The

in her own humble words

have an undying love for mother Zambia, so being a part of this Magazine is nothing short of a miracle from God. Not in a million years did I see myself having such a big contribution towards a publication. It is the realisation of knowing that the people we come across, on a daily basis all have a story to tell. Where they come from, what they have been through and what they have achieved. But not many get the opportunity to tell their story or have someone tell it for them, and I see this with the people of Zambia, so many people and so few voices. How does a country so rich and vibrant in culture be so silent I wondered? As I pondered on this, I continued meeting new people, individuals who quite frankly left me gobsmacked; the immense talent they possess, the ambitious ones who without anything are very hopeful and are willing to put in the hours where needed to succeed, I remain in awe of the people who strive for a better life even when all odds are against them. Being a part of a magazine for the people of Zambia that will give an insight on several aspects of Zambian life around the world, so that not only Zambians can enjoy but the world over is exciting. The purpose of The Global Zambian Magazine, is in the heartfelt story of Paul

Ethel Gondwe A personal approach Banda and his plight on HIV and AIDS, for techys who love gadgets, the fashionistas, the world traveller who loves exploring new things, the business individual who takes joy out of solving the cross word puzzle, regardless of what you do, your culture and background, The Global Zambian Magazine will have something for you. One might say how is that content any different from the rest of the lifestyle magazines? TGZ gives you an insight into the many aspects of Zambia and it’s people. We explore the lives of Zambian lifestyle, business and entertainment from within Zambia and the diaspora, something that is rarely showcased in the world media. An exhilarating and educational experience for me; the showcasing of the many aspects of Zambian life and other factors around the world that connect with the readers, weather you are Zambian or not; it truly is a Zed movement and we would like you to move up with us, so ‘Let’s Explore.’

It’s a Zed Movement As the years have gone by, Zambia has certainly gone through leaps and bounds. She is in her 5th presidency, won the AFCON for the 1st time in 2012 and has become the sought after travel and investment destination in recent years.

F

rom football, to music to safaris, there is no longer a corner in Zambia that you will look at and not be fascinated by. Zambia’s development has undoubtedly not gone unnoticed, and the people of Zambia around the world are realising their worth not only to themselves and their country, but to the rest of the world. Like it’s unscathed beauty, the emerging businesses and talented individuals are coming through and the world is having a rare opportunity to see more of what Zambian’s have to offer.

A

s part of the continued efforts to market Zambia as the investment destination of choice. President Sata said: “Zambia shares borders with eight countries and has free trade arrangements with 15 Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries, which is a market worth over US$40 billion. It is also a member of COMESA (Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa) with 19 members and therefore offers you a market for your goods and services, extending well beyond its 752,000 square kilometres of land,”

5

years ago, you would rarely come across a University Student let alone a teenager in Zambia that is willing to put themselves out there, weather it be for work experience, or to establish their own business. Today the level of pro activity in individuals is inspiring. You can now find various young individuals that have gone the extra mile of establishing their own business. They are more focused towards their career goals and most are sure of what they would like to accomplish in their lives. This has encouraged large corporations and organisation to sponsor and invest in the youth and small and medium enterprises. The “Zed” movement has certainly been set in motion, and exciting times ahead are expected for Zambia, it’s people and businesses.

There is renewed political commitment to promote reforms, abundance of natural resources and investor friendly environment and many other reasons that have sustained this growth.

The Zambia Development Agency (ZDA), the entity responsible for promoting investment and trade competitiveness in the country, is very proud to be associated with this growth, which stands at an average 6.7% with strong foreign direct investment inflows into the country

This impressive increase in investments in the first quarter of 2013 can be directly attributed to increased investor

ZDA headquarters Zambia confidence resulting from, among other factors, Government’s continued commitment towards efforts directed at reducing the cost of doing business in the country, which have led to improvements in the country’s business environment, through the streamlining of business licencing procedures and improvements in various other administrative processes relating to business establishments. Other factors are Government’s continued efforts to market the country’s investment opportunities, through the ZDA collaborating with other government line ministries and agencies and increased awareness of investment opportunities available in Zambia through investment promotion missions undertaken by different stakeholders to different regions emphasising Zambia as a preferred investment destination in various sectors of the economy. Mr Chipwende adds, “It is our hope that the new magazine will partner with the ZDA in promoting investment opportunities, joint venture partnerships, project promotion and create a platform to discuss business in general and bridge the information gap that will help build better businesses and lifestyles.”

New book highlights need to broaden Zambia’s manufacturing base Moderator Muna Hantuba (left) and author Professor John Sutton at the launch of An Enterprise map of Zambia

Zambia could be well on its way to middle income status if it can integrate itself into the global economy by broadening its industrial base and encouraging more medium-sized manufacturing businesses.

That is the message from a new book launched this week entitled An Enterprise Map of Zambia, published by the International Growth Centre, a policy research institute co-ordinated by the London School of Economics and Oxford University in the U.K.. “A qualitative change is needed over the next ten years to broaden the industrial base and bring the country to middle income status,” said Professor John Sutton, who authored the book with local consultant Gillian Langmead. Zambia’s manufacturing base has doubled in the last decade, and the country’s economy is among

10 THE GLOBAL ZAMBIAN

the most rapidly growing in Sub-Saharan Africa. If that rate of growth is sustained for another decade then Zambia will achieve middle income status. But in order for that to be achieved, new advances in the structure of the economy will be required, and in particular the range of industrial activity undertaken will need to be broadened, said Prof. Sutton at a pre-launch presentation of the book to officials at the Ministry of Commerce Trade and Industry (MCTI). “Understanding what is needed to maintain this growth is crucial to the formulation of good policies. And this in turn

May/June 2013

requires a deep understanding of Zambia’s current industrial capabilities,” explained Prof. Sutton, whose book provides sector overviews, profiles 50 of Zambia’s leading manufacturing firms and identifies problems and challenges for policymakers, business and potential foreign investors. “Countries that have made the advance into middle ground manufacturing have faced major challenges in regard to quality standards. The most powerful driver of this advance is appropriate foreign direct investment (FDI), which involves companies operating in new industrial activities and bringing new capabilities, and creating new jobs,” said Prof. Sutton. He praised the work of the Zambia Development Agency (ZDA) and emphasised the need for expansion of domestic companies into new areas of activities, as well as maintenance of a good business climate for all firms, whether domestic or foreign. Of particular importance was the integration of local companies into the supply chains of multinational operators, and he also suggested that the contribution of the trading sector could be strengthened. “This is a turning point for Zambia’s economy, and getting the right policies and rules, and ensuring these policies and rules are implemented and enforced, is crucial to the country’s future,” concluded Prof. Sutton. An Enterprise Map of Zambia by John Sutton and Gillian Langmead is published by the International Growth Centre and is available from the IGC Lusaka office at the CSO Annex Building, Nationalist Road, PO Box 50062, Lusaka. Emirates presents Zambia’s first Skywards Platinum Membership ( A b o ve) E m i ra t e s B o e i n g 7 7 7

Emirates Skywards, the airline’s award-winning frequent flyer programme, has recognised the first Skywards member from Zambia to achieve Platinum status.

Platinum is a new membership tier which offers a range of benefits to reward Emirates’ most loyal customers. Platinum members receive exclusive benefits usually reserved for First Class passengers, including First Class check-in, baggage delivery and access to the First Class lounges in Dubai with a guest. They can continue to use all Emirates Lounges around the world, also with a guest, and they receive 20kgs of additional baggage, regardless of their class of travel. With the Gold ‘Partner’ card, family members can enjoy Gold privileges even when travelling separately. Platinum members are guaranteed an Economy Class or Business Class commercial seat at Flex fares and receive access to an Economy Class or Business Class ‘Last Seat’ Flex reward. To qualify for Platinum status, members need to earn 150,000 or more tier Miles within a rolling 12-13 month period. Khalid Hassan, Country Manager for Zambia, presented the Platinum membership card to Shankar Krishnan Iyer, a Lusaka-based businessman, who has earned more than 150,000 tier Miles in the past year. Mr Shankar, Group Chief Executive Officer of Varun Beverages Africa, often takes advantage of Emirates’ daily flights from Lusaka and its extensive global network of 132 destinations, travelling mainly on business between Zambia, Morocco, Mozambique and India. “Mr Shankar is one of our most loyal customers in Zambia and, as a Platinum member, he will now receive a higher level of recognition and additional

rewards every time he flies with Emirates,” said Mr Hassan. “Emirates Skywards is about rewarding our loyal customers and enhancing their travel experiences.” Asked why he flies with Emirates, Mr Shankar, who often redeems his Miles to upgrade from Business Class to First Class, said: “It’s the best airline, the best service and best hospitality - everything is excellent. Punctuality is good and the aircraft is always clean and neat and they take care of passengers very well.” It is free to join Emirates Skywards and members receive benefits every time they fly. There are four membership tiers – Blue, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Benefits for Skywards members include travel and lifestyle rewards, priority check-in, lounge access, extra baggage allowance and bonus Miles, depending on the membership tier. Members earn Skywards Miles when they fly on Emirates and partner airlines and through a wide range of leisure and lifestyle partners. Skywards Miles can be redeemed for a range of rewards such as flights on Emirates and other partner airlines including easyJet, TAP, JetBlue and Alaska Airlines, and for flight upgrades, hotel accommodation, excursions with Arabian Adventures, car rentals and shopping on The Emirates High Street. Emirates Skywards members can now redeem their Miles for events and experiences such as tickets to football matches played by Emirates’ sponsored teams, PSG, Real Madrid, Arsenal and Hamburg SV. Members can also choose to donate their Miles to a range of charity partners including The Emirates Airline Foundation, Sightsavers International, Dubai Cares, Friends of Cancer Patients and CARE International. The daily Emirates flight from Lusaka and Harare to Dubai is operated by a Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, offering 354 seats in a three-class configuration with eight luxurious First Class suites, 42 seats in Business Class and generous space for 304 passengers in Economy Class.

Shopping adventure:

A little spree at Arcades Mall

Ever have that feeling of frustration for buying an item that you no longer like, or not completing your shopping list because the queues where just too much? If you have been there, done that and worn the T-shirt, TGZ have some handy tips on how to have a stress free shopping spree Early shopping makes for a happy shopper

When it comes to shopping sprees, there is one rule of thumb. Start early! Nothing beats an early start when shopping for various reasons; there is less congestion, also known as human traffic. Shelves and displays have been freshly organised making browsing for what you want easier, parking space if you are driving has plenty of slots, not

12

THE GLOBAL ZAMBIAN

over someone’s shoulder or rushing to grab the item someone else is also eyeing.

Look around

Take a break

You have had your early start, so where is the rush? Take your time, browse around, and try things out. With the wide range of stores at Arcades such as Hazida Ezone, to Ndanji Fashions, you are likely to find the same or similar items in some shops, so this is your chance to make price comparisons and look for those bargains that you wouldn’t normally find if you were in a hurry. You have all the time and space to riffle through as many items as you need without the struggle of having to peer

If your feet are feeling a little weary, take a break. With lovely bistros like La-Mimosa or Mint Cafe, you do not need to wait for noon, remember noon time restaurants and cafes are busy. The luxury of starting a shopping spree early is that you can take an early break, and then a follow up after the lunch hour rush is over, meaning you are always ahead of the shopping pack.

May/June 2013

Finish late By the end of the day, you would have bought items you really do like, than impulse

buying because it is “the last one” and “what if I don’t find it next time?” Is no longer a factor. You have had the time to think about it, stew over it and decide if it is really what you need or want. So after a stress free shopping spree, treat yourself to an evening visit to the cinema to wrap up the day. Tip: purchase your ticket earlier in the day when you are still browsing so that you can reserve the best seat(s). With the movie of your choice to end the day, that would be your relaxed and successful shopping spree done, and you can go home with a smile on your face.

to mention the quiet and tranquillity you get when a mall is not yet busy.

LIFESTYLE

FRIENDS &FAMILY TIME

With the technology era taking over most things, spending quality time with family and friends has become a thing of the past, with texting and instant messaging taking up the task of communicating with family and friends. Less families spend time together and do not take the time to get know each other better; there might be a mastercard for all the phone bills or credit top ups to send texts, but for quality time with your loved ones, that time is priceless. Places like Arcades mall offer the whole family an opportunity to spend time together whilst enjoying yourself. There is something for everyone, games, children’s shops, boutiques, hairdressers, restaurants suitable for families or the single ladies or gents catching up with friends.

A FAMILY THAT SHOPS TOGETHER STAYS TOGETHER Shopping at a mall makes for a great opportunity to spend time with your family and friends. That all important piece of news you needed to tell but do not know how? Go shopping, find common ground that will help you break the news. Parents with children, teenagers in particular, speak to them in a language they understand by using an environment they would enjoy being in. We all know that a mall is a teenager’s favourite hang out spot. If you do not have any news to tell and simply want to know more about your child, take them to Planet Books find out what they like to read, or find a movie at Ster-Kinekor cinema you will both enjoy watching. Couples take time to discuss your different tastes in things through browsing around the mall, have a lovely meal at Mikes Kitchen or Arabian Nights. You will not even need to try hard to find out what their favourite type of shoe, or meal is as shopping together provokes natural conversations/ opinions on items you are looking at or admiring making conversations a lot more fluid and giving you more to talk about. You can view the mall as an adventure land without the adrenaline rush, for all ages and for the whole family, where you get to have fun and bond with your loved ones. “I started Tribal Textiles more than 20 years ago now, in the “Munyamadzi” area - a game management area between the two National Parks. The textiles started as a “hobby” as something to do out of the small Safari camp I was living in. Having an artistic background, I experimented with various techniques and dyes, with limited resources, and Tribal Textiles was slowly born. “Said Gillie Lightfoot, Director & Owner of Tribal Textiles “As the business grew so did the workforce and I was able to start handing over some of the drawing and painting to a select few. Moses Musa, now the Workshop Manager, and I have worked side by side from the beginning. With little or no formal educational but for his years of experience Moses now, 20 years on, leads our workforce of over 100 Zambians. Some artists draw the designs directly on the fabric (a highly skilled technique taking years to perfect) whilst many others paint, sew or are somehow involved in the lengthy process of producing one of these painted pieces of fabric.”

When you look at the quality and selection that Tribal Textiles have, you would automatically assume that the fabrics are manufactured in a large factory in the City, but you couldn’t be more wrong. Tribal Textiles are actually based in Mfuwe, South Luangwa. A clear indication to where the inspiration for their designs come from. Each of their pieces are hand drawn and painted by locals using a rich palette of hand-mixed colours. This acts as a great employment anchor in an area where employment is rather scarce. The collection is vast, ranging from t-shirts, bags, accessories, table and bed linen, cushion covers, wall-hangings, and a kids’ range. If you are not in Zambia do not fret as Tribal Textiles stocks in over 20 countries worldwide.

ARTS & CRAFTS

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT Their main objective of creating unforgettable and exquisite textiles whilst working in harmony with nature and benefit the local community, is an admirable one that adds to the beauty of the finished product. Their location in Mfuwe provides employment opportunities for the local residents, which is very rare within that region. Further community benefits have gone towards being co-founders of the local community school, Malimba, which currently educates over 160 children.

FIRE IN BLOCK (TRIBAL ART) (TRADITIONAL) LADIES AND WARRIORS Fire in Block is part of the Tribal Art which is an exclusive MASSAI range of freehand-drawn designs. BUSINESS & TECHNOLOGY

SAMSUNG: INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY SAMSUNG: INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY

It’s something that many have predicted but nobody thought would happen anytime soon. According to IDC, sales of smartphones have surpassed that of feature phones in the first quarter. Samsung is leading the race, with Apple, LG, Huawei and ZTE in the top 5. As well as making it’s mark in the top 5 of smart phones, Samsung seem to have stepped their production into high gear.

W

ith the pending release of the Youm, the phone that will literally bend over backwards for ease of use; Samsung have outdone themselves by taking us years ahead with this new innovation. Now if you are not a technophobe, this will mean nothing to you. However the functionality of samsung technology is probably what has gotten the world talking about them. Today you can practically fill your entire house with Samsung technology products from your kitchen appliances, your sound system, TV, Computers and all the way to your mobile phone. It appears that Samsung has also become the corporate world’s choice of brand as there hardly ever seems to be a hotel, conference centre, school and other buildings and establishments that do not use a samsung television for their entertainment display. ApSamsung Flexible screen Youm proximately one in every 4 person, have a piece of technology that is a Samsung brand, weather it be a smart phone, computer, tablet, TV etc. So what is it that is so fascinating about Samsung, it is safe to say that most people are not always so bothered about a gadgets “tech specs” when purchasing it, so if we are 3D LED Smart TV to go with Samsung being so popular because of it’s brilliant technical specifications, we would be lying to our selves, as most consumers mostly look the physical appearance and the standard apps to access, their emails, facebook and twitter easily. This is my take on why I think makes Samsung products so popular. Most Samsung products have ease of use, with mobile phones having easy integration with not only your computer, but your television (Samsung brand) as well. With the Samsung smart TV, you are literally taken into a whole new world of home entertainment as the Samsung TVs let you chat, surf and share from the comfort of your sofa, you can keep in touch with friends and family with the Facebook and Twitter applications and its AllShare capability lets you connect to plenty of other compatible devices, for easier integration and communication. If that was not exciting enough, Samsung launched a series 9 all in one PC (AIO) in January of last year. The most unique feature in Series 9 AIO is the support for 3D. We have seen several AIOs with 3D panels from Sony and HP, but the Series 9 seems to be the first 27”. Samsung’s Series 9 AIO serves well as a space-saving workstation for the home office with its Series 9 All In One PC attractive design and powerful CPU. However, its Blu-ray drive, TV tuner, 3D capability and media remote make it equally suited as a small-screened entertainment centre. After the invention of the smart phone nobody expected the smart TV, let alone the All In One PC; now Samsung brings us the Smart camera. This has to be said, if there was a catwalk exhibition for cameras, the Samsung galaxy camera would be the one chosen to close the show, yes; it is that gorgeous! Let us take a closer look at this camera to which might I add can slightly be mistaken for a phone at first glance. This is basically a good quality camera with a beautiful interface, it acts like an Android smartphone, but features a 16.3-megapixel Samsung Galaxy camera THE GLOBAL ZAMBIAN

camera with telescopic lens and a host of photo features. Features like the voice control are a great novelty for a camera. You can take a picture by saying one of four commands: “smile”, “cheese”, “capture” or “shoot” as well as directing it to record video or zoom in or out. Not a phone or tablet replacement, but a good quality camera with user-friendly, well-developed software for connecting, sharing and editing on the fly, as well as finding your way around and taking notes and yet another great addition to the Samsung family. Not convinced yet that Samsung are THE electrical and appliance powerhouse of 2013? Let us take a look at the household appliances. If you have ever used/owned a Samsung appliance you will know that they have always offered their customers great performance and style. U.K. residents have been fortunate to be offered a free 5 year parts and labour warranty on all ecoBubble washing machines and G-Series refrigerators. If that does not make you want a Samsung appliance, maybe this will make you need one. A variety of trusted environmental and consumer organisations have praised Samsung’s award winning laundry products for being kinder to the environment, without compromising on wash performance, design or functionality. Their G-Series fridge freezer range maximises your storage space, With up to 400 litres storage space, you can store all your foods and drinks without needing to return to the supermarket earlier than you need to. They say Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither was the Samsung brand; founded in 1938 by Lee Byung-chull in Samsung Town, Seoul, South Korea. Lee Byung-chull started Samsung as a trading company, and after 30 years it was spread into different sectors which included, textiles, food processing, insurance, retail and securities. Towards the end of the 1960s Samsung got Samsung Appliances involved with the electronics industry, and later in the mid-1970s in the shipbuidling and construction industries. Consequently these areas drove the growth of the company. Upon the death of founder Lee Byung-chull in 1987, Samsung was split into four business groups: The Samsung Group, Hansol Group, Shinsegae Group and the CJ Group. Since the 1990s Samsung has increasingly globalised its activities, and electronics, particularly mobile phones and semiconductors, has become its most 1st Ever Samsung PC SPC-100 important source of income. Today consumSamsung headquarters in the late 1930s ers worldwide are enjoying the benefits of Samsungs productivity, which was last recorded to have had 369,000 employees worldwide. The most notable Samsung industrial subsidiary Samsung Electronics was measured by 2012 revenues as the world’s largest information technology company. With over 70 years of sustainable growth, it is no wonder samsung is currently the recepient of many awards, and the people’s choice when it comes to electricals and appliances.

BUSINESS

LEGALTAINMENT: Contracts

“When you sign a contract do you pay attention to what you are signing?”

T

Gone are the days when the entertainment industry was seen as a non-lucrative business. With the growth in celebrity culture, countries around the world have seen this as a tool for tourism and large corporations with their savvy advisors have seen this as a great marketing tool; some politicians have used the “celebrity” for their political campaigns, like President Sata with artist Dandy Crazy and President Obama with most of Hollywood royalty from Will Smith to Leonard Nimoy. The entertainment industry has become such a vital part in society, in particular when important matters need to be addressed, most companies and organisations look to people within the entertainment industry in order to boost awareness on what they are campaigning for. So what better time for individuals within the entertainment industry to become savvy and well informed on their legal rights, not just when dealing with large businesses, endorsements, but within the industry itself.

he introduction of self reliance and entrepreneurship has encouraged many people to venture out on their own to start their own business, and that has streamed in to the entertainment business. Following the successes of several artists who have managed to penetrate the industry whilst being independent of a major record label, many other artists have ventured into being “self signed” and other individuals have formed record labels in order to pioneer artists. However as much as this is a good idea if you have a well branded artist and are aware of how to market them, the logistics behind any agreements made seem to fall by the wayside. Many artists in part, get offended at the idea of signing a contract as it comes across as though they are not to be trusted. Much to the contrary. What they do not realise is a contract can be the difference between making a fortune in the long run or losing out on various potential earnings.

Entertainment Business, the law and you!

As consumers, we enter into contracts on a daily basis; the

moment we purchase an item from a store, we have entered into a contract with the store, giving us the right to return our purchase if found not to be satisfied with it, as long as we have proof of purchase. When communication takes place between two individuals and the other offers a good for sale to the other individual, that is referred to as “Offer and acceptance” according to Wikipedia “Offer

and acceptance analysis is a traditional approach in contract law used to determine whether an agreement exists between two parties. Agreement consists of an offer by an indication of one person (the “offeror”) to another (the “offeree”) of the offeror’s willingness to enter into a contract on certain terms without further negotiations. A contract is said to come into existence when acceptance

BUSINESS of an offer (agreement to the terms in it) has been communicated to the offeror by the offeree and there has been consideration bargainedfor induced by promises or a promise and performance. In as much as the standard contractual terms will apply when a verbal agreement is made, and is still admissible in court if the need arises. Written contracts, offer security and safeguards your business and career. The vitality of a contract in what might appear to be a minor issue, might not only have an effect on you financially in the long term, but determines what type of business traffic comes your way. Companies and individuals that put contracts in place when dealing with 3rd parties are likely to be taken more seriously, because you need to remember that a contract not only safeguards you, but it reassures the other party signing it that they will be protected if all goes pear shape, it also shows that you are taking the business transaction seriously enough to have taken the time to look into it thoroughly and secure it by implementing a contractual agreement. With standard terms of law being practiced on contracts in the entertainment industry; it is sub-devided into several areas based on the types of undertakings that apply to them, with their own production techniques, negotiation strategies, rules and customs as well as case law. So it is highly recommended to look into the laws that apply within your country of abode on the following: TELEVISION and RADIO, FILM, MUSIC, PUBLISHING, MULTIMEDIA, THEATRE, VISUAL

ARTS AND DESIGN. The most common clauses that apply in contracts for the mentioned are intellectual property, copyright laws, mechanical rights, and licensing. If you are looking for representation as an artist, DJ, presenter or model, the best manager you can get is a lawyer. Many lawyers have ventured into the entertainment industry not just as part of their job, however some have found themselves managing the acts they were initially representing as lawyers. Some firms actually specialise in lawyer/managers, although in most cases when a lawyer makes a transition to become an acts manager they tend to make a complete transition where a lawyer is hired to replace them or for the most part they are able to assist with legal matters that arise due to their background. If you are not able to obtain legal representation, the internet is full of valuable information right at your fingertips. You can find contracts online that are downloadable, which relate to your particular field, some are free and some require registration and payment. The free ones tend to be short and not cover as much as you need, however the paid ones, will have an extensive list of clauses within your career that you can cover so that you are protected fully. Alternatively talk to friends, the ones attending law school or just graduated are the best choice. Regardless of where you retrieve your contract from, ensure that you do retrieve one and get one printed and signed when entering into any agreement.

IGNITE ADVERT

C

uthbert Mubanga also known as Sky Voltex is an 18 year old Lusaka born and raised resident, pretty boy as some would say but more importantly, he is a very talented Graphics designer. His skill set can easily be compared to that of graphic designers that have earned degrees in the art with big corporate CVs. And so you can imagine the work of what we thought was of a 20 something plus year old to be the work of a not so ordinary 18 year old. On how he tackles projects Cuthbert said: “I can’t really tell you how I tackle projects because I don’t really have an answer to that, I basically give the project my all and give the client what they want”

3D GRAPHICS BY SKYVOLTEX The creative graphics designer learns his skill by studying the software he uses through reading. Unlike most designers who tend to use tutorials which are handy for improving your skills, however for Cuthbert his preference is to learn from scratch by himself, allowing him to create his own style of designing. “That’s what has helped me stand out because I do things other designers don’t,” he says “I have my own unique approach towards my work and to be honest; I don’t even know how I got to expand my portfolio. People just get interested in my work and give me projects, and that’s how it keeps expanding”

TISING AGENCY DESIGN BY SKYVOLTEX

SKYVOLTEX with Emmanual Mayuka, Zambian national football player on an Airtel advert

Cuthbert spends some of his time networking with fellow designers/animators where he gets to share his knowledge and pick up some ideas as well; as well as regular practice this has served as an aid to improving his skill. Still fresh out of school with his IGCSE certificate, Cuthbert obtained a job with Quicklash, which was for a period of 4 months, when he was offered a job with Inzy advertising but ended up taking the job offer from GroundXero who he has been with for almost a year now. In addition to his job, he also works on numerous private projects. At the age of 16 Cuthbert and his best friend started an animation studio called Gofresh media which played a ma jor role in getting him discovered by GroundXero. Gofresh is in the process of re branding and being set up as a proper business. “I have been fortunate to have supportive parents who have provided opportunities for me”

All in all Cuthbert works tirelessly “it has taken a lot of hard work and dedication and a lot of hours working and not having much of a social life because every day, I am always trying to learn a new skill and eventually it does pays off.” He says “I recently worked on a private project with Big Brother Africa Director Warren Bleksley and those are the advantages of hard work, you get to connect with different people and learn new things. I am far from the level I want to reach but right now the sleepless nights are paying off.” Cuthbert’s work ethic is certainly to be admired; his focus for someone his age is astounding, and certainly a breath of fresh air and hope for the future generation for employability and entrepreneurship.

ast year, Shadrach was among hundreds of contestants who took part in a singing competition that was the first of its kind. Dreams Zambia, is the first singing competition in Zambia to have offered an astounding KR250,000 which Shadrach was fortunate enough to walk away with. I sat down with Shadrach to get an insight on his journey during the competition and the KR250,000 win.

“I believe music is something God ordained me to do,” says Dreams winner Shadrach Lungu. “Music is my passion, said the 27 year old. For me winning is a privilege and also God’s favour. It’s a way for God to say ‘this is what I called you for.’ Music is something I dream, something I eat. Something I believe God ordained for me to do.”

COVER STORY “I believe music is something God ordained me to do”

He however admitted that despite scooping the grand prize, the competition was quite a challenge saying that it was anyone’s game. As I sat listening to him confidently speak, I realised that it was actually the same poise and determination he exhibited before me that made him the people’s favourite, especially at the grand finale. “Yes the competition was tricky. Everyone was good at what they were doing but we also helped each other when we went into boot camp; but again, every morning and every night I would usually have my devotion during the same boot camp week. So yeah, it was a great experience being part of the competition with so many talented people,” he said. The visibly excited Shadrach recalled how he

nearly lost out on the fortune. “I was in Ethiopia visiting my adoptive parents... Then I saw an advert on Facebook while I was checking for my mail. I told mum about it and she said ‘wow’ you have to go for it; and believe it, I came to Zambia on the last day of the auditions, 20 minutes before the auditions were closed. I was number 187,” explained Shadrach. When asked what inspired him to enter the competition, the Season One Dreams Zambia winner quickly dismissed that he was prompted to enter the competition because of the prize money but rather believed that it was a conviction of destiny. In his usual dignified manner, Shadrach revealed that he intended to invest his winnings in revamping his music studio on the Copperbelt as

COVER STORY well as into other business ventures which he hoped would benefit the up-and-coming artistes in the country. Born and bred on the Copperbelt, Shadrach, the oldest in a family of two, also has a degree in Theology and Music; he formed a band called “The Ephesians Project” soon after graduating from University in 2006. Shadrach believes that the seven-man band played a huge role in his music career; they currently have two albums titled “Silent Loud Voice” and “Abana Bankondo Reloaded” and is yet to work on a solo project. Having spent a number of years in the music industry, the gospel artist paid tribute to some of the seasoned musicians that he has rubbed shoulders with along the way. “The time we were in South Africa in 2010, we shared the stage with Don Moen, Rebecca Malope, Cece Winans and Kirk Franklin. I have also worked with Zambian musicians like Cactus, Shyman and Shimasta.” Shadrach disclosed.

Shadrach is currently in a committed relationship, and the not so available bachelor is currently in the studio recording a 12 track contemporary album. Dreams was Zambia’s biggest music reality show aimed at discovering Zambia’s next musical sensation from across the country. The show attracted hundreds of participants from Lusaka, Livingstone, Kitwe, and Chipata, all of whom were gunning for the KR250,000 prize money. Season Two of the competition is set to be launched soon. The organisers have already announced it on their social media sites such as Facebook. We look forward to interviewing the next winner of Dreams Zambia, and it was a such a pleasure interviewing Shadrach, we are loving his spread as our first ever cover boy, we wish him all the best in his music career from the entire TGZ team, and we shall continue following his journey.

MUSIC MaTTERS

Zambian music has come through leaps and bounds in the last decade, with artists coming out almost every year, the home grown talent has gained recognition on the international scene as well as Zambian artists in the diaspora bringing in something different into Zambian music.

ALBUM LaUNCHES Petersen zagaze: job 13:13

“Keep silent and let me speak; then let come to me what may.” That is the verse that reads from the title of Petersen’s Job 13:13 album which was released on the 9th of July 2012. A controversial album to say the least, but thoroughly entertaining. Petersen holds no punches at addressing issues within the Zambian society that some have been more than happy to stay content with and keep mum. Not one to shy away from controversy through truth telling in his music, one of the most talked about tracks from the album ‘Amakwebo mu Church’ were he points out the activities such as the buying and selling of items in the church, which according to the Christian religion is forbidden. Controversy or not Petersen is one of the greatest talents to come out of Zambia, offering informative yet catchy music to listeners around the world, a 1st class entertainer and well deserved of the album tour that was sponsored by Zamtel, and Muvi TV. Job 13:13 is available as a CD purchase as well as online on Petersen’s reverbnation. The downside is that it is not available on the digital stores such as iTunes, Spotify and Amazon. An entertaining listen, we give this album a 9/10. Find Petersen at www.facebook.com/petersenzagaze

Pompi: mizu

Mizu (roots) was one of the most anticipated albums of the year, released on 8th December 2012, Pompi had started off by giving his fans and music lovers a taste of what was to come with songs like chipolopolo , make up and nipempela. The Lotahouse artist who straddles rap and singing, has a soothing approach with his lyrical style. Calm yet to the point, you will automatically find yourself agreeing with most of the points he puts emphasis on, perhaps too calm in parts, that you can easily drift away. As a Gospel artist, he ensures to stick to the message whilst continuing to entertain you through the mixture of Afro, reggae and acoustics sounds. An album that has gotten many to have new found love for gospel music and one we definitely recommend. Mizu can be purchased on iTunes and other major digital stores as well as sounds and itsretunes. We give this album an 8/10. Find Pompi at www.facebook.com/Pompi.Lotahouse

Mag44 jijue

38 THE GLOBAL ZAMBIAN

Mag44 yet another talent from the Lotahouse family recently released his debut album titled Jijue. The album features tracks like the hit Vichani, Shipikisha Club and Me I beat ft Esther phiri. Mag44 is a gospel rapper hip extraordinaire, who knows how to relay his message whilst keeping the listener entertained. This might be down to being under the same label, but the production style does not differ much from Pompi’s Mizu album. Nevertheless, we still can’t get enough of Mag44, we are looking forward to seeing which single from the album he shall be releasing next, in the meantime you can get copies of his album from sounds, and iTunes. We give this album an 8/10. You can find Mag44 at www.facebook.com/Mag4four May/June 2013

10 MOST MEMORABLE MOMENTS OF

2012

A year to remember

Like the United Kingdom, 2012 was an eventful year for Zambia. Right from the beginning of the year all the way to the end, there was always something happening that had the world talking. 01

Chipolopolo AFCON 2012 Win

February 2012,had the entire world saying or trying to pronounce Chipolopolo, as Zambia’s national team paid homage to the previously deceased Gabon flight national team victims upon their win at the finals of the Africa Cup Of Nations, against finalists Ivory coast. A huge triumph for Zambia and a bittersweet victory in Libreville, Gabon. A moment that can never be forgotten.

02

Levy Mwanawasa Stadium opened

What a delight it was to see a stadium of its stature erected in Zambia, Named after the late president Mwanawasa, the multi-purpose stadium holds a capacity of 44,000 people and is currently the home of the Zambian national team. It couldn’t have been opened at a better time as its first international game was a world cup qualifier between Zambia and Ghana which resulted in a 1-0 to Zambia.

A man & His guitar Zambia has a lot of ordinary people living what seems like ordinary lives, but how they live their lives is what make them extraordinary.

H

is index and middle fingers are wrapped with a soft form of aluminium, and his fingers become a blur as he strums his guitar, filling the air with the upbeat rhythm of his African guitar. Even when people approach him he is unperturbed and plays on with the same look of joy on his face. An open guitar case lies at his feet and there are kwacha notes of different denominations held down by a spanner.

Carnesius Michelo rises early and is on the pavement with his guitar by 10am daily and he has been playing at the same spot since 2007. He was born in Monze, to peasant farmer parents, and is the third child among five. He was born a healthy child but as he grew older his sight began to fail him, by the time he reached grade four he was completely near sighted and could not take part in any of the activities that his fellow children and siblings could. Being unable to see resulted in him spending most of the time alone and that is when he started to look within for other ways to be useful. His father owned a small battery powered radio that Carnesius spent time listening to. Being of Catholic faith, he listened to gospel and P.K Chishala and in time he had a

friend in his village make a ‘Banjo’ for him and he started mimicking what he heard. Carnesius fell in love with music and it was only a matter of time before he became popular in his village. Despite his obvious talent, his family failed to continue taking care of him and that was when he made the decision to move to Lusaka. Blind and with nobody but a young nephew to rely on Carnesius struggled through his first days in Lusaka and that was when he made his first move. He appeared on ZNBC’s Kwacha Good Morning Show with his banjo and traditional melodies and he requested for well-wishers to assist him in any way they could. Mr Sinkala in the ZNS band donated a guitar to him, and that was how he found himself with a guitar playing for whoever would listen. Carnesius Michelo plays 8 hours daily at the same spot and it is not all rosy, the Zambian weather is at times too harsh and people are not always kind. On some days he earns Kr15 - Kr25 and on his good days he earns Kr75-Kr150. People either ignore him or give but still he plays on. Sometimes he plays at his church or he is called by people who enjoy his

The unemployment levels in Lusaka leave much to be desired and the result is many people are living below the poverty line. Many of them have a disability or do not possess the required educational qualifications to find a job. In the end, many resort to begging in order to meet a few of their basic needs. This is the scene every day in Lusaka along Cairo road. There are different kinds of people who ask for alms but outside food fair there is a particular man who stands out.

particular genre. He lives in Chawama with his wife and two children now. Through interaction one realises that Carnesius Michelo considers himself as a musician and actually enjoys his music. His songs are about Christianity and focus on social awareness with lessons in social issues. The message is either direct or wrapped in a folktale and he sings in Bemba and Tonga. The divisions in society are many and whilst there is development in some areas, some people continue to suffer and live below the poverty line. Who is it up to in this case to improve one’s standard of living; is it a personal choice to use a skill to generate some form of income or is it the government that must make the economic environment conducive for all to thrive. Are people like Carnesius Michelo musicians or simply beggars with guitars? Regardless of the circumstance, it is possible to make the most of a situation and improve one’s life.

Zambia is a rich and vibrant country, full of strong and amazing people going about their everyday lives, NEW BOOK SHOWCASES ESSENCE OF LIFE IN ZAMBIA Former rake resident launches photography volume PETERSFIELD, HAMPSHIRE- April 19, 2013 – Scenes from everyday life throughout Zambia are the subject of a new book of documentary photographs recently published by a former Rake resident. Postcards from Zambia by Dr Peter Langmead aims to showcase the nation in a positive light, highlighting people and society from all corners of the African country. “Zambia is a rich and vibrant country, full of strong and amazing people going about their everyday lives,” explained Dr Langmead. “My aim was to capture that essence of the heart of Zambia, for two reasons: firstly to counter the West’s all-too-often negative view of Africa, and secondly to try to provide a benchmark for recording society for the benefit of Zambia.” The 95-page book features 77 stunning photographs taken by Dr Langmead during his travels around Zambia and reflecting almost 40 years working as a development consultant. Continued...

PHOTOGRAPHY Continued from page 46... The book also features an introduction that explores the parallels between the history of Zambia and that of photography, which share some intriguing milestones. The camera first arrived in what is now called Zambia with David Livingstone’s expedition of 1858-64, and Victoria Falls was first photographed in 1892. When Zambia achieved Independence in 1964, the world was beginning to develop colour photography. Dr Langmead hopes the book will inspire a new generation of budding Zambian photographers to take up documentary photography and ensure that the life of the country is chronicled for posterity. Dr Langmead grew up in Rake and Petersfield, and attended Ardingly School in Sussex before embarking on a 40-year career in international development that has encompassed photography, film making and consultancy across Africa and Asia. Dr Langmead will be signing Postcards from Zambia at One Tree Books in Lavant Street, Petersfield, from 10am to noon on Saturday, April 20. The book is also available from www.amazon.co.uk. The images are also being toured as an exhibition in Zambia, and can be viewed at www. peterlangmead.com, and on www.facebook.com/ postcardsfromzambia Postcards from Zambia is published by Langmead & Baker Ltd. ISBN 978-9982-896-02-3. Price: £10.

Real life

LIVING WITH HIV H

IV and AIDS is a sensitive subject in most parts of the globe. Many assume once they have contracted the virus, it is the end of the world for them, when in actual fact it is simply a change of lifestyle. Places like Zambia and other 3rd world countries in particular, have struggled with the stigma that comes with contracting the virus, making it very difficult for individuals to openly speak about it or share with close family and friends on the effects the virus has had on them. In some cases the emotional effects have been rather severe, with individuals committing suicide to denial, or making no effort in caring about their wellbeing and simply plunging into a carefree lifestyle without consideration on taking precautionary measures, therefore putting more people at risk. Others tend to seclude themselves and completely withdraw from the community, alienating themselves from friends and family. With the aid of individuals and organisations providing information and means of educating people of the dangers of HIV and how to take precautionary measures if one is infected with the virus. More people are willing to seek counselling, moral support and medical support to enable them to live a healthy normal lifestyle. The Global Zambian Magazine have been following the journeys of several individuals living with HIV and their stories are something our readers can surely not only be inspired by, but learn from. We spoke to Paul Banda, some of you might have spotted him in the MTV documentary back in 2010 titled ‘Me Myself and HIV’; this is Paul’s story:

also liked and was good at drawing and painting which took up most of my free time as a kid. Tables turned for the worse in early 2003 when I started experiencing chest pains. We visited a few doctors and their diagnosis was pneumonia. I was treated for pneumonia and I got better but a few weeks later I started feeling the pain again. We got deeply concerned so went to seek advice from a different doctor at a government clinic this time. I took sputum tests for tuberculosis (TB) but the results were negative. This did not stop the doctor from prescribing TB treatment for 6 months because he was convinced without a doubt that what I was exhibiting were symptoms of TB. At the end of those 6 months I was back to my old self feeling healthy again.

Style Icon

Words By Ethel Gondwe

We have selected Thandie Newton as this month’s style icon as she exudes grace, both on and off screen, is a great role model, and philanthropist, has an impeccable fashion sense, and she has a small tie to our beloved Zambia. On being asked a question by Nigel Slater host of A Taste of My Life, Series 4 (BBC Two, 4 June 2008), Thandie answered: “Actually I don’t know how my mum and dad managed to do this. But we lived in Zambia, and my mum was pregnant with me. And I was born on a two-week trip back to London, and then we went back to Zambia and my brother was born there. And we ended up coming to England finally when I was three years old.” (Left) In Temperley London lace, Jimmy Choo Koko sandals and Sofia Coppola for Louis Vuitton Slim Suede Asphalt Clutch (Right) In patent leggins and oversized blazer (Below) in Issabelle Ramant

Something that never misses with super star Usher is his ability to look sleek and well groomed; and that is exactly what you need to be aiming for, when it comes to the red carpet. Men don’t like spending too much time grooming themselves so we kept it simple. A clean haircut, trimmed well in the edges. We recommend to have a (1)Diane brush in your collection, the bristles enable you to smoothly brush the hair to a neat finish. Add some (2)Motions hair and scalp moisturiser, and for that added sheen, apply (3)Olive Creme hair dress. For the face, you cannot go wrong with the Nivea men’s products and the (4)face scrub, which can exfoliate your skin and get rid of any dead skin, Note: do not rub your face dry as most men do, simply pat it dry, to avoid skin irritation. Apply the (5)rehydrating moisturiser massaging gently into the skin and finish the look with a touch of (6) Nivea men’s lip balm, and you are ready to face those cameras.

However this year all seems to be changing for greener pastures, you can say. With homes being redecorated to green, clothing, accessories and the list goes on. If this much effort was implemented into the plight against global warming there would certainly be less toxins roaming the air, but you never know; green making its mark might encourage more people to go green not only with fashion but with the environment as well.

tip s

to

Participate in new fun exercise regimes to keep you from getting bored

Health & Fitness 01 Drinking water

Your body needs water and other fluids in order to avoid dehydration. Approximately two thirds of an average healthy body’s weight consists of water. Water is also required by the blood to carry nutrients around the body and to get rid of waste. The recommended fluid intake per day is 1.2ltrs. All fluids count however the more healthy options are water, milk, and fruit; it is best to avoid the sugary soft or fizzy drinks as they contain a high level of added sugars which can be unhealthy and bad for your teeth.

In order to stay healthy it is vital to replace the fluids we release through urination, breathing and sweating. When we do not take enough fluids our bodies become dehydrated and one of the first signs of this is feeling thirsty. Other signs include headaches, not passing enough urine, feeling light-headed and a lack of energy.

02 Exercise to drop a size If you are looking to drop a size, or lose weight. One rule of thumb is that you need to ensure the amount of energy you burn exceeds the amount of energy you consume. One of the best ways to do this is to have a diet and exercise plan in place. There are some key steps you can take to reduce your daily energy consumption. Food portions can be rationed to smaller sizes, cut down on fatty foods like fizzy drinks, chocolates, cakes. Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables, drink plenty of water, minimum of 1.5 litres per day is the recommended daily amount. One of the things that can help is if you write down what you eat and at the end of every day, you go through your list. This allows you a realistic perspective of your eating habits and will help you find a medium of balancing the healthy foods and what you can eat as a special treat every so often. When you have entered into an exercise regime, carbohydrates are your friend. Do not let the Hollywood fad of avoiding carbs fool you. Carbohydrates are the fuel that power your exercise regime. Carbohydrates are an essential energy source for the brain and central nervous system. Once you have your diet in place, jogging for a minimum of 30 minutes each day before work/school is a great way to get your metabolism up. Bike riding, treadmills at the gym, and aerobics classes offer a variety of exercise routines that will also tone your muscle.

May/June 2013

03 Relaxation We are living in a century were everyone is constantly on the move. Everybody is trying to reach that quota, deadline or make their mark, and as a result we have become all about work, work, work. All work and no play makes for a stressed out you. Relaxing these days has become so rare and yet it is vital to our mental and physical health. There are great benefits to be achieved when you practice relaxing, such as improvement in concentration, reduced blood pressure, reduced anger and frustration, slowing down of your heart rate and more. It takes time to get into a routine that includes relaxation however the more you practice the better you will get. Try getting a massage once every month, dedicating a day in your week to catch up on your favourite book, or TV program. Taking a walk around your neighbourhood for a good hour or so. Exercise at least 3 times a week should do the trick.

HEALTH & FITNESS

06 Winding down

04 Healthy eating The glory about living in a country like Zambia is that you are never short on healthy foods, the food is all fresh and organic without the added price tag of having to get “organic” vegetables from the supermarket shelf. Your local market offers a great selection of healthy foods that you can create great interesting recipes from. If you are a lover of t-bone, you can make it healthy by trimming off that fat. Skin your chicken before cooking it to avoid the excess fat found under the skin. Instead of frying, try boiling or steaming your vegetables, add natural herbs for flavour as they do not contain preservatives. As mentioned in the other tips, eat plenty of vegetables and fruit, they are high in fibre, contain less fat and are a good source of carbohydrates which fuels your body.

05 Exercise and snacks Idle thumbs makes for a very peckish you. Most people tend to crave snacks when under a lot of pressure with work, or when they are bored out of their minds. Snacks are OK so long as you do not mistake them for your actual meal. If you are going to have crisps or chocolate for your snack, do it sporadically and replace your other snacks with a piece of fruit and water, not only does it do wonders for your health but water also helps clear up your skin.

Pretty much everyone has been faced with the dilemma of wanting to stay up in order to get more out of your day, and finished that project you have been working on, however sometimes, no matter how hard you try to stay awake your body simply says no and before you know, it is the next day or some 4 to 5 hours later and you are wondering what on earth happened? This is in part due to a substance called adenosine which builds up while you’re awake and your body breaks it down when you are asleep. Another substance is a hormone called melatonin this is what makes you feel sleepy. You can call it the gate keeper of your “biological clock” as it is what determines when you start feeling sleepy, with occurrences taking place between midnight and 7am, and also 1pm and 4pm when your melatonin levels are high. A number of aspects of your health and quality of life are linked to sleep, and these aspects are impaired when you are sleep deprived. If you would like to get better results at work, be more focussed in lectures, have more energy in your daily routine, the answer is simple; sleep. 8 hours is the average recommended amount of time for sleep to allow your body to regenerate, although sometimes that varies depending on the individual.

Baking with Kanta CKakes

If you have not tasted Kanta Kakes, I would strongly suggest you place an order immediately, yes they are that scrumptious, and in my opinion better than the big brands we buy into regularly. After over indulging in a dozen of her Kup Kakes; it was only natural that I find out more about this giftBy Ethel Gondwe ed young lady and her ever so delicious Kup Kakes

GZ: Hi Kanta it is a delight having you for this interview. ANTA: Thank you, I’m very happy that you asked me to take part.

K

TGZ: Tell me a little bit about yourself, where you are from and where you currently reside. KANTA: My name is Kanta, I’m 21 years old and I am the owner of Kanta Kakes, a bespoke cake making business based in Hertfordshire England. I was born in Lusaka Zambia and when I was 7 my family and I moved to the U.K. where I currently reside.

Flower topped wedding cake (handmade flowers)

TGZ: Kanta is a name I have never heard before, what tribe is it from and what is the meaning behind it? KANTA: That’s funny but true, not many Zambians have ever heard the name ‘Kanta’ before. My mum and dad are Bemba; the only other Zambian people that I know with the name Kanta are a few of my relatives. I’m not sure of the meaning in Bemba or any other Zambian tribe. However it has a few different meanings in different countries, for example it means song in the Philippines, it also means desired, beloved or radiant in India.

TGZ: When did you first realise your talent for baking? KANTA: I had a keen interest in cooking as soon as I was able to cook; this was around the age of 8 or 9. At secondary school one of the classes that I always wanted to take was food technology; but I didn’t get the chance to do so until my GCSE’s. I realised my talent when I was about 14 years old as I excelled in food technology. I remember I was always happy when cooking and particularly when baking. However it was only when I left university that I realised that I really had something special and could pursue cake making and decorating as a career. TGZ: Did you take up culinary arts in school and university in order to pursue a career in baking? KANTA: I took food technology at secondary school for my GCSE’s. However I did not take any other culinary arts courses at school or university. When I left university I took three professional cake decorating courses, to help me hone my skills and to help me learn new techniques and gain experience. Vintage wedding cake TGZ: When did you make a decision to turn baking it into a career? KANTA: I made the decision to turn baking into a career when I was in my second year of university. I had reached a crossroads in my life and felt unhappy in the degree that I was studying. It was at that time that I felt there had to be more to life and that I would be better off doing a career that I loved, rather than one that I hated. So after some serious thought I left university to pursue a career in cake making and decorating. TGZ: Your word play on your name and using the letter K for Kakes to subsequently match it with your name Kanta fits perfectly, how did that come about? KANTA: Thank you. When I decided to start a cake business, I knew that I wanted to have my name in the business name. I had been playing with a few options, the name that kept coming back to me was ‘Kanta Bakes Cakes’, but I knew that, that would be too long, I wanted something catchy and straight to the point. I then thought I’ll drop the bakes and have ‘Kanta’s Cakes’, but this still didn’t sound right. When my sister asked me what I would call my business, the first thing that came out of my mouth was ‘Kanta Cakes’ to make it stand out I decided to spell cakes with a ‘K’. I immediately fell in love with the name and knew it was perfect for my business.

TGZ: You are in competition with some major brands that cater for massive corporations, does that ever intimidate you, and how is your business affected with so many catering companies, not to mention supermarkets stocking quite a variety of cakes? It would be intimidating, if I was to compare myself to other cake makers and major companies in the same industry. However I try not to do so, instead I use them as inspiration. KANTA: As you’ve mentioned, there are many catering companies and supermarkets that stock a variety of cakes, but I don’t think that they have had a negative effect on my business. There has been a large increase in demand for bespoke cakes. There is something very special about having a beautiful cake made to your specific requirements, with a personalised design or message. I believe that my cakes are different from other cake makers, caterers, and supermarkets. My goal is to make people’s dream cakes into a reality. I make cakes that embody people’s passions, hobbies and memories etc. The fact that I can create and make cakes that encompass all of this is what sets me apart from my competitors. TGZ: What is your favourite recipe to date and what is your most requested order from your clients? KANTA: I really like carrot cake; I love the flavour and texture of it. My most requested cake flavour is vanilla closely followed by carrot cake. The majority of my cake orders are for birthday cakes. Snow white cake

TGZ: Who has been your biggest client so far? KANTA: That’s a good question. I’ve worked with a variety of clients but a few that stand out are Ebony inspired: A Black Entrepreneur’s Network U.K. (I made a cake for their one year anniversary party), Kemi’s boutique: A London based Wedding dress designer (I made some cakes for their special event in London) and Great Ormond Street Hospital (I made some cupcakes for their charity fundraiser). TGZ: As a young lady having established your own business, it can’t have been easy. What sort of difficulties have you faced along your way? KANTA: I am very blessed and thankfully I haven’t experienced too many difficulties. However I would say that most of my difficulties occurred before I began my training and started my business. It was nerve wracking being young and leaving university without a degree. I had very little relevant experience in culinary arts; all I had was a passion to bake. I had to go back to basics and restructure my thinking; I had little to no help or guidance regarding what steps to take. One difficulty that I experienced once I established my business was having the confidence in my product, and realising the high standard and quality of my cakes. It is very easy to “sell yourself short”, especially when you are an artist. I had to learn to be more confident in my work. TGZ: Where do you see Kanta Kakes in the next 5 years? KANTA: I have very big dreams and believe that if ‘I dream big I will achieve big’. In the next 5 years I see Kanta Kakes catering for the rich and famous, and being internationally known. I would love to open up my shop in the U.K. as well as in other major cities worldwide. I would love to be known as one of the best and most successful cake makers globally. Kanta Kakes are available for order and can be viewed at www.kantakakes.co.uk. Follow Kanta on twitter @KantaKakes and kantakakes.tumblr.com. What’s tingling your taste buds? We give you our food and restaurant recommendations of the month

Breakfast

A morning stop at Mugg & Bean at Lusaka’s Manda Hill or Levy Mall, for a nice Livingstone Breakfast should send you to work with a big satisfied smile on your face. As well as being delicious the Livingstone Breakfast covers all the food groups, in one serving. Eggs, sausages, bacon, hash browns and tomatoes; giving you all the nutrients you need for the most important meal of the day. If that doesn’t tingle your taste buds nothing else will.

Lunch

For lunch nothing heavy is required, the last thing you need is to fall asleep during work because you’re stuffed like a turkey. So take it easy with a return trip to Mugg & Bean for a soothing Moroccan Butternut soup. It is thick and creamy and will fill you up just right. For the heavier eaters, try having some brown or garlic bread on the side with it. That should cure any hunger pangs and refuel you until dinner.

Dinner

Make a dinner stop at none other than Shaka’s Grill at Manda Hill. You can relax in the ambience of the restaurant while you wait for your serving of the mouth watering ribs served with a salad and any other side of your choice. You can also take advantage of the Shaka’s special offers like the Tuesday KR100 for all the ribs you can eat.

FOOD & NUTRITION

Make your own

Most people fancy themselves as a bit of a cook/amateur chef. So to encourage all those home chefs, here is a recipe that you can add to your repertoire of well made dishes.

Chicken cacciatore (Italian) Ingredients Serves 4 6 chicken breasts with skin and backbone, halved crosswise 2 teaspoons salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/2 cup all purpose flour, for dredging 3 tablespoons olive oil 1 large red bell pepper, chopped 1 onion, chopped 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped 3/4 cup dry white wine 28-ounces of diced ripe tomatoes 3/4 cup reduced-sodium chicken broth 3 tablespoons drained capers 1 1/2 teaspoons dried oregano leaves 1/4 cup coarsely chopped fresh basil leaves Directions Note: allow for approximately one hour for preparation and cooking. Sprinkle the chicken pieces with 1 teaspoon of each salt and pepper. Dredge the chicken pieces in the flour to coat lightly. In a large heavy sauté pan(pot), heat the oil over a medium-high flame/5 on Electric hobs. Add the chicken pieces to the pan and sauté just until brown, about 5 minutes per side. If all the chicken does not fit in the pan, sauté it in 2 batches. Transfer the chicken to a plate and set aside. Add the bell pepper, onion and garlic to the same pan and sauté over medium heat until the onion is tender, about 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Add the wine and simmer until reduced by half, about 3 minutes. Add the tomatoes with their juice, broth, capers and oregano. Return the chicken pieces to the pan and turn them to coat in the sauce. Bring the sauce to a simmer. Continue simmering over medium-low heat until the chicken is just cooked through, about 30 minutes for the breast pieces, if you are using chicken thighs, 20 minutes. Using tongs, transfer the chicken to a large plate. If necessary, boil the sauce until it thickens slightly, about 3 minutes. Spoon off any excess fat from the top of the sauce. Spoon the sauce over the chicken, then sprinkle with the basil and serve with pasta, roast or boiled potatoes, rice or nshima. We would love to hear from you, if you have tried this recipe and successfully executed it, please send your pictures of your finished work and dinner guests to be featured on our website. Send your pictures to submissions@theglobalzambian.com with the subject “make your own”

MTZ My teen zone

Hi, my name is Peace Gondwe, I am 15 years old and I would like to welcome you to My Teen Zone. I am excited to be writing this segment, it is something extra for me to do, so I hope you will join me as I talk about what I like, and what being a teenager is like. I live in London and Lusaka back and forth and the experiences I have had have been different and similar at times. I will also be talking about some of the things I think as teenagers we do not get to talk about, especially in Zambia. Adults don’t really listen to what kids have to say. So maybe when they read this they will get to find out what life is like for a Zambian teenager and most teenagers else where. First of all I just want to say, I recently passed my grade 9 exams whoop whoop, and I am now in grade 10 at boarding school. In my spare time, I love playing basketball, and I enjoy listening to music. I sometimes write songs, and I DJ at school youth events and parties. I guess that keeps me a little occupied and out of trouble.

“I DJ at school and youth events and parties in my spare time”

LIFE THROUGH A ZAMBIAN TEENAGER'S EYES Have you got any questions for me, or if you have a story/experience you would like me to share about your life as a teenager, you can email me at mtz@theglobalzambian.com G “Most places CIN A R Pocket Money GAMING E R K AP have restrictions RBI he Djing thing is actually BA TO O for young M TT a pretty cool way of LE earning some extra S( people, so we do CY money sometimes. EVENTS

activities that most teens get involved in are going to the cinema, the two places we go to are Fresh View cinemas or Ster Kinekor, they show the latest movies, so we are never behind. Right now I cannot wait to watch Iron Man 3, and the Oz 3D is a good movie. I am excited that Despicable Me 2 3D is coming soon, because it is too funny, Epic 3D is also coming out soon too. The 3D experience is so cool. Sometimes the cinema has special offers, so we get to save some money.

I was in London, but I was too young at the time. If something like that was in Zambia, I would definitely sign up,because you spend time riding a bike while delivering newspapers, and earning money. Not all parents can afford to give their children pocket money, so if there was something for us teenagers to do to earn money,I think it would be pretty cool, plus, I think we wouldn’t be so wasteful with the money when we have earned it.

Teenagers are really not taken into consideration when it comes to activities. Most my age play the Xbox or the Playstation 3. The playstation is more popular and the most popular game is FIFA, even adults are addicted to playing it. Other

Most places have restrictions for young people so we do not always have many places to hang out, and it gets really boring most times, That’s why I spend

time listening to music. I like YMCMB, Fun, Will.I.Am, and Zambian artists I like PJ, Afunika, Macky 2 and Chef 187. Other people listen to Taylor Swift, Rihanna, T Sean, Zone Fam, Mag 44. Like most teenagers, most music that is popular is what we all listen to. There are other few activities that I have attended and others have but they don’t happen all the time, like motor bike races, rap battles, R&G events hosted a party for strictly under 18s and it was really good and alcohol free, It was a fun way to include young people in fun activities. Otherwise it is mainly music, and games; the cinema, not everyone can always afford to go.

The

FASHION

YOUTH

skateboard look is the in thing at the moment. It’s a combination of skinny jeans, snapbacks (baseball caps), a duffle bag and vans. Bright coloured t-shirts with graphic prints replacing the baggy jean sagging(which my mum hated) and extra large shirt trend. Girls also wear this, giving them the tomboy look. Accessories people like are the clear raybans with the coloured frames and the colourful rubber wristbands. My choice is skinny jeans rolled up shirt with a t-shirt, and combat boots. I like listening to music from my phone or mp3 player, that’s why smart phones are handy, because I can use them for recording songs. Blackberrys and Androids are the most popular because everyone is always on facebook. Funny enough, I don’t have a facebook account yet, maybe later this year I will think about opening one. I once opened one, but i was under age, so my mum had facebook lock me off(lesson learned hehe). Speaking of mum, my birthday wish this year are beats by Dr Dre (hint hint lol) The way so many people have them, you would think they only cost KR160 or something. Something cool I have seen some people do is they customise their own clothes. That’s a unique way of staying trendy, and I think some can even sell what they make.

“Snap backs have always been in fashion, and vans too just not as popular as they are now”

Let’s discuss: teenage Substance abuse My mum wanted me to come back to Zambia for

Dancing out of poverty and into success When you look at his pictures and watch his dancing on stage, you can see the passion in his eyes, his physique is that of a warrior, somewhat reminiscent of a Zulu warrior with a funky fashion sense. No matter the impression that you get, one thing is for sure, Osward always catches your attention.

H

The conversation started with introductions, to which he identifies himself as Osward Chiti. Osward was born in Kasama, his upbringing was not that of a normal child and was filled with hardships. His father passed away when he was only 2 years old and this took its toll on the family. “I didn’t get to finish school, as there was lack of money” says Osward. So how did dancing come into the picture given the circumstances Osward was faced with, no education, and no money. “It is a natural gift I have always had; I was born with it. As I play soccer I decided to get involved in sport and dance” says Osward. He started dancing when he was still in school, and his interest derived from the Northern Province Bemba (Chiwunda) music also known as Boostele. After some time he was spotted by Zambian singer Mozegeta who asked him to be his back up dancer. As it was what he loved doing and was offering him a paid opportunity. Osward started performing with Mozegeta, and moving around with him on various gigs. Whilst dancing for Mozegeta, a lady from Mozegeta’s group offered him a job to dance for her. The lady in question will turn out to be one of Zambia’s most talked about female singers Kay Figo. This has given Osward the opportunity to perform at the Zambian Music Awards, on the same stage as Ice prince, at the Ngoma awards and several other prominent venues around the country. On his aspiration on his dancing career he says “In Zambia the difficulty is lack of support, so that hinders sometimes, so right now I am learning and trying to find ways to get no-

ticed by bigger artists. My idea” he continues “is that if I can take my dancing far, I hope to record some songs in the studio so that I can perform my songs when I support the artists I dance for.” With his unique physique and the natural ability to attract attention, surely this has had an impact on his popularity. “From the time I performed with Mozegeta I always stood out, people always came to me in recognition of my talent.” He explains as he maintains a confident yet humble demeanour. On his current endeavours, Osward still faces hardship, although less than when he first

started out, he maintains an admirable positive attitude towards everything “My mum raised me by herself so it was a struggle for her, and as I felt like a burden for my mother as she barely could afford my upkeep I had to move out and fend for myself, so currently I am working hard to make ends meet as I take care of my late sisters child. I have to watch how I spend my money, as a dancer, you have to have a certain image on stage, so I customise my own clothes, all the clothes you see me perform in, I customise them myself, and people really like them too.” Having come from a poverty stricken background and performing on the same stage as Zambia’s biggest talent and international talent, Osward had this to say to any aspiring dancers and young people out there who feel like there is no hope for the future. “They shouldn’t give up, they just have to fight, if you are determined with everything you do, if you put your mind to it and you put God first anything is possible you can do anything you shouldn’t give up no matter what” LEFT Getting ready to begin his performance at the Ice Prince concert

Plan ahead for success...

1.

are doing? If not, it might be that time that you started. Planning ahead can help you achieve your goals and, even more importantly, bounce back faster when you’re met with unexpected failures or setbacks. You are aiming for that promotion, starting a business, working towards a 1st class pass for your degree, whatever your goal, the methodology behind it all is the same. One of the first things you should do is write up a S.W.O.T analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats). Now many already know about the SWOT analysis but few put it into practice. Understanding the internal and external factors that can help develop your business or help you pass that test, or get that promotion, is key to planning ahead and preparing yourself thoroughly; and the SWOT analysis is one of the best methods to do this.

2.

You have your SWOT analysis in place so now you understand your strengths and your weaknesses and you know how to apply yourself so that your strengths work to your advantage. You have also established opportunities caused by external factors such as trends, environment, government. This allows you the opportunity to get organised. Look at your daily routine, what do you normally do that is likely to be a waste of your time? Are your priorities in order? Remember if you are vying for that promotion, you should dedicate time to do your research so that if/when you get that promotion you will be able to handle the responsibilities that come with it. If you’re studying to get that 1st class pass, conduct your dissertation research thoroughly, check, and double check, that you not only know but understand what you are studying for those exams, so that when that exam approaches and you are thrown a curve ball of a question, all that time you set aside researching and building an understanding of the module you’re studying will enable you to have an alternative way of answering the question. If you’re starting a business, research your biggest competitors, what are you offering that makes your company a better choice/ different for clients/consumers. What can you do to make your business more appealing? Getting organised, enables you to deal with an influx of work, and challenges when they arise.

What do you hope to achieve in the next 2 years? If you have not thought about it you need to start now. Putting together a 2 year plan, gives you a realistic perspective of where you are and based on your work ethic and planning you should be able to determine an approximation of where you or your business will be after 24 months. When applying a 2 year plan, you need to be honest and realistic with yourself, writing what you hope as opposed to what is likely to transpire, just gives you a false outcome. This can be frustrating and discouraging if realistic goals are not put in place. A realistic 2 year plan will allow you to strategise within your means and ability. The advantage of this is, if you find yourself exceeding your goals, because you have planned for a, b,c to happen within an x amount of time, you will have the added bonus of excess production that can be utilised as a contingency plan, or to get started early on the next 4 years.

To DO List A daily/ weekly to do list will keep you on top of your daily tasks, and will help avoid you falling behind on your long term goals.

You may be good at what you do, but you don’t know it all. Part of planning ahead is about being resourceful. Look beyond your skills and abilities for information and knowledge on what your focus is. There often will be experts who know more about particular parts of an industry than the insiders, know how to recognise these experts, listen to them and learn from them. Help from experts weather direct or indirect will help smooth out your path and work load. Keep good lines of communication between you and the people you work with, so that any new developments and information can be easily related to you as soon as it transpires, allowing you a window of opportunity to adjust any strategies you might have in place. Remember to take care of the people around you; the professional advisors and anyone else who can have an effect on your career goal. Pay attention to what your colleagues, classmates, employees do, show them that you acknowledge their work, and offer to lend a hand every so often. This pays off in due course as they will not forget your helpfulness, and respect for their position. So much that if any opportunities that can benefit you arise, your name is likely to be first on their mind.

Words by Ethel Gondwe

6.

Review your work every 3 to 6 months. You might have the perfect plan put together and would have done all the research in the world however a change of circumstances, weather it be a growth in the business or a decline; reviewing your work keeps you up to date on your progress. You get to see if you are on track with your plan or are falling behind or ahead of the game. Reviewing also allows you to find and fix any errors/cracks in your work. You will have a chance to see if you need to conduct additional research, put in more study time, enquire more from external sources and simply add value to your objectives in order for your plan to continue running smoothly towards your ultimate goal. Think about it this way, planning for success is like planning a wedding. We have all heard of the brides turning into “bridezillas” because of how perfect they want their big day to go. Now without the added franticness; a wedding planner ensures that a wedding ceremony is well thought out and planned right down to the folding of the table cloths on the guest tables. A badly planned wedding means the couple are stuck with that memory for the rest of their lives, and that is why a good wedding planner will always have a contingency plan set aside in case anything goes wrong and they achieve this by collecting as much information about the bride and groom and their families way in advance, so that all plans that are to be executed for the wedding are suitable for both sides of the family and most importantly for the bride(sorry groom). Same applies with you when you are planning ahead, you need to learn and understand your environment, your material and give yourself ample time to start implementing these plans, When you follow the basic guidelines, there is no telling how far you will be able to go. So you want great success? Get started on your plan!

GEMFIELDS Gemfields Announces Global Launch in Collaboration with International Designers practices, Gemfields is committed to bolstering the coloured gemstone sector, especially emphasising the rare, unique qualities of coloured gems. Emeralds, for example, are more than 20 It’s hugely gratifying to see times scarcer than diamonds, our ethically-sourced rare although arguably infinitely coloured gems come to life more exciting, made up of through the unique visions countless microscopic fissures within in each stone. No two of our partner jewellers. emeralds are the same.

Gemfields, the world’s leading coloured gemstone producer, is thrilled to unveil a truly one-of-a-kind set of fine jewellery collaborations with 36 leading international designers.

This spectacular set of designer collaborations underscores not only the beauty of the gemstones, but the range of shades, shapes and sizes that make up Gemfields’ portfolio. From precision cuts, cabochons that look like candy to slices that are ruggedly organic, each Gemfields Zambian emerald, Mozambican ruby and Zambian amethyst was the starting point for a bespoke creation.

“We are honoured to work with such a broad range of extraordinary talent from around the world,” says Ian Harebottle, Gemfields CEO. “While we normally focus on the gemstones, and not the finished jewellery, it’s hugely gratifying to see our ethicallysourced rare coloured gems come to life through the unique visions of our partner jewellers.” The collection will debut in London at Phillips Auction House, travelling next through India and finally to Las Vegas, where it will be displayed at the Couture show in May. The pieces, ranging in retail price from US$1,130 to US$750,000, reflect the bold aesthetic of each designer in the form of fine jewellery. To coincide with the launch of this project, Gemfields is unveiling a new global advertising campaign featuring brand ambassador Mila Kunis wearing ethically-sourced Zambian emeralds and Mozambican rubies shot by Mario Sorrenti in Los Angeles. “Although Gemfields doesn’t make jewellery, they work with a wide range of international designers to create one-of-a-kind pieces from their ethicallysoured emeralds and rubies,” says Mila Kunis. “I’ve loved wearing these pieces on the red carpet because they are all so unique and they stand for Gemfields’ mission of responsible sourcing.”

LIFESTYLE

COVERTLY OVERT Last year, the world was said to be coming to an end. Time; the only thing that is constant was suddenly running out. This inspired philanthropic acts, outrageous acts and the completion of bucket lists worldwide. Time ages things in a way that is unpleasant sometimes.

New love grows old, friends that were close become strangers, and trending fashions become distasteful. Those things that ignited interest begin to inspire boredom. Time makes things old, and old isn't always gold. One good consequence of time however is liberation and positive change. People are now more enlightened and independent enough to try new careers, speak new languages or pursue terrain that they've always loved with a new passion. So who can declare that elements of the past cannot be used to liven up the present and make it all feel new? Fashion constantly refers to the past for inspiration and it could be argued that our recent love for post-modern pastiche - 'mixing elements of the past to create seemingly 'new' styles and ideas' strengthens the sociologist’s theories of the end of history. So some things in the past cannot be left there but have a place today. Old Hollywood is a common reference in vintage fashion. Its symbolised by women in tweed, silk, and chiffon tailored for the female form and the men in slim fitted suits and suave. The red lips, fair skin and soft pure femininity exuded an appeal that today's fashion lacks. Women like Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe were well known for their extravagant lives but they appeared to be in full control of their sexuality and who they were, that it was hard to scandalise them. These attributes can be borrowed from vintage fashion and used by ladies in the present for their everyday looks or for special functions. Vintage style when worn appropriately can ensure one moves with the times but stands out and it’s sexy but covertly overt. For example the red lipstick and Smokey eye make-up adds instant glamour and confidence on any day and an outfit with a cinched waist celebrates the female form while keeping everything appropriate. Hair accessories like berets, fascinators, and scarves add a little enigma to an outfit and can really be handy when dealing with a bad hair day.

Words By Kandi Siame

Time dictates a lot of human life. It tells you when your deadlines are for everything. It tells you when to participate in particular traditions of human society and shows when to stop participating in some. Every rite of passage is wrapped up in time.

One of many rites of passage that time dictates is the time to get married. Many got engaged last minute and when the world didn't end the consequence of their decisions came in form of wedding plans. The hen party is part of those plans and it’s the woman's last time to experience the fullness of femininity and independence. The drinks are served and the women get dolled up and bubbly, all signs of celebration. Hen parties are care free events but a theme helps to put things in order and makes the moment truly memorable for the bride to be. The vintage theme was used at a hen party on the 5th of April for Sibusisiwe Bwalya at colonial gardens and to say it was a success is an understatement. A Bemba woman marrying a Bemba man with a vintage theme hen party, anything could have gone wrong; however while the theme was lost in translation for others, it really helped set a more serene mood in the air and the experience was a fun one. Older guests attending were glad not to see the younger ladies not looking too revealing and the younger ladies were glad to play dress up. A rare thing to hold a hen party in Zambia nonetheless, the event went on without any one witnessing a mob of drunken half naked women and the fun surely happened (Wink). There is a lot to be done as time urges us on but using elements of the past for inspiration can help strengthen the styles and ideas we have today for they give a much needed foundation to be timeless.

Colourful, bright pret a porter clothing is the best way I can describe them as you can easily lift any of the garments straight from a stores rack without the fear of weather they are too high fashion to wear on a daily basis. CHARITY

F

lip Flop Compassionate Zambia (FFCZ) is a nonprofit making organisation in Zambia; FFCZ is registered with the Registrar of Societies, under the Ministry of Home Affairs. It was registered on 14th December 2011. Our mission is poverty reduction, improve health, education, comfort and well-being of the disadvantaged Zambian children, and to provide skills training to Zambian youths and young mothers with the goal of empowering individuals towards selfsufficiency.

Our approach is to provide immediate Relief and intermediate care in the long term. To achieve this, outlined below, are activities under our practice: Provide basic necessities such as; footwear, clothing, food security for orphans and vulnerable children, school supplies and tuitions, health, sanitation, and sporting equipment. Support organizations that educate and enrich the community through dance, drama & team sportsmanship. Aid in the provision of vocational skills training for women and Youths so that they become self sustainable We believe social change can flourish when people are empowered by meeting their basic needs and affording them the opportunity to direct their own lives. As Flip Flop Compassionate Zambia, we are dedicated to improving the lives of Orphans and Vulnerable Children by providing necessities for living.

88 THE GLOBAL ZAMBIAN

May/June 2013

Through extensive relationships with Zambian recipients and partner institutions, FFCZ is able to help realize the dreams of innovative Zambian social workers. We bridge the gap to help our recipients and partners achieve their goals of educating, housing, and caring for Zambian children, by providing in the form of; shoes, clothing, food, exercise books, text books, pens & pencils or other supplies. We aim to foster long-term change in Zambian communities by supporting already established Orphanages and Community Schools, Institutions which carry out health awareness programs and provide job skills training to Children and young adults. Many of the staff, Executive Committee (EC) members and volunteers of FFCZ have extensive experience in programs supporting orphans because they served as staff, EC members and/or volunteers of Flip Flop Foundation (FFF), a US-based public charity which ran similar programs in Zambia until the charity closed at the end of 2011. At that point, seeing a gap in the provision of basic necessities to the organizations that were previously supported by FFF, FFCZ was born to help fill the gap by taking on some of those programs.

T

oday the Flip Flop Compassionate Zambia is supporting 6 orphanages and 12 community schools in Zambia and our goal is to reach out to 50 orphanages and 100 community schools by the year 2018. This can only be achieved with your support.

QUOTE OF THE MONTH “If you as parents cut corners, your children will too. If you lie they will too. If you spend all your money on yourselves and tithe no portion of it for charities, colleges, churches, synagogues, and civic causes, your children won’t either. And if parents snicker at racial and gender jokes, another generation will pass on the poison adults still have not had the courage to snuff out.”

FASHION POLICE BEST DRESSED The host of the ZAMAs Chishala Chitoshi is our pick for best dressed on the night with his black on black ensemble, fitted suit and bow tie, was on point

With the first ever Zambian Music Awards having taken place, it was only natural that TGZ have the fashion police take a look at what the guests wore on the red carpet. Who was our best dresses and worst?

WE ALSO LIKED The couple on the left not only looked adorable but we also liked what they wore. The yellow and black leopard print inspired dress fitted her well and the black clutch tamed the print. The black tie and waistcoat with a pin-stripped shirt was a good choice for the gentleman, but we will have to serve you a citation for the wrinkled black jeans. A pair of standard trousers preferably matching the waistcoat would have completed the outfit well. The gentleman on the left got his outfit right from head to toe, perhaps had he buttoned up the jacket, it would have appeared neater, otherwise we are liking the dark gray suit on black tie and white shirt.

UNIQUE OUTFIT The unique outfit of this month goes to none other than Michael Zulu. This outfit is unique because he added the western smart suit and combined it with a traditional accessory, seen mainly worn by the Chiefs of Zambia. Fashion innovation in the works. We give it a thumbs up

WORST DRESSED We could not ignore this suit even if we wanted to. The salmon pinkish red automatically draws your attention but unfortunately for all the wrong reasons. The suit is two sizes too big, the tie looks like it is not sure if it wants to be a cravat or a tie either way a decision needs to be made, and we have made it. Young man we give you a fine, for even considering wearing this. Nevertheless, this is how a suit like this can be made to look good and even compete for best dressed. The colour choice be it bold, can work if it was a slim fitted suit(Ozwald Boateng), same goes for the tie although a black slim tie would be a better choice with a fitted black shirt and the shoes stay the same. VoilĂ a whole new you.
