Welcome to the latest edition of our Freedom newsletter.

In more ways than one, the grass is looking a little greener and the outlook a little brighter.

For many, that has meant getting back outdoors and enjoying the Great British countryside. Looking at some of our recent customer stories, TGA users have taken in the fresh air and scenery at the likes of the Yorkshire Dales, Peak District and the Cotswolds.

We’ve taken the opportunity to get out and about as well. This spring, we spent a week filming in the wonderful Lake District, highlighting just some of the 48 fantastic accessible routes there. We wanted to show, no

matter what level of mobility, there are incredible views to be experienced and memories to be created. You can find out where we went and more information on pages 4 to 7.

From inspiring surroundings to inspiring people. Over the next few pages, you’ll also find some uplifting stories from TGA customers. We talk to Georgina Wasdall, who has found the WHILL Model C to be the one chair that truly represents her as a young model. We also speak with Maxine Ellis, who founded her own ME support group after struggling to find one herself

when she most needed it and has since seen it grow and flourish.

Imposing peaks, serene lakes, diverse wildlife – the Lake District boasts some of the UK’s most enchanting locations.

Best of all, many of these hotspots are accessible.

experience some of the finest vistas the UK has to offer, TGA visited seven routes for an upcoming video (which you’ll find on our YouTube and social media channels).

There are 48 ‘Miles Without Stiles’ routes across the national park for people with limited mobility, graded for ‘all’, ‘many’ and ‘some’. For ‘all’ indicates the route has a smooth surface and acute gradient; for ‘many’ routes are suitable for assisted wheelchairs on a rougher stone surface and ‘for some’ routes are suitable for more confident wheelchair and scooter users – in some cases, only scooters with off-road capabilities such as the Breeze S4, Supersport and Vita X.

What we found was a great variety of locations, from quiet esturies and woodlands, to historic buildings and stunning viewpoints.

We’re not the only ones to have been in awe of the UK’s national parks recently, though. Some of our customers have noted the benefits of venturing off the beaten track.

“Being able to drive up into the Dales, roll myself up to the base of Ribblehead Viaduct on my WHILL Model C, inadvertently herd some sheep... it was

utter bliss, and nicely filled my need for travel without actually having to go too far,” Hannah Barham-Brown said .

“If you think the Peak District is completely inaccessible to get to those views at the top then I’m so pleased to tell you that it is very much possible,” Georgina Wasdall adds.“To be able to get to what felt like the top of the world, was nothing less than incredible and just simply being there gives you a sense of being, a sense of living. Friar’s Crag, Keswick Located in the northern lakes, Friar’s Crag offers one of the most awe-inspiring views in the Lake District.

Reachable via a pathway, tarmac surface and unchallenging woodland, you are rewarded with a bench view of Ullswater below, imposing peaks on all sides and ospreys who have made the area home.

Whether you’re in the northern lakes or on the west coast, there are accessible routes to be discovered wherever you are in the Lake District...

For a path less travelled, the coastal town of Ravenglass is a hidden gem. On one side, there are unspoilt views of the estuary on the undervisited west Lake Distrct coast, on the other, a trip to see the Roman bath house ruins which is a short journey from town.

Broughton-in-Furness A charming town on the southern edge of the National Park, Broughton-in-Furness boasts a quirky market square and surrounding architecture.

Follow the route out of town and rest by the tarn.

Pooley Bridge

Penrith

In 2015, Pooley Bridge fell victim to destructive flooding caused by Storm Desmond. The historic bridge collapsed and has since been replaced by a magnificent structure. Start the route at the Dunmallard car park and head to Dunmallard wood for an off-road ramble next to the river Earmont.

Hawkshead to Wray Castle Wray Castle is nestled next to Lake Windermere and is the great place to start this accessible route to Hawkshead. While you travel through rolling countryside, stop half way to take in the views of Blelham Tarn - a National Nature Reserve home to a number of rare invertebrates.

Miles Without Stiles points of interest 1. Friar’s Crag viewpoint The view at Friar’s Crag has been painted by Turner and lauded ‘one of the top three or four views in Europe’ by writer and painter John Ruskin.

Hundreds of years on, the beauty spot is still a sight to behold – and incredibly easy to reach.

Ambleside

Staveley Cross one of England’s fastest flowing rivers on this short route.

Kendal

There aren’t many rambles where you can stop along the way and touch the walls of an almost 2000-year-old Roman bath house, but at Ravenglass, that’s exactly what you can do.

The building was built just outside a fort, serving as a place of relaxation for Roman soldiers and civilians. Archaeologists even found evidence of under-floor heating!

Monk Coniston The accessible route at Monk Consiston starts at the lakeside car park and hugs the lake until you reach Coniston Boating Club.

My new chair had to fit my style and look good in front of the camera.

The WHILL ticked that box tenfold.

When a model met a WHILL Model C After a long search, Georgina Wasdall finally found a chair that represented her

“That’s the chair for me,” a 21-year-old Georgina Wasdall immediately said when she saw the WHILL Model C for the first time online.

Up until that point, she relied on others to push her in her manual wheelchair, something she always felt held her back.

And Georgina wasn’t going to let anything get in the way of a professional career in modelling and acting. After having to leave theatre school early due to chronic fatigue syndrome, she was signed up by model agency Zebedee Management and since 2017 has appeared in fashion shoots and promotional videos whilst continuing to audition for TV and movies.

“I didn’t want a bulky machine so when

I saw the sleek WHILL I had to find out more about it there and then,” she said.

“I spent a lot of time researching on the web and found TGA. I phoned and organised a safe home demonstration and assessment; I was so excited.”

A demonstration with Greg from TGA swiftly followed, with her mum and dad anxiously standing by. “They saw my instant reaction when I sat in it, I was beaming. Greg simply said, ‘search over?’ and I said ‘yep!’ I wanted it instantly. I felt comfortable and confident right away – so different to when I tried a manual wheelchair for the first time. Then I felt insecure, nervous and self-conscious. Not with the WHILL. My dad said it was great to see me hold myself properly when sitting.

“As a model, I love style and fashion and this was a product that really represented me,” she added. “I could be independent for the first time since a child and not have to be pushed around. I could now choose when I wanted to move.”

During the lockdown months, while waiting for photoshoots to resume, Georgina completed a huge personal achievement. As part of her agency’s ‘a mile in my shoes’ fundraising campaign, she completed a mile in her WHILL, solo.

It didn’t take long for Georgina to take her first trip out with her WHILL to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park. “I kept leaving my family behind as the freedom was amazing!” she said. “The omni wheels are incredible, I can turn in the tightest of spaces and you don’t feel as if you are driving a heavy machine.

“That mile I completed, I did on my own,” she said. “Not somebody pushing me, not having to rely on someone, it was me, I did it and do you know what?

Independently wheeling that mile felt like completing a 10k! I certainly have learnt to appreciate everything, but this is actually quite a big thing and an amazing move in an exciting direction. Each time I do get out for trips like this, no matter how long for, it just reinforces that this chair is the best purchase I’ve made and I cannot wait to be able to use it more when it’s safe to. It opens up so many doors.”

“That day showed immediately how my WHILL helped all the family. It was the same when we went to the Harry Potter experience at the Warner Brothers Studios. I had more time and space to look at everything and I know this sounds a bit odd, but we could enjoy each other’s reactions when looking at stuff. Before I always had my back to everyone so couldn’t see their faces.”

Once restrictions did ease, Georgina’s renewed sense of confidence could finally be translated on camera.

“One of the criteria when I was looking for my new chair was it had to fit my style and look good in front of the camera. The WHILL ticked that box tenfold,” she said.

“What was really lovely is how much both the photographer and makeup artist loved the WHILL as well. They complimented its design, its look and its speed. During the shoot we were able to make most of the WHILL app as well. This shocked the photographer and makeup artist when we were able to move the chair, with and without me in it, in and out of the shots with my sister controlling it.”

“It boosts your confidence,” she concludes. “People see me as not just being in a wheelchair now, there is more to me. Why can’t you still be stylish and love fashion if you use a wheelchair? You still want to dress up and look nice, right?

Encouraging more people to play golf with us remains our priority.

Back in the swing The fairways await for owners of the Breeze S4 GT

To help more people enjoy golf, TGA is supporting the Disabled Golf Association (DGA) with free membership offered to new owners of the fairway-friendly TGA Breeze S4 GT and Breeze S3 GT. Golf can be played safely outside and like all sports in the fresh air, can improve mental health and wellbeing.

The Breeze S4 GT offers an alternative to the traditional golf buggy with wide, fairway-friendly tyres and a holder for golf bags. This means less mobile players can still enjoy the benefits of playing golf, while avoiding the cost of buggy hire.

The DGA was set up in 2010 so disabled golfers could play in a relaxed and supportive group and now has over 750

members nationwide. It is coordinated by Graeme Robrtson, who organises around 40 annual competitions for golfers with a range of conditions.

Graeme has MS and is one of many wheelchair members who plays golf with standing support.

“Encouraging more disabled people to come and play golf with us, in a safe and relaxing way, remains our priority,” Graeme says. “Playing in a friendly group is such fun whatever your ability. This message will now be supported by TGA through its free DGA membership offer and new Breeze S4 GT. We look forward to working together with a view to increasing inclusion and accessibility in a sport that is proven to be rewarding.”

Freedom to travel: TGA team up with Northern

Northern Railway has introduced a mobility scooter permit scheme along with their new fleet of trains and the TGA Minimo, Maximo, WHILL Model C and Zest range are compatible.

By signing up to the ‘Rail Ready’ scheme, permit holders will receive a personalised card and sticker which is recognised by all station staff across the network, helping make the process of travelling by train simpler and quicker.

The scheme coincides with the rail operator’s upgrade of more than 200 existing trains and almost 100 new trains in order to make train travel in the north of England as accessibe as possible.

TGA Strongback wheelchairs used in vaccine centre TGA loaned award-winning Strongback wheelchairs to the NHS in Leeds so locals with limited mobility could be given their Covid vaccinations more easily.

TGA ambassador, Dr Hannah Barham Brown, uses a WHILL Model C and is currently delivering Covid vaccinations.

With many of her vulnerable patients unable to walk in for their jab, she asked TGA to help.

“Many of our elderly patients find walking a challenge so we needed more attendant-controlled wheelchairs to help,” she said. “TGA came to the rescue with their Strongback wheelchairs which they kindly delivered all the way from Suffolk.

“They are now making our job so much easier and our patients are more relaxed – many have said how comfortable they are.”

TGA’s donated mobility equipment lands in Fiji

Events restart with Event Mobility

TGA’s latest donation of mobility products to the charity PhysioNet have arrived over 9,000 miles away in Fiji, to give islanders access to road legal mobility scooters for the first time.

After a restrictive past year, you can’t be blamed for planning a trip to an event you have previously been putting off for another time.

The scooters will be distributed to individuals in need through the Fiji Spinal Injuries Association which works with PhysioNet. “Once again we’d like to thank TGA for its latest donation of mobility scooters to the Fiji Spinal Injuries Association via PhysioNet in the UK,” Peter Thompson, PhysioNet Founder said. “It is fantastic to see their safe arrival on the island, especially as the larger road-worthy machines are a first for Fiji – the Fiji Land Transport Authority are now in the process of licensing them. The smaller TGA Breeze Midi 3 has already been delivered to an elderly gentleman in Suva who can now benefit from independence with peace of mind.”

I was determined to find a scooter that I could go out into the countryside on and not just around the block. I was not going to accept anything less.

When David passed away, I was lost with what to do with my life. Now my life is full thanks to my Supersport.

I’ll give any terrain a go. I wanted something that was comfortable in fields and forests. It’s not just the sights and sounds of the countryside I missed, but the fresh smells as well.

My parents continued to explore the world even when they were elderly; my dad made it to Timbuktu just before he passed away.

I guess my scooter is like the Land Rover Defenders they used to drive over the desert.

My Breeze is so nice and comfy to drive. I can’t express enough the happiness it brings me. I love going out and feeling the sun on my face – it has made all the difference. Honestly, it gives me an epic feeling of freedom.

Where I live there are lots of rocky paths, rural tracks and cattle grids. I always tackle cattle grids head-on and really go for it in one hit – I’ve mastered the right speed and technique, kind of like how my dad said to drive in the desert over sand ripples.

Living with my condition can be hard but you know what, I will not be beaten. It has helped me remain positive. Don’t try and fight disability, accept it and make the most out of life. My Breeze scooter, dog and faith are all helping me find my way.

My time here has really blossomed since owning a scooter. I can go anywhere I like and am not limited by my walking range or the risk of getting exhausted. I say to everyone: ‘Get out and live life to the full!’. My days are now full again thanks to my TGA.

WHILL is completely different in looks and the way it works. People may say I went for it just because of its contemporary styling but they’d be wrong, it’s the practical functionality which is the most attractive in my eyes.

I massively missed going out with my grandkids, I missed the beach, the countryside, walking a dog; I just wanted to do normal things that able-bodied people do. Being stuck inside was awful.

I have already been into the city on the bus and train. Access was so easy even when space was tight. Other products say they are manoeuvrable, they are not. The fact that you can spin around on the spot and face the same way as everyone else, without awkward reversing is priceless. I can sit comfortably at office desks – again I’ve never been able to do this. The designers have really thought things through.

Where we are going now I simply cannot believe. To sit on the beach after five years and look out to sea is breath-taking. Even feeling the wind in your hair is special. It was a complete revelation to me. I knew my life had suddenly changed for the better. I now look at so many more places and say, ‘do you know what, I’m going to have a go at getting there’.

At the end of the day, my smile says it all when using the WHILL, I’ve got my freedom back. As a family we can spend more time together at outdoor activity centres or soft play areas. The local park is more accessible so I can accompany the boys.

I’m planning to revisit the Lake District next year. I used to love hill walking so when I went with a disability charity in my wheelchair, I had a great time but there were still places I couldn’t get to.

Exploring and life in general will now be so much more rewarding with my Vita X.

My support group and ME After struggling to find support online, Maxine Ellis started her own ME support group

It was in the aisles of her local grocery store that a 41-year-old Maxine Ellis, a busy single parent spending her working day managing a local charity, had a feeling something wasn’t quite right.

“I started to notice things like I couldn’t keep my arms lifted up for long in the shop and I kept getting these flu-like symptoms after activities,” she said. “I pushed through and then went away to the Lake District with my dad, came back and was just completely flat out. I couldn’t get off the sofa – they thought I had glandular fever.

“Then for about six months I’d be at work for two weeks and then I’d have to take two weeks off because I wasn’t

able to cope with anything. Eventually, they diagnosed me with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS).”

Chronic fatigue syndrome is also known as ME, a generic term which crosses over with Fibromyalgia and other conditions.

“Because of that, I had to resign from work when my son was about nine years old. Over a period of six months, I became completely bed-bound which was tough because, being a single parent, you’re still doing everything. After two years my son at 11 years old became a young carer which was mortifying for me.”

Feeling increasingly isolated from the outside world, Maxine tried reaching out to connect with others in a similar situation. To her dismay, however, her

online search for local groups returned no results.

“I thought gosh, in the whole of Hertfordshire there’s going to be so many people out there in the same position and we’re all sitting in our houses or bedrooms on our own not connecting with each other,” she said.

“I thought how good it would be just to be able to share information and make friends. I wanted anybody else in that situation, so isolated and struggling, not to feel alone.”

Using her experience of managing a charity, the job she had to resign from, Maxine went about setting up a support group up of her own. She sent an email to the ME Association to see if anybody in St Albans would be interested. Then, her inbox started to fill up with people wanting to meet up.

“I thought let’s just take the plunge and do it,” she said. “We had our first meeting

and I think there were about 11 of us.

After six months to a year, people from all over Hertfordshire were contacting us. We now have about 180 members.

“I remember one person saying they had ME for 20 years and this was the first time they had connected with other people with it.”

To better understand the needs of her new members, Maxine sent out a survey asking what would help most.

“They said access to wheelchairs and mobility scooters on a temporary basis, so if they go on holiday or have a hospital appointment, they could loan it. Or, if they’re thinking about buying one, they could give it a go,” she said.

“We approached TGA and they donated two Minimos and two wheelchairs.

Scooters are a huge help for people with ME because if you can’t do the walking or walk as far, it means you can get to your local shop or go to the park. You’re

not stuck at home, you’re able to get out, connect and get some vitamin D and sunshine on your body.

“I had a mobility scooter which after five years was like being born again,” she adds. “All I did for those years was look out my bedroom window at a cycle track I used to go down on my bike with my son.

I used to say to myself ‘please God, just let me get down that cycle track one day’.

When I got the scooter, that was the first thing I did.”

For Maxine and her son, there are plenty more journeys ahead. “My son’s 23 now.

It was scary for him,” she said. “As he got older, he understood. He has helped with the group as well and went off to university. I’m so proud of him.”

As for the charity, “our aim is to keep it personal,” she concludes. “Because it affects people slightly differently and everyone has an individual story, it’s about giving an opportunity for that person to be heard.”
