Our founding fathers knew what they were doing when they formed our Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution. There was separation of powers and checks and balances to make sure that those participating couldn’t get too powerhungry. It was fairly simple. And there was “hope”. Hope with a very-well organized, wellthought-out plan.

How in the world did our young country get so off-track? Let’s cut the “you-know-what” and take a hard look at what our freedoms and liberties were, are, and where they are going.

For example – we are free as consumers to buy whatever we want. Not too long ago, the founder of a well-known corporation, set out to sell American-made goods at low prices.

Nothing wrong with that. People in our country made products (got paid to do such), a company purchased them, then sold them back to people in communities around the country.

That is a full-circle of a product life-cycle, all of which were taking place in our country and all of which had at least some monetary benefit to everyone in the supply chain.

We are all on a budget of one kind or another.

We all have to choose amongst quantity and quality, and many of us right now have to sacrifice the organic-labeled apples for a bigger bag of conventional apples at the grocery store. These choices must be made, and yet if we could somehow take a system that was working, and bring it back, on a larger scale, couldn’t we have both low prices AND quality goods – while employing people from our own

communities? Surely.

Today we have less farmers and more gargantuan super-scale mega-farms owned and run by machines, cheap labor, and a multi-national corporation (yay comparative advantage). Today at that box-store you can buy a whole lot more for a whole lot less (Save Money – Live Better), but at what price to our community – our local farmers, local artisans, local labor, young adults who will soon be looking for jobs – for careers? There is a place for big business – and now folks – there is a place for you to stand up for what we CAN control and where we CAN make a difference – and small businesses and supporting local as much as one possibly can - will make or break our country. The c old and dar ker days are c oming. You don’t have to bec ome a c asualt y of the winter blues. It is possible to f ight the fatigue and less motivational per iod sometimes known as mild depression. In life there is no “magic bullet ” or “magic pill.” However we need to take responsibilit y for our health and bec ome educ ated. Ultimately it is up to us to take c are of ourselves. Here is a checklist of three simple steps you c an take to stay dr iven through the winter.

1. Seeing is b elieving ­ Lights are ex tremely impor tant. The average of f ic e lighting provides 10 0 10 0 0 lux, a measurement of light. A sunny day c an provide 10 0,0 0 0 lux.

Being around more light at least 3 0 minutes a day c an improve symptoms dramatic ally. Check out SA D lights online.

2 . Motivation by ing estion — Essential fat t y acids are a must for ver y high rates of brain

The Frustrated Recycler - By Tisha Casida Let’s go ahead and put it out there. We here at That’s Natural believe that we have come up with a way to start a full-service recycling center here in Pueblo. We have the perfect building, situated on the perfect land with the right zoning and great access to both rail and the Interstate.

We believe that this could be run by a private entity for profit. And we believe that this forprofit could have non-profit ties that link the community, the environment, and the health and well-being of citizens in our community.

Could a non-profit be profit-driven? Could “donations” of recyclable materials be given to this entity, and then written-off as such on one’s taxes at the end of the year? Could the operations of the facility and re-sale/distribution of the recyclable materials be run by individuals in our community, promoting what we like to call “enhancing economic development?” Could we make this facility so incredibly busy and successful that we realize profits within a couple of years and then donate these profits to nonprofits within the southern part of the state?

We think this recycling center could create jobs, recycle goods, and give back to the community.

And we believe that we will need each and everyone’s help to pull this off.

And we believe that if we make this happen, we

are going to be able to help a lot of people, not only here, but also in other parts of our country, as well. So we are in the process of planning our recycling center, and we are recording the whole process as a documentary.

To top it all of, I am personally using this market research and collected data my thesis at Colorado State University-Pueblo. Here, I am attempting to use an input-output model and established multipliers, to see how a recycling center would affect our local economy. (Hey – I really am not 100% sure what those mean either, again, I am just “putting this out there.”

I know that the end result will be good for my community).

Are you interested? We have a group of about 25 people that are in contact with us, ready and willing to make this recycling center a reality.

And we could use about 150,000 more, because it is really going to take our whole community to make this project as successful as we would like.

The large commercial farming operations, oil processing, etc., must exist if we are to continue our consumption lifestyle in America - and that’s just how it is. Many people will focus time and energy on trying to manipulate and change these massive systems (which is noteworthy), but likely not the most efficient use of one’s time. Writing letters, holding protest signs, etc. has a place – but it will not have the same effect as exercising your buying power as a consumer.

support very big businesses with vested interests in cheap products at whatever cost – including your health, your environment, your job security, and your freedom of choice (the more centralized any system becomes the more vulnerable becomes a population – not as many choices equates to a loss of freedom and loss of power over your choice – your dollar – your vote). Today, we are still free to make the decision of who we support and tell those big vested interests that we are educated, concerned, and wary citizens that are not about to give up our rights for a buck. We vote with our dollar, we make our choices and we show those guys what we believe in and are willing to take.

Americans need to take back the political system and promote small business, like micro farming and regional manufacturing. People need to re-focus their energy on what they can actually do to improve life for themselves and others where they live, and set the example for others to follow. Accountable and actionable people make a sustainable planet because they all have the same interest - which is quality of life. People should fight back when they are being challenged by big government or big business - when these entities are trying to stop people because of their success (because these large interests will no longer make the bulk of the money). People should not fight when they could spend that time and energy on productive activities like those mentioned above – just living it, being the example, buying the sustainable products, supporting local artisans, talking about these choices to one’s circleof-influence. These types of positive actions can create so much more change than trying to fight certain systems that are in place (in fact they are “fighting” those systems, but it is much more efficient and productive and actionable).

As Tod Murphy had quoted in a book called Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver, “We often have the form of liberty, but not the substance.” Wake up people.

Sustainable Circle - Local Artisans & Galleries

Long ago, before our holidays were hijacked by corporations, gift giving was a simple act—a thoughtful expression of gratitude, love or appreciation represented by a small token. A pair of hand-knitted socks, a tray of cookies, a set of kitschy potholders fresh off grandma’s sewing machine.

Not so any longer. Busy lives have overtaken the time needed to produce those handmade gifts and consumerism has changed our expectations. The act of giving has been reduced to obligation.

Receiving has become an entitlement.

Corporations feed on that knowledge, spending billions to get us to buy their products every year. Gifting has become a chore, a dreaded trip to the mall with our credit cards, choosing gifts for picky kids, family members who live far away, and the people we work with every day.

We worry that they’ll be offended if we

don’t buy a gift, or disappointed if we buy the wrong thing. Many of us have given up on choosing gifts entirely. We buy the receiver a gift card.

“Pick out your own gift,” we say. Or we hit the discount retailers to stretch our borrowed dollars, buying things that no one really wants.
