DR. LAUREN PRUNER, CHIROPRACTOR

A wellness centre for all The old stereotype of the “cracking your bones” chiropractor is long gone. Today chiropractors treat the entire body. Dr. Lauren Pruner, along with her husband, Dr. Oscar Alba, operate Tavistock Chiropractic and Wellness Centre which opened April 9, 2018. It serves as a second location for their Breslau business which was launched a year prior, in April of 2017. But what most people don’t know is that along with their normal practice of chiropractic care and acupuncture treatments, Dr. Pruner is now certified as an animal chiropractor. Following graduation from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC) in Toronto in June of 2018, she embarked on a 6-month course with the Veterinary Chirporactic Learning Centre in Brant County. She previously earned her undergraduate degree with a Bachelor of Arts in Kinesiology at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo. “I’ve always had a love for animals,” she said. Her family had dogs and she rode horses as a youth, “but had no idea that (Animal Chiropractic) was a thing,” she added. During her studies, she shadowed Dr. Jennifer Heick, DC of Waterloo. “She had been doing it for a long time (since 1994),” Lauren said. “She’s the one who got me interested in it.” There were many handson sessions with horses and dogs and much opportunity to improve her knowledge. Lauren grew up in Toronto, first in Riverdale and then moving to Scarborough at age 8 with her parents, Anne, a yoga therapist, and Terry, a professor at Centennial College. Lauren has younger twin brothers, Brendan and Cameron. During her high school days, Lauren played a lot of volleyball. After injuring her back and having no relief from the back pain, she was helped by a chiropractor. “She completely fixed me up,” Lauren said, “and I have

It was at CMCC that she met her husband, Dr. Oscar Alba. The couple was married on October 13, 2018. The couple’s business also includes the services of a Registered Massage Therapist Kaitlyn Hough in Tavistock and Cayley Ziegler, RMT and Nisha Patel, Physiotherapist in Breslau. This is a great supplement to the chiropractors’ use of a non invasive, hands-on health care discipline that focuses on the neuromusculoskeletal system that includes nerves, muscles, bones, and ligaments. With the addition of Animal Chiropractic Services, Dr. Pruner is available for in-office treatments for small

animals but also travels to barns and stables to treat horses. “This does not replace veterinary care,” Dr. Pruner stressed. “It’s done in collaboration,” she added. “They have a lot of the same injuries that humans have.” She explained how dogs can become injured from a collar or by jumping off the couch or out of a vehicle. “They’re

resilient creatures,” she said, but sometimes they are injured and the owners don’t know it except for a small limp or favouring to one side or the other. Feeling for joint restrictions, swelling and muscle tension, many of these injuries can usually be resolved with adjustments, soft tissue therapy and rehabilitation.

Conditions with horses can sometimes present with a change in behaviour, limping or start short striding when exercising. Whatever the cause, Dr. Pruner likes to keep an open line of communication with the veterinarian. Because humans and animals cannot be treated at the same time, Dr. Pruner has set aside Tuesday afternoon and evening, between 3 and 7 p.m., for her animal care. She is currently working in the Tavistock office on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Fridays from 1-6 p.m. Acupuncture is another area of treatment that the Tavistock clinic offers. Dr. Pruner explained that there are two types of acupuncture, Chinese Medicine and Bio-Mechanical. She uses electroacupuncture. “It’s becoming more popular,” she said, and almost all patients are offered the treatment if they desire. “It gets deeper into the tissues,” she said, and is great for muscle injuries or for back and hip pain. Whatever your needs, the Tavistock Chiropractic and Wellness Centre provides chiropractic, acupuncture, physical rehabilitation, and custom orthotics services to the area. The clinic’s 1,100 sq ft. office space is equipped with four treatment rooms to help meet all of their patient’s musculoskeletal needs.
