Getting Around Bangkok’s weather and infernal traffic conditions will determine how you travel around the city, by foot or one of the many forms of public transport that are available. There is no doubt that for the first time visitor Bangkok smacks you in the face and makes you take notice of its organised chaos. You may be overwhelmed by the sheer volume of traffic in this frenetic city where cars, motorcycles, trucks, tuk tuks, taxis, buses and it seems every other form of transport competes for space. But first a little about Thai addresses; to the new-comer it can be difficult working out addresses, a thanon is a street or road, a soi is a street running off a thanon (although some sois are big enough to be called thanons and some are known as both), and a trawk is an alleyway. So Soi 3 Thanon Silom is the third soi to lead off Silom Road, but this soi is more like a wide boulevard and is also known as Soi Convent, Thanon Convent or even Convent Road. This soi can be shortened to Silom Soi 3 and people will know where you want to go.

Travel Passes: Are available for the Skytrain and the metro/ underground/subway. Good value is the Skytrain’s three day pass for under 300 baht this gives unlimited travel for the whole three days. Other options are 10, 15 or 30 trip tickets the cost includes a 40 baht refundable deposit on the ticket but the trips must be made within one month of purchase. Top-up tickets are also available on the metro and Skytrain. Trains: Bangkok has two excellent and modern urban train systems: the Skytrain and its underground sister the metro. Both of them serve the business and entertainment areas of the city and the Skytrain is currently undergoing an extension to the opposite bank of the Chao Phraya River and further along the Sukhumvit line past On Nut. The metro also serves more residential, commercial and industrial areas than the Skytrain. Compared to Western cities both the metro and the Skytrain are very good value for money. There is a system of urban railways run by the State Railways of Thailand but it is unlikely that these will be of much use to many foreigners in Bangkok. But again the fares are remarkably cheap. One of the most relaxing and fun ways of getting about Bangkok is to use either the River Express or canal taxi boats. The River Express boats have a limited reach travelling only between Wat Ratchasingkhon in the south of Bangkok to Nonthaburi in the north. It is a fun but crowded way of travelling the city, the service starts at 6am and finishes at 7.30pm between these hours they are very frequent travelling at ten minute intervals. Some of the boats are express boats that run only during peak hours and so do not stop at each pier, these are easily

distinguished by the orange, red or yellow flags being flown. Again the fare is remarkably cheap starting at 10 baht with a maximum fare for the whole journey of 25 baht. Canal Taxis will zip you around Bangkok’s many canals the trips are quick and the stops are usually under or near to bridges. The fares are also remarkably cheap. The canal taxis are an interesting way to get to see Bangkok and to beat its notorious traffic congestion. Longtail boats are another option although more expensive than the canal taxis they provide a quicker route around Bangkok and Thonburi’s narrower waterways. Buses: Amongst this melee is a wide choice of available transport. One thing to be aware of is that most buses in Bangkok have their destinations written only in Thai but route numbers are prominently displayed. Bus route maps are available to buy at 7-eleven, family mart, Bookazine, Asia Books and many other shops. The first thing you will notice about Bangkok’s buses is that they come in many different colours. This is mainly to indicate whether they are air conditioned or not, many of the buses are also very old. At peak times during the morning and evening rush hours they get very full with standing room often only available. Taxis: To say that taxis in Bangkok are plentiful is an understatement; they whiz around the street in search of customers like busy bees in search of honey. There is just one problem at peak traffic times and when congestion is bad you they are vulnerable to the whims of the traffic flow and the traffic police.

Bangkok is about the only city in Thailand that has an organised taxi system and the flag-down fare has not changed in years it is a very reasonable 35 baht for 2 kilometres. Trips between 2 and 12 kilometre add an extra 4.5 baht per kilometre, when stationary the tariff is 1.25baht per minute. All tolls are paid by the passenger. There is no need to bargain but be sure the meter is running if not insist that it or get out. Be careful of being short changed or the notorious excuse ‘meter not working’. Tuk Tuks: These little three-wheelers are best kept for very short trips, they are open to the elements and best avoided during the day time when buses and trucks are belching toxic fumes and during the rainy season when you are likely to get wet. You have to bargain for the price and they can be as expensive or more so than metered taxis, tuk tuks really should only be used as a novelty and not relied on for longer trips. For a short trip 40 baht is a reasonable price. Motorcycle Taxis: These are guaranteed to speed you through Bangkok’ s congested traffic at any time of day, but they are best left for desperate situations as the ride can sometimes best be described as ‘white-knuckle’. Fares for short trips are about 20 baht. By Rail: The State Railways of Thailand are easily the best way to get around and see the country - train travel in Thailand is comfortable, safe, cheap, environmentally friendly, and unlike flying, it’s a genuine Thai experience that makes the journeys as much part of your trip as the destinations... In fact, Thailand has one of the best metregauge rail systems in the world. Most trains use Bangkok’s main Hualamphong station in the city centre, although trains to Kanchanaburi leave from Bangkok Thonburi station (also known as Bangkok Noi) across the river in the West of the city. However, to ease congestion, State Railways of Thailand intend to move long-distance services out to a new terminal at Bang Sue junction station, 7km North of Hualamphong station, and at some point all long-distance trains will start from there instead of Hualamphong. Suburban and short-distance trains will continue to run from Hualamphong, linking it to Bang Sue. Thai trains have three classes: first, second and third. First class only exists as modern air-conditioned sleepingcars on overnight trains. Second class comes in seat and sleeper versions, in air-conditioned and non-air-con varieties, and is very comfortable especially on sleeper trains and the air-conditioned express railcars. Even third class is surprisingly clean and acceptable by European standards, and is an enjoyable way to travel for many shorter trips. 1st class sleepers These are modern and air-conditioned, with lockable two berth compartments with washbasin. Clean bedding,

244

soap and towels are provided. The toilet at the end of the car even has a shower (cold water, but very welcome). Those passengers who are travelling alone may have to share with another passenger of the same sex unless they to pay for sole occupancy. The berths convert to a sofa for evening & morning use. A very good choice if you want space and privacy, although second class sleepers are perfectly adequate for most people. Second class sleepers Most western visitors are quite happy using second class sleepers, which are comfortable, safe, and great fun. Berths are not in compartments, but are arranged ‘open plan’ along the coach wall either side of a central aisle. During the evening and morning part of the journey, pairs of seats face each other on each side of the aisle. At night, each pair of seats pulls together to form the bottom bunk and an upper bunk folds out from the wall. The attendant will make up your bunk with a proper mattress and fresh clean bedding, and will hook up the curtains which are provided for each bunk to give you privacy. Second class sleepers come in both air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned varieties. The fare for an upper berth is a fraction cheaper, but the upper bunks tend to be narrower. There’s plenty of luggage room. Second class seats - air-conditioned express railcars The express railcar is an excellent option for daytime travel on routes such as Bangkok to Chiang Mai and Bangkok to Hua Hin & Surat Thani. These modern airconditioned railcars have comfortable second class reclining seats. There is a hostess service of light meals and refreshments included in the fare. Relax and enjoy the journey as the scenery rolls by. Second class seats - ordinary trains These are a pleasant and comfortable way to travel for long-distance daytime journeys, although slower than the express railcars. There are both air-conditioned and non-air-con varieties. The advantage of the non-air-con coaches is the open windows and unrestricted views, a breeze wafting in as the train clickety-clacks through the Thai countryside.

Third class seats - ordinary & local trains In spite of its name, third class is a perfectly good option for short trips such as Bangkok to Kanchanaburi or Ayutthaya, as it’s generally clean, not usually crowded outside the commuter peaks, unbelievably cheap, and sitting next to an open window as the train clickety-clacks through the countryside is a very pleasant experience. But choose second class long trips such as Bangkok to Nong Khai or Chiang Mai. Third class may have wooden or padded seats, is normally non-air-con, but air-con third class exists on a few long distance routes. How to buy tickets - at the station Reservations are computerised, and the booking office at any main station can reserve seats or berths for any journey in Thailand. Your ticket will have the train time and your seat or berth number printed on it. Bangkok’s Hualamphong Station has a well-organised reservation office, open daily 08:00-16:00. From the main entrance, walk towards the platforms, and the reservation office is tucked away on the extreme right, more or less level with the entrance to the platforms. There’s a queuing system: when you enter, take a numbered ticket from the machine and wait until your number appears on the display, directing you to a particular reservation counter. The staff are friendly and helpful. How quickly do trains get fully booked? People often ask, ‘how difficult is it to get a reservation if I go to the station on the day of travel?’ Generally, it’s not too difficult to find seats or berths available if you book on the day of travel or perhaps the day before, but Thai trains do get fully booked from time to time, especially at peak holiday periods It is easy to check seat availability by going to www.railway.co.th and selecting ‘seat availability’. Try entering tomorrow’s or the day after date. It will tell you how many seats or berths are still available on specific trains on that date.

Air travel: In the last few years Thailand and some other Asian countries have liberalised their airways allowing low cost, no frills airlines to grow at a rapid pace. Now it is easier and cheaper to fly domestically and internationally using both full service airlines like THAI and Bangkok Airlines and the low cost carriers of which there are many. Bangkok is ideally located as a central air hub giving easy flying access to all parts of the Kingdom and beyond. Few Thai destinations are more than an hour or 90 minutes flying time from Bangkok, and even regional destinations are little more than three hours away. The largest of the no frills airlines and the one with the most destinations is Air Asia serves most of Thailand’ s largest towns and cities from its base in Bangkok; it also has an extensive regional network serving destinations like Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Ho Chi Min City (Saigon), Hanoi, Bali. Like all other low cost carries you have to be an early bird to get the best deals but Air Asia has frequent promotional deals to particular destinations with very low cost seats. Fares are for a one way (single journey) only and a return ticket has to be purchased either at the same time as an outward ticker or they may be purchased at a later date. Nok Air is a subsidiary of THAI International and operates a two class policy, the good news is that the first class is only an extra 500 baht on the standard price so will not break the bank for that little extra comfort. The first class seats are ex-THAI International business class and give more leg and arm room. One-to-Go operates solely within the Kingdom and has an extensive network of routes to the north and south of the country. Tiger Air is a subsidiary of Singapore Airlines and now operates between Bangkok and Chiang Mai and Singapore. One way tickets from Bangkok to Singapore start at under 2000 baht and frequent offers are available. THAI International and Bangkok Airways operate full service flights within Thailand and beyond. Even though their fares are more expensive than the low cost airlines their offer the full service you would expect providing meals, snacks and drinks as part of the service. Suvaranbhumbi Airport: At present both domestic and regional flights use Bangkok’s brand new airport Suvaranbhumbi (pronounced Soo Wa Na Boom). This is a brand-new airport opened only in September 2006 and while it looks very impressive there have been some teething troubles since its opening. But these are being solved and the airport should be in tip-top condition as you read this. Air travel is booming in Asia and a new and larger airport was a great priority for Bangkok and Thailand Suvaranbhumbi gives greater capacity to the increasing number of arrivals and departures and of operators. The airport is world record-braking in two respects: firstly it has the largest and longest passenger terminal and secondly its air traffic control tower at 132.2 metres

245

Long Distance VIP Buses: Perhaps the cheapest way to travel around Thailand is by long distance VIP buses. These buses run an extensive network of routes to all parts of Thailand. The fares are offer good value for money with a typical long distance trip costing about 600 baht one way. The routes often directly connect Bangkok with other regional towns and cities with buses departing for the most popular routes every hour. Long distance VIP buses are often the only way to get to a remote area that is not served by air or rail links. There are three main long distance bus stations in Bangkok Ekamai, Mor Chit. They serve different regions of the country with Ekamai bus station serving the eastern seaboard, Mor Chit the northern part of Thailand.

is the world’s tallest and can handle up to 74 flights an hour. Unlike the old Don Muang airport Suvaranbhumbi has both domestic and international gates in the one terminal. The airport offers all the facilities you would expect of an ultramodern international airport; shopping opportunities galore with bargains to be had in all the duty free shopping outlets. Food is available for all tastes and pockets from MacDonald’s and other fast food outlets to fine cuisine in superb restaurants. In its first phase it has been designed to accommodate 45 million passenger each year, a second phase will increase that number to 120 million passengers. To cope with this number the single terminal is nearly 500 metres long and 11 metres wide with seven concourses. Five of the gates are capable of handling the new Airbus A380 There is a 5000 space car park right outside the terminal with another 1100 spaces at ground level and a long term car park that can hold 4000 cars and 78 buses. The Novotel Airport Hotel is a five star hotel situated in the airport’s vicinity, again offering a full range facilities from small seminar and meeting rooms to full range of MICE services. The hotel has four restaurants and a bar and its all day eating outlet The Square serves a variety of popular Thai and Western cuisine. In addition it has a 20-metre swimming pool that is surrounded by a tropical garden, a fitness centre, spa facilities and beauty salon, shopping arcades and a babysitting service. As the elevated railway link is expected to be completed at the end of 2007 beginning of 2008 access to the airport can only be made by bus, taxi or private. Frequent airport buses leave various points of central Bangkok frequently, and the BMT bus service has routes that link with the airport also. The airport bus costs 150 baht per journey and the scheduled service being cheaper but is a longer journey time. A taxi ride takes between 35 and 45 minutes and the fare from the centre of Bangkok should be in the region of 400 baht. Taking a taxi from the airport involves catching a free shuttle bus to the taxi waiting point about 3 kilometres from the departure lounge. There is a 50 baht surcharge when hiring a taxi from the airport.

246

Car Hire: If you want to drive yourself you will need an international drivers licence; car rental offices are numerous in the city, both local and international car rental companies offer excellent rates and service. They will hire both self drive or chauffeur driven cars. Driving around the country is easy as all the direction signs are written in Thai and English. Driving in Bangkok though is a different matter with the many motor-cycles vying for space discourages many foreigners from driving in this congested city. To hire a care you will need an international drivers licence, passport and your credit card. Check what the insurance covers and if there is an excess to be paid in the event of an accident. Also make sure that the rental charge includes unlimited mileage. Most companies will deliver the car to your hotel or apartment, and will allow you to pick up and leave the car at the airport. Both the English language newspapers, The Bangkok Post and The Nation have copious advertisements for car hire companies. There is plenty of choice so it may be worth your while spending some time shopping around, don’t ignore the local hire companies as they are as reliable and often cheaper than the major international hirers. Thailand drives on the left side of the road. Getting around Bangkok and Thailand has become more convenient, more comfortable and for air travel much more affordable in the last few years. What a golden opportunity to visit Bangkok’s and Thailand’s many fascinating cities and sites.
