There you’ll find the TGCSA staff busy watching bills introduced in Nashville that might impact your journey and seeking your input for taking the right position of support or opposition.

ALL ABOARD! It’s the conductor’s call indicating that the train is preparing to leave the station. This past year the TGCSA had a successful journey and I want to encourage you to travel further in 2015 as Randy Stepherson dons the conductor’s cap.

Membership dues buy your ticket to board the TGCSA train. We are on the right track, headed in the right direction and our individual cars have lots to offer.

You’ll also find several very nice cars that house the annual convention.

You’ll want to spend some time there attending education sessions, sampling new products, and visiting with other passengers from across the state to share ideas for best practices.

Be sure to stop by the Tennessee Grocers’ Education Foundation car. It is the second largest one of its kind in the United States. There you can learn how to help raise funds for scholarships and how your employees’ family members can apply for awards.

See our concierge about letting the TGCSA handle your coupon redemptions and other services that we can provide. Once you’re on the train, why not take advantage of all it has to offer.

At your leisure, make your way back to the Caboose and feel free to read a few publications on your trip. We have the Volunteer Grocer magazine as well as the TGCSA newsletter with industry alerts related to legislation, fraudulent coupons, and other topics that you’ll only see if you are a passenger.

TGEF Chairman’s Message

It has been my great honor to serve as Chairman of the Tennessee Grocers Education Foundation this past year. In 2015 TGEF’s total scholarship awards surpassed $3.4 million since our founding in 1985, and our efforts have benefitted literally thousands of young people.

Our efforts to take the U.S.’s second largest grocers education foundation to even greater heights continue apace. I hope you will be able to participate in some or all of our fundraising events in 2015. Some of the major activities planned this year are the Middle Tennessee Golf Outing on May 6th at the Hermitage Golf Course. That 36-year old tradition is followed the next day by the third annual Middle Tennessee Breaking Clays for College shooting tournament at the Nashville Gun Club. On July 8 the Dandridge Golf Club will host the East Tennessee Golf outing. We then travel to Tunica, Mississippi for the West TN Golf Outing at Tunica National on October

21 and the Breaking Clays Shooting Outing on October 22.

In 2014 these TGEF events raised $204,323, money that directly affected young people in Tennessee’s food industry. Your participation in 2015 will help us to do even more to educate the future leaders of the food industry.

I hope you will join me at the TGCSA Convention in Chattanooga June 4th and 5th to meet with fellow members and learn about what your association is doing for you.

As I reflect on my freshman year here at TGCSA, I am struck by a theme that runs through our association. It is a theme that speaks to strength and direction. The theme is pulling together.

My very first impressions of the membership of TGCSA were made when I interviewed for the position originated and defined by the great Wes Ball in 1977.

What I saw were business leaders from divergent operations - large and small, convenience store and grocery store - who had a common goal: the future success of TGCSA. In our Board of Directors and TGEF’s Board of Trustees I have seen an even larger and more diverse group

At our East, Middle and West Tennessee TGEF fundraising events I have seen the statewide food industry pull together to have some fun and invest in its future.

The support provided by our participants has helped us pull away from other state food industry associations and toward a more capable and better equipped next generation of leaders.

In our efforts to defend our members and advance our interests in the government relations arena, I have been impressed and encouraged by our members’ willingness to get involved. Pulling together to make a strong showing at our Day on the Hill in February, TGCSA members made a strong impression on lawmakers as they promoted good ideas (restoring vendors’ compensation for collecting sales taxes, increasing the automatic markup on cigarettes) and battled bad ideas (the bottle bill, a state minimum wage, anti-GMO

labeling). The willingness to get involved and contact legislators as we have worked these issues has made a big difference in our association’s effectiveness.

In June we will have another opportunity to pull together for the betterment of our industry. The symbol for our 37th TGCSA Convention & Expo is a locomotive engine. This is appropriate since our hallmark event is being held for the first time in Tennessee’s legendary railroad city, Chattanooga.

But it is also fitting as a symbol of pulling together. We will pull our industry forward with excellent opportunities to network, to learn, to expand our contacts and resources… and to have some fun! Chattanooga is a wonderful place to visit, and I hope you will come and find out why.

Know Your Food Code Tennessee’s new Food Code – adopted by law in 2014 – goes into effect on July 1, 2015. In conjunction with the Tennessee Department of Agriculture Division of Consumer & Industry Services, Volunteer Grocer is pleased to present this ongoing series of information you need to know to stay compliant. This issue’s topic: Date Marking*.

Why is Date Marking Important?

Date marking is a means of controlling the growth of Listeria monocytogenes.

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that continues to grow at refrigerator temperatures.

Date marking is a procedure to ensure food is discarded before these bacteria can cause foodborne illness.

What FOODS must be Date Marked?

Exemptions from Date

What if I FREEZE the food?

• Freezing food stops the date marking clock but does not reset it.

• If a food is stored at 41º F for two days and then frozen at 0º F, it can be safely stored at 41º F for five

more days after removal from the freezer.

• The freezing date and the thawing date must be provided on

the container along with the preparation date to indicate of

how many of the original seven days have been used.

If food is not properly dated, it must be used or discarded within 24 hours.

What if I COMBINE foods that were opened on DIFFERENT DATES?

It is best to AVOID mixing different batches of foods.

If different containers of foods are combined, the date of the oldest ingredient becomes the reference date.

For example:

If today is Wednesday, and you are mixing

salad prepared on Monday with salad

prepared on Tuesday, the salad would

be labeled as prepared on Monday.
