2023-2024

DECA is a business oriented club that emphasizes the use of problem solving skills in real world problems. Through case studies and exams, you will devlop your business knowelege, creative thinking skills, public speaking skills and much more. This guidebook is intended to help you prepare for the 2023-2024 chapter applications. If you want to develop skills and make memories that will last for the rest of your high school career DECA is the club for you!

What is a Case Study?

A case study is a real-life business scenario. Typically, the business is experiencing a problem and it is your responsibility to solve it while fulfilling a set of criteria. For the admission process, you have 10 minutes to prepare for a 3 minute presentation. Afterwards, the judge will ask you spontaneous questions for 1 minute.

Practice: Practice makes perfect! There are lots of resources online from which you can practice from For example, try searching "DECA Gr 9 Principles Case Studies" as a place to start. Practice voice modulation and speaking in front of a mirror as well.

Arrive early: Please be early to your case to ensure you can account for any last-minute situations.

Get a Good Night's Sleep: Being well-rested has proven to improve your performance. This will also reduce stress levels/nerves

Confidence is Key: Although you may be nervous, appear confident. Judges can tell if you ' re nervous so take a few deep breaths before you start Smile to display a friendly/calm attitude

Have fun: Remember this is a learning experience, so take a deep breath and have fun!

TOTAL PREPARATION TIME: 10 MINUTES

1 minute - Read the case study and understand the problem

4 minutes - Create a solution to the problem

4 minutes - Plan out your presentation; how will you include purple cows and real life examples of your solution

1 minute - Review what you have and quickly run through your presentation

Note: You can use a pen and paper to prepare

What is an Exam?

The 2022-2023 DECA Entrance Exam consists of 50 multiple choice questions related to the business field. You will have a total of 60 minutes to complete it. To practice you can find resources on offical DECA websites by searching "DECA Principles Exams."
