A CROSSING FULL OF DANGER! More than 50 hours non-stop in the waters of the Straits of Florida

1 THE PROJECT… A REAL HUMAN ADVENTURE The Crossing 2017 is the exceptional challenge of Nino Fraguela, a French triathlete of Cuban origin, to connect the cities of Miami and Havana with a spectacular swim.

The athlete will test the limits of physical and mental endurance. That is why Nino will be assisted by a team of around thirty people who are convinced of the success of the challenge, a historic record.

The Crossing 2017 will be in the form of a triathlon. This journey will begin symbolically with 13 miles of running in the Little Havana neighborhood of Miami, followed by 168 miles of biking from Miami to Key West, to finish with a spectacular swim of 106 miles across the Straits of Florida, which separate Key West from Havana.

The members of his team are recognized in the world of sport, science and technology.

This challenge, never before attempted by a man, will take place September-october 2017. Two years of preparation and rigorous training is necessary so that Nino, assisted by his team, can succeed in his dream. The Crossing 2017 is an enormous challenge for Nino and his team. The triathlete will face extreme difficulties, especially the swimming part in the treacherous Straits of Florida: weather conditions, dangerous fauna and the very powerful Gulf Stream, nicknamed “The Great Blue River” in Ernest Hemingway’s novel “The Old Man and the Sea”.

The Crossing, besides being an exceptional challenge, is unique in many ways: • Never previously attempted by a man. Only four women have tried • Never attempted by a triathlete • Never attempted by a non-professional athlete and one without a worldwide title in free-water swimming • Never attempted by a Cuban The philosophy of The Crossing 2017? To be an unprecedented challenge to put the physical and mental limits of a human being to the test.

2 WHY THE CROSSING 2017 ?

“

A few years ago I was on a beach in the Caribbean which I frequented as a child. When I swam up to the coral reef I faced a real nightmare. This reef, once considered as among the most beautiful in the world, was destroyed. In the 200 meters which separated it from the coast there were bottles, cans, garbage bags and lots of other garbage. In 15 years the beach had been transformed into a gigantic trashcan. Never could I have imagined finding this paradise in such a state. On my return to Europe, I realized the urgency to alert the public : Sharks killed just for their fins, dolphins and whales massacred, fishing nets scraping the seabed and catching even the smallest fish, not forgetting global warming of the earth and the oceans with all its impacts.

Devastating effects with their first climate refugees.... As the father of 3 girls I cannot tolerate that we continue like this and sacrifice the future of our children and successive generations. These two concerns, nature and our children, urged me to act to help the people, the associations and the philanthropists who fight every day for the defense of our planet. So I understood that I had to work alongside them and take very strong action to deliver a message and sensitize the world to this situation, in the hope that my daughters and all the children of the world can live one day on this planet in harmony with nature.

2 WHY THE CROSSING 2017 ? 1 | ACHIEVE AN EXTRAORDINARY AND HISTORIC SPORTING CHALLENGE The Crossing 2017 is a sporting challenge to show the world how far a human being can go, and what are his limits of physical and mental endurance. The Crossing 2017 is also symbolic, joining the United States and Cuba.

2 | RAISE AWARENESS OF THE PROTECTION OF THE OCEANS , NATURE AND THE FUTURE OF OUR CHILDREN The goal is to draw society's attention to the need to protect nature, the marine environment and its wildlife, and to raise awareness of the dangers of global warming. We plan to raise funds to help support two associations, one dedicated to the protection of nature and the other to the protection of children.

3 | SEND THE MESSAGE TO ALL THAT, WITH WILL, PASSION AND TEAMWORK, EVERY CHALLENGE IS POSSIBLE If we are able to achieve this challenge, even if it seems impossible, and even if logic and probabilities are against us, then you will be able to achieve all that you undertake. Any dream is achievable and examples can be found of extraordinary challenges over the centuries that have been achieved by men and women. Where are our limits?

NINO FRAGUELA

A PORTRAIT OF AN EXTRAORDINARY MAN

7

3 NINO FRAGUELA Born in 1962 in the Vedado district, only 50 meters from the famous Malecon of Havana, he has been fascinated since his early youth by nature, the sea and marine wildlife. At 5 years of age, due to frequent asthma attacks and pursuant to doctor’s advice, Nino began swimming in the swimming pool of a club in the Cuban capital. At the same time he made his first plunges into the sea and, at 9 years of age, he began free diving. Quickly he began passing the same amount of time at sea as at school, which were separated by only 200 meters. At the age of 12, he moved from swimming to water polo. In 1986 he graduated from the Faculty of Biology of The University of Havana. During his 5 years there, he represented the University in numerous competitions and was a member of Havana’s team in the water polo national championships.

After his studies he began working at the Hotel Colony on an island in the south of Cuba, at the first and foremost International Dive Center of Cuba, where various underwater photograph competitions were organized (4th World Championships of Underwater Photography) due to the excellent state of preservation of the sea bed there, which was a protected and incredible nature reserve. It was during this period, thanks to his scuba and free diving activities, that his deep interest in the sea and its protection was reaffirmed. His character, his strength, his will, his versatility and his perpetual desire to always push ahead were forged by his experiences with nature, other divers and adverse weather conditions. His rebel and nonconformist character leads him to attempt new challenges while always seeking perfection, which is, along with his great love for nature, one of his big virtues. This makes a challenge such as The Crossing 2017 ultimately predictable!

8

His arrival in France in 1990 and his ability to integrate there show that he is a man capable of adapting to any situation, whether on the human level or as a sportsman. He lives at present in France and works as a sports coach. During his 55 years on this earth he has never stopped his sporting activities, setting for himself bigger and bigger challenges, and in this vein he began doing triathlons, which became his great passion. He has participated in numerous triathlons and Ironman competitions in Europe and in America and has represented France in several international triathlon competitions such as the Iberoamericain Championships ITU in Havana, the European Championships ETU in Geneva (2015), the World Championships ITU in Chicago (2015) and the European Triathon Championships ETU in Lisbon (2015).

BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT CHALLENGE OF HIS LIFE IS UNDOUBTEDLY THE CROSSING 2017, HIS BIGGEST DREAM AND ONLY PRIORITY FOR TWO YEARS, AND WHAT WE HOPE TO CELEBRATE IN THE FALL OF 2017.

Univision 51

7 SPONSORING & PARTNERSHIPS BECOME A PRIVILEGED PARTNER OF AN OUTSTANDING SPORTING EVENT, BOTH SYMBOLIC AND CHARITABLE, WITH INTERNATIONAL MEDIA COVERAGE Even though The Crossing 2017 will take place between the United States and Cuba, the Challenge is being prepared in Europe and mainly in France, where Nino (who is French as well as Cuban) and most of the team lives. Sizable journalistic and media coverage, which has already begun, as well as a broad promotional and advertising campaign by first-rate media, are going to put France in media headlines all over the world. We look for institutions, companies and brand names that could be interested commercially, as well as philanthropically or scientifically, to sponsor or collaborate with our Crossing. We also look for those who would like to participate in donations to non-governmental organizations with which we would like to collaborate for the conservation and protection of our oceans and nature, as well as protection of children.
