TAVISTOCK GAZETTE v WEDNESDAY, JUNE 22, 2011
Two local teams surpassed their fundraising goals and reached medal status at the Woodstock Relay for Life on Friday, June 17th at College Avenue Secondary School in Woodstock. The Community 4-H Club ‘Delectable Dozen 4-H Bakery’ Team was designated as a “silver” team while “The Ladies of the Night” achieved “bronze.” For the past year the 4-H team has been busy with fundraising at events including the Train and Nostalgia shows with the Woodstock Agricultural Ladies, Embro Fair with kids’ rides, Roth Park Clean Up, Jakeman’s Pancake House, Men’s Club dinner, Roadside clean up with Hickson Lions and Tavistock Men’s Club, a garage sale, collecting pop cans and members collecting pledges. This year they achieved their goal of being a Silver Team raising a total of $7,796.00. They also received the award for the Best Decorated Tent and Team Spirit. The Co-Captains of the team were Hailee Verhoeven and Janneke Van Den Nieuwelaar. In the past 5 years at the Relay, the Community 4-H Club has raised $23,246.00 in the effort to make cancer history. Within the 4-H club, awards were presented for the most fundraising (Murray Bruce), most online pledges collected (Luke Ward), most off line pledges
collected (Trent Jones) and the member raising the most money overall went to Hailee Verhoeven. While doing the Relay for Life, one of the members said, “I am going to purchase a necklace string and collect a bead for each lap I do.” Another was impressed by the speakers at the opening ceremonies.“That was an amazing speaker who talked about his experience with cancer for the past 6 months. I am going to get more pledges next year.” Still another asked, “did you see that small child who was a survivor of cancer?” And finally, one team member said, “I am glad that I participated in this club to be part of the Relay for Life.” The 4-H members have been learning for the past several weeks about communication etiquette with e-mails, texting, cell phones and Facebook. They also had an opportunity to work on impromptu speaking during the meetings. Members learned more about 4-H opportunities as well as community opportunities like the Fair Ambassador at Tavistock, Embro and Woodstock, and the Bale Decorating Contest at the Woodstock Fair. “It was interesting to learn the proper etiquette for the different types of technology communication we use everyday and how our emotions can be interpreted,” said Stan Temming. “I also had a
