef Mario Batali. The Sturgeon Queens chronicles everything from the Russ family history to Josh Russ Tupper and Niki Russ Federman, the founder’s great grandchildren, who run the store today. Followed by Q & A with director, Julie Cohen.

and an impressive cast of Israeli top talent give bravura comic turns in Hunting Elephants, a bank heist caper and comingof-age tale. We are delighted that this film is co-sponsored by the World Zionist Organization and will be followed by a discussion with Youth Movement Shliach, Gil Laniado. The last film of the series on November 24 at 1:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. is Bethlehem, a story of a relationship between a man and a boy. This is a story of the complex relationship between an Israeli Secret Service officer and his teenage Palestinian informant who almost have a father/son attachment. Shuttling back and forth between conflicting points of view, the film is a raw portrayal of characters torn apart by competing loyalties and impossible moral dilemmas, giving an unparalleled glimpse into the dark and fascinating world of human intelligence. The film is co-sponsored by the World Zionist Organization and followed by a discussion with WZO Shlicha, Tova Birnbaum. The Jewish Federation is excited for the opportunity to work with Jeremy Grunin and The Jay and Linda Grunin Foundation and thank them for their support with this project. orty-three families, members of Ocean of Love, whose children have cancer will benefit from the 2014 Smiles for Life Campaign, sponsored and supported each year by Dr. Ron Rotem, a Toms River dentist and member of the national Crown Council. Gary Schiavone, an executive board member of Ocean of Love for more than 21 years, accepted $1650.00 on behalf of the nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. Ocean of Love, Toms River, assists families with such nonmedical expenses as monthly gas cards that help defray the cost of driving to and from hospitals, parking fees at hospitals, mortgage payments, utilities, food, and even babysitting. Schiavone said, “Dr. Rotem has been donating the fruits of his labor every year for as long as I can remember. I have only praise and thankfulness to him and his staff for the annual donation he makes to Ocean of Love.” Each year, Dr. Rotem sets aside 100 percent of his fees for teeth whitening during the annual Smiles for Life Campaign, March 1 through June 30. Through the national Smiles for Life Campaign, Dr. Rotem has donated more than $50,000.00 to charities, especially Ocean of Love.

“What a wonderful opportunity to do something for yourself and, at the same time, help families who need support,” said Dr. Rotem. “It’s really a win-win for everyone.” Since 1998, The Smiles for Life Foundation, the charitable arm of the Crown Council, has raised more than $30 million for children’s charities across North America because members of Crown Council dental practices have agreed to donate the cost of professional tooth whitening during the Smiles for Life campaign. Dr. Rotem graduated from NYU College of Dentistry in 1991. His practice focuses on cosmetic dentistry and conscious sedation. Dr. Rotem belongs to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. He is affiliated with the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, NJ Chapter of the Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the Dental Organization of Conscious Sedation, the International College of Cranial Mandibular Orthopedics, the American Dental Association, the New Jersey Dental Association, Monmouth/Ocean Dental Society, and the Academy of General Dentistry. Dr. Rotem is an active member of the Crown Council. He is also a member of the Jersey Shore Business Network, Toms River.

Holocaust Survivor Luncheon By Latzie Tober MSW intern, Jewish Family & Children’s Service

T

uesday October 7th, Temple Beth Am Shalom in Lakewood was bustling with the activities of the Café Europa event. This program was funded by the Conference on Jewish Material Claims against Germany to give Holocaust Survivors an opportunity to connect, socialize, build supportive networks and enjoy the entertainment provided. The participants enjoyed socializing and

connecting with friends over a tastefully prepared lunch. They were then treated to a dynamic accapella concert by the V’Samachta Music Group led by Chaim Resmovits. The feelings of enjoyment and happiness were palpable in the air as the sounds of singing and clapping rose from the audience. The Café Europa event was a wonderful way to lift the spirits of the Holocaust survivors in time for the Festive Jewish Holiday of Succot.

STANDING WITH ISRAEL

An Afternoon of Information and Inspiration

Sunday, November 9 2:00-4:00pm

During the Café Europa, Holocaust Survivors luncheon last week, the guests were entertained by three musicians who enlightened the crowd with Jewish songs of today and yesterday. The old tunes made them smile ear to ear and everyone left the event jubilant and dancing. During our Jewish Heritage Day at the BlueClaws we started the day with a Klezmer band, and at every Jewish wedding and Bar/Bat Mitzvah we enjoy the dancing of the Horah. Food, music and comedy are just some of the beginnings of what makes our Jewish culture. To quote a famous “philosopher,” Tevye the Dairyman, from the famous film Fiddler on the Roof, it is because of our traditions that makes us who we are today. Please join us at our Jewish Film Series, sponsored by The Jay and Linda Grunin Foundation where you can see films about Jewish food, comedy and more. For more information please see page 4.

In Wartime, Caring for Elderly Israelis JDC When Hamas rockets began raining down on southern Israel this summer, JDC stepped up - with its “Networked Seniors” ensuring critical social interaction and support continued for the most vulnerable elderly Israelis caught in the crossfire. Networked Seniors is one of the signature initiatives of JDC-ESHEL, the Association for the Planning and Development of Services for the Aged, which has transformed the quality of life available to Israel’s seniors since its inception in 1969. The virtual day care center for seniors features brain and memory games, guided discussions about current events and literature, and workshops focusing on communication skills, assertiveness, and coping with loneliness. Networked Seniors uses Watchitoo, an Israeli video conferencing program. During this summer’s crisis, it increased its presence, operating in a special and enhanced format to reach hundreds of elderly Israelis throughout the country.

At the height of the war, Networked Seniors operated daily activities five times a week, conducting nearly 40 sessions over a 20-day period. Special crisis programming included a daily morning meditation and guided imagery, as well as afternoon programming including current events, film discussions, nutrition tips, and strategies for supporting an ill spouse during an emergency.

COMFORT, FIT & QUALITY Confortable shoes are part of the good care your feet deserve.

“The program provided people with a chance to have a restorative break from stress and from being glued to the news without having to leave their houses,” said Anat Shuster, the project’s coordinator. “And many were afraid to leave their homes out of concern about possible red alerts.” JDC’s crisis response was made possible by JFNA’s “Stop the Sirens” campaign, among other donors. JDC’s global programs are made possible by the generosity of our supporters.

In an average lifetime, a person’s feet will carry them between 150,000 and 200,000 miles. That’s six to eight times around the earth. And for the entire distance, our feet will be our levers, balancers and shock absorbers. It makes good sense to keep them confortable and healthy
