“Just like rape. Just like adultery.” Pastor says gayness is ‘a sexual sin’ By Eoghan McNeill news@thecorknews.ie

A

Cork pastor has said that homosexuality is “a sexual sin, just like rape” in support of demands from religious leaders for a so–called ‘conscience clause’ to accompany the May 22nd equality referendum Calls for a conscience clause have been supported by a number of Cork religious leaders and have also drawn a claim that “God’s law” will always apply “irrespective of the law of the land,” from an east Cork priest. The clause would permit religious groups to refuse to perform same–sex marriages in the event the referendum passes.

“I’d be in favour of a conscience clause, the same way I’d be in favour of the gardai not shooting me when I’m innocent,” said Craig Ledbetter of the Bible Baptist Church of Ballincollig. “It would violate my conscience as a religious leader. I will not marry a same sex couple. Homosexuality is a sexual sin, just like rape, just like adultery. If a rapist demanded his crimes to be recognised legally, we as a society wouldn’t allow it,” Pastor Ledbetter told The Cork News. Pastor Ledbetter said that his opposition to same–sex marriage should not be considered a personal attack on gay people, and that permitting religious groups to refuse to provide for same– sex marriages should not be considered discriminatory.

“They’re hijacking marriage. It doesn’t belong to them,” he said, referring to gay couples. “When (samesex marriage) is available elsewhere, you can’t force every religious group to provide it. We used to live in a free society. Of all people, liberals demand diversity. Now, they demand conformity. It’s wrong, wrong, wrong,” he continued. Members of the Catholic clergy, the Islamic Cultural Centre of Ireland, and the Reformed Presbyterian Church this week signed an online petition calling for a “conscientious objection” clause to be included in the referendum. t has been a tragic week. Last weekend a young woman, enjoying a night out, told her friends she would return. She never did. Karen Buckley’s family, well liked and respected in Mourneabbey in north Cork, waited in desperate hope for good news that never came. Karen’s body was discovered on farmland not far from Glasgow, and as one search ended another has begun. We ask questions at times like this, and they are all the more difficult because deep down, we have to admit to ourselves that perhaps some of them have no answer. We can find out how this tragedy befell Karen and her friends and her family and, going on what I’ve been told, the close, small, shocked community which has gathered around to mourn the loss of so beloved and promising a woman. We know where this grim crime took place. We know more or less when. The police in Scotland, whose investigation and conduct has been exemplary, are fairly certain they know who ended Karen’s life. We may never, truly, know why. Karen’s neighbours and her friends, her classmates and her colleagues, both here and in Scotland, are asking that very question. They have gathered themselves and wrapped their love around one another like a blanket in a desperate effort to comfort each other and, most especially, her family; to pray for them and with them, to embrace them and lift them and to help them to stand and be strong when it must seem that all hope, all strength, is utterly lost. Most of us will never know — and I earnestly hope that we will never know — what they feel, but we can lend our voices to the chorus which has risen from end to end of each of these two islands to tell them that they are not alone. Psalm 130 opens “de profundis clamavi ad te”: from the depths I cry unto thee. It is a pentential psalm, the cry of someone who has been abandoned, who is utterly bereft and alone. A plea. It continues “exaudi vocam meam” – hear my voice. I presume you have read our front page story this week, and I’ll leave you to draw your own conclusions about who hears the voice of whom, but remember the sentiment of that psalm, even if some ‘men of god’ don’t. I’ll take the liberty of paraphrasing. It says “from the morning watch until the night, have hope, for there is mercy”. That’s a message too easily overlooked by so many people. Have hope. There is mercy. I don’t believe that mercy or hope come from beyond us. They come from within us. There are cruel and vicious people in the world, and they are brimming with hate and spite, but we all have the power to bestow blessings. Love and hope are gifts we can all give, and they are utterly precious. Defy the people who seek to take them away, by giving all you can.

did not respond to requests for an official comment, Father Anthony O’Brien of Carrigtwohill said he would agree with the principle of an opt–out: “Conscience is conscience, irrespective of faith. You follow your conscience on any matter,” he told The Cork News. Fr O’Brien said that that same–sex marriges will not be carried out in Carrigtwohill: “The law of God will always apply, irrespective of the law of the land. Our church sees marriage as being between a man and a woman, so it won’t apply to us,” he said. Meanwhile, Reverend John Faris of Cork’s Trinity Presbyterian Church said he does not think a conscience clause would be discriminatory. “In fact, it seems to me that the discrimination might be perpetrated by those who agree with same–sex marriage,” said Rev Faris. “What I fear is that one set of rights will trump all other rights. It’s disturbing. The Presbyterians will not be permitting or endorsing same–sex marriage, and I’m supportive of that policy,” he told The Cork News. Cork Mosque Imam Sheikh Ahmed Hussein Halawa is a member of the Irish Council of Imams, also signatories of the online petition. Imam Halawa insisted the Cork mosque would not provide for same–sex marriages. “We will not provide the service. It’s not allowed for by our religion. We cannot provide for that. We cannot have those kind of ceremonies,” he told The Cork News. However Dr Paul Colton, Church of Ireland Bishop of Cork, Cloyne and Ross, opposed the idea of a conscience clause, telling us “This is an equality issue and is, in my view, the great justice issue of our time. I cannot conceive of how it can ever be right to give an individual, whatever private views and beliefs they may hold, in the exercise of their public duties, a derogation, a conscience opt–out, from a just and equal approach to others in society.

“We would not countenance such a conscience clause in relation to any other of the equality grounds such as age, race, gender, marital status and so on. I cannot see how a conscience clause in relation to sexual orientation would ever be just or right, either,” he said. While Church of Ireland doctrine would officially prohibit same–sex marriages, Dr Colton said he would like to see this change: “The time may come, and personally I hope it does, when the Church of Ireland will review this discipline, in the same way that some of our sister churches have done. Whatever the outcome of the referendum, the fact remains that we have many loved and valued LGBT members in our churches. Week by week they faithfully attend our Church services, enrich the life of our Christian communities and are given the pastoral care they, like any of the rest of us, may need. I certainly would not want to make any comment on the reprehensible comparison that others may have drawn between homosexuality and the crime of rape,” the bishop added. We brought the responses of the religious leaders, and especially comments made by Pastor Ledbetter, to the attention of Yes Equality Cork for comment. “Firstly it is important to stress that this is about civil marriage equality,” they emphasised. “Under the Civil Registration Act 2004 civil ceremonies are conducted by a registered solemniser. This referendum will have no impact on religious ceremonies. The Irish Congress of Trade Unions and the representative trade union, the PSEU, made it clear that there was no demand for a conscience clause in contracts of employment and in fact trade unions are opposed to this concept. Equality legislation of 1998 and 2004 makes discrimination in employment and in the provision of goods and services illegal on a number of specific grounds including age, gender, race, religion and sexual orientation. Equality legislation does not, for instance, allow a service provider to refuse a service on religious grounds.”

We will miss her By Maria Tracey maria@thecorknews.ie

The Buckley family have said they are “absolutely heartbroken” by the death of their “cherished” Karen, whose body was discovered near Glasgow after a four–day intensive search. In a statement, Karen’s father John said 24–year–old Karen was cherished by family and loved by friends. “Marian and I, together with our sons Brendan, Kieran and Damian are absolutely heartbroken,” he said. Karen was an “outgoing girl who travelled the world, where she met lots of people and thoroughly enjoyed her life,” he continued. “We will miss her terribly.” Karen, who was studying occupational therapy at Glasgow Caledonian University, disappeared during a night out in Glasgow last weekend. Friends raised the alarm after she failed to re-

turn to her rented home, leading to a massive search that ended with the recovery of her body on a farm. A 21–year–old man has been arrested in connection with

Karen’s death and will appear in court today, Friday. Karen’s death has rocked her tight–knit community of Mourneabbey. A spokesperson for Mourneabbey

Community Council said their “thoughts and prayers” are with the Buckley family. Friends and neighbours of the Buckleys have tended to their farm while they were

in Scotland waiting for news about Karen, who was John and Marian’s only daughter. Newstalk’s Jonathan Healy, who was at Analeentha Church in Mourneabbey Par-

ish yesterday, Thursday, described the “sombre mood” hanging over the community, as just hours before the discovery of Karen’s body, a “vigil of hope” had been held. “In such a short period of time that hope has been extinguished,” he told The Cork News, adding that the Buckley family are held in “high regard in the community”. “The community in Scotland has rallied behind the family and there is absolutely no doubt, from speaking to people, the community will rally round the Buckley family when they bring Karen’s body home,” Mr Healy added. Glaswegian Diane Stevenson contacted The Cork News to tell us how Karen’s neighbours in Scotland have reacted: “People are heartbroken and angry that our children are not safe to enjoy life,” she said. “We want to do something to help this family. It could have been any one of us.”

Reduction in Cork Airport services

All go on Carey’s Lane and Paul St Work has commenced in earnest at the site of the former Newport Lounge on Paul Street in Cork’ city centre, ahead of the premises’ conversion to the newest link in the JD Wetherspoon’s chain in Ireland. Walls, cladding, flooring and fittings are being removed ahead of a large– scale remodelling of the extensive site, which also housed Mangan’s Nightclub. The current phase of works, which involves a large team of local builders and is focusing on demolition and the remodelling of the internal

space, will be complete within two weeks. The project, which will be ongoing through July, will see the building completely

transformed, with the interior split– level of the old nightclub divided into two storeys to provide space for two bars, going back from the Paul Street façade of the former Newport Lounge, and a kitchen. The current Mangan’s gable, widely considered to be an eyesore and defaced with graffiti, will be clad to integrate it more with the historic look and feel of Carey’s Lane, which is part of Cork’s renowned Huguenot Quarter.

Hays announces Cork jobs Aer Lingus has dismissed rumours that Cork Airport’s Newcastle and Glasgow routes are to be cut, stating that changes to the services have been “blown out of proportion.” While initial reports this week suggested that both services were to be cut, it has emerged that the airline is in fact simply planning to reduce the frequency of flights on the routes, not eliminate them altogether.

The Cork to Glasgow route will be cut from five to four weekly services, effective from Monday, June 22nd, while the Cork to Newcastle route will be cut from four down to to two weekly services, effective from Friday, June 19th. A spokesperson for Aer Lingus Regional confirmed to The Cork News that these changes are to only be effective during the summer months, and that cuts are being made due to decreased demand.

While the Cork and Newcastle services have been reduced, the airline has revealed that the Rennes and Jersey routes are to be recommenced, with two weekly services being introduced on Saturday, June 6th. “The airline will continue to work with the airport to further increase passenger numbers across its routes this year,” said an Aer Lingus spokesperson.

Recruitment company Hays has this week announced 60 new full–time jobs nationwide, 10 of which are to be based in Cork. To launch the recruitment drive, the firm is to hold a graduate open evening on Wednesday, April 22nd in Chartered Accountants House on Pearse Street in Dublin. The hiring process for the Cork positions will begin

shortly thereafter, and according to managing director Richard Eardley, as many as five Cork recruits will be taken on in the first phase of hiring. “All the positions are graduate recruitment consultants, so we’re looking for graduates straight from university, or those who may have worked one or two jobs in customer service. We find they work particularly well,” he told The

Cork News. Mr Eardley hopes that all ten positions will be filled over the course of the next year, on an incremental basis. Currently employing 100 people in Ireland, the 60 new positions will increase Hays’s Irish staff by 60 percent. For more information on the 6.30pm to 8.30pm open evening, call Ailbhe McCann, Hays on (01) 897 2481.

Cork flood fears highlighted Building stats There are fears that serious flooding will “wipe out” Cork City businesses unable to obtain flood insurance, an Oireachtas committee has this week heard. Dr Swenja Surminski of the London School of Economics told the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform that “Cork is probably the most exposed city to floods in Ireland.” “I am surprised, however, that so far the insurance industry has not spelled out its criteria or expectations for what constitutes a flood risk,” she added. Lawrence Owens, Cork Business Association chairman, told the committee of the fears of Cork businesses: “There is no question that another flood similar to those experienced in 2009 or 2014 would wipe out a number of businesses. “They may have had flood insurance on the previous occasion but no longer have it and will decide, therefore, that it is no longer worthwhile to continue in business,” he said. While the Office of Public

Works is expected to complete €60 million work on flood defences in Cork city by 2020, this will not facilitate local businesses looking to take out flood insurance, according to Mr Owens: “Naturally, the expectation among business owners is that once the OPW flood relief scheme is completed, realistic flood insurance cover then will follow. However, the commentary from the representative body for insur-

ance companies, Insurance Ireland, is somewhat different and this is a major concern. “In (Insurance Ireland’s) opinion, the proposed work will not reduce the risk of flooding sufficiently to allow the industry to provide flood cover for businesses and householders in Cork city,” said Mr Owens. Responding to Mr Owens’s claims, Kevin Thompson, Insurance Ireland CEO, referred to Cork’s geography,

which places it at considerable risk of flooding: “There are small pockets of the country which are prone to subsidence, but the problems on the south side of Cork city are the most long–standing and well known. “These areas are prone to subsidence due to the effect of naturally occurring water or leakage from underground pipes on the limestone which is characteristic of these areas,” he said.

A 69% fall in commencements of Cork construction projects in 2015 does not tell the whole story of the county’s construction industry, according to the authors of a new report. Published by Link2Plans, the report finds that although applications have increased by 15% compared to the same period in 2014, commencements have fallen considerably. Nationally, every county recorded a decrease in commencements, with the country recording a 62% fall. According to Danny O’Shea, Link2Plans managing director, the national decrease was to be expected: “2014 was an exceptional year due to regulatory chang-

es. The introduction of changes to the building regulations in March 2014 caused an unprecedented surge in commencements that was akin to a one–off stimulus boost. “In fact, commencements for the first two months of the 2015 are up over 3% on the same period in 2013, which probably gives a more accurate picture of the steady but slow growth in the sector.” According to Mr O’Shea, building applicants rushed to lodge commencements before changes to building regulations in March 2014, resulting in a 132% increase in applications. “These were exceptional gains and ones which we don’t anticipate will be repeated in the medium term,” he said.

Hopes Katie will be walking for communion ‘It’d be fantastic for Katie to walk up the aisle with her friends’ By Maria Tracey maria@thecorknews.ie

A young Cobh schoolgirl is dreaming of walking unaided for her first Holy Communion next year, after life–changing surgery in the United States. Eight–year–old Katie Byrne, who suffers from spastic diplegia cerebral palsy — meaning she cannot stand or walk independently — underwent a Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) operation at St Louis Children’s Hospital in Missouri last year. The complex surgical procedure addresses the spasticity at its neuromuscular root, and Katie also had orthopaedic surgery to lengthen her hamstrings and heel chords. Now, just over five months on, Katie, who is a first class pupil at Rushbrooke National School, rarely uses her wheelchair. “She can now walk with

walking canes and we are working very hard to get Katie up walking independently,” explained Katie’s mother, Antoinette. “She has taken some independent steps but she needs to get more confidence and strength in her legs to allow her to walk on her own.” Antoinette stated that Katie’s operations would not have been possible if it “wasn’t for the kindness of so many people in Ireland and beyond” who helped raise a staggering €60,000 to fund the surgeries in St Louis. However, Antoinette added there is still a “long long road” to get Katie walking independently. Physiotherapy will be ongoing for the next two years to allow Katie’s muscles to build, and she will also return to St Louis this October for her one–year check–up. “Thankfully the expenses this time aren’t as high,” said Antoinette. “This time it will only

cost $1,000 to see Dr Park and to have five days of physiotherapy while she is there along with our travel expenses. A big difference to the high costs the last time.” The family are in the process of getting a stability dog for Katie from Blarney–based Irish Dogs for the Disabled, with the chosen dog, Fifi, set to help Katie with her posture and enable her to walk without canes. “Our aim for Katie is to have her up walking independently for her communion in 2016,” said Antoinette. “It would be so fantastic for Katie to be able to walk up the aisle with her friends instead of having to use her walking canes.”

“She can now walk with walking canes and we are working very hard.”

Hook uncorked George Hook reflects on growing old, and whether some people are trying too hard to ignore the tramp of time... george@thecorknews.ie

T

here are a few unwritten rules and guidelines that should generally be adhered to if one wishes to grow old gracefully. This is not to suggest that yours truly is the perfect example of pensionhood, but even if my actions sometimes fall below the required gold standard, my intentions are usually well meaning. Some of today’s mid–life crises would make the ancestral equivalent of fifty years ago seem like a mild mood swing. Where once a new haircut and a pungent aftershave constituted a mid–forties freak out, now it’s a brand new sports car, a divorce, a twentysomething sex partner and a face lift. And that’s just the men. Bad bleach jobs have also become par for the course among senior business executives who, desperate to adjust their physical appearance to match their growing immaturity, would think nothing of emptying the entire contents of a bottle of black hair dye over themselves and rocking into work the following day with a head like a bats’ nest. It is happening all the time. Last year, true as god, a well– known balding broadcaster arrived into work one morning with a brand new set of hair plugs dotted incoherently across his head. One minute the guy is clinging on to the last few remaining grey tufts above his neck and the next he turns up looking like a squirrel fell asleep on his head. And the best part was he acted like nothing had changed! Not so much as a passing mention. Women are just as bad. Last weekend, on the same day that Hilary Clinton announced her intention to run for the office of President of the United States of America, Madonna was busy shoving her 56– year–old tongue down a young man’s throat. For anyone who missed Ma-

donna’s latest embarrassment, it was a bit like watching old Aunty Betty forcing herself onto the nephew’s best friend. The man in question, young enough to be her grandson, looked visibly nauseous afterwards. Madonna, true to form, seemed completely oblivious to her inappropriate behaviour. Denial is a wonderful mirror though, don’t you think? Granted, Madonna is not exactly a modicum of dignity and grace in her advancing years. Sometimes it seems like the queen of pop would do anything to arrest the ageing process, including treading that ever–so–fine line between cougar dating and toyboy chasing. Clinton, on the other hand, was quite remarkable in maintaining her composure throughout the epitome of the

UNREAL DEALS

male mid–life crisis. The biggest problem for Hilary was that her husband just happened to be the President of the United States of America when he was busy ‘not having sexual relations’ with an intern in the Oval Office. Something about Hilary’s sticking power throughout the Lewinsky scandal is to be admired. Yet, at the same time, part of me was slightly bothered by it all. Is Hilary the confident, intelligent, brave leader she sets herself out to be? The type of trustworthy candidate that would make a fine president after the next election? Or is she the type of vulnerable, insecure person that puts up with a cheating husband just to pursue the dream of power? If the latter is the case, there

“It was a bit like watching old Aunty Betty forcing herself onto the nephew’s best friend.”

is something rather unsettling about it all. Hilary’s greatest obstacle is convincing Americans that she is fit for office because she is the best candidate running, not because she is a woman. Back to growing old gracefully. One of the great advantages of old age is the realisation that wisdom is impossible for the inexperienced. The physical deterioration that comes with the ageing process can be offset, slightly, with the knowledge that there are thousands of life lessons in the memory bank. This may be scant consolation for the frustrated 60– year–old sportsman trying to sustain previous prowess, but in general, wisdom has its rewards. The secret to growing old

gracefully is to embrace the ageing process and use the experience gained to compensate for other inconveniences. Battling against the tide is exhausting and pointless, so I find that the best way to welcome the advancing years is simply to go with the flow. If the hair starts to thin, embrace the baldness. If the body tires more easily than it used to, rest up more frequently. And if the golf swing just ain’t what it was ten years ago, shift down a club. A friend of mine always insisted that the innocence of youth is wasted on the young. But, as some of my earlier examples might suggest, in later life impeding the inexorable march of time can be disconcerting and even a bit embarrassing.

Moll Goggin still waits Efforts are underway to save a historic Cork landmark, after Cork County Council this week decided against footing its €300,000 restoration bill. Moll Goggin’s corner is a six–metre–squared balcony overlooking Youghal harbour that has been fenced off since 2008, when significant cracks were noticed in its structure. The balcony sits on compacted clay over a sandstone sea cliff that has been diminished by erosion, and it is thought the structure will eventually collapse into the sea. While initial council estimates held that it would cost

around €180,000 to restore the balcony, it now appears the cost will be closer to €300,000. Considering the cost of repairs, Cork County Council has decided to allow the collapse of the balcony into the Celtic Sea below. The position at present is that no funding has been made available for the refurbishment of the feature, which marks the spot, left, where Moll Goggin is said to have watched the horizon daily for the return of a lover who never came home. “Nobody wants to see the balcony collapse. It’s a very prominent feature of the walkway, and allows for

Bus strike has ‘strong support’ There is strong support for industrial action among Bus Éireann workers in Cork, according to a SIPTU representative in the city. SIPTU drivers in Dublin Bus and Bus Éireann voted over 90 percent in favour of industrial and strike action in a ballot counted on Friday, April 10th. As reported in The Cork News, several hundred Cork transport workers in a number of unions gave their opinions on the matter. SIPTU is now considering issuing formal notice of industrial action next Friday, April 24th, due to fears over job security and the security of union members’ pension contributions. According to SIPTU Transport Sector Organiser Willie Noone, the proposed privatisation of 10 percent of Bus Éireann routes may wipe out members’ pensions: “If their route is privatised, our members may be forced to work for a private operator. If this happens, anything up to 30 years of pension contributions will be gone. “While we have received government communication that CIÉ pensions may be honoured by private contractors, this would require new

legislation. It’s not a simple process. “Furthermore, if our members decide they don’t want to go to work for a private contractor and jeopardise their pension contributions, they could be forced to transfer to the other end of the country,” he told The Cork News. Meanwhile, Paul Lawton, a Cork SIPTU member, said the industrial action is being con-

sidered in order to “stand up” for colleagues in Waterford, where Bus Éireann’s depot is at risk of outright closure due to the proposed privatisation of certain routes. “We need to protect our members and our jobs. You have to stand up and fight for yourself. Bus Éireann’s Waterford depot will be wiped out. We need to protect our members,” reiterated Mr Lawton. “We don’t want to bring the country to a standstill, surely the government don’t either,” he told The Cork News. Minister for Transport Paschal Donohoe has said that pension contributions will be honoured, regardless of privatisation: “I have given the commitment that if anyone does need to transfer, their existing terms and conditions will be maintained” he said.

Yes Equality Cork’s official launch Advocacy group Yes Equality Cork — who are pushing for a ‘Yes’ vote in May’s equality referendum — have officially launched their campaign. Attended by former Cork hurler Dónal Óg Cusack and Mrs Brown’s Boys actress Eilish O’Carroll, the event was held at the group’s 8 North Mall headquarters. “The launch exceeded all expectations — we had a fantastic turnout. It was a great way to officially launch the campaign,” said Ken Curtin, Yes Equality Cork director, speaking to The Cork News. Speaking of last month’s announcement of Simon Coveney as director of elections for the referendum, Mr Curtin told The Cork News of his hopes that the appointment would encourage Cork TDs to become involved in the campaign. According to Mr Curtin, a number of Cork representatives have since supported Yes Equality Cork’s work: “All of the Cork South Central TDs bar Michael McGrath have taken part in canvassing. Billy Kelleher and Kathleen Lynch have continued their work in North Central, as has

Senator Colm Burke. Mr Curtin said that while support for the ‘Yes’ campaign is not as strong in rural constituencies, a number of Cork representatives from outside the city have worked with the group. “Dara Murphy, Seán Sherlock and Michael McCarthy have all played an active role, and Áine Collins is chairing a public debate that will feature Cork’s ‘No’ campaign,” he said. The debate will make for one of the first public appearances of Yes Equality Cork’s opposing advocacy group. While the ‘No’ campaign may have “money and troops behind them,” Mr Curtin is confident in facing them: “I have no worries going up against the ‘No’ side, as logic and truth are on our side,” he said.

“Are e-cigarettes really the better option?” is just one of the questions set to be dealt with at SciFest at CIT today, Friday, April 17th. Showcasing 138 projects from 340 secondary school students, the winners of SciFest2015@CIT will progress to November’s national final. “SciFest encourages students of all abilities to participate in a science fair and experience what it is like to be a professional research scientist, and to develop an interest in science through inquiry and activities that link to their everyday lives,” said Dr Hugh McGlynn, CIT. SciFest will delve into the weird, wonderful and astonishing in Bishopstown all day today, centred around CIT’s Faculty of Engineering and Science.

I

like sitting with my Spanish and Italian friends in Fitzgerald’s Park in the nice weather. Just one problem. We never seem to attract any nice Cork boys. Have you any idea what we could try? Maria, Madrid and Turners Cross.

Y

ou could try taking off all your clothes, Maria. You and your hot–blooded friends are at a bit of a disadvantage here. You are sitting around in jumpers and jeans because you think it’s cold. Meanwhile there is a gang of Cork girls sitting next to you wearing what looks like denim knickers. Or as they call, them, shorts. You’ll need a pair of those. It wouldn’t hurt if you were also drinking from a two litre of cider and shouting out “it’s like the Ba-haa-maz gurl” at the top of your voice. Ba-haa-maz is Cork for roasting. It’s the opposite of SighBeeeery-A. Good luck in the hunt for a nice Cork boy. There aren’t many. I should know.

W

hat’s the story bud? Myself and the bird are planning a bit of a dirty weekend in Cork starting tomorrow. What would you recommend?

Dirty auld Derek, Dublin. (That’s what the lads call me. My real name is Derek.)

W

Email your dilemmas in confidence to drmagoo@thecorknews.ie

ell, I know where I’ll be for the weekend: Somewhere other than Cork. I’d be afraid that I’d hear you and the ‘bird’ talkin’ dirty in your Dublin accents. Bit of vomit in the mouth there just thinking about it. I might even go to Killarney for a couple of days. That’s how bad it is. I think you would enjoy someplace where no one bats an eye when a couple starts getting jiggy with it in public. Have you ever heard of Kinsale? Seriously, they’ll be too busy wife swapping to notice that you and the bird have set about making mini–Dubs. It’s wrong in so many ways.

“At McCarthy’s, we won’t make a Drama out of your crisis, when it comes to a claim.”

“All Paudie gets out of it is a couple of free tracksuits and the choice of any woman in Reardens. Poor Paudie.”

H

ow are things? My son Hugh Junior started hanging around with a rough crowd and is after developing an interest in hurling. As you can imagine we’re very worried. He wants me to bring him to a Munster championship match. Have you any tips for me?

Hugh, we’ve three nannies you know, Sundays Well.

T

here are two things I’ve learned from going to hurling matches: You’re taking all kinds of chances standing downwind from a Tipperary man, and never smile at anyone from Limerick. Now, about the match itself. The important thing is to get behind the Cork team. For a while. Then, you should turn against them. It’s not unusual for 30,000 Cork people to shout “no fault Paudie boy!” in the first half. It’s highly unusual if this hasn’t turned into “we always knew you were a langer!” with 20 minutes to go. All Paudie gets out of it is a couple of free tracksuits and the choice of any woman in Reardens. Poor Paudie.

T

op o’ the mornin’ to ya. Is it the way I would be lookin’ for an authentic experience when meself and me good wife visit the grand old county of Cork? Indeed and it is, to be shure. Li Zhang, Beijing.

I

think I know what happened here. You used Google translate to convert Chinese into Traditional Auld Oirish. I will advise you in that language so that it converts back. If it is the way that you would like to travel back in time, get away with you down to Dunmanway. Shure half the population there haven’t changed in years and meself referring to their underwear in the hope of a cheap laugh. And if it’s an Irish man jumping up and down like a Leprechaun you are after, walk down to Blackrock and ask one of the rich looking locals if it is the way that they are a Norrie, begorrah.

I

really hope you can help me, Doc. I’m like a really nervous traveller and I’ve gotta take the train from Dublin to Cork next week, where my cousin is going to meet me at the station. Like, how can I make sure she will be there when I arrive?

Woody, New York, a city that frightens me in many ways.

D

on’t worry Woody, we have you covered. Cork people have evolved a very sophisticated way to make sure there is always someone to meet them at the station. Here is the two step guide. 1: Wait until the train arrives in Mallow. 2: Send your cousin a text that reads “I am in Mallow.” It’s foolproof, Woody. If you send “I am in Mallow” to a wrong number, the recipient will come straight back with “I’m very sorry to hear that.” One more thing. Woody; relax boy. You’ll be out of Dublin soon enough.

Flotilla to remember Lusitania Cobh is to remember the Lusitania rescue efforts with a memorial flotilla symbolising the emotional return to land of boats filled with victims and survivors after the tragedy on May 7th, 1915. As part of the Lusitania centenary commemorations, fishing boats, leisure craft and small commercial boats — each illuminated with searchlights and white lights — will sail from Roche’s Point past Cobh’s waterfront promenade to Whitepoint at 9pm on Thursday, May 7th, re– enacting the rescue efforts of their ancestors who came to the aid of the RMS Lusitania, torpedoed by a German U-boat. Cork County Council purchases Mallow Town Park Cork County Council has signed contracts for the purchase of Mallow Town Park. The purchase will provide the opportunity to develop the park as an amenity, and to exploit Mallow’s tourist industry over the coming years: “The acquisition of Mallow

Town Park will be of tremendous benefit to Mallow and its environs. While it will impose considerable responsibilities on Cork County Council, it is incumbent on us that these lands are protected and safeguarded in the interest and on behalf of the community,” said

John Paul O’ Shea, Chairman of the Kanturk/Mallow Municipal District. “This is a major development in securing the future potential of Mallow as a social, active and community resource for the town,” added Cllr O’Shea.

From Cork to the Arctic A sailing route between Cork and Arctic Circle areas of Norway is to be developed through a major maritime tourism research project. Cork Institute of Technology has received funding valued at €1.26m to develop a coordinated cruising route, with the overall project to be managed by Dr Breda Kenny, head of the Hincks Centre for Entrepreneurship Excellence at CIT. “While the project is about yacht cruising, its key objective is to provide a

Family campaigns for “life saving” help The family of a Cork teenager with anorexia nervosa this week picketed the HSE’s offices on the Model Farm Road, campaigning for “life saving treatment” for the 17–year–old girl. Keeley Hegarty told the 96FM Opinion Line of the plight of her sister, who is currently being cared for at Cork University Hospital. “She weighs three kilos more than my seven–year– old son. At the moment she’s the heaviest she’s been in five months. She’s 42 kilos. “She thinks she’s ok. She doesn’t understand why she’s in the hospital,” she said. Ms Hegarty said that her family has been told that treatment at CUH has not worked, and that specialised care in the UK is required. Despite this, the family says that funding for the care has not been made available.

Water prosecution “political suicide” Anti-water charges movement We Won’t Pay has again claimed the Irish court system will be unable to cope with the potential numbers of people boycotting the bills which are beginning to fall through letterboxes all over Cork. It has been reported that the Courts Service has told the Department of the Environment that pursuing householders not paying the charge would place an “excessive burden” on an “overstretched” system. “It’s clear that hundreds of thousands of people will refuse to pay the charges. It’s very hard to see how the courts services will deal with anything more than a small fraction of that,” Councillor Mick Barry of We Won’t Pay told The Cork News. With the first quarterly bills last week arriving in an estimated 37,000 Irish homes, Cork’s first bills are expected this week. Cllr Barry however maintains that those refusing to pay are unlikely to face penalties: “It’s unlikely that anyone will be prosecuted this

national boycott in the Cork region,” said Cllr Barry. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Department of Environment insisted the consultation with the Courts Service was a matter of procedure: “The department consulted with the Courts Service in re-

lation to the new legislation that Minister Kelly is to bring forward to deal with those who won’t pay. “It is normal practice when looking at introducing new legislation to consult with State agencies and government departments. “In response to that, the

Having a rally good time

Selling Cork stateside Two Cork tourism sector businesses have just returned from a weeklong US trade mission, selling the Cork region to influential US travel experts. The River Lee Hotel and Fota House, Arboretum and Gardens were represented on Tourism Ireland’s ‘Jump into Ireland’ sales blitz, which targeted the cities of Georgia, Charlotte and Tampa. It is hoped the programme, which involved hour–long television show format productions highlighting Ireland and networking sessions with travel and lifestyle journalists, will help grow the tourism industry in County Cork.

“The United States is one of the most important markets for tourism.” Tourism, and especially theme tourism such as eco tourism and gourmet or “food and drink” tourism, have been

identified as major growth areas for Cork in particular. “The United States is one of the most important markets for tourism to the island of Ireland and 2014 was a record year for American visitors to Ireland. “Tourism Ireland is determined to ensure that tourism growth continues, and 2015 has got off to a positive start, with the most recent CSO figures showing growth of seven percent in visitor numbers from North America for the December 2014 to February 2015 period,” said Alison Metcalfe, Tourism Ireland’s head of North America.

Daytripper Gerry Murphy (62) is a poet and Mayfield Leisure Centre–based lifeguard. He launches his new collection 'Muse' in the Triskel Arts Centre next Thursday, April 23rd at 8.30pm.

I’d normally wake up around 8.30am, and read in bed until about 10am. I’m very lazy like that. I’ve just finished Moby Dick, and now I’m reading Richard Ellman’s Oscar Wilde biography. It helps ease me into the day. Sometimes, I’ll wake up in the morning and have an idea for a poem in my head. I can write anywhere, which is very handy. I’ve never needed a special place. I can write on the back of a cigarette packet in a disco toilet. For me, love poems are the ones that last; that are universal. The first poem in my first collection was called Poem in One Breath; it opens with: ‘Not that you would notice, but every time you pass up the corridor, Lenin’s statue levitates slightly…’ I wanted to mix the political and the personal. The whole idea of Lenin’s statue, that he would be so moved by this woman. I’d probably be shot for it in the old Soviet states, for playing with the icons of communism. I read that poem for the woman who inspired me. I got a positive reaction, I think. She didn’t go sending me solicitors’ letters or anything like that. She was a swimming teacher up here in Mayfield, and she seemed to like it. I started swimming competitively at the age of 12, which is fairly late, really. I took up water polo after that, and became a lifeguard in Mayfield about 20 years ago. They were down one lifeguard in the pool, so they told me to ‘man up’ and take the tests. I usually work in the pool from 3pm to 11pm, and beforehand I like to go to the Farmgate Café in the English Market. They’ve great food there. Most of it is sourced in the market itself. Normally I’d go for a toasted sandwich. I head straight home after work at 11pm for a light supper. That should be a glass of wine — anything red and

French — and a sandwich, but usually, I’ll just have a glass of Coke. I go through new poems on the computer then. You’re always working on the next book. I’ve a new book coming out this month, but I have the bones of the next one on the computer now. I don’t think I ever decided I wanted to be a poet. It’s something you kind of

fall into rather than decide. When I was in school, about 14 or 15, I started writing pastiches of stuff on the syllabus: half–mad versions of MacBeth with my teachers as characters. My uncle was very interested in literature and he started giving me these fascinating Don Camillo books. They were extremely subversive, and I don’t think he realised how subversive

they were. I don’t know why he gave them to me, because he was a very religious man. I remember there was one about an Italian parish priest who has this long–running battle with a communist mayor. Instead of sympathising with the priest, I sympathised with the mayor; I don’t think that was my uncle’s intention! I think my mother was very

“At McCarthy’s, we won’t make a Drama out of your crisis, when it comes to a claim.”

quite subversive too. They’re only impressions I have — I was 11 when she died. I was told by one of my teachers in school that she was a poet, which was news to me. I couldn’t find any evidence of it. Apparently she used to write long letters to her brother, who was a priest in New Zealand. I think her attitude — that subversion — was definitely passed on to

me. I suppose I have anarchist leanings. I’d have romantic notions about Buenaventura Durruti and the Catalonian anarchists in the Spanish Civil War. I just don’t agree with the idea of parties — being a ‘party man.’ Even socialism isn’t for me in that sense. You’re going to step outside that line. That’s human nature. I generally stay away from political poems, though: they can be very ‘of the moment.’ It was one of the Chinese leaders — Zhou Enlai I think — who was asked in the 60s what did he think about the 1789 French Revolution, and he said that it was ‘too early to tell.’ I’d go along with him. You can respond too early to political events. You write a political poem, then when you return to it three years later, you’d need notes to understand it. For inspiration, it’s always the same with me. Something has to stir me, and I respond. I’m always shifting things around, trying out new patterns. After my supper, I could say I’m going to do ten minutes and end up still awake an hour and a half later. You just lose a sense of time. It doesn’t take me too long to fall asleep after writing. I could be better. I usually read myself to sleep. I think my problem is having CocaCola before I go to bed, which probably keeps me awake a small bit longer. I like to keep music playing, and since I discovered Lyric FM, my dial has been kind of been stuck there. With classical music, I like it all, really: Mozart, Beethoven, Berlioz, even Britten. Before dozing off, my head is usually clear. I’m just grateful for being here in the first place. The fact that I can maybe reach one or two people with my writing, give them some enjoyment, that’s enough.”

A radical approach to tackle the drugs crisis is being sought, with new proposals coming just hours before the nation witnessed two paramedics called to a scene of a heroin overdose in Cork city centre. The first episode of fly–on–the–wall series Paramedics aired on TV3 on Thursday featuring advanced paramedic Peter Delea and paramedic Imelda O’Shea Coughlan. The camera crew followed the Cork paramedics to an emergency on the Grand Parade after two girls rang 999 when they saw a man passed out on the street. On arrival Peter and Imelda brought the man, who had overdosed on heroin, into the ambulance to give him the drug Naloxone, which blocks the effects of the opiate. However, the man subsequently became extremely violent and ripped out his IV tubes before demanding to be allowed to leave. Ms O’Shea Coughlan outlined there was a “risk of blood exposure because he was waving his hand around the place with blood dripping off his arm”. “There was no reasoning with the gentleman,” she said. “You can’t forcibly keep them in the ambulance because at that stage (after being given Naloxone), they are fully with it, they’re capable of looking after themselves.” Mr Delea added that it is rare to get a “really bad reaction” from somebody. “A paramedic’s job is helping people,” he said. “Sometimes it can be a reassuring smile, it can be just being there for somebody and

“He was waving his hand around the place with blood dripping off his arm.” listening, and sometimes it is about the big skills: the trauma and bringing big interventions, drugs and therapies.” The show aired just hours after Fianna Fáil published a National Drugs Action Plan to respond to the escalating drugs

crisis, and the changes in patterns of drug abuse including poly–drug use and the sale and abuse of prescription drugs. The plan is the result of extensive consultation with groups, agencies and individuals working to tackle drug abuse at community level, and includes the appointment of a Minister for Drugs. The minister would have responsibility for pulling together all the existing services in the areas of health, justice, social services and local government. Under the plan, a Drug Related Intimidation Strategy would also be developed to support users and their families who are currently “tortured” by drug debt, along with strengthening the roles of regional drug and alcohol taskforces, and ensuring that treatment and rehabilitation services have comprehensive aftercare structures.

Exhibition captures old Macroom A late Macroom publican who created an archive of 20,000 photographs of weddings, communions and sporting events in the area over decades now has his work displayed at University College Cork. Thirty years after the death of Dennis Dinneen, an exhibition of his work, Small Town Portraits, is in the university’s Boole Library, running until Saturday, June 27th. Mr Dinneen was a publican and photographer in Macroom during the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s, with the exhibition focusing on portraits and ID im-

ages selected from the 6,000 photographs that have been scanned over the past two years by curator David J Moore and Dennis’ son, Laurence. Mr Moore describes these portraits as having “an unusual informality that occasionally reveals an awkwardness between subject and camera”. He added: “The mix of off-kilter compositions, wallpapers, backdrops and small juxtapositions within the frame make for unique and often humorous moments. He had a wonderful eye mixed with talent, technique and fantastic wit.”

The search for history Artefacts linked to one of the largest schools in Cork are being sought to mark its 50th year in existence. Fota wins EU prize The restored walled garden at Fota has won an EU Cultural Heritage Prize. Fota is among 28 award winners chosen by The European Commission and Europa Nostra, considered Europe’s most prestigious prize in the heritage field. The garden of the regency house was entered in the Awareness Raising category. The jury said they “appreciated” the range of initiatives which stemmed from the decision to restore and re–use the garden for future productivity and the public ben-

efit. The restoration was completed in 2011, and has been succeeded by a programme of training for Fota’s staff and a large team of volunteers. The gardens have also become an engine of the estate, with plants, flowers, fruit and vegetables cultivated both for use on site and for sale to visitors. The profits from these sales are invested directly back into the project, for expansion and towards the longer–term goals of other garden restoration projects. The European Heritage Awards Ceremony

Big bets on Sheehy success By Maria Tracey maria@thecorknews.ie

A Munster punter has placed a four–figure wager on Cork native John Sheehy to win The Voice of Ireland. The 28–year–old yoga instructor, who is originally from Carrignavar but now lives in the city, is through to the semi–finals of the show, one of just eight contestants still left in the competition. Bookmakers BoyleSports are reporting a surge of support for John to win the fourth series of the show, with his odds now cut from 8/1 to 3/1. PR executive at BoyleSports Liam Glynn stated: “We have been flooded with bets for John Sheehy to win, with one punter in the Munster region placing a four figure wager on the Cork native at 8/1. “After laying the bet, our

“It’s incredible motivation to know that someone has that faith in me!” traders cut John Sheehy into 5/1 but the support didn’t dry up which has now seen him backed further into 3/1. He is now by far the worst result in the book and at present is a five figure loss.” Currently rocker John Bonham and Patrick Donoghue are inseparable at the head of the betting, both at 7/4.

Speaking to The Cork News, John said the news that a punter has dug deep in support of him is “one of the most amazing things”. “It’s incredible motivation to know that someone has that faith in me!” he told us. “I’m in total shock.” On the show this Sunday, to be aired on RTÉ One at 6.30pm, John will be singing Sugar by Maroon 5. “The song is a great track and very current, but I have a lot of work to do to make sure it has good dynamic because modern songs are very heavily produced,” he explained. “I am incredibly excited to get out on stage again after last week though. I definitely have an extra motivation in knowing that people have had so much confidence in me that they put their hard–earned cash down. I want to work extra hard to beat the bookies for once!”

Joe Dolan: Still hip A Cork woman is selling what she says is Joe Dolan’s autographed hipbone, which she originally bought for €690 on eBay. Maggie Keating from Mitchelstown, a Joe fan since the age of 17, told Red FM the bone made for an interesting ornament: “It was always nice to look up and see it. It was on display in my house but then some people would pretend to bite it as a joke or throw it to the dog, so I wrapped it up and put it away in case it would break,” the 39 year old said. As eBay now prohibits the sale of body parts, Ms Keating is searching for a buyer elsewhere. “I don’t know how much it would even be worth, but I have had my joy from it and now maybe it’s time for someone else, if I could get the right money for it,” she said.

Cork school is Ireland’s fittest A Cork comprehensive school has been this week named as Ireland’s fittest school using the first ever measure measurement of fitness norms for teens. Announced by Irish rugby international Robbie Henshaw and Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring, Boherbue Comprehensive School is the winner of the Aviva Health Schools’ Fitness Challenge 2015. Measured by the number of

successful shuttle runs completed by competing schools, the Cork school finished a cumulative 133 runs to claim top spot. The challenge measured the fitness of 1st to 4th year secondary school children over the course of the last three years, using data from 58,000 children. Some of the key findings from the study include that while girls’ fitness remained constant between the ages of 12 and 16, there was a

gradual increase in boys, with males in their mid teens now 53 percent fitter than females. The fitness level of both Irish girls and boys are above the European average, with Irish teens and they currently sitting in the top 20 percent. Connacht player Henshaw said of the challenge, “It is so important to stay fit and healthy when you’re young and I hope all those that participated this year will keep up the good work.”

Amy is 10yrs old and was suffering from seasonal asthma, we usually do 5-8 sessions twice a year, and this has improved her asthma greatly, she does not need her inhaler and her health and well being has strengthened greatly. Amy sleeps much better now and gets a full nights sleep without any attacks, Amys asthma always started in the evening and she would get no sleep with it. Since discovering SALT THERAPY there is no looking back.

Paws for thought

Talk to us

Every week, Cork's animal shelters are called upon to take care of our city's injured, abandoned and unwanted animals. After veterinary treatment and plenty of TLC, these rescued cats and dogs are ready to start a new life with a loving owner. If you have the budget, time, space and commitment to welcome an animal into your home, adopting a rescue animal might be the right option for you. Meet this week's furry friends of The Cork News, courtesy of Cork Dog Action Welfare Group — affectionately known as DAWG!

We want to hear from you! Email your thoughts, comments, reactions and announcements to editor@thecorknews.ie

Ben the Collie X

Ben is a handsome collie cross, about four years old. He is extremely intelligent — for instance, he has no problem opening doors — but very obedient, and once you gain his trust he is very loyal and loving. Ben’s good with other dogs and loves children, but as he’s a very strong and lively dog he needs a home with children over five. Ben loves playing fetch, so its easy to tire him out as he’ll do it all day. An enclosed garden a must. Millie the German Collie This is Millie. She’s an eight– month–old collie/shepherd cross. She’s still a pup and full of energy, and she loves her walks and playing fetch: whether it’s a ball or a stick she’ll bring it back and drop it at your feet. Millie is great with other dogs and good with slightly older kids, but she’s bigger than she thinks she is and might knock over younger children. Millie isn’t quite there yet with toilet training but is paper trained. She loves her cuddles but as she’s convinced she’s very small has a lot of trouble fitting onto someone’s lap! Whoever adopts this lady into their family will be very lucky.

Dear Sir, I would like to address legitimate worries around the issue of surrogacy that some may have. As a child who grew up in the sixties and seventies in Ireland I learned that girls bore the brunt of societal disapproval of sex outside of marriage. To have a child and to be unmarried brought shame on the girl and her then illegitimate child. Now in the 21st century it is hard to believe that a differentiation should be made about a child based on the marital status of their mother. It is still undesirable that girls should become pregnant before they are ready to become a good parent. We therefore need to build systems that

support good parenting. The desire to have a child and the societal supports that should be in place for people who wish to parent a child is a very complex issue. Surrogacy is now possible and scientific advances mean that children can be born to people that are not their biological parents. We need rules around these scientific advances. We safe guard the supply of blood by keeping it an altruistic donation system on the part of the donor. We can also develop a system of rules around the area of surrogacy that safeguards the best interests of the children. There is no scientific evidence that parenting effectiveness is related to parental sexual orientation.

Lesbian and gay parents are as likely as heterosexual parents to provide supportive and healthy environments for their children. Ireland has become a more honest and tolerant place in my lifetime. It is a change that I welcome. I hope that people who are fearful of the consequences for children of the marriage equality referendum consider the evidence. What matters is that children are reared in supportive and loving families and that society builds systems that support those families. Dr Colette Finn. 20 Croaghta Park, Glasheen, Cork

Dear Lorcan, This Sunday, April 19th, Fota House and Gardens will host its annual plant and garden fair from 11am to 4pm. Approximately eighty specialist nurseries will attend and provide an opportunity for visitors to purchase unusual and special plants. Fota House will also be open for patrons to view its art collection. Volunteers from Fota House and from the Friends of Marymount Hospice will assist with the running of the fair and a substantial donation will be given to this very worthy charity. Admission is €8. Archie the Husky X

Archie is a husky cross, four years old, fully house trained, great with kids, smart, affectionate and full of energy. He very rarely barks and has a love for swimming, running around and Denta sticks. Archie has had all his vaccinations, has been neutered, is a King of Paws training graduate, has his pet passport and is very well groomed. He would make a truly exceptional pet, but needs an owner willing to go for lots of walks and play lots of games to use up all that energy.

Awards for Cork Airport Cork Airport has received two nominations in the 2015 Aviation Industry Awards shortlist announced by the Irish Aviation Authority. The airport, which has faced an uncertain future in recent years (see page four for more) has been nominated for the Customer Service Award, which it won at last year’s inaugural ceremony, and is one

of just two nominees for the Aviation Sustainability & Environment Award — a further boost for Cork’s impressive green credentials, following international ‘Green Flag’ recognition for UCC and CUH. Speaking about the nominations Cork Airport Managing Director Niall MacCarthy said: “To be recognised by our

peers in the aviation sector is a great achievement and real acknowledgement of the hard work that the entire team at Cork Airport puts in each day. Over the past year, we have introduced improvements including investing in our customer information area and launching a new flight tracking feature on our app, which is a first for an Irish airport.”

New leaders at CIT’s Rubicon Cork’s Rubicon Centre, Ireland’s leading business innovation hub, is celebrating the achievements of twelve entrepreneurs who have successfully completed the prestigious New Frontiers Entrepreneur Development Programme, funded by Enterprise Ireland. Mobile gaming, composite recycling, food innovation, consumer products, industrial solutions, enterprise software, e–commerce, digital media and digital storage have all featured in the new business roster at the centre over the past nine months. Each participant received €15,000 in financial support. Minister Simon Coveney commended the graduates, saying “the future of Ireland’s economy is extremely promising and programmes such as New Frontiers ensures that those with strong business ideas can gain the support where needed to build and expand, and importantly create jobs in the future.”

“At McCarthy’s, we won’t make a Drama out of your crisis, when it comes to a claim.”

Make a Mess!

N

obody’s quite sure where the term “Eton Mess” came from in relation to this delicious dessert. It may be that the simplest explanation is the right one: This is a cake that is at its best when it’s a little higgledypiggledy and is usually served with a certain lack of finesse. It may also come from the

association with “mess” as in “mess hall” at a military barracks, though Eton’s refectory was never known by this name. It could also be from the now– rare use of “mess” to mean “a great big pile of (something)”, as in “a mess of porridge”. Regardless, it’s delicious and fun, and here’s Kilkenny Cafe @ The Shanagarry Desgin Centre head chef Fred Pillavoine’s take on it!

Ingredients: • 175g unsalted butter • 5 tbsp of cream • 1tsp vanilla extract • 225g plain flour • 100g ground almonds • 1 tsp baking powder • 200g caster sugar • Five large eggs • 400g of strawberries (half sliced, half quartered) • Four meringue nests (roughly broken up)

• A little icing sugar to serve Method: 1. Grease a deep 20x30cm roasting tin or tray bake and line with parchment. 2. Preheat the oven to 160°C/140°C (for fan ovens). 3. Melt the butter. Off the heat, stir in the cream and vanilla and then set it aside.

4. In a bowl, mix flour, almonds, baking powder and a pinch of salt, and set it aside. 5. Put the eggs and sugar in a large bowl and whisk with an electric beater until thick and foamy. 6. Pour in the butter mix and whisk until just combined. Then add the flour mix and again, whisk till just combined.

7. Fold in the quartered strawberries. Pour the batter into the tray and level the top. 8. Scatter the sliced strawberries and broken meringues over the cake and bake for 40 min or until a skewer comes out clean. 9. Cool in the tin and transfer onto a rack. Dust with icing sugar before serving with cream.

Be gluten free About 1% of Irish people suffer from coeliac disease, and many remain undiagnosed. Coeliac disease is a hypersensitivity to the protein gluten, which is found in some grains: gluten is what makes dough stretchy and springy. The disease is a genetic disorder, and falls under the header of ‘autoimmune disorders’, which means that your body is actually damaging itself by reacting badly to the gluten in food. As the disease has become better understood and more widely known in recent years, and the range of gluten–free foods for coeliacs has increased enormously. Take Scally’s SuperValu in Blackrock, for instance, where the Clonakilty Gluten

Free range provides a choice of 26 different products safe for coeliacs to eat. They’re not all obvious, either: sure, bread definitely contains gluten, but what about soup? Sauces? Shepherd’s pie?

Seafood chowder? The Clonakilty range adds to the 300 ‘Free From’ products which make Scally’s a great place to shop, especially if you have very specific dietary requirements.

A helping heart

Cork’s Cullen Allen of Cully & Sully presenting a cheque for €5,000 to Heart Children Ireland at Crumlin Children’s Hospital, where the Cully & Sully Soup team were on hand with lunch for staff, patients and even visitors to the hospital. The east Cork company turned ten years old at the end of last year, and teamed up with “a worthy charity,” in their own words, to celebrate. Heart Children Ireland is a support group for parents and families of children with a congenital heart disorder. They receive no government funding. Cully is pictured with Emma and Anna at the cheque presentation.

Run and Hyde West Cork’s native whiskey Hyde, a single malt crafted in small batches and matured in Skibbereen for the past decade, is now available to great acclaim in eleven countries around the world, including heavy–hitter whiskey markets like Germany, Switzerland, the UK, the Scandinavian countries and the $20 billion ‘super premium’ US market. The whiskey is the first of its

kk cork news advert 50x265mm march 2015 final.indd 1

kind to be matured in Skibb for over a century, and is the first fill of flame–charged oak Bourbon barrels before being transferred to Olosoro sherry casks and cut for bottling with west Cork spring water. Distiller Alan Hyde says the single malt is smooth, complex, creamy and fruity with notes of honey, caramel and drupes, lingering with a spicy, oaky finish. Just 5,000 bottles have been produced.

Time for bed Orla McLoughlin and Marianne Wall are registered Counselling Psychologists with the Psychological Society of Ireland. They are founders and directors of Smart Psychology, helping people to overcome difficulties in their lives through workshops, courses and one–to–one counselling. They’ve teamed up with The Cork News to offer practical advice to our readers. This week, how to get a better night’s sleep!

W

e have become a sleep deprived nation due to shift work patterns, increased stress and unhealthy lifestyles. The good news is that small changes can make a big difference in improving your sleep.

• Make your bedroom a pleasant place • Remove all technology from your bedroom

• Use dim lighting in the evening and bright light in the morning • Make sure you are not too hot or too cold • Do not drink caffeinated drinks such as tea or coffee after 6pm • Avoid regular consumption of alcohol • Exercise daily • Try to avoid naps longer than 30 minutes, especially after 4pm • Have a regular, relaxing bed time routine • Do a breathing exercise at night

• When in bed think of nice things • Try to wake up the same time everyday even if you are tired

Remember your bed is for sleeping, not for worrying, so if you are unable to sleep after 30 minutes get up and have a glass of water or read a magazine. Only return to bed when you feel more relaxed. If you are interested in attending a workshop to learn more tips visit smartpsychology.ie.

Grandparents who look after kids depressed A new study has shown that grandparents who spend a significant amount of time looking after their grandchildren — especially to the detriment of their own personal time, hobbies, or social lives — are more likely to suffer from depression than their peers who don’t spend as much (or any) time with responsibility for their children’s children. The Trinity College study of 7,500 grandparents contradicts the received wisdom that looking after the ‘generation after next’ is a win/ win situation for everybody, from the children’s parents to the grandparents themselves

to the State, which saves in childcare costs. As older people remain more active and dynamic much later in life, being asked to spend a lot of otherwise–productive time looking after their grandchil-

dren can lock them into a routine which many find stifling. The study has shown that better–educated grandparents are less likely to feel the effects of depression in similar circumstances to less educated grandparents.

The push against anti–vax madness In spite of mountains — if not entire continents — of evidence to the contrary, a small but incredibly loud cadré of people has been spreading the message that vaccination against any one of a number of potentially lethal diseases is somehow linked to everything from autism to ADHD to psychiatric and metabolic disorders. None of their claims are true, and the man whose work led directly to the nonsensical hysteria of the “anti vaccination” movement, Andrew Wakefield, has been thoroughly discredited, along with his methods and his conclusions. Now, as dangerous illnesses such as measles, which had been on the verge of extinction, come roaring back in deadly fashion, several jurisdictions around the world

have had enough, and are beginning to react against the unscientific, erroneous and dangerous views espoused by a movement spearheaded by the likes of Jenny McCarthy and “the Food Babe” Vani Hari. Local governments in the US and Australia, con-

Cigarette companies push back against government The government’s ‘plain packaging for cigarettes’ plan has raised the hackles of ‘Big Tobacco’ to such an extent that three of the biggest players have threatened to sue the State. Philip Morris, JTI and Imperial Tobacco have all reacted with outrage to the new law, which will see all tobacco products sold

in plain, generic packages from May next year. Vendors have been given until 2017 to use up the last of their branded packets. Dr James Reilly, who shepherded the bill through the Oireachtas, says the legislation is robust enough to survive a challenge, and that government will pursue the companies for costs.

Cork Cancer Help Programme The Cork Cancer Help Programme is for anyone over 18 years who has had diagnoses of cancer. It is a 10 week programme of weekly 2 ½ hour session. It is modelled on the Cancer Help Programme in Commonweal, San Francisco, USA. Following your diagnoses of cancer you may be left with some questions such as, You may find that the supports you had before your diagnoses were fine but your needs have changed and they might not be a support now, how do you find out what your needs are now and the support you need?

What happens when you quit? ‘Smoking is bad for you’. We all know that, and we all know that if you smoke, the biggest favour you can do for yourself and for the people around you is to quit. But what are the real benefits to your body from the second you stub out that very last cigarette? • Within eight hours, your body has shed nearly all of the nicotine in your bloodstream. Nicotine is one of the world’s most toxic substances, produced by plants as an insecticide. Four hours after that, your blood has almost shed its burden of carbon monoxide and can once again transport oxygen efficiently. 12 hours later again, and the worst part of the cravings begins. It’ll be a tough few days, but it’ll be worth it.

• Another day later, and the nerves in your mouth and nose are starting to wake up from a nicotine– and smoke–induced coma. Your senses of smell and taste begin to recover. You’re very grouchy, as your brain is coming to terms with the sudden falloff in the level of nicotine in your tissues. You’ll spend the next day or so being restless and irritable because of psychological dependence, but on the plus side you’ll already notice that

you’re breathing more easily as your damaged lung tissue finally has a chance to start healing. • After a month your psychological and physical cravings are over and your body is recovering quickly. Your blood is clean, your lungs are still healing and your heart is under much less stress. Two months later, your general fitness has improved noticably as your circulato-

ry system adapts to the sudden influx of oxygen and lack of poison. Within another six months your chances of suffering a respiratory infection have been slashed. Within the year, your chance of suffering a heart attack has halved. • Ten years later your chances of contracting lung, throat or mouth cancer has more than halved. Your risk of stroke is the same as a non smoker. Your risk of losing teeth is the same as a non smoker. Another five years, and your risk of heart attack, lung, mouth, throat and pancreatic cancer is the same as a non smoker. Your life expectancy has increased dramatically. Congratulations!

You are also finding that the doctors may cure you but how do you heal? You can measure your pain on a scale of 0 to 10 but how do you measure your suffering and what to do with it? You may think about death and dying but it’s the elephant in the room, how can you talk about it? How can you stay as well as you can and what exercises can you do? These questions are explored and discussed during the 10 week programme. There is a fee of €200 and assistance is available to meet this cost on request. The Cork Cancer help programme is a not for profit Organisation

Make it to Malta SHORT BREAKS In association with Hotels.com By travel expert Carolina Annand My husband and I are hoping to have a trip abroad this May before the busy highsummer season begins. We’d love sunshine and the sea but it would be great to travel somewhere with history and interesting things to see and do. Is there anywhere that comes to mind?

I

f it’s sun and sea you’re after with a little more diversity, Malta is the place to be. Located in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea, with sunshine and warm temperatures practically guaranteed from April to September and an important history spanning 7,000 years, Malta is the ideal des-

tination to enjoy a sunshine getaway with a difference. Often mistakenly thought of as one island, the state of Malta is in fact an archipelago made up of three islands: Malta, Gozo and Comino. May is the perfect time to visit this Mediterranean destination before the searing summer temperatures kick in and, with the lion’s share of national monuments, sights and action, the eponymous main island Malta is the best place to base yourself during your stay. Said to be built by gentlemen for gentlemen, Valletta, the handsome capital city of Malta is a UNESCO World Heritage site, described as ‘one of the most concentrated historic areas in the world’. The 16th century walled capital is home to the magnificent St John’s Co-Cathedral, a gem of Baroque art and architecture and the building that houses Caravaggio’s elaborate

St Jerome III. Visit the Upper Barrakka Garden for sublime views of the delightfully honey–coloured stone city set atop sea cliffs, and the dramatic Grand Harbour. A trip to Malta wouldn’t be complete without experiencing the spectacular blue la-

goon. Make the journey to this hotspot by ferry from Sliema harbour and enjoy views of the rocky island outcrops and rural landscape. Soak in the summer sunshine on the boat’s deck and keep an eye out for Malta’s vibrant and quirky Popeye Vil-

lage, preserved from its days as the Popeye film set from the 1980s. The blue lagoon can be found off the coast of Comino and the crystal clear water, blue skies and warm temperature make the perfect conditions for snorkelling and spotting colourful fish. The

Where to Stay: Hotel Phoenicia Malta (*****) Prices start from €148 per room per night on Hotels.com The Hotel Phoenicia Malta can be found in the heart of elegant capital Valletta with important 16th century history on your doorstep. Mondeo. Ford Mondeo.

Probably the most handsome car released by Ford in decades, the new Mondeo looks to reclaim the crown in the mid–size saloon market writes Seán Creedon

T

he fifth generation of the Ford Mondeo was a bit late coming to Ireland, but I think it has been worth the wait. The new car has been available in the US for over two years, but Ford’s European production schedule was disrupted as they had to switch their manufacturing plant from Genk in Belgium to Valencia in Spain. So while the cat, in this case

a very big cat, was away, other car companies have been busy trying to make inroads into the saloon market. At the launch of their new 508 a few weeks back, Peugeot’s marketing people made no secret of the fact that the Mondeo and VW’s Passat were their main rivals. Peugeot were very bullish, saying that their new car offered a better spec than either. But really this is a cat fight between Ford and Volkswa-

gen. Having driven the new Passat recently, I think I’m in a good position to give my opinion. Basically the Mondeo is chunkier looking and probably more comfortable on a long journey, but the Passat, which was recently named European Car of the Year, is more stylish to look at. However, Ford fans can rightly claim that the new front grille on the Mondeo resembles the Aston Martin

DBS used by James Bond in Casino Royale. You can spot similar grilles on the new Fiesta, and all new Ford cars will eventually get this new– look grille. Some have taken to calling it the ‘Bondeo’. My test car came in white, which was unusual for a Mondeo, and boy it’s massive. There is a huge amout of leg room for front and rear passengers and the boot is enormous. Power is supplied by a 1.5 EcoBoost petrol engine, which is not as frugal as the 1.0 EcoBoost in the Focus. On the road this is a really comfortable motor to travel in. At first you will be amazed with the sheer enormity of the car, but like most things in life you get used to it after a few days.

My grandchildren were home the week I had the Mondeo and they loved the ‘Ski hatch’ which opens from the back seat into the boot. They had fun pushing toys into the boot, but it would take an awful lot of toys to fill the huge space and the good news is that you get a ‘mini’ spare wheel, though the Passat offers a full–size spare. Prices start at €28,995 for the Mondeo, while the 1.5 EcoBoost version I drove starts at €32,470. The Titanium version I drove had lots of extras, so remember that I am giving you only the starting price; it’s up to you as to what you can afford after that. It’s also available in 1.6 and 2.0 diesel, and a 1.0 litre Eco–Boost petrol version is coming soon.

It’s a hard call between the Mondeo and the Passat as they both start at around the same price. I was reared on Ford, so I am probably biased. In the old days, purchases often depended on what type of cars your local garage sold, but nowadays people are willing to travel for a good deal. Ford has a long association with Cork; as you know they had a factory in the Marina for many years. There are eight Ford dealers in the city and county: Abernethy and Sons, Midleton, Cavanaghs of Charleville and Fermoy, Cork City Ford Centre, Forge Hill, C.A.B. Monahan Road, Bandon Motors, Bandon, Kelleher’s Macroom and O’Brien’s Mallow.

A touch of class Lorcan MacMuiris cruises smoothly in a barely– used–at–all 2011 Passat 2.0l Diesel DSG Automatic

T

he Passat has been one of the most popular cars in Ireland for decades, and has been a mainstay of Irish motoring since the 1970s. The B5 model, which crossed over from the 20th to the 21st century, is still one of the most common cars on our roads and has aged very well, but its grandson, the B7 is considered by many to be the new ‘classic’, taking over from the slightly lacklustre B6 with great good looks and outstanding drivability. Occasionally, I get to do a used car review on a car that’s really only used in name, and this is one of those times. This gleaming 2011 TDI, fully automatic with an “is it on? I can’t hear a thing!” diesel engine to be proud of, has probably been driven around the lot at Blackwater Motors a few times and not much else, and with just 109km on the clock its price tag of €22,995 is really a bargain. It’s immaculate both inside and out, as you’d expect from a car which has seen so little action and lived in Cork’s home of Volkswagen. Everything looks, feels and smells brand new, and the driving experience matches. It’s magic–car-

pet smooth and, in contrast to The my own Passat (a sturdy B5 model, now a little long in the tooth), incredibly sophisticated, refined and quiet. It’s also a lot bigger on the inside, though only barely so on the outside. The difference is really noticable as I settle into the driver’s seat and strain to hear the engine whisper to life. This car feels airy, sturdy and safe. The display, still futuristic looking even though it’s now four years old, is the only hint that anything is going on. I steal gently out the gate, point the nose down the straight road and…well, if I were a little less cautious that would have been it. The car is so close to new that there was literally no reason for me to touch the steering wheel at all though I’d like to point out, Guard, that my hands were at “ten to two” at all times regardless. This model was a noticable step up in luxury for Volkswagen and is handsomely appointed. Its low price tag belies just how comfy and spacious it really is, and when I stop in Ballincollig I have a quick look

at the boot. It’s cavernous. My Passat is big, sure, but this one looks as if it could house a small family in relative comfort for a short stay. I nod approvingly and head for Macroom, a drive I always enjoy in spite of some odd twists and turns on the Cork side of the town. The handling is excellent, and the automatic gearbox takes every demand for power in its stride with magnificant German precision. On the Kerry side, I give her a chance to stretch her legs again and I power up the incline towards the border. Everything is so slick and smooth and…well, ‘Volkswagen’ that even the heavy traffic on the way back doesn’t seem to matter: I arrive relaxed and with a vague sense of satisfaction, even though the car did all the work. I think it may be just about time to upgrade. If you’d like to beat me to the punch (you have a little time while I negotiate with the credit union!) then call Blackwater Motors on 021 434 5900. You can even still avail of Volkswagen’s Das Welt warranty, which covers one year’s unlimited mileage.

Audi’s plans revealed

The Honda FCV on display during the 2015 Detroit International Auto Show in January

One step closer to the future Drive covered electric cars quite heavily at the end of last year and the start of this year, and have taken more than a passing interest in self–driving cars. But one of the biggest advances will come from the oldest element in the universe: hydrogen. Hydrogen is, in many ways, the perfect fuel. It burns readily, releasing a lot of energy, and leaves nothing as a waste product except pure, clean water. The main problems have been storing it, mov-

ing it and producing it: the engines are already in use all over the world in everything from trucks to cars. BMW, for instance, has a pretty nifty hydrogen–powered 7 Series model, and our picture above features Honda’s H2–powered FCV. We make hydrogen by zapping water with electricity, which isn’t cheap. Now, however, researchers in Virginia have discovered a quick and easy way to get this multipurpose gas using leftovers from

America’s gigantic maize industry. Enzymes break down the maize’s sugars to form CO2 and H2 up to ten times faster than current methods. This means that electric cars may only be, as many have said, a stop gap between our dirty hydrocarbon fuels and the clean, abundant, super– efficient hydrogen energy of the future. H2 cars will be cheaper to produce, lighter and more powerful than electric cars as well, so watch this space!

The Audi Prologue

This gorgeous beast may not look it, but Audi insists that it is — or will be, when it makes it to market — an off–road vehicle. More precisely, they describe the Prologue as an “all road vehicle”, emphasising

its dual nature. Technically, the Prologue is a successor to the magnificent Audi Allroad Quattro, which established the class, and the Germans describe this 5.13–metre behemoth as “a study” and a “fresh interpretation” of

sporty vs. rugged. Its interior is the size of a small cathedral, and a major point of pride for the Vorsprung Durch Technik crowd is the full–width touchscreen dashboard. We like it. We like it a lot.

Getting stuck in Trafic Renault has been Number 1 in the LCV market in Europe for over seventeen years, and dealer principal at Kearys Renault Cork, Brendan Keary, believes Renault vans are the most popular in their range because of their price, reliability and versatility. The Trafic, Master and Kangoo have been the must-have for Cork’s tradesmen and remain among the best sellers Leeside. The position as one of the market leaders has been heightened as Renault recently introduced a new five–year warranty on all new vans, the

longest of its kind in Ireland. Kearys Renault Cork is one of four Renault Pro Plus dealers in Ireland, which brings

the assurance that Kearys has an after sales team which is exclusively dedicated to business customers.

Cork Triathlete in World’s Top-50 Cork triathlete Bryan Keane has moved into the top 50 in the World Triathlon series after a top–30 finish in the Australian Gold Coast leg of the series. Keane completed the opening 1500 metre swim in a time of 18.50, before closing in on the event’s main peloton over the course of a 40–kilo-

Donncha O’Callaghan speaks on Barbarians —v— Ireland Donncha O’Callaghan, last summer capped by the Barbarians, has said the legendary side famous for their off–the–cuff play will provide a real test for Ire-

land in Thomond Park this May. “Joe Schmidt’s great on the details, but how can they defend if they don’t know what the opposition

are going to be doing? “This is also a chance for Ireland to learn something about the strength in depth of their squad. You need a scrap for every place,” he

said. Ireland play Barbarians on Thursday, May 28th at 7.45pm. Adult tickets are €30 from munsterrugby.ie/tickets.

Leevale runner wins international race by seven minutes

Cork hurlers’ semi–final showdown Cork’s hurlers are to face Dublin in the semi–finals of the Allianz Hurling League Division this Sunday, April 19th. The last time the sides met,

Cork came out on top, winning by a score of 0-34 to 1-20 in Croke Park. Regardless, Midelton wing–forward Conor Lehane said he is ex-

pecting a “very tough game.” “You have to have respect for every team, no matter who they are, what they’ve achieved or what they haven’t

achieved. It doesn’t matter. “You treat every game the same,” Lehane said. Throw–in at Nowlan Park, Kilkenny is 2pm.

Cork woman Nollaigh O’Neill of Leevale Athletic Club (right) has won the first Sancti Petri International Half Marathon. O’Neill claimed first spot in the race, held near Cadíz in Spain on April 12th, with a time of 1.24.59 – more than seven minutes ahead of her nearest rival. A 10km race was also held as part of the Chiclana–based event, which is set to become an annual fixture.

metre cycle. A blistering 31.41 run then saw the 34–year–old athlete make it to 27th place in the final standings on April 11th. Keane is now expected to sit out the series’ next round in Cape Town, in preparation for his return to action in the Chengdu World Cup on Saturday, May 9th.

We must Go Deeper

Like the ‘Yes’ campaign in the forthcoming equality referendum, Fish Go Deep’s music has a broad, cross–generational appeal. Play’s Eoghan McNeill talks to a true legend of the Cork music and dance scene…

Obviously, we’re going to have a great time, too,” says Shane Johnson (above right), one half of house music act Fish Go Deep, demigods of the Cork club scene since their renowned Sir Henry’s club night, Sweat. He’s speaking ahead of the duo’s appearance at Love, Like, a fundraising event supporting Yes Equality Cork’s campaign for a ‘Yes’ vote in May’s equality referendum. Having a “great time” aside, the decision to get involved came easily to Shane: “From my own point of view, I believe strongly in a ‘Yes’ vote. It’s just about equality. Regardless of your sexuality, you should be able to get married.

“If we aspire to live in an equal society, we have to see this referendum passed. It would show that we’re a modern society, that doesn’t just pay lip service to the notion of equality,” he says. Shane established Sweat in 1988 with fellow fish Greg Dowling, and the event soon became one of the most respected club nights in Europe, attracting the likes of Laurent Garnier, Kerri Chandler and Roger Sanchez. Now, Shane speaks of standing in solidarity with the friends who helped make Cork’s first house music night such a success: “We used to get a really mixed crowd in Sir Henry’s in the early days. It was the first real dancing crowd in the city.

“After Loafers closed around 1am, their crowd would come over to us. I’d worked in Loafers, and so had Greg, so there’s always been that kind of connection – a kind of community.” With the recent surge in popularity of electronic dance music, or EDM as the US music industry buzzword goes, today’s club scene is markedly different to Sweat’s beginnings: “Back in the early days, everyone was so excited. It’s very hard to capture that again – where everything was so new to everyone. “People are so much more experienced now, and are going to places like Berlin and Barcelona for weekend trips, and going to superclu-

bs over there. “That just didn’t happen back in the Sir Henry’s days,” says Shane. While clubbers may be more experienced, less innocent perhaps, the Fish Go Deep boys have enjoyed watching their audiences evolve over the past quarter century: “Our crowd now ranges from people in their early 20s, right up to people in their 50s. Some people have been coming to us for 20 years. Some are new. “Striking that balance between the experienced and the fresh brings real energy to a night, and keeps things exciting,” says Shane. While maintaining the most important ingredient for a successful club night is a quality sound system, song choice is almost as crucial: “It’s funny: sometimes you try to second–guess the crowd. You might’ve heard a track during the week and thought, ‘this will blow people away.’ “Then you turn it on and just get a shrug. “A lot of the time, it’s the more unlikely tracks,” says Shane.

“It’s important to encourage people to vote, and to let them know how important their votes are.” He talks of Swedish house label Local Talk, home to Mateo & Matos, Dale Howard, and HNNY, as being a reliable source of new material. Spaniard Kiko Navarro’s recent Local Talk release Dope High has proved particularly popular with Fish Go Deep audiences, he says: “It’s a very simple record – it’s just a beat and a bassline, really.

“You hear it and just know it’s going to make sense at 1am on a dark dance floor.” With a host of Cork talent set to contribute to the “energy and excitement” of the Hanover’s dance floor this Saturday, April 18th, Shane hopes the night will above all raise awareness of the importance of each individual vote in May’s referendum. “I mean, fingers crossed the referendum will pass. All my friends and family are voting ‘Yes’, and I’ve had my daughter and her college friends out canvassing for a yes vote. “I might be in a bit of a bubble, though. “I think it’s important to encourage people to vote, and to let them know how important their votes are,” he says. The Love, Like benefit night takes place at The Hanover Club on Saturday, April 18th. Tickets for the 8pm event are €10, and are available at the door. Fish Go Deep are to be joined on the night by DJs Stevie G, Tonie Walsh, Colm K, Stevie G, Angi, Misterr Fork, Billy & Gina, Generic People, Colm Motherway, JusMe and Alex Bruce.

It was as if everyone met at a crossroads to share his or her talents just at the right time,” said Paul. Tickets are priced €29.50 to €35 from tickets.com.

Crean brought to life in Ballymaloe The award-winning play Tom Crean – Antarctic Explorer, comes to the Ballymaloe Grainstore on Thursday, May 7th, following sell–out shows across Ireland, the US, Australia, Europe and the UK. One of Ireland’s unsung heroes, Antarctic explorer Tom Crean is brought to life in this dramatic and humorous solo performance from Aidan Dooley. A solo 36–mile trek undertaken by Crean to rescue two fellow adventurers has been described as “the finest feat of individual heroism from the entire age of exploration.” Tickets for the 8pm show are €25 from ballymaloegrainstore.com. But to get the whole Ballymaloe experience, you really ought to have a meal to fortify you before you see Crean’s

thrilling exploits on the stage. The 6pm dinner in Ballymaloe House and ticket package is €70, but The Cork News has teamed up with Ballymaloe House and the Ballymaloe Grainstore to offer a lucky reader a chance to win themselves dinner and seats at this outstanding show! The play centres around the heroic exploits of Tom Crean, and so will our competition question: Crean is remembered as one of Ireland’s most famous sons, but which part of Ireland was he from? If you think you know, email comp@thecorknews.ie with the answer, your name, your address and your phone number. The competition will run for two weeks, so you’ll have plenty of time to rethink your answer if you find out you didn’t get it right!
