SPAS With its centuries old practice of massage and traditional remedies, and its well deserved reputation for excellent service Thailand is a leader in the field of spa treatments Whether you are a spa novice or an experienced devotee there are many choices of spa therapies to be enjoyed here. They range from one or two hour treatments in day and hotel spas, to residential treatments in specialist resort, destination or medical spas that offer a full range of treatments. Of course the prices vary with the establishment too. The Thai spa phenomenon is relatively recent innovation having been introduced by the Oriental Hotel Spa, Banyan Tree Hotel Spa and Chiva-Som International Health Resort; the country’s only destination spa. From these small but quality beginnings and in just a decade or so there has been a rapid growth in the number of spa facilities both in Bangkok and Thailand; so much so that the country now boasts over 200 quality spas.

217

The excellence of Thai spas is reflected in their popularity the UK’s leading travel magazine the Conde Nast Traveller has regularly conducted polls on spas world-wide. Each poll places Thai spas among the best in the world with Hua Hin’s Chiva Som Health Resort being consistently in the first three. Other spas that have maintained their top ranking are the Banyan Tree Hotel spa, the Four Seasons Chiang Mai and the Six Senses Spa. The growth in the Thai spa sector prompted the Ministry of Public Health to cooperate with the leading operators in laying down a set of rules and guidelines that govern the registration of spas and the training of the staff. As well as providing a base for a common standard for all spas that covers such important matters as hygiene, safety, and quality assurance. Many of the spas are now recognised with an ISO certification. The concept of spa therapies has been passed down through the ages and combines ancient healing arts and techniques with modern technology and practices. Thai spas combine modern modes of therapy with the ancient Buddhist beliefs of calmness, tranquility and inner peace that help to form a perfect triangle of mind, body and spiritual harmony. The International Spa Association represents over a 1,000 spa providers world-wide and has identified four categories of spas: Day Spas offer a variety of treatments and therapies on a daily basis. These spas have no residential facilities. Resort or Hotel Spas are to be found in a hotel or the grounds of a resort, these are either owned by the hotel or a specialist spa operator administers the spa. They provide facilities for fitness training, spa therapies and treatments, and often offer specialised healthy cuisine. Medical Spas provide comprehensive wellness and medical care within an environment that combines medical and spa facilities. They provide conventional and complementary therapies and treatments. Destination Spas are those dedicated to providing their clients with a life style improvement programme alongside a health enhancement option. These are administered by highly qualified and experienced spa professionals. Besides the spa service they also offer physical fitness and health and life style education programmes in accommodation that is provided on site. Spa cuisine is an integral part of the experience.

218

While the majority of Thai spas are of the destination type or are located in hotels, the day spa sector is growing rapidly. However, this sector is further differentiated with the day spas appealing more to the local and expatriate population and the longer stay hotel and destination spas are more suited to the holiday-maker or longer stay guests. There are many day spas in and around Bangkok they can be found in the business, commercial, entertainment and tourist districts of Silom, Surrawongse, and Sukhumvit Roads. Every four and five star hotel also has an in-house spa either provided by the hotel itself or managed by reputable international spa chains. But whether the spas are located in hotels, or provided by international chains one thing you can be certain of is that the Thai spa experience is unique. The world-wide fame of Thai spas is justified for the friendliness and hospitality of the staff and warmth of the welcome and environment at all Thai spas is unsurpassed and the sense of service is unequalled any where. Most reputable Thai spas embrace the true spirit and tradition of “holistic healing” and offer a spa menu that features a comprehensive but balanced range of exotic, revitalising ‘feel good’ and ‘look good’ treatments that go beyond the superficial health and beauty services available in the average beauty salon. Holistic spa programmes are specially formulated to restore balance and rejuvenate mind, body and spirit.

The typical Thai spa menu presents an overwhelmingly impressive choice of tempting offerings which include traditional Thai, Swedish, Javanese, Lulur or Sports massage, therapies for jet lag, aromatherapy, reflexology, foot massage, skin care treatments such as facials, mud and body wraps, scrubs, treatments for hair, skin and face, acupressure, herbal steam rooms, and floral baths. While herbal steam baths and massage techniques have evolved from traditional healing methods and herbal remedies, other state-of-the-art options including hydrotherapy and recontouring are also available. Spa therapies and treatments are becoming more and more popular and competition on operators is increasingly intense so many of the bigger operators are producing their own range of spa products for home enjoyment; a development known as ‘Spa at home’. These products are essentially the same as used at the spa itself, using the same ingredients and offering the same benefits of relaxation and well being.

219

But perhaps for both day and short stay spas a combination of Western and Eastern tradition treatments is more popular. The menu here will include Swedish massage, aromatherapy, reflexology, warm herbal applications and the new and emerging warm stone treatments. The modern pace of life, the stresses of work, the hectic tempo of contemporary city living has certainly contributed to the popularity of the spa experience. After all is said and done even the most hardy of us needs to relax and unwind at the end of a stressful week. There is no better place than a Thai spa to reset the fragile triangle between mind and body and spirit. Although massages are considered a traditional part of the spa treatments this is just a small part of the spa experience; there are other treatments available like general body scrubs, facial treatments, ancient massages like the famous Thai Massage and reflexology. All of these are designed to provide a sense of well being, relaxation and peace. Massage has been practiced for many thousands of years and in every continent. It is a holistic therapy that reduces the heart rate, lowers blood pressure, increases blood circulation and lymph flow, relaxes muscles, improves range of motion, and increases endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers. For spa beginners the gentlest introduction to massage is the so-called Swedish massage, the classic western style massage. Swedish massage involves the application of oils or creams to the body using long stroking motions. The technique also employs kneading of individual muscles, the use of friction, tapping and vibration. All this is to stimulate blood flow, while at the same time producing a feeling of relaxation and well being. Swedish massage has a number of off shoots such as aromatherapy, sports and deep tissue massage, all of which are available at hotel and destination spas and at the better day spas. Many of the resort, hotel and destination spas now include ancient healing remedies too; such things as activities that combine mind and body; yoga, tai chi, meditation, stress management and even acupuncture and acupressure. The real test of a spa is the quality of the overall experience and the end results delivered. Was the delicate balance of mind, body and spirit restored? Did the particular spa experience create a sense of well-being? Was there a feeling of gaining a

220

new lease on life? Did the experience promote a feeling of revitalization and re-energising? Most people will be familiar with massage and there is a wide range to choose from. The most familiar to foreigners being the Swedish-type massage, this involves gentle stroking and kneading with soft karate-type chopping to relax and loosen muscles. Aromatherapy is a related technique that uses oils made from plants and flowers; the aroma of which has relaxing and restorative properties. Bergamot, clove, eucalyptus, peppermint, teatree oils, and many others, are used in this type of massage. Very light pressure is used as this allows the oils to do much of the work. Individual oils have exact recuperative effects such as anti-depressant, sleep inducing, anti-infection and anti-inflammation, they also makes you smell good. Thai massage is an ancient technique that followed the spread of Buddhism from India over 2000 years ago. Thai massage uses muscle compression, joint mobilisation and acupressure, a combination that many say is both relaxing and energizing. Thai massage is based on the principles of Yoga and aims to increase flexibility, loosen the joints and improve circulation. But it is not suitable for people with certain medical conditions so it is important that you tell your therapist of any medical problems you may have.

Acupressure a 2000 years old therapy that is based on traditional healing arts. Pressure is applied to particular parts of the body in an effort to channel positive energy to promote muscle relaxation and improve energy flow. The pressure is known to release the bodies own ‘pleasure hormones’ endorphins, these trigger a feeling of well-being and peace. Reflexology is another ancient Asian massage that uses pressure points in the hands and ears, but mainly on the feet. The pressure applied releases energy to promote healing; as each area of the foot has a corresponding organ and pressure on that part will help to engerise the organ. Other spa treatments include lymphatic massage, deep tissue massage, and a new comer on the block: stone massage. Stone massages, is a ‘New Age’ massage that uses the natural powers of polished and heated pebbles that are strategically placed to relax, energise and promote well-being. Mud, sea salt, seaweed, and water from mineral springs can be experienced at many spas.

221

Mud treatment sounds revolting but this is not the stuff that pigs and hippopotamus’s roll in, this mud is refined and usually clay based it is applied to the skin in rubs or wraps or you may be immersed neck to toe in the mud. The clay draws out impurities from the skin and may cause an unusual but not unpleasant sensation.

For men too: There is evidence from India that the ancient spas were the exclusive preserve of men who enjoyed the invigorating yet relaxing environment of the spa treatments then available. Certainly this is the case in the ancient European world, where Greeks and particularly the Roman enjoyed the spas they established all over Europe and the Middle East. This tradition of male spas continued into 18th century Europe, the spas of Germany, France, Italy and Britain became the fashionable places to be seen while receiving the treatments then on offer. What is good for men all those millennia ago must still be good today. Spa treatments are not just the preserve of women, men should experience them too, after all those macho Roman centurions enjoyed a relaxing massage and some aromatherapy after a hard day on the battle ground so why not today’s modern man? There is nothing to fear except feeling good. And yet for some reason many modern men are still scared of spas – or at the very least, sceptical. Somehow, being slathered with essences of seaweed and papaya, scrubbed, polished, steamed, simmered, kneaded and generally treated with kindness offends some men’s sense of masculinity. But this is changing in a recent edition of the business section of The Bangkok Post carried a report that saying that men are now loosing their inhibitions and using spa facilities far more frequently. Indeed Bangkok’s S Medical Spa’s client base is now over 50% men. Still the majority of spa patrons are women, but as can be seen the world is changing and men are again discovering the benefits of spa treatments. Maybe it’s health, maybe it’s vanity, may be it’s the effects of stress but whatever the reason, men are getting over the reservations that for so long have prevented their gaining from the variety of spa treatments on offer. One Bangkok spa that caters for men is the Pirom Spa on Sukhumvit Soi 1. There are special programs for jet lag, sporting injuries, reflexology, spot massage, back and shoulders, tension relief. These are accompanied by a range potions containing of essential oils, seaweeds and clay-based

222

detoxifiers. If you want to order a la carte, there are facials, eye contours, milk baths, hand rejuvenations, in fact more therapies than body parts. Like the Pirom Spa many of the better known and bigger spas have their own signature treatments that may cost a little more but the experience can not be bettered and is certainly worth the little extra outlay. To be papered and cosseted by a spa treatment, be it in a day spa or a resort spa, is a little luxury that every one should experience at least once in this life. There is a clear consensus that while spas also offer “look good” beauty treatments along with feel good” treatments, spas go beyond superficial pampering. Holistic healing is central to the spa concept. So what is the future of Thai spas? Because of the unique combination of the Thai desire to please, to provide excellent value for money, with an attention to detail and a natural aptitude to serve there can be no doubt that the spa experience is here to stay and its future looks bright. Expansion is likely to come from the rise in hotel based spas providing five star service at extremely reasonable prices. And the next logical step for Bangkok’s first-rate international hospitals is to combine traditional medical care with the option of spa therapies with traditional Thai healing techniques. The future looks bright for the Thai spa industry.

Fun with your therapy The S Medical Spa on Wireless Road is a unique medical spa, the only one in Bangkok, but that is not its only fun feature – the staff uniforms are designed to put clients at ease and to raise a smile, even when paying the bill. Nurses wear T-shirts with the legend “Doctor’s Sister”, Pharmacists are “Drug Dealers” and cashiers have the slogan “Cash me if you can”. S Medical Spa occupies a brand new facility in the Phakdi Building, Wireless Road, it claims to be the biggest and most comprehensive medical spa in Asia. Treatments are not carried out in treatment rooms but in fully equipped suites that overlook a really beautiful tropical garden, and this in the very centre of Bangkok.

223

The spa offers a range of therapies that are designed relax and promote healing, one of the novel therapies is aqua acupressure, combining the positive aspects of acupressure with the supportive nature of water. The client is supported by a therapist while being moved and stretched in a large pool, this therapy will promote a meditative state while easing muscle and joint aches and relieving pain.
