The Governor’s Changes 2008, Texas Governor Rick Perry urged about 60 regents of Texas colleges and universities, all of whom he appointed, to reform higher education by shifting how public money is spent, how professors are rewarded and how success is graded. Perry proposed seven “breakthrough solutions.”

1. Post student satisfaction ratings and other information to publicly recognize the best teachers.

2. Award bonuses to professors, teaching assistants and other instructors based on students’ ratings of how well a course delivered on its promises.

3. Split research and teaching budgets, paying teachers for the number of students they teach and paying researchers according to research dollars they receive.

4. Require evidence of teaching skills before awarding tenure to faculty members.

5. Provide each student with a personalized ‘learning contract’ before he or she enrolls that discloses the graduation rate and starting salary for the average student in that major with equivalent SAT scores.

6. Provide each in-state student with a voucher of sorts—a scholarship funded by legislative appropriations that currently go directly to public colleges and universities.

7. Support efforts to create a new national accrediting agency that would focus on results, such as knowledge gained between the freshman and senior years.

(Austin American-Statesman, May 22, 2008) Those proposals were met with mixed reactions by the regents and universal concern and disdain by faculty across the state.

This April, Texas Monthly took strong exception to Perry’s proposals. The magazine stated, “Rick Perry is waging an undeclared war on higher education—in particular, on the state’s two flagship institutions, the University of Texas and his own alma mater, Texas A&M. He has delegated higher education policy to the Texas

Public Policy Foundation, an Austin-based conservative think tank, which has produced an ideological blueprint for how the state’s universities should be governed.

The objectives are accountability, transparency, and productivity.”

Several of the these recommendations have already been put into practice at Texas A&M, which caused 22 “distinguished alumni” to write an “Open Letter to the Texas A&M University Community” in early May, criticizing the reforms advocated by the governor and an influential campaign contributor as “naïve … proposals from inexperienced individuals.”

Shortly thereafter, Mike McKinney, chancellor of the A&M system, resigned.

Raider fans will remember McKinney for an episode that took place in Lubbock after a Tech-A&M football game.

Sen. Judith Zaffirini, a Democrat and chair of the Senate’s higher education committee, was quoted as saying, “Rick Perry doesn’t understand higher education. He doesn’t have a graduate degree, and he graduated a long time ago with a major in something like agriculture. I have a Ph.D., so I understand the value of research and teaching. He just doesn’t understand it.”

On May 24 the editorial board of The Bryan Eagle wrote an editorial titled “Stop Meddling with A&M.” The editorial was especially critical of the proposal (No. 1) to measure the value of a teacher by dividing his or her total salary and benefits by the number of students taught in the past 12 months and factor in average student satisfaction ratings.

Most faculty members will tell you that students’ ratings are not always reliable.

Teachers who challenge their students and have high expectations may not be popular. How do you compare ratings from “monster” classes with small classes? Is the course a required course or an elective?

The separation of teaching and research was also criticized.

“Research is critical, not only to the universities, but also to this nation. And it isn’t separate from teaching. By interact-

ing with great researchers in the classroom and the laboratory, university students help develop their independent thinking skills and learn ways to help advance science and society,” the editorial stated.

According to Erick Erickson (Times of Texas), “Recent polls show that Texas voters overwhelmingly support these higher education reforms. After all, who could possibly be against making teaching a higher priority, reducing university operating costs, and making universities more transparent and accountable?

“University administrators, tenured professors, and alumni elitists—that’s who. “ Perry recently called university research the “lifeblood of our state’s innovation” and trumpeted the hundreds of millions of dollars the state has put toward technology and cancer research.

But he said universities should be more efficient with resources, noting that fewer than three in 10 students graduate in four years. Meanwhile, the average semester cost for students has climbed 72 percent since 2003.

If Perry’s concerns are about “cost,” Texas Tech President Guy Bailey and his administration are ahead of the curve.

Bailey has addressed concerns about cost by developing five initiatives: 1.Consolidation of low producing degree programs (faculty-led initiative).

2. Asking department chairs and faculty to increase their courses to full capacity.

3. Aligning allocation of resources with generation of resources. This effort is called Responsibility Centered Management, which is a form of budgeting that ties the allocation of revenue to the generation of revenue. The more revenue a unit generates, the more money it receives.

This form of budgeting incentivizes enrollment growth, externally funded research, and other forms of revenue generation and provides disincentives for the inefficient use of resources.

4. Making hard choices about administrative costs resulting in a reduction of the number of vice presidents.

5. Outsourcing areas of operation where savings could be realized.

Texas Tech is currently striving to become a Tier One institution in this state. The criteria for achieving this status include the following: *Research expenditures in excess of $40 million for two consecutive years *Doctoral degrees awarded must top 200 in each of the previous two years, 2010-2014 *Membership in Association of Research Libraries or housing a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa—both *High-quality graduate-level programs as determined by Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

Taylor Eighmy, Ph.D.,vice president for research at Texas Tech, recently wrote an article in Discoveries Magazine entitled “The Value of a Research University.”

is uniformly recognized is that research universities provide knowledge-focused benefits to the business community, an educated workforce familiar with the international marketplace, technical consulting and counseling, and management assistance.

“Texas Tech’s impact on the Lubbock area’s economy also is notable...The research produced at Texas Tech generates about $155 million in economic output, $69 million in household earnings and 1,318 jobs.”

Eighmy adds, “Research universities also play essential roles in promoting culture and the arts. Texas Tech offers a wide variety of music, dance and theatre performances featuring our own students and faculty and internationally known performers. Nationally known speakers and poets are also brought to campus, and significant art exhibits are available through the Museum of Texas Tech University and the School of Art. Texas Tech holds the licenses for both the Public Broadcasting System televi-

sion station and National Public Radio radio station in Lubbock.”

For the most part Perry’s seven recommendations would make good sense to taxpayers. However, the devil is in the details. A great deal of the pushback has come when the details are laid out.

I look for these seven “breakthrough solutions” to be modified, especially the ones dealing with student evaluations and research. Meaningful and cutting-edge research is critical in higher education and distinguishes top-level universities from medium range ones.

Are there some frivolous research projects? Probably. However, beauty is often times in the eye of the beholder. A research project that may seem foolish to some may be, in fact, meaningful to others.

The governor has made his point about cost cutting and accountability. But the legislature and boards of regents hopefully will continue to support research at Texas colleges and universities and resist any pressure by the governor or anyone else to diminish the value of research.

A Chance to Excel, the Opportunity to Give Back communities in the 1930s, Jerry and Lois Matejek both grew up in an environment where family was the ultimate priority, and like many families back then, that sometimes left little room for a college education.

Jerry and Lois later married and raised their four children in Midland, Texas, with those same, strong values with one exception—they assured each one of their kids the opportunity to attend college.

For Robert Matejek, one of those four children, the time he spent studying engineering at Texas Tech University was incredibly valuable and special to him.

“I realized the importance of an education, and I believe it’s the major reason I have been successful,” he said. “My feeling is anyone who wants an education should have the opportunity to get one.”

Matejek’s successful career as an engineer afforded him the opportunity to help others. One of the ways Robert has found to give back to Texas Tech is through a bequest in his estate plan. He selected a personal bequest to maximize the impact of his giving. The planned gift allows him to leave a permanent legacy at Texas Tech that provides educational opportunities for others.

Matejek’s gift will give back to Texas Tech in perpetuity.

“My gift is endowed, and therefore, it will last forever,” he added.

He chose to give to Texas Tech because of the quality of education he received. He said the Whitacre College of Engineering at Texas Tech University created a good balance of learning from books in the classroom with practical experience in the field.

“It’s exactly what makes the Texas Tech engineer so appealing when he or she graduates,” he said. “A Tech engineer walks across the stage ready to contribute to the industry.”

NEWS On March 31 the Texas Tech University System Board of Regents approved a cap for tuition and fees for the fall 2011 and spring 2012 semesters.

The total increase of both tuition and fees for a student taking 15 credit hours will be a maximum of $239, or 5.9 percent.

Texas Tech University President Guy Bailey said some increase in tuition may be possible to help offset some of the state-requested budget cuts and to allow the university to continue to maintain and elevate the quality of its undergraduate and graduate programs.

Despite this increase in tuition and fees, Tech remains one of the best values for a higher education. Since 2003, before the implementation of tuition deregulation, Tech had one of the lowest percentages of increase in total academic costs of any of the major research universities in the state and the country.

In a Fall 2010 survey conducted by The Wall Street Journal, Texas Tech ranked No. 18 among the top 25 schools that produce the best graduates, and No. 2 with the lowest out-of-state tuition.

More than 3,275 Texas Tech University students graduated May 13 and 14 during five ceremonies held at the United Spirit Arena. Texas Tech University

System Chancellor Kent Hance was the keynote speaker at four of the five ceremonies. United States Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) was the keynote speaker for the Texas Tech School of Law Hooding Ceremony.

The office of the Vice President for Research recently launched the first issue of its newest publication, Texas Tech Discoveries: Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity.

Texas Tech Discoveries is an online-based, bi-annual publication used to inform the community and the world about the outstanding academics and research at Texas Tech. The publication includes profiles in excellence and discovery, featuring Texas Tech distinguished researchers; graduate and undergraduate students and alumni; the latest research stories and news briefs; book announcements; accomplishments and awards; and interactive media.

Memorial Day weekend, an online exhibit was launched by the Vietnam Center and Archive to honor Texas Tech graduates who served in the Vietnam War. Amy Mondt, the

reference archivist for the Vietnam Center and Archive who is overseeing the project, notes that she hopes to have a page featuring a biography and photo of every graduate who served.

The Office of Communications and Marketing manages the main university social media accounts listed in the ranking (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube). The team also maintains Texas Tech Today and the Guns Up Gallery, which were also recognized.

PEOPLE Five Texas Tech University researchers received $1.2 million from Office of Naval Research for better explosive detection.

The four-year $1.2 million grant from the Office of Naval Research funds a project titled “Resolving the Complexity of Hot Spots caused by Weak Energy Concentration and Coupling in Composite Energetic Materials.”

Recipients of the competitive grant are Louis Hope-Weeks, Ph.D., a professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry; Brandon Weeks, Ph.D., an associate professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering; Greg McKenna, Ph.D., a Horn Professor and holder of the John R. Bradford Chair in Engineering in the Department of Chemical Engineering; and Michelle Pantoya, Ph.D., a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. on May 26, Officials at Texas Tech University named Darby Dickerson the next dean of the School of Law. Dickerson began her position July 29.

Dickerson came to Texas Tech from Stetson University in Florida, where she joined the faculty in 1995 as an assistant professor and moved through the ranks to assume the deanship in 2004.

Dickerson is an accomplished teacher and scholar, winning Stetson’s top awards in both areas. She authored a leading book on legal citation, and writes and speaks regularly on a variety of topics related to law and higher education, including campus safety and security; risk and crisis management; academic integrity; alcohol and other drug prevention; cyberspace issues and student mental health.

In 2007 she was elected to the prestigious American Law Institute.

Dickerson also holds a leadership position within the American Bar Association and the Association of the American Law Schools. In 2010 she was named Business Woman of the Year by the St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce.

Nolan Ryan

The National Ranching Heritage Center will honor baseball great Nolan Ryan at its annual 34th Annual National Golden Spur Award banquet on Sept. 17 at 6 p.m. at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center.

Each year, the National Golden Spur Award recognizes the lifetime achievements of the nation’s top rancher. This unique award, the only national distinction of its kind, recognizes outstanding contributions to the ranching and livestock industry. More than bringing prestige to an individual, the award spotlights the humanistic and scientific contributions of the livestock and ranching industries. The award is a joint recognition by some of the industry’s leading organizations, among them the American Quarter Horse Association, National Cattlemen’s Foundation, Ranching Heritage Association, Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, Texas Cattle Feeders Association and Texas Farm Bureau.

Ryan, of Georgetown, Texas, is receiving the award in recognition of his positive portrayal of ranching and his public acknowledgement of it as his chosen way of life in numerous national publications, interviews and product endorsements. Ryan is now president and CEO of the Texas Rangers baseball club. He is also a cattleman, businessman and member of several ranching organizations.

» Through the arches The American Meat Science Association honored J Chance Brooks, Ph.D., Department of Animal and Food Sciences, with its 2011 AMSA Distinguished Teaching Award. Brooks is an associate professor in the Department of

Animal and Food Sciences and is a member of the International Center for Food Industry Excellence. A graduate of Tech and Texas A&M University, he has been recognized by peers and students as an outstanding teacher. As an associate professor of meat science, Brooks teaches undergraduate and graduate courses, where his teaching evaluations consistently rank him among the best in the university.

Brooks continues to find innovative ways to teach, including organizing an opportunity for students to showcase products developed in his Processed Meats class using a food product show. He also created the first Honors course in meat science at Tech in 2005.

In addition, he’s served as a faculty mentor in the Honor’s College Undergraduate Research Program.

BRIEFLY The National Ranching Heritage Center at Texas Tech University will host an oldfashioned Harvest Festival from 4 to 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 28, during the 5th annual Heritage Halloween event.

Trick-or-treaters may fill their bags with period-correct treats as they visit historic structures at the NRHC. For example, at the 1909 Barton House, volunteers will be handing out Hershey’s Kisses, which were developed in 1906. At the 1886 Las Escarbadas division of the XIT Ranch, trick-or-treaters will receive Tootsie Rolls, which were developed in 1896.

Hayrides through the park will be offered for $1 a ride. There will also be a cakewalk at the McLaughlin Arbor and a fall craft area in the Four Sixes Barn.

The event is free.

received the Medal for Records Management and Archives Career of Vietnam on June 17, for his contribution to the archives and relations between the archives institution of both countries.

This award is a culmination of nearly a decade of cooperative archival projects and exchanges between Maxner, Vietnam Center founder Jim Reckner, and Vi Thi Minh Huong, the director general of the State Records and Archives Department of Vietnam.

for students from major Texas cities who have finished their junior years in high school. Participants gain insights into the architecture profession, its culture, and its fundamentals.

The Academy is funded in large part by donations from alumni who are practicing in the field of architecture. The donors from San Antonio are Rehler, Vaughn & Koone, Inc., Foster CM Group, Inc, Lake/Flato and The Architecture Foundation of San Antonio. This year, students from San Antonio spent the first week in the Alamo City visiting architecture firms and building sites. They also began the analysis and conceptual studies of a small project sited in San Antonio. During the second week, the students flew to Lubbock to work in the College of Architecture’s design labs on the Texas Tech campus, where they completed the design of their projects and built a model utilizing laser cutter technology. They presented their projects in San Antonio at the AIA offices at the end of the Academy.

I

n 1930, America was in the midst of The Depression, an economic downturn so severe that it defined the era. Steak was 20 cents a pound, a gallon of gas was 10 cents and a dozen eggs was 18 cents.

People did what little they could to enrich their lives: attended movies, read books and listened on their radios to baseball games and Fireside Chats. For many in America, attending college was an unattainable dream.

For Mary Gladys Gilbert West, Texas Tech class of 1930, attending college was within reach only because her family farmed close to a university.

“I had wanted to attend Baylor Female College in Belton, Texas,” says West. “But, my dad was a farmer and the beginnings of the Great Depression caused cotton prices to drop to five cents a pound. Going away was too expensive in those hard times. I was so thankful that Texas Tech was near and opened in the fall of 1925. I could still go to college!”

West holds a friendship quilt composed of squares made for and by close friends. Three of the squares are in honor of close friends and family who are Texas Tech graduates: her daughter-in-law Sherilyn West and also Mary Mathis '37 and Martha Mathis. Some of the squares are from friends she made while teaching school in New Mexico and family.

West was born in Blackwell, Texas (Nolan County), on Nov. 21, 1907. Growing up she lived in Sweetwater, Rochester, Spur and Lubbock.

“I graduated from Spur High School in May 1925,” she says. “Our family moved to Lubbock County the summer of 1925.

“There were no dormitories on campus the first few years it (Texas Tech) was open,” she says. “I lived at home and drove to attend classes at Tech.

We lived about five or six miles from campus, near where the intersection of Avenue P and 82nd Street is today.”

After her junior year, she taught high school for one year at Cooper schools in the Woodrow community, which is located in south Lubbock County.

“My salary there helped with my family and college expenses,” she says.

She returned to Texas Tech after that year and graduated in May 1930 with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education.

While at Tech, West learned to play the saxophone from Harry LaMaire, the band and orchestra director. LaMaire was the composer and arranger of “The Matador Song,” Texas Tech’s school song (the words were by R. C. Marshall).

“He had a group he called the Tech Saxophone Band, and I played in that group,” she recalls.

“Also I played the saxophone in the orchestra at First Baptist Church in Lubbock during my Tech years. Dr. Cunningham and Mrs. Doak were my English professors, Mr. Strehli was my Spanish professor, Dr. Gordon, my education professor and Dr. Harry Patton was my geology professor.”

West met fellow Red Raider Veda West in a math class the young women were taking.

“She became a good friend,” West says. “She invited me to visit her home in Lynn County. She had two sisters and two brothers. Later, I married one of her brothers, Jackson West, on Dec. 20, 1936.”

Between graduating from Tech in 1930 and marrying in 1936, she held high school teaching positions in a number of communities.

“After graduation I taught at Mt. Blanco near Crosbyton, Texas,” she notes. “As the Depression worsened, I could make a better salary teaching in New Mexico than Texas. I spent three years in Rogers, New Mexico, teaching English and Spanish from 1931-1934. They paid a salary of $120 a month.

When Texas raised their salaries a little, I came back to Texas. I still have my original teacher contract that I signed with O’Donnell Independent School District. They paid $97.50 per month in 1935.”

In 1938, West’s husband Jackson purchased a farm in Lubbock County approximately two miles north of the airport.

“For 66 years I watched Texas Tech make many changes,” she says. “It grew and expanded and became the large university that it is today. My son, Ray E., and his wife, Sherilyn (Billington) West, both graduated from Tech. I lived in Lubbock until 2004 when my vision became so poor I could not remain at home. I moved to Temple, Texas, to be near my daughter.

“I am still a big Red Raider fan and listen to the ball games when I can.”

opening new worlds: &the Alumni Association

E

very now and then, an opportunity for a merger arises that seems like such a perfect fit; sometimes it’s hard to understand why the two weren’t connected sooner. In many cases, such unions greatly enhance the qualities of both entities in a way that might have otherwise gone unnoticed. After all, think of great mergers such as movies and popcorn, fireworks and the Fourth of July and peanut butter and chocolate.

The Texas Tech Alumni Association recently was presented with the chance to add the Texas Tech chapter of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) to its own. Right from the start, many in the Alumni Association found this merger to be a win-win scenario for both institutions. While each organization will still operate independently and do its own fundraising,

both will now be given the chance to increase visibility, add value to their programs, and beef up their membership.

As Jim Douglass, associate vice president of the Alumni Association, puts it, “The Texas Tech Alumni Association National Board thought it was a great idea and a great fit with this addition to the Alumni Association’s existing programs.”

This optimistic perception wasn’t simply speculative on the Alumni Association’s part. With more than 100 programs in universities across the country such as Oklahoma state, Iowa State, the University of Arizona, Duke and, of course, Texas Tech, Douglass notes that the OLLI programs operating in conjunction with a university alumni association have proven to be a highly successful venture.

“We will be good for each other,” says Emma Carrasco, director of the Texas Tech chapter of OLLI. “It will be a noteworthy collaboration.”

Despite the recent excitement about the merger and the nationwide popularity of the OLLI program, there are many people who are not familiar with OLLI and its mission.

Bernard Osher, a patron of education and the arts, is known as “the quiet philanthropist.” In 1977, he started the Bernard Osher Foundation, which seeks to improve quality of life through support for higher education for adults age 50 and older.

Osher, through his foundation, began funding and setting the guidelines for these lifelong learning centers on university campuses across the country. And their numbers grew rapidly. It was in 2002 that a group led by Lubbock’s Louise Cummins approached Tech’s Division of Outreach and Distance Education about creating such a program. It would take the division’s objective of extended learning to the next level and allow older adults conveniently and inexpensively to attend interest-based classes in a college environment.

Based on the models of programs at other universities, the Outreach and Distance Education Division launched the Texas Tech Lifelong Learning Community in 2002.

The program’s popularity grew rapidly, with membership swelling to more than 500 and the program’s original 10 classes growing to more than 40 in a relatively short span of three years.

In recognition of this meteoric growth, the program received $100,000 in grants from the Osher Foundation for several years before receiving a one-time $1 million endowment from the same foundation in 2008. When the program received its endowment from the Osher Foundation, the name of the program changed to the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute to better reflect its association with the national program.

OLLI’s overall commitment of providing adults age 50-plus with extended education opportunities has never been stronger. While the program’s first few classes covered topics ranging from Tech’s art scene to often-overlooked sites of significance in Lubbock, a look at today’s diverse course offerings is mind-boggling: everything from Civil War medical practices to an analysis of the Beatles’ music, Shakespeare to contemporary art, Mesoamerican civilizations to current events.

Other popular classes include the Lunch and Learning series, Artist and Film series, Master’s Touch Gardening series and wine and cheese tastings.

Current and retired Texas Tech faculty teach most OLLI classes. Others are taught by local professionals, adding to the high quality of the content of the various courses.

While a few of these classes are for OLLI members only (annual membership fees are $50 per couple or $35 for singles), the vast majority are open to everyone at extremely affordable prices, most in the $15 to $40 range.

As many current OLLI members will tell you, the program has value far beyond a two-hour classroom setting.

“It’s opened up new worlds for me,” says Corinne Allen, a longtime OLLI member.

Allen further notes that her involvement in many of the art classes offered through the program has been a great avenue for her to keep her mind stimulated, as well as allowing her to stay connected with other likeminded people.

This sense of finding community in the OLLI program is a common theme.

“I can come by myself and there are people who will remember me from the last time,” Leilani Filhard says, adding that her participation in OLLI has given her an entirely new circle of friends she might not have met otherwise.

Betty and Bob Carr have found a more enduring impact on their lives because of their involvement with the program. By making strides to keep learning throughout their lives, the Carrs firmly believe “…our children have grown up knowing education is important.” Of course, instances such as this not only vouch for OLLI’s immediate effect on its members but also its effect on future generations.

Another nice feature of Tech’s OLLI is its mobility.

Field trips and tours are a big part of many classes. The Spring 2011 curriculum included tours of the Lubbockbased graphic arts firm Stephen Joseph Inc., the Texas Tech Department of Animal and Food Sciences Building, a couple of local wineries and the Museum of Texas Tech University.

“I learn all sorts of new things that are happening at Texas Tech and in Lubbock,” says Angela Boren, an OLLI charter member.

That mobility goes beyond Lubbock’s city limits. Members have the chance to hit the road, so to speak, via short, out-of-town field trips with other classmates.

As Pat Harris recalls, “We also have gone on some great excursions to other parts of the state, such as a weekend in Fredericksburg touring wineries and enjoying the scenery.”

For those like Harris who enjoy trips to exciting locations, OLLI’s merger with the Alumni Association will literally open up new worlds of travel opportunities for OLLI members, who now will have access to the Alumni Association’s Vacation Travel program, which offers special values for members on international packages to exotic locations in the Caribbean, the Baltics, Napa Valley, the Far East, and many other places of interest.

The merger’s mutual benefit to both organizations reaches far beyond one travel program, though. The organization’s new home in the Merket Alumni Center will offer a host of new features that weren’t readily available in previous years. Douglass, who is also a member of the OLLI Advisory Board, points out improvements and conveniences OLLI members likely will enjoy.

The Merket is “easier to find, more accessible, has more parking, and has better facilities with more classroom space.” Douglass noted.

The additional classroom space is something Carrasco is particularly excited about.

“With more classrooms, there will be less need to conduct classes offsite,” she says.

OLLI orientation

This change will cut down on the overall complexity of organizing classes and events off campus and not be an added inconvenience for instructors. Patrons will have an easier time in scheduling their classes to fit their schedules.

Aside from the enhancements of its new physical home, Bill Dean, executive vice president and CEO of the Texas Tech Alumni Association, wants to ensure OLLI enjoys plenty of added intangible benefits to its program as well. Dean says the Alumni Association’s staff will be available to help improve OLLI’s mailing and technical support for its day-to-day operations, but, more importantly, he acknowledged that the alumni association’s marketing department can help OLLI better promote itself.

Dean also understands, just as much as Carrasco and Cummins do, that added interest in OLLI will better serve everyone involved in this merger. Both organizations see the merger as an opportunity to cross promote and introduce a larger group of people to the values and benefits of both organizations.

And if this merger proves to be as successful as everyone expects it to be, people will look back in a few years and ask, “what took us so long?”

When it came time for art-lover Gayla Jett Shannon to decide on a major for college, she chose interior design. When it came time to choose a university, she chose Texas Tech.

“I looked at other schools with interior design programs, but Texas Tech was different because I was able to earn a BFA (bachelor’s of fine art),” says Jett Shannon, an awardwinning interior designer with a ready smile and supersunny disposition. “I wanted something related to art. I thought about professions in art and music, and decided interior design would be best. I liked the creative aspect of the business. It allowed me to still be involved in an artistic endeavor and make money.”

Jett Shannon was born and raised in Fort Worth. A flute and piccolo player, she attended band camp at Texas Tech during high school and then went on to join the Goin’ Band from Raiderland. (She can still play the flute!) She received a music scholarship from Tech, but changed her major to art, at which point she was awarded a Goin’ Band scholarship.

She graduated from Tech magna cum laude in 1982, but didn’t end her education there. She went on to work for several well-known designers and design firms. In 1984, she received six hours of graduate credit from the Parson’s School of Design in Italy.

Three years later, in 1987, she received six more hours of graduate credit when she enrolled in a joint program at the University of North Texas/American College of Switzerland—she traveled to France, Switzerland, Italy and England and studied advanced watercolor painting and drawing as well as architecture. And in 2009 she earned a master’s in architecture from University of Texas-Arlington.

In 1986 she accepted an offer to teach at the university level and became an adjunct faculty member at UNT. From 1987 until 1993, she was a full-time faculty member serving as an assistant professor of art and interior design.

During that time she continued to practice interior design on a freelance basis.

“It’s amazing how much of a better designer I am because of teaching,” comments Jett Shannon.

While she enjoyed teaching, the years of experience in the design world sparked in her an entrepreneurial spirit.

In 1997, after having worked as a project designer and consultant for Gale Van Ackeren & Assoc. in Fort Worth and Marguerite Green & Assoc. in Dallas, as well as with James McInroe Antiques in Fort Worth, she made the decision to start her own business, Inside Inc. She never completely gave up a role in academia—still today, when Jett Shannon isn’t designing, she’s teaching.

She is an assistant professor of professional practice at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, where interior design majors are fortunate to have a professor with loads of experience and a passion that matches.

But back to business…Inside Inc. was born in 1997, about a year after her son, Alec, who’s now 15. Being her own boss allowed her freedom and flexibility in her work and personal life. Jett Shannon has managed to create an ideal situation where she can seamlessly move from work to home and vice versa. She and her husband constructed

Jett Shannon and Shannon have known one another since junior high in Fort Worth.

Shannon’s mother and two siblings attended Tech, and he followed in their footsteps. He was a member of the Goin’ Band with Jett Shannon, and played the french horn.

Although Shannon received his degree in finance, exposure to Jett Shannon’s career, and a personal interest in architecture, ultimately altered his profession.

“While living in Murdough (dormitory), I became good friends with a number of architecture majors and always enjoyed discussing their projects,” Shannon says. “This was probably the real genesis of my interest in architecture. Once Gayla and I started dating, she exposed me to a great deal more in the fields of architecture and design.

After graduating from Tech with a B.A. in finance, I went into the family funeral business here in Fort Worth. Eventually we came to the decision to sell our business…”

Shannon spent seven years working for a corporation in Fort Worth, then left to pursue his master’s in architecture at University of Texas-Arlington. He received his degree in 2005 and now he and Jett Shannon collaborate on projects.

“Gayla is a talented, diligent professional who is dedicated to providing our clients with the best possible design regardless of the circumstances,” says Shannon.

Shortly after opening Inside Inc., Jett Shannon convinced McCans to join her in Inside Inc. McCans explains how she chose to attend Texas Tech, and what led her to Inside Inc. “I had originally been accepted at UT Austin, but when my teachers and counselor found out, they persuaded me to look at Texas Tech,” says McCans, who grew up in Texas City, Texas. “From a young age I always knew I wanted to pursue a degree in interior design, and they felt I would receive more personal attention and get a better degree from Tech.”

Jett Shannon and McCans were working for The Design Studio of Gabberts in Fort Worth when Jett Shannon started Inside Inc. She invited McCans to join her, and a year later, in 1998, she did. The two women had worked together on projects while with Gabberts and knew they were highly compatible. september/october 2011 T E C H S A N «

“We realized after the Showhouse (project) in 1995 that we were very compatible in our design philosophies and made a good team,” says McCans. “She decided to start her own company in 1997 and asked if I would be willing to follow.”

McCans says that a degree from Tech prepared her well, from the required design labs that began while she was a freshman, as well as history of furniture, architecture classes, art, art history and many other designrelated courses.

“We had CAD (computer aided design) when it first came out,” she says. “Also, they hired Sue Wade (she owned her own business at the time but previously was the CEO of Wilson Assoc.) to fly out every other week and teach a professional practices class that I felt was very helpful. I got so much out of it I took it twice.”

Both Jett Shannon and McCans say they are blessed because of their great working relationship; neither can imagine working without the other.

“People are always asking me why I don’t start my own company and I always tell them the same thing: I can’t imagine not working with Gayla,” says McCans, who balances five children and her career at Inside Inc. “She is brilliant and I’m always learning from her; not only in design, but in life lessons as well. I trust her with my life. Our strengths and weaknesses balance each other so beautifully; we are each other’s yin and yang when designing a project.

“I know the reason I’ve been so successful is because of the flexibility I’ve been given at the office. I feel as if I have two families; my home and the office.”

Before designing a space, clients are required to fill out, for Inside Inc.'s designers, a detailed questionnaire that provides direction and clearly points to clients' preferences. The results help ensure their customers are pleased with their newly designed spaces. In order to stay up-to-date on design trends, Jett Shannon attends numerous conventions and subscribes to a variety of design publications. She has been a member of the Texas Tech University Interior design Advisory Board since 2001, and was chairwoman from 2006-2009.

While the designers and architects at Inside Inc. find great satisfaction in their work, they also enjoy knowing their clients enjoy their new surroundings.

“The people we work with are typically very hard working individuals who appreciate fine design,” adds McCans. “We love to see the end result and how happy we’ve made someone’s life…we give others a place of serenity and joy and excitement.”

For Jett Shannon, interior design is the merging of art and function. She wants any space she designs to be functional, not just visually appealing. Of paramount importance, she says, is that her clients be able to really use their living spaces. Ultimately, for Jett Shannon, the art of fine design is about creating a tranquil retreat.

Brig. Gen. Charles Q. Brown, Jr. Brig. Gen. Charles Q. Brown, Jr., is the deputy director, operations, U.S. Central Command, MacDill Air Force Base, Fla. He has served in the United States Air Force for 26 years in 20 different assignments having been stationed in Arizona; Florida; Korea; Nevada; Washington, D.C.; Alabama; South Carolina and Italy.

Brown started his Air Force career after graduating in 1984 from Texas Tech University as a distinguished graduate of Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. He graduated from USAF Fighter Weapons School, Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., in 1991, and from Squadron Officer School, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., in 1992. He earned his Master of Aeronautical Science degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Daytona Beach, Fla., in 1994. Brown was a 1997 Distinguished Graduate, Air Command and Staff College, and in 2000, he graduated from Air War College, both at Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala. In 2004, he was a National Defense Fellow at the Institute for Defense Analyses, Alexandria, Va. He has held various squadron and wing level positions during operational assignments to include instructing in the F-16 Division, U.S. Air Force Weapons School. His staff tours include Aide-de-Camp to the Chief of Staff of the Air Force, Air Operations Officer, U.S. Central Command; Deputy Chief, Program Integration Division, Directorate of Programs; and later Director, Secretary of the Air Force and Chief of Staff Executive Action Group, Headquarters, U.S. Air Force. Brown has served as a fighter squadron commander, Commandant of the United States Air Force Weapons School, and twice as wing commander most recently as the Commander, 31st Fighter Wing, Aviano Air Base, Italy.

General Brown is a command pilot with more than 2,850 flying hours, including 85 combat hours supporting no-fly zones over Iraq and Libya. He has primarily flown the F-16A/B/C/D and has also flown the AC-130U, AH-64, AT-38, B-1B, B-2A, B-52H, HH-60G, T-37 and T-38.

Larry R. Byrd A native of Brownsville, Texas, Larry R. Byrd is president and partner of All-Plastics Molding, Inc., an Addison, Texas-based company that produces custom plastic molded parts for a variety of industrial customers. Among the company’s clients are Texas Instruments, Mary Kay Cosmetics and Kimberly Clark.

Byrd’s family moved from Brownsville to Lubbock, where he graduated from Lubbock High School. He served as president of the student body his senior year.

The talented leader continued his education at Texas Tech, where he studied industrial engineering and was a member of the American Institute of Industrial Engineers.

Because of his academic abilities, he was on the Engineering Dean’s List. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1957.

While in college, he served as president of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. In addition, he was the Engineering Representative to the Tech Supreme Court. He served as president of the Junior Class. Byrd was Distinguished AFROTC Cadet in 1957 and then Distinguished Military Graduate. He was a Cadet Colonel in the Tech AFROTC. After graduating from Texas Tech, Byrd entered the United States Air Force as a 2nd lieutenant aircraft maintenance officer for the 343rd Fighter-Group ADC. He attained the rank of captain.

Byrd completed his military training and began working in engineering design for EIM Controls, Inc., in Houston. After a year, he joined Exxon/Mobil Corp. USA and began a 15-year career with engineering and managerial assignments that required him to relocate eight times.

He has been with All-Plastics Molding, Inc., since 1974. He is a Registered Texas Professional Engineer.

In addition to his busy engineering career, Byrd is involved in other activities.

He has been a director and executive committee member of North Dallas Bank and Trust Co. since 1978. He has served as president and a board member of the Addison Business Association.

He received the Texas Industrial Engineering Lifetime Achievement Award from The Institute of Industrial Engineers in August 2010.

Byrd’s connection to Texas Tech did not end when he graduated. He was a charter member of the Texas Tech University Engineering Dean’s Council (1995) and continues to serve on it. He was president of the Texas Tech Alumni Association in 1982. He was named a Distinguished Engineer of Texas Tech that same year. He also was the graduation speaker for the “Order of the Engineer-Iron Ring Ceremony” at Texas Tech.

Faith is a driving force in his life. He has served as Texas Area Adviser for Men’s Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) for 25 years, during which time he started and supervised 29 men’s BSF classes in Texas and Oklahoma. Byrd is active with Park Cities Baptist Church, where he is a teacher, chairman of deacons and president of the trustees. He was chairman during a $33 million construction project. In 2005, he received the Rotary Club of Park Cities 2005 Ethics Award.

Byrd has been married for 53 years to Patricia Ann, and they have two married daughters, Deborah Lynn Price and Julie Ann Brigman, and four grandchildren.

Michael L. Gilbert, Ph.D. Michael L. Gilbert, Ph.D., is vice president of Bayer CropScience, president of Bayer Cotton Seed International and global head of plant breeding and trait development.

Gilbert earned a bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics in 1980 from Texas Tech University. He graduated with a master’s degree in agriculture in 1986 from West Texas A&M University. He earned a doctorate in agronomy in 1989 from Texas Tech.

After college, Gilbert worked as a plant breeder and global breeding manager for Cargill, Inc., from 1981 to 1989. The crops he managed included sorghum in the United States, Colombia, Venezuela, Argentina, Brazil, India and Australia; canola in Canada, Germany and France; sunflowers in the U.S., France, South Africa and Argentina; and hybrid rice in the Philippines and India.

Since 1989, he has worked for Bayer CropScience. As president and general manager of Bayer Cotton Seed International, he develops and manages cotton business, including sales, marketing, supply chain and research and development. The company has launched two brands of cotton seed globally, FiberMax, the No. 1 brand of cotton seed in the U.S. , and SurPass, hybrid cotton in India. They have led the acquisition of two additional brands, Stoneville and AFD. Bayer’s cotton business globally has grown to No. 1 in brand acres in the world. The company has developed business activity in the U.S., Mexico, Brazil, Peru, Argentina, Colombia, India, Australia, Greece, Spain, Turkey and South Africa. They also have established full supply chain for high quality fiber from Texas: Certified FiberMax. Established Certified FiberMax Merchants and spinners and have recently moved into retail. Currently, Gilbert leads a group of more than 500 scientists globally working with various crops.

His professional affiliations include serving as past president and board member of the Sorghum Improvement Conference of North America and past board member of the Texas Seed Trade Association.

He is a member of the American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America and American Seed Trade Association. Gilbert is crop science representative and member of the editorial board of Plant Breeding Reviews. He is a past member of Ag Advisory Committee at West Texas A&M. He has served on the USDA Crop Germplasm Committee, Washington, D.C. Gilbert remains loyal to and involved with his alma mater. He has, through Cargill and Bayer, supported numerous graduate students including providing scholarships and research agreements and employing them upon graduation. He has served on the Plant and Soil Science Department Advisory Board, the Dean’s Advisory Council of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. He has assisted in the formation of the Chemistry/Biochemistry Advisory Board and chaired this team during the initial year of launch. Gilbert is a guest lecturer in the College of Agricultural and Natural Sciences and has served as a graduate committee adviser in CASNR. CASNR named him a 2004 Distinguished Alumnus. He was named a Texas Tech Outstanding Agriculturalist in 2005.

Recently, the Texas Legislature authorized the Texas Research Incentive Program (TRIP) to establish public/private partnerships. Gilbert initiated, “Project Revolution,” which is a comprehensive research collaboration between Texas Tech and Bayer designed to develop bio-engineered cotton fibers with unique characteristics for the textile market.

Gilbert developed research direction, sought and gained approval of the Bayer CropScience board for a Bayer donation of $7.5 million dollars toward the TRIP program. This amount was matched by the State of Texas for a total award of $15 million. Of the award, $10 million is dedicated to Project Revolution, and $5 million is dedicated toward a new Plant Science Building.

Gilbert and his wife, Donna, have two children, Jennifer and Jeremy, and three grandchildren.

Kirk Lewis, Ed.D. Kirk Lewis’s experience in education and communications has prepared him well for his position as chief executive officer of the Pasadena Independent School District, Pasadena, Texas. The school district has 52,500 students on 62 campuses.

His career began in 1976, the year he graduated from Texas Tech University with a bachelor’s degree in advertising/public relations. He served as assistant director of public information for one year. For the next four years, Lewis was director of public information for Houston Baptist University. During this time, he earned a master’s degree in educational futures from the University of Houston, Clear Lake campus.

In 1981, Lewis took a position as director of advertising/communication for Kwik-Kopy Corp. He was responsible for media relations, international/national marketing, corporate communications and magazine publishing. He held the position for five years.

Lewis began working for the Pasadena Independent School District in 1986, as an administrative assistant to the superintendent. Over the next 20 years, he held the positions of executive director of communications/community relations; deputy superintendent for administration, public relations and governmental affairs and acting superintendent.

Lewis became chief executive officer of the school district in April 2006. He earned his doctorate in educational leadership from Lamar University in Beaumont in May 2008.

He belongs to numerous professional organizations, including Texas School Public Relations Association, National School Public Relations Association, Texas Association of School Administrators, American Association of School Administrators and Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.

In addition to his busy career, Lewis is involved in outside organizations. He is a member of South Main Baptist Church in Pasadena, where he serves as a deacon. His memberships in the community include Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership, Pasadena Chamber of Commerce, South Houston Chamber of Commerce, South Belt Chamber of Commerce, Community in Schools Advisory Board, Pasadena Rotary Club, Pasadena ISD Education Foundation and University of Houston-Clear Lake Community Partners Council.

Lewis has numerous publications and presentations. He has served as contributing editor to Good News America, a publication of Kwik-Kopy Corp. He has had articles published in Texas Lone Star, a publication of the TASB; School Board News, a publication of the National School Board Association; and Resources, a publication of the South East Economic Development Corp. He has been a columnist for the Pasadena Citizen and is the author of “A Century of Learning: A History of the Pasadena Independent School District, 1898-1998.”

Presentations include those made to the Region XI Service Center, Dallas; University of Houston and University of St. Thomas, Houston; School Public Information Network; Texas School Public Relations Association; Jostens Learning Center Conference; National Congress of Parents and Teachers and TASA/ TASB Annual Conference.

For his accomplishments, Lewis has received two Kwik-Kopy Pride Awards, two Silver Star Awards from the Texas School Public Relations Association, Honorary Life Membership in the Texas PTA, Golden Apple Award from Pasadena ISD, Honorary Life membership in the National Congress of Parents and Teachers and the Platinum Award for Texas Outstanding School Marketing Program.

Other honors he has received are the National Model of Excellence School District in 2008, the HEB District of Excellence Finalist in 2009 and 2010, the Houston Top 100 Workplace in 2010 and the Houston Chronicle Silver Leadership Circle Award in 2010. This year, he has received the Texas Comptroller’s Office Gold Leadership Circle Award and the Texas Comptroller’s Office Texas Recognized District for 2010-2011.

He and his wife of 35 years, Robin, have two sons, Adam and Andrew. Adam and his wife, Jordan, have a son, Eli. Andrew is a 2004 graduate of Texas Tech with a degree in electrical engineering. september/october 2011 T E C H S A N «

2011 Red Raider Football Preview

For Tech, it will be especially trying. For the Red Raiders’ opening game against Texas State, the Bobcats are reviving their program under Dennis Franchione, returning to football for the first time since being ousted at Texas A&M following the 2007 season. Tech then gets its only bye week in Week 2 before playing 11 consecutive games, including two other nonconference games.

The toughest portion of the schedule comes in November. The Red Raiders have a three-game stretch starting at Texas (Nov. 5), then Oklahoma State (Nov. 12) and finishing at Missouri (Nov. 19). Tech has not won in Austin since 1999 and has never won in Columbia.

The Cowboys beat Tech at home for the first time last season, 34-17.

OFFENSE Chad Glasgow

T exas T ech enters year two under head Coach Tuberville with many questions and plenty of possibilities.

Will redshirt junior quarterback Seth Doege be the new gunslinger under center for offensive coordinator Neal Brown? Is Eric Stephens ready to be the primary running back? Will new defensive coordinator Chad Glasgow have the answers for reviving the Red Raiders defense? Who will step up from the nationally ranked No. 12 recruiting class?

Those pieces, among others, could help the success of the 2011 season for Tech.

The biggest challenge may be how each of the remaining 10 teams reacts to the new Big 12 Conference nine-game gaunt-

Although the focus may be on having a healthy Austin Zouzalik or Alex Torres, everyone will have eyes on first-year starting quarterback Doege.

He, of course, replaces Taylor Potts, who started 12 of 13 games last season, playing the majority along with Steven Sheffield. The two battled two seasons to be a starter at Texas Tech.

It was Potts who remained the main quarterback last season, leading the Red Raiders to the TicketCity Bowl title over Northwestern–winning his second game in Cotton Bowl Stadium.

Now Doege looks to be the starting quarterback. The prized high school star from Crane, Texas, transferred to Frenship High School following his sophomore season but never played a down for the Tigers, injuring his right and left knees– each requiring surgery and rehabilitation.

Former coach Mike Leach kept his word

and gave Doege a scholarship to Tech in 2007. Doege sat out in 2008 as a redshirt and then actually started a game in 2009 against Kansas but was relieved by Potts.

Running back Eric Stephens takes the primary spot previously held by Baron Batch, who was drafted in the seventh round by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2011 NFL Draft.

Stephens struggled with ball control in 2010 but hopes to build on what appeared to be a promising showing in the TicketCity Bowl. He ran the ball 14 times for 126 yards, including his 86-yard touchdown to put Tech ahead 31-9 in the third quarter.

One of the best overall team players, Stephens hopes for a breakout season as running back, similar to his explosion on the scene as primary kick return specialist for the Red Raiders the last two seasons.

His downfield vision has improved, and he is a solid security valve in passing game.

Stephens caught 33 passes for 212 yards and two touchdowns last season while rushing for another 683 and six scores.

Doege will have a seasoned group backed by wide receivers Zouzalik, Torres and Tramain Swindall. He should also get a solid boost with Jacoby Franks, Eric Ward and newcomer Marcus Kennard, along with second-year receiver Darrin Moore.

While Moore will likely challenge Ward for one of the outside two starting positions in the four-wide receiver set, Kennard is a perfect fit for the outside with speed and size–6-foot-4, 210 pounds and runs a 4.5, 40-yard dash.

The Butler County College transfer made amazing grabs throughout spring practices, demonstrating speed, and the ability to leap and grab jump balls down the sidelines or in the popular fade route in the corner of the end zone. Kennard fin-

ished with two catches for 32 yards and a touchdown in the annual spring game.

Tuberville says he’s never had to play a season without a true tight end until last year. He will embrace San Antonio MacArthur’s Jace Amaro, one of the first players to commit in 2011. He was the fifth-ranked tight end recruit last season, according to Scout.com.

Expect Amaro to play once the offense gets more comfortable with a tight end, adding another dynamic piece to the running and passing game.

DEFENSE

Texas Tech will install another defensive scheme for the second consecutive season after saying goodbye to James Willis before the TicketCity Bowl and bringing in new defensive coordinator Chad Glasgow from TCU. Glasgow spent 11 years under TCU head coach Gary Patterson as a defensive position coach and was with Patterson at New Mexico before the move to Fort Worth. He brings along with him the newest craze among college coaches–the 4-2-5 defensive scheme.

The basic concept of the defense is simple--stop the run and pressure the quarterback.

Cody Davis and D.J. Johnson will hold down the traditional safety spots away from the line of scrimmage in Glasgow’s 4-2-5. It appears secondary can only improve with Davis, the team’s leading returning tackler, with 87 stops, and Brett Dewhurst and Giorgio Durham should back in the rotation.

Davis will be asked to be a leader. He is one of the most talented and experienced players on the Red Raider defense. He and Sam Fehoko should step up as leaders with Johnson after the departure of seniors Bront Bird, Colby Whitlock, Brian

Duncan and LaRon Moore. Others who emerge as defensive leaders will be somewhat of a mystery. While sophomores Derrick Mays, Dartwan Bush, Cqulin Hubert and Tre Porter need to step up play, expect senior Donald Langley to be a presence as a defensive line leader. The expectations will be much bigger after last season. Tech was ranked near the bottom of FBS schools in both total defense (114th, 456.31 yards allowed per game) and pass defense (118th, 293.7 yards allowed per game).

Two hot recruits make their bids to play this season on the Red Raiders defense. Reynolds could see the most play-

ing time this season in the secondary, backing up Tre Porter or Derrick Mays at the outside positions. He possesses great speed (4.4, 40-yard dash) and athletic ability to compete at the collegiate level early, while Simmons, the highest high school signee in Tech history, must work his way into the starting four spots or even a backup position along the line.

Also expect Leon Mackey to make a big impact as a primary rusher off the end.

Tech is not short of talent up front with Kerry Hyder, Donald Langley, Pearlie Graves and Lawrence Rumph, returning and others, such as Chris Perry, showed improvements during spring practices.

Raquel Cruz Bono (MD Medicine) Alexandria V.A., an active-duty officer in the Navy, became chief of staff of the TRICARE Management Activity in September after three years as commanding officer of Naval Hospital Jacksonville, Fla. In 2010 she was named the deputy director of medical resources, plans and policy for the chief of Naval Operations. In April, Bono was nominated for promotion to rear admiral. Her husband is Arthur Dwight.

Army Major Anthony Killa (BBA '95 Marketing), Atlanta, Ga., and Air Force First Lieutenant JoJo Shamy (BS '07 Biology), members of Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) Kapisa, send greetings from Forward Operating Base Morales-Frazier in Kapisa Province, Afghanistan. Major Killa served dually as the PRT executive officer and operations officer, while Lieutenant Shamy served as the PRT intelligence officer.

Both completed their Afghanistan deployment in July 2011.

Wendell Dorsett (BS Agricultural Engineering) Fremont, Neb., retired from Valmont Industries Inc., and received the Individual Achievement Award in Agriculture from the Irrigation Association in December 2010 after spending a career designing and applying agricultural equipment globally.

Ken Fergeson (BBA Management, MS Agricultural Economics) Altus, Okla., has recently been named chairman of the Americans for the Arts, the leading nonprofit organization for advancing the arts in America, headquartered in Washington, D.C., and New York City. Fergeson is also chairman of NBC Oklahoma. He has owned banks in Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Altus, Enid and Kingfisher. In 2009, he was inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame and has been honored by the Oklahoma Education Assoc. for outstanding service for public education. His wife is Mary Ann.

T. John Ward , (BA Chemistry), Longview, Texas, U.S. Federal Judge, was honored for his service at the Federal Courthouse in Marshall, Texas, June 3.

Many dignitaries including 23 Federal Judges attended the ceremonies. During the event a portrait of Ward by artist Jason Bouldin was unveiled. His wife is Elizabeth C. Ward (’86 BGS General Studies).

He received the award for his work to create innovative systems and procedures in Lubbock and across Texas that serve as models of efficient and effective indigent defense. Stephanie Eckroth , a doctoral candidate in 19th Century Literature and Book History in the Department of English, has been named a 2011-12 Chawton House Library Visiting Fellow. Eckroth will present a paper on her research to the Chawton House community of scholars and those from the University of Southampton, England. The Chawton House Library (Southampton, England), an English manor house associated with Jane Austen, is home to the Centre for the Study of Early English Women’s Writing, 1600-1830.

Chapter of the Society of Physics Students (SPS) was named as an Outstanding SPS Chapter for the 2009-2010 academic year by the American Institute of Physics (AIP). Texas Tech’s SPS is one of 50 schools recognized with an Outstanding SPS Chapter award from the about 700 chapters across the United States. Fewer than 10 percent of SPS chapters nationwide receive this recognition. The chapter also received the 2011 Marsh W. White Outreach Award from the AIP to help fund an outreach project titled “Physics Flying Circus.” The Marsh W. White Awards are made to the SPS chapters to support projects designed to promote interest in physics among students and the general public.

Gov. R ick Perry has announced the appointment of Jill Fadal as the Texas Tech University System student regent. She is a dual degree student in the joint MD/MBA program between Texas Tech University and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. Her oneyear term began June 1.

Fadal, a native of Austin, received her bachelor’s degree in general studies from Texas Tech University in 2009 where she was heavily involved in many student organizations and activities on campus, including Phi Beta Kappa and President’s Select.

She is currently the president-elect of the Orthopedics Club and serves as vice president of the Texas Tech MD/MBA Association.

Nicole Gross , a doctoral student in the Department of Psychology, is the principal investigator on a grant awarded from the Center for Behavioral Health Services & Criminal Justice Research, an NIMH supported research institute.

Nicole’s grant will support her dissertation on “Criminal thinking in a community mental health sample: Effects of treatment engagement and psychiatric recovery.” The award is for a total of $123,424.

Melissa Iñigo , a graduate student in the Department of Health, Exercise and Sport Sciences, has been selected to receive a 2011 Graduate Scholar Award by the American Kinesiology Association (AKA). This annual award recognizes at the national level, the academic and leadership accomplishments of graduate students in AKA member departments. She will receive a certificate from the AKA and her biography with photo will be posted in a directory to be maintained on the AKA website.

Landon Houle , a graduate student in creative writing in the Department of English, was named the winner of Permafrost’s 2011 Midnight Sun Fiction Contest for the short story “This World Made Magic,” which is slated for publication in the fall. Another story, “Good Times for Sure,” is in the current issue of the online journal The Dirty Napkin. Her story “Big Hand Fred and His Kodak Ektralite” was named a finalist in the 2011 Texas Observer Short Story Prize judged by Larry McMurtry. And another story, “On the Wings of the Great Speckled Bird,” was named honorable mention in this same contest.

T he A ssociation of Information Technology Professionals (AITP) has been honored with the 2010-2011 Texas Tech University Academic “Student Organization of the Year,” one of the most prestigious awards given to a student-run organization. In addition, they also were awarded the “Most Improved Academic Student Organization of the Year” for the 2010-2011 school year.

Attributing to AITP’s selection was a plethora of well-rounded organizational activities that helped improve the professional and personal development of students. The group’s activities also provided valuable community service to the university and local community.
