Hospital overcrowding hits record high 759 waiting on trolleys in Cork By Eoghan MacNeill news@thecorknews.ie
Seven hundred and fifty nine patients were on trolleys in Cork hospitals in February, with 410 of those at Cork University Hospital (CUH). The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) has released figures that show a record number – 9,657 – patients are on trolleys awaiting hospital beds nationally. This overcrowding represents the highest ever recorded figure for the month of February, and accounts for a 33 per-
cent increase when compared to 2013 figures. CUH is under significant pressure: the hospital is short of nurses, and patients are having to endure extended waiting times, according to the INMO. “It’s a very difficult environment for both staff and patients,” said Pasty Doyle, INMO, speaking to The Cork News. “We continue to support nurses working in the hospital, and we continue to call on more beds to be made available to patients,” she said. Ms Doyle maintains there is
space available in the hospital where new beds could be placed, reducing the number of patients waiting on trolleys. “In terms of staffing, there are not enough medics on the floor, and the hospital needs to be more imaginative in their recruitment drive. “Furthermore, the HSE needs to try to hold on to student nurses graduating from CUH, and survey graduating nurses as to their feelings on working at the hospital,” she added. continued on page 2

T
here’s a palpable wiggle of excitement around Cork in anticipation of Tuesday’s St Patrick’s Day extravaganza. After a rocky few days following an interrupted council meeting — which left the occasional “i” and “t” short their dots and crosses — all worries about quorums and signatures and paperwork were brushed aside and “full steam ahead” was declared. Tuesday is a day off for most of us, and I hope as many of you as possible will brave what will probably be inclement weather (no sense spoiling the tradition!) to get out and show your support for the amount of work which has gone into the whole thing. You can get a tiny taste of that work in Eoghan MacNeill’s Daytripper, which features the St Patrick’s Festival organiser, Miriam Dunne, on page 26. The parade starts on South Mall at 1pm, moves onto Grand Parade, then around to St. Patrick’s St. before finishing on Merchants Quay. You’ll see Dowtcha Puppets and Cork Community Art Link, Spraoi, Buí Bolg and LUXe. It’ll be only brilliant craic altogether, and we have some helpful maps in our pages this week too. We’re all especially looking forward to the parade here because Cork News columnist and one of the world’s most famous living Corkonians, George Hook, will be to be the Grand Marshal. George will lead the parade alongside Lord Mayor Mary Shields. In his regular column here this week you can read his thoughts as he prepares for his very last international rugby match as a pundit. TV rugby for me for nearly 20 years has been associated with George Hook and I’ve divided my time between yelling “no, for god’s sake George! What are you on about?!” at the screen and nodding sagely in agreement with his incisive, no–holds–barred analysis. On a personal note I’d just like to take this opportunity to thank him for more than a decade and a half of TV entertainment. I’d also like to assure you he’ll still be writing for The Cork News! Festivals and festivities aside, this week’s edition is an extravaganza of a completely different type: nestled snugly between our usual blend of news and information and our sections at the back (Cork Homes is particularly funky this week, you should check it out!) is a pull–out paean to weddings in Cork, taking in fashion and style, DIY moneysavers, modern innovations, old classics, venues, variations, delicious wedding–day treats, hen parties and…well, you’ll just have to read it yourself to get the whole story. Final touches being made ahead of the Cork St Patrick’s Day parade, which will get underway at South Mall at 1pm on Tuesday, making its way along Grand Parade and Patrick Street, before coming to a finish at Merchant’s Quay. Over 100,000 people are expected to attend.
Cork’s parade goes virtual “A Cork man with his own BBC chat show” will broadcast a special message to his home county on St Patrick’s Day, according to a source at Cork City Council. The city’s St Patrick’s Day parade will be streamed online and will feature contributions from famous Cork people at home and abroad. Responding to the rumour, Robert Crowley, Cork St Patrick’s Day Festival, said:
“There will be well– known names from sport, entertainment and television involved. “We can’t give too much away, though.” What is known is that our own George Hook is to be the parade’s Grand Marshall; see page 18 for more. Mr Crowley called on the people of Cork to join these famous faces and send in their own seven–second St Patrick’s
Day greeting to parade@city. ie. These greetings will then be played as part of the stream, which will provide a link between those at home and the Cork diaspora: “At a time of mass emigration in Ireland, we’re very happy to provide a small piece of home to Cork people across the globe. “People will be able to pick out different groups in the pa-
rade, and be able to say: ‘Look, there’s Nemo Rangers, my nephew plays for them,’” said Mr Crowley. The Cork St. Patrick’s Day parade stream can be viewed at corkstpatricksdayfestival. ie. Captured by city council cameras on Grand Parade, the stream will include footage of the parade as well as live commentary.
Permission to protest “ridiculous” Anti water charges protestor Diarmaid Ó Cadhla has suggested that further city hall protests may be forthcoming, as he “has no intention” of seeking permission to advertise public meetings in the future. “Cork City Council are often the subject of protest. To seek permission from the city council to protest against the city council would be ridicu-
lous. I would hate to think city hall would exclude us, and I cannot rule out any further protests,” he said. Mr Ó Cadhla caused consternation last week when he interrupted a council meeting, which disbanded before the attendees had a chance to sign documents pertaining to the St Patrick’s Day Parade, leading some to speculate he may have endangered the cel-
ebration. A Cork solicitor has questioned the right to advertise public meetings without prior permission: “You don’t have an absolute right to put up posters advertising meetings or protests. “If you tried to poster the front wall of someone’s house, you would need permission. “These poles and railings are not in public ownership, and
you need consent of the owner to use them to advertise public meetings,” said Seán O’Riordan, FitzGerald Solicitors, Cork. “That said, it could be argued that to assert the constitutional right to free assembly, you need to advertise protests and public meetings. “Whether that extends to public property is another matter,” he added.

Cork third–highest for repossessions Local councillor calls for ‘resistance’ Eoghan MacNeill Cork Circuit Court has served the third–highest number of repossession bills in the country, doling out 543 civil bills for repossession, behind only Dublin (1420) and Meath (564) in the national standings. Alliance Anti–Austerity Councillor Mick Barry (pictured) has called for legislation banning the repossession of family homes, following the release of the figures. “The vast majority of the families affected are ordinary families with lifestyles far removed from that of the O’Donnells
out of their homes and stops a social disaster from occurring in this country as the repossessions momentum gathers,” Cllr Barry continued. Cllr Barry criticised the government for not making moves towards such legislation: “That the Oireachtas has not passed legislation protecting homeowners in this situation is a clear indication that the Dáil and Seanad are dominated by parties who defend the interests of bankers and speculators over ordinary families,” he said. Mick Barry also called for “community–based resistance” to evictions: “It would be positive for the issue to be discussed at community level, and for the affected families to refuse to comply with the eviction order, supported by family, friends and community members in sufficient numbers so as to prevent an eviction,” he concluded.

Land values expected to rise in Cork in 2015 Land values are expected to increase in Cork in 2015, according to a report from property advisor Savills. While Dublin is expected to remain a focal point of development land transactions in Ireland, regional cities should see increased activity: “Asking prices on Daft.ie and anecdotal evidence from our agents on the ground suggests that there has been significant price growth in the main regional cities of Cork, Limerick and Galway. “As such, there are opportunities in these locations for developers,” said John Swarbrigg, Savills.

Pfizer retains Little Island facilty, saving 160 jobs Pfizer this week confirmed the retention of its Little Island facility, securing the future of 160 jobs. Having originally announced the planned closure of the plant in May 2013, increased demand for the company’s cholesterol–lowering medication Atorvastatin has seen Pfizer reverse the decision. The news was welcomed by Cork East TD Seán Sherlock, who said it will benefit the region as a whole: “This is a strong vote of confidence by Pfizer in what the Cork facilities are operating and producing on the ground. “The skill and work ethic of the workers and local management was crucial to this decision,” said Minister Sherlock. The news was further welcomed by the Cork Chamber of Commerce: “Today’s news provides

British Pfizer scientists, the active ingredients for Viagra are manufactured at the firm’s Ringaskiddy plant. Accounting for 15 percent of Pfizer’s total output, the ingredients are manufactured on a 200–acre plant that employs 500 people in the County Cork town.

Cork choir launches “Yes” vote single Cork–based choir Choral Con Fusion won the Entertainer of the Year award last weekend, and this week will launch a single aiming to raise money and awareness for the Yes Equality campaign ahead of May’s marriage equality referendum. The choir was named “Entertainers of the Year” at the Dublin Gala Awards following a public vote — beating fellow Corkonian Graham Norton, Hozier and Colin Farrell — and are now set to launch We All Love The Same as the song title becomes a trending topic in the run–up to the May referendum on equality: pop stars, politicians and more have posed for photographs and taken selfies to highlight the message. “The song is about the universality of love as an emotion. It doesn’t matter who you are – it’s the same.
“It’s not a political song; it’s just about love,” said composer and Choral Con Fusion founder Karl Fradgley, speaking to The Cork News. Mr Fradgley, an interior designer from Glanmire who owns two bridal shops in Cork and Dublin, wrote the song at his piano, and arranged it with two fellow choir members. The single will be available to download on Friday, March 20th and Mr Fradgley hopes it will become a standard for choirs across Ireland: “It’s a pop song. I quite consciously wrote a real sing– along chorus, so I’d love to hear other choirs singing it. “Of course, there’s a key change for a bit of a drama,” he said. Cork airport launches new brand identity Cork Airport has announced its new ‘Fly Friendly’ brand identity, which includes an overhaul of the airport’s logo. It is hoped the announcement — coupled with last week’s launch of new Ibiza and Cardiff routes — will contribute to securing the troubled airport’s future. “We felt it was time that we had a brand identity that reflected this unique experience and personality,” said Niall McCarthy, Cork Airport Managing Director. Hook uncorked As George Hook's TV career draws to a close, he reflects on his nearly 20 years as one of the country's most recognisable sports commentators ... george@thecorknews.ie

ext weekend will be my final Ireland international as an RTÉ rugby pundit. Time waits for no man and as much as I still enjoy my television work, the time has come for me to call it a day. I’ve had a good run, in fairness. I could not have imagined, when I made my debut as a late substitute with Michael Lyster for Ireland versus Romania in November 1997, that I would go on to have such a long and varied media career. Sometimes I wonder what might have become of me had I made a complete hash of my first appearance. Or if the powers in Montrose decided not to use me again after that first day. If I’m being completely honest, the what–ifs are scary prospects and I shudder to think about where I could have ended up. But that’s all irrelevant now. When the camera lights go out after Ireland’s visit to Murrayfield next weekend, I will bid fond farewell to a thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding chapter in my life. The game I love has been very good to me over the years and while my opinions have often been dismissed as sensationalist or irrelevant, I have always tried to call it as I see it and to make the sport of rugby union as accessible as possible for the people watching at home. I realised early in my punditry career that the majority of the television audience was unfamiliar and unconcerned with the jargon and finer details of the game. The great Bill O’Herlihy, during one of my first panel appearances for an Ireland international, taught me a very valuable lesson. On this occasion, as I was busy puffing out my chest and doing my utmost to appear all serious and important in my analysis, I described one

The modern game places a lot of emphasis on tactics and coaching patterns and there is a market for delving into the technical side of it all, but I believe there is also a place for someone that can break the game down to its simplest form and explain what is going on to the audience at home. Not everyone is au fait with the in–house jargon that dominates dressing rooms and coaching seminars. And not everyone cares whether a
team works in “pods” or plays “blitz” or “drift” defence. My role, as I saw it when I first started, was to explain why a particular team was winning or losing in the simplest and most effective way I knew how. The ins and outs of a collapsed scrum or the technical reasons why a maul fails to function are irrelevant to the average sports fan. I always liked to keep it simple: Why is a team winning? How can one side improve? Where are the big problems? Who is playing well? The typical questions that the viewer watching at home wants answered. And if my opinion divides an audience: so be it. If it offended anyone with an alternative view, that was never my concern. Ultimately, RTÉ
employed me to have an opinion and I can honestly say, hand on heart, that I never failed to deliver on that front. I owe a lot of my longevity in the pundit’s chair to my slavish devotion to preparation. At my father’s insistence — and from a very young age — I was always meticulous in my planning. I never left anything to chance and my mantra was to prepare for any eventuality. This approach has stood me in good stead. Even now, with just over a year left until my retirement from Newstalk, I never go into an interview unprepared. If something is left to chance, chances are that it will come up. From a personal perspective, it is disappointing that RTÉ will not be covering the
World Cup in England later this year. This year, perhaps more than ever, Ireland has an incredible opportunity to reach a semi–final of the tournament for their first time in its history. If Ireland manage to make the final four, Joe Schmidt will be given the freedom of the nation. It will be strange sitting down to watch it all from the comfort of my living room, but I suppose that is something I will have to get used to. At home, without my analyst hat on, I am an Ireland fan, the same as everyone else. At this stage in my life, I am really looking forward to spending more time with my family, especially my grandchildren. My late emergence into the media world has probably kept me go-
ing on long past my sell–by date, and even though my retirement from Newstalk is closing in, I can honestly say I will never give up work completely. It just isn’t in my DNA. I will be busy over the next week preparing for my final game as an RTÉ pundit. Old habits die hard and I will put as much work into the Scotland game as I did my first international back in 1997. Who knows? I might be uttering my final words as Paul O’Connell lifts the 6 Nations championship trophy. Either way, win or lose in Murrayfield, I will be bidding farewell to one of the happiest chapters in my life. And trust me when I say I appreciated and enjoyed every single second of it all.

Mallow will be first Cork town to provide free WiFi Mallow is to become the first town in Cork to provide free WiFi to all of its residents and visitors, from this summer onwards. The news was announced at a Kanturk/Mallow meeting of Cork County Council, where it was confirmed the trailblazing service would be based at Mallow plaza. “I believe that complimentary Wi-Fi has become an essential service for tourists and shoppers alike. “It is important for Mallow to be the first town in County Cork to offer this service,” said Independent Councillor John Paul O’Shea. Outlining his hopes that the service will stimulate tourism in the town, Cllr O’Shea continued: “Towns like Mallow need rejuvenating and I strongly believe offering services like complimentary WiFi will help encourage shoppers and tourists alike to come to Mallow and enjoy what it has to offer,” he said. Cork County Council will now oversee the surveying and testing of WiFi signals for the service, which will

Over 35,000 Cork homes sign up to government energy schemes Over 35,000 Cork homes have availed of the government’s “Better Energy Homes” and “Warmer Homes” schemes since 2009, according to government figures. That figure is second only to Dublin nationally, and far outstrips other counties out-
side the capital. Nearly as many Cork residents have applied as in Galway and Limerick — the two next counties — combined. Overall 23,813 local households availed of the ‘Better Energy Homes’ scheme, while 3,934 have benefitted from ‘Better
Energy Warmer Homes’. The Better Energy Warmer Homes Scheme relates to free home energy upgrades, while the popular Better Energy Home scheme involves grants for insulation and heating upgrades. “I believe that a warm home
is a basic human right that every citizen in Ireland deserves. These schemes prevent people from being plunged into energy poverty while also ensuring they stay warm in their homes,” said Cork South Central Labour TD Ciarán Lynch.

A Youghal athlete will be able to compete in the Dublin Mini Marathon after the event’s organisers were forced to review a policy relating to visually impaired entrants. Avid runner Sinéad Kane, Ireland’s first visually impaired solicitor, was informed that she would be unable to compete in the 10km run on Monday, June 1st as her guide is a man. However, organisers have now announced that while the event is still only open to females, they “appreciate that some visually impaired
or wheelchair entrants need assistance”. “We have changed our policy in this respect and will welcome both male and female assistants for these entrants,” said Dublin Mini Marathon in a statement on Thursday. “Male assistants will be given a special permit to allow access, while female assistants can either enter the event or receive a special permit.” Sinéad told The Cork News that “the power of movement can bring change” and said that if “common sense” had prevailed to begin with, the publicity surrounding the incident would never have

100, 000 will join George for parade The Cork News columnist George Hook will be to be the Grand Marshal for the Cork St. Patrick’s Day Parade 2015, and will lead it this Tuesday alongside Lord Mayor Mary Shields. The parade, which commences on South Mall at 1pm, will descend onto Grand Parade, making its way around to St. Patrick’s St. before finishing on Merchants Quay, will feature commissions from Dowtcha Puppets and Cork Community Art Link as well as street theatre companies Spraoi, Buí Bolg and LUXe. “George Hook, a national broadcaster, author, humanitarian and ambassador, is a passionate Cork native who embraces his culture and nationality. This makes him an ideal Grand Marshal for this year’s parade, which centres on culture as its theme,” said Councillor Shields. Speaking about his role as Grand Marshal, George Hook said “As a proud Corkman I am most honoured to be part of the City’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade. It is vital that we keep alive the important traditions and festivals of our nation and I am delighted to partake in

A National Youth Council of Ireland report has called for “significant reform” of the JobBridge internship scheme. The report found that 44 percent of JobBridge interns thought the scheme was used for free labour, with just 27 percent eventually securing full–time employment. Five hundred and twenty– two Cork residents are currently enrolled in the scheme, while 3,477 Cork people have taken part since the programme’s 2011 inception. Kevin Coughlan — Socialist Party member and CIT social care student — has worked with Scambridge, a coalition of activists highlighting abuses of the scheme.
Pupils at a North Cork school now have an iPad each to assist them with their learning, after an anonymous benefactor donated 120 of the iconic Apple tablets for their use. Principal of Bishop Murphy Memorial School in Fermoy James O’Donoghue stated the tools will allow an “invaluable” bank of resources to be built. Althrough the school made the announcement it was to receive the iPads last October, it was not until yesterday, Thursday, that the children held them in their hands. Mr O’Donoghue explained that a new intruder alarm had to be put in place, along with a new wireless network, a mobile device management system and an Apple ID for every child. “All these things took so long, so much time went into it,” he said.

Mr O’Donoghue revealed that the identity of the donor is known to him, but that he wishes to remain anonymous. “It wasn’t the case of him saying ‘do you want 120 iPads?’ It didn’t work like that. Instead he rang last September, and said ‘I am very fond of your school, how can I support the learning in the school?’. I went away, thought about it,
that iPads are the way of the future so I put a proposal to him and he backed it. The Board of Management was also delighted with the idea and so were the staff, so all of us together put it in place.” Mr O’Donoghue added that the traditional mode of learning is still “very important”, stating that schools need to value books and writing skills.

“The whole objective of the scheme is to subsidise businesses with free labour. “Obviously, getting work experience is good, but internships are only positive when they’re specialised. “The problem is not a lack of experience – it’s a lack of jobs,” said Mr Coughlan, speaking to The Cork News. With the release of the report, councillor Mick Barry
has said the scheme is “inherently exploitative,” and “should be scrapped, not reformed.” “Young people need jobs, and while getting work experience, they should be paid. “The scheme cannot be reformed,” the Anti–Austerity Alliance councillor told The Cork News. Minister Séan Sherlock wished to highlight the report’s methodology, which sampled 472 JobBridge interns from a current base of 6,100. “There is always scope to improve but research shows the longer you are out of work, the harder it is to get back to work,” said the Cork East Labour TD. The minister’s office highlighted that independent research has shown 60 percent of JobBridge participants have secured employment within five months. Of this 60 percent, 26 percent found employment with their host company. The remainder are employed elsewhere, in both a part–time and full–time basis.

Cork kids go for Google gold Nine primary students from Cork could win a €5,000 scholarship and have their Google logo design displayed on the search engine’s homepage. Partial Eclipse In The Park The first solar eclipse visible in Cork since 1999 will provide a stellar show next Friday morning, March 20th. The disc of the moon will begin to move slowly across the face of the sun as it climbs into the Cork sky, beginning at about 8:20 and continuing until roughly 10:40. Depending on where you are in Cork, those times will be plus or minus a few minutes. Unlike the 1999 eclipse, which was total, this eclipse will see Cork in the penumbra — an area outside the ‘region of totality’, which means the moon won’t completely cover the sun. However, at its peak around 9:25, a little over 90% of the sun will be blotted out. The CIT Observatory at Blackrock Castle will be host-
ing a free observation event to give members of the public a chance to safely view the eclipse using numerous solar stations in the lower carpark. Cork Astronomy Club and CIT astronomers will be on hand for the duration to guide you through this extraordinary astronomical event. Remember: if you’re planning on observing at home or even just to look up in wonder while you go about your day on Friday, never look directly at a solar eclipse: you could damage your eyes. Most especially, never, ever look at an eclipse directly through a telescope or binoculars: instead, project the image on a piece of card in front of the viewing lens.

My alarm goes off at half seven in the morning, and I’d usually allow myself one hit of the snooze button. If I’m working on an outdoor event, the first thought that runs through my head is ‘what’s the weather like?’ I can’t help but worry about it. Breakfast is porridge — nothing fancy — and then I make the short commute to my home office. I don’t just work at the kitchen table; I think that’s very important and make a point of being at the desk in the mornings at 9.30am, ready to start the day. I’d always have the radio or music on in the background, so you still have that connection. My taste in music is pretty eclectic. I’d listen to anything really — Damien Rice’s and Beck’s new albums are great. On my iPod, I’d have everything from Radiohead through to Jay Z. I suppose the only thing I wouldn’t really be into would be pop music. I wouldn’t be a fan of a lot of the more recent chart music, more the alternative music. I’m the artistic director of the Cork St. Patrick’s Festival — self employed for the last three years — and I make the commute up to Cork from Waterford at least once a week at the moment, along with being based here throughout the festival. I always think of events like these as being almost like a duck on the water. As far as the audience is concerned, all they see is the duck sailing serenely down the river, and they don’t realise that underneath the duck is paddling like mad. It has to work very hard to keep itself looking serene as it goes along but that’s what the audience should see. They shouldn’t know all the work that goes on! Skype and email is great, because when you’re contracted to do a job you don’t have to necessarily be on the ground to deliver.

I have one son and he went to college in Cork and fell in love with the place. He lived here from when he was 18 until he was 26. He’s in London now, working as a videographer, but will be home this weekend to work on the festival with me. Now when he says he’s ‘coming home’, he doesn’t mean to Waterford, he means to Cork! He’s meeting all his friends, and he’s gathered a crowd of about 30 people to take part in one of
the street pageants. He was always very artistic growing up, and people used to say that he obviously got that from me. I was never the least bit artistic, though. It was something I developed over time. I just fell into the arts by accident — completely and utterly by accident. It was in the 80s, and I had worked in the private sector, and then I was made unemployed, as lots of people were in the last major recession. I
had volunteered for a company called the Red Kettle Theatre Company. I did front of house and admin work on a volunteer basis and then I was made professional in 1988. Necessity breeds creativity, I suppose. There was really nothing around at the time, just a lot of unemployment. My friends and I would be sitting around thinking: ‘What can we do to make things happen?’ and while there was always the option of emigrat-

ing, I had a young child at the time so that wasn’t open to me. Now, I have great freedom with the different events I take on, and I love the variation that comes with working on different events and seeing new ways of working. With the Cork St. Patrick’s Festival, I’ll be based in a city centre hotel from today, Friday, until Wednesday. It’s handy for logistics to be able to walk to the site and walk back again.
Where I stay does vary depending on the event. Sometimes you might stay with friends, sometimes you might stay in a hotel, sometimes it might be someone’s floor, or a hostel. You name it, I’ve stayed there. I’ve even stayed in tents before! What I love about working in Cork is all the great restaurants. We’d usually go out for a meal in the evenings after we’ve finished work and explore the new restaurants that are opening up. We really like Gallagher’s on the corner of MacCurtain Street, and Market Lane is another nice one. I’m not fussy about food. I did a course on Indian cooking there a while ago, so I like making curries and Thai food and Vietnamese. Asian food in general, I just love. Twice a week in the evenings I try to attend yoga classes, which has become very central to my life. I took up yoga about five years ago. I call it my ‘therapy’. I should probably do more of it, but I try to meditate as much as I can. It’s a great way of dealing with stress. Working from home isn’t for everyone, and I sometimes find it hard to ‘switch off ’ in the evenings. The one thing that I wish I could change about myself is that I’m a worrier. I’m always worrying about the weather, which is the silliest thing to worry about, because there’s nothing you can do about it. I’m always anxious that something may go wrong, which is silly really, because we’ve planned the logistics for festivals so well to avoid anything like that happening! But it’s just my nature — I’m a worrier; which is a terrible trait, particularly if you work in the events industry. However, the day you become blasé about putting on a show, is probably the day you should leave events. It keeps you on your toes, always being anxious about putting on the best possible event for your audience.”

Harvey strikes again Tobacco with an approximate retail value of €8,200 has been seized in Cork. A Polish man in his 40s was questioned and a file is being prepared for the DPP as a result of an on–going operation by officers from Revenue’s Customs Service focusing on the illegal importation of cigarettes and tobacco. Cork, with its busy port and airport, is a hub for smuggling, but Revenue has a secret weapon Leeside: Harvey the Detection Dog (above).
While on a routine patrol, Harvey gave a positive reaction to a package containing 9kgs of tobacco which had originated in Poland. As a result of his hard work, officers carried out a follow up search, under warrant, at a private dwelling in Fermoy. The officers, once again assisted by Harvey, uncovered a further 8kgs of illegal tobacco which was unmarked and loosely packaged in clear ‘zip lock’ bags.

Cork radio station holds fundraiser in bid to survive A community radio station that has thus far survived on volunteer contributions is calling on the people of Cork to help save the station. Cork–based station Room101 is holding its first fundraiser at Fred Zeppelin’s

I marked the Magdalene Memorial Day last Saturday by attending a reading at St. Joseph’s Graveyard on Tory Top Road, Cork City. The attendees also placed flowers on the graves. One lady told me that her aunt had been incarcerated in a Magdalene Home in Cork aged 14, and the only taste of true freedom she ever got was when she died in her 80s. eddings don’t exactly have to break the bank, especially when it comes to decorations. You can make significant changes to the decor of your chosen venue with just a couple of key pieces. For the ceremony, adorn the seats or pews with organza and maybe even garlands if your budget stretches to it. Lanterns with tea lights at the end of each row can be an affordable alternative to bay trees. Use decorations that are easy to clear up afterwards... that means no glitter on the altar if you’re having a church wedding! Bunting and fairy lights can
transform your reception venue. Fairy lights can be bought quite cheaply and bunting is very easy to make. There are plenty of DIY tutorials online for paper flowers that can be made in advance. As well as being affordable another plus side is these won’t go off. If you’re a stickler for tradition but don’t have the funds to hire a professional, you can always take on the task of arranging your own flowers. Wires, tape and other floral arrangement paraphernalia can be found cheaply on eBay and flowers can be bought from markets or wholesalers. Even local discount supermarket changes have affordable flowers that would be suitable to be used as fillers.

Clothes Swaps This works really well with a few drinkies; a clothes swap night allows you to clear your wardrobe of pieces you don’t wear and bring home a few interesting bits. Give your guests plenty of notice so they can cull their closets. Most women own clothes they’ve never worn, or only worn a few times and know they’ll never wear it again but are loath to throw them out. Toss in bags and accessories while you’re at it.

Beautiful bumps Pregnancy brings about a lot of changes, but your fashion sense shouldn’t be one of them. Róisín Thornhill finds one Cork company dedicated to changing perceptions, not style.
I
n 2011, while expecting her third child, Catherine Daly had a dilemma on her hands. Due to attend a wedding she found herself in the unenviable position of not being able to find an outfit to suit her burgeoning belly that didn’t simultaneously compromise her sense of style. “I really couldn’t find anything nice to wear, the selection wasn’t great and anything I did find was really expensive. Just because you’re pregnant doesn’t mean you should have to lose your sense of fashion,” she explains. The frustration felt by Daly at the lack availability of affordable pregnancy occasion wear sowed the seeds of what was to eventually become Bumps’N’Babies, the
online pregnancy and children’s clothing business she runs out of her Carrignavar home. Daly is not a woman to rest on her laurels; just a couple of months after the birth of her daughter, Daly began to put her business wheels in motion. “I had my daughter in the May of 2011 and in August I began to think about doing something with my ideas, so I started to pull things together,” she says. One of the first jobs she set herself was charging her cousin with the task of creating the first incarnation of the Bumps N Babies website. Her next was casting her net wide and sourcing her suppliers. “It took a long time to get the suppliers in place but I actually found a lot of them
through Google, from places like Poland. Some were in the U.S.A. It costs a lot of money to ship from the states, especially when it would mainly be for one–off orders so I generally ended up using suppliers from Europe,” she highlights. To date, Daly has used all her own money to fund the business: she has no investors and, in her own words, “wouldn’t even apply for a loan”. Preferring to stay independent from investment however does sometimes have its disadvantages, as some suppliers don’t give credit on orders

placed, but so far Daly is happy to be able to keep the business running smoothly using her own funds. Statistics released late last year outlined that as many as 200 babies are being born every day in Irish hospitals. Daly’s decision to focus on stock that had been previously unavailable in the Irish pregnancy clothing market proved to be a canny one, as her business, since its inception has gone from strength to strength. So much so that in early 2014 she opened a showroom she runs on appointment from her home to showcase the products she has available. “Clients from Cork and around Munster were contacting me to see if they could try on the dresses so I set up the showroom. Last summer it was especially popular as I found that clients
who would maybe be coming to Cork for a visit and staying overnight in places like Fota would contact me and ask if they could stop by and try on some outfits.” Daly’s impressive work ethic is compounded by the fact that currently she runs all aspects of Bumps’N’Babies on her own, although she does admit to having a part–time assistant in the lead up to the fashion shows she participates in throughout the year. “It’s all me at the moment, however if the business continues to grow I will be in a position to hire my first employee in the next two years,” she says. Speaking of fashion shows, April sees the Baby and Pregnancy Fair roll into town, taking up residence in the City Hall for two days on the 18th and 19th of the month.
Its Dublin counterpart takes place in September in the RDS and Daly plans to participate in both, no matter how much work is involved. “It gets bigger every year!” she laughs, but to Daly the effort is worth it, as 80% of her online business comes from Dublin. However, she’s also quick to highlight that for her, the shows are not all about the selling: “It’s really about meeting people and finding out what their needs are; a lot of my business comes from word of mouth.” This grassroots feedback allows Daly to find out what works for her customers, recently she launched her own brand of nursing wear, which she developed after listening to what her customers told her they needed most. “I launched Bumps and Boobs in the middle of last year af-

ter speaking with expectant mothers who told me they were looking for nursing wear made of soft material that allowed discreet nursing,” she explains. Listening to her customers is key to Daly’s product diversification: what originally started out as a website devoted exclusively to maternity occasion wear (which is still her biggest seller) she has branched out, and now stocks children’s wear, changing bags, hampers, toys and personalised christening candles. She even organises baby shower shopping events from the customer’s own home. I asked Daly what she feels she has learned since her first tentative business steps in 2011, “Well it’s true what they say; the customer is always right!” she laughs. “You learn from your mistakes along the
way. However it’s been really beneficial for me to get to know the customers on a one–on–one basis. It’s a special time in their lives and we build up quite an intimate relationship when we work together to get them what they need during their pregnancy.” So does Daly have any final advice for the fashion conscious Cork mothers–to–be who are struggling to find clothes that work with their ever–changing bodies and don’t know where to begin? “Always stick to the size you were before you got pregnant. I
n springtime, wild garlic appears all across Ireland in shaded woodland areas. It is easy to recognize from its distinctive garlic smell. There are two varieties: one has a long three–cornered stem and the other which has a large broad leaf. The leaves can be harvested and treated like any salad leaf. In this roast lamb recipe I use the unique garlic taste in a pesto served alongside sweet slices of lamb leg. An easy side dish to serve alongside the roast lamb is simply braised baby gem, with peas in white wine and thyme sauce. If you wanted to make it more indulgent you could add a little cream to the cooking liquid at the end of the cooking time.
Method • Preheat the oven to 200˚C. Place the lamb in a large roasting dish. Mix the wild garlic, lemon zest, rosemary and rapeseed oil in a small bowl. • Massage the lamb leg with the paste all over and then season with sea salt and ground black pepper. Place in the oven to roast for 15 minutes per 500g (1lb) for medium rare or longer if you prefer your meat more well done. • Remove from the oven and rest under tin foil before serving in thin slices.
Ingredients Serves 6
Pesto • Place all the ingredients in a food processor or pestle and mortar and blitz until smooth. Season with sea salt and ground black pepper. Set aside.
Leg of lamb • 1 leg of lamb, on the bone (roughly 2 kg to serve 6–8) • A large handful of wild garlic leaves, finely chopped • Grated zest of one lemon • Three sprigs of rosemary, finely chopped • Three tablespoons of rapeseed oil • Sea salt and ground black pepper
Braised baby gem and peas • Melt the butter in a large high–sided frying pan. Fry the bacon until sizzling and crisp, add the wine and allow to sizzle for about 30 seconds before adding the thyme sprigs, lemon zest and chicken stock. • Add the peas to the liquid and then nuzzle in the spring onions and baby gem lettuce. “Fats have a huge part to play in the diet” Michelle Walsh, Head Nuritionist with Educogym, imparts some dietary wisdom which might surprise you:
T
he first thing I would recommend to anyone is getting in your water. That’s very important; you should be taking in on average two litres of water a day. Some people think that tea and coffee are in with that, but you need fresh water: it’s important for everything in your body, especially your brain, which needs a lot of water to work. The second thing I’d highlight is that a lot of people think cutting out carbohydrates is the way to go, but carbs have an important place in the diet. What you should do is eat them early in the day, because they’re slow release, so you can eat your porridge, say, first thing, and that’s releasing energy over the course of the morning, whereas if you have
carbs with your dinner late at night then your body is breaking them down and releasing sugars as you’re just sitting there: you’re not burning them and they’re storing up. This is the time of year is good for plenty of fresh vegetables and salads, and plenty of fruit is always a good idea too. Some fruits are better than others; the lowest–sugar fruits would be berries, which are high in antioxidants as well, so they’re great; oranges, grapefruit, kiwis, pears and green apples are all low sugar too. Bananas are a fruit on which you shouldn’t overdose; they’re digested quite slowly, so they’re good for someone who doesn’t want to lose weight but who wants to build muscles maybe, or who has a very active lifestyle. Pineapples are high in sugar, and so are grapes and melons. In fact, any tropical fruits tend to be high in sugar. Long ago people thought fats were the big problem and be-
came they afraid of them and started to avoid them, but actually they have a huge part to play in the diet. Fats carry a lot of flavour, and they’re great for heart health: good fats come from sources like avocado and coconut oil, and nuts and oily fish, while bad fats are highly processed fats like ’field oils’, for instance low– calorie sprays: they have a lot of chemicals. A lot of weight–loss programmes focus on calorie counting, but I and Educogym concentrate on the quality of the calories you’re getting. If you have two foods and they both have 200 calories, you could have a bar of chocolate, or a whole meal that would contain the same amount, and it’s fairly obvious that they have different effects on the body. You get much more nutrition from soup, for instance, than you would from the bar of chocolate. But in saying that about fats, it’s wise to spread
Sample some sashimi Contrary to popular belief, ‘sushi’ doesn’t refer to raw fish. In fact, the word sushi means ‘bitter’ and refers to the rice that often comes with the fish, which is cooked with vinegar. The fish itself, which is delicately flavoured and highly delicious, is called sashimi. Very often here in the Menu pages we try to give you an insight into food you can at least try to make yourself, but not so with sashimi. Sure, you can try to replicate what you might get in a sushi restaurant with some raw fish and some sharp knives, but as it traditionally takes five years

of training with a master before you’re even allowed to make the sushi rice, we don’t recommend “just giving it a go”. The real art of sashimi lies in knowing where and how to cut raw fish so that it’s at its most delicious and tender. The prepared fish can then be combined with sushi rice, nori seaweed and other ingredients to make up the wide variety of dishes in Japanese cuisine. Oily fish and nuts are good for heart health, but not large amounts. Protein is probably the most important part of the diet: it helps with the growth and repair of your muscles, it helps to keep the body firm and it’s important for your skin as well, because it’s needed for collagen, which is what gives your skin its elasticity. It’s also great for healthy hair, skin and nails. Good sources of protein include egg white, tuna, chicken, turkey, some cheese — cottage cheese is nice and low in fat — and white fish. Red meat is good but again goes quite slowly through the body, so anyone who wants to lose weight or increase their metabolism should be going for whiter meats.
Berry strange indeed Once associated with Autumn, globalisation has ensured that berries are now available all year round. But some of the facts about these fruits might raise your eyebrows! For starters, one of the most beloved of all berries — the strawberry — isn’t a berry at all, though chances are you already knew that. But what if I told you that raspberries, blueberries and blackberries aren’t berries either? And did you know that the banana, which most people wouldn’t put in the same bracket at all, is actually a berry? So are tomatoes, melons, kiwis, grapes, pumpkins, cucumbers, pep-
pers and pomegranates! The difference comes in how these fruits store their seeds: real berries have lots of internal seeds arranged in rows on the inside of the fruit. And to return to the case of the strawberry, here’s one you might not have known: not only is it not a berry, it’s not even a true fruit! The ‘seeds’ on the outside of the strawberry aren’t seeds: they’re the real fruit.

CUH gives siblings ‘new lease of life’ A phone call from a nurse at Cork University Hospital suggesting a new kind of therapy has given three young diabetic siblings a new lease of life. Ben (9), Emily Mai (7) and Harry Ryan (4) all suffer from type–one diabetes. Their mother Jane had to attend their school daily to administer injections, and they could not go to birthday parties without someone watching what they ate. “Diabetes was controlling their lives,” says Jane Ryan. Nurse specialist Norma O’Toole kicked off the pro-

week, physiotherapy-led exercise and education programme, and is open to those with MS living in Cork, who are able to walk independently but who are physically inactive.
“It is important that we enable people with MS to remain active in the long term and we hope that through exercise and education we will facilitate this,” said Dr Susan Coote.

Built with city drivers in mind, the Suzuki Celerio packs lots of value into a small, very low–priced car, writes Seán Creedon.
A
t the Irish launch of their new Celerio in November last year Suzuki staff invited the motor journalists present to undertake some nifty manoeuvres in the underground car park of a city centre hotel. It made for an interesting test and showed just how nimble and easy to manoeuvre this car is. Make no mistake; Suzuki are marketing the Celerio as
a city car: ‘The Celerio beckons for a drive in the city,’ is one of the lines from their PR blurb. It’s a very neat car and apparently it’s a big seller in India, where the selling price is obviously an attraction. In Ireland you can get the entry–level version of this four–door car for €11,995, which makes it one of the lowest–priced new cars in Ireland right now. I drove a blue version and it was really attractive. A
young lady described it thus: ‘‘it’s small, looks cute, it’s easy to manage and to park. My type of car.’’ I certainly won’t disagree with that. Two small cribs; there was a little bit of road noise and my regular front seat passenger remarked that there is no vanity mirror. Surely such an important item as a vanity mirror wouldn’t have increased the price that much. However, there are several plusses. For starters it has a very frugal engine and I can
safely say that you won’t have to make many pit stops for petrol. You get four doors which open at a 90% angle, all with electric windows. While the boot is naturally small, there is space for a regular spare wheel. And it has a great turning circle. I really liked the radio controls: two buttons, one for on/off, the other to choose your station of choice. I really like the latter; you can pre– select so many stations, but at times I like to just scroll through the wavelengths to find something different to get away from the ads, some of which I know off by heart by now. There is plenty of leg and head room for five adults, but of course it would be more

comfortable for all concerned with just two adults in the rear. There are two trim levels, GL and GLX. The GLX has extra equipment like chrome front grille, electric mirrors and extra speakers. Both trims come with Bluetooth and USB connectivity. This is Suzuki’s 30th year in Ireland and they are hoping that owners of Suzuki Alto and Suzuki Splash will switch to a Celerio, and naturally they would be thrilled with some conquest customers from other brands. If you want to get behind the wheel of a new car for less than twelve thousand euro, take a test drive in the Celerio. Prices start at €11,995, while I drove the GLX ver-
sion which will cost you an extra one thousand euro. Last month Suzuki had to temporarily suspend sales of the Celerio after a journalist from What Car? Magazine in England encountered problems with the braking system. Declan Maguire, Marketing Manager for Suzuki Ireland, said: ‘‘We recalled all models of the Celerio sold in Ireland since December 1st last year, due to problems with the retraction of the brake pedal. The problem has now been rectified and the Celerio is on sale again.’’ There are three Suzuki dealers in Cork: City View Wheels on Blarney Street; Breen Suzuki, Donnybrook; and Kiely’s of Mallow.

T
he good thing about the advent of Personal Contract Plans is that new car sales have increased, and so late–model used cars, practically untouched by human hands, are readily available to people with an eye for a deal. Thus I am spoiled again this week, with a 2014 Ford Mondeo Titanium Plus from Abernethy Ford in Midleton; a 2.0 dci six speed manual hatchback in metallic grey with a very nice leather interior. The design is more impressive from the side than the front, though I like the sleek headlamp arrangement, and there’s lots of room in the boot to go pick up a giant

The only spanner in the works is the rain: it’s lashing, sheets of blinding water that would make a drive in a smaller car a bit daunting. I feel totally safe in the Mondeo though; it’s a smooth, powerful ride that has no issue in the wet and wafts along on excellent suspension, not even registering bumps. The loudest thing in the car is me, singing along to the radio.
Once I quit caterwauling all I can hear is the gentle thwack thwack of the wipers as I slalom confidently through all the wriggly corners between Innishannon and Bandon. It’s a delightfully refined drive; an ideal vehicle for families or anyone who has a lot of motorway mileage to cover. The Titanium has many bells and whistles, including excellent connectivity and Sat Nav, and my legendary lack of parking skills are compensated for by the parking sensors as I ease between a horsebox
and a nun in a Micra on the main street. There’s a four year warranty from Abernethy Ford on this immensely civilised car; and at €27,950 it’s a big saving over the list price of a new one. With just over 20,000 miles on the clock, it’s an excellent buy for anyone who wants comfort, safety, fuel economy and performance all rolled into one nice–looking vehicle that copes beautifully in Irish weather. A Chinese budget car manufacturer which has made its name producing tough, cheap 4x4s is bringing a fully revamped version of one of its most popular workhorses to the Irish market. Great Wall has announced a full equipment upgrade for the new Steed S, which they describe as “Ireland’s best value 4x4 double-cab pick up”. In an effort to make greater inroads into the Irish market, the Chinese marque — which produces more than 1.5 million cars a year for its domestic market — has pulled out all the stops with regard to warranties, with a six–year,
200,000km guarantee, six– year anti–perforation warranty, three–year paint warranty and three years of roadside assistance. The Steed S’s specifications and trim (full bluetooth connectivity and leather upholstery are standard) are also well beyond what you might expect to find in a 4x4 which will only set you back €23,666, and its 2.0l turbocharged 16–valve diesel engine delivers 34MPG. You may not have heard of Great Wall before, but here at Drive our prediction is that you’ll be hearing a lot more about them before too long.

Cork City to play first home game of the season Having secured a point away to Sligo Rovers with a late strike last weekend, Cork City FC play their first home game of the season on Friday, 13th March.

Munster prop Botha signs new contract Munster Rugby this week confirmed that prop BJ Botha has signed a six–month contract extension, keeping him at the province until December 2015. Having made 93 appearances for the club, it means the South African powerhouse will be available to head coach Anthony Foley during the World Cup, which will make all the difference for the province when some of their biggest hitters leave aside their red jerseys to don the green. “He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the scrum and front row. It’s a huge boost to have him available during the World Cup when our squad numbers will be reduced,” said Foley.

It’s good to be the Goss
“
Ultimately my job is still the same. You go on stage, sing your best songs, and have a bit of craic with the audience,” says Kieran Goss, ahead of his show in the Triskel Arts Centre. The job — touring and recording — has been the same for the 30 years following his decision to leave his job as a solicitor and “go out and hit the circuit.” Deciding he didn’t want to spend a life “sitting in an office dealing with other people’s troubles,” Kieran sat his parents down and told them he was taking a break from the law: “I told them it was only going to be for a year or two, but sure we all knew the truth. “My mum was delighted, she absolutely loved it. My father kind of smirked at me like: ‘Aye, right; you’ll be back.’” “He has a real work ethic. He said I had to work hard at it, and treat it like any other job — ‘the world doesn’t owe you a living’ kind of thing. Their reactions kind of sum up my character: the dreamer and the romantic in me comes from mum; the hard worker from dad,” he says. Never a “rock and roll animal,” Kieran spent years busking in New York, Germany and France, writing songs and working towards recording his first album in 1989. “For me, in the early days, I was roughing it,” he tells me. “I didn’t mind busking and playing small gigs in Irish pubs. When you’re in your 20s, you’re happy to do things you wouldn’t in your 40s and 50s,” he says. Having built his audience the “old–fashioned way” — playing in any venue that would have him — tours are

now more comfortable affairs. 2013 saw a first Irish tour following a ten–year hiatus, and now Kieran and his wife Annie Kinsella are five dates into a mini Irish tour, with Cork next on the schedule. Annie — “a brilliant singer in her own right,” says her husband — opens the show, giving way to Kieran’s solo first act, before joining him on stage to sing the harmony line in the second act.
“We’ve been singing together for years, so it just kind of comes naturally. We’ve been able to turn music into a lifestyle and an adventure. It’s not like I go off on the road and don’t see her for months. It’s just great,” he says. Having released Solo in 2014, and with a new studio album planned for 2016, lyrical subject matter has changed since his early days “roughing it” it at home and abroad:
“You don’t have to see the end of the path to start walking.”
“As you get older, your conversation and dialogue changes. That’s only natural. I’m 52, and I’ve been writing since I was 15 or 16. “Take Reasons to Leave – it’s a song about emigration. I don’t think I could’ve written that when I was 16. You need a certain level of delicacy, of sensitivity. You kind of had to have lived it,” he muses. While life experience — touring, getting married, the “gradual” success — may
have influenced lyrics in recent work, Goss’s musical sensibilities have remained constant: “If you love music, it doesn’t change,” the singer declares. “I’m just a fan of great songwriting. I’m no snob. I love Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Rodney Crowell and Guy Clark – all those guys. I still love a perfect, three–minute pop song, too. It could be Britney Spears or anyone. It doesn’t have to ‘move me,’” he says. Country duo Lennon and Maisy’s Grand Ole Opry cover of the Lumineers hit Ho Hey has particularly impressed: “As a musician and as writer, it’s great to hear brilliant songs like that interpreted in such a way,” he says. The decline of the CD — and with it the high street music store — makes for a music industry that bears little resemblance to that which Kieran first entered. Saying he hopes he would still leave his legal career behind for music today, Kieran returns to the value of the song: “If it’s different for young artists, the only thing that’s changed is the route. You just have to believe. Write a great song and don’t worry about the rest. I mean, you don’t have to see the end of the path to start walking on it,” he says. Kieran’s path has taken him from hustling across Europe and the US to making an “adventure” of touring with wife Annie, and he’s still loving it. “It’s just brilliant craic: the sense of humour from the audiences; people knowing the songs,” he beams. “I’ve got a great core audience in Cork, and I can’t wait to get down to play for them.” Kieran Goss and Annie Kinsella play the Triskel Arts Centre on Saturday, March 21st.
