BRINGING ‘CHRISTMAS WISHES’ THIS SEASON Kauai Chorale plans two holiday shows

T

his Christmas season, Kauai Chorale is offering everyone an opportunity to experience enough joy, hope and peace to take a little bit home with them and into their new year. Performances of “Christmas Wishes” are set to take place at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 19 the Kauai Community College Performance Arts Center in Lihue and at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 20 at the St. Regis Hotel ballroom in Princeville. The chorale is directed by Lois Ricciardi and features ac-

companist Virginia Shepherd. After they herald the season with a medley of Christmas favorites, Kauai Chorale will delight the audience with “The Reluctant Dragon,” an English entertainment with words by David Grant and music by John Rutter. Guest Kauai musicians joining the chorale include Jill Simonsen on keyboard, Dan Spriggs on percussion, and the Kauai Chorale string quartet. “Dragon” is a fantasy adventure story starring a boy, a dragon, St. George and a nar-

rator. What makes this year’s production so special is that the Kauai Chorale performed the same show 10 years ago, and three of the performers are returning. However, Beorn Chantara who played the little boy, is now playing St. George! Arnold Meister, who was St. George, is now the Narrator. Domi Ragsac is returning for an encore performance as the dragon, and the new “boy” on the block is Savannah Hubbard. There will be some other humorous and touching

KONOHIKI SERVES ‘ H AWAII WAY’ K DENNIS FUJIMOTO TGIFR!DAY

onohiki Seafoods is open in Hanamaulu offering sashimi, poke, ahi filets, Hawaiian food, plate lunches, bento, sushi, and ice. Kyle Oshima, one of four principles heading the takeout eatery, handles the fish duty, both wholesale and retail. He is joined by Warren Racca who takes care of the kitchen, Miles Kawamoto

who oversees the sushi, and Jared “Toyo” Moriyama. All four come with backgrounds in the culinary business, having worked for establishments like Conrads and Wong to the Sheraton Kauai Resort, Oshima said. Konohiki Seafoods offers “kid-sized” bento for the elementary students heading off to school. In compliance with the state’s Department

of Health, the bento changes to more adult-sized offerings as the clock nears the lunch hour. The flavor of Konohiki Seafoods’ food is steeped in community, and the support it receives from everyone who comes in, alluding to the definition of “konohiki,” which is a headman of a land division or ahupuaa who administered

Oshima said the crew of 14, including the principles, are carried over from Ara’s. “This is not a one-man operation,” Oshima said. “It takes a lot of people to make this work, and we have a lot of good people who help us. When I took over, I got to meet other fishermen because we sell

ice. They help us, too.” Konohiki Seafoods offers more than poke and seafood. Their shelves are filled with local favorites like ginger fried chicken, fried shrimp, crispy wun tun and sushi. “We keep working on trying to give people the items they ask for,” Oshima

ary Wong of Creations by June said he spent time sleeping near the airport (you can’t sleep at the airport) before catching the plane to Kauai for the Kauai Museum Christmas craft fair. Wong was one of more than two dozen craft vendors set up behind the Kauai Museum for the annual fundraiser. Food vendors included the traditional Hawaiian plates by the Kaiola Canoe Club. Elena Camat has grown her offering of Chinese pretzel flavors from the days she sold the crunchy delicacy as a fundraiser for her son’s soccer trip.

“We have them at Pono Market,” Camat said. “And we still do the First Saturday event hosted by the Kapaa Business Association.” Harvey Kinoshita said he met Mike Kim while on a trip to Honolulu and took advantage of the craft fair to reunite with his buddy who offered bamboo products, including an outdoor broom which were eagerly snatched up by customers. Kauai Made and Kauai Grown vendors will be at the annual Holiday Fair from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday hosted by the Kauai County Farm Bureau at Kauai Community College.
