Ces propos touchants, énoncés à la première personne par Henri d’Ofterdingen au début du roman éponyme du poète romantique allemand Novalis, résument presque parfaitement la philosophie de Joseph Beuys et la portée fondamentale de son art. Novalis, de son vrai nom Friedrich von Hardenberg (1772 – 1801), figure archétypale du romantisme allemand et inventeur de la mystérieuse fleur bleue, inspirait une profonde admiration à Joseph Beuys et comptait au nombre de ses écrivains préférés avec Goethe et Nietzsche, pour ne rien dire de Rudolf Steiner.

Beuys peut être considéré à bon droit, surtout maintenant, à la lumière du quart de siècle écoulé depuis sa mort en 1986, comme le grand romantique allemand de son époque. C’était un artiste, bien sûr, mais aussi un écrivain et un penseur idéaliste de tout premier ordre dans une Europe totalement meurtrie par les catastrophes des deux guerres mondiales qui ont abouti à la défaite du prétendu IIIe Reich en 1945, alors que Novalis en son temps portait à sa façon la blessure de la Révolution française et du bonapartisme. Beuys n’a pas su éviter de se compromettre dans toute cette destruction des valeurs « civilisées » perpétrée par le pays des poètes et des penseurs.

This touching statement, written in the first person by Heinrich von Ofterdingen at the outset of the eponymous novel by the German Romantic writer Novalis, sums up almost perfectly Joseph Beuys’ philosophy and the fundamental meaning of his art. Novalis – Friedrich von Hardenberg (1772 – 1801), the archetypal German Romantic writer and inventor of the mysterious blue flower, was deeply admired by Beuys and – alongside Goethe, Nietzsche, and not to mention Rudolf Steiner – among his favourite authors. Beuys, especially now, in the light of the more than quarter of a century that has passed since his death in 1986, can arguably be perceived as the great German Romantic figure of his era. He was, of course, an artist, but equally an idealistic writer and thinker of the first order who lived in a Europe – unlike the time of Novalis, who was scarred in his own way by the French Revolution and the rise of Napoleon – totally scarred by the catastrophes of the two World Wars that culminated in the defeat of the so-called German Third Reich in 1945. Beuys could not but help be compromised by the destruction of all those ‘civilised’ values that the land of poets and thinkers had wrought.

L’exposition à la galerie Thaddaeus Ropac a pour pièce maîtresse un ensemble d’éléments sculpturaux qui occupaient une place de choix au beau milieu d’une manifestation internationale intitulée Zeitgeist [« l’esprit du temps »], organisée durant l’été 1982 au MartinGropius-Bau, tout juste réouvert au cœur du vieux Berlin. À ce moment de l’histoire, le bâtiment jouxtait en fait le mur de Berlin où se situait auparavant l’épicentre géographique du réseau d’influence effroyablement criminel de l’élite nationale-socialiste. Beuys était invité à présenter, en contrepoint de cette manifestation dominée par le néo-expressionnisme en plein essor international,

This exhibition has as its centrepiece sculptural elements that featured prominently in the middle of an international art exhibition called Zeitgeist that took place in West Berlin in the summer of 1982 at the then newly reopened Martin Gropius Bau, situated in the heart of old Berlin.

It was, in fact, at that point in history standing at a place adjacent to the Berlin Wall that previously had been the very geographical epicentre of the unspeakably criminal power base of the National Socialist elite. In an exhibition dominated by New Expressionist painting that was gaining international recognition at the time, Joseph Beuys was invited to make a counterpoint installation in the

une installation dans le superbe atrium autour duquel se déploie le majestueux édifice du XIXe siècle qui abritait autrefois les collections d’art décoratif des musées nationaux de Berlin, et dont il ne restait pas grand-chose après l’assaut final contre la capitale en 1945. Ayant assuré avec Christos M. Joachimides le commissariat de l’exposition Zeitgeist, je me rappelle très bien que Beuys a proposé de transporter à Berlin le contenu de son atelier, à commencer par ses outils et ses établis.

Après quoi il a érigé, à peu près au centre de l’atrium, un énorme monticule d’argile évoquant un chantier de construction. L’installation tout entière possédait une très forte dimension théâtrale incorporée sciemment dans sa présentation. Ainsi chargée de sens et de résonances métaphoriques, elle a reçu le titre de Monuments au cerf. Pour cette œuvre d’art totale, qualifiée d’ATELIER D’ARGILE, Beuys a composé un poème elliptique affirmant, en écho à Novalis : « Les monuments au cerf sont des machines à accumuler où les êtres humains et tous les autres esprits se réunissent afin d’œuvrer ensemble et, ce faisant, d’examiner tous les points de vue décisifs nécessaires pour donner la FORME appropriée à la NOTION DE CAPITAL et, avec elle, à la situation du monde.

Ce serait impossible évidemment sans les monuments au cerf. L’argile est une substance de la terre, l’argile et le quartz. Avec la bonne proportion de craie, nous avons le sous-sol sur lequel nous reposons, et d’où nous ramènerons la planète à la vie après la terrible mise à mort2. » Comme tous les jeunes gens de sa génération (il est né en 1921), Beuys s’est laissé entraîner inévitablement dans l’univers du national-socialisme et des jeunesses hitlériennes. Il semble même avoir défilé aux congrès de Nuremberg et s’être engagé dans l’armée allemande pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. C’est là qu’est survenue son heure de vérité légendaire, en mars 1944, lorsque le bombardier de type Stuka qu’il pilotait est tombé sous le feu ennemi en Crimée et qu’il a perdu connaissance, mais s’en est sorti vivant, contrairement à son copilote. Beuys raconte que des Tatars l’ont découvert : « J’ai entendu woda (eau), puis j’ai senti le feutre de leurs tentes et une puissante odeur âcre de fromage, de graisse et de lait caillé. Ils m’ont enduit le corps de graisse pour faciliter la production de chaleur et m’ont enroulé dans du feutre pour m’isoler du froid3. » Cet épisode

magnificent atrium at the core of the grand nineteenthcentury edifice that had previously been the home of the applied arts collections of the Berlin State Museums, which had only just survived damages wrought by the final onslaught on the German capital in 1945. This writer, who together with Christos M. Joachimides, was one of the two organisers of the Zeitgeist exhibition, remembers well how Beuys proposed to move the contents of his studio, including all his tools and work benches, to Berlin.

He then had erected, more or less in the centre of the atrium, a huge clay mound as if from a construction site.

The whole installation had the strongest element of theatre consciously built into its display. Thus it achieved genuine capacity for metaphor and meaning, for which he proposed the title Hirschdenkmäler (Stag Monuments).

For this “Gesamtkunstwerk” (total art-work), described as a CLAY WORKSHOP, he composed an elliptical poetic text in which he wrote, echoing Novalis, that: “The stag monuments are accumulation machines at which human beings and all other spirits meet, in order to work together and in so doing to discuss every decisive point of view necessary for putting the CONCEPT OF CAPITAL and with that the situation of the world into the proper FORM. That cannot of course be done without stag monuments. Clay is a substance of the earth, clay and quartz. With a proper part of chalk we have the subsoil on which we stand and out of which after the terrible making-dead (furchtbaren Vertotungen) we will reawaken the planet to life.1” Like all the young men of his generation – Beuys was born in 1921 – he was inevitably sucked into the world of National Socialism and the Hitler Youth; he seems, indeed, to have marched at the Nuremberg Rallies and ‘volunteered’ for the German military during the Second World War. It was being shot down as a pilot that gave rise to his legendary moment of truth in March 1944 when, according to his own description, more or less poetic, the Stuka dive bomber plane he was flying over the Crimea was shot down, leaving him unconscious but still, unlike his co-pilot, miraculously alive. He claims to have been found

Il y eut aussi une période cruciale dans le sud de l’Italie, qui sema les graines de sa future attirance pour cette région et pour Naples. Comme on aimerait l’interroger pour en savoir un peu plus sur les angoisses de sa jeunesse et sur les illusions qui ont régné à l’époque ! Du reste, nous aurions tous envie de demander à nos parents et à nos grands-parents quelles épreuves ils ont traversées alors, tant il est vrai que ce sont les individus qui donnent vie à l’histoire. Beuys, notoirement hypersensible dès son jeune âge, a dû avoir des réactions complexes face aux atrocités commises autour de lui. En tout cas, il dit avoir récupéré des livres destinés à être brûlés et les avoir rapportés chez lui pour les examiner de près.

Les Monuments au cerf, après l’exposition Zeitgeist, se sont métamorphosés en un environnement sculptural étroitement apparenté, l’Éclair illuminant un cerf, où l’on retrouve beaucoup d’éléments de la configuration précédente, mais assurément pas tous. Le rapport entre les deux œuvres, où le sujet de l’une se matérialise dans un objet connexe, réside dans une transformation induite par un « éclair » que l’artiste a moulé à partir d’une tranche d’argile prélevée à la surface du monticule, donnant le jour à quelque chose de complètement nouveau. Au centre de cette œuvre nouvelle se dresse une immense sculpture en bronze plus ou moins triangulaire qui prend maintenant l’apparence d’une roche volcanique en pleine chute. Elle surmonte des objets qui entouraient le monticule dans l’exposition Zeitgeist et que Beuys appelle ses Lehmlinge ou Urtiere (animaux primitifs). Ces composants délibérément primitifs ont survécu aux dangereuses opérations de fonte en bronze, contrairement au monticule lui-même, et constituent à présent, avec quatre autres éléments sculpturaux, la pièce maîtresse de l’exposition chez Thaddaeus Ropac. Quelques-uns sont cassés, mais la plupart sont restés intacts et portent témoignage d’un moment important de l’histoire de l’art dans l’Allemagne occidentale de l’après-guerre. De fait, ils participent de la relique, comme toutes les œuvres de Beuys. L’appellation Lehmlinge, appliquée à des « animaux » d’argile, fait penser aux lemmings (c’est le même mot en allemand),

insulation to keep the warmth in.”2 This dramatic moment was part of a long sequence of military transfers that Beuys seems to undergone during the Second World War, which took him across much of central Europe (Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Austria), not to mention many of the Russian fronts. There was also a crucial period spent in southern Italy, which sowed the seeds for his later engagement in his art career with Naples and its surroundings. How one would like to question Beuys in more detail about his experiences of anxiety in these early years and the delusions that were part of that time! Just as all of us would like to ask our parents and grandparents about what they went through in this period. After all, it is individuals who make history come alive, and Beuys, who as a youth is documented as an already hypersensitive individual, must have had complex reactions to the atrocities happening around him. He certainly claims to have rescued books destined for burnings and taken them home to study.

Stag Monuments, after the Zeitgeist exhibition, metamorphosed into a related sculptural environment entitled Blitzschlag mit Lichtschein auf Hirsch (Lightning with Searchlight on Stag) and incorporated many, but by no means not all, of the elements of its former manifestation.

The relationship between the two works of art, in which the subject of the former materialises into another related object, is a transformation caused by ‘lightning’ cast by the artist from a slice of the clay mountain’s surface, causing a totally new object. The central object of this new work was, of course, a huge upright, roughly triangular bronze sculpture that now took on the appearance of volcanic rock falling downwards. At the base, were objects that had surrounded the Zeitgeist mound that Beuys christened his Lehmlinge or Urtiere (primitive animals). These deliberately primitive objects, unlike the mound itself, have survived in spite of having gone through the dangerous process of casting and are, together with four other sculptures, the centrepiece of this exhibition. Some are broken, but the majority survive intact and represent a significant moment in the story of art in post-war West Germany. Like all of Beuys’ works they have, indeed, the characteristics of relics.

The word Lehmlinge (clay animals) is also reminiscent of “lemmings” (the same word in German). These are, of

ces petits rongeurs des régions arctiques qui, d’après une croyance répandue, se tuent en grand nombre sur les falaises de glace au cours de leur migration. Chacun des trente-cinq Lehmlinge ressemble à un étron. L’argile recèle des outils de Beuys : marteaux, tournevis, spatules et autres instruments présents dans n’importe quel atelier de sculpteur. Beuys a donné à ses Lehmlinge une apparence volontairement primitive, voire rudimentaire. Beuys, de même que beaucoup d’autres artistes de sa génération, refusait ce qu’il considérait comme les aspects regrettables d’un esthétisme qui lui semblait occuper une place trop importante dans la tradition artistique occidentale, au moins depuis la Renaissance et jusqu’aux nombreuses formes et tendances nouvelles de la peinture, revenue au centre de la scène contemporaine depuis quelques années.

Et ce, alors même que la trajectoire d’une grande partie de l’art du XXe siècle depuis le temps de Picasso se place sous le signe du collage et de l’objet trouvé : on songe à Picasso lui-même, à Duchamp et, bien sûr, à Schwitters.

Beuys aimait beaucoup Schwitters, mais il pensait que « le silence de Marcel Duchamp est surfait ». Beuys poussait à de nouvelles extrémités l’idée du primitif et du collage.

Dans les Monuments au cerf, et en particulier dans les Lehmlinge, l’argile se révèle pleinement à l’origine de toute chose et de toute créativité. Ces créatures d’argile peuvent s’interpréter comme des espèces éteintes qui rejoignent

Wrapped within the clay were Beuys’ tools – hammers, screwdrivers, spatulas and other objects to be found in any sculptor’s workshop. The Lehmlinge are deliberately made to look primitive, even rough. Beuys himself, along with many artists of his generation, rejected what he saw as the more misguided aspects of aestheticism that had, as he saw it, at least since the Renaissance, been too much at the centre of the Western Art tradition, including now those many new forms and styles of painting that for those few years had risen once again to the very centre of the international discussion of contemporary art. This was even though the trajectory of so much of twentieth-century art since the time of Picasso had been characterised by the invention of collage and the found object (Picasso himself, Duchamp and, of course, Schwitters). Beuys was particularly fond of Schwitters, but of Duchamp’s “Silence” he famously felt it had been “Overrated”. Beuys thus was pushing the concept of the primitive and the collage to new extremes. In Hirschdenkmäler and in the Lehmlinge particularly, clay manifested itself as the origin of all things and of all creativity. They can be understood as the extinct animals which gather alongside other animals and humans:

les autres animaux et humains. « Les animaux anéantis ou disparus se réunissent avec les peuples anéantis ou disparus près des machines. Car c’est ce qu’ils font en réalité, même s’ils sont morts, parce qu’ils conduisent les machines, là, au mur de Berlin4. »

“Annihilated or extinct animals meet annihilated or extinct peoples by the machines. For they are in reality, even if they have died out, because they are driving the machines, here at the Berlin Wall.”3

Pour Beuys, les morts et les disparus restent des esprits vivants avec qui la communication existe, tel le fameux lièvre dans Comment expliquer les tableaux à un lièvre mort (1965). Avec toutes ses allusions à la « forme appropriée », ses objets, en l’occurrence les Lehmlinge, recèlent en eux la capacité d’enrichir la terre et de la réénergiser, fût-ce en servant d’engrais. L’argile enveloppe les divers outils de l’atelier de l’artiste de manière à exercer un pouvoir thermique. On sent la douce chaleur dispensée au marteau, au ciseau ou à la spatule, tout imprégnés d’énergies positives et créatives qui les tirent de leur sommeil.

For Beuys, the annihilated and the dead represented spirits that were still alive, with whom communication did occur, just as in the famous case of the dead hare in How to explain pictures to a dead hare (1965). Referring as he does to ‘proper form’, Beuys’ objects, namely the Lehmlinge, have the inherent potential of enriching and renewing energy back to the earth, even as manure. The clay was given warming power in the manner in which it was wrapped around the various tools of the artist’s workshop – we can sense the hammer, the chisel or the spatula, receiving warmth that would imbue them with positive and creative energies awakening them from their sleep.

Beuys a toujours été un penseur. Son répertoire iconographique a constamment tourné autour des métaphores de la création, plus spectaculairement que jamais dans l’environnement Monuments au cerf. Les matériaux les plus élémentaires à portée de sa main lui étaient essentiels et quand il parlait du mur de Berlin, on peut y voir une référence au sable, matériau primitif entre tous, sur lequel la ville est bâtie et qui s’est avéré susceptible de

Beuys was always a thinker. His imagery had always to do with metaphors of creation – never more spectacularly than in the environment Hirschdenkmäler. The most basic of materials that could be picked up anywhere around him were of its essence and when he wrote of the Berlin Wall he was arguably also referring to the sand – that most primitive of materials – on which Berlin famously stood; that, too, was capable of transformation. Clay that

transformation, lui aussi. L’argile fournie par le « sable » local avait la faculté d’acquérir les propriétés du feutre, de la graisse ou de n’importe quel autre matériau potentiellement régénérateur employé par Beuys dans ses sculptures : le suif, la margarine, le beurre, l’huile d’olive et la cire d’abeille. Il lui arrivait fréquemment d’ajouter ou de retrancher des éléments à ses œuvres lorsqu’elles passaient d’un lieu d’exposition à un autre. On en a un bon exemple avec les retouches successives apportées à l’environnement Forces directrices, dont le parcours créatif commence à l’Institute of Contemporary Art de Londres en 1974. Cette œuvre se compose d’une centaine de dessins à la craie sur des ardoises, fruit d’un mois de dialogue permanent avec les visiteurs d’une exposition collective intitulée Art into Society ; Society into Art. Accueillie ensuite à New York, puis à Venise avant de s’arrêter à Berlin après son acquisition par la Nationalgalerie en 1977, elle reçoit chaque fois des ajouts qui en modifient profondément le sens : un lièvre en verre dans un écrin noir, une ligne traversant l’environnement d’est en ouest… Les Monuments au cerf subissent plutôt des soustractions. La montagne se transmue en un éclair nanti de facultés transformatrices par l’électricité. Parmi les éléments des Monuments au cerf supprimés en cours de route, figurait principalement un mât où était suspendu le légendaire boudin noir. De fait, le boudin était devenu un motif cardinal de l’environnement tout entier. À l’époque, Beuys déclarait à ce propos : « Au fond, les plus stupides savent que ce qui est en jeu, c’est la TRANS-FORMATION radicale de TOUT, de la TOTALITÉ…

L’intelligence nécessaire pour fabriquer un BOUDIN, ce n’est rien de plus que l’intelligence du boudin lui-même5. » Autrement dit, ce sont les composants (animaux) qui, placés devant la pensée humaine, ont les ressources voulues pour contribuer à une société meilleure. À côté des éléments qui ont disparu pour une raison ou pour une autre, il y en a d’autres qui sont parvenus jusqu’à nous, notamment le Lit de camp emmitouflé dans de chaudes couvertures de feutre suggérant un dormeur. Sous le lit, un transformateur électrique transmet probablement de l’énergie au personnage endormi. Cette œuvre est actuellement en dépôt à la Tate Modern de Londres. Une autre sculpture anthropomorphe remarquable, conservée aujourd’hui dans une collection particulière à Berlin, semble dater de 1949 – 1951. C’est un torse féminin incomplet, extraordinairement puissant, que Beuys a peut-être exécuté

had been derived from the local “sand” was capable of attaining the properties of felt, fat, or indeed all the other elements with potential to transform and renew life that Beuys used in his various sculptures – tallow, margarine, butter, olive oil and beeswax. It was not uncommon for Beuys to add to or subtract from works of art as they were given public outings in different situations. A good example of this are the adjustments that took place to the environment Richtkräfte (Directive Forces), that commenced its creative journey at London’s ICA in 1974. This work consisted of approximately one hundred chalk drawings on blackboards that were the result of a continuous month-long dialogue with the visiting public in a group exhibition entitled Art into Society; Society into Art. In each of its subsequent stations – New York, Venice and its final resting place as an acquisition by the National Gallery in Berlin in 1977 – new elements were added which changed the nature of its meaning: a glass image of a hare placed in a black box, a line drawn across the environment from east to west... In the case of Stag Monuments there is rather a process of subtraction: mountain is transformed into lightning which, through electricity, achieves a transformative function. Among the elements of Stag Monuments that were lost in transformation were, most importantly, a flag pole from which hung the legendary blood sausage – indeed the sausage became a signal and key element of the entire environment. Commenting on the work at the time, he wrote that, “at heart it’s just the most stupid who know that what is at stake is the radical TRANS-FORMATION OF ALL, OF THE WHOLE... the intelligence needed to make a BLOOD PUDDING – that can only be the intelligence of the blood pudding itself.”4 In other words, it is the elements (animals) themselves that, confronting human thought, have the ability that is necessary to make for a better society. However, beyond those elements that, for whatever reason, disappeared others have survived; among them is the Feldbett, a camp bed wrapped in warming felt blankets suggestive of a sleeping figure. Under the bed is an electrical transformer, presumably transmitting energy into the body. This is now on loan to the Tate Modern in London. Another key figure, now in a Berlin private collection, is a work apparently made by Beuys between 1949 and 1951 – an incomplete female torso of astonishing power possibly made while a student in the studio of German sculptor Ewald Mataré.

Il reste trois œuvres majeures exposées ici pour la première fois depuis 1982. Les deux premières sont des « animaux » qui, encore une fois, répondent aux critères de la « forme appropriée » selon Beuys. Ce qu’il entendait aussi par sa célèbre maxime « chaque homme est un artiste », souvent mal comprise comme il le savait lui-même, c’était que l’art devait impérativement tendre vers une société idéale capable de dépasser les deux idéologies dominantes de l’époque : le capitalisme et le marxisme. Pour Beuys, indépendamment de leur intelligence, les êtres humains, enseignants, balayeurs de rue, peintres ou sculpteurs, avaient tous verrouillé en eux leur créativité innée et leurs possibilités de concrétiser la force et la connaissance de la forme aussi bien à l’intérieur de l’objet qu’à l’intérieur d’eux-mêmes. Il avait d’ailleurs une conception du beau et de l’art pas très éloignée de celle du poète, dramaturge et philosophe allemand Friedrich Schiller. « C’est la disposition esthétique de l’âme qui donne naissance à la liberté », écrit Schiller. Il ajoute : « L’État dynamique peut rendre la société seulement possible en maîtrisant la nature par des forces naturelles ; l’État éthique peut la rendre seulement nécessaire (moralement) en soumettant la volonté individuelle à la volonté générale6. » Selon lui, la communication esthétique est le seul lien qui soude la société. « Loin des arcanes de la science, le goût amène la connaissance au grand jour du sens commun […]. Dans l’État esthétique, le moindre outil (Werkzeug) est un libre citoyen7. » Pour Beuys comme pour Schiller, les outils de travail deviennent les instruments de la liberté. C’est une planche à repasser (appartenant apparemment à la mère de l’artiste) qui a servi à créer le Cerf, composant masculin, et il repose sur des éléments en teck dont la forme, parfois comparée à celle d’un piano, désigne peutêtre les courbes féminines. Le matériau lui-même rappelle la Vierge de 1961 composée de neuf éléments en teck, conservée dans la collection Ströher, et la Vierge au linge mouillé II, de 1985, actuellement au Centre Pompidou8.

Standing on a sculptural metal tripod made of plaster, and now covered in old gauzes, she is as if in the process of becoming, resembling in many ways an Egyptian Amarna princess that in the context of Berlin might almost be imagined as the great Nefertiti herself.

Three major sculptures remain, which are being presented here for the first time in public since 1982. There are firstly two ‘animals’ that, once again for Beuys, represent ‘proper form’. What he meant also by his famous statement, which he himself knew was largely misunderstood, namely that “Every man is an artist”, was essentially his overriding imperative for art to reach towards an ideal society that might transcend the two prevailing ideologies of his time: capitalism and Marxism. For Beuys, individuals, however intelligent, whether indeed teachers, street sweepers, or even painters and sculptors, had locked up within themselves inherent creativity and the potential to realise the power and knowledge of form, within the object and him or herself. His was indeed a concept of beauty and art not unrelated to that of the German poet, playwright and philosopher Friedrich Schiller. For Schiller “it is only the aesthetic disposition of the soul that gives birth to liberty”5, and “the dynamic state can only make society simple by subsuming nature through nature. The moral i.e. ethical state only becomes morally necessary when submitting the will of the individual to the general will.” Furthermore, for Schiller, it is aesthetic communication alone that unites society:6 “Taste leads our knowledge from the mysteries of science into the open expanse of common sense… In the æsthetic state the most slavish tool (Werkzeug) is a free citizen.”7 The tools of working for both Schiller and Beuys become the instruments of freedom; the Stag here is made up of an ironing board – the male element (which apparently belonged to the artist’s mother), and the elements on which it stands are made of teak wood, but have been compared to the form of a piano – which possibly stand for the rounded female form. The teak is reminiscent of the sculpture Virgin (1961) consisting of teak wood in nine parts in the Ströher collection,8 as well as the Jungfrau (Virgin) wood sculpture of 1985, now in the Pompidou Centre. As Schiller writes in his last letter: “The beautiful reconciles the contrast of different natures in its simplest and purest expression. It also reconciles the eternal contrast of the two sexes, in the whole complex framework of society,

Schiller remarque dans sa dernière lettre : « De même que la beauté résout le conflit des tendances naturelles dans le cas le plus simple et le plus clair, celui de l’éternelle opposition des sexes, elle le résout également (ou du moins elle tend à le résoudre) dans les complications de l’organisme social, et, sur le modèle de la libre association qu’elle a nouée entre la force masculine et la douceur féminine, elle aspire à réconcilier dans le monde moral tout ce qui est douceur avec tout ce qui est violence9. » Quand Schiller a écrit ces lignes, le premier romantisme allemand était à son zénith. Le Cerf, sans doute à la fois masculin et féminin, évoque bien des paradoxes situés à la lisière de la vie et de la mort dans les cultures germaniques tant païenne que chrétienne. Prenez par exemple la légende de saint Eustache, martyr romain, ou celle de saint Hubert, évêque de Maastricht et de Liège, à qui l’on attribue la même vision d’un cerf portant entre ses bois un crucifix, symbole suprême de vie après la mort. Le cerf apparaît dans les périodes de détresse et de danger. Il est associé aussi aux vertus de conciliation, à la chaleur et la fécondité de la vie, et il est doté d’un pouvoir d’éveil spirituel. Le cerf mort ou blessé dans les œuvres de Beuys signale les conséquences d’une violation et d’une incompréhension.

On peut discuter la question de savoir si le cerf ou les autres animaux sont morts ou vivants, dans l’installation initiale conçue pour l’exposition Zeitgeist et dans la version en bronze constituant l’Éclair illuminant un cerf. Les deux possibilités restent envisageables à coup sûr. Si Beuys a décidé par la suite de transposer l’original en ébène non pas dans le bronze, mais dans l’aluminium poli brillant, c’est peut-être pour indiquer que l’éclair a bel et bien touché le cerf et l’a illuminé, en provoquant sa renaissance mystique.

La deuxième sculpture d’animal, une Chèvre, est plus terre à terre. Par comparaison avec l’énigmatique Cerf, elle a tout d’une brave bête. L’essence de la chèvre s’incarne, pour Beuys, dans la grande pioche – dont la lame figure la tête et le manche représente le dos – posée sur une brouette à trois roues qu’il n’est pas interdit d’assimiler au sol de la planète, en mouvement perpétuel quoique imperceptible. Il y a un petit morceau d’argile dans la brouette. Ces deux composants de la sculpture, que l’on peut présumer masculin et féminin, sont liés par une relation pas très différente de celle que l’on discerne dans le Cerf. La tête-lame porte le cachet de la FIU, l’Université

or at all events it seeks to do so; and, taking as its model the free alliance it has knit between manly strength and womanly gentleness, it strives to place in harmony, in the moral world, all the elements of gentleness and of violence.9” Schiller, of course, wrote at the early high noon of German Romanticism. The stag – both male and, in a certain sense, female – evokes many paradoxes that exist on the borders of life and death both within much earlier Germanic Pagan and Christian cultures. Consider, for example, the stories of the Roman Saint Eustache, or that of Saint Hubertus – a saint of the Low Countries, both of whom had visions of a stag with a crucifix – the ultimate symbol of life after death – between its antlers. The stag appears in times of distress and danger; it brings also a healing element, the warm positive element of life, and is endowed with spiritual powers and insights. When the stag appears dead or wounded in Beuys’ work it is the result of violation and incomprehension. Whether the stag and, indeed, all the other animals are dead or alive, in the original Berlin installation, or in the cast version that makes up Lightning with Stag in its Glare, is a matter for debate. Surely they can be made to stand for both states. That Beuys chose later to cast the black ebony original, not in bronze, but in gleaming aluminium seems to indicate that it has indeed been struck by lightning, suggesting illumination and a mystical rebirth of the stag itself.

In contrast, the other animal sculpture, Ziege [Goat], is more down to earth: compared to the mysterious stag, it is a working beast. The essence of the goat for Beuys is placed in the large pickaxe – the pick itself standing for the head, the stem for the back of the body – on a threewheeled iron cart that arguably might be imagined as representing the substrata of the perpetual if imperceptibly moving earth planet on which it exists. A small piece of clay is on the cart; the two elements, arguably also masculine and feminine, have a relationship not dissimilar to that which one can sense within Stag. On the axe-head appears a stamp of the FIU – the Free International University founded by Beuys in 1973 with the German author Heinrich Böll. Goat can be seen to represent the archetypal worker: “jemand der hier gearbeitet hat.”10 He is perhaps the ideal student who, through an engagement with the FIU,

internationale libre que Beuys a fondée en 1973 avec le prix Nobel de littérature Heinrich Böll. On peut voir dans la Chèvre la figure même de l’ouvrier : « Jemand der hier gearbeitet hat » (« quelqu’un qui a travaillé ici »). C’est peut-être l’étudiante type qui, inscrite à la FIU, y dévoilera son potentiel créatif en refusant la compétition sauvage et le désir forcené de réussite.

Parmi les sculptures parvenues jusqu’à nous et exposées à la galerie Thaddaeus Ropac, la plus ambiguë de toutes est peut-être l’étrange objet cubique qui était placé à côté du Torse féminin au Martin-Gropius-Bau et destiné à être coulé dans le bronze comme la Chèvre. De même que la Femme, cet objet baptisé Boothia Felix reposait sur une sellette à trois pieds réglable en hauteur. C’est un cube de terre, consolidé par des tessons de terre cuite et des racines de romarin, supportant une boussole. Le nom aux consonances étonnamment archaïques (sur le mode de la Sybilla delphica), sûrement voulues par Beuys, renvoie, non sans une pointe d’humour, à la péninsule de Boothia Felix qui marque l’extrémité nord du continent américain, à l’intérieur du cercle Arctique. L’explorateur écossais John Ross accompagné de son neveu James Clark Ross découvrit cette langue de terre au début du XIXe siècle lors d’une deuxième expédition à la recherche du passage Nord-Ouest, financée par le distillateur de gin Felix Booth.

L’équipage, parti en 1829 mais bloqué par les glaces, rentra seulement en 1833, alors que tout le monde le croyait disparu. Entre-temps, le neveu James avait entrepris une randonnée à traîneau (très beuysienne !) qui lui avait permis d’atteindre, le 1er juin 1831, le pôle Nord magnétique, ce point où une aiguille aimantée suspendue à l’horizontale pointe directement vers le bas. Après maintes péripéties et des rencontres avec des tribus inuit inconnues avec qui ils ont réussi à nouer des liens d’amitié, les explorateurs missionnés par l’Empire britannique rentrèrent au pays où ils furent largement fêtés. Ils présentèrent un splendide diorama dans les jardins de Vauxhall devant un public captivé. Il se pourrait que Beuys ait eu connaissance de cette formidable aventure en 1939, en lisant la traduction allemande du livre de l’explorateur danois Knud Rasmussen sur la découverte de l’Arctique, parue cette année-là sous le titre Heldenbuch der Arktis. Rasmussen y décrit avec force détails poétiques la quête du grand Nord mystérieux et quasi désert menée depuis l’Antiquité grecque. Ces

Perhaps the most ambiguous of the surviving sculptures presented here, which like Goat was to be cast in bronze, is the mysterious box-shaped object that was placed in the Gropius Bau close to the female Torso. Like her, this shape was on top of a sculptural metal tripod capable of height adjustment. It consists of a cubic piece of earth held together with terracotta shards and rosemary roots surmounted by a compass and christened Boothia Felix.

Though at first strangely archaic sounding (echoing a title like Pythia Sibylla) intentionally surely on the part of Beuys, the name even slightly humorously in fact refers to Boothia Felix, the most northern peninsula of America within the Arctic Circle, and discovered by the early nineteenth century Scottish explorer John Ross and his nephew James. James’ second expedition to find the North West passage was financed by one Felix Booth, a British gin manufacturing heir. They were, indeed, at the time of their long voyage (which lasted from 1829 – 33) even presumed lost. The nephew James went in 1831 on his own independent sledge expedition (very Beuysian!) in which, on 1 June 1831, he succeeded in identifying the North magnetic pole – that point at which a magnetic needle allowed to rotate about a horizontal will point straight downwards.

After many adventures and encountering various unknown Inuit tribes, which they managed to befriend, the imperial explorers returned to Britain much fêted and held a show with an extensive panorama that took place in front of an excited public in London’s Vauxhall Gardens. Possibly Beuys read about this extraordinary adventure in 1939, when a book about Arctic exploration was published in Germany.

The book by Knud Rasmussen, himself a famous Danish Arctic explorer, entitled Heldenbuch der Arktis (Hero Book of the Arctics), describes in poetic and graphic detail the spirit of inquiry dating back to the time of the ancient Greeks for the mysterious and virtually uninhabited north.

These northerly climes were to play a fundamental role in Beuys’ mythologies in which the felt coat, fat, sledges and above all glaciers, featured most prominently. The Boothia Felix peninsula demonstrates that even in the frozen North, indeed at the point of the north magnetic pole, there is scope for plant life in the soil beneath glaciers. Perhaps there is again a ‘masculine’ element to Boothia Felix.

La péninsule Boothia Felix démontre que sur les terres gelées du Nord, et même jusqu’au pôle magnétique, la vie végétale reste possible sous la couverture de glace. Il y a peut-être, là encore, une dimension « masculine » dans Boothia Felix. Rasmussen cite en épigraphe de son livre un discours d’un autre héros de l’exploration arctique, Fridtjof Nansen (1861 – 1930) qui participa à la fondation de la Société des nations, mais se fourvoya ensuite, hélas, du côté des idéologies totalitaires nordiques : « Pendant des années nous devions rester passifs et immobiles alors qu’une sève virile et ardente bouillonnait en nous ! Ah ! cette dérive est bien la plus pénible école de patience qui puisse être imposée à l’homme10. » La sculpture cubique, placée tout près des rondeurs du Torse féminin dans l’exposition Zeitgeist, représentait sûrement l’élément viril. Beuys opposait le chaud au froid, mais il cherchait aussi à se servir de son vocabulaire plastique et mental éminemment personnel pour faire ressortir la différence des sexes. Il fut indéniablement l’un des artistes du féminin les plus inventifs du XXe siècle, non seulement dans ses créations sculpturales, mais plus encore dans la somme infinie des dessins et aquarelles qui englobent ses idées de sculptures, et tous ceux dont la charge érotico-esthétique atteste son immense talent de dessinateur. Il doit exister à proprement parler des centaines de ces feuilles extraordinaires qui, sur un certain plan, ne souffrent la comparaison qu’avec Rodin, ou avec Klimt, et partagent avec les esquisses de ces maîtres d’une époque antérieure un mélange de force et de tendre délicatesse qui semble presque dénoter une certaine crainte. Si Beuys a dessiné des femmes, actrices, danseuses et sorcières dans toutes les attitudes et situations possibles (parfois enceintes), généralement nues, il s’est souvent représenté lui-même en femme.

On pourrait aller jusqu’à supposer que ces dessins sont tous des autoportraits à des degrés divers. Beuys s’est aussi représenté en cygne, en reine des abeilles, en cerfsorcière, en oiseau ou en déesse chimique11. À côté de ces dessins de femmes ou quelquefois d’hommes, il y a des milliers d’œuvres graphiques exécutées sur toutes

Just as he pitted the warm against the cold, Beuys, too, was interested in using his own idiosyncratic visual and mental vocabulary to bring out the differences between the sexes.

He was without doubt one of the most inventive artists of the female form in the twentieth century, not only in many sculptural manifestations, but very specifically in drawings and watercolours that in their endless totality encompass ideas for sculptures, as well as those aesthetically and erotically charged, demonstrating intensely powerful draftsmanship. There must be literally hundreds of these powerful drawings that at one level can only be compared to those of Rodin, or of Klimt, and share with these two masters of an earlier age a combination of strength and faint delicacy that seems almost to project a sense of fear. While depicting women in every possible stance and attitude (sometimes pregnant) usually naked, as an actress, as a dancer, as a witch, Beuys frequently drew himself as a woman and one might even go as far as to suggest that all these drawings are to a degree self-depictions. He also presents himself as a swan, a queen bee, a stag witch, a bird, or a chemical goddess (see accompanying catalogue to touring exhibition Joseph Beuys Drawings, published by the V&A in 1983). Beyond these drawings of women and sometimes men also, are literally thousands of other graphic works on every sort of paper and other woven or manufactured found materials of many kinds, including torn packaging, also the public drawings that take the form of blackboards – a medium that he made very much his own. For Beuys, furthermore, each of these thousands of drawings represents potential sculpture – be it a Monument to Auschwitz (1958) or indeed many drawings that are suggestive of the Stag Monuments and other sculptures and actions often taking the form of quasi-musical scores

Pour Beuys, chacun de ces dessins contenait en germe une sculpture, depuis le Monument à Auschwitz (1958) jusqu’aux multiples préfigurations des Monuments au cerf ou autres environnements et actions souvent ébauchés sous la forme de « partitions » pseudo-musicales, de manifestes politiques ou simplement de listes de gens et d’idées, auxquels s’ajoutent les centaines d’œuvres graphiques qu’il a rassemblées dans son Bloc secret pour une personne secrète en Irlande (allusion à James Joyce), qui représentent des formations géologiques, des plantes, des animaux et des êtres humains. Dans le discours qu’il a prononcé pour l’inauguration de l’exposition « Zeichnungen 1946 – 1971 » à Krefeld, en 1974, Beuys explique la finalité de ses dessins : « J’essaie de poser les principes qui prendront forme plus tard. C’est pour cette raison, je pense, que ces agencements de lignes ont pu susciter un grand intérêt, alors que certains se réduisent en réalité à de simples traits, et que l’on pourrait même les qualifier de dessins primaires. Je crois en effet, ou plutôt j’ai de plus en plus le sentiment (la croyance n’a rien à faire ici) que ces choses peuvent utilement stimuler les débats et les recherches, notamment en ce qui concerne l’évolution des faits culturels, le présent de la culture, son avenir et le passage de ce présent à cet avenir. Il s’agit d’une nouvelle conception de l’économie, ni plus, ni moins12. » Le présent, pour Beuys, c’est déjà le passé. Il n’est question que de l’avenir. Il y a chez lui une part de prophétie inévitable et l’homme et l’artiste, dans toute leur complexité, restent incroyablement actuels. La notion de périphérie géographique le séduisait beaucoup. Il se sentait proche des marginaux, auxquels il s’identifiait par son expérience de saltimbanque dans un cirque ambulant. Les îles britanniques, en particulier l’Irlande et les archipels écossais l’attiraient fortement. Il s’y est rendu souvent après avoir donné le concert Celtic (Kinloch Rannoch), symphonie écossaise à l’université d’Édimbourg en 1970. Assez contradictoirement, Beuys avait aussi une prédilection pour Naples et l’Italie du Sud, où il était allé en mission pendant la guerre, et qu’il a redécouvertes en compagnie du grand marchand napolitain Lucio Amelio.

(Partituren), political manifestos, even just lists of persons or ideas, but also earlier drawings such as chosen for the famous Secret Block for a Secret Person in Ireland (a reference to James Joyce) representations of geological formations, plants and animals, as well as humans. In a speech by Beuys at the opening of an exhibition of Drawings in 1946 – 71 in Krefeld that in his drawings an: “attempt is being made to form principles for future embodiment. And, I believe that this is also the reason why these admittedly in part simple strokes, some might even say that they are primitive drawings, this arrangement of lines has been able to awaken such a great deal of interest: because I believe, or I experience more and more (belief has no place here) that these things would suitably serve to stimulate discussion and enquiry, especially with regard to the future shape of everything cultural, the cultural present, the cultural future, and the transition of the cultural present into the cultural future; and this is to be comprehended as nothing other than a new comprehension of economics.”12 The present, of course, for Beuys is already the past; the future is what it is all about. There is inevitably something inherently prophetic about Joseph Beuys and in all his complexity he remains an extraordinarily relevant figure, and not only as an artist. Beuys was strongly drawn to the concept of the geographical periphery – also in terms of persons, he felt close to outsiders and as a clown, and one-time circus performer, he was one himself. The islands of Britain and especially Ireland and Scotland had a strong attraction for him. He came often after his first visit to Edinburgh for the performance of Celtic: Scottish Symphony in 1971. Beuys also felt strongly about southern Italy, which he visited as a soldier, but later rediscovered in the company of the great Italian art dealer and promoter Lucio Amelio, who apparently introduced him to Andy Warhol. It was for Amelio that Beuys was earlier to do his arguably most Warholian image that took the form of his famous poster-edition: La Rivoluzione Siamo Noi (We are the revolution) – an etiquette that he was to add to various other artworks. The photograph on which the work is based was taken on the island of Capri – itself a place full of mystical and revolutionary overtones. This life-sized portrait poster of the artist striding out towards its viewer once again proclaiming that it is only through art that genuine revolution can be achieved. But there is

C’est par l’entremise d’Amelio, apparemment, que Beuys a connu Andy Warhol, et c’est pour Amelio qu’il a créé son multiple sans doute le plus warholien : l’affiche La rivoluzione siamo noi (La révolution, c’est nous), dont le slogan allait se répéter sur plusieurs autres œuvres.

La photographie utilisée pour tirer cette sérigraphie a été prise à Capri, île ô combien chargée de mystique révolutionnaire. C’est un portrait grandeur nature de l’artiste qui avance d’un pas décidé vers le spectateur pour proclamer encore une fois qu’une révolution authentique ne peut s’accomplir que par l’art. Il y a quelque chose dans cette image qui rappelle les portraits d’Elvis Presley peints par Warhol dans les année 1960. Presley est en outre l’une des personnalités américaines, avec Jackson Pollock, pour lesquelles Beuys a exprimé une certaine admiration ironique lors d’un dialogue avec le public à la Cooper Union de New York, à l’occasion de sa rétrospective au Guggenheim Museum en 1979 – 1980. Il a toujours eu un sens de l’humour assez joyeux, et son rire était terriblement contagieux. Une autre région italienne comptait beaucoup pour lui, car c’est à Bolognano, le village des Abruzzes où habitait Lucrezia De Domizio, qu’il a mis en œuvre son projet de Défense de la nature, dans la logique du « débat permanent » instauré à l’Université internationale libre, grâce au soutien de cette grande mécène, également protectrice de l’Arte povera. Là, au beau milieu du parc naturel des Abruzzes,

also something that reminds the viewer of Warhol’s 1960s portraits of Elvis Presley – a person in any case for whom Joseph Beuys, in one public discussion held later at the Cooper Union in New York at the time of his Guggenheim exhibition, had expressed a certain ironic admiration alongside the figure of Jackson Pollock, when asked which Americans he truly admired. Beuys was always capable of expressing a sense of humour and light-heartedness, and the sound of his laughter was infectious to all in his company. Another significant place in Italy for Joseph Beuys was in the Abruzzi mountains to the east of Rome, an area that had a classic history of banditry and in the past had been part of the kingdom of Naples. There, in a small village called Bolognano, at the home of Lucrezia De Domizio, an active art patron and impresario, who had also supported the world of Arte Povera, she engaged Beuys to set up a complex artwork, partly based on his increasing involvement in what he had described as “permanent discussion” at the Free International University, that was entitled Difesa della Natura (in Defence of Nature).

Here, in the middle of what had become one of Europe’s nature parks, and as a counterpoint to his more famous 7,000 Oak Trees that had been Beuys’ project for the Kassel Documenta 1982, there was to be a plantation called Paradise, intended to cultivate and protect 7,000 endangered species of trees. Both projects, out of which other similarly named artworks arose, are typical of

Beuys devait installer une Plantation Paradis destinée à la culture et la protection de sept mille variétés d’arbres menacées de disparition, en contrepoint des Sept mille chênes qu’il avait prévu de planter à la Documenta de Cassel en 1982. Défense de la nature, de même que Sept mille chênes, a entraîné dans son sillage toute une série d’œuvres regroupées sous le même titre. Ces deux projets de Beuys, joignant l’idéal à la pratique de manière caractéristique, se situent dans une période où l’artiste s’était engagé aux côtés du parti allemand des Verts afin d’élargir au maximum le champ de l’art. L’Université internationale libre, surtout active en Allemagne et en Italie, s’est transportée de temps à autre à Belfast et à Édimbourg. L’identification avec Dante signifie peut-être qu’il délivre un message fondamentalement optimiste, disant que le bonheur et le contentement sont à la portée de l’humanité grâce aux énergies positives. Mais elle n’y parviendra pas dans le système économique et politique

Beuys in their combination of the ideal and the practical at a moment when the artist was attempting, through his involvement with the Green Party in Germany, to move as far as possible outside the sphere of art. The Free University operated largely in Germany and in Italy, occasionally locating itself in Northern Ireland (Belfast) and in Scotland (Edinburgh). The humour, though, never left him as he was to write on a blackboard identifying his person with the figure of Dante, in a seemingly invented quote, in a lecture-demonstration with blackboards that took place in Gelsenkirchen in the Ruhr in Germany: “L’arte c’è quando malgrado si ride.”13 Beuys incorporated a sense of laughter even in his most serious actions and he identified with Dante and his Divine Comedy – the word comedy, of course, implies a good ending rather than in the modern humoristic sense (paradise after tribulation).

This identification with Dante is perhaps understandable in the sense of a message that is fundamentally optimistic, and that humankind, with the help of positive energies, has the possibility to achieve happiness and contentment.

However, this cannot happen under the current economic and political system. If the positive outcome was an essential aspect of Dante’s outlook and religious beliefs in his time, in the twentieth century, largely because of so-called ‘advances’ in economics, the social sciences and technology and even the arts themselves, demanded transformation to new purposes. Can we therefore argue

actuel. Si la fin heureuse est un aspect essentiel du propos de Dante, nourri des convictions religieuses de son époque, au XXe siècle, la sociologie, la technologie et même les arts doivent se transformer pour répondre à des exigences nouvelles, engendrées notamment par ce que d’aucuns appellent les « progrès » de l’économie. Serait-il possible, alors, d’affirmer que Beuys s’était assigné une mission premièrement réaliste, deuxièmement utile et, pour finir, esthétiquement convaincante ? On lui a souvent reproché d’avoir poursuivi une démarche sans grand intérêt en fin de compte. Par-delà la force indéniable de sa personnalité que très peu contestent, à l’instar des grands acteurs et chanteurs, c’est-à-dire des artistes du spectacle, il n’a pas laissé grand-chose hormis des souvenirs et quelques reliques.

Pourtant, il existe une énorme tradition des reliques dans bien des systèmes de croyance. Elles occupaient une grande place dans la chrétienté médiévale, du temps où les objets associés au Christ ou aux milliers de saints, revêtus en soi d’un prestige esthétique, étaient exposés dans des vitrines devant les autels des églises et parfois portés en procession dans des reliquaires finement ouvragés. Le dernier environnement somptueux de Beuys, son Palais royal de 1985 conservé aujourd’hui à la Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen de Düsseldorf se compose de sept plaques en cuivre doré accrochées aux murs autour de deux

Beuys’ mission was first, realistic, second, useful, and finally, aesthetically satisfying? Many have claimed that his project ultimately had little value. Above all, beyond the undeniable force of his personality that few gainsay, as with a great actor or singer i.e. a performing artist, nothing much except memory remains alongside a few relics.

However, there is a huge tradition of relics in many systems of belief. Relics played a huge role in the Christian Middle Ages, when objects that were associated with the body or the life of Christ as well as thousands of Saints, not only acquired an aesthetic aura themselves, but were often housed in vitrines displayed under altars in churches or sometimes held aloft in front of the people, hidden within exquisitely designed reliquaries. Beuys’ last splendid environment Palazzo Regale, currently housed in the North Rhine-Westphalian art collection in Düsseldorf, consists of seven gilded copper plates set around on the wall and two vitrines containing precious and exotic relics of Beuys’ earlier actions, including his most special and extravagant shamanistic white lynx fur coat, which he wore in 1969 for his famous action in Frankfurt, Iphigenie/Titus Andronicus. The environment was first presented in the palatial Baroque museum of Capodimonte in Naples just four weeks before the artist’s death. All the various elements contained within the two vitrines will not be enumerated here; suffice it to say that

vitrines renfermant quelques précieuses reliques exotiques de ses actions, dont l’extravagant manteau de lynx blanc chamanique spécialement endossé pour l’action Titus Andronicus / Iphigénie au festival de théâtre Experimenta 3 de Francfort, en 1969. Beuys a présenté cette œuvre tout juste quatre semaines avant sa mort dans le musée aménagé à l’intérieur de l’ancien palais royal baroque de Capodimonte à Naples. Ce n’est pas le lieu ici d’énumérer les divers éléments contenus dans les deux vitrines. Disons simplement que l’ensemble constitue un récapitulatif global, en parallèle aux Monuments au cerf, où l’artiste dresse sa sépulture avec toute la solennité d’un pharaon ou, à tout le moins, d’un philosophe-roi. Il y a quelque chose d’essentiellement platonicien dans la démarche et la philosophie de Beuys, quelque chose qui mériterait un examen approfondi au regard du parcours personnel de l’artiste. À l’instar de Platon dans La République, il accorde une extrême importance à la question primordiale de la forme et il établit un rapport analogique avec l’idée, comme à la fin du Livre VI, où Platon analyse la relation entre la forme et les différents degrés de réalité de l’idée. Le célèbre dialogue du Livre X au sujet des formes uniques du lit et de la table et de leurs trois modes d’existence évoque deux objets beuysiens bien en vue dans les Monuments au cerf et dans la Défense de la nature exposée ici. (Fig. 3, 4) Dans un autre passage célèbre de La République, au Livre V, Platon prédit : « Les cités ne seront au bout de leurs peines

it stands as a great summation, very much in counterpoint to the Hirschdenkmäler, in which the artist is burying himself, with all the solemnity of a great pharaoh or, at the very least, as the Philosopher-King. Indeed, there is something essentially Platonic about Beuysian philosophy and practice, something yet surely to be investigated more deeply in the context of the artist’s personal history. Like Plato in his Republic, he makes much of the essential issue of form, and he uses it in analogous ways, as in the end of the sixth Dialogue when Plato relates the importance of form to ideas and the ways in which different degrees of essential reality relate to form. The famous discussion in the tenth Dialogue about the table and the bed (two Beuysian objects much visible in Stag Monuments, and in this exhibition also the piece Difesa della Natura) and their three essences of existence, together with the equally famous moment in the Republic, in Dialogue five, requesting the ideal state, asks that “until philosophers are kings... cities will never have rest from their evils”.

(Figs. 3, 4). Asked to define a philosopher, Plato describes him as someone who “has a taste for every sort of knowledge and who is curious to learn and is never satisfied”.

And this is the distinction which I draw between the sight-loving, art-loving, practical class and those of whom I am speaking, and who are alone worthy of the name of philosophers. The lovers of sounds and sights, I replied, are, as I conceive, fond of fine tones and colours and forms

que le jour où les philosophes seront rois. » Qu’est-ce qu’un philosophe selon lui ? « Celui qui consent volontiers à goûter à tout savoir, qui se porte gaiement vers l’étude et qui est insatiable. » De plus, Platon établit une distinction entre ceux que « l’on est en droit de nommer philosophes » et ceux que son interlocuteur appelle « amateurs de spectacles et amateurs d’art, et doués pour agir […] qui reconnaissent l’existence de belles choses, mais ne reconnaissent pas l’existence de la beauté elle-même. » Platon procède par oppositions binaires. Beuys, en homme moderne qui a lu Nietzsche, perçoit mieux les nuances et les ambiguïtés, et cette sensibilité sous-tend la poésie de son art. Pour autant, compte tenu de son attrait pour le primitif et l’élémentaire, il ne renonce jamais à son désir de forme tout platonicien. Ce désir de forme va de pair avec le désir de connaissance au sens le plus large et le plus universel.

D’où la tendance totalitaire que certains ont discernée dans les œuvres de Beuys, et plus particulièrement dans son comportement chamanique à l’égard du public. Pourtant, le monde beuysien, soucieux de créativité utilisable par tous pour sortir de la caverne de Platon où l’on ne voit que les ombres de la vérité, ce monde-là est fondamentalement un espace de liberté démocratique où tous les hommes sont des artistes grâce à la transmission du savoir. Que les antiplatoniciens et les antihégéliens se rassurent.

Les arts plastiques ont déjà eu de nombreux maîtres dont la compréhension pénétrante de l’humanité, de l’amour et de la nature a donné le jour à des images extraordinaires au sein de la tradition culturelle occidentale. Cependant, il n’est sûrement pas faux de dire que trois artistes seulement, depuis l’ère de l’individualisme inaugurée à la Renaissance, ont tenté d’atteindre à un savoir universel au sens faustien classique du terme et créé un ensemble d’œuvres dont l’inachèvement manifeste est compensé par une foi prégnante dans la nature infinie de la quête de l’humanité, qui trouve finalement son expression la plus éloquente dans le dessin. Deux de ces hommes étaient des néoplatoniciens de la Renaissance : Léonard de Vinci (1452 – 1519) au sud des Alpes, et Albrecht Dürer (1471 – 1526) en Allemagne.

Tous deux ont connu la gloire de leur vivant, en pratiquant la création d’images traditionnelle (portraits, sujets religieux). Mais l’un et l’autre ont dépassé, et d’aucuns diraient peut-être perdu de vue, leur talent initial en poursuivant une quête philosophique profonde qui les

As a modern man Beuys, who read Nietzsche, is more aware of the relative and the ambiguous, and this informs the poetry of his art. Nonetheless, in his tendency towards the primitive and the essential he never abandons the Platonic will to form. This will to form is always allied with the will to knowledge in the widest and most universal sense. Some have sensed, therefore, a totalitarian tendency in the work of Beuys, particularly within his shamanistic relationship to his audience. However, in his concern for creativity, in which every member of society can participate, and can emerge from the Platonic cave where truth is mainly perceived through shadows, as a citizen of a democratic world in which every man is an artist, and through a definition of creativity based on knowledge, the Beuysian world is essentially a place where an open and free society can prevail. The anti-Platonists and anti-Hegelians can rest!

There have been many great visual artists whose penetrating knowledge of humanity, love and nature has given rise to extraordinary images within the Western cultural tradition. However, it can surely be argued that only three artists, since the age of individuality set in during the Renaissance, have ever strived towards universal knowledge in the classic Faustian sense and created a body of work characterised by obvious incompleteness balanced with a pregnant belief in the bottomless nature of human enquiry – ultimately best expressed through drawing. Two of these men were neo-Platonists of the Renaissance: one from south of the Alps, Leonardo da Vinci (1452 – 1519), and Albrecht Dürer in Germany (1471 – 1526). Both were visual artists who achieved great fame in their lifetime, as practitioners of traditional image-making (portraiture, religious subjects). But both were driven, and some might argue diverted, from their essential talent through possessing a deep sense of philosophical inquiry that led them to write extensively and to channel their artistic talents into the realm of the facts and the mysteries of nature. Leonardo diverted his attention from commissions into examining the physiology of the human body as far as was possible for any man of his time, and indeed beyond. He was interested too in

Léonard de Vinci s’est détourné des commandes afin de scruter la physiologie du corps humain autant qu’il était possible à l’époque, et même encore plus. Il s’intéressait de même aux plantes et aux animaux, et cherchait à représenter les phénomènes naturels comme nul ne l’avait fait avant lui. Dürer aussi, dans sa pratique obsessionnelle du dessin, s’est écarté de ses fonctions principales d’artiste, pour explorer les mathématiques, la perspective et les proportions idéales, dont il énonce les principes dans des traités philosophique et des études de plantes et d’animaux. À l’intar de Léonard de Vinci, Albrecht Dürer, inlassable observateur de la nature, a exécuté des dessins qui ne pouvaient être que des études à usage personnel. On songe au Lièvre, à La Grande touffe d’herbe et à l’aquarelle, beuysienne avant la lettre, du Déluge (vision en rêve) de 1525. (Fig. 1, 2, 6) Ni Léonard de Vinci, ni Dürer, ne travaillaient pour leurs mécènes quand ils exécutaient ces œuvres graphiques extraordinaires. Léonard de Vinci comptait publier ses dessins d’anatomie dans des ouvrages destinés à l’instruction des étudiants en médecine et des apprentis artistes. (Fig. 5) Il n’a pas réalisé son intention, en raison des circonstances, mais aussi, à n’en pas douter, à cause de ses propres incertitudes. Quand on voit la quantité de dessins de Dürer et de Léonard de Vinci qui sont parvenus jusqu’à nous et quand on imagine combien ont sûrement disparu sous les ravages du temps, un lien s’impose avec le projet singulier de Beuys et sa quête éternelle. Beuys non plus ne semble pas avoir achevé son entreprise : une vie n’aurait pas suffi à tout embrasser, encore que l’esprit de totalité subsiste dans ses dessins et façonne sa réflexion permamente. Il n’en a pas moins accompli des chefs-d’œuvre aussi grandioses que les Monuments au cerf, même s’ils ne représentent qu’une fraction de ceux qu’il a conçus et dessinés. La figure contemporaine de Beuys, à ce moment de l’histoire si près de notre époque, reste ancrée dans les systèmes de valeurs de l’Antiquité gréco-romaine, de la Renaissance et du romantisme. Il a trouvé des stratégies permettant de réactiver et réactualiser ces valeurs à la faveur d’un réexamen de leurs principes les plus essentiels. Il a laissé un témoignage absolument considérable dans les œuvres fragiles conservées à ce jour, ajouté à celui des nombreux personnages qui l’ont accompagné concrètement dans

plants and animals to the same degree, as well as wanting to depict natural phenomena in a way that had never been done before. Dürer, too, through obsessive drawing, turned away from his essential profession as an artist in order to investigate principles of mathematics, perspectives and ideal proportions, which expressed themselves in philosophical treatises, and in studies of botany and of different animals. Like Leonardo, Dürer was an obsessive observer of nature and made drawings that could only have been meant as studies for himself, for private use.

One thinks of the famous Hare, the Large tuft of grass, and the great ‘Beuysian drawing’ of the Dream Vision of a Storm that he executed in 1525 (Figs. 1, 2, 6). Neither Leonardo nor Dürer, in these extraordinary sheets of drawings, were ever working for patrons in the normal sense. Leonardo intended his anatomical drawings for publication to enlighten students of medicine and of art (Fig. 5); however, he never realised his intention, partly through circumstance but equally, surely, on account of psychological uncertainty. When we consider how many drawings by Dürer and Leonardo survive and how many more, thanks to the ravages of time, must surely be lost, we can connect both these great artists most certainly to the unique project of Beuys in his own spirit of endless inquiry. His project, too, seems somehow incomplete – a single life was not enough to encompass everything, even if the spirit of totality remains encapsulated in drawings as giving form and expression to his permanent thinking. Nonetheless, monumental masterpieces of art were achieved such as Hirschdenkmäler, even if only a fraction of those that had been imagined and drawn.

We may surely connect Beuys as a contemporary figure, at this point in history near to our own time, to Ancient Classical, Renaissance and Romantic values. Beuys found strategies for making them all alive and meaningful for our own time by re-examining their most basic principles.

The evidence of Joseph Beuys is considerable enough through his surviving fragile work and the evidence too of the many who accompanied him on his explorations in the field (among them Caroline Tisdall, Heiner Bastian, Johannes Stüttgen, and there are others) but the full significance of Joseph Beuys as an artist has barely begun to be investigated. In a world that is now more than ever searching for new solutions for basic social and economic problems, maybe some sense of new ways forward

Dans un monde plus que jamais à la recherche de solutions neuves pour des problèmes sociaux et économiques fondamentaux, il y aurait peut-être une voie nouvelle à découvrir en considérant plus attentivement les formes les plus élémentaires, le besoin de la chaleur procurée par la margarine, et l’effet régénérateur de l’argile enroulée autour des outils de l’atelier, tous ces germes d’une renaissance sociale réunis autour des Monuments au cerf, qui naissent d’une méditation sur la signification des Lehmlinge.
