Why hearing matters

Hearing is a precious sense that shapes our interactions, emotions and experiences. It connects us to the world, enabling us to communicate, enjoy music, and be aware of our surroundings. Understanding the significance of hearing health is crucial as it profoundly impacts our overall wellbeing and quality of life.

We hear with our brains

When all parts of the hearing process are working, our brains can easily turn sounds into meaning. Well-fitted hearing aids support your brain in getting the most out of the sounds you hear.

Both your ears work together to pick up sounds occurring around you

Inside your ears, these sounds are converted into nerve impulses

Your brain makes sense of the sounds by matching them to sounds stored in your memory

The nerve impulses travel to your brain and are analysed by different brain centres

46% of people in the UK have never had their hearing checked. More men are affected by hearing loss than women.

Understanding the signs and symptoms of

hearing loss

Hearing loss is a common condition that can impact people of all ages. Recognising the signs and symptoms is essential for early detection and timely intervention, and by understanding the indicators, it’s possible to take proactive steps to address hearing concerns and improve overall quality of life.

One of the early signs of hearing loss is difficulty understanding speech, especially in noisy environments, having to ask others to repeat themselves or struggling to follow group conversations. Muffled or distorted sound perception might also present itself.

Social isolation can be another symptom. You have to put more effort into communicating when you have hearing loss, that’s why individuals may withdraw, avoiding group settings where challenges arise, leading to feelings of loneliness and frustration.

In some cases, those with hearing loss may have to turn the volume up on the television or phone. Family members may notice devices are set louder than usual.

Tinnitus, a ringing or buzzing in the ears, can have various underlying causes, and can accompany hearing impairment.

People experiencing any of these signs and symptoms should have a hearing assessment, from which the appropriate treatment can be identified. Early intervention can limit the impact of hearing loss and slow down its progression, enhance communication, social engagement and overall wellbeing—allowing individuals to continue enjoying life’s rich tapestry of sounds. Be that step closer to a world of clearer, more vibrant hearing experiences.

Hear life in c o l o u r

While our sight and hearing are clearly independent inextricably bound—a life without either would be very dull indeed. Being immersed in soundscapes and landscapes allows us to not only appreciate the full spectrum of sound and colour, but also fills our lives with energy and fulfilment. A small impairment to our sight or hearing can make us feel disconnected from our world, hence why it’s so important to have them checked

The joy of our child or grandchild’s laughter, the punchline of a joke, even that little bit of gossip, can all bring such colour to our lives, and so a world without hearing them can feel a little grey. Similarly, when our vision becomes impaired, the true beauty of what we see is lost.

Both sound and light share the fundamental nature of vibration and are measured by frequency. Frequencies affect us humans almost all of the time, evoking emotional, physical, psychological and behavioural responses, as

well as visceral responses deep inside the body.

In turn, our life is given energy, feeling, emotion and memory—all triggered by what we see and hear— and would be nothing without sound and light. And so, if we take a moment to think about how it would feel not to hear the sounds of nature, of birdsong, or the rustling of leaves or running water in a stream, it’s hard to fathom. Such precious sounds to us all, and ones we must ensure we preserve by applying the same care to our hearing as we do our sight.
