ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Tuesday car-

ried out its 100th execution since lifting a moratorium on the death penalty last December, in what rights group Amnesty International described as a “shameful milestone”. Hangings resumed after the Tehreeki-Taliban's brutal attack on Peshawar's Army Public School in December 2014, in which 154 people were killed ─ most of them children. Munir Hussain, who was convicted of a double murder in 2000, was hanged in the town of Vehari in Punjab province, said Syed Babar Ali Shah, superintendent of Vehari jail. “He was convicted for murdering his nephew and niece with an axe over a property dispute in November 2000,” said Shah, adding that Hussain was sentenced to death in 2001. A second prison official confirmed the execution. Amnesty said Islamabad was gaining a reputation as one of the world's leading executioners. A moratorium on the death penalty had been in force since 2008, but after the Army Public School attack it was lifted for those convicted of terrorism offences. In March it was extended to cover all capital offences. The European Union, the United Nations and human rights campaigners have all urged Pakistan to reinstate the moratorium. Critics say the country's criminal justice system is marred by police torture, poor legal representation for victims and unfair trials. Amnesty estimates that Pakistan has more than 8,000 prisoners on death row, most of whom have exhausted the appeals process. “In reaching this shameful milestone of 100 executions in just over four months, the Pakistani authorities are showing total disregard for human life," said David Griffiths, the group's deputy Asia Pacific director, in a statement. “Our concerns are heightened by manifestly unfair trials in many cases that fall well below minimum standards set by international law. —FP Monitoring

Altaf seeks apology from Imran Khan

KARACHI/LONDON: Muttahida Qaumi

Movement (MQM) Chief Altaf Hussain on Tuesday said that the allegations leveled by Pakistan Tehreek-eInsaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan were baseless and reprehensible. “I condemn his allegations which are untrue and baseless. He must prove all accusations or get ready to face the court,” MQM chief said in a statement released from London. "If MQM was involved in killing of people, how the party won NA-246 elections?" Altaf Hussain questioned, and demanded Imran Khan’s apology over his claims. In an interview with a private channel, Altaf said that people in the NA-246 constituency thanked him by saying that

MQM workers used to come to their homes and ask for extortion money. But because of him, now they are coming to their homes to ask for votes, he added. MQM chief said that leveling allegations on any political party without substantial proof has parallels with a murder. Khan also said that every policeman who participated in the operation in Karachi headed by Naseerullah Babar was killed, he added. How could MQM get around one lac votes if the party carries out target killing? Party leader asked. Hussain demanded Khan to apologise to MQM in front of the entire nation. He further said that he should approach court with proofs and evidences otherwise he should get ready to face trial himself. —DNA

Nation in grip of land mafias, says Sarwar LAHORE : Former governor of Punjab and Senior Member Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Muhammad Sarwar said, “Pakistan is a country blessed with vast lands of rich soil. However, it is saddening to know that these rich lands are in the grip of corrupt land mafias. Over the years, the position of landa mafias in Pakistan have grown strong in the real estate world. People have been displaced and looted from their homes. While, successive governments have tabled all such issues.” In a statement, Sarwar highlighted the issue of land mafais and their power over the people. He said, “Statistics have shown that in more than 30 sectors of Punjab an alarming 350 acres of land are looted. The land mafia is a network of criminals, politicians and unfaithful property dealers. It's a whole nexus of corrupt people trying to steal away from the people of Pakistan. The most threatening issue is the involvement of government officials in these malicious acts. The core reason that these land mafias silently carry out their illegal acts is because of the patronage they enjoy from politicians and government officers.” The former governor also stressed on the role of the government in this agonizing issue. He stated, “While land mafias continue to steal away land from the hands of vulnerable famers, the government stays quiet watching the cold impact take over innocent citizens. There is a strong need for government officials to exhibit a sense of political maturity and staunch effective laws to eradicate all land mafias from the country.” –FP Monitoring

Wishing your chief minister to fly

I

MANZOOR ALI

rooznamila@gmail.com

f the wishes of the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were wings attached to the shoulders of their chief minister, they would be flapping and flying Chief Minister Pervez Khattak to Peshawar hospitals to check on those injured during the stormy rain which hit the area Sunday evening. But since that was not so, ---I mean the wishes were there but the wings were missing--- Chief Minister Pervaz Khattak of KP stayed in his native town, regardless that almost three dozen individuals had lost their lives in the storm and a hundred or so were injured. Not taking into account the fact that the buildings which were either fully or partially razed to the ground could still pose a threat to the residents there. But the people of KP were wrong if they wished their chief minister come flying into the hospitals. Even if the CM

had wings, which he did not have, it would have been unjust to think that he would be coming flying in braving the storm when even birds, especially the elderly birds, prefer to hop on the ground pecking for food in such wild weathers. Even if had tried to fly, his creaking ancient shoulders would not have allowed him. Besides at such an age, one wishes to lean against something soft and compensate for the absence of flesh on one’s bones, rather than spread one’s wings against storms. If there was the concept of the welfare state being like a loving parent of the ordinary citizens, then the chief minister would have been in the hospital the whole time or visiting the areas reeling under the impact of the storm. Frankly, speaking the chief minister was right when he said he was not a doctor whose visit could have benefited the wounded individuals, medically. What can one say if the parents of all sick children admitted in hospital do not understand that they are not doctors and as such their visit to the hospitals cannot help in speeding up the process of curing of their dear ones! Had they known that, or the doctors had told them that, the parents would have just deposited their sick children in the hospitals and than waited for a word from the doctors that their children were well; then they would have gone to the hospitals and picked up their children. I believe the doctors in Pakistan and the whole world are acting irresponsibly by allowing vis-

iting hours for friends and families to visit the patients. It is only the KP chief minister who has broken the news after thorough research that visits of non-doctors be they relatives, friends or chief ministers do not help the patients. In fact, it would be better for the physical health and peace of mind of the families, friends and chief ministers to stay put in their hometowns even if there are a thousand or even many more wounded brought to the hospital because of some natural or man made calamity. Many think that the CM is just making excuses to justify his comfortable stay in his village home that night. But that is not right. The PTI did a great research on every aspect of our lives before it entered the political arena, specially the electoral process. It must be the party’s considered opinion that the old notion of visits from friends, family and politicians encourages patients and helps them in getting well quickly are just a bunch baloney and should not be given importance. Perhaps, the party chief Imran Khan’s new wife did not know that when she visited hospitals and tried to console the wounded and their relatives. But that is understandable as she is new to the party and may have not read all the minutes of the proceedings of the party’s executive committee. Even then she should be punished for visiting the victims of the storm in spite of being a non-doctor just to make her an example for those who do not read party literature but act on their instincts.

"They feed data into the vet inspect software, which is accessible through dashboard by data analysts, who then make comparison with some indicators: absent staff, medicines not available and unstamped meat sale. We have already built a central data of 1.3 million mobile phone numbers of the farmers. They may receive robocal while common citizens can also make call to our call center to get assistance. The Farmers should be informed of how to improve milk's shelf life, reasons of its rejection, current rate and artificial insemination", he added. Describing the importance of technology, Dr. Saif said that the livestock is a backbone of Punjab's economy that not only provides meat, milk and wool but also employment to a huge population and it contributes approximately 11 percent to the national GDP. KP governor directs officers to serve tribesmen with sincerity

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Governor Sardar Mahtab Ahmad Khan has directed all the government officers of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) to serve the tribal people with sincerity and true spirit, rather than adopting authoritative behaviour in their interaction with the local population. The KP governor urged completion of the development projects without any further delay in order to provide quick services and facilities to FATA people. Governor Mahtab said this while giving policy guidelines to the new FATA Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) Muhammad Aslam Kambwa who called on him at the Governor House, Peshawar on Tuesday. The governor directed the new ACS not to limit the developmental projects only to mere paperwork, but ensure timely completion of all the welfare schemes for the larger interest of the tribal population. The governor also urged him to ensure close coordination with all the parliamentarians and important people of

FATA and they should be consulted properly in connection with the development projects. The governor expressed the hope that the new ACS would utilise his vast experience gained from serving in different areas of the country, including KP and FATA. The governor directed the additional chief secretary to complete all welfare projects so far initiated in the FATA without any further delay to ensure uplift of the mentioned areas. He also directed him to ensure transparency in the development work and make all the government officers and other employees answerable to the state, while maintaining a system of proper monitoring on the activities of government employees. The governor vehemently declared that no leniency on the part of the government employees should be tolerated further. He said every penny of the FATA people will be spent for their welfare and no one will be allowed to misuse the funds. The governor also directed the offi-

Transporters’ strike irks citizens SYED MAAZ JAN UPPER DIR: The

transporters of Barawal route again observed strike on Tuesday causing difficulties to the locals as well as employees of both public and private sectors in reaching their destination. The government had reduced the fuel prince a few months back to provide relief to the people. After this constant reduction the Upper Dir district administration had issued fare list to all the transporters but they were yet to follow it. The transporters were not ready to pass the benefit of reduction in the prices of fuel to the people. A survey conducted by The Frontier Post revealed that the public transporters running from Barawal to Dir were ignoring the fares lists issued to them and receiving the previous fares from commuters. Zainullah said that he has never seen a fare list in any vehicle and the drivers were still charging old fares, although the fares were

reduced on all roads about five months earlier. He said drivers and commuters some time have reasoning and mostly exchanging harsh words over the fares but the administration failed to solve the problem. The transporters said that they would not cut-off the fares due to high inflation and owing to this they had made strike which will be continued. They said that they had not much profit margin and couldn’t reduce the fares as they could not earn enough money to cover their daily expenses. A commuter Abdul Wahid said that the transporters had even not deducted the fares for local stops and continued to collect Rs50 instead of Rs32 from Ganori to Dir. He said that the transporters sometimes stage nominal wheal-jam strike to force the passengers to pay them more fares. The commuters demanded the government to take note of the situation and impose fine upon the transporters violating the government issued fare lists.

cials concerned for demonstrating austerity in their respective offices and ensure 100 percent attendance at government institutions. Furthermore, the governor also stated that the FATA parliamentarians should be consulted in connection with the people welfare schemes undertaken in the tribal belt. He said the tribal elite should also be given due respect in the developmental strategy, while adding that their recommendations and suggestions should be given importance in the implementation process as well. The governor directed that the doors of FATA secretariat and other administrative offices be kept opened for the tribal people and they should be treated in a friendly manner by the officials concerned. Meanwhile, the KP governor urged the administrative officers to arrange visits to their areas and listen to the grievances of the tribal population to find suitable solutions to their problems. He also issued directives in connection with the timely repatriation of temporarily displaced persons. —APP

US-UNHCR inaugurate education projects in Punjab

RAWALPINDI: United Nations (UN)

Refugee Agency in collaboration with United States (US) Embassy on Tuesday inaugurated two education projects under Refugee Affected and Hosting Areas (RAHA) initiative that will benefit more than 1,850 Pakistani and Afghan school students in Rawalpindi and Taxila. The US Department of State Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration, Simon Henshaw and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Representative in Pakistan, Indrika Ratwatte, participated in a ground breaking ceremony at a Government Girls' High School in Rawalpindi. Under RAHA programme, the Government Girls High School Rawalpindi will receive additional furnished classrooms and new latrines, and the Government Elementary School in

Taxila will have three additional furnished classrooms and new latrines. The Government Elementary School in Taxila will have three additional furnished classrooms, a new veranda, and extra latrines. Enrollment campaigns and a capacity building workshop for teachers are also included in these projects which are expected to be completed by August this year. In September 2014, the US contributed nearly $9 million to the RAHA programme in Pakistan, supporting 40 projects throughout the country which will benefit nearly 300,000 people. This includes 19 education projects, helping around 12,000 Afghan and 53,000 Pakistan students gain better schooling. In Punjab alone, there are seven other projects being implemented which, together with the two schools in Rawalpindi and Taxila, are worth millions of rupees. —FP Monitoring

UMAR HASHMI ISLAMABAD/RAWALPINDI: Ayyan’s money-laundering case

has now become a trailer of a Hollywood movie with many twists every day. At every hearing she is presented before a different court. Yesterday, she was presented before a banking court in Rawalpindi, which extended her judicial remand till May 8. Special Banking Court Judge Sabir Sultan directed the investigation officer to present a full challan on the next hearing. Ayyan’s lawyer Sardar Ishaq objected that the presented charge-sheet pertaining to her case was incomplete, whereby a complete map of the crime scene was not provided. The Customs officials however ascertained that a map was not provided by their department and that according to their procedures, the charge-sheet was complete. As usual, Ayyan’s attending the court attracted attention from public. People darted to get a better look at her, which at last caused a ruckus. As she belongs to fashion industry, she made her every appearance with different style and this was not an exception too. This time Ayyan appears in a white dress with open neck displaying a ‘tattoo behind her neck. As the media men were there to capture her, they couldn’t help neglecting the tattoo and made it with close focus. Although used to be known as a

The publisher and distributors of the magazine, printed in Dubai, assured to withdraw all copies of the magazine from the book stalls and to delete an admittedly wrong and defamatory piece of writing from websites. The unqualified apology came in two separate letters by the publisher and distributors of magazine to Senator Farooq H. Naek, counsel for Asif Ali Zardari who had served notices on them on April 13, said a PPP press release issued here Tuesday. It may be mentioned that Farooq H. Naek had served notices for publishing and circulating a defamatory story about the former president's alleged secret marriage describing it as a criminal act that had damaged Zardari's reputation. Publisher Zahraa Saifullah while offering `sincere apologies' promised to issue corrigendum in the next issue of Hello, adding that she bore no malice towards Asif Zardari, pleading that the defamation notice be withdrawn. —FP Monitoring

Babar strikes late as Bangladesh close first day on 236/4

KHULNA: Mominul Haque scored 80 as

Bangladesh made an impressive start in the first Test against Pakistan in Khulna on Tuesday, reaching 236 for four by stumps on the opening day. The talented 23-year-old left-hander batted fluently to cross 50 for the 12th time in his first 13 Tests before being trapped leg-before by Zulfiqar Babar off the last ball of the day. Opener Imrul Kayes made 51, Mohammad Mahmudullah scored 49 and Shakib Al Hasan was unbeaten on 19 after the hosts elected to take first strike in good batting conditions at the Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium. Mominul has scored a half-century or more in his last 10 Tests. Only four batsmen -- Viv Richards of the West Indies, South Africa's AB de Villiers and the Indian duo of Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag -- have scored more 50s in consecutive Test matches. Mominul put on 40 for the second wicket with Imrul, 95 for the third with Mahmudullah and 49 for the fourth with Shakib as Pakistan's bowlers toiled for success on an unhelpful pitch. Leg-spinner Yasir Shah, off-break bowler Mohammad Hafeez, left-arm seamer Wahab Riaz and left-arm spinner Zulfiqar claimed a wicket each, but Pakistan were let down by shoddy catching and fielding. The most expensive let-off was by

Zulfiqar, who spilled a simple return catch when Mominul was on 17. Yasir broke a 52-run opening stand between Tamim Iqbal and Imrul just before lunch by having Tamim (25) caught at forward short-leg by Azhar Ali. Yasir, who had missed the preceding limited-overs series due to injury, ended the day with figures of one for 58 in 18 overs. Imrul survived a strong leg-before appeal off the third ball of the innings from Junaid Khan as the TV umpire turned down Pakistan's review. Hafeez, who dropped Tamim at leg slip off Zulfiqar when he was on 16, made amends by taking a return catch to dismiss Imrul after lunch. Pakistan had to wait for almost two hours for their next success, which came after tea when wicket-keeper Sarfraz Ahmed dived to his right to remove Mahmudullah off Wahab's bowling. Bangladesh handed Test debuts to Soumya Sarkar and fast bowler Mohammad Shahid, while Pakistan picked uncapped batsman Sami Aslam for the opening match of the two-Test series. Pakistan also ignored senior offspinner Saeed Ajmal, preferring to go in with two specialist slow bowlers in Zulfiqar and Yasir. The hosts swept the ODI series 3-0 and also defeated Pakistan for the first time in a Twenty20 international. —FP Monitoring

Easy-looking match for Real Madrid vs relegation-haunted Almeria MADRID: Real Madrid face what

Abbottabad clinches KP Inter-Region Boys U-19 Hockey Championship title PESHAWAR: A goal down in the first

session Abbottabad scored all five goals in the second session by defeating strong Mardan 5-1 and lifted the trophy of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Inter-Region Boys Under-19 Hockey Championship played at Abbottabad Hockey Stadium on Tuesday. PTI Central Leader Asif Zubair Sheikh was the chief guest on this occasion who witnessed the thrilling final. Organizing Secretary Salim Raza, Director Sports Tariq Mehmood, Assistant Director Sports Syed Saqlain Shah, Jamshed Baloch, Secretary Abbottabad Hockey Association Sardar Waseem Jadoon, officials, players and spectators were also present. Before the start of the match the two finalists' teams were introduced to him. The match was started on fast

tempo as soon Mardan opened the account in the 6th minute when center forward Aimal Khan netted a fine goal to make the tally 1-0. After getting lead, Mardan put in more pressure and soon got a penalty stroke was it was missed by Fayyaz Ali as he saw his attempt went wide from the goal-post. The Mardan forwards also made some fine moves after taking lead but failed to score any goal till the end of the first session. Abbottabad on the other hands were pressed to the wall after conceding a goal but they managed their position and made some occasional moves but did not score any goal. Till the end of the first session Mardan was leading by 1-0. After the resumption of the second session Abbottabad fully dominated the

should be a comfortable game on Wednesday when they play at home to relegation haunted Almeria. Carlo Ancelotti's side will kick off knowing what title rivals, FC Barcelona, who begin the midweek round of matches on Tuesday at home to Getafe, have done and depending on Barca's result they will be either two, three or five points behind the league leaders. Almeria have improved since the arrival of Sergi Barjuan as first team coach and two home wins have lifted them out of the relegation zone, although the club still has to await the outcome of a decision by FIFA to punish them with a sanction of three points for the non-payment for a player in 2010. That affair looks likely to drag on into the close season and confuse the relegation issue in the run in to the end of the season for Almeria and their rivals in the battle to avoid the drop. On paper it looks to be a straightforward match for Real Madrid, who will still be without the injured Luka Modric, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema and who have Sergio Ramos and Dani Carvajal both suspended for the game after completing a cycle of bookings during Sunday's win away to Celta Vigo. Benzema's absence will allow Javier Hernandez to continue in the team and the Mexican is repaying the late chance he has been given to show his talents with key goals, two in Vigo and the winning goal against Atletico Madrid in Vigo. With a much tougher game in Seville ahead of the first leg of the Champions League semi-final against Juventus, rotations are very much the policy for Ancelotti and Keylor Navas could have a chance of playing in goal, while Jese Rodriguez, Fabio Coentrao and Al- SUZHOU: China's Xu Xin(L) and Zhang Jike celebrate after winning the varo Arbeloa all get time on the men's Doubles match against China's ma Long and Germany's Timo Boll at the 53rd Table Tennis World Championships on Tuesday. —Xinhua pitch. —FP Monitoring

This year's Australian Open boasted $32 million, while last year's U.S. Open had total prize money of $38 million. As part of the club's master plan, which in 2019 will see a new roof on Court One, Wimbledon's player facilities have also been enhanced with six permanent ice baths installed, a bigger warm-up area and private treatment rooms. This year's Wimbledon begins a week later than usual on June 29, reflecting the All England's Club's drive to create a longer grasscourt season following the French Open.

The three-week build-up to the championships will feature an ATP grasscourt event in Stuttgart plus ATP and WTA tournaments in Nottingham, while the Queen's Club and Halle tournaments have been bumped up to ATP 500 status. Political uncertainty mars future of Crimea's athletes MOSCOW: Moscow's annexation of the strategic peninsula of Crimea from Ukraine has not only sparked the worst crisis between Russia and the West since the Cold War but also put under threat the sporting careers of Crimean athletes. The future of football and basketball clubs in Crimea has been put on hold after the peninsula, long home to Russian military bases, was taken over by Moscow in March 2014 in a move condemned by Kiev and the West as an illegal land grab. European football's ruling body, UEFA, and the International Basketball Federation, FIBA, have both banned Crimean teams from participating in Russia's championships. The Judicial Commission raises question

T

he questionnaire issued to the accusing political parties, particularly by PTI, by the Judicial Commission regarding central and systematic planned rigging in the 2013 general elections proves that shouting foul and accusing almost every respectable Pakistani, from atop the container, of conspiracy to steal elections from PTI and handing the same to PML-N was the easy part. The Commission members and its chairman are asking questions which are tough, though maybe not impossible, to prove. The commission refuses to go by the general impression that may have emerged in the media on this issue. It wants definite accusations and definite answers: from the definition of centrally designed rigging to who planned it and who executed the same, the threemember Judicial Commission chaired by the Chief Justice of Pakistan, wants evidence along with allegations. It may not be possible to prove, though not impossible, as to who did it, as the accusing parties have no direct evidence such as a video or minutes of any such meetings of the accused conspirers. However, if the conspiracy was so widespread that it engulfed the whole process of the elections held countywide, then there must be dozens of second tier of executioners of the rigging plan as well as the tens of thousands of government officials designated by the Election Commission on the day of polling on every polling booth. Even if there is no volunteer to blow the whistle among these, probe by the investigation agencies men, to be appointed by the Judicial Commission, can break some of a few dozens of the said tens of thousands of government officials into confession of being part of a conspiracy or at least being ordered to act illegally. We have to remember that there could hardly be any hardened criminals among the government officials employed for elections duty and there maybe some who were pressured into acting illegally and then there maybe those who loved the PTI or hated the PML-N; such men and women would come out readily. If no such corroborating evidence and witnesses are found to prove such a widespread conspiracy, the theory of centrally designed rigging of the general elections would be thrown out of the window. After that finding threads of a plan to rig elections in proving a pattern to steal the popular candidate becomes not very credible for the simple reason that the if their were weaknesses in the election rules, these were for every constituency and those who rigged elections even individually in their constituencies would adopt similar methods to beat the system. While the ECP has denied it, the uneven selective distribution of extra ballots to favor a particular party’s candidate may indicate that the conspiracy, if any, was hatched at the very top. However, the investigation and analysis of the Judicial Commission in this regard should not go in vain. It is very important the Commission suggest ways to make sure the to streamline the election system for the future; and, punish speedily those deviating from these rules. Our Election Commission is not less powerful than that of India, still, ours seems to have feet of clay while the Commission across the border is respected for its performance. It seem, we have to appoint very strong, experienced and honest administrator as CEC to use the authority, the ECP already has. However, after Benazir Bhutto’s marriage with Asif Ali Zardari, voices of concerns and discerns were raised within and outside the party that Zialul Haq could not finish the PPP but Zardari would definitely do it. However, the time has proved that Zardari emerged as a strong leader of the PPP after Benazir Bhutto’s death. At a time when Sindh was angry at Benazir’s death, Zardari stood for Pakistan, saying he will not allow Balkanization of Pakistan. Despite corruption charges, Zardari always stood for the integrity and security of the country. Zardari has taken a firm stand on the issue of Pak-China Economic Corridor, which some politicians are trying to make controversial and break the sustainability of the economic reforms launched by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz government. According to Zardari, political parties had a consensus that they would not do anything that could derail the Chinese investment in the country. Addressing a public rally at Lyari area of Karachi, he says that all the political parties had decided that Chinese investment would not be harmed in any way and there would be no politicking on it from any side. He is leading the party all alone, outwitting the political leaders of the country who used to say that Zardari will be the last nail in the PPP’s coffin. We hope that the leaders of the other political parties will listen to Zardari’s advice and would not do anything which would harm the project of the economic corridor. Zardari’s advice came at a time when the PPP showed abysmal performance in local bodies’ elections in all the cantonments of the country. He is trying to boost up the party in Karachi and has declared a special development package for Lyari and ordered his Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah to hand over the party leadership to the youth in the province. As a political party, the PPP is a force having roots in the people and its stand on the economic corridor is appreciable. But the party needs reforms and Zardari is the person who can do it. The party’s old hawks should also relinquish their grip on the party and hand over the charge to the young generation. It is hoped that Zardari would hold the party elections and will go ahead beyond family politics.

Roohi Bano: what is left to snatch!

V

eteran actor Roohi Bano attacked by her late son’s friend in the Defence area of Lahore and was shifted to Services Hospital for treatment. The actor said, “My son Ali’s friend Israr approached me and asked me to sell my house to him. Upon refusal, he hurled harsh words at me and threatened me of dire consequences. He later got infuriated and attacked me with a sharp edged weapon”. Police confirmed it and registered an FIR under section 506 and 354 of Pakistan Penal Code which cites as whoever assaults or uses criminal force to any person in attempting to commit theft on any property which that person is then wearing or carrying shall be punished and whoever commences the offence of criminal intimidation shall be punished. A decade back her only son was found murdered near his residence in Gulberg III. Rafique Akhtar, the bother-in-law of Roohi Bano, told police that he visited Bano’s house. He said after spending some time there he returned to his house when police informed him that Ali was shot dead near his house. The killer(s) dumped his body alongside a fence which was spotted by passersby after listening to the ring tone of his cell phone. Initially, the police did not inform Roohi Bano as she was not feeling well. A case was registered against the deceased’s friends and police had been raiding their hideouts. Needless to cite the section 302 of Pakistan Penal Code, but no one heard that culprits of that incident were caught, tried or convicted. This assignation and an attempt of assignation cannot be called as an attempt on just a person. This is an attempt on an artist community and the art itself. How a humane can except that Roohi Bano lived after the brutal murder of her only son. Pakistan is one of the strongest media in the world. But the no one could do anything to bring justice to this veteran actor. Every street of Pakistan is filled with the nongovernmental organizations, having a huge budget, but no strong protest is registered on this brutal and inhuman act. People wonder, of a chief minister who proudly calls himself ‘khadim e aala’ (the chief servant) didn’t even bother take any administrative action for a veteran who had been ruling the hearts of the people since decades. The same standard statements, the same rotten acts! Bano witnessed the birth of the television industry in Pakistan, become an integral part of it, worked with country’s leading actors and after that witnessed the face of a murdered son and became a part of a life time trauma. People wonder of a former actor, Kanwal, who could not stop her tears following the policy of her PML-N lords; did not bother to visit the concerned police station for a follow up. Daughter of Indian tabla maestro Allah Rakha, Bano won many awards including the Pride of Performance. But today she lives alone on Kasuri Road, in a house that is so broken down it gives one the impression that it is haunted. It lacks basic amenities such as gas and power, the furniture is broken, trash fills the driveway and a stench surrounds the place. The only working appliance Bano owns is her television. And the lords responsible for her protection do not have a sense on benevolence for such veterans.

Women’s rights, the otherside E

Hadeeqa Saeed Khan

ver since the creation began and women came into being the sense of equality grew amongst the women for having their rights. The women initially started to participate equally as a male member in the house then in the society and today we see every single woman fighting for her rights in the society. Women consider themselves to be equal to men, but if we think deeply, if a woman was considered to be equal to a man then why did God create women? Why not all males? Why did He Almighty differentiate between the two genders? Though it is a fact which every woman knows deep inside her heart that no matter how much they strive for their equal rights and leave no stone unturned, but whenever they are in some problem all they seek is the help of a male, if they are surrounded by a mob having a maximum number of males they step back because they are not able to compete with them and men are superincumbent to women, that’s is where the males take the advantage of stepping on the women forgetting the fundamental thing that by differentiating the two genders God also told mankind of the rights of both, however the illiterate and selfish male dominating society has completely forgotten the rights of women. It rather fo-

A

cuses on being harsh and malevolent towards them and treats them in the worst way possible. It would not be wrong to say that women today have excelled a lot which is positive for the society and has brought an extravagant change in the culture. But still unfortunately in certain cases a woman has to neglect her children when she is the sole person to run the house, where she has to earn as a father and groom as mother. But the malevolent society does not spare such hardworking women and call them with different names and make their survival challenging. The women’s rights are rapidly growing in Pakistan and are causing a lot of disturbance for those anti woman groups who take women as a worthless and an disadvantageous creature to stand up for her right and raise her voice against violence. Today women are aware of their rights and so are they struggling to achieve it as well which is not wrong because the unfair society has tried to crush them with harshness and made them crippled. However the women in the rural sector are still on a relentless downslide with heinous woman- hating practices which have made them prone towards the unfair behavior of the cruel society where the women are not given their basic rights. Even after immense growing awareness of women rights the unprogressive areas have women who are not getting their fundamental rights and they suffer through domestic violence, honor killing, acid attacks, forced marriages, rape, beaten in public etc. many women suffer due to their silence and only a few raise their voices in protest which are hardly ever noticed. Due to these unfair deals the women had to raise their voices and fight for their rights. They had to tell the men what they are capable of and what dif-

ference can be made by giving them their rights. Due to the increase in the raise of the women’s rights voice the first feminist publication was published in 1972 entitled, A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, by British writer Mary Wollstonecraft It is said that “behind every successful man there is a woman” it is apparently just a sentence but it has a whole story behind it. It is the woman who is there with the man in his hard times, who makes him realize that he can achieve his goals, who is with him in every thick and thin of life. That woman is not a friend or for other matters his girlfriend, that woman is a mother, a wife, a daughter, a sister, and that is not just one woman it’s a whole squad behind the success of that one single man. The issue of women’s rights is primarily not a domestic issue it is an issue of women to have equal rights politically, socially and economically. Our society has moved in that time frame where it is imperative to give equal rights to the women. The women were earlier brutally discriminated by the barbarous male dominating society however it is still the same in the rural areas, but has minimized a lot in the urban sector, it is an important need of the time. Pakistani Women’s Human Rights Organization (PWHRO) is the organization which is taking notice for preserving the rights of women in Pakistan and to bring the plight of Pakistaniwomen under the censure of the world’s Human rights Organizations and fight for the elimination of the heart throbbing monstrous practices and laws like one of the most famous law, The Shariah Law, already in effect in several areas in Pakistan. On the name of this law such practices are tak-

ing place which are not even close to Shariat. Those who do these hellish practices on the name of Shariat they should be asked, which Shariat says that a girl should be beaten up in public for any reason? Acid should be thrown on her if not married by the choice of the family? Should be killed for marrying someone out of the tribe? Should be killed if raped? These are the self-made inhuman rules on the name of Shariat. However the truth is that the Shariat says,“seek the acceptance of the girl if she wishes to marry the guy proposed to her by her family”, about rape the shariyat says,“The punishment for rape in Islam is stoning if the perpetrator is married, and one hundred lashes and banishment for one year if he is not married and no punishment for the victim”. It is further cleared by the word of Allah (The recompense of those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and do mischief in the land is only that they shall be killed or crucified or their hands and their feet be cut off from opposite sides, or be exiled from the land. That is their disgrace in this world, and a great torment is theirs in the Hereafter) (Al-Ma’idah 5: 33) The fact of the roles and responsibilities of women has never been denied under the debate of the rights of women but these are the core issues which are to be seen by the society. The women can never be equal to men no matter how much they strive towards this goal but they are to be given their basic rights and not treated like robots which are made to follow orders and feel nothing. 1.5 million missing black men

n analysis in The Times — “1.5 Million Missing Black Men” — showed that more than one in every six black men in the 24-to-54 age group has disappeared from civic life, mainly because they died young or are locked away in prison. This means that there are only 83 black men living outside of jail for every 100 black women — in striking contrast to the white population, where men and women are about equal in numbers. This astounding shortfall in black men translates into lower marriage rates, more out-of-wedlock births, a greater risk of poverty for families and, by extension, less stable communities. The missing men should be a source of concern to political leaders and policy makers everywhere. While the 1.5 million number is startling, it actually understates the severity of the crisis that has befallen African-American men since the collapse of the manufacturing and industrial centers, which was quickly followed by the “war on drugs” and mass imprisonment, which drove up the national prison population more than sevenfold beginning in the 1970s. In addition to the “missing,” millions more are shut out of society, or are functionally missing, because of the

shrinking labor market for low-skilled workers, racial discrimination or sanctions that prevent millions who have criminal convictions from getting all kinds of jobs. At the same time, the surge in imprisonment has further stigmatized blackness itself, so that black men and boys who have never been near a jail now have to fight the presumption of criminality in many aspects of day-to-day life — in encounters with police, in schools, on the streets and on the job. The data on missing African-American men is not particularly new. Every census for the last 50 years has shown the phenomenon. In earlier decades, premature death played a larger role than it does today. But since the 1980s, the rising number of black men who were spared premature death was more than offset by the growing number shipped off to prison, many for nonviolent drug offenses. The path to that catastrophe was paved by what the sociologist William Julius Wilson described as “the disappearance of work,” which devastated formerly coherent neighborhoods. As deindustrialization got underway, earnings declined, neighborhoods grew poorer and businesses moved to the suburbs, beyond the reach of inner city residents. As Mr. Wilson wrote in his

1996 book, “When Work Disappears,” for the first time in the 20th century, most adults in many poor inner-city neighborhoods were not working. Joblessness became the norm, creating a “nonworking class,” that lived in segregated areas where most residents could not find jobs or had given up looking. In Chicago, where, Mr. Wilson carried out his research, employers wrote off the poor by not advertising in places where they could see the ads. The situation was so grave in 1996 that he recommended the resurrection of a Works Progress Administration-like strategy, under which the government would provide public employment to every American over 18 who wanted it. The stigmatization of blackness presents an enormous obstacle, even to small boys. Last year, for example, the Department of Education reported that black children were far more likely to be suspended from school — even from preschool — than white children. Federal cases also show higher rates of public school suspensions for minority students than for white students for identical behavior, suggesting that racial discrimination against black males starts very early in life. The sociologist Devah Pager, a Har-

vard professor who has meticulously researched the effect of race on hiring policies, has also shown that stereotypes have a powerful effect on job possibilities. In one widely cited study, she sent carefully selected test applicants with equivalent résumés to apply for low-level jobs with hundreds of employers. Ms. Pager found that criminal convictions for black men seeking employment were virtually impossible to overcome in many contexts, partly because convictions reinforced powerful, longstanding stereotypes. The stigma of a criminal record was less damaging for white testers. In fact, those who said that they were just out of prison were as likely to be called back for a second interview as black men who had no criminal history at all. “Being black in America today is just about the same as having a felony conviction in terms of one’s chances of finding a job,” she wrote in her book, “Marked: Race, Crime and Finding Work in an Era of Mass Incarceration.” In recent months, the many grievous cases of unarmed black men and boys who were shot dead by the police — now routinely captured on video — show how the presumption of criminality, poverty and social isolation threatens lives every day in all corners of this country. — Courtacy NY Times

‘Government to support investment in IT sector’

ISLAMABAD: Minister of State for Information Technology Mrs Anusha Rahman Tuesday said that Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB) would extend full support to National Technology Group (NTG) in its new endeavour to invest in Pakistan. She was addressing a seminar organized by NTG, a Saudi company, here. NTG has announced to invest millions of dollars in Pakistan, providing a good opportunity to mid-sized IT companies here to grow with access to both capital and new markets. The seminar was attended by PSEB Managing Director Asim Shahryar Husain, senior management of NTG, Ministry of Information Technology (IT) and PSEB, and many executives of IT companies of Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Anusha Rahman said her ministry's vision was to put an accelerated digitization ecosystem in place to enable socioeconomic development, to expand Pakistan's knowledge-based economy, and to spur the economic growth. She said that Pakistan was an attractive destination for IT and telecom investment because of market's size and availability of skilled IT resources.

Moreover, the ministry had planned to hold second round of spectrum auction later this year, she added. Asim Shahryar Hussain said that Pakistan's IT remittances were expected to exceed half a billion dollars during 2014-15 whereas exports were estimated to reach $ 2 billion a year which was growth of 35 % over last year. He said Pakistani IT companies had not been able to reach their full potential because of limited financing and marketing. Earlier, in his presentation, NTG MD Ibrahim Alzeer said that the company was the largest ICT (information and communications technology) conglomerate in Saudi Arabia with annual revenue of more than 2 billion Saudi Riyals and over 20 specialized subsidiaries at home, Gulf countries, Egypt, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Turkey. nancing (WHR), value chain financing, Islamic agri-finance models, and automation of credit appraisal processes", he remarked. In particular, he said WHR financing will facilitate banks in collateralization of agricultural produce for provision of financial services to small farmers. "On the other hand, it will help in creating price transparency and encourage private sector investment in the commodity sector. These will help in revamping the obsolete agri commodity management system prevailing in our country, necessary for ensuring food security and reducing commodity waste. On the successful completion of the pilot, I congratulate SBP and stakeholders", he remarked. Sikandar Hayat Khan Bosan, Minister for National Food Security and Research, who co-chaired the inaugural session, while appreciating the steps taken by SBP to promote agriculture financing, stated that focus on sustainable agriculture is imperative to meet the increasing food demand of a growing population worldwide. He emphasized that the large scale prosperity cannot be accomplished without channelizing resources including financial services, for the benefit of smallholder farmers. –APP

Sindh atop among power bills defaulters

ISLAMABAD: The Sindh government

and private consumers in the province owe maximum amount payable in terms of electricity bills and the matter lingers on despite repeated requests, Minister for Water and Power Khawaja Muhammad Asif informed National Assembly on Tuesday. Responding to a point of order by MNA Ayaz Soomro from Sindh, the minister said, in total Rs 66 billion worth electricity bills are outstanding with the Sindh government departments as well as private consumers. "We made repeated efforts and asked Sindh government to identify as to which amount is payable against its departments and which against the private

consumers and only Rs nine billion were reconciled," he said. "The apathy is that even out of this reconciled amount of Rs nine billion, the Sindh government only paid Rs 600 million," he added and once again requested the PPPP members in the House to persuade their government in the province to pay outstanding dues. As Ayaz Soomro had raised the issue of 18 hours load shedding in Larkana, the minister offered the member to go to Larkana and anywhere else where there is a problem but said, the power sector can only survive when the government institutions and consumers pay their bills regularly. He said the problem started from

PPPP regime when the then government entered into agreement with nine power plants guaranteeing them payment every month come what may. "But, the issue of payment of bills remained unaddressed and now both the DESCOs in Sindh are at the verge of disaster due to non payment by consumers and uninterrupted payments to nine companies. We are forced to purchase power from these power plants." He said the situation is worse and the members might be knowing that Police Stations and WASA like departments are selling power to residents from their connections. So we asked the provincial government to inform us about their connection

and after receiving the list from provincial government about its departments we disconnected remaining connection. "This resulted in a hue and cry but nobody assisted us to recover the defaulted amount from the government departments and the consumers." He stated that a reconciliation process was started with Sindh consumers and the Sindh government and its institutions had taken responsibility for payment of outstanding dues to both the DESCOs. However, he said, the matter still lingers on and I once again request the members and Leader of the Opposition Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah to ensure payment for these two DESCOs. He also informed that K Electric has

claimed a hefty amount from federal government. However, this amount is payable by Karachi Water Board yet the K Electric has stopped Rs 50 billion payment to Sui Southern. "We are ready to share the burden of the provincial government but at least they should pay a sufficient amount from outstanding Rs 66 billion," he said and added, no other province owes that much amount as owed by the Sindh province. On this Leader of the Opposition, Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah said, it is just demand of the Minister that the amount reconciled must be paid by the Sindh government. –APP

Granting domicile to FATA minorities lauded AHMAD NABI KHYBER AGENCY: The minorities of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on Tuesday welcomed the decision of government to provide domicile certificates to them and declared it a good omen for development of the minorities residing in the tribal belt. For decades the religious minorities have been living in FATA but due to lack of domicile certificates, they could not avail job opportunities or buy any property, tribal minority members remarked. President All Minorities FATA, Arshad Maseeh thanked all the segments who assisted them to get the

privileged status. “Owing the right of having domicile certificate would not only grant us recognition of permanent residents of FATA but will also help us avail job opportunities in other parts of the country,” he said. Miss Sundas, a Christian female 1st year student of Government Girls High Secondary School, Landikotal showed great appreciation over the decision and said that the government has granted them permanent status in FATA. “The minority students would get admission in the best educational institutions across the country. The community would get their own quota in jobs and other incentives,” she opined. When chairperson Human Rights

Commission of Pakistan (HRCP), Sher Mohammad Khan was asked for his comments on the matter, he welcomed the government’s initiative for providing the domicile certificate which was their basic right. “Since pre-Pakistan era, the minority community has been residing in the tribal belt and after creation of Pakistan; they became the citizen of it despite they were restrained of basic document which was against the human rights declaration,” he remarked. He conferred the right of domicile to the minority in FATA has ended the discriminatory behavior towards them which is appreciable step by the government.

No headway in Sabeen Mahmud murder probe

KARACHI: Investigators have found

no match for casings of bullets that killed prominent human rights activist Sabeen Mahmud, dashing hopes for quick answers to a murder is raising fears for the safety of dissenting voices. Gunmen on a motorcycle attacked Mahmud late last Friday in Karachi, as she was leaving her cafe The Second Floor (T2F), where she held art exhibitions and talks. She had just hosted a discussion on disappearances in Balochistan, where the army is fighting a separatist insurgency, and, rights workers say, overseeing a campaign of killing opponents. The army denies rights abuses. Investigators recovered bullet casings from the scene but drew a blank. "That suggests that a new group or new weapon has been used in the killing," a law enforcement official involved in the case, who declined to be identified because the topic is sensitive, said late on Monday. Police say their only witness is Mahmud's mother, who was with her and was wounded. Investigators suspect the killers had a back-up

team of two men on a motorcycle and police are poring over CCTV footage. Investigators desperate for clues are monitoring social media in hopes that loose talk could provide a lead, said another senior law enforcement official. Authorities had earlier blocked the talk, titled “Unsilencing Balochistan”, when it was scheduled at the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) earlier this month. Mahmud had told friends that officials of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency visited her in 2013 to ask about her work and finances, the law enforcement official said. She had recently asked friends if she should go ahead with the Balochistan talk, he added. The army has condemned Mahmud's killing, saying intelligence agents would help in the investigation. However, human rights workers have not been reassured. "There's a lot of fear among the people, about whoever speaks out about Balochistan, what's going to happen," said Rukhsana Shama of the rights group Bedari. "It's easy to point fingers at the agencies but no one

knows." 'Third party' For many here, the separatists in Balochistan pose a more alarming threat than militants. The military says the rebels get help from India, but India denies this allegation. Security concerns in the province took on added urgency days before Mahmud was killed, when China's President Xi Jinping unveiled projects worth up to $46 billion for an economic corridor anchored there. The army has vowed to crush the insurgency. The first law enforcement official said Mahmud's killers might have taken advantage of the tension between the authorities and Mahmud over her Balochistan activism. "Our hunch is that some third party exploited the standoff," he said, suggesting India. Security and government officials point fingers at India's spy agency for behind inexplicable violence, but have is dangerous to national security, said not produced concrete evidence to said. Suspicion that Pakistan's intelli- political commentator and journalist, support this assertion. This case is unlikely to be solved if any security gence was somehow responsible for Moeed Pirzada. "It is of vital importance that intelliagency is behind it, the first official the killing, in a bid to silence dissent

gence agencies work hard to expose the murderers, to restore trust between the state and its most aware citizens," Pirzada added. –FP Monitoring

Greek, Turkish Cypriot leaders to initiate peace talks NICOSIA: Greek Cypriots unveiled measures to boost trust across the ethnically divided island and announced that rival leaders would hold their first meeting in months on May 2. Peace talks between Cyprus's estranged Greek and Turkish communities stalled last October, and Saturday's meeting will be the first since moderate Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci swept to power in elections on April 26. Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades, who attends peace talks in his capacity as leader of Greek Cypriots, said that he would offer 'unilateral confidence building measures' to Turkish Cypriots to boost negotiations. "It is my strong conviction that a climate of trust should be created which will assist (peace) negotiations," he said in a statement. Confidence building measures included the handover of maps detailing the location of 28 mine fields the Greek Cypriot military laid before a 1974 war which now fall in Turkish-Cypriot controlled territory. It would also cede the administration of Turkish Cypriot places of worship now in the Greek Cypriot south to Efkaf, a Turkish Cypriot religious foundation and trust, Anastasiades said. Kabul committed to close ties with India: Ghani

NEW DELHI: Afghan president Ashraf Ghani on Tuesday sought to reassure Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Kabul was committed to its close relationship with New Delhi despite warming ties with Pakistan. Afghanistan's president called on Tuesday for regional cooperation to defeat militants, saying he wants to “make Afghanistan a graveyard of terror” but needs help from India, Pakistan and other neighbours. He made these comments after meeting Narendra Modi. Ghani arrived in India late Monday on a three-day state visit designed to patch up relations with its neighbour, which

have frayed since Ghani assumed office in September. “India and Afghanistan have [a] million ties,” Ghani told reporters at a joint media briefing in the Indian capital following talks with Modi. “We are the battlefield. We are fighting on behalf of our friends from India to Russia,” Ghani said in a speech to the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA), a government think-tank. Ghani reached out to Pakistan and China within months of his election as president, embarking on state visits to both countries before visiting India, causing concern in New Delhi. “Afghanistan was

a roundabout where ideas and goods flowed to Central and South Asia and our vision today is based on that potential,” he said after arriving in India. Afghanistan's recent military and strategic engagement with Pakistan in its fight against Taliban militants was also seen as a major policy shift from president Hamid Karzai's government, which accused Islamabad of destabilising Kabul. Ghani's maiden visit to India as Afghan leader is also aimed at shoring up Indian investment ─ he will meet business organisations on Wednesday in a bid to attract private sector investment into his war-ravaged country.

India has invested over $2 billion in infrastructure projects and the social sector in the country in recent years but has stayed away from engaging militarily in the 13-year-long war. New Delhi recently rejected a request to supply some military equipment but did deliver three unarmed helicopters this month. “We share Afghanistan's pain over persisting terrorism and extremist violence that destroy lives and derail progress,” Modi said in remarks distributed by his office, adding that India would continue to help build the Afghan military and had delivered three Cheetal helicopters. —FP Monitoring

pounded Shiite rebels and their allies overnight and early Tuesday in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, and in the south; while officials loyal to the country's exiled government criticized past attempts by the coalition to airdrop weapons to pro government fighters in Yemen. Since March 26, an alliance of the kingdom and several mostly Gulf Arab countries has been carrying out daily airstrikes against Yemen's Shiite rebels, known as Houthis, and their allied army units loyal to ousted President Ali Abdullah Saleh. So far, the US backed campaign has failed to reign in the Iran backed rebels who last year captured Sanaa and much of the country's north. Overnight, multiple explosions shook Sanaa as warplanes dropped bombs, targeting several rebel held army camps, trucks carrying weapons and houses turned into weapons' depots for the Houthis, according to residents and officials. The residents, speaking requesting anonymity because they feared for their own safety, said heavy smoke blanketed Sanaa. In the city's northern district of Al-Nahda, several strikes hit large caches of weapons stored inside villas of two top Shiite rebel leaders, officials said. The airstrikes also continued Tuesday in the southern port city of Aden, where poorly trained and lightly armed pro government fighters have been resisting a siege by the Houthis, and also in the western city of Dhale. Fighters battling the rebels on the ground around Aden and Dhale have said that they are running out of ammunition, according to local officials loyal to President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, now in exile in Saudi Arabia. Past attempts at airdropping weapons to pro government fighters have failed and the arms have often ended up falling into the wrong hands, including those of al-Qaida's Yemen branch, the terror network's most dangerous offshoot, pro Hadi officials said. Mohammed Maram, head of the presidential office, held a meeting in Aden with governors of four southern provinces and top military commanders, including Maj. Gen. Ali Nasser Hadi, who described the past airlifts as a "failed and unorganized process." —FP Monitoring

Nepalis dig through quake rubble for survivors as toll may touch 10,000

JHARIBAR/SINDHUPALCHOWK: People stranded in remote villages and towns across Nepal were still waiting for aid and relief to arrive on Tuesday, four days after a devastating earthquake destroyed buildings and roads and killed more than 4,600 people. The government has yet to assess the full scale of the damage wrought by Saturday's 7.9 magnitude quake, unable to reach many mountainous areas despite aid supplies and personnel pouring in from around the world. Prime Minister Sushil Koirala told Reuters the death toll could reach 10,000, as information of damage from far-flung villages and towns has yet to come in. That would surpass the 8,500 who died in a 1934 earthquake, the last disaster on this scale to hit the Himalayan nation. "The government is doing all it can for rescue and relief on a war footing," Koirala said. "It is a challenge and a very difficult hour for Nepal." In Jharibar, a village in the hilly

Gorkha district of Nepal close to the quake's epicenter, Sunthalia dug for hours in the rubble of her collapsed home on Saturday to recover the bodies of two of her children, a 10-year-old daughter and eight-year-old son. In Barpak, further north, rescue helicopters were unable to find a place to land. On Tuesday, soldiers had started to make their way overland, first by bus, then by foot. Army helicopters also circled over Laprak, another village in the district best known as the home of Gurkha soldiers. A local health official estimated that 1,600 of the 1,700 houses there had been razed. Helicopters dropped food packets in the hope that survivors could gather them up. In Sindhupalchowk, about 3.5 hours by road northeast of Kathmandu, the earthquake was followed by landslides, killing 1,182 people and seriously injuring 376. A local official said he feared many more were trapped and more aid was needed. —FP Monitoring
