What are your building blocks? What is making up every cell of your body? You have heard the famous quote “You are what you eat”, but have you ever really thought about the nutrients in your food? Complete proteins, or “higher quality proteins, come from foods containing all of the essential amino acids in the quantity and correct ratio to… allow for tissue growth and repair” [1]. Meat and milk are two sources of complete proteins. Shouldn’t you have the optimal proteins to grow and repair the various parts of your body? Doug & Kim Wily at Larga Vista Ranch are raising natural grass-fed cows that are used for both meat and dairy. The nutritional differences between the meat of pasture-raised animals and feed-lot raised animals are significant: 1.)Lower in Fat and Calories: The meat from

grass-fed beef is lower in fat and has less calories than grain-fed meat. 2.) Extra Omega-3s: There are two to four times more omega-3 fatty acids in grass-fed animals than meat from grain-fed animals [2]. 3.)CLA: CLA, conjugated linoleic acid, is a “good fat” that may be one of the body’s most potent defenses against cancer. When ruminants are raised on fresh pasture alone, between three to five times more CLA may be found in their meat versus the meat from animals fed conventional diets [3]. 4.) Vitamin E: In a study done at Colorado State University - Fort Collins, meat from cattle that had been raised on a pasture had four times higher the amount of vitamin E than the meat from cattle raised on a feedlot [4].
