BETTY KELLY KENNING SWIM COMPLEX NASSAU, BAHAMAS
HONOURING
JOHN BRADLEY SR. 1947 - 2021
It is indeed an honor and privilege for me to extend congratulations to the Bahamas Aquatic Federation (BAF) on the hosting of its 50th Annual Bahamas National Swimming Competition 2022.
Swimming is gaining in popularity in The Bahamas and is quickly becoming a first tier sport. So, I am delighted, on behalf of the Ministry of Youth, Sport & Culture to welcome the swimming fraternity, families and friends to The Bahamas National Swimming Championships.
This event is the largest swim competition for our local Bahamian swimmers, who continue to perform remarkably well on a consistent basis. We are certain to see some wonderful competition, as we are just off the heels of the magnificent Carifta Swimming Competition. This meet, features The Bahamas’ top elite swimmers and our future swimmers. I am certain that the level of competition, displayed at this national swimming championships, will allow our swimmers to qualify for major regional and international swim meets. I encourage all of the participants to swim as hard as you can and wish you all great success.
As we look forward to 2023 when The Bahamas will endeavor to become the first country, in the history of the Carifta Swimming Championships, to win five consecutive titles. The task will be challenging, but not impossible for the four-time consecutive Carifta Champions and seven time winners. The team over the years has been a resilient one, and has made The Bahamas extremely proud.
On behalf of the Ministry of Youth, Sport & Culture we wish to congratulate all the competitors and the administrative branch on a successful event. I hope that records will be broken and lots of long lasting friendships will be forged.
Congratulations once again, and may God continue to bless you.
Congratulations to The Bahamas Aquatics Federation and all of the participants on the 50th Annual Bahamas National Swimming Championships and 4th consecutive CARIFTA swimming championship win.
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2022 Bahamas Aquatics Federation 50 th National Swimming Championships. This Championship has been sanctioned by FINA, the governing body for aquatic sports, as a qualifier for the 2023 World Championships and I thank the entire Nationals Championships Organizing Committee for their efforts in overcoming all of the obstacles and pulling together to ensure that we have this opportunity to celebrate our swimmers. I can’t believe that these 50 years have gone so quickly and can only imagine what the next 50 years of Aquatics sports will become.
The Bahamas has witnessed so many historic accomplishments by our Federation with the highlight this year being the successful defense of our CARIFTA Swimming Championship. We are the only country to have won CARIFTA for four (4) consecutive Championships and six (6) times over the last seven (7) years, an amazing accomplishment by any standard. On behalf of the Executive Committee, I thank our coaching staff, the athletes, the management and medical team for their yeoman efforts in crystalizing our vision of being positioned as the premier sporting Federation and single country to achieve this accomplishment. We are well positioned to repeat as CARIFTA Champions in 2023 and while we will have to strengthen some of our age groups, we are returning to CARIFTA with 90% of the 2022 team.
The Global Pandemic has wreaked havoc on the many sporting communities and has paralyzed efforts to host global championships. As an example, the Olympic Games were delayed in 2020 to 2021 and FINA has had to quickly adjust and realign many of its global competitions. As an example, many of these meets are being held every year, instead of every other year until we move beyond the new normal and I look forward to The Bahamas having strong representation at the World Championships being held in late 2022, and in 2023, and 2024. We stood out at the Abu Dhabi World Short Course Championships – Joanna Evans advanced to two final events and is determined to be back on the circuit representing The Bahamas in the near future.
We did not host a National Championship in 2020 due to the Pandemic, but the resiliency of our team made it possible to secure the necessary government approvals to hold these Championships last year and again this year. Along these lines, I recognize the hard work of our Covid-19 Task force, the Coaching Staff, and the Executive Members for the sacrifices they continue to make to ensure our young athletes can continue to compete. The normal Covid-19 protocols remain for these Championships and I encourage all of our members, parents, and supporters to invariably follow these guidelines – your compliance makes it a possibility to organize and hold this event.
Notwithstanding the fact that we do not have a title sponsor, these Nationals will be very special. Our committee has been able to attract many smaller sponsors and I thank them all for their hard work in this area. Our athletes appreciate you all! We lost many of our key contributors in recent years – Bert Bell, Sue Coleby and our Vice President, John Bradley. Although they are not physically with us, their contributions will forever remain. Through their efforts, many adults have learnt to swim, many of our swimmers have won CARIFTA, CCCAN, CAC, PAN AM and even NCAA titles, and many will have broken hearts for a very long time. I want to especially thank the Family of John Bradley for lending him to us for so many years and participating in his contributions to participating in every National Championship since 2005. We have explored many ways to commemorate John’s contribution and our first step is to hold these 2022 Championships in his honour.
I recognize MAKO Aquatics Club, led by Coach Travano McPhee, for repeating as National Champions in 2022, their third consecutive victory. It’s not easy to win these Championships and it appears that MAKO will not have an easy task of repeating this year. Along these lines, I wish all participating clubs the best of luck and encourage their swimmers to swim hard and to leave their very best performances in the pool.
The Academic All Bahamas Awards recognizes student athletes who have obtained a grade point average of 3.5 or higher, have represented the Bahamas on a national team in the last year or achieved a BAF national time standard or higher and will be competing at the National Championships. The Bahamas Aquatics Federation are proud of the academic achievements of the student athletes.
