DepEd rolls out ‘ Catch-Up Fridays’ nationwide to

DepEd Memorandum No. 001 series of 2024 dated Jan. 10 outlined the implementation of Catch-Up Fridays.

Under the new initiative, DepEd will focus on operationalizing the National Reading Program for the first half, while the second half will center on fostering values, health, and peace education. Furthermore, there will also be a Homeroom Guidance Program every Friday.

“The initiative is integral in the National Reading and Mathematics Programs which are critical subprograms of the National Learning Recovery Program (NLRP)”, DepEd memo explained.

Pursuant to Department of Education’s Regional Memorandum No. 1047 s. 2023, Guiuan National School instigated the conduct of the First Quarter Portfolio Day, November 11.

Celebrating students’ successes and accomplishments during the first quarter, the Portfolio Day included ParentTeacher Conference and Feedback Giving, Showcase of Learner’s Outputs and Performances and Distribution of Learners’ Progress Report Cards.

According to DepEd, Catch-Up Fridays was designed to “strengthen” foundational, social, and other essential skills among learners to achieve the goals of basic education.

With this leap, DepEd expects students’ abilities in reading, critical thinking, analytical, and writing to be enhanced.

Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte claimed that the implementation of catch-up Fridays will be the key on producing excellent students by modifying the country’s educational system.

Catch- up Fridays in Guiuan North

The implementation of catch-up Fridays in Guiuan North District covered the subjects Math, English, Values Education and Health. “Hitun aga more on reading with comprehension and mathematics. Pagkakulop hit catch-up Friday ginpapa-integrate and values education ngan health,” said Guiuan North District Supervisor Ma. Corazon Garado in an interview with the TGG staff.

She emphasized that the program works in accordance to its goal if it is done consistently.

“Kun itun na program isusustain, waray rason nga dire magkakamay ada hin positive result. Kinahanglan kada bata imo imomonitor it progress since nag start an implementation.

Kailangan dire ig undang, kailangan hin consistency,” the Disctrict Supervisor cited.

In the same manner, teachers also visualized the results of the program in accordance to its goal.

“Magiging willing hira magbasa. Naipapakita nira it ira love pagbasa kay natatagan hira hin chance hit pagbasa hit books nga love nira,” highlighted Anthony Oliverio, a Grade 6 Teacher from Lupok Central Elementary School.

Issues in the Implementation

The preparation for learning materials was a struggle for the teachers.

“In our case, preparing the reading materials because the DepEd did not provide the reading materials is an additional burden to us.” Stated Emelita Oliverio, a Grade 5 teacher in LCES.

Students’ learning retention also hinders the program to achieve its goal. “Mayda mga bata nga dire na naiskwela kay barasa la ngan barasa especially an mga magluya. Siyempre nahadlok hira pabasahon so naabsent hira,” Anthony Oliverio said.

A shift for the new program

Although there are many struggles, the teachers managed to adapt the new implementation of the DepEd.

“So far, naka adapt na hira, maaram na hira. The mere han pagstart han catch-up Friday, diba diruderetso? So na shock anay an mga teachers… You have no choice but to adapt, although there are challenges, but then narecover man it challenges and so far, maupay it results,” Ma. Corazon Garado stated.

There are techniques they used to make the implementation more manageable.

embracing the rule will help everyone embraced the changes.

“Embrace it, whether we like it or not, we should embrace the new schedule, or curriculum, whatever changes we have to adapt everything,” she said.

Students do appreciate the effort of the DepEd to strive for improvement.

“If they are implementing for the betterment of us students, then I’ll gladly support them,” said Janine Regajal a Grade 8 student from GNHS.

They are looking forward for the advantages they can acquire from the program.

210 completers recognized

Meanwhile, NLC camper Jovit Barredo cited that through the program his prowess in the three learning areas has improved.

“Through learning camp, it honed my skills in English, Science and Mathematics. The program helped unleash my potentials and has given me the advantage to understand concepts

“I had the opportunity to embark on a thrilling moment,” said Cabides.

ceremony where they expressed elation and congratulations to the 210 completers.

The NLC is a voluntary program for both students and teachers. Teachers who participated in the said program are granted with service credits, certificate of recognition and incentives subject to accounting guidelines and procedures set.

According to Ms. Coreen Francis Garado, a teacher-adviser from the Grade 7, “ Attending such activities especially portfolio day, mas maiinform iton parents from the adviser themselves regarding hiton behavior ngan academic performance hitun students.”

She further stressed that attending meetings will give parents an avenue to be informed with the school policies, issues and concerns.

“ At the same time maupdate ha mga school policies, or issues and concerns,” she said.

Considered as a Culminating Resource Activities/Performances, the Portfolio Day encouraged schools to put exhibits of students/pupil products across subjects or learning areas. Learners may also do exhibition of their performance in the different subjects as evidences of their learning attainment of performance standards.

Former Region VIII Director

Dr. Ramir Uytico first introduced Portfolio Day in 2017 during the launching of the Regional Portfolio Day at Catbalogan City. As an effective culminating activity, it was later adopted by all schools in the region parallel to DepEd “Policy Guidelines on Awards and Recognition for the K to 12 Basic Education Program.”

Pinned in the DepEd calendar, the next Portfolio Day is slated on February 10, 2024.

“Ano ang gusto nating makita? Mga batang makabansa. Mga batang matatag, marunong magbasa, at makabansa. Hindi pwedeng paulitulit nalang pero wala naman tavong nakikitang pagbabago nakikitang improvement sa ating mga learners,” she uttered.

“Sa pag-iimplement nito, mabibigyang diin ng mas importante yung tool subjects kaysa sa iba. Katulad sa Math at reading, kase actually dapat bigyang diin kase marami ang non-numerates at non-readers,” said Lilia Garado, a Grade 9 Teacher o Guiuan National High School. According to an elementary teacher, the program can encourage children to engage more on reading.

Likewise, according to Master Teacher Jocelyn Padel of Guiuan NHS, one of the reasons of the poor results in GNHS is that most students are not attending the catch-up classes.

“Most of these nonreaders are those who are not attending the classes or the catchup Fridays. Sad to say somehow we cannot see yet the better result of the implementation of the program,” Padel uttered.

Guiuan National High School Mathematics Department had pulled off its two-day InService Training (INSET) for the Numeracy Enhancement Program to brace for the Catch-up Fridays implementation this Third Quarter or Second Semester.

Said event highlighted numeracy rationale, timelines, evaluation and monitoring, definitions, importance, literacy and numeracy in the K-12

“Budget of lessons and may ada gihap an tama nga paggamit han time frame. Pwede man gihap ig adapt an peer tutoring,” said Marilyn Abuyen, a grade 9 teacher from GNHS.

According to Lilia Garado,

“I think the benefits is that through this, the negative qualities we have can possibly be treated. It can make us more better students,” told Daiserie Candelaria, a Grade 11 student from the school.

Sa pag-iimplement nito, mabibigyang diin ng mas importante yung tool subjects kaysa sa iba. Katulad sa Math at reading, kase actually dapat bigyang diin kase marami ang non-numerates at nonreaders...

Curriculum, guides for numeracy implementation, numeracy tools, Integers’ discussions, teaching strategy for numeracy in the elementary grades, orientation for Catch-up Fridays and demonstration teaching.

According to Mathematics Department Head, Tranquilino Dagaño, Master Teacher I, results revealed that as of 2nd Quarter using the Quarter Enhancement Regional Numeracy Test (ERUNT) of GNHS, there are 307 non-proficient students

from Grades 7 -10 that are subject for intervention.

He added that the In-service training in teaching Mathematics for the Catch-up Fridays aims to train and orient the non-mathematics major teachers in facilitating the program.

“This program will capacitate the teachers in the implementation of Catch-up Fridays simply because we invited speaker from an elementary school whom helped us to gain knowledge in teaching mathematics, and also

there are strategies that we can employ in teaching like the use of American Institute and Research tool, which will help us elevate the level of non-numerate students”, he added.

Meanwhile, Day two of the training featured the discussion of Mr. Robert Terencio, Master Teacher I of Lupok Central School on Concrete Representation Abstract (CRA) Approach as a ploy in teaching fundamental operations in the elementary grades.

National Values Formation Council boosts moral recovery program among Guiuan High studes

To arrest the moral decay of the Philippine society, the Values Formation and Spiritual Transformation Council Incorporated(VFSTCI) of Camp Crame, Quezon City campaigned for ‘moral recovery’ among Guiuan National High School students, February 1.

Hinged on Presidential Proclamation No. 62 or Moral Recovery Program, its thrust was to transform the image of every Filipino

to be God-centered, people empowered and prosperous national community living in unity and justice.

The national campaign was participated by Filipinos of all ages from all sectors of the society, accounting issues such as Premarital Sex, Abortion, Smoking, Drugs, and personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

According to the National Lecturer and Team Leader Leonardo Pedrosa Jr., the orientation was needed since morality is

gradually disappearing. “Nagiging habubu na an moral, kinahanglan na hin recovery”, Pedrosa said. The seminar caused an impact to students that made them realize and reflect on their mistakes, also making them start and having a stronger relationship with God.

“Nakaka-realize ini haira ngan nakaka iinfluence ghap na magbuhat hit tama. Nak nahibaroan na habang aanhi pakita ha kalibutan sikapon naton nga pirmi magbuhat hin

Gender Inclusivity in Guiuan High: Is It Ready?

Discrimination is one of the factors that opposes gender inclusivity. It is a form of unjust or prejudicial treatment for a certain group of individuals. It is still rampant in some schools here in the Philippines. Some people are still unable to embrace the diversity of each individual. Some were imposing a bias and prejudice towards the inclusivity of the grounds of gender, race, class, sexuality, and disability. In this state, are some of the public schools truly open to all students, regardless of their gender, expression, culture, religion, social status, or disability? What is the issue of inclusivity, and why does it need to be discussed?

Inclusivity is a concept that has gained significant recognition and importance in recent years. It refers to the practice of ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or any other characteristic, feel accepted, valued, respected, and included in all aspects of society. It is about creating a sense of belonging and equality for everyone, and eliminating any form of discrimination or exclusion.

Inclusivity also involves the promotion of empathy and understanding. It requires individuals to recognize and challenge

their own biases and prejudices, and to treat others with kindness, dignity, and respect. It is about fostering a culture of acceptance and celebration of differences, where everyone feels comfortable expressing their true selves without fear of judgment or rejection.

At Guiuan National High School, transgender people and other members of the LGBTQIA+ community are now allowed to wear uniforms that they are comfortable in. In addition, they are also free to grow their hair, although permission from the authorities is needed,

particularly from the school principal, Sir Benjamin Campomanes, the School Head of Guiuan National High School. But is gender inclusivity enough to fully call and acknowledge Guiuan National High School as an inclusive school?

“For me, the program launched is not yet enough, but I am happy because in my five years of studying here, Guiuan National High School has made progress in terms of being inclusive,” said Jacob Guimbaolibot, a member of the LGBTQIA+ community who is also studying at Guiuan National High School.

Progress starts little by little, and it’s a good indication that Guiuan High School is heading in that direction and that the institution is open to gender inclusivity. Many students are still waiting to be fully accepted and to freely participate in anything without fear of ridicule or judgment. Inclusiveness in school is not just a goal; it’s a mindset that fosters empathy, nurtures diversity, and inspires limitless potential in every student. Let’s open the door to a much freer and happier school for everyone.

Boosting school’s security with appropriate measures

Aschool is an administrative unit dedicated to and designed to impart skills and knowledge to students. A school is organized to efficiently deliver sequential instruction from one or more teachers. School is a student’s second home, and one of the most important institutions plays a pivotal role in a community as a whole.

The Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary and Vice President Sara Z. Duterte led the launching of the MATATAG Curriculum on August 10, 2023, and will be implemented come school year 20242024. The agenda of the curriculum covers not only a focus on the development of foundational skills such as literacy, numeracy, and socio-emotional skills but also the INTENSIFICATION of the formation of learners’ values and character development in adherence to Good Manners and Right Conduct (GMRC) and Values Education Act. This move is especially relevant in today’s society, considering the rampant misbehavior cases of students in schools and the big gap between how elders and educators were treated before compared to how modern-day learners treated them.

Many students are still waiting to be fully accepted and to freely participate in anything without fear of ridicule or judgment.

It is with big hopes that the MATATAG Curriculum will be able to instill among students the essence of good manners and right conduct (GMRC), allowing them to view GMRC not just as a subject in the curriculum but an essential aspect of education they need to embody in their value system. Common problems among students faced by schoolteachers include failure in submitting assignments/projects on time, verbal aggression, speaking foul languages, inattentiveness, physical aggression, and bullying other students, as supported by a study conducted among Grade 7 students in Maranatha Christian Academy of Manila in the year 2022. If, as young as Grade 7, such misbehaviors are already observed, Filipino learners really need this reform in the basic education curriculum.

Furthermore, it is also with big hopes that the agenda of the MATATAG curriculum, through the intensification of values and character development, will teach learners how to

practice their rights appropriately and not use them as an excuse to demonstrate aggressive behavior in school and inform parents that they are partners with the teachers in this journey of holistically educating their children. This means reprimanding them if necessary and not tolerating their misbehavior. In a systematic review of international literature conducted by PerryHazan (2021), it is noted that modernday students’ rights perceptions are intuitive, meaning their perceptions are not grounded in legal rules but in students’ personal insights, potentially leading to misuse of these rights in the classroom.

Since the implementation of the MATATAG Curriculum is yet to kickstart next school year, the possibility of a positive outcome for the Philippine education system is also yet to be seen. But with the concerted efforts of all education stakeholders, it will eventually come to light. Hopefully, this will become the Filipino educators’ driver in educating the youth, most notably in morals, because quoting the words of Franklin D. Roosevelt, “when you educate a man in mind, not in morals, you educate a menace to the society.”

Meanwhile, critics of the MATATAG Agenda, particularly the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT), call this “premature” and posit that this revision of K-10 will be as problematic as the K-12 curriculum without a proper budget to support plans for the education sector. However, DepEd Secretary and VP Duterte assured the public of the department’s “commitment to this colossal endeavor – unfazed by the unthinkable.” Duterte asserted that DepEd, through her leadership, will bravely take on this challenge of sustaining actions in implementing the MATATAG.

It is with big hopes that the MATATAG Curriculum will be able to instill among students the essence of good manners and right conduct (GMRC), allowing them to view GMRC not just as a subject in the curriculum but an essential aspect of education they need to embody in their value system.

As the world grapples with the ongoing challenges of ensuring safety in educational settings, keeping our school institution safe, along with all the teachers, staff, and students residing inside, is of the utmost relevance, not only because of the value of education and human life but also for other important reasons for security fencing, to provide a safe learning environment by safeguarding its staff and learners.

One of the key considerations in implementing school security measures, including fences, is to strike a balance between safety and maintaining

a welcoming and open educational atmosphere. While security is essential, an overly restrictive or fortress-like environment can inadvertently create a sense of fear, isolation, and division among students and staff. Schools, however, must ensure that security measures do not compromise the nurturing and inclusive nature of the learning environment. Moreover, it is crucial for schools to conduct thorough risk assessments, engage with stakeholders, and tailor security measures to their specific needs and challenges. Collaboration between educators, parents, students, and local law

enforcement can lead to the development of effective security strategies that prioritize safety while promoting a sense of community and belonging.

School security is a complex issue that requires a nuanced and thoughtful approach. While school fences can be part of the security infrastructure, they should be implemented in conjunction with other measures to strike a balance between safety and inclusivity. By fostering a culture of safety, collaboration, and open communication, schools can create an environment where students can thrive academically and socially

while feeling secure and supported.

Boosting school security and safety in schools is a big and shared responsibility that requires the collective efforts of all stakeholders to create a safe and nurturing environment for our future generations.

Furthermore, as students being part of the school, we should also extend our contribution in our little ways by means of, first, being aware of all the security and safety measures, and second, applying them in our daily routine to avoid undesired incidents that might occur everywhere.

What we need: Discipline in the system and the students

Discipline is the capacity to drive yourself to do something you don’t want to do, in order to attain desirable results. Did we succeed in achieving our goal, or does it just cause our learners to slow down?

The Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) states that our country ranked sixthlowest among 81 countries. It simply implies that our students lack discipline and focus on study. This perennial problem shows that a significant majority of students fall below the proficiency level required for full participation in society and contributing to nation-building. It is confirmed by Alex Sucalit Jr., the Department of Education’s (DepEd) Senior Education Program Specialist and PISA

Focal Person, that due to the stagnancy caused by the pandemic, ultimately baking huge impacts causing student inconsistency. Additionally, most of the youth chose the streets over classrooms. However, it is not just the learners who are to blame, but also the educational system of the Philippines. They are hooked on this tagline, “No child must be left behind.” The tendency is that even though the learners cannot read, write, or solve mathematical problems or analyze scientific concepts, they just go with the process

to elevate the learner to the next level, even if they are not yet qualified. This tagline of the Department of Education, which is adapted from the system of the United States of America, is a connotative juncture: in order for a particular learner to attain a good result in PISA, a learner should engage in remedial instruction, teachers should make home visits to learners, and learners must be inclined their study in such a way that a discipline can be established on their part as learners in the educational process. Learners must exert effort to do well

in their studies. Hence, the Department of Education reforms the educational system of our country to improve learner’s discipline, particularly in their studies.

Moreover, without discipline among youth, their future will be as disastrous as a fire. Then, Dr. Jose Rizal’s thoughts will fail, as he stated that youth is the hope of the future.

Students are, we the youth are future of our country, generate wiser choices. Our country’s future is dependent in our actions.

Schools, however, must ensure that security measures

do not compromise the nurturing and inclusive nature of the learning environment. However, it is not just the learners who are to blame, but also the educational system of the Philippines.

Indispensible impact of leaders at school

The role of student leaders in schools is indispensable. It plays a pivotal role in shaping the minds and hearts of their co-students. They are the voice of students, agents of change, role models for their peers, and future leaders of the society to which they belong.

As a critical part of the educational system that has a profound impact on both individual students and the wider school community, student leadership in schools is more than just a position or title. It entails great responsibility and accountability in the position of schoolwide range where they belong. Student leaders are the heart of a school. They are the bridge between the student body and school administration and serve as a channel for their peers. They bring students’ concerns, ideas, and perspectives to the table and ensure that the school’s decisions are in the best interest of all students. It is a two-way communication that fosters a sense of belonging and inclusiveness in the school, making students feel

valued and heard.

Additionally, student leaders are advocates for change. They are the ones championing causes close to the hearts of their peers, whether it’s mental health awareness, environmental protection, or diversity and inclusion. They are initiators of school-wide campaigns, organizers of events, and promoters of positive changes. Their passion and commitment often inspire their peers to join them in making a difference and fostering a culture of active participation and civic responsibility.

Moreover, in terms of their role in the school community, student leaders are also essential role models. They embody the school’s values, promote academic integrity, and demonstrate exemplary behavior. Their

commitment to personal growth and excellence sets a powerful example for their peers and encourages them to strive for the best.

But perhaps the most significant impact of student leadership, in my view, is on the leaders themselves. Experience in leadership, organization, communication, and problem solving provides these students with invaluable life skills.

It shapes them into confident, resilient, and responsible individuals and prepares them for future challenges in the real world.

Furthermore, as we continue to recognize and support student leadership, we are not only improving our school, we are also investing in the leaders of tomorrow.

Their passion and commitment often inspire their peers to join them...fostering a culture of active participation and civic responsibility. “

Online or offline?

What do you prefer: e-classrooms and e-library, or traditional classrooms and libraries? Nowadays, because of the quarantine and pandemic, we all have used e-classrooms and e-libraries as an alternative to actual classrooms and libraries. In a world where everyone is internet-dependent, nothing beats a good old book paired with a four-cornered room that instills education.

The difference between online classrooms and libraries and their real-life structures is that e-classrooms and e-library users lack human interaction. We humans are social creatures; we need to interact with someone every now and then. Especially students, they need someone as a role model to know how to act in person because too much internet time can cause people to be socially awkward.

Moreover, I know for a fact that no one can deny the good smell of books. Online libraries can’t produce that smell, so that itself is a big no-no for me. There’s a lot of things that e-library can’t replace with an actual library, such as the sound of a gentle rustle when turning a page and making unexpected friendships there. Additionally, many people label libraries as their sanctuary, a place for them to rest and maintain their sanity. We are now in the digital age, and reading isn’t limited to books. The e-library holds incredible power. Imagine being able to access any type of book anytime and anywhere. Although it wouldn’t be useful anymore if there’s no internet connection, it seems like it will be covered by Republic Act 10929, or

the Free Internet Access in Public Places Act. Similarly, e-classrooms possess convenience in education. Building a classroom is already expensive enough; imagine the overall cost of building a school.

But, if I’m asked to pick between e-library and e-classroom or library and classroom, I’d pick the actual library and classroom over and over again.

Friendly reminder: Strong support achieve golds

Yung registration, pagkain at transportation hindi na dapat pinoproblema ng bata, that is the duty of the school head---a statement uttered by none other than the second highest post in the Division.

In the statement by ASDS Atty. Calick D. Arieta, it is candidly and profoundly expressed that journalism should be accessible to everyone, not just those who can afford it financially, but also to those who have the desire and passion to pursue it despite limited resources.

However, the reality is that financial constraints burden students, hampering their ability to compete effectively, diverting their focus from training, and impeding their progress.

Many campus

journalists face financial challenges when participating in interschool competitions, covering expenses such as transportation, meals, attire, and even registration fees. Consequently, journalists find it difficult to fully commit to journalistic events, knowing that financial obstacles hinder their advancement in training and competitions.

Financial barriers should not prevent students from showcasing their journalistic skills in competitions.

Campus Problems: Creating a Safe Place for Learners

The school is thought to be the second home for students. It should make them feel safe and secure. It is not just a place for learning but also serves as a place for fostering relationships. But behind this, are cases of problems insisted, just like bullying. Do you think the school has a responsibility to make their students feel safe amidst this crisis? What happens when a place you thought was safe is the opposite? Are you still in a safe place?

As a student, my viewpoint is NO, because it will surely affect the totality as a person. Bullying is not a joke, it’s a serious case that seeks to harm, intimidate or coerce you as a person.

Every educational institution has the responsibility of developing a generation of competent, lifelong learners and creating a safe place for learners.

bully classmates. While the others confront their bully classmates.

On the other hand, teachers, supposed to be as second parents of the students, should play a great role in making the school a safe place. But, some of them are fond of making their students feel inferior, to the point that they become hated. They are strict in terms of deadlines for outputs or projects, view the students’ opinions as irrelevant, and give a truckload of activities. On our part as students, we view that the school before was thought to be a place of fun learning, but now, it turned into a battlefield of deadlines and activities, because of the role of the teachers as an extreme disciplinarian to the students. It comes to the point that they hurt and affect the student’s mental well-being. This is a form of bully that teachers were not aware that they were already crossing the line of the students.

gender-sensitive, safe, and motivating environment, I may suggest making reforms that cater to these problems.

One way is by making rules regarding problems that may cause an unpleasant experience for the students.

An example of this is creating a rule about bullying, or if there is already one, looking into it and finding ways the school can improve it to ensure a safe and bullying-free environment.

Another one is creating a safe place for students, where they are free from problems and can just relax or focus on their studies. Whether it is inside a classroom or the campus, having a place where students can relax can prove beneficial to their overall development.

Indeed, the School as the second home of students, has the responsibility to keep them, including the teachers, safe. Remember that education serves as the key to the future.

There’s a lot of things that e-library can’t replace with an actual library...
...it’s important to use AI as a tool to enhance journalism, not replace it.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming the world of journalism, and campus media is not exempt from it. While AI offers exciting new tools for storytelling and content creation, don’t forget that it shouldn’t replace the human touch, especially in the world of journalism.

are a major reason why campus journalists struggle to represent their schools effectively. Nevertheless, school administrators should find ways to support their campus journalists in competitions. They should take proactive steps by incorporating financial provisions into the school’s Maintenance and Other Operating Expenses (MOOE), covering expenses such as supplies, transportation, and other necessities related to participating in press conferences and competitions. Financial support for training and competitions is crucial and should not be overlooked.

Assisting campus journalists in reducing financial burdens not only offers support to individual students but also benefits the school as a whole. When campus journalists achieve success in competitions, they not only build their personal reputation but also elevate the prestige of their school.

...the reality is that financial constraints burden students, hampering their ability to compete effectively... “ “

AI offers a lot of advantages to humans that may contribute to the world of campus journalism. It can sift through vast amounts of data to uncover trends and patterns that would be difficult for humans to identify, leading to more data-driven and informative campus journalism.

Moreover, AI-powered tools can assist with tasks like transcribing interviews, generating captions for videos, and even creating basic news articles, freeing up time for journalists to focus on more creative and analytical work.

However, AI cannot replace the critical thinking skills that are essential for good journalism, for AI cannot compare to a good journalist’s mind. Journalists need to analyze information, ask questions, and identify bias.

Since AI algorithms are only as good as the data they are trained on, if the data is biased, then the AI will also be biased. It’s important for journalists to be aware of these potential biases and to take steps to mitigate them.

Campus journalists should be responsible about how they are using AI and ensure that their content is always accurate and unbiased.

The future of campus journalism in the age of AI is bright, but it’s important to use AI as a tool to enhance journalism, not replace it. The human element of journalism—curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking skills—will always be essential for producing highquality content that informs and engages students.

On the other hand, students view school as an escape from their problems at home, because they believe that whenever they leave home, they instantly change their mood when they are in school. They believe also that one factor in making a school a haven for students is having good relationships with other students. But it turns sometimes into a hurtful, teasing or worse a lifethreatening place. Some students are bullied by their co-students. Bully students play hurtful words and aggressively dominate or intimidate their classmates and friends. They display acts of body shaming and namecalling. And this behavior is often repeated and habitual. However, they just don’t react when someone says or does something hurtful. They just walk away and ignore the

Rice inflation skyrocketing

The inflation rate has curbed, but is it still enough? This compelling question wanders through my mind as I’ve been updated by the Department of Finance (DOF) on how the administration of Filipino President Ferdinand Bongbong Marcos Jr. faced and overcame one of the biggest challenges in 2023, which is the inflation rate.

The said inflation rate

decelerated from 8.7% in January to 4.1% in November, but not all sectors were affected by the deceleration of the inflation rate, and one of these sectors is one of the Filipinos’ top needs—rice.

According to Rappler, a Media and News Company, prices of goods accelerated at a slower pace for the four straight months from January to May as food prices continued to stabilize, but, in a rice-loving country like the Philippines, the downtrend is not easily felt as global prices of the staple coupled with weather concerns have pushed up domestic prices. Rappler also stated that while the

...not all sectors were affected by the deceleration of the inflation rate, and one of these sectors is one of the Filipinos’ top needs—rice.

overall trend shows inflation is tapering off, such as fuel inflation, which decelerated from 1.5% to 0.7%, and transportation inflation, which deflated from 0.4% to -0.3%, the story for rice is different, as Mapa explained that the global price of rice was significantly high in January compared to the first two quarters of 2023.

In PSA’s graph of retail prices from January 2022 to January 2023, it can be seen how the inflation in rice accelerated for different types of rice, approximately jumping by ₱10-₱11 in the last 2 years. National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Secretary Arsenio Balisacan also stated that the

government is now closely monitoring rice prices and will provide appropriate policy recommendations to President Ferdinand Marcos to ensure stable and affordable prices for commodities. Also, in the presidential campaign in 2022, Marcos also promised that he would lower the price of rice to ₱20.

Let’s be aware and focus on a bigger picture where we should not just focus on one specific thing, as we should also grant time, effort, and power to other sectors and departments, as giving attention to the underlying sectors will help us build a successful and greater economy.

Exploring Calicoan Island

After a rough week at school, my friends and I decided to hop on an early morning adventure to the island of Calicoan. I’ve passed Calicoan several times before; however, this time’s different since we’ll have to stop at every tourist spot on our way.

‘The journey begins here’, said to myself as I took my first breath of the calm, ocean-scented air while looking down at the bluish-green waters of Pagnamitan Bridge. The sea water shimmers under the sunlight, and I couldn’t help but be mesmerized by how the sunlight danced on the surface of the crystal-clear waters. The sight of it is quite captivating, so I went down and dipped my hands into its cool embrace. I vividly feel the gentle caress of its touch, which is so refreshing and invigorating.

Eager to explore other sights to behold, we continue our adventure. We found ourselves in awe and nostalgia as we felt the cool air, listened to the chirping of birds, and enjoyed the greenery of Veteran’s Park. The picturesque view of the well-

maintained park ensures that the memory of our veterans will live on in the hearts and minds of those who visit.

After I took a relaxing morning at the Veteran’s Park, we made our way to the hidden gem of Calicoan Island—the Calicoan Surf Camp. Arriving at the Calicoan Surf Camp, we were greeted by the sound of the waves. Waves rise and fall in a rhythmic dance, a testament to the perpetual heartbeat of the planet. As I walked down the shore, I was welcomed by the powdery-white sand stretching as far as my eyes could see. I turned and stared at the ocean before me—a vast expanse of shimmering blue that emerges seamlessly with the horizon. In its embrace, I find peace, inspiration, and connection to nature.

I sat for a while and stared at the beauty that lay before me. The waves’ rhythmic cadence soothes my soul. Occasional seabirds glide effortlessly overhead, the echoes of their cries blended sweetly with the symphony of waves crashing against the shore. The salty taste of air fills my lungs, invigorating my soul with a sense of freedom and possibility. Right then and there, I know this is a moment I will forever keep.

After having lunch, we rode again to our next destination, the miraculous church of Sulangan. Steeped in history, blessed with natural beauty, and imbued with the warmth of its people, this place offers a glimpse into the soul of Calicoan Island.

We took the right turn before entering the Sulangan Bridge. We are excited to see the pristine beach resorts of the place, perfect for a leisurely stroll and a lazy afternoon spent at the beach. We saw people enjoying their banana boat ride;

children carelessly running around and building beautiful sand castles; foreigners sulking under the sun’s heat; teens taking different selfie angles; and couples taking an intimate afternoon beach walk. Indeed, Sulangan beach resorts are best for family, lovers, and friends’ get-togethers. Satisfied with the scenery, we drove again. It was almost 4 o’clock in the afternoon when we reached the Sulangan Bridge, a vital lifeline linking the coastal barangays to the mainland. From dawn to dusk, sunlight dances upon its surface, casting reflections that shimmer like liquid silver. Built with architectural grace and engineering prowess, the bridge represents far more than a mere physical connection. For Sulanganons, the bridge is the gateway to opportunity, prosperity, and progress.

The centuries-old Saint Anthony of Padua Shrine stood high and mysterious. The church is a testament to the enduring faith of the community. Moreover, the miraculous church offered a glimpse into the town’s cultural heritage, along with its unique local products that symbolize the rich culture of the place. The enduring warmth and hospitality of the people persuade those who visit to come again.

Relieved by the week’s burden, we drove back to the mainland of Guiuan. Today’s memories of relaxing beach views, vast greenery, and architectural marvels linger within me. It truly was a thrilling experience that fosters a deeper appreciation of the island’s culture and history. In Calicoan Island, the spirit of adventure shines bright, inviting all who visit to wander and be amazed by the beauty of this tropical haven.

Hidden Monolith Treasure of the Immaculate Conception Parish

History, Beauty, and Resilience

In the midst of the most trying moments, there will always be a place of solemnity and calmness. A place where there are four great walls evidently made for worship and adoration. It is definitely what we call the Church, which is a sanctuary where faith belongs. It is a spiritual abode where the sincerest prayers and confessions are being heard. It is the place where the longings of sacred and surrendered hearts are filled. It is the place where the shout in the faithful hearts of loyalty to the Good is manifested. It is a dwelling place where the love for heavenly peace is realized.

The Church of Guiuan, also known as Immaculate Conception Parish Church, is one of the oldest and most famous churches in Eastern Samar and a testament to its history, beauty and resilience. It is a sanctuary that has withstood the tests of time and even in the havoc of the nature’s wrath. It stands as a place of worship, and also a place that stands as a living chronicle of Philippine history in a cultural heritage.

Toilsomely constructed during the Spanish colonial period in the late 18th century, the Immaculate Conception Church bears witness to centuries of Philippine history. It is

made of tiled- floors where oneself is drowning with steps to heaven. A place that is filled with monumental ornaments that can be a sight all over and mostly brings out to the hallowed heart of all souls of the people. Its walls echo the footsteps of Spanish missionaries who spread Catholicism across the archipelago. It was made with edifice-structured stones that flourished for the testimony of faith of the Guiuananons. It was also built with a mural of stones, flaunting its fine furnishings, where the shines of aesthetically-detailed constructions for divine worship were behold. The intricate carvings and artistic expressions found within the walls

serve for the sole purpose of display and also as a testament to its beauty and resilience. It was partially damaged but it was restored in 2014. Its beautiful baroque architectural style remains present after the restoration. Its stones remained intact, standing tall and firm for its purpose even in the midst of the effects the Typhoon Haiyan, or locally known as Yolanda, brought after.

In 2001, the Immaculate Conception Church was declared a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines—a fitting tribute to its historical significance and cultural heritage. It serves as a living

the Promising and picturesque island sulangan

If Batanes was known of its breathtaking views in the north part of the Philippines and Palawan is renowned of its stunning scenery, unique wildlife and vibrant culture in the southwesternmost part of the Philippines, there is also a picturesque place that lies at the tip of the mainland, along the lines of the Pacific shore. A place that may offer you a twist of excitement, fun and also breathtaking scenario. A place surrounded by a crystal clear body of seawaters and a fine sand lying beneath on it. A place that may convince you and your family and friends to come over and go for a vacation-like mood.

And there it is, the place of promise, the island of Sulangan, of Guiuan Eastern Samar!

Starting from Calicoan Island, the first part of the island, i’ve witnessed those waves, circulating its motions, to and fro like a fingertips, entailing such notion that the place portraits a surfing activity area. Alongside with it, are the beautiful, known and classy resorts such as the Balay Pacifico, Calicoan Villa Hotel and Resort, and the Gray Inn Hotel and Resort, owned and managed by the foreigners living for good in the island.

Likewise, as go through with it, I behold a small spot of light spangled with a bright

light during the night, and there it is called as the “Dubai”, or a satelite in which the local people lived, named as “the pusaan” or that means, in every bumps of the waves into its coastal lines, this satelite serves as the barrier to protect the land area part of the place. As well as in this satelite, I witnessed those people took some instagrammable snaps, posing in a desired manner.

As I went along my journey, also delved to discover and witness the cave-like lagoon named as “Linao Cave”. The crytal clear water of the lagoon gives a fresh and relaxing mood of being as you will come and take a soak of your body into the water. The locals called it as linao or linaw because of it clear, cold and fresh water that it houses. Surely, you will not be

hesitant and it will persuade you more to visit the place.

As a wishful traveler and moving into the next destination, fueled myself first, and breath, behold at the end of the curve was a bridge sits across the sea mirroring the space above, it was finally the sulangan bridge that connects the calicoan island and sulangan. During night time, some locals tend to stay at the bridge because of those little shimmers, mimicking, dazzling, dancing glimmers starlights in the sky. The bridge signifies that finally am on my way to the known St. Anthony de Padua Church, to which thousands of people visits to see this patron saint, and confess a promise.

In the proper barangay of Sulangan, also indulge some memorabilias and

mementos prepared and sold by the Sulanganon folks living near at the St. Anthony de Padua Church. Not only this, Sulanganon folks also selling some delicacies, finger foods and alike. People in every walks of life come patronize these souvenirs presenting to their friends and family.

As a wishful traveler, all I can say is that, it is a must try to visit such beautiful place full of hopes and promise, from its scenic spots, its white-sand beaches and to its miraculous church.

So, what are you waiting for, come and visit Sulangan, the land of promise, resilient and friendly people!

museum, preserving centuries-old traditions and customs for future generations to cherish and celebrate. Indeed, the Immaculate Conception Church in Guiuan, Eastern Samar, stands as a beacon of resilience, faith, and cultural heritage, simply as a monolithic treasure of Guiuan. Moreover, it is still seen as a representation with a paragon of beauty, behind the white-stoned gigantic structure, a story of chronicle that will always be whispered to be told and blessings that will be revealed, serving as the sacred treasure of the town, Guiuan.

4Ds’ Contribution into a Wide Range Society

Its impact to the Youth of Guiuan

In an era where information is at our fingertips, awareness is the first step towards change. One organization that understands this and is making strides in this direction is Determined. Driven. Different. Dedicated. Youth Organization. This feature explores the inspiring journey of 4D, a youth group from Guiuan that is raising awareness on crucial issues and empowering young people to take action.

4D Youth was first named “4D Youth of Guiuan” and was established by the 1st batch of peer educators on October 15, 2016. Back then, there was no municipal-wide organization in Guiuan, which was one of the main reasons for the 4D establishment. It was a way to create opportunities for the active youth of Guiuan.

4D’s vision is to create a world where every child and young person is empowered to lead healthy, fulfilling lives, free from harm, and equipped with the skills and knowledge to advocate for their rights and protect the environment. And their mission is to empower children and youth to become agents of change in their communities by promoting teen health, advocating for child rights and protection, fostering leadership and empowerment, facilitating peer education, and promoting environmental education and sustainability.

Prior to the pandemic, the organization was actively involved in efforts to reduce teenage pregnancy, or TP. They conduct awareness raising activities they call FunNgaram Roadshow, which contains different booths including a Sexuality Booth, Mental Health Booth, Child Protection Booth and many more raising awareness both like the educational peryahan

they called as “Peeryahan”, which was one of the crowd’s favorites. This activity allows them to learn many things while having fun.

Since 2016–2019, the organization hosted and funded the International Youth Day, or IYD, celebrations in Guiuan with different empowering themes. It was a one-of-a kind opportunity to express the youth’s voices creatively. They also conducted a concert for a cause in 2018 entitled “YouthRoar” to fight for youth discrimination from certain leaders and officials. They showcase their talents and use their creativity to express their voices. It was such a good year for 4D. But, pandemic happened, and they started their efforts online. Celebrate IYD2020 through online activities and conduct relief operations to teenage mothers. It was a hard year, and we had no idea how to continue.

In 2021, there was a significant decrease in teenage pregnancy cases in Guiuan. With the help of a peer-to-peer approach, the participants were more engaged and learned a lot. Many challenges came along with the organization, but it has no match for the 4D’s persistence and dedication. This data is very important to the organization as well as the Peer Educators. “All the hard work and perseverance had been paid off,” Jessica Pagatpatan said, a 4D Adviser.

In the past years, prior to the pandemic 4D Youth was able to establish partnerships with some SK officials and access funds to conduct FunNgaram activities. They were able to establish a strong partnership with the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDo) and Rural Health Unit (RHU). RHU helped in monitoring the teenage pregnancy cases as well as MSWDo enabling them to reach out to more participants and conduct some raising awareness activities. Now, they have expanded their advocacy efforts to other municipalities like Marabut, Salcedo, and Basey.

Since 2021, 4D has been just a shadow, following the core group of peer educators. But now, in 2024, a stronger and bigger 4D is being established, from 4D-Youth of Guiuan to 4D-Youth. Since then, 4D has been a regional organization registered under YORP.

The 4D Youth Organization’s journey is a shining example of how awareness can ignite change. Their work serves as a reminder that when youth are educated, engaged, and empowered, they can indeed change the world.

Building Stronger Bonds

The Case for a Family Day and Moral Recovery Program at Guiuan National High School

In today’s fast-paced world, where technological distractions and societal pressures abound, the importance of family and moral values often takes a backseat. As a concerned member of the community, Guiuan National High School can play a vital role in addressing this issue. The implementation of a Family Day and Moral Recovery Program at the school, aiming to strengthen family bonds and instill essential values in the students, is deemed necessary in the following components:

The Importance of Family: Family is the cornerstone of society, and its influence on an individual’s development cannot be overstated. By fostering a sense of belonging, support, and love, strong family relationships provide a solid foundation for personal growth and resilience. However, in today’s modern world, families are increasingly facing challenges that can strain these bonds. It is crucial to create opportunities to strengthen family connections and promote a healthy family dynamic.

The Role of Schools: Schools, as center of education and community, have the potential to positively impact students’ lives beyond academics. Guiuan National High School can take the lead in promoting family values and facilitating meaningful interactions between students and their families. By implementing a Family Day, the school can provide a platform for families to come together, engage in activities, and reinforce the importance of family bonds.

The Power of Moral Recovery Program: In addition to fostering family connections, Guiuan National High School should consider

SENYANG

A Tale of Hardship and Resilience

In the sprawling space of the Guiuan Public Market, filled with rows of stalls and vendors hawking everything from fresh produce and meats to an array of goods and wares enticing shoppers and passersby, there is a figure that stands out amidst the chaos. A woman whose resilience shines through the shadows of her past. A poor, bullied, and mentally ill woman who rises up from her bullies, transforms her life, and finds her place in the world.

“Senyang,” as she is popularly known, is an elderly woman with tousled hair and shabby clothes. Her eyes were clouded with sadness that seemed to weigh heavily on her shoulder. She was known to many as a mentally ill woman who once wandered the streets of Guiuan. But to those who took the time to look beyond the surface, Senyang’s story was one of struggle and pain.

a means of living; it was her lifeline, a way to put herself in a world that often felt overwhelming and chaotic.

One day, as Senyang wandered through the crowded and busy market, she stumbled upon a vacant space along the market street. It was nothing but an empty, lifeless space, but to Senyang, it was a beacon of possibility—a chance to reclaim her dignity and forge a new path for herself.

KEEP UP & CATCH UP

“If you can’t keep up, strive to catch up! Proclaimed the Male Band Leaders of Guiuan NHS.”

One of the stumbling blocks faced by the band members, particularly the male band leaders of the Guiuan Marching Band, is the difficulty of balancing rehearsals of bandrelated activities with their studies. Which should it be, and why? When classes and band practice manifest at the same time, what should they do?

implementing a Moral Recovery Program. This program would focus on instilling moral values, ethics, and character development in students.

With the prevalence of negative influences and societal challenges, it is essential to equip students with a strong moral compass to navigate the complexities of life. By integrating moral education into the curriculum and organizing workshops and discussions, the school can help shape students into responsible, compassionate, and ethical individuals.

Benefits for Students and the Community: The implementation of a Family Day and Moral Recovery Program at Guiuan National High School

would bring numerous benefits. Firstly, it would strengthen family relationships, creating a supportive environment for students to thrive academically and emotionally. Additionally, it would foster a sense of community and belonging, as families and students come together to celebrate shared values. Moreover, a Moral Recovery Program would equip students with the necessary tools to make ethical decisions, positively impacting their interactions within the school and broader community.

Guiuan National High School has the opportunity to make a profound impact on the lives of its students and the community at large. By implementing a Family Day and Moral Recovery Program, the school can strengthen family bonds, instill essential values, and create a supportive and ethical learning environment.

Let us seize this opportunity to build stronger bonds, nurture character, and shape the future generation into responsible and compassionate individuals. Together, we can create a brighter and more harmonious community.

Del Valle, one of the band leaders, aside from the pride of representing the school, GNHS, he is also proud of the connection he made with his fellow band members in their journey. Joining the band served as a bridge for him to enjoy the life of a student to its fullest. He also added that it serves as a call to action to work harder and maintain his grades.

There are many things we aspire to become and many experiences we wish to fulfill.

Like the male band leaders, they choose what makes their hearts’s desire, what puts a smile on their handsome faces.

As the male band leader

Senyang’s journey began in the small town of Guiuan, where she faced the harsh reality of life. Born into a world colored by poverty and neglect. She is often alone and misunderstood by everyone around her. Her experiences were far from easy. She would often hear people talking and laughing behind her back, cruel boos that cut through her delicate spirit like rubbles of glass.

As she grew older, her mental health began to deteriorate. Bullied and ridiculed for her mental illness, she had known the sense of rejection and the pain of loneliness all too well. For years, she was aimlessly exploring the town streets, her mind a whirlwind of confusion and despair. People saw her talking loudly to herself and scolding people. To some, she’s a source of amusement; to others, she’s a source of fear. The amused give her money and food, while those who fear throw mean and hurtful words. But amidst her dark path, there’s a flicker of hope—a dream to achieve a peaceful life. Senyang held on to a glimmer of hope that one day she would break free from the shackles of her circumstances.

Her once-dimmed path lightened up when the local government offered her financial aid. She started selling different goods and candies at the local public market. Armed with nothing more than her tray of candies and her determination to make her mark on the world, she ventured into the bustling chaos of the public market.

Day after day, Senyang braved the crowds, including the public market’s vendors and buyers, her voice ringing out like a high-pitched melody as she called out to them, offering them a taste of sweetness.

Because of her illness, she was bullied while she’s trying to make a living. For her, selling goods and candies was more than just

For in her heart lies a powerful lesson – a reminder that even in our darkest moments – there is always light to be found. “

And so, with a sense of purpose that had long eluded her, Senyang set to work, transforming the empty space into a haven of hope and resilience. She put the different goods and candies on her small table beside the local public market. She also had a tiny wooden chair where she sat alone all day, waiting for people to buy from her.

Years passed, and Senyang’s spirit was preserved, unbroken by the trials she faced. She could have continued roaming around, asking for pennies from people, but she chose to earn a living to provide for herself. Slowly but surely, she managed to go through the challenges of every day while trying to make ends meet. Her presence at the market may be a source of laughter, fear, or hope for the few, but for some, she is a beacon of light in an often-tumultuous world.

Her tiny store is more than just a business; it symbolizes hope and resilience, a testament to the indomitable human spirit. In a world where judgment prevails, Senyang represents resiliency and bravery. She deserves to live a life with kindness and respect. For in her heart lies a powerful lesson – a reminder that even in our darkest moments – there is always light to be found. Though the road may be long and difficult, it is through perseverance, resilience, and determination that we can truly transform our lives and find our place in the world.

Awalk to the hallway of Calbiga National High School, Calbiga Western Samar, was full of proposed innovations and probable solutions to worldwide problems that STEMAZING offered me as a contender. A threehour-long research paper proposal making competition that was aimed at enhancing students mathematical and scientific skills in order to solve societal problems and issues upchallenges me in the said competition. The brilliant minds of student researchers spewing ideas straight out of Einstein’s books covered all of the walls of the four-cornered contest room. Out from those experiences, enjoyed the pieces of knowledge congested in my mind. However, I still look forward to being a part of it, to being a part of a team that trespasses and pours data and information into the pre-existing fields and body of knowledge.

According to Jonna Miralles, a former participant in the competition, teamwork and hard work should be the keys to contending in a contest. She also stressed that the constituents of the team had different tasks, but they thought they were one as their team collaborated to achieve the feat. She added that the competition was helpful to them as STEM senior high school students during that time, and it was a chance that they faced innovative ideas with proper guidance and also with financial support.

THE ACADEMIC REVOLUTION OF AI

Artificial Intelligence, commonly known as AI, is revolutionizing the education system. AI is a versatile computer system that aims to imitate human intelligence and has gradually changed to what it is today since the pandemic. This resulted in its pervasiveness in academic environments, which are patronized mostly by students. How far are we willing to let AI shape our educational landscape?

In my experience, I’ve made peers in the competition, even with contradicting beliefs. We still had the same interests popping out of our mouths and managed to exchange and instill learning in each of our curious minds. We shared a lot of ideas, and we were still friends up until now. Socialization. Friendship. I didn’t know that this could be a subsequent effect of joining a science-themed competition. I didn’t expect that the expansion of my social circle could possibly happen when I was considering joining the contest, but things turned unexpectedly when I made a deliberate decision to join the competition. More importantly, the science-themed contest offered a stage, a spot to display our young minds’ eagerness for solutions, as we’re allowed to create innovations. It developed our sense of understanding of what really is happening to our environment right now and was, in essence, an eye-opener. And it widened the limited scope that had for the present technological advancements that we currently possess. I’ve developed essential skills that a 21st century student should have: critical thinking, communication skills, creativity, problem solving skills, collaboration, information literacy, technology skills, and digital literacy. The span of the event taught me things I wasn’t aware of, things that I took lightly, things that I took for granted, and things that thought would never happen. Being more aware of who we are and of what we have is a big leap from being the empty-minded person that I was beforehand.

AI is paving the way for a personalized learning experience for students. It is common knowledge that not all students are the same. Students vary in their interests and IQs. Also, with the fast-paced advancements in technology, conventional classrooms struggle to ignite the learning interests of modern-day students. With AI, students can access organized information, helping them identify and locate relevant sources, thereby making their learning venture easy.

In addition, since AI depends on the user’s request, students can adjust the complexity of language use and give specific content requirements to cater

to their unique needs, which, in essence, allows them to learn at their own pace.

AI is also breaking barriers and borders. With AI, all students, including the specially-abled, can have access to all learning opportunities regardless of their status, background, orientation, and even location. For instance, a student can learn a new language at their own pace through AI without proper education or help from a teacher.

Although AI can be helpful in terms of making studying easier, it still has its downsides. In the not-so-distant future, it may mold a generation that completely relies on AI and lacks the ability to be original, creative, and critical thinkers. Furthermore, with its rapid advancements, it could even replace all jobs that are commonly done by a physical person, making education in the future pointless.

However, it does not completely mean that using AI will automatically breed

There is nothing to be afraid of with AI revolutionizing the academe if boundaries are well-set, properly communicated, and religiously “

negative outcomes in academia. It is just a matter of setting boundaries in terms of how much of these academic responsibilities should be relied on by AI. School administrators and teachers should develop regulations, standards, and ethical rules on how to use AI responsibly. Additionally, these must be communicated comprehensively to students so they will not go overboard. Teachers should also be able to maximize these AI tools to assist them in classroom instruction, personalize learning experiences, and model to students how they should be appropriately used. AI is revolutionizing the academic sector, and it is unstoppable. Hence, caution must be observed in its implementation and use among educators, and most especially among students.

Moreover, AI is undeniably making the lives of students easier, opening doors to a wide range of learning opportunities.

AI is serving its purpose—to

work as an alternative, or, as its name suggests, artificial intelligence. It is not built to equate the complexities of human intelligence because IT SIMPLY COULD NOT. There is nothing to be afraid of with AI revolutionizing the academe if boundaries are well-set, properly communicated, and religiously observed. What if AI’s infiltration into academia marks the dawn of a new era, one where learning is tailored to individual needs and boundaries blur between human and machine intellect?

AI revolutionizing the academe, not AI replacing the academe—this will depend on how disciplined students and teachers are in terms of sticking to boundaries. This ethical dilemma hinges on us; control and power still lie in human intelligence only if we use it. Will learners and educators harness its power as a tool for knowledge or risk being overtaken by the very technology they seek to master?

‘NADIRI KAMI HIT MINA’

An estimated 1,500 attendees composed of environmental advocates, church-affiliated groups, parishioners of the local churches of Eastern Samar Province and other provinces’ representatives demonstrated their strong staunch on ‘ No to Mining and Environmental Degradation in any parts of Samar’ in an Island-Wide Jericho Prayer Assembly on January 20 at the Immaculate Conception Church, Guiuan, Eastern Samar.

The prayer assembly was aimed at raising awareness to stop the mining operations in Homonhon, Manicani and Samar Islands.

Signature campaign gained momentum as supporters and anti-mining advocates flocked and inked their signatures at the freedom wall placed outside the church.

Miguel Balboa Mendoza attended the event wearing a tarpaulin showing how determined he is to show his support to the stop of mining in the islands of Guiuan.

“Half of me is from Homonhon, half of me is from Manicani but live here in Guiuan. I know what is happening in both isla”, he narrated.

He then mentioned how the current situation in the mining islands of Guiuan is alarming, affecting the environment and the lives of people living there.

Meanwhile, St. John the Baptist Parish Priest of Homonhon Fr. Jonathan Pading gave a situational report and addressed the assembly and updated them on the current situation on Homonhon Island while highlighting community concerns. Fr. Jonathan never renounced his faith in what he believed. In describing issues faced by Homonhon Island, Fr. Jonathan urged participants to use their spiritual energies to make significant environmental interventions.

“We are not in the arena of anti or pro mining, we are in a church of everyone, place of the holy Christ. Let God intervene, let God’s voice be heared”, he said. In addition, Philippine

Misereor Partnership Inc. Anti-Mining Campaign (PMPI-AMC) Cherylon Aivan Herzano delivered a thought-provoking speech at the Island-Wide Jericho Prayer Assembly. Herzano ably navigated complex environmental issues focusing on the vital aspects of nature’s rights and the need for climate justice. The graphic stories that Herzano told showed how challenging it is for the community to live in harmony with its environment, hence necessitating collective responsibility as Earth stewards. In his solicitation for environmental advocacy, Herzano softly argued for nature’s rights and called on humanity to change its

perception towards them through legislation so that ecosystems could be recognized and protected.

To end, Bishop Most Rev. Fr. Crispin Varquez encouraged everyone to continue praying to halt the mining operations in the island of Samar.

“We have to continue praying. If possible we will not stop doing this kind activity until ma stop an mining operation dinhe sa isla han Samar.”

The event concluded with a solemn eucharistic celebration . The Diocese Borongan and CARITAS Borongan organized the Island-wide assembly.

Overcoming Hurdles: Athlete’s Journey to Palarong Pambansa

Every year, lots of athletes from different parts of the country dream big and aim high about playing at Palarong Pambansa, the pinnacle of school sports. Behind the grandeur of this event lie stories of perseverance, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication from young athletes who strive to represent their regions on the national stage.

However, behind its flashiness and majesty, the journey to Palarong Pambansa is riddled with challenges that often go unnoticed.

The journey of a champion is never easy. They go on a path full of hardships brought upon by financial and geographical constraints. For athletes, the road to Palarong Pambansa is paved with challenges that test not only their physical prowess but also their mental fortitude.

Limited resources, insufficient facilities, and a lack of access to proper training are just a few of the obstacles they must overcome on their quest for excellence.

Many come from humble backgrounds, where even the basic necessities required to pursue their passion for sports are often out of reach. Student athletes from different parts of the country have to go through various stages and go against amazing players from other places to reach the peak of school sports.

The first stage is the in-school competition, also known as the Intramural Meet where students from different grade levels battle it out to win in their chosen sports field. The winning teams will be the ones to represent the school in the next stage. The next level is the District Meet, in this level, the winners will compete with other

schools in their district to bring home the trophy. The next level is the Inter-District, the lucky winners from the District Meet will represent their district and compete with athletes from other districts. The next level is the Unit Meet wherein the athletes compete against the other athletes from their respective Unit.

In our province, Eastern Samar, we have four Units that compete against each other and go through the process of choosing their best athletes that stood out to represent their Unit for the Provincial Meet also known as Eastern Samar Provincial Athletic Meet Association (ESPAAM) where all Units compete to go through the next level of the sports event. The next level is the Eastern Visayas Athletic Association (EVRAA), in which the athletes battle it out for the oppurtunity to represent their

region in the Palarong Pambansa.

Despite these challenges, the spirit of resilience burns brightly within these athletes. They train seriously and often sacrifice their Academics, household responsibilities, and extracurricular commitments. Practice Makes Perfect: A Mantra for Sports Excellence

In the realm of sports, the phrase “practice makes perfect” is not just a typical maxim we often hear; it’s a mantra, a guiding principle, and a path to excellence. It’s the cornerstone of every athlete’s journey, the secret ingredient behind their awe-inspiring performances, and the key to unlocking their full potential.

Sports, in their essence, are a physical manifestation of human will, determination, and resilience. It’s a field where raw talent alone doesn’t guarantee success; instead, it’s the relentless pursuit of perfection, the countless hours spent in training, and the unwavering commitment to improvement that propels an athlete to the pinnacle of their game. The importance of practice in sports cannot be undermined. It’s through practice that athletes refine their skills, build stamina, develop strategies, and gain a deeper understanding of their game. It’s a process of trial and error, of learning from mistakes, and of pushing one’s limits. It’s a journey of selfdiscovery, of realizing one’s strengths and weaknesses, and of constantly striving to be better.

The final ceremony epitomized a triumphant union of efforts. Athletes, coaches and onlookers came together to applaud the shared dedication invested in the event. Excitement buzzed in the air as champions were declared. Their relentless commitment transformed into a spectacular moment of recognition.

The beauty of practice lies in its transformative power. It turns a newbie into a professional, an underdog into a champion, and a dreamer into an achiever.

It’s a testament to the fact that success in sports isn’t a matter of chance, but a result of hard work, discipline, and perseverance. Moreover, the value of practice extends beyond the boundaries of the sports field. It instills in the athletes a mindset of continuous learning and growth, a resilience to face challenges, and a determination to never give up. These qualities not only

make them better athletes but also better individuals.

In conclusion, “practice makes perfect” is more than just a saying in sports; it’s a philosophy of life. It’s a testament to the power of hard work, dedication, and perseverance. It’s a reminder that success is not a destination but a journey, and that the key to achieving greatness lies not in innate talent but in relentless practice.

...success in sports isn’t a matter of chance, but a result of hard work, discipline, and perseverance. “

“First thing first is to spam the training, we are totally prepared and conditioned before we jump into battle because we wan’t to showcase that we’re not just here to compete but of course we’re also here carrying the name of our school for a victory,” The GNHS Captain Ball Noreen Bergado said in waray-waray after the media asked how the preparation was done before the competition.

The Spikers, who clutched the game two on the best-of-three championship series, tallied a 2-0 winning streak that spelled the beginning of the end for their hapless Pantheress’ sisters.

“Be humble, always be humble, bisan nag daog, pamati la pirmi ha mga coaches ngan trainers, disiplina ha court ngan disiplina ha ngatanan nga ira gin bubuhat then they will achieve greatness,” Jaime Machica, coach of Lady Spikers, shared.

Demonstrating how wild they can get, Lady Spikers’ Noreen Bergado and Emeliza Raganas’ tandem was nearly unstoppable at the net as they completely tamed their opponents after dumping excellent spikes and iron-wall blocks in an exhausting fist set, 28-26.

Ready to strike back, TNHS Pahanters, who drew strength from their hometown crowds, picked up their score-gaining tactics but failed to turn back their opponent when the momentum was already set for the Lady Spikers as Bargado stood tall with her finishing touch spike, 25-20 in the second set, which then declared the GNHS as the roosters of Kidlat Este.

“Siguro po the connection with my teammates and our gameplay,” Johanna Doculara, the captain ball of TNHS, said during the interview. As part of its preparation, Lady Spikers will conduct its training for the forthcoming Eastern Visayas Regional Athletic Association (EVRAA) Meet which will be held at Ormoc City this May.

Spectators witnessed intense rivalries to the different players in a game. Hence, the camaraderie among participants underscored the genuine spirit of sportsmanship.

The event’s standout moment was the quest for Mr. and Ms. Inter-District Meet, injecting a dose of sophistication and glamour into the competition.

Participants not only exhibited athletic excellence but also radiated charm and grace that captivates the audience.

Resounding cheers and yells acknowledged that, ultimately, each participant emerged victorious through their steadfast devotion.

The climax of the Inter-District Athletic Meet was the awarding ceremony, celebrating exceptional athletes in diverse categories. With medals adorning necks and trophies proudly raised, it was clear that the real triumph resided in the strong connections formed and the unwavering determination shown by every participant.

After conquering the Inter-District Meet, triumphant athletes pave their way to the Unit Meet, set to spotlight Guiuan’s finest talents on a grander platform. Guiuan Districts Unite in Athletic Showdown

Two Casimos are still better than a Docena.

It’s a mother-andson affair after Unit 3 Red Spartans’ coach and table tennis smasher Gloria Casimo and Dave Klementh, respectively, dusted the table as the latter completely swept into the bin Unit 4’s Mark Adrian Docena in the Men’s Table Tennis Secondary after a lopsided single elimination game, 11-7, 12-10, 11-8, at Rio Del Dyaryo resort

in Mercedes, February 29. The sixteen-year-old Casimo, who drew strength from his mother-turnedcoach Gloria Casimo, demonstrated how victors do it by firing multiple topspin smashes and alarming shakehand-chop services, marking a constant advantage from Docena throughout the game.

“Makuri, Makulba, but it was a close fight and I did my best,” Casimo stated as he smirked in triumph.

Competing in a door-die game, young rivals Dave and Adrian began by striking ping-pongs back and forth as they exchanged explosive-whacking smashes, which resulted in numerous deadlocks; however, Casimo showed no mercy to secure the elimination round.

Casimo, hyped with the loud cheers from the crowds, started the game with rumbling strikes and services across the net to gather his advantage, 11-7, against

seventeen-year-old rival Docena in the first set.

Hopped up to turn the table in his favor, Docena rampaged in a later time to take down his opponent, as he ping-ponged the ball into the other side of the cobwebs, 10-10, but fell short of owning the set as Casimo fired two consecutive lobstrokes, nailing a 12-10 advantage in the second set.

“Mas maupay na ig atake mo ayaw pag aalang hit pag tira. Asya it makuri kay an

ak

gin buhat kay nag aalang ako hit pag atake; you don’t deserve to win if you don’t accept defeat,” Docena said in his defeat.

Like what happened in the first set, Dave Casimom, hyped with the loud cheers from the crowd, threw sticks and stones at Adrian to end the rally without even breaking a sweat in the final set, 11-8.

When asked what preparations they made in preparation for ESPAAM 2024, Mrs. Ailaine M. Camposano, a billiards coach from Unit IV, responded, “I let my athlete practice during his free time, like 3-5 pm, and

also during Saturdays and Sundays. But of course I don’t want him to sacrifice his academic subjects since I also want him to get high grades since he is a grade 10 student, and for him to be a part of those students who will be moving up soon.

Tribu Maduruto Regu ousts Tribu Rig-on Spikers over 2-1 margin

Grade 11 star player Zoe Pareño of Tribo Maduruto shook-off the cobwebs as he unlocked his hard-driven spikes and head spins en route to a sure victory against Tribo Rig-on at Guiuan National High School Grounds, October 19.

Eager to win, Pareño with Shadrick Badar employed full wheelbarrow kicks and high accuracy kills to stop the rampage at a 2-1 barrage before a rancor crowd.

The opening salvo started on fire as both regus bombed each other with incessant offensive thrust, showcasing great technical know-hows in kills and kicks, which resulted in a one-point lead in favor of Tribo Maduruto.

However, Tribu Rig-on shed the most blood, and encountered lapses in ensuing the defense against Tribu Manduruto, 21-22 as they ended the first set.

Just as it was getting intense, the unit six player swept the feet of the unit 5 players by making the team receive the ball and making it go out of bounds.

Slender yet agile, Star Player Zoe Pareño did not let his guard down as he unleashed a black magic return spike when he executed a hail Mary kick to the ball which shattered the hopes of Tribu Rig-on in winning the game.
