The first ever text message was sent 25 years ago last Sunday.

According to CNET news, it was sent on December 3, 1992, by a British engineer to an executive at a British telecom company, who was attending his company's holiday party in Newbury, England. Cell phones couldn't type at this time; the message was written on a computer, and sent to the executive’s stylish Orbitel 901. The message read: Merry Christmas. How quaint.

According to Statistic Brain, 781 billion texts are sent in the U.S. alone, each month, as of July 2017. Research from Pew Research Institute shows that the majority of teens prefer texting over calling. We’re a society that loves to be social, but only in a controlled fashion. Texting satisfies that low commitment, constant communication need. Thus, the crazy and strange word of texting languages.

English enthusiasts, grammar-nazis, and linguistic conservatives might reject emojis as a viable communicative format. They’d cite its vulgarity, its promulgation by tweens, its association with texting grammar.

This more or less falls under the prescriptive versus descriptive grammar argument. Prescriptions for grammar specify rules about what is a correct or incorrect use of language.

Descriptions look to see what actually exists within the language, placing the authority on the user of the language themselves.

What are emojis? They’re pictograms (little symbols that convey meaning through its resemblance to an actual thing) and ideograms (symbol that represents an idea or concept.) They’re also used more and more frequently.

You might think we’re heading back to the Stone Age, resorting to hieroglyphics and drawings for communications, but you’d be ignorant. It’s a Eurocentric belief to think language must be written with an alphabet, and pronounced based on the lettering. In fact, a lot of Chinese characters are pictographic and ideographic.

Perhaps there’s a future for emojis. In the Chinese languages/dialects, many characters are logograms — they represent a word or phrase.

Historically, this helped speakers of mutually unintelligible dialects communicate through writing because of the universality of phrase representation. This differs from the Latin alphabet, where words are (more or less) phonographic (ie. sounded out). Think English’s “gift” and German’s “gift,” which means poison. Or English’s “slut”, which means “end” in Swedish.

The Cascade is UFV’s autonomous student newspaper. It originated under its current name in 1993, and achieved autonomy from the university and the Student Union Society in 2002. This means that The Cascade is a forum for UFV students to have their journalism published in an entirely student-run setting. It also acts as an alternative press for the Fraser Valley.

The Cascade is funded with UFV student funds, and is overseen by the Cascade Journalism Society Board, a body run by a student majority. The Cascade is published every Wednesday with a print circulation of 1,250 and is distributed at Abbotsford, Chilliwack (CEP), Clearbrook, and Mission UFV campuses and throughout the surrounding communities.

The Cascade is open to written, photo, and design work from all students; these can come in the form of a pitch to an editor, or an assignment from an editor. Writers meetings are held every second Monday at 12:00 p.m. in The Cascade’s office on the Abbotsford campus.

In order to be published in the newspaper, all work must first be approved

by The Cascade’s editor-in-chief, copy editor, and corresponding section editor. The Cascade reserves the right to edit submissions for clarity and length. The Cascade will not print any articles that contain racist, sexist, homophobic or libellous content. Letters to the editor, while held to the same standard, are unedited, and should be under 400 words. Beaming emojis into your mind EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

It’s the same word morphologically (visual form), but means something very different — these are called interlingual homographs.

Maybe the 14-year-olds are onto something. Languages evolve, it’s why there can’t really be a universal human language. There’s too many of us and we group together. Look at the various accents and dialects within England alone. What about a universal written language?

Except emojis can’t be a writing system, and they won’t be. A writing systems is visually codified language.

Emojis encode emotions, abstract ideas, and feelings, and they do so quite poorly. There isn’t yet much of an established set of conventions for how and when to use them.

For the most part, salad means salad; dog means dog. But the peach emoji almost never means peach.

What does the flame mean; what do the two beers mean?

Perhaps emojis will modify our language even more dramatically than simply by becoming integrated with text. What if they altered not the written form we use to communicate, but how we communicate altogether?

In the study of linguistics, there’s an ongoing conversation about how language shapes thought, and vice versa. Linguistic relativity, popularly known as the Sapir–Whorf hypothesis, suggests that a speaker's language influences their understanding of the world. This has been proven to be true, though we don’t know exactly to what degree.

The Guugu Yimithirr people of Australia have cardinal directions (north, south, east, west) deeply embedded into their language. So much so that they’ll even refer to the pencil on the desk as north-east of the book, as opposed to the left of the book; or the ring on your finger on your south

hand.

Lera Boroditsky, associate professor of cognitive science at the University of California, San Diego has written on languages like this. What she found was that speakers of languages emphasizing cardinal directions have a directional sense that seems biologically impossible for humans, “by virtue of the practice that language requires of them.”

Something similar is true for Arabic and Hebrew speakers, who read right to left. They often think abstractly in terms of starting at the right and progressing to the left. We tend to subconsciously start on the left and move to the right.

Professor of cognitive science at the University of California, San Diego, Rafael E. Núñez, found that the Aymara people of the Andes and Altiplano regions of South America refer to the future being behind them, and the past in front. We’d say the opposite.

These subtleties influence our body language, our values, and even what we can accomplish. Boroditsky notes that peoples with languages that don’t specify exact numbers aren’t capable of advanced mathematics like algebra, and thus never create archetectures like those found in China, the middle east, or the Developed West.

If emojis are an expression of abstract (if not completely confusing) emotion, maybe we’ll become a people who communicate through codified emotions and feelings. We’d steer away from the literal, but towards perceptions and feelings.

Then maybe we’ll integrate cellphone tech into our minds, eliminating the need for bulky screens. Maybe we’ll beam emoji data through sound waves to each others’ brains. Maybe we’ll evolve into dolphins.

Double robbery hits UFV art exhibits Two pieces taken without consent, separate occasions

UFV recognizes National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women The University of the Fraser Valley and Ann Davis Transition Society will be holding a ceremony in commemoration of the 14 young women who were murdered at l’École Polytechnique de Montréal in 1989, as well as all women who have and who still are victims of gender-based violence in our society.

The ceremony will take place at Five Corners in Downtown Chilliwack on Dec. 6 at at 5:15 p.m. Hot chocolate and cookies will be served, and there will be counsellors available to speak with afterwards. Everyone is welcome to attend.

New BC Transit bus facility development to move forward BC transit has submitted an application to the City of Abbotsford to rezone a recently purchased property just south of the Highway 11 junction on Gladys Road for the purpose of relocating and developing a new bus facility there.

The new facility will cost approximately $28 million dollars, with the federal government providing $11.5 million, the province $14.1 million, and the rest to be paid by local governments.

Improvements to the transit system in the area are long overdue, and the new facility will include a compressed natural gas fueling station, bus wash, seven maintenance bays and offices, and an increased capacity which will allow the Central Fraser Valley transit system fleet to almost double in size.

An art piece was stolen from an Abbotsford C building art gallery while the exhibit was left temporarily unattended on Nov. 20. The artwork was on loan from a UFV alumni, and part of an exhibit by a current UFV student curator.

A second art piece was reported stolen from another UFV gallery sometime during the week of Nov. 27. The piece was the work of a current UFV student, and small enough to be easily slipped into a pocket or backpack.

No connection between the two robberies has been reported, but UFV security manager Mike Twolan said over email that the investigation is ongoing.

This is reportedly the first art robbery UFV has experienced. It has raised questions about the security of other art pieces displayed at UFV, many of which have monetary and sentimental value to the artists.

“This is deeply upsetting. The artists have

lost irreplaceable pieces which required hours of work,” said Alisa Webb, UFV associate dean of students, over email.

Webb described the first stolen art work as a textile-based piece that was hand dyed, painted, and airbrushed.

The second piece is one of four identical elements of a sculpture.

“This is deeply upsetting” Campus planning and security will discuss security procedures on campus, particularly around the UFV art galleries.

“We have increased security patrols, so this should be visible to most,” said Twolan. “There are a number of other measures put in place, but we are not at liberty to expand on that specific part of the investigations.”

Webb was unable to speculate on what

would motivate someone to take the artwork.

“Exhibiting work is an important part of creating art — something which benefits not only the artist, but also the viewers who get to engage with the creations of others,” said Webb. “It is of vital importance to recognize that art pieces displayed on campus are personal property, reflecting significant investment on the part of the artist. We welcome viewers to view them, but remind all that taking them is theft.”

Anyone with information on the thefts is encouraged to come forward to security, either anonymously or in person.

“There may be people out in the UFV community that have information which would be helpful in this investigation,” said Twolan. If someone comes into contact with the missing art, please notify security immediately. Those works of art have meaning for the creators of said pieces. They need to be found and returned.”

Online security updated, ransom not paid

A month after UFV student personal account information was held ransom for $30,000, no additional information has been released.

On October 31, The Cascade reported that private information from 29 UFV

accounts was emailed to hundreds of UFV student emails. The malicious email demanded a ransom in exchange for not releasing thousands of more accounts’ information.

UFV director of communications, Dave Pinton, said in an email that the ransom was not paid, and security update measures took approximately eight days to

establish. UFV did not enter into negotiations with the party responsible for the email.

“The original malicious email did contain personal information, as we reported, but no further evidence surfaced which CONTINUED ON PAGE 4

UFV is now aware of how the information was accessed, but to assist with the investigation, and to maintain the security of the the information, would not disclose details, Pinton said.

Pinton said UFV would also not disclose whether the the malicious email’s sender had been identified or not, but said the investigation is ongoing.

To prevent this kind of data breach from happening in the future, UFV’s chief information officer, Darin Lee, said in an email that UFV has implemented more stringent password requirements for the myUFV portal.

“A number of projects are in motion to improve our security, and we continue to collaborate with our peers in the post-secondary sector to identify and implement best practices,” said Lee. Initially responding to the attack, the university notified all students, faculty, and staff of the investigation of the malicious email and the disclosed personal information. The email asked the community to be cautious when receiving unusual email messages.

Later that day, UFV temporarily suspended some functionality of the myUFV web portal and UFV student emails to minimize the risk of further data breaches during the investigation.

Immediately following the attack, UFV contacted a third-party cybersecurity and forensics firm, the Abbotsford police department, external privacy-expert legal counsel, and activated UFV’s Emergency Operations Centre, a team of university personnel who evaluate a crisis, make decisions based on policy, and deploy resources as necessary, Lee said. The Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of B.C. was also contacted, and kept updated with the investionation.

“Incident response, as well as privacy breach protocols, existed and were followed,” Lee said. “However, every situation is unique, and this was the first of this nature for UFV. Protocols are being updated to reflect the lessons learned to better prepare for future events.”

Professor profile: Allan Arndt study biology, which actually took me quite a ways around the world — my first postdoc was in Belgium, and my second one in Utah. When I saw an ad for professorship in Brandon, Manitoba, I ended up moving there. But, during my time there, I realized that I was about 100 kilometres from the geographic centre of Canada, which is about as far away as you can get from an ocean. When this job at UFV came up, I was lucky enough to get it. So, really, it was my love for teaching, and proximity to the ocean, that brought me here.

What were your two post-docs in?

Allan Arndt has been a biology professor at UFV for about 15 years and has taught nearly every biology course in the discipline including conservation, molecular, and cellular biology, in addition to leading multiple directed studies. Alan has been the biology department head for nearly six years, and is now finishing up his final term in the position. Alan loves teaching courses in a way which allows students to connect each idea to another, which in turn promotes active thinking. He is very passionate about giving his students valuable knowledge in an engaging way.

What brought you to UFV? Well, I did my PhD because I wanted to

In Belgium, I was studying African catfish for a population genetics project. Then, I was in Utah for another population genetics project looking at Podocnemis expansa, an endangered river turtle in the Amazon.

The Podocnemis expansa species is quite interesting, as the female carapace can be almost a metre across, and they can weigh up to 70 kilograms.

Due to anti-predation behaviour, the turtles only nest on a new moon, since that’s when it is the darkest. All the females come out at the same time, and it takes them all night to lay their eggs, since their clutch is usually about 70 eggs (per female). Nobody really understands where the juveniles go.

Once they hatch out they’ll go back into the river, but then you hit the wet season, and a lot of the forest actually floods, so there’s tremendous connections that they can disperse through.

How would you personally define good teaching?

For me, good teaching requires respect and engagement with students. One of my fellow colleagues here who retired last year, Ron Willen, always said, “Test what you taught,” and that really resonated with me. I think it’s important to also use a variety of different teaching styles, including an active form of teaching, whenever there is a possibility to do so.

What led you to becoming the biology department head?

I wanted to challenge myself in various aspects, such as running meetings, keeping faculty and students happy, as well as learning how to deal with student’s problems and inquiries effectively, but it isn’t always easy. The timetabling aspect of the role is just like a little crossword puzzle, so I actually enjoy that. It was all very daunting at first, but I’m glad I challenged myself, and I’ve enjoyed serving the department so far.

What kind of changes have you noticed in the UFV culture throughout your time here?

In my opinion, the research presence at UFV has strengthened over the years, and I would say the students have gotten stronger as well. Since transitioning from a college, and having gained the university status quite a number of years ago, I believe the reputation of the institution is much stronger, too.

What are your current research interests or projects?

We’re currently looking into the molecular population genetics of sea cucumbers along the B.C. Coast, and I’m also involved with projects that assess biodiversity in the Lower Mainland. We’re also looking into bacterial community assessments of hot springs using next generation sequencing.

Have there been any students or faculty who have been particularly influential to you at UFV? Barbara Moon was the biology department head here for a while, she retired a couple of years ago, but she was in fact the one who introduced me to effective group work. I really appreciate a lot of my colleagues, and I feel lucky every day to be in this department, surrounded by such great individuals. I’ve also had a number of fabulous students that have gone on to do great things.

How would you describe what you’ve gotten out of your time at our university?

I’ve had a fantastic career at UFV. I love teaching, and I love being able to get to know the students in my classes. I’ve found that the past 15 years here have been very rewarding.

SUB extended hours

The Student Union Building (SUB) is open for extended hours during the exam period. From Dec. 5 – 14, the SUB’s hours will be extended from 11:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. Evered Hall is also open as dedicated study space, with chairs and tables set up in the hall. It will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m.

Additionally, Fair Grounds Coffee Shop in the SUB is now open 7:30 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. Monday to Friday, and 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.

SUS president, Gurvir Gill, said that SUS will discuss with the university the possibility for the SUB to be open 24-hours during the winter semester’s exam period.

At the Nov. 23 SUS board meeting, Andrew Stahl, arts representative, asked if other campuses with similar extended building hours see an increase in crime, and if anything will be done at the SUB to mitigate risk.

Gurvir said that UFV will provide security during the extended hours.

Stahl also suggested that the parking lot in front of the SUB be designated as a women’s parking lot, similar to lots six and seven, north and east of A building, respectively, where security has a higher presence after 4:30 p.m.

Alcohol consumption in B.C., highest in Canada B.C. is seeing the highest rates of hospitalizations due to alcohol consumption in the country. According to the AOD Monitoring Project, alcohol consumption in B.C. has been rising the fastest in all of Canada, with individuals consuming a yearly average of 9.4 litres of pure alcohol, or 14 beers per week.

“Last year, at least 36 per cent of emergency room visits to St. Paul's and Vancouver General Hospital for substance abuse were alcohol-related,” reported CBC News.

Former NDP candidate says NDP failed on Indigenous issues Early this November, the Supreme Court of Canada approved the continued construction of the Jumbo Glacier ski resort project on lands held sacred by the Ktunaxa people.

Troy Sebastian, a Ktunaxa Nation member and former British Columbia NDP candidate, believes it is a failure on the part of B.C.’s NDP government for not condemning the project, and this move is symbolic of the government’s failure to properly handle Indigenous rights.

This number does not include alcohol-related injuries such as broken bones, accidents caused by impaired driving, or violence caused by alcohol abuse.

“I don’t believe the B.C. NDP have any bearing whatsoever on how to move forward when it comes to Indigenous peoples, what the province should be doing or not doing,” Sebastian said.

Trump plans to move embassy to Jerusalem President Donald Trump has informed several Arab leaders over phone last Tuesday of his plans of moving the U.S. embassy in Israel, currently in Tel Aviv, to Jerusalem. Palestinians view Jerusalem as the capital of their future state, resulting in the city’s status being a sensitive issue in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The intention has been met with great concern amongst Arab leaders, with Egypt's President Abdel Fatah el-Sisi hoping the U.S. will avoid actions that could undermine current peace efforts in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Majdi Khaldi, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ diplomatic advisor, responded that such action would be unacceptable, and any contact with the U.S. would be cut off.

I’m not arguing for the addition of a slew of courses to the department, but perhaps include some required practicum courses which include practical education in creative writing, as well as a literature component that’s more focused on applying that education towards publishing goals.

Not only will this help outgoing students when they attempt to become writers, editors, or break into the publishing industry, but it will give UFV something unique among post-secondary English degree programs: a creative writing concentration that prepares students to be published writers. UFV constantly tries to find new, flashy hooks with which to lure students to our campus. A great start might be to take one of its most popular faculties, and equip it with the tools to provide students practical education.

The number of plays, novels, and poetry published by alumni will draw in more than twice the students that would otherwise be tempted by the English department’s current relative obscurity.

A course schedule that works for you Tips to make registration (and the upcoming semester) a bit less stressful ALEISTER GWYNNE STAFF WRITER

I realize by this point that most of you reading this will have already chosen courses for the winter semester, but even so, I think it may be a good time to share some of the lessons I’ve learned in my two years at UFV, and to offer some helpful tips on how to construct a course schedule that will work with your circumstances and personal learning style.

First of all, if you haven’t already registered for classes, and intend to take some this winter, you should do so immediately. Seats fill up faster than you think, and if you put things off for too long, that course you really needed or wanted could be full. I made this mistake the first couple of times, but I’ve at least broken that bad habit, if not others. Missing out on a course can mean more than mere disappointment. Most courses, except for a few mainstays, like English 105, are not offered every semester. Missing a core, required course in your program could force you to wait a whole year before it becomes

available again, and this will also set you back for any courses that it’s a prerequisite for.

While we’re on the subject of missed courses, do not assume that once you have registered everything is done and dusted until classes begin. This semester I registered for a course that ended up being cancelled due to lack of interest, and because I didn’t check my notifications, I ended up having to find a replacement at the last minute. Check your student information and email regularly, in case something unexpected comes up.

With regard to the number of courses you should take per semester, I find that the ideal number is three or four. Four is best if you have no other commitments.

However, if you are working a job, or you are participating in clubs or associations, then three is best since your other commitments will add the equivalent of another course load. I originally used a four-course schedule, but since I started work at The Cascade, I’ve moved to three courses per semester. You might be able to get away with five or six if you are a high-energy

type with a strong work ethic, or you are in a hurry to get your degree or certificate, but even then, I would strongly recommend against this. Taking fewer courses per semester might make things take longer, and add to your costs through living expenses, but I feel that a slower pace and lighter workload is better for your physical and mental health, not to mention your GPA. As for the courses that you choose, that depends on your program requirements, and your own personal interests. I recommend at least one program-related course, and at least one elective each semester.

The rest is up to you, but I find it best to balance fulfilling your academic requirements with something you enjoy. Electives can be purely for enjoyment, but it is best to choose ones that have some relevance to your chosen career path. For example, I am taking digital photography next year, which should help with my intended journalism track.

Lastly, I would like to comment on online vs. in-class. Personally, I have found that I lack the discipline for online courses.

In theory, it works great with your schedule, since you can do it any time before the deadlines. Unfortunately, in my case that means that I end up putting it off indefinitely. It’s a lot easier to blow off work when you don’t have to face your professor and fellow students every week. Plus, part of why I am attending university is for the social experience, and you don’t get that with online courses. But that’s just me, perhaps online would suit you better, especially if you have a job outside of school, or if you live far away from campus. I used to have a system where I would take one online course and the rest would be inperson, but from now on, I will be taking only in-class courses whenever possible.

We’ll see how it works out. Choose whatever mixture works best for you, and don’t be afraid to experiment if you find that you are struggling.

Under normal circumstances, the B.C. Liberal provincial leadership race would not factor much into my daily thoughts. Yeah, it’s going to be important down the line, but I don’t really care which dull candidate I’m going to have to be disappointed in, come the next provincial election. Inevitably I’ll have reason to be upset when the electoral reform referendum fails, because we are a society of losers who can do little right but complain, and who, for some reason, trust the B.C. Liberals to tell us that things that are “new” can’t be trusted. I don’t look forward to that hellscape of shattered optimism for future generations and society, but I’d rather be suprised by a win, than let down by a loss.

However, now that I’ve started following more provincial political actors and journalists on Twitter, I’ve gone and got myself riled up by a stray tweet. On December 1, at 1:09 p.m. (just mere moments before I was put under for quadruple wisdom tooth extraction, which seemed fitting for some reason) Abbotsford MLA Mike de Jong (guys, it’s Mike instead of Michael, because he’s relatable now) tweeted: “The single most important thing a government can do is ensure that young people recieve a good education. #ylw #bcpoli #bclib18” Granted, he was finance minister for the last couple of years, so this isn’t completely his glass castle, but as one of the front runners in the race, and I’d argue most recognizable names — hometown hero and all — the attention now is warranted. I’m sure there are some people who might have come off worse — former Minister of Education Mike Bernier (famed for firing members of a

Vancouver school board), and especially former leader Christy Clark herself — so let’s maybe focus on the assertion, rather than who said it.

For the B.C. Liberals to pretend they give a shit — now — is almost as funny as the fact they tried shaking the baggage that comes with their “big money” image by having entry fees and spending caps almost double that of the NDP’s for this leadership race. (Mike and his buddies can spend up to $600,000, and need just a tenth of that just to enter.) Image what all that money could do, and more importantly could HAVE done, if it had been used to cover the cost of adult education, upgrading, and English language courses to help people get their lives moving forward. (They are tuition-free again under new government.)

If only their famed “balanced budgets” (teetering on funds siphoned from ICBC surpluses) had prioritized investing into keeping class sizes small, and not in dragging out a series of court cases with the B.C. Federation of Teachers since the early 2000s that eventually saw the government shamed in a Supreme Court ruling last year — forcing us to now play catchup to upgrade facilities, hire teachers, and evaluate the lasting damage of education cuts over the past decade.

For the record, it was just one tweet among many, and he does have good ideas to offer (and maybe the rest of the party does too). It’s just infuriating to see that some of this ambition wasn’t around when any of these people had the power to actually do something about them.

I’m sure I’ll say the same about the next opposition, but this just happens to be the first stage of my life when I’m interested, and grumpy enough to pay attention to provincial politics.

Traditions are like candy canes: once you start your journey through the candyland of peppermint goodness, it becomes a never ending sticky mess. Whenever anyone picks up your half-eaten candy cane, or decides to begin eating one of their own, they activate the spread of the virus, infecting families, communities, and even the whole world! Christmas, Kwanza, Hanukkah, and many other holidays come flooding in at the beginning of winter, ready to contaminate cultures around the world. Although most of these holidays have positive values and bring families together, there is one that has taken Santa’s sleigh reigns, and driven the rest out of the way. I am the first to admit that I celebrate Christmas for one reason: I always have. And I won’t deny, the presents are a plus.

For my family and me, that’s the way it has always been. At the beginning of December, the Christmas lights are up, and before I know it we’ll be driving to a u-cut tree farm to pick out the tallest tree, only for it to slowly decay in the middle of our living room.

Why is it that we robotically follow these traditions as if they’re second nature? Many customs and beliefs are passed down from generations before, which creates mindless repetition and uncertainty of the tradition’s origin. Each person has their own thoughts toward the winter holidays, and many seem to accept whatever ‘cool’ new trends are thrown their way. Over time, traditions undergo many alterations as they morph into new activities and events. When Christmas began, I highly doubt they celebrated with gingerbread house competitions and Michael Bublé’s greatest Christmas hits.

The main idea behind the holidays is to enjoy free time with friends and family, to appreciate sacred religious days, and relish in the added benefits of gifts, candy, and chocolates. When beneficial circumstances arise, is it not human nature to accept them with open arms? This inherently selfish nature of the human race has been continuously exploited by businesses and salespeople for as long as the concept of ownership has existed, which explains the influx of sales during the holiday season. Companies are able to blow out all of their old product at discount prices, while still making a profit, and clearing room for the new year. Although the sales seem to benefit the consumer, businesses never risk profits for the sake of the customer. The lower the sale, the lower the standard cost for the company, revealing the true profit margins of a business.

Like a disease, traditions tend to feed off of anything they can grab a hold of. Growing up, I spent the holidays with either my mom’s side of the family or my dad’s, and both have their own versions of what Christmas entails. The years I was with my mom, we would always cut down our own tree from a farm, decorate it as a family, bake tree-shaped sugar cookies, and open one gift on Christmas Eve. However, when I was with my dad’s family, we would always visit my grandparents, spend Christmas day with my cousins, and have Christmas dinner with my extended family. How is that, although I was a part of both, the traditions were so drastically different? Obviously, the spread of this so-called Christmas spirit has been effective in its contamination. Reflecting on the holidays has revealed to me the influence of family, repetition, the economy, and of course, the ugly Christmas sweaters.

Woah, I’m halfway there

Red Velvet

As this semester draws to a close, I’ve hit the halfway point in my current program.

While it’s possible I may decide to stay in school, and pursue something further, it’s strange to think that the whole experience may be into its latter half soon. When I realized that, my first reaction was “Wow, I still feel like I’m new here.” I still feel like I did at new student orientation, when the campus was a labyrinth, and experienced students treated it like a second home. But then I stopped to consider that.

Of course I still don’t know everything about this school, I can’t list every club, or give perfect directions to every classroom, but over the time I’ve been here, I’ve become far more comfortable at the school — I go for walks and just wander the campus sometimes, without feeling like I shouldn’t be there, I take naps without it feeling weird, and it’s getting rarer and rarer for me to walk to class without seeing somebody I know. I’m not a UFV veteran by any means yet, but I’m starting to realize that maybe I’ve become one of those people I was so impressed with during my first semester.

Does anybody know what red velvet cake is supposed to taste like? Don’t get me wrong, red velvet is delicious, but as I was eating a slice of red velvet loaf from Fair Grounds, I couldn’t help but wonder what flavour red velvet has. Racking my tastebuds, I could find none. It doesn’t really taste like anything. You would think that the colour would be an indication, but it doesn’t taste like strawberry, cherry, cinnamon, or anything else you might expect. It just tastes sort of cakey, if that makes any sense. I honestly don’t get red velvet cake’s recent popularity. Maybe it’s because I’m eating the wrong kind. I’ve had red velvet loaf, and a red velvet muffin, but I can’t recall ever eating an actual slice of red velvet cake. I still enjoy it, but I think after trying it, I’ll be more likely to choose something with a flavour of its own.

I watched 309 YouTube videos last night.

Granted, most of the videos were less than 30 seconds long, but it still felt a little excessive. The playlist was titled “important videos,” and I guess I figured it sounded more important than writing that English paper I’d been meaning to get to. Lately, I’ve been watching a lot of YouTube videos, when really all I want to do is watch The X-Files — but I never end up doing it. I think it’s because when I play YouTube videos, I’m able to trick myself into thinking I’m not procrastinating, because they’re so short. The amount of time I end up wasting watching dumb videos usually exceeds the amount of time it would have taken to watch The X-Files anyways, but I can’t seem to stop this cycle.

When those 309 videos finally came to an end, all I could think was “Man, why do I do this to myself?” as I continued to save “important videos 2” to my “watch later” list.

Net neutrality has been a major talking point for many pundits and publications lately, and there are some who still don’t really know what it’s all about. Since its inception, the internet has been neutral.

This means that, so long as you have the correct address of a page, and said page has enough servers, you should be able to access it without any outside mitigation or interference. That’s a neutral internet.

Now, let’s say a network provider, like ComCast, Rogers, or Bell, strikes a business partnership with a streaming service. Hulu, for example. Well, without a neutral internet, said network provider would be able to drastically slow down your connection to Netflix in an attempt to draw more customers to their preferred streaming site. Applied across the board, this practice, which limits the information people can access based on their ability to pay exorbitant fees, is draconian at best, and Orwellian in its censorship of information at worst.

Santa Claus came to town

Eating, drinking, and enjoying an overall sense of merriment at the 28th annual Abbotsford Winter Jubilee

On December 2, from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. in Abbotsford’s historic downtown core, the 28th annual Winter Jubilee kick-started the local holiday season. This free holiday celebration featured the arrival procession of Mr. Claus and Mrs. Claus, followed by the official Abbotsford downtown Christmas tree lighting at 6:00 p.m. that evening.

Live performances on the main stage included local artists and organizations Creative Edge, Danceworx, the Cadet Band, Ryan McAllister, and Kyler Pierce and the Spice Elves. A craft beer and wine garden was available, provided by Old Yale, Fieldhouse, and Ravens brewing companies. Appearances in addition to the jolly man in red included Frosty the Snowman, various reindeer, and even Olaf and the Grinch.

Most downtown businesses remained open to join in the celebration, and had a hand in producing an entertaining experience for everybody. The numerous attractions included performances in the middle of the street by organizations such as RopeWorks, which had kids demonstrating their fancy jump rope skills.

Classic Christmas music could be heard over loudspeakers when the live carolers were absent. Also, vari-

ous selfie stations were set up, including one with a fake snow machine provided by RBC. In addition, the event was very family friendly, boasting a bouncy castle, face painting, and pony rides for children.

Along Montrose Avenue, vendors could be found by the dozen in markets hosted by both the Abbotsford Arts Council and local downtown business Spruce Collective.

Spruce Collective’s market was placed alongside the Arts Council Market featuring a curated list of local vendors and artisans selling their handmade wares and vintage finds. The featured vendors included big names in the local scene such as Confetti Floral Design, Locomotive Clothing Co., New Moon Tea Co., Wildflower Botanicals, and the Wild Outdoors Club.

Attendees were encouraged to stick around for the entire event, with the promise of a festive fireworks display at 8:30 p.m., which did not disappoint. Unfortunately, the event was not graced with the luxury of dry weather. By the end, most attendees were soaking wet, and hurried off to their vehicles as soon as the fireworks ended. Despite the cold and wet conditions, the rain certainly did not put a damper on the spirit of the event, and in a way, was quite representative of a West Coast Christmas.

Winter Jubilee was hosted by Dis-

cover Downtown Abbotsford, and was presented by Tourism Abbotsford, Coast Capital Savings, and Upper Montrose. Various Abbotsford clubs and associations lined the streets, in addition to the vendor markets and food trucks. UFV also had a booth promoting our programs, and also offering cookie decorating and crafts for kids.

It is not often that Abbotsford has the capacity to bring people together like this. Previous year’s Christmas tree lighting ceremonies have proved dull, and have seen a visible decrease in attendance. This event, in conjunction with the success of this past summer’s Berry Beat Festival, could see the low turnouts turning on its heel, and encourage Abbotsford residents to take pride in their community events again.

UFV panel raises awareness for action on violence against women Taking action on violence against women in our community CASSIE DE JONG CULTURE & EVENTS EDITOR

A panel featuring various UFV professors and other qualified individuals, speaking on the topic of violence against women, and the action we can take to help end it, took place in room B121 from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 29.

The event was part of an ongoing 16 days of activism against gender violence. The list of panelists included professors Satwinder Bains and Anita Vaillancourt, as well as Elsie Goerzen, program coordinator of the End Abuse campaign from the local Mennonite Central Committee (MCC).

The panel had also scheduled professor Fiona MacDonald to speak, but unfortunately she was not able to attend. She was replaced by Greg Mather, manager of student wellness and development at student services.

The panelists took advantage of the small size of the gathering, and took turns speaking in a casual, inviting fashion. Goerzen began by speaking about her organization, and the programs it offers. MCC’s End Abuse program provides communities with workshops, support groups, and training, in hopes of reducing cases of abuse. She then spoke about their part-

ner group, Home Improvement, which is a support program for men looking to learn healthier relationship habits.

She also mentioned WReveal’ution, a short film by the Abbotsford Police Department about relational violence, which she hopes to screen at UFV sometime after Christmas.

Next up was Bains, who reminded attendees that support usually happens either after or during the incident, when it should be taking place before anything can happen at all. If we put more of our energy into intervention, we have a better chance at saving lives. She noted that no single factor is behind partner violence, yet it is telling that the messages and imagery promoting such actions are rampant in the clothing, toys, and television shows we market to young boys.

Traditionally, we speak more about women’s victimization than men’s perpetration. However, the recent case against American film producer Harvey Weinstein brought forth an opportunity for change.

In this instance, there has been more focus on the male perpetrator, which should serve as an example to our current justice system. Bains ended her piece by stating, “Women experiencing these issues often feel as if they are in a dark tunnel or a lone-

Vaillancourt, being of Metis descent, then proceeded to discuss the Indigenous missing and murdered women and girls across Canada. She noted that there has been an effort in Saskatchewan to monitor the response rates of these issues, and British Columbia should follow suit, especially since Indigenous women are statistically more likely to be attacked by a stranger.

She also discussed the many issues within our current system that need to be resolved, such as that fact that while we provide shelters and support to women in need, the amount of services available don’t meet the demand. In some cases, shelters are even unable to accommodate women with children. Also, we often forgive a perpetrator for consuming alcohol, yet we shame a victim for doing the same thing. Likewise, we regularly shame men who claim abuse, and deny them the chance to heal. Despite the overwhelmingly negative statistics, Vaillancourt said, “If you ever think that change can’t happen, it’s a lot easier than you think.”

Mather’s focus was on sexualized violence that takes place in post-secondary institutions. He believes our current rates of reported incidents are off because of

current gender expectations of who can and cannot come forward to seek support.

This is also in part due to the fact that rates of violence between men, women, and transgender individuals vary greatly.

Mather claimed that the terms “locker room talk” and “boys will be boys” are unacceptable, yet are still often used in conversation. By rejecting phrases like these, we can all be part of the change. Mather expressed his pride in the work that UFV has done in terms of policy regarding these issues, as we need to be a leader in change.

The group then opened up for a general discussion about the issues addressed. The conclusion of the panel ended with the overall agreement that raising awareness about these issues is only the first step. If you wish to participate in action on violence against women, there will be a candlelight vigil held on Wednesday, December 6 from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the UFV Chilliwack Five Corners campus.

The vigil is in recognition of the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in Canada, and is also the anniversary of the 1989 murders of 14 young women at l’École Polytechnique in Montréal.

Gaming for a good cause Winter FUNderland brings gamers and students together to raise money for the SUS Angel Tree

A 24-hour gaming marathon began in Evered Hall at UFV’s Abbotsford campus, Friday, December 1, running from 10:00 a.m. to the same time the next morning. The event was called Winter FUNderland, and was a collaboration between the E-Sports Valley team, the Pen and Paper Tabletop club, the Computer Student Association, and SUS. All proceeds from the event went to the SUS Angel Tree program, which exists to help students who are also parents buy presents for their children. The tree set up in the Student Union Building is decorated with the names of the kids involved.

Any and all games could be seen on the sea of screens at the event, including Overwatch, Super Smash Bros., Skyrim, Pokémon, and more. Even a GameCube made an appearance. A mountain of board games were available for gamers to sign out, and attendees even had the chance to take

a crack at virtual reality gaming.

All the consoles and board games were provided by volunteers and other individuals who have helped out with the event in previous years. Gamers were encouraged to bring and set up their own private PCs. The fee for setting up your own system was $10, which counted as another donation to the Angel Tree cause.

The ambience for the event was made perfect by the epic gaming playlist blaring overhead, which was composed of game scores, movie themes, and other pop culture favourites. The snack counter was also intensely stocked with gaming classics such as Mountain Dew and Doritos, but also featured rare items such as Vanilla Coke. The organizers admitted to raiding grocery stores in the states for “the good stuff,” and bringing it back up through the border. Truly, they are gaming heroes.

CONTINUED FROM PG. 14 Pen and Paper Tabletop Club, was the head of advertising for Winter FUNderland, as well as an organizer and administrative volunteer. In an interview, Sanders gave us some details regarding the tournaments, raffle, and overall workings of the event.

“This year, we have a League of Legends tournament going on, we have multiple Magic the Gathering tournaments going on, and we have lots of one-off Dungeons and Dragons games for people who don’t know how to play, or are nervous getting into it,” she said. “We have our pros here who are willing to help you get through your first game, and make it a fun experience.”

cluded memorabilia such as games, figurines, collectables, and even the Master Sword itself.

The same went for the raffles, for which tickets were $2 per, and you were able to select which prize pool you were drawn for. The raffle draws were one of the most popular elements of FUNderland, and therefore one of the bigger pulls for raising funds.

While no businesses were involved in the planning of FUNderland, House of Cards arrived in the evening to help with the Magic the Gathering card games and tournaments by running them properly and legally.

The proceeds of anything they collected during the event also went straight to the Angel Tree program. As Sanders states, “It’s

not for profit for them in any way, shape, or form.”

Doors closed at 11 p.m. during the event because of safety procedure, and while attendees could leave any time, they were not allowed back in until the doors reopened at 7:00 a.m. the next morning.

Every cent collected from the event was 100 per cent not for profit. This included everything from the prize raffles, to the food and drinks. What better way for a group of gamers and nerds to enter the Christmas season, than to game all night for a good cause?

Or they are perhaps simply a group to whom violence and its prevalence in our midst is most ironic, compared to the tragic response that many react to it with.

The indie-action film Bushwick has recently made its way to Canadian Netflix, and has been on my wishlist for a while — if only because Aesop Rock, one of my favourite rappers and producers of all time, was in charge of the film’s soundtrack.

Taking place in a working-class Brooklyn neighbourhood being invaded by radical Texan secessionists, the film’s interesting angle taps into today’s politics, even though its production schedule had it filming in 2015. Dave Bautista in a leading role as Stupe, a grizzled and complicated war veteran, might also be appealing to those who have fond memories of the last two Guardians of the Galaxy films. However, there is failure in both these regards, both to the depth of the script and themes, and Bautista’s inability to compellingly portray serious emotion in the heavier scenes. But, before I bury this film, there are some positives that make it worth at least streaming in the background while you do more important things, like scroll Twitter or clean your living room.

Aesop Rock delivered with the soundtrack, setting a tone while being true to his style: unabashedly weird, urban, and gritty. If only it could have been mixed above the dialogue. The camera work features tight editing and ambitious long takes that really give a sense of space and movement. The plot follows Lucy, a young student, just a few blocks and house by house from a subway station to a U.S. military safe zone as she meets up with Stupe, other residents, looters, and the invading black-clad pri-

vate military soldiers who are revealed to be former fellow Americans trying to strongarm the U.S. government into accepting their terms.

Between seeing citizens armed with lacrosse sticks, storm blockades, and Hasidic Jews and minority youth engaging in running firefights with mercenaries, the action and choreography is a strong point in the film. Funny enough, the visuals in Bushwick reminded me quite a bit of what a better game Tom Clancy’s The Division could have been, with occupied city streets, and the New York tenacity that shines through in the supporting cast and extras. This could have been a better film if it kept up the action, the confusing mess of the war zone and mystery of trying to get our bearings alongside the characters, and not gotten bogged down by trying to make Stupe or Lucy more interesting than they could be given the situation.

Between the absurdity of the little backstory we’re given to explain the fighting, and a hamfisted scene in which Stupe reveals his family died on 9/11 (which is overly-dramatized to the point of unintentional comedy), the film gets lost at trying to make too many shallow allusions to bigger ideas that the writers obviously weren’t equipped to flesh out.

I still don’t know what the point of the “story” itself was, but the concept and visuals are cool enough that, if the film was recut and expanded into a longer music video, it might be redeemable.

As it stands, it’s another interesting concept held back by poor acting and writing.

Run the Jewels “A Christmas Fucking Miracle” If you want your Christmas bombastic, belligerent, and full of unrelentingly comedic profanity, El-P and Killer Mike’s “A Christmas Fucking Miracle” is just that. It could be successfully argued that the Run the Jewels deep cut has little or nothing to do with Christmas. If we’re judging this track based only on narrative content, you’d be right. The main hook is centered around sleigh-bells, which usher in one of the most gleeful displays of self-consciousness by the rap duo to appear on their debut. Even then, is that what Christmas has been turned into? A stylistic nod in the instrumentals of the

Louis Armstrong “Christmas in New Orleans” last song on a record as profane as it is glorious? Might be we’ve lost our Christmas spirit.

But, is there not something distinctly Christmas-like about two of the most over-the-top emcees in hip-hop ending their much-anticipated collaborative record with a glitzy, niche track that (although great), gets old quick? Is it not akin to a five-year old’s experience in wishing for a toy, only to play obsessively with it then, come March, forget it entirely?

If that’s not the spirit of Christmas, then what is?

LCD Soundsystem “Christmas Will Break Your Heart” Christmas, Christmas time in near, time for toys and time for cheer— Wait, scratch that — Christmas isn’t always the most cheerful time of year for everyone; at least, that’s what LCD Soundsystem’s “Christmas Will Break Your Heart” tells us. James Murphy’s take on the holiday season is refreshing, and reminds me of the pressure we face to be surrounded by loved ones during the holidays. Lyrics like “if your world is feeling small” and “there’s no one on the phone you feel close enough to call” sug-

it’s entirely original and unique to Armstrong. I don’t think anyone could recreate it if they tried.

Maybe it’s because I’m partial to jazz and Armstrong’s rough, gravelly voice, or maybe I’m just sick of top-40 pop renditions of the same Christmas songs over and over (it’s probably both), but “Christmas in New Orleans” is officially my new favourite Christmas song.

And who knows, maybe I’ll book myself a trip to New Orleans next December.

Ella Fitzgerald “Frosty the Snowman”

gest that for some, Christmastime can feel even more lonely than usual. The slow beat, mixed with the soft jingle bells and the piano, feels calming, despite the sorrowful lyrics. Despite all this, the end of the song encompasses a sense of hope for the holiday season: that there’s at least one person Murphy wants to come home to. So, stop breaking your eardrums over squealing Chipmunk songs, and break your heart instead (in a good way) by turning this song on.

Usually, I’m not one for Christmas music; I would rather get frostbite than listen to “Jingle Bells” one more time, and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” makes me want to stuff ornaments in my ears.

“Frosty the Snowman” is no different, but Fitzgerald transforms what was once a repetitive, rather overdone song into a masterpiece (a Christmas miracle). Her smooth, honeyed voice seems to guide the medley of horns and cymbals, and is perfectly complemented by the harmony of

This is real holiday music: bright lights, glitter, and pizzaz. Obnoxiously Christmasy enough to keep the adrenaline pumping, heavy downbeats to keep you grooving.

I think what makes this song so dang good is the fact that it’s original; Armstrong avoided regurgitating the same Christmas songs that have been played for hundreds of years, and took the time to create an entirely new masterpiece, complete with his signature style, in which he gives specific nods to New Orleans (the “Magnolia trees at night / sparkling bright,” and their unique “dixieland Santa Claus / leading the band / to a good old Creole beat.”) It’s no traditional white Christmas, and that’s what makes it memorable — this is not just another Christmas song re-wrapped or re-gifted;

the backup vocalists, which all intertwine together to produce a treat for the ears that’s not syrupy or sentimental. Fitzgerald’s voice is the real star of the show, managing to be simultaneously powerful and velvety, lulling the listener into a surprisingly festive mood. If I can say one thing, it’s this: I could listen to Fitzgerald sing Christmas music all day, and still not tire of it.

The Dolmen Winter Solstice (Album) rhythm.

The trouble with most Christmas parties is the slow, droning, Anglo-influence Christmas tunes. They trudge through complex arpeggios over long-winded choral moanings.

Baroque? More like Baroquen. If there ain’t no heavy downbeat, I can’t move my feet. Give me the groovy, swoovy, Bootsy.

Also, the Snoop Dogg cameo is bound to impress.

So when you’re arguing with family about politics, religion, or the usefulness of your arts degree, explode that holiday monotony to bits with a funktastic dance off to Bootsy Collins.

If you’re looking to spice up your celebration of winter with some Celtic, Paganthemed tunes, look no further than The Dolmen, and their album Winter Solstice. With a heavy folk sound, and a mix of modern and traditional instruments, some music is fit for dancing (or at least tapping your feet) around a bonfire, while other songs would feel right at home as you curl up on the couch with a mug of hot chocolate.

The Dolmen show an impressive range.

“Frosty Solstice Morn” might catch the ear of Great Big Sea fans, “Midnight Garden” is a moody, acoustic piece, and “Bringing The Outside In” would fit in with any

catchy, uplifting, modern Christmas music, (just without the Christian underpinnings.) Instead of those themes, the songs celebrate the changing of seasons, the majesty of nature, and a variety of Pagan/ Wiccan themes.

While some songs are complex, a large number are memorable enough that, were they given the same exposure and amount of covers, they could easily take their place amongst the canon of holiday music. Until that happens, you can check them out yourself, and make them a part of your holiday listening.

On October 13, Netflix released their newest original series — Mindhunter. This is the latest project from David Fincher, who is known for Gone Girl, Fight Club, and Zodiac. The series follows FBI agents Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (Holt McCallany) as they travel around the U.S. interviewing various serial killers to try and understand their psyche, and the thought process behind their crimes. Later, Ford and Tench are joined by Wendy Carr (Anna Torv), a psychology professor at Boston University, who helps the FBI investigators develop a categorization system for the different types of killers, to help to understand them better.

Netflix offers a slew of true crime and crime related movies and TV shows. What makes Mindhunter different, and so interesting? First of all, the show takes its content seriously. Forensic Files or Dateline NBC, other popular crime shows, include cheesy music, overdone edits, and are completely over-dramatized. It’s loveable and addicting, but sometimes we want something more real, as opposed to something you can take lightly.

Nothing about Mindhunter feels fake.

Even though it is fiction (mostly based on true events) it develops so much like real life. This is due to the fact that the show follows a relatively simple storyline. Ford and Tench travel across the U.S. educating other police officers, and interviewing serial killers in the process. They go on various flights, road trips, and stay in a number of cheap motels. They both work during the day, and go home to their wife/girlfriend in the evening. It’s very simple, quite vanilla, nothing groundbreaking. To the average viewer, it is entirely relatable.

Also, the concepts portrayed and discussed in Mindhunter are groundbreaking in relation to the plot’s setting in the 1970s.

Ford and Tench are questioning the way their agency thinks about and deals with

serial killers. Before the actual Mindhunter book was written by John Douglas in 1995, it was assumed that serial killers and murderers were born that way, and that nothing could have stopped them from killing.

However, Tench and Ford question this theory; This effort by the FBI in the 1970s changed the way we viewed and studied serial killers. This connection to real life may add to many viewers’ fascination with the series.

Although the plot is simple, it feels unique, and is completely intriguing. David Fincher’s varied but captivating cinematography is evident in this show. The show avoids hand-held or steadicam shots.

All shots are taken using tripods, which creates a precise, almost-robotic camera movement. The entire season also has an earthy, yellow-toned, dull colour palette, which complements its themes of mystery and gravitas. The overall lighting in the show is dark, light is used sparingly, and in very specific locations. For example, in episode six, Tench and Ford are interviewing a character named Benjamin. The lighting in the room is incredibly muted, with the focus or centre of light on Benjamin. It causes the viewer to focus on what is in the scene, and really take it all in.

As far as the content goes, it is fascinating. The script is well thought out, keeping the viewer informed throughout, but takes care never to reveal too much about what’s next. It’s intelligent, and portrays the characters as such. The plot is alluring, mysterious, and amusing all at once. You always want to know what’s about to happen next. It’s one of those shows that keeps you guessing, but is never too confusing. Mindhunter is intelligent, absorbing, sexy, dark, twisted, and charming all in one.

Anyone who enjoys a good drama, is into crime shows and serial killers, or is looking for a full season to binge watch, would thoroughly enjoy this.
