Several of our team members had the opportunity to apply for a grant from the USDA’s Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) Program. We were awarded in November, and are now creating a curriculum for elementary and middle school students called, “Farm to Fork - Connecting Our Youth with Sustainable Agriculture”. We will be working with the Pueblo School for Arts & Sciences, Heaton Middle School (recently awarded a grant to install alternative power sources for their school), and the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center. Douglas We here in Colorado just suffered through the longest-ever ballot, then spent weeks watching how the results are likely to affect our lives. Traditionally, after an election, we put away politics and get on with our lives.

I want to encourage you to not do this, but rather become more involved in the political process.

The last 16 years have polarized this country’s political beliefs in bizarre and amazing ways. The extreme distance that people have put between each other under the banners of “liberal” and “conservative” have silenced political discussion and brought serious discourse down to “you’re an idiot”.

I am very liberal on certain issues, quite conservative on others, and middle-of-theroad moderate on others. I suspect that you are, too, but the volatile political climate works to corner us into identifying ourselves, both publicly and to privately, as one thing or another, forcing us to ally ourselves with things we disagree with because there are other things that we do. There were many names and political parties on this year’s ballot that I had never heard.

We are a nation, united not by one race, creed, or religion. We are a nation of one politic. That’s right, we, our founding fathers and all of us who have followed in their footsteps agree on one basic principal: “...

that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.” Abe Lincoln said that. You probably remember that from 8th grade history class.

Well, we need to refresh our memories.

After an election, it’s our tendency to gloat a bit, lick a few wounds, and get on with business. This is particularly dangerous in these troubling times. Now that the election is over, now is the time to get political, to stay involved. Thomas Jefferson warned us to keep tabs on our government, because, throughout history, every time someone finds that they can get away with something, they will. Keep the government accountable, keep them in check, even if and especially if your guy won.

You liked him enough to vote for him, now like him enough to keep him honest.

Don’t trust newspapers or television shows for all the facts. Remember that H.L. Mencken said “Freedom of Press is limited to those who own one.” In this day and age where virtually all news and entertainment media is in the hands of less people than were at your last dinner party, the Internet, with all its faults, is where you’re more likely to get all sides of an issue. It may take some digging, but take the time and stay informed. Get your kids involved too because the country will soon belong to them.

The election is over. You voted. Good for you. Or maybe you didn’t vote; that’s your right, too. But voting should be the least of your political involvement. Talk to people.

Talk to people who disagree with you. What about the rule of “don’t talk politics”? Ha!

If our founding fathers followed that, we wouldn’t even have a country. Talk, talk, talk, but also remember to listen. Sometimes I’m wrong. Sometimes you are, too. The other night, a co-worker and I had a few beers and talked for 3 hours about religion, and although we didn’t convince each other, it opened up both of our eyes.

Get involved, attend rallies, send emails, call your elected officials, write letters to the editor. Twice now Rep. John Salazar has called me, waking me up early in the morning to talk about letters I’ve written to him. Yes, they listen.

Don’t give up. You will be heard. It only took one woman to turn MADD into the powerhouse it is today, so start building your own house, or join someone else’s. Get involved.

It’s what keeps a people free, keeps a nation healthy, and it’s the American thing to do.

The Very Venturesome Volt

If you watch much television, you’ve seen General Motors’s commercials advertising the Chevy Volt. With all the hybrid cars out there now, it probably makes you wonder what sets the Volt apart from other hybrids.

The Volt is very different from most hybrid cars. Most hybrids on the market today are driven by a gasoline engine assisted by an electric motor. The Volt is driven solely by an electric motor and uses a gasoline engine to charge its battery pack.

By definition a hybrid vehicle must have two or more sources providing propulsion. In other words, a hybrid car must have two types of engines physically connected to the wheels.

Because the gasoline engine on the Volt does not provide propulsion, the Volt is not technically a hybrid vehicle.

Rather, it is an extended-range electric vehicle. Think of the

Volt as an electric car with a gas engine to charge the battery just in case it gets low. The Volt plugs into a standard 115 Volt 15 amp outlet like the ones most people have in their garage. After about six hours of charging the car will be ready to go. The owner will be able to charge it at night and use it during the day like most people do with their cell phones.

According to the company’s Web site, the car is to have a range of over forty miles before it uses any gas at all. Should the owner exceed forty miles the car will start its 1.4-liter fourcylinder engine to recharge the battery.

The key to Volt’s exceptional performance is a lithium-ion battery pack. Lithium-ion batteries hold much more energy in the same amount of space as lead-acid or nickel metal hydride batteries used (Continued Page 8)

Book Review - In Defense of Food

The first book I read of Michael Pollan’s, Botany of Desire, resulted in my faithful adherence to consume only organic potatoes, which at times has caused me to either go without potatoes or strategically plan my grocery shopping to find a produce department that sells organic Russets. So it was with some reluctance that I opened Pollan’s latest book, In Defense of Food, for fear my I’d lose some other loved food group. But I enjoy Pollan’s cynical outlook on the food and agricultural industries, so I knew that as painful as the consequence of reading might be I’d at least be amused in the process.

Pollan makes quick work of his conclusion and recommendation in this book, the first sentence of the introduction reveals all, “ Eat food. Not too much.

Mostly plants.” Well, I think, “This has promise, I can eat food, needed to start my New Year’s resolution, and I’m a vegetarian, so far so good.” The book is divided into three sections, the first describes how food, like a delicious ripe apple or a loaf of bread, has been reduced, modified, enhanced, and transformed into a list of nutrients some to be avoided others to be increased. The second section basically relates to the horrors of the Western diet and how those virgin palates (yes, think of the Whopper commercials) that are introduced to the Western diet are treated to a list of Western diseases. Last, Pollan gives the reader his solution.

The first two sections are disheartening. Pollan reviews government policies that have lead to the food industries re-invention of food-like products that plague our grocery shelves and then continues

to show how our bodies are not adapted to deal with the highly processed foods that he traces back to the invention of rollers for grinding grain in the 1870’s.

Pollan entreats the reader to stop dissecting foods into a list of “healthy” and “harmful” nutrients, and suggests that focusing on individual nutrients is doing more harm than if we would simple eat whole foods. While he’s convincing, he demonstrates how difficult it is to remove oneself from this type of food analysis as he slips into a discussion of the benefits of omega-3s. And as prepared as I was to not treat this as a diet book, I too was wondering how I could get more omega-3s into my diet. But changing individual nutrients is not what this book is about.

Finally, Pollan’s solution to combat the degeneration of food is very simple, “Eat food. Not too much.

Mostly plants.” Without giving away the climax of the theory, here are some highlights. When considering the definition of food, a general rule would be “Don’t eat anything incapable of rotting.” Also, I was pleased that he strongly recommends the consumption of a glass of wine with dinner (whew, at least I wouldn’t have to feel guilty every evening). I put down the book feeling confident that my New Year’s resolutions wouldn’t be too much affected. I will have to pick up my seed catalogues and carefully plan out my garden, add more time to read the food ingredients at the grocery store, and happily spend more time at the farmer’s market this summer. 2009 is looking like a good year!

People Need Nature - By Dave Van Manen Forty five million Americans believe the oceans are a source of fresh water. Two out of every ten American children are clinically obese, four times the percentage reported in the late 1960s. A veteran biologist with the Colorado Division of Wildlife reported that only 68 applications were recently submitted for 15 wildlife-related positions. He said they used to receive 1000 applications. Only 8 of the 15 positions were filled due to largely unqualified applicants.

These are all symptoms of a societal trend away from spending time in nature. Richard Louv, author of Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature Deficit Disorder, said his intent was not to identify a new medical condition, but to capture in a phrase the costs of our growing alienation from nature.

As director of the Mountain Park Environmental Center, I daily see exactly what Louv is talking about. Our children are truly “plugged in,” with lives dominated by electronic gadgetry and mass media. This results in so many of today’s children being in poor physical shape. Too many have no idea what it’s like to climb a tree or build a dam in a stream. My surveys indicate that the majority of Pueblo’s fifth graders have never gone on a hike and have never been to the mountains prior to participating in one of our programs.

Pueblo County is projected to grow to 200,000 people by the year 2030, a third larger than today. Such growth will bring with it many decisions about the natural world. Should residential and commercial development be allowed everywhere, or should some areas be off-limits? If so, which ones, and why? Should wildlife habitat be considered as our community grows? And water – is there enough?

Such lack of nature experiences impacts both a child’s physical health as well as his attitude towards nature. Although computers and the Internet are great tools, they are a poor substitute for experiencing first-hand the wonders of the natural world. And they are no substitute for the simple yet wise admonition that moms everywhere used to give

Healing Arts Classes & Activities for the Community The Dorcy Cancer Center at St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center will sponsor several classes throughout January and February to support the healing process and invigorate you for the new year.

Each week the center offers Meditation Mondays, an introductory meditation class that will guide you through reflections with guided imagery. Meditation can help decrease stress and assist in improving concentration. The non-religious based class is hosted by the Wet Mountain Sangha every Monday evening from 5:30 p.m to 6:30 p.m. at no charge.

A six-week yoga class is available to help you transcend the stress in your life. Learn a variety of breathing techniques, gentle strength building asanas and inspirational readings. Guided meditation within a peaceful and non-judgmental environment is the format for the group. The goal is to help you focus on your whole body and to use the tools learned in class to balance and enhance your everyday life. The class is from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Fridays, Jan. 7 through Feb. 13. The cost is $25 for all six weeks or $5 per class.

Cutting, tearing and weaving specially treated paper will all be transformed into a beautiful piece of art that can be framed and enjoyed by all. The cost of this class is $10.

in cars today. These batteries are already used to make smaller longer lasting batteries for laptops and cell phones. GM is currently working with Compact Power and Continental Automotive Systems to design a battery large enough to power a car. Design and testing of the battery will take extensive time and manpower. GM plans to produce more cars based off of the Volt’s platform (known as E-Flex). Producing several cars with the same or similar components should drive production costs down in the future.

Tom’s career stared with military service as a nuclear power plant operator onboard the submarine U.S.S. Florida. After his service in the Navy he went on to graduate from the Colorado School of Mines. His passion for solar energy is reflected in his choice of school projects which include a funding proposal for a large solar power plant and a solar powered robotic rover. After graduation, Tom went to work for the country’s largest air medical helicopter company. His projects consist of civilian as well as several military projects.

like carrying capacity are required of voters and leaders alike if decisions that impact nature are to be made wisely. Nature-deficit disorder is a community-wide problem that begins in childhood. Its remedy, what Louv calls a “nature-child reunion,” will require a community-wide effort to take an honest look at our communities’ cultural patterns. If we want parents to say “go outside and play,” then our neighborhoods should provide safe access to natural settings, which is the business of community planners.

“All education is environmental education. By what is included and excluded, emphasized or ignored, students learn that they are a part of or apart from the natural world. Through all education we inculcate ideas of careful stewardship or carelessness.” These words by educator David Orr clearly illustrate that our schools have a vital role in the nature-child reunion. Studies indicate that direct exposure to nature may actually be necessary for healthy childhood development. Attention-Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder, depression, and self-esteem (which is directly tied to choice making around issues such as substance abuse and teen pregnancy) all respond positively to spending time in nature. Armed with such knowledge, health practitioners can encourage outdoor time for their patients.

Systematic efforts to get our children, and the rest of us, to spend time out in nature will be a huge step in the direction away from many health problems and their significant personal, financial and community costs.

And, getting outside will be a huge step in the direction of being an ecologically-literate citizenry. Socrates said that knowledge begins with wonder. What better place to stimulate wonder, knowledge and healthy people than nature.

Sustainable Circle - Colorado Fiber Arts

There’s just something about yarn that appeals to all the senses. The rich textures and vibrant colors. The tactile satisfaction as you wander the aisles of your local yarn shop, picking up skeins of wool and silk. Or just the act of watching a ball of plain, simple cord transform like magic into something that can be worn.

Colorado Fiber Arts has been a tremendous resource for fiber artists throughout the region since 2006. The little shop carries a good selection of basics, but also deals in exotic fiber. Yak, camel, silks and cashmere can all be found at this jewel of a shop, nestled into the historic Broadway Arcade Building.

The store keeps a wide selection of ecofriendly yarns in stock, like bamboo and organic cotton.

Colorado Fiber Arts recently sold to Karen DeQuardo, a lifelong knitter who lives in Beulah. DeQuardo said it was love at first sight when she walked into the shop last fall.

“It was one of those gray, overcast days,

you know?” She said the shop was so cozy and inviting that she just wanted to settle in a spot and knit all day.

“I didn’t want to leave.”

When she found out the shop might be closing, she said she had to make an offer.

“I was just so afraid it would leave Pueblo,” she said.

She said she doesn’t have any big changes planned for the shop, just keeping together what the store’s original owner, Emily Barnard, created.

“I really want to keep up the same quality and format. I just think, why reinvent the wheel?”

Barnard said her own fear of living without a local yarn shop is what convinced her to open the shop in the first place. Colorado Fiber Arts has since become a gathering place for fiber artists to show off their projects, learn new techniques and load up on supplies.

The shop offers classes, from Knitology 101 for beginning knitters to classes on weaving and spinning.
