ALTA PETO SUMMER TERM 2021

SUMMER 2021 / SHREWSBURY HOUSE SCHOOL / 1

WELCOME FROM OUR EXECUTIVE HEAD What a pleasure it has been to resume many of our usual activities this term. Fixtures have taken place for all year groups, much to the delight of the boys, and a full extra-curriculum programme has run throughout the term offering a broad range of experiences for the boys to try, as well as some firm favourites. It is fantastic to see that Cookery remains as popular as ever, alongside the creative, sporting and musical opportunities. Music has brought our school back to life and the rich variety of genres we hear each week is food for the soul. Whether it be a Year 4 rock band or SHS Singers performing ‘Give Me Wings’, the buildings have reverberated with harmony and vibrancy each day. Each week, we have been treated to many exceptional solo performances and I am always struck by the confidence with which the boys perform. Be it on the sports field or stage, these young men develop a self-belief and trust in themselves which enables them to perform at the highest level in each year group. Activities Week brought such a wide range of new opportunities for the boys to engage in collaborative work, fostering communication and creativity as they put on a ‘Play in a Day’, built rafts or solved puzzles. Their enjoyment is so evident and we are all buoyed by their energy and enthusiasm as we guide them through their precious prep school years.

Our Assemblies have provided the platform to explore some key issues this term. We have discussed friendships and what they mean to us. A very relevant presentation on diversity, inclusion and discrimination helped each of us to reflect on how we live our values and support each other. Having a shared responsibility for our environment and our community resonates strongly at Shrewsbury House and is evident through the many charity and eco initiatives led by the boys themselves as they seek to help others. As we have returned to a closer version of ‘life as usual’ after so many months of change, we have considered how we emerge stronger, more adaptable and resilient, as well as what we hold dear. Social interaction is certainly something we value highly and I am ever hopeful that we will be able to welcome our wider community – parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters – back to school in the next academic year to share in all that we offer. For now, I hope you enjoy a flavour of the many wonderful events of this term through this summer edition of Alta Peto.

MRS JOANNA HUBBARD EXECUTIVE HEAD

External examinations INDEPENDENT PROJECT QUALIFICATION Following the Year 8 exams, boys took part in The IPQ (Independent Project Qualification). This is similar to the EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) completed in Sixth Form, though obviously on a smaller scale. In essence, pupils choose a theme, and over time a question – usually posing a problem to be fixed or researched. Once that is in place, the planning stages occur, much like mini project management. The research and review stage then follows, with pupils looking at websites and commenting on provenance and reliability of sources and interviewing people as their project takes shape. The third stage involves the actual project. The project can take many forms: discursive essay, computer programme/game/PowerPoint, book – the list is endless. Finally comes the reflection, which involves pupils looking at what they have learned about themselves, their skills and the topic. Then the project is presented to the class. Last year, we were a pilot school to introduce this new initiative and we are delighted with the opportunity it brings for our senior boys to synthesise their learning and gain new skills ahead of their transition to senior school. Some of the questions the boys posed by themselves were: • How can the use of behavioural economics be used to influence someone’s buying habits? • To what extent can we attribute evolution only to natural causes? • How have advances in prosthetics contributed to success in disabled sports? • At which point does genome editing become unethical?

Activity week

YEAR 3 The Year 3 boys engaged in a wide range of fun and educational activities during Activity Week. From swimming galas to concerts, outings to workshops, they had a very busy and enjoyable time! The trip to Bocketts Farm was undoubtedly a highlight, with animals to stroke and a tractor ride too. The boys embraced the opportunity to partake in some very different types of learning.

Seeing the birds of prey was amazing. I enjoyed learning about the different birds and watching them fly. Some were really cute. Laser tag was cool. ROBERT COPELAND

SUMMER 2021 / SHREWSBURY HOUSE SCHOOL / 21

I loved the laser tag at Almshouse. It was so fun teaming up with my friends and trying to catch the other team. Indoor caving was also fun and quite a challenge! HANS CHRISTIAN KIER-HELMO

22 / SHREWSBURY HOUSE SCHOOL / SUMMER 2021

Indoor caving was ace and it was really fun trying to be a detective and solve a mystery. YEAR 4 Year 4 boys enjoyed a range of activities at the Almshouse Lane sports ground during Activity Week. They ventured to Hampton Court for a fascinating tour of the Palace, as well as enjoying a picnic in Bushy Park. A highly engaging visit from a Performance Poet, a detective day and interactive Roman workshops completed their week.

The detective day was really fun. We managed to work it out in the end but it wasn’t easy. AVIK GAGLANI

24 / SHREWSBURY HOUSE SCHOOL / SUMMER 2021

YEAR 5 The Year 5 boys enjoyed teambuilding at Almshouse Lane sports ground before enjoying a Year 6 performance of play in a day. They visited the Transport Museum at Brooklands where the guides commented on the enthusiasm of the boys and how engaged they were during the very interesting tour. The whole year group came together to produce a spectacular version of the classic ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’, where they worked together superbly, making props, directing scenes or acting the parts to produce a wonderful spectacle for the watching Year 4s. Breakdancing, a visit from the animal workshop and sculpture building added further excitement to the week.

I enjoyed seeing the Formula 1 cars. It was also amazing to go in the pressure chamber where they could make any weather conditions happen. ARTHUR TOLSON

SUMMER 2021 / SHREWSBURY HOUSE SCHOOL / 25

Brooklands was fun and we got to go on a Concorde too! SAM GATES-SUMNER

26 / SHREWSBURY HOUSE SCHOOL / SUMMER 2021

Seeing the animals was cool. It was nice to be able to touch them, I liked the bigger animals best like the snakes and the spiders. YEAR 6 The Year 6 gave a superb performance of ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ where the boys made all the props themselves and gave a rousing performance to Year 5. Boys engaged in the informative presentations from Zoolab and the Mad Science Company. They were blessed with good weather as they travelled to the coast to West Wittering for a day looking at coastal erosion features and exploring the sand dunes. There was even time for an ice cream, sandcastle building and a game of football on the beach before coming back to school. The week finished with a House Cricket Competition with a BBQ lunch and sculpture building.

GABRIEL MUNGAVIN

SUMMER 2021 / SHREWSBURY HOUSE SCHOOL / 27

I enjoyed play in a day. We have never done anything like that before and everyone was involved. Mad Science also did some cool experiments and being able to go to the beach on a school day was nice on a really sunny day. REUBEN GALAUN

YEAR 7 TRIP LAND AND WAVE TRIP Extracts from the account by Peter Itani. Year 7 set off for an action packed adventure to Land and Wave in Dorset, with the help of Mr Rush, Mr Greenwood, Madame Toussaint, Mr Smart and Mrs Baker. When we arrived we had no time to waste and we jumped in our wetsuits and dived into the waterpark. On Tuesday the groups headed to the sea in Swanage where we went bodyboarding. It was exhilarating, a great skill to learn as well as it being packed with fun. We also did team building which was a superb activity and helped us understand how to work in teams while getting to know those around us. On Wednesday the whole of Year 7 headed to the wood where we made fires and learnt the skills of the woodlands. On the evening we had the time of our lives, we started by crabbing and although not everybody was able to catch a crab we still had a great time. By this time we had built up a good appetite, so we had fish and chips at the coast; it was the perfect meal to quench our hunger after a busy day in the woods. The next day we went coasteering, we were jumping off rocks and into the sea; it was definitely a fulfilling activity. Later we went pioneering where we had to come up with ideas of how to make a catapult then construct it which at first was challenging but gave us fun like we have never had before.

On Friday we all were excited to get to our warm houses and see our families again but we had one more challenge waiting for us – a walk to Corfe which was long but there was a reward (that none of us could resist), an ice cream waiting at the top of the castle. This trip was everything we could have asked for after an unusual year. We would like to thank all the members of the SHS staff, the Land and Wave staff for all their help and support.

YEAR 8 LEAVERS’ PROGRAMME The Year 8 boys had a busy end of term engaging in a full Leavers’ Programme. The pleasure of finishing their final exams meant they were able to enjoy a wide range of educational and fun activities before they move onto their senior schools. The boys showed off their moves in a ‘Street dance’ workshop, led by professional Street Dance instructors. A highly competitive House Cricket competition took place at Almshouse Lane, which was played in an excellent spirit throughout as well as a great afternoon of bowling. Our leavers had a chance to showcase their production and acting skills as they learned all about film making, including effective sound effects, creating an exciting plot and editing footage. In groups, they created several short ‘films in a day’ and the winners received their very own Oscar at the end day presentation. The week included several talks of great value ahead of a move to senior school and the transition to the older teenage years. These included ‘Gambling and Gaming,’ an impactful presentation which was also shared with parents during the evening. They heard from a member of staff from King’s College School Wimbledon about adapting to life in senior schools and from local Youthwork Charity – Oxygen in Kingston, who shared information on keeping safe when out and about.

32 / SHREWSBURY HOUSE SCHOOL / SUMMER 2021

YEAR 8 LAND AND WAVE TRIP By Otis Clark, Year 8 pupil. This Year, the Year 8s went to Dorset for their Activity Week. The instructors were ready for us and put us into two groups. Group 1 did Nightline, an activity which involved putting a blindfold on and only using verbal communication to complete the task, Group 2 undertook a climbing activity. The evening activity was crabbing, which was a lot of fun as we caught many crabs. Day 2 we enjoyed the challenge of Bushcraft. The day was full of fun and activities, which included axe-throwing, archery, making fires and knife work. The instructors made jam donuts, while we did a full-scale manhunt. Special mentions go to Rafael Aram for beating the teachers at axe-throwing and Eric Chen and Otis Clark’s superb archery skills. The evening saw England play Czech Republic and thanks to Raheem Sterling, England managed to get through to the Round of 16. Day 3 was a beach day, with the boys kayaking, which was physically challenging but fun. The boys also did raft building, where rafts were built from ropes and barrels. Day 4 saw us go on a peaceful coastal walk around Corfe Castle to learn the history of Corfe Castle. When the boys finished their walk, Group 1 went and did coasteering. This was arguably the best activity as it saw the boys climb to extreme heights and jump into the sea. Group 2 enjoyed Nightline. The evening activity saw the boys do crabbing again. This time there were many more crabs and Daniel Adams caught a fish with 3 crabs. Day 5 was our boys’ last day, with everyone going to a water park. This was a great activity for the last ever Activity Week at this school. There were many splashes and laughs as the boys prepared to go home. The journey was full of songs and chatter as we headed up north back to school. Once we arrived, we were greeted by Mrs Hubbard. This was a great trip for everyone and I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Land and Wave. Thank you to Mr Francis for organising this trip and to Mr Spires, Mr Sims, Mr Driscoll and Mr Lennon for taking their time to take us on a wonderful trip to the coast. To conclude... This balanced programme of both fun and educational activities has helped prepare the boys for their transition to senior school and has also provided many lasting memories with their friends which they will treasure for years to come.

MUSIC COLOURS

MUSIC SOIRÉE

Congratulations to Freddie Mundell, Year 8 who was presented with his Music Colours.

The Music Soirée in May provided the opportunity for boys to showcase their wide array of musical talents, from Jazz to Strings and Brass to Saxophone, beautifully finished with the SHS Singers who sang ‘Give Me Wings’ by John Rutter.

CHICKS AND BUTTERFLIES HATCH As part of the Year 5 Life Cycles topic, there was a buzz of excitement at the arrival of chicken eggs! Transferred carefully to their warm incubator, the boys kept a close eye on the live webcam in hopes of seeing them hatch. Their patience was rewarded when they were greeted by five lively chicks (at first guess, 3 boys and 2 girls!) and more of their brothers and sisters followed soon after. Once they became more comfortable in their new home, Year 5 had the opportunity to hold the chicks in their science lessons. The boys were also had the opportunity to watch butterflies hatch from their cocoons and then release them in the playground.

YEAR 3 AND YEAR 4 SUMMER CONCERTS There were some lovely performances ranging from massed trumpets to solo piano, passing guitars, saxophones, clarinets, violins and drums during the Year 3 and Year 4 Summer Concerts. The Year 3 boys ended their concert with an energetic rendition of ‘Colonel Hathi’s March’ from The Jungle Book. The Year 4 concert culminated in a fun and engaging delivery of ‘The Bare Necessities’ also from The Jungle Book, with all boys taking part. Well done to both year groups, two wonderful concerts!

ECO-COMMITTEE Miss Mallory, who leads the Eco-Committee with Mr Eaves held an assembly about the environment and considered ways in which we can help our local environment as well as wider global issues. She shared the impressive work they have undertaken since their inaugural meeting in 2019, including collecting ideas from the whole school community and raising people’s awareness of sustainability.

The Eco-Committee are working towards a silver Eco Award and have relaunched the milk bottle top collection. In addition they have launched a new challenge to highlight the need for biodiversity and the importance of nurturing our green spaces. Each class was set the challenge of growing a sunflower from seed. They started life in the form rooms and were nurtured through the early stages by Form and Vice-Captains.

Projects involved included milk bottle top collections which are recycled into playground surfaces for schools, cork collections which raised funds for a water aid charity and the ‘Just One Tree’ initiative which has supported new tree planting in areas of deforestation. MOSQUE COMPETITION In TPR this term, Year 6 have been studying the religion of Islam. As an extension of their Islamic studies, they were challenged with producing mini model Islamic mosques showing the physical structure and labelling the different aspects of the mosque, which are unique to Islamic worship. The boys had the option of crafting a mosque from various materials such as cardboard, clay or Lego. Alternatively, they could create an animated or Minecraft model mosque online. The boys rose to the challenge and produced outstanding model mosques that ranged from video tours with Minecraft villagers as a guide, amazing animation and sound effects to minutely detailed and vibrant clay, cardboard, styrofoam, jewelled and craft tissue paper models. We had an excellent response and a large number of impressive models arrived online and at school, at the start of term, from all the boys in Year 6. The physical model mosques were displayed in the New Block corridor during the summer term.

CRICKET

SHS HOUSE CRICKET 2021

Every pupil was afforded the chance to play inter- and intraschool cricket matches throughout the term. Week by week the boys improved to at an ever higher level of performance, both in respect of their sporting skills and prowess and in their tactical understanding of the game. Couple this with a focus on the core sporting values connected with the cricket and the term was deemed a resounding success. From the first-time softball exponents in Year 3 to the undefeated U11C team, and on to the hard-hitting and fast-developing Year 8 1st XI cricket team (and every team in between) – well done all!

Following the incredible success of the new and improved House Cricket event launched in September, the 2021 version was eagerly anticipated. House Cricket this term did not disappoint! With six separate events running throughout the term, the final result was not established until the last ball in the Year 7 event was bowled! Hard hitting, committed running, determined bowling and energetic fielding were in evidence throughout. Add to that the pride the boys have in their House and you have the makings of a fun, competitive and meaningful sporting competition – awesome, boys!

Special congratulations to those cricketers that achieved landmark performances of either scoring over 50 runs or contributing five or more wickets in a single match: Batting (over 50 runs): Louis Wood 1st XI, Henry Hulme (x2) 1st XI, Max Turner 2nd XI, Connor Lloyd U12B and Charlie Hulme U11A Bowling (5 or more wickets): Louis Wood 1st XI and Alexander Harley 2nd XI

SHS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP 2021

SHS CRICKET SKILLS AWARDS 2021

To support competitive experience for our younger pupils we were very pleased to launch the inaugural SHS County Championship. This new event enabled us the chance to offer an increased number of structured matches for boys in evenly selected, mixed-ability teams. Competitive, supportive and fun; this event proved a real hit for the boys in Year 3, Year 4 and Year 6.

Cricket requires the mastery of technical skills related to the varied actions and roles within the sport. This mastery comes from good coaching and lots of practice! To underline the importance of this skills development, to create a strong foundation for our younger pupils and to evidence for them the progress they can make over their early years at SHS, we were very pleased to introduce the SHS Cricket Skills Awards. Open to all boys in Year 3 and Year 4, this new programme of assessment saw the boys perform a variety of cricket skills within a controlled environment to establish their current cricketing skills. All boys achieved the bronze award in both years (well done!), with many in each cohort pushing on to silver and (for a few) the gold award – super skills!

The House Event was delivered over six year-group events of great energy. The noise generated by the boys in cheering their friends and peers was impressive! Considering how long it has been since most of the boys have swum, their performance and respect of the event was marvellous, and a great credit to them. Years 7&8 Years 5&6 Years 3&4 Total Result

TENNIS So wonderful it was to welcome back tennis to the fold at SHS. Teams from Years 4–8 competed with great determination over a series of friendly matches with our friends at local schools. The boys served, volleyed and smashed their way to enjoyable evenings throughout the term and all concerned can be very happy with their efforts and commitment to one of our core summer sports.

We were so pleased with the way the whole school supported our campaign. I went on holiday to the beach last summer and saw the lifeboats saving lives. Thank you SHS. ROBERT RICHARDS

RNLI

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK

Josh Jacobs and Robert Richards launched an appeal to support the RNLI. The initiative was to fill a small jam jar with coins. A very impressive £357.00 was raised for this worthwhile cause and the money collected will assist in purchasing essential kit for the thousands of volunteers across the country.

The theme this year for Mental Health Awareness week was nature, and the boys enjoyed the opportunity to share some of the ways they enjoy spending time in nature. It was wonderful to see Year 7 spend some time lying on the All Weather Surface enjoying some cloud spotting and listening to birds sing at the start of their day. Boys also planted sunflower seeds as part of appreciating nature and the Eco-committee project – ‘growing plants from seeds’.
