The Story of Contemporary Art Tony Godfrey Is it really art? What does it mean? Why does it cost so much? The Artistic Renewal (1900–1916) The years leading into the 1900s were the start of an interesting phase in Edvard Munch’s work, dominated by two conditions: a close connection to the era’s leading cultural activities on the continent, and an artistic renewal. These conditions were, of course, related – but there were also other reasons why Munch came to spend so much time abroad during this period, and especially in Germany. In the autumn of 1902, Munch had entered into an intimate but somewhat agonising love affair with Tulla Larsen, a wealthy woman six years his junior. The relationship came to an end with a pistol shot in Åsgårdstrand – nobody was killed, but the incident had a profound effect on the artist. But first, let’s take a brief look at Munch’s growing network and artistic renewal. The fact that Munch was attempting something different in his paintings is evident in his use of brighter colours and stronger luminous effects and brushwork. But his subject matter also changed to include fertility and the harvest, powerful male bodies, stalwart workers, sparkling winter landscapes and the radiant sun. As previously, the subject was still often depicted frontally, in a straightforward manner and with reduced spatial depth. But the soft, curving linear interplay of the 1890s tran-

vulnerable and exposed. In the portrait Woman in Grey, she is portrayed on her way out, no longer just a model but an individual, with her own life and psyche. She stands at the border between being a model and being herself.

ART AND LIFE At Ekely Munch often painted outdoors, and many of the works he created were light, lucid and colourful. The lush garden in particular remains the quintessence of Munch’s unrelenting drive to create, and his undiminished skill. Munch himself referred to his works as his ‘children’, and they now swarmed forth in huge numbers. Often, the immediate surroundings served as the initiator of painterly explorations and analyses of the passing of the seasons. The view from the property was diverse: some green hills towards the west, the fjord to the south, the lights of the city to the north-east, and a small forest of old, knotted elm trees close by. The red servants’ quarters building was often used as a point of focus, painted from various angles, at different times of day, and in varying light. Munch shared this interest in gardens with several other modern artists, such as Claude Monet, who cultivated large gardens in Giverny. The garden was a place where the artist could become immersed in the instruments and possibilities of painting; explore light and the effects of colour, compositional approaches, and the expressive power of each brushstroke. But Munch often combined this with some kind of human presence: people at work, or simply outdoors, and most often women. Traces of people are present even in works where they are not visible. This reminds us of how Munch started out by describing himself as a painter of everyday life. During the period he spent in Kragerø, Munch had started painting scenes of animal husbandry, with horses and dogs being popular models. Two horses, one light and one dark, constitute a striking pair of contrasts in lavish depictions of

Why does Edvard Munch still fascinate us? Similar in spirit and motifs to no. 37 [1908,0616.6] and thus probably dating from the same period, although this drawing cannot be related to The Crossing of St Peter’s from the Vedute di Roma. The drawing has usually been described as a free adaptation of a design by Filippo Juvarra for Scene X of Filippo Amadei’s opera Teodosio il Giovane (published 1711), but the connection is loose at best. The style of the drawing, with its scribbled hatching and powerful ink lines, make it clear that it must date from the 1750s or 1760s. Although the residual influence of Juvarra cannot be discounted, it seems more likely that Piranesi conceived this composition as an independent fantasy, based around the play of curved forms.

The iconoclastic designer Alexander McQueen (1969– 2010) – who tragically took his own life at the height of his global success – reconstituted perceptions of bodily form and beauty through eloquent and theatrical layers of culture. His dark imagination was bolstered by widely admired technical skills of cut and construction, which gave his less extravagant output a refined wearability. McQueen left school at sixteen and took up an apprenticeship in Savile Row with bespoke tailors Anderson & Sheppard and then with Gieves & Hawkes. His next employment was with theatrical costumiers Angels & Bermans, where he was introduced to the historical methods of cut and make. McQueen’s achievements were recognized by numerous awards, including British Designer of the Year in 1996, 1997, 2001 and 2003, and International Designer of the Year from the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 2003. The label is now under the creative direction of Sarah Burton, who was appointed in 2011 to design the wedding dress of Prince William’s bride Catherine Middleton.

Notorious for its ambiguous presentation of ‘tartaned’, dishevelled and violently disrobed models – allegedly as a metaphorical indictment of the English subjugation of Scotland – the ‘Highland Rape’ collection was successfully controversial. With the ‘bumster’ – a designer act of sartorial daring that escalated to a global phenomenon – McQueen exhibited his creative authority.

Although antecedents of McQueen’s low-rise trousers are seen in ranges dating back to 1992, it is only in the context of his S/S 96 collection, ‘The Hunger’, that they take a greater significance. Taking the graphic clarity of exotic plumage in a contained palette of red, black, inky navy, white and silver grey, garments are formed into new constructions with an incisive slash, chop or flash of the designer’s shears. Satin, brocade, lace, leather, metallic tulle and linen are interlinked in a range of outfits – feathered, tufted and occasionally be-tailed with magpie panache or geisha fragility. A skullencasing oval mask in metallic voile resonates with the delicate transparency of devoré feather prints. There is a suggestion of the threat of predation in the dress with a claw-wielding leopard printed in sinister chiaroscuro or from the dresses overlaid with a trapper’s mist net.

Virgin Blue: How one of Virgin’s scrappiest upstarts gained traction against stiff competition.

When Richard suggested launching a budget domestic airline in Australia, he was met with little enthusiasm within Virgin Group. His instinct to push ahead was proved right, however: Virgin Blue became the fastest-growing Virgin company of all time. Fittingly for such a no-frills brand, the idea was pitched to Richard over drinks, with ideas sketched on to beer mats. “No business case, no thesis, just big-ticket thoughts,” recalls Virgin Blue co-founder Brett Godfrey. “From those beer coasters we agreed five points on one page that I had to secure for the investment to occur.” A huge boost came when Ansett Australia – the main competitor to the dominant airline, Qantas, with a third of the market – went bust shortly after 9/11. “We bet the shop by buying every single aircraft we could get our hands on,” Brett reveals. “The market crashed, and we saw a oncein-a-generation opportunity to pick up a new fleet for prices I’d never seen before, and never since.”

To save money, Virgin Blue launched as the world’s first online-only airline. It relied on media coverage rather than advertising and attracted attention however it could. “We emblazoned our phone number and website across the hull of the aircraft,”

Brett explains. After its initial press conference, the cheeky start-up became the lead story on every major Australian news network and took over the front pages the next day too. The name ‘Blue’, at first glance a strange choice for a famously ‘red’ brand, is an in-joke: in Aussie slang, ‘bluey’ means a redhead. Crew were encouraged to have fun, and antics ranged from hiding in overhead lockers to organising races between passengers, passing toilet paper over their heads down the seat rows without breaking it. Instead of having ‘baggage handlers’ hidden behind the scenes, Virgin Blue proudly named them its ‘pit crew’ and gave them bright red uniforms. “Australia had been a graveyard for startup airlines, but the Virgin brand and our cheeky attitude was our ‘shield’ – coupled with a value-based model that resonated with irreverent Australians,” adds Brett. “We didn’t try to compete with the big guys: we created a new market. Within three years we were one of Australia’s most trusted and respected brands.”

A thorough understanding of colour is essential to expert design, and is one of the most important tools in graphic design. There are infinite variations of colours at the designer’s disposal, and endless ways of combining them across many media, from printed inks to screen-based colours, each with their own characteristics. colour has a unique, complex language, and the ability to change its meaning when partnered with other colours. Colour terminology

To understand how to choose or assign colour for a specific purpose, designers must first develop knowledge of how colour works, how colours are classified, and the terms used to describe them. colour is differentiated in three main ways: hue, tone and saturation. ‘hue’ refers to the colour’s generic name – for example, red, yellow or blue. A single hue will have many variations ranging from light (tint) to dark (shade). This is called tone or value. A single hue will also vary according to its saturation or chroma (also known as intensity). saturation ranges from full intensity to low intensity, or from brightness to greyness. colour can also be described by its temperature and movement. hues in the red spectrum appear warmer and closer to the viewer than hues in the blue spectrum, which appear colder and further away. complementary colours, such as red and green, lie opposite each other on the colour wheel, whereas analogous colours, such as green and blue, lie adjacent to each other. The former are associated with contrast; the latter are linked to harmony. certain colours have a profound effect on each other when combined. They can vibrate or blend, appear vibrant when partnered with one colour and muted when placed with another. The more you experiment with colour, the more you will understand how to select and group various hues for meaning.

Almost all of technological progress has happened in the last lifetime or two, especially since the invention of the computer, and the time between someone having an idea and that idea being disseminated around the world has shrunk so much that we have future shock. Lartigue The Boy and the Belle Époque Louise Baring As a little boy of seven or eight, Jacques Henri Lartigue was given his first camera, and soon was developing his own photographs. Born into a prosperous family, from childhood Lartigue acutely observed the social rituals of the upper echelons of society through his photography. The hand-held Kodak camera, first introduced in 1888, granted the young photographer flexibility to capture the fine details of eccentric family members at home, the elaborate social parade in the Bois de Boulogne, on the beach in Normandy and beyond. Classic images of motor cars and high fashion sit alongside previously unpublished photographs from the Lartigue archive. These images of family beau-monde and demi-monde life are not only evidence of a prodigious talent, but also offer an intimate, adolescent perspective of Belle-Époque Paris, the world of Proust, Debussy and the Nabis, before the outbreak of the First World War. Bonnard and Vuillard used the camera as a reference point for painting, while Eugène Atget documented the architecture of the old Paris ahead of its developers; but Lartigue was the first to harness the immediacy of the snapshot, often capturing his subjects mid-gesture as in real life, creating a new visual language for the 20th century.

Nearly three thousand winters after the death of the bear, a band of humans made a clearing in a primitive forest between Creadan Head and Dunmore East in County Waterford. They constructed what is believed to be the oldest settlement in Ireland; thousands of stone knives, scrapers and tiny blades made from chert pebbles have been found at the site. At about this time, similar settlements sprang up at Ballyferriter, near Dingle, County Kerry, and at Mount Sandel, near Coleraine, County Derry. Our knowledge of what Ireland was like during the Mesolithic period remains profoundly vague. These people were shorter than us, and shorter-lived, too, with lifespans perhaps half the length of our own. They may have been dark-skinned and blue-eyed, like England’s ten-thousand-year-old Cheddar Man is thought to have been. They would have spoken their own fully-fledged language, incomprehensible to modern ears. Excavations at Mount Sandel suggest they lived in egg-shaped, dome-roofed structures, constructed of timber posts, saplings, hide, bark, thatch and reeds. Perhaps a dozen people could comfortably fit into each hut; the inhabitants snoozed around a central hearth that afforded them a holy trinity of heat, light and a place to cook. The flint-smith was of pivotal importance, crafting arrowheads, hide scrapers and spears with razor-sharp blades, as well as polished stone picks and axes. Women played a key role in the quest for food. During the summer, these plucky souls foraged for crab apples, lily seeds, berries and protein-rich hazelnuts that could be kept in storage for the leaner months. Taking to the water in dug-out log canoes, they trapped and speared the migrating salmon, sea bass, plaice, flounder and autumnal eel that swam in and around the estuaries and coastline; the fish were smoked or dried on wooden racks just beside their huts. 16 It Starts with a Bear

Deep ruby jewels emerging from forest-green foliage in the autumnal months, rosehips are most commonly harvested from the beautiful dog rose, Rosa canina, often found growing wild and free. Native American tribes wove rosehips into their medicinal repertoire, as did the Europeans in the World War II era, when the hips warded off scurvy with their supercharged vitamin C content. The fresh raw fruit offers a world of antioxidant goodness. Abundant bioflavonoids and Vitamin C enhance immunity and address a Vitamin C deficiency, blurring the line between food and medicine beautifully. Rosehips address the underlying stressors that often contribute to a lowered immune defense, they usher in warmth, and are completely delightful for sore throats, colds and flu. The heart responds well to rosehips; unsurprisingly, as the rose holds strong medicine akin to the heart. The antioxidants within the hips support the cardiovascular system and overall work to reduce systemic chronic inflammation, great for varicose veins and all sorts of venous insufficiency. The hips are gently astringent, helpful in cases of diarrhoea and acting to cool overheated states of the body. Rosehips are often prescribed for arthritic conditions, to prevent further degeneration and offer relief from joint pain, stiffness and aches. The sweet and sour fruits also show promising antiaging and anticancer affects. A floral superfood, fresh rosehips make the most excellent medicinal jam, fortifying immunity through the winter months!

Elderberry elixir I called upon the queen of the elderberry elixir herself, my mentor and friend, the wonderfully wise naturopath Kira Sutherland, to share this winter warmer. Kira has been making this uplifting recipe for years and I am thrilled to share it with you all.

INGREDIENTS

200 g (7 oz) fresh elderberries or 100 g (3.5 oz) dried elderberries 60 g (2 oz) dried rosehips 40 g (1.5 oz) echinacea roots/leaves/flowers 30 g (1 oz) cinnamon chips 15 g (0.5 oz) licorice root 2 litres (2 quarts / 8 cups) apple juice, or 1.5 litres (1.5 quarts / 6 cups) apple juice and 500 ml (1 pint / 2 cups) pomegranate juice (be sure to use sugar-free fruit juices) 300 ml (10 fl oz / 1¼ cups) raw honey EQUIPMENT

Place all of the herbal ingredients into the saucepan, and add the 2 litres (2 quarts / 8 cups) of juice. Mix gently. Bring to the boil over a medium heat, then simmer for around 1 to 1.5 hours, stirring occasionally. Remove from the heat and allow to cool. Strain out the herbs through a fine mesh sieve.

Put the liquid back on the stove and add the raw honey. Stir over very low heat until the honey has melted through (avoid overheating the honey so as to preserve its enzyme-rich properties). Allow the mix to cool completely and decant into sterilised glass bottles or jars. Seal well and store in the fridge for up to a month.

This mix is delicious straight off the spoon! Take 1 tablespoon daily for wellness and increase up to 3 tablespoons daily if immunity is feeling a little depleted.

Henri Cartier-Bresson travelled to China in December 1948 at the request of Life magazine. He stayed for ten months and captured some of the most spectacular moments in the country’s history, photographing Beijing in ‘the last days of the Kuomintang’ and bearing witness to the new regime’s takeover in Shanghai. Then, in 1958, Cartier-Bresson was one of the first Western photographers to go back to China to record the changes that had taken place over the preceding decade. The ‘picture stories’ he sent to Magnum and Life played a key role in Westerners’ understanding of Chinese political events. Many of these images are among the best-known and most significant photographs in Cartier-Bresson’s oeuvre: his empathy with the populace and sense of responsibility as a witness make them an important part of his legacy.
