University Leadership friends is not easy.

The passing of Nelda Laney has left a huge void in many places. She touched so many lives in so many different ways. More about her is in this issue.

Nelda was a former president of the Texas Tech Alumni Association and led the fund-raising drive to double the size of the then-named Merket Alumni Center.

It is remarkable not one pledge to that expansion project was delinquent when all was said and done. That sort of success record just doesn’t happen in most fund drives, but most fund drives do not have a Nelda Laney either. She not only obtained pledges to exceed our cost, but she stayed on top of them until the pledges were all fulfilled.

Nelda also was responsible for the Texas Tech Class Ring sculpture on the southeast corner of our building. Aside from “Riding into the Sunset,” commonly known as “Will Rogers and Soapsuds,” it is probably the most photographed icon on campus.

I could talk for a long time about Nelda, but one event stands out in my mind. Several years ago, at Texas Tech Day in Austin, Nelda took me on a tour of the Capitol. As you may know, she served as co-chair of the Capitol Fund Drive, raising private funds for furnishing the renovated Texas Capitol, and as vice chair of the Texas Capitol Restoration Celebration.

She received Special Recognition for her work on the Capitol Restoration by the Texas Women’s Alliance and received the Star of Texas Preservation Award for Capitol Restoration.

She created a series of collectible Texas Capitol holiday ornaments to fund continued preservation and educational programming. Between 1996 and 2002, Nelda handled all phases of the project and sold more than 300,000 ornaments, generating more than $2 million for the Texas Capitol.

She took me through the Capitol, pointing out various features. Everywhere we went, people recognized her and came up to say hello. I am not just talking about elected officials or administrative aides. I mean everyone— custodians, cooks, guards, etc. They all knew her, and they all liked her.

That is the type of person Nelda Laney was, and she will be greatly missed.

God rest her soul.

I M ET S A M Curl, Ph.D., when I joined the 413th Civil Affairs U.S. Army Reserve unit in Lubbock in 1962.

In the 1960s, young people had three choices. Wait and be drafted for two years and generally wind up in the infantry. Join for three years and select the field in which you could be trained. Join for six years, spending the first six months in active duty training. I chose the last choice, which was why I joined a reserve unit.

(I am not so sure that it wouldn’t be a bad idea for every young person today to spend two months in basic training. It teaches you a great deal of discipline and also an appreciation for what it takes to live in a free society.)

Sam Curl was a first lieutenant in my unit. He was bright, energetic and had a promising future in education. He finished his service in the U.S. Army with the rank of captain.

He received Distinguished Alumni Awards from the University of Missouri (master’s degree in animal genetics in 1961) and Sam Houston State University (bachelor’s degree in 1959)

I was shocked to learn that he passed away Aug. 2.

Sam served 31 years at Texas Tech, including three years as associate vice president for academic affairs. He was dean of the now-named College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources from 1979 to 1997. It was during his tenure the name of the college was changed to that title.

He left Tech to become dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources at Oklahoma State. When he retired, he consulted professionally in the field of agriculture.

His heart was with the Red and Black. He and his wife, Mary, came back to campus frequently.

Mary was a 1965 graduate of the College of Human Sciences. She taught in the college and also served in the Office of Campus Life. They were both big supporters of Tech athletic teams.

God rest his soul as well new president of Texas Tech University, Lawrence Schovanec, Ph.D. He is the 14th Texas Tech president, including interims, under whom I have served.

The general feeling I get on campus is of great excitement and anticipation. Schovanec was a popular choice. You will find more about him in this issue.

He was chair of the Department of Mathematics & Statistics for 10 years and then appointed interim dean of the College of Arts & Sciences. He became dean in 2010.

When Guy Bailey, Ph.D., resigned from the Texas Tech University presidency to become president at the University of Alabama, Schovanec was named interim president Aug. 10, 2012, and served in that role until M. Duane Nellis, Ph.D., was named president in 2013.

I think most observers felt Schovanec picked up the reins from Bailey and the university moved forward without any delays or interruptions.

Schovanec certainly has the academic credentials and administrative experience required to be president¬plus, he clearly loves Texas Tech.

John Opperman, Ph.D., served as interim until Schovanec was named.

Opperman has served as vice chancellor for academic affairs for the Texas Tech system since June.

Prior to that position, he was vice chancellor for policy and planning since 2002. From 1996 to 1999, he was vice chancellor of administration and finance and chief financial officer for the system.

In those roles, he served under all four Texas Tech chancellors to date–John T. Montford; David Smith, M.D.; Kent R. Hance and Robert L. Duncan.

Again, the university did not miss a beat under Opperman.

He needs to be thanked for his service.

FORM ER C H A NC EL L OR J OH N T. Montford has written a book, “Board Games: Straight Talk For New Directors and Good Governance,” designed to cover responsibilities of a person who seeks to become and serves as a member of a corporate board.

He begins with a discussion of how to get appointed to a board, with the bottom line being that the individual has to earn the position. He covers putting shareholders first pointing out it is the board members’ responsibility to protect shareholders.

There is much discussion about finances and the importance of an audit committee.

I found the chapters about hiring a CEO and compensation especially interesting. Although the board of the Texas Tech Alumni Association sets policies for a non-profit organization, there is much in the book that would be of value to for-profit boards as well. It would especially be valuable if you serve on a corporate board.

There is a Red and Black flavor to the book, as John shares some of his experience while chancellor, including his nowfamous reinstatement of the running of the Masked Rider at football games.

The book is co-authored by Joseph Daniel McCool, globally recognized expert on executive search, board director recruitment and corporate talent strategy. The foreword is by Herb Kelleher, co-founder, chairman emeritus, and former CEO of Southwest Airlines.

TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY’S COLLEGE OF ARTS & SCIENCES HONORED FOUR DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI THIS YEAR. The Distinguished Alumni Award honors alumni who have made significant contributions to society and whose accomplishments and careers have honored the legacy of excellence and tradition at the University.

Honorees were: PHIL JOHNSON, Lubbock, received a bachelor’s in mathematics in 1965 and his law degree from Texas Tech School of Law in 1975, has served on the Texas Supreme Court since his 2005 appointment by Gov. Rick Perry (R), prior to his position on the supreme court, he was serving as Chief Justice of the Seventh Court of Appeals in Amarillo, having first been elected to the Court of Appeals in 1998 as Chief Justice in 2002—before his election to the Court of Appeals, Johnson practiced law with the Lubbock law firm of Crenshaw, Dupree & Milam, L.L.P.; TIBOR P. NAGY, JR., Lubbock, was born in Budapest, Hungary, entered in the United States as a political refugee while still a child, later received a bachelor’s in political science from Texas Tech in 1972, and serves as Vice Provost for International Affairs at Texas Tech University—Nagy has more than 20 years of experience in African relations, including serving as a U.S. Ambassador to Guinea and Ethiopia; GINGER KERRICK, Houston, Texas, received her bachelor’s and master’s in physics in 1991 and 1993, she has served in a number of different roles at NASA: Materials Research Engineer, International Space Station Environmental Control and Life Support Systems Instructor, Russian Training Integration Instructor, Capsule Communicator, Flight Director, and is now assistant director for the International Space Station in the Flight Operations Directorate; LAURO F. CAVAZOS, Ph.D., Concord, Massachusetts, served as president of Texas Tech University from 1980-1988 and subsequently served under President Ronald Reagan as the fourth U.S. Secretary of Education from 1988-1990, received a bachelor’s and master’s in zoology in 1949 and 1951, and is currently a faculty member at Tufts University.

HONG-CHAO-ZHANG, PH.D., ENDOWMENT CHAIR PROFESSOR AND INTERIM DEPARTMENT CHAIR OF THE DEPARTMENT OF INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING IN THE WHITACRE COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING HAS BEEN HONORED BY SME (SOCIETY OF MANUFACTURING ENGINEERS) BY BEING ELECTED TO SME’S 2016 COLLEGE OF FELLOWS. Zhang has published more than 200 referred journal papers and 136 referred conference papers. He has served as an associate editor for several journals and was the pioneer and first person to propose and organize the first ASME symposium on Environmental Conscious Manufacturing in 1995. He is now a Distinguished Professor of Nations 1000 recruitment plan, and has served as the chief scientist of 973 research programs for the Ministry of Science and Technology is China. He has been a member of SME since 1985.

DAVID SNOW, PH.D., HAS BEEN NAMED AS TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY’S OFFICE OF RESEARCH COMMERCIALIZATION’S DIRECTOR. Snow held the position of interim director for the past year. Snow is a licensed patent agent and will serve as managing director of intellectual property for the Texas Tech University System.

In this role he will be responsible for the assessment, protection and management of the intellectual property portfolio.

In addition, he will manage the Technology Review Team and relations with external patent firms. Snow earned his bachelor’s degree in biochemistry, his master’s degree in electro-analytical chemistry, and his doctorate in chemistry from Texas Tech.

NOEL ZAHLER D.M.A. HAS BEEN APPOINTED AS DEAN OF THE COLLEGE OF VISUAL & PERFORMING ARTS. Previously, he served as dean of the College of Arts, Communication, and Design at C.W. Post campus of Long Island University. He also served as director of Music at the University of Minnesota and as head of the Carnegie Mellon University School of Music. He holds a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree from City University of New York’s Queens College, a master of fine arts degree from Princeton University and a doctorate of musical arts from Columbia University.

Alcantar currently serves as chairman for the Texas Workforce Commission, and received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in public administration from Texas Tech. In his role as chairman and commissioner, Alcantar works to implement customized services to meet the needs of Texas industries and advance the development of a strong and competitive workforce. The TWC oversees and delivers the state’s employment, training, childcare, adult education and unemployment insurance programs.

JIM WILLIAMSON WAS NAMED DEAN OF THE COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE. Prior to accepting this position, Williamson was serving as an associate professor of architecture at Cornell University. He earned his bachelor’s degree in architecture from Texas Tech University.

Additionally, he has taught at Harvard, the Rhode Island School of Design, Riche University and the Cooper Union for the advancement of Science and Art. While at Cornell, he served as director of the undergraduate architecture program.

MICHAEL GALYEAN, PH.D., DEAN OF THE COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES & NATURAL RESOURCES, HAS BEEN NAMED AS INTERIM PROVOST. Galyean replaces Provost Lawrence Schovanec who is now serving as the 17th president of the university. He became dean of the college in 2012.

STEVE FRAZE , Ph.D., chairman of the Texas Tech University Department of Agricultural Education & Communications, has been named the interim dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources. Fraze will fill the position of Dean Michael Galyean, Ph.D., who was recently named interim provost. Fraze has served as chairman of the Department of Agricultural Education & Communications since 2008. He joined the department in 1988 and became a professor in 2004.

NEWS TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY AND THE CENTRAL TEXAS COLLEGE DISTRICT (CTDC), RECENTLY PARTNERED TO COMMIT TO THE TEXAS COLLEGE CREDIT FOR HEROES PROGRAM, ESTABLISHED

BY THE TEXAS WORKFORCE COMMISSION IN 2011. This partnership will work to maximize acceptance of college credits awarded to Texas veterans and service members for their military educational experiences and nontraditional learning. Unique to Texas, College Credit for Heroes was designated as a permanent program after the passage of Senate Bill 806 in the 84th legislative session. The program has succeeded in establishing a standard evaluation process used across the state for veterans and service members to receive classroom credit through a growing network of partner schools.

RINGS HAVE DIFFERENT MEANINGS FOR DIFFERENT PEOPLE. Their circular shape represents eternity. People wear them to signify love, friendship, loyalty, success and other aspects of life. However, for one person, his Official Texas Tech Class Ring symbolizes all of the above—and then some.

George Turcios, who earned a bachelor’s degree in petroleum engineering in 2008 from Texas Tech University, was the first person in his family to attend college and graduate. He had several job opportunties before he started a great job as a reservoir engineer with Lewis Energy Corp. in San Antonio, Texas, commuting between Austin and San Antonio.

Life was good. He had accomplished a great deal. His class ring summed up all he had done with his life so far.

Turcios’ successes not only meant a lot to George, but also were special to his family—especially his grandmother.

“My grandmother was like a second mother to me,” he says. “She lived in San Miguel, El Salvador, and I spent summers there. She always built me up and encouraged me. She showed me what integrity, values and morals were.

“I dedicated my class ring to her. Inside of it, I inscribed her birthdate—9-26-35—and the words por vida, Spanish for ‘for life.’ She was proud of that ring and always grabbed my hand to look at it.

“When she was very ill, shortly before she died, she held my hand and touched my ring. She said, ‘Don’t worry. I will always be with you.’ It was as if she were blessing me.”

Turcios, the Tolericos and Reese met for the first time at the photo shoot for this story.

The Austin Rodeo rolled in around March 2015. Turcios attended the festivities and continued his fun on West Sixth Street, the Austin venue famous for partying. He met a group of Marines at a bar and began buying them drinks to show them his appreciation, as his own brother had served and been deployed.

The next morning, he woke up, and his finger felt naked. His class ring was gone.

Distraught, he retraced his steps, asking everywhere on West Sixth about the missing ring. No luck.

It was a tough lesson for Turcios—one he never would forget.

AUSTIN, TEXAS, SUFFERED A SERIOUS RAINFALL THAT CAUSED EXTREME FLOODING IN SPRING 2015.

Two months after the ring disappeared, in May, Maj. Mark Tolerico, with the Office of the Inspector General, Health and Human Services Commission in Austin, was on his nightly walk with his wife, Toni, and their Catahoula/ Labrador mix, Reese. The couple moved to Austin from New York City, where Mark had retired from the New York Police Department.

“We were alongside the GSD&M Building off Wood Street (near West Sixth Street),” Toni says. “Our dog just happens to like walking through the bushes there. We were making our way through the mulch. I’m always looking down, for whatever reason, to see what we’re stepping in, and I saw a glimmer of silver.

“I just kind of moved it around with my foot and picked it up in my hand thought, ‘Wow, this is heavy.’ I tossed it over to Mark, who was on the sidewalk, while I was going through the mulch with the dog. He caught it and pretty much started cleaning it off.”

It was Turcios’ ring.

When the couple returned home, Mark used a magnifying glass to see the inscription. Toni comments that they were impressed with the detail on the ring.

“We saw the year 1935 in it and thought that was the year the person graduated,” Mark said. “I called the Austin Police Department to see if it were stolen so we could get reconnaissance of the owner. They said they weren’t going to do anything with it.”

He then talked with a captain in his department, Dale Southerland, whom he knew graduated from Texas Tech.

The next step was when the captain contacted Mathew Wainscott, sergeant in the Lubbock office and a fellow Texas Tech graduate.

“The Tolericos sent me photos of the ring and kept the ring in their possession for safekeeping,” Wainscott says.

“I contacted Chris Snead with the Texas Tech Alumni Association, whom I worked with on the South Plains Girls Fastpitch softball board, and asked if he could find the owner. I sent him the photos.”

Snead, an associate vice president of the Alumni Association, handed off the photos to Mandy Wiley, director of affinity merchandise for the association.

When Wiley learned about the found ring, she began trying to find out who the owner was. She couldn’t identify

I couldn’t believe it.

I honestly thought it was a joke. I called my mom and told her, and we both got teary.

the person from the inscription, so she contacted Balfour, the company that made the ring. It took them a while to go through their records to find out the owner, particularly because the inscription didn’t directly relate to him.

Several months after contacting Balfour, Wiley had a name: George Turcios. Now she just had to find him.

“The hardest thing about putting a found ring with the owner is finding the owner,” she says. “It was tough to track down George,” she says. “I tried Facebook, Google and some other sites. Finally, I found him on Linked In. Long story short, a friend of his put him in touch with me, telling him we had found the ring.”

After more than a year, there was a match. The Tolericos gave the ring to Mathew Wainscott when he was in Austin for training. He gave it to Wiley when he went back to Lubbock.

WILEY THEN CALLED TURCIOS TO LET HIM KNOW SHE HAD HIS RING. “I lost it over a year ago,” he says. “I bought another one, but it wasn’t the same sentiment. I got a call from Mandy Wiley and she said, ‘We’ve found a ring. Can you tell me the inscription.’ I said, ‘Yes, it’s my grandmother’s birthday 9-26-35 and the words por vida.’ She said, ‘Well, we’ve got your ring.’ I couldn’t believe it. I honestly thought it was a joke. I called my mom and told her, and we both got teary.

“After I lost it, I thought anybody who found it would just pawn it or throw it away. I never thought, when Mandy said, ‘We’ve been looking for you for a year,’ that anyone would care about returning it. It reminded me that there are nice people in the world.

“Even when Mandy mailed it to me, my mom and I were still in shock.

I put it in a safe. I don’t want to lose it anymore. I was pretty emotional. I told Mandy to please tell the people who found it ‘Thank you so much and that this ring that meant even more because of my grandmother.’

“I never thought someone would be so nice and go to the trouble to return it. That’s a mystery to me. It’s spiritual.”

As for the Tolericos, they are pleased to have been part of something so special and to have found something that meant so much to someone.

In other words, things often come full circle.

has grown in enrollment. In 1982, my first semester here, Tech’s enrollment was about 23,000, and today it’s more than 36,000. More than size, the composition of the student body has changed dramatically. Our graduate enrollment has nearly doubled, and the diversity of the campus has seen an amazing increase. In the early 1980s, the percentage of nonwhite students was about 15 percent, compared to last fall when it was 40 percent. Besides enrollment growth, there have been significant changes in the scope of research, scholarship and creative activity. There are many different ways to measure this, but a very significant statement of Texas Tech’s status as a national research university was made earlier this year when Tech was listed among the 115 doctoral institutions that received the “Highest Research Activity” designation in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. This accomplishment speaks to the quality of our staff, students and faculty and their contributions over a long period of time.

engaged in a refinement of our strategic plan through 2025. As we move toward the 100th birthday of Texas Tech in 2023 and the 100th anniversary of our first enrolled class in 2025, we want to be sure that we are systematically monitoring our progress toward the achievement of benchmarks of Tier One status that are consistent with the mission and culture of Texas. This includes various measures of student success, such as retention and graduation rates. In addition, we want to provide high impact learning experiences that include special opportunities outside the classroom, such as research, study abroad and entrepreneurship. Enhancing our reputation as a national research university requires that we continue to grow and improve our graduate programs as well as the impact of our scholarship and creative activity.

WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF WORKING IN A UNIVERSITY? A career in higher educa-

A university is an incredibly invigorating environment. The talents and enthusiasm of students and the success and support of alumni are inspiring. I am able to work with a diverse and gifted group of colleagues. Many have achieved worldwide reputations for their professional accomplishments; others are known and respected for their sense of service and teaching.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE?

I wouldn’t say there is one ‘biggest challenge,’ but a number of issues. There is the matter of balancing competing demands. There are costs associated with quality—whether you’re talking about recruitment of students or faculty and the resources they need once they are on campus, such as scholarships, competitive salaries and instructional and research facilities. At the same time, we must be cognizant of the increasing cost of a college education and the need to be as efficient and accountable as possible. There are a number of other challenges that we address on a continual basis, such as improving our retention and graduation rates and growing our research expenditures.

WHEN YOU FIRST STARTED YOUR ACADEMIC CAREER, WHAT WERE YOUR CAREER PLANS? (DID YOU EVER IMAGINE YOU WOULD BE A UNIVERSITY PRESI-

exactly accurate. There are many of my fellow administrators who still teach and remain in touch with students, whether that be in terms of mentoring undergraduates or serving as advisors for graduate students. Granted, I no longer taught once I became dean of Art & Sciences and have not directed a graduate student since I was dean. I miss being in the classroom. This issue has been raised several times since I have become president, and I need to find a way to have some presence in the classroom, even if that means a one-hour course that might be team taught with another faculty member. Maybe a more realistic option is just to visit a class occasionally. However, I am fortunate that I have the opportunities to interact with students in a number of ways. I frequently meet with student leaders or speak at student gatherings, which provide a chance to visit and hear what’s on their minds. I also get to know students when we travel together to recruiting events.

and what we call nontraditional students, including part-time, older and working individuals. When it comes to funding for higher education, Texas has been among the most supportive of all states for the past several years, but we cannot expect state funding to return to historic high levels. Universities will need to be increasingly innovative in how they generate revenue beyond the traditional tuition model. As Chancellor Duncan has often said, we need to develop a culture of ‘sustained philanthropy.’ We should also encourage more multi-disciplinary research that can leverage large external awards. These types of collaborative efforts, and a resource such as the TTU Innovation Hub at Research Park, can help foster partnerships with industry that should create new revenue streams for the university, as well as novel educational experiences for our students.

HOW WILL HIGHER EDUCATION DIFFER IN 10 YEARS FROM HOW IT IS TODAY?

ALUMNI? Alumni are fundamental to the culture, reputation and success of a university. Tech would be a very different place without the scholarships and the physical resources that have been provided by the generosity of our alumni.

Our alumni are known for their passion and love of the university, and that plays an important role in the recruitment of students and the presence of Texas Tech in the state and the nation. By virtue of their success and love of the institution, alumni give credibility to all of us who say that a Texas Tech education makes a difference in lives. One of the most enjoyable aspects of this job is the opportunity it provides to meet with alumni and to share their inspiration with the broader university community.

Students will increasingly earn their college credits at more than one institution and in a wider variety of formats. Student transcripts will include more dual credit and hours earned at other institutions, especially community colleges. Enrollment in online courses will continue to increase. More personalized learning will be provided that includes prior learning assessment and competency-based education, as opposed to the standard student credit hour awarded for time spent in the classroom. In addition to the traditional baccalaureate degree, credentials such as certificates and badges will become increasingly popular with students as they are recognized by more employers.

My wife, Patty, is an instructor and undergraduate adviser in the Department of Mathematics & Statistics. Our older son, Tyler, will graduate in December with a master’s degree in finance at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, where he is also an assistant coach on the football staff. Cory is a junior at Southwestern University in Georgetown majoring in applied physics and mechanical engineering.

We live about a block from campus. That and the fact that both of their parents work at Tech may have something to do with where they chose to go to school. But they are Red Raider fans.

WHEN YOU’RE NOT WORKING, HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR TIME? My wife and I both enjoy running and are big sports fans. I enjoy gardening but don’t have the time to spend in the yard I once had. We enjoy getting together with friends from our neighborhood as well with friends we came to know when our kids were growing up together.

FINALLY, BACK TO TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY: WHAT MAKES IT SPECIAL/ DISTINCTIVE/STAND OUT FROM OTHER SCHOOLS? I would emphasize the love that students have for their school, the passion alumni feel for their alma mater, the quality of our faculty and staff, and the close connection of Texas Tech to the Lubbock community.

Montford is the perfect person to have co-authored the book “Board Games: Straight Talk for New Directors and Good Governance”* with Joseph Daniel McCool, a renowned authority and best selling author on CEO succession and corporate succession planning.

“Board Games” is currently is on the Amazon Best Seller list for corporate governance publications.

Herb Kelleher, co-founder, chairman emeritus and former CEO of Southwest Airlines, has written the foreword to the book in which he points out, “John and Joseph, in ‘Board Games,’ have produced a fundamental and provocative text that clearly shows that ‘old fashioned’ boards have gone the way of buckboard carriages, and I thank them for their seminal work.”

Since 2002, Montford has served as an independent director of Southwest Airlines, where he heads the Audit Committee.

Montford is president and chief executive officer of JTM Consulting, L.L.C., a state and federal government relations advisory firm he founded in 2010.

“This book is for people going onto boards and those who have been on them for a while,” Montford says. “It covers the fundamentals of board service, which include what is expected of board members and their fiduciary responsibilities.”

The book makes the point that serving on a board is more than just holding a prestigious position. Boards exist to guide and improve organizations. Board members are responsible for understanding the workings of the company they serve as well as how to offer guidance to the establishment’s leaders. They owe it to their shareholders to represent them in the best way possible.

“This writing project took two years and was a fun experience,” he says. “Even since we’ve written it, the dynamics of corporate governance have changed. ‘Proxy access’ now gives shareholders more access to the director selection process and some activist groups are now advocating term limits for directors.”

Montford is familiar with many different types of political committees and groups. His career began with active duty in the United States Marine Corps, serving as a judge advocate. He fulfilled his military obligation and began practicing law in Lubbock.

Montford was elected district attorney in Lubbock for a fouryear term. Following that role, he was elected to the Texas State Senate, serving for 14 years. He was chair of the Senate Finance and Senate State Affairs Committees. Texas Monthly magazine named him one of the Top 10 Legislators for five sessions.

Not only does Montford have the distinction of being the first chancellor of Texas Tech, but his hiring was unusual because his career had been outside the academic arena.

However, his accomplishments in the position included elevating the institution’s academic standing and facilitating some $1 billion in new construction and campus upgrades.

He served from 1996 to 2001.

“I was chancellor for five years,” Montford says. “It was the best job I ever had. During that time, I probably was introduced about 300 times as chancellor, and not once did they mention I was a University of Texas graduate.

“Everyone must have thought I was the only university chancellor in America who was a high school graduate,” he says, jokingly.

Montford holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and a juris doctor degree from The University of Texas at Austin.

However, he remains a loyal Red Raider. In fact, his wife, Debbie, currently serves as vice chair of the Texas Tech Board of Regents.

“Board Games” contains anecdotes about boards and committees, many of which include Texas Tech.

Montford’s experience also encompasses the corporate world.

After serving as chancellor, he was hired by Red Raider Ed Whitacre to head Southwestern Bell’s legislative and regulatory affairs for Texas and 12 other states. For the position, he and his family relocated to San Antonio, Texas.

As SBC merged with AT&T, he was promoted to president of the Western Region in 2005, and in 2009, he became senior vice president of state legislative affairs for AT&T. When Whitacre became chairman and CEO of General Motors Co., he hired Montford as senior adviser for government relations and global public policy in 2009. His job was to help rebuild the new GM. For the next two years, he also served as chairman of the board of the GM Foundation.

“This book reflects who John T. Montford is,” says Thomas W. Gilligan, Ph.D., director and senior fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. “He is a man of deep experience in running and overseeing organizations such as the Texas Tech University System and GM. He also is an intellectual and a lawyer. He has a penchant for practical knowledge, and this book encapsulates that.

“It is learned, topical, timely and packed with advice for board members. There’s a chapter on board self-evaluation and how to behave while serving on a board.”

Just as the climate and culture of organizations varies, every board varies. People entering board service are wise to learn as much as possible about the company.

“There’s a niche here,” Montford says. “Every enterprise has its own language. When Whitacre hired me at Southwestern Bell, they were throwing out acronyms so fast, I kept

‘Newton’s Telecom Dictionary’ nearby. In our book, we have a list of the Top 200 corporate acronyms that every board member should know.”

Montford’s board service record is too lengthy to outline here. In 2010 and 2011 he served as co-chair of the Memorial Foundation’s Executive Leadership Cabinet for the Martin Luther King, Jr., National Memorial Project Foundation in Washington D.C.; president of the Plum Foundation and a lifetime member of the Texas Bar Foundation.

He has been active in a number of civic organizations and served on many boards in San Antonio, Texas, where he resides, as well as throughout the state.

Montford’s interest in civic and philanthropic activities found him serving as 2005 chairman of the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce. He was a co-founder of the Dolph and Janey Briscoe Museum of Western Art, president of the Western Art Foundation and also chair of the Advisory Committee for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

With such a breadth of experience and knowledge under his belt, Montford imparts valuable advice to people on governing boards through “Board Games.” In fact, he refers to the book as a “roadmap” for corporate board service. *By John T. If someone had told 13-year-old Andrea Spillers Hance ’92 that she’d someday be knee-deep in the Texas shrimp industry—both owning shrimping vessels and running the organization representing Texas shrimpers—she would have taken a bite of her steak and laughed.

Andrea grew up in Midlothian, Texas, south of Dallas-Fort Worth, on her family’s ranch. They raised cattle, so beef was a staple on the menu in the Spillers’ household. When she wasn’t working around the ranch, she was participating in barrel racing and cutting horse competitions. When she was 13, she took out a loan to buy her own small herd of feeder/stocker cattle.

“I know somebody had to co-sign for that first loan,” she says, laughing. “But I did that for the next six or seven years and used the money to pay for college.”

While in high school she was a member of Midlothian High School FFA livestock judging team. One judging contest trip took her to Texas Tech.

“I have relatives in Post,” she notes. “So I was sort of familiar with West Texas. But when I visited, (for the livestock judging competition) I fell in love with Texas Tech.”

Well before completing high school, she had set her sights on Lubbock.

“I was looking forward to going to college, in part, because I spent so much of my high school years working,” says Andrea, who lived in Wall Hall. “I went to college to relax! I had so, so much fun at Tech, I never wanted to leave. I remember taking an English exam one year and sat and thought, ‘What if I intentionally fail this final? Then I would have to stay here longer.’”

Mirthfully, Andrea explained that she didn’t flunk the test, but says it was a sorely tempting plan. Still today she is a lover of all things red and black—her home is filled with Texas Tech memorabilia—and a big Raider Red sign stands sentry in her front yard.

Andrea has succeeded in many things in her career, no doubt a result of her endless energy and overall attitude—she possesses a cheerful personality, loves to laugh and has a rich sense of humor. There’s the added fact that hard work was a constant throughout her upbringing.

After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics, she earned her Realtor’s license and mortgage broker’s license and was working in Lubbock in the mortgage industry. She met her husband, Preston Hance, in Lubbock in 1992, when he was here stripping cotton. Preston, a San Benito native, was only in Lubbock temporarily—he works the South Texas region for Lubbockbased ARMTECH, a crop insurance company. In 1994, Andrea moved to San Benito to be closer to Preston, and in 1998, they married.

In addition to their healthy careers, Andrea and Preston purchased several rental homes throughout their marriage.

“There were two things I always swore I’d never be involved in—rental property and cattle,” she jokes.

Today, in addition to owning rental properties, the couple owns their own cow-calf operation.

“I have to say, after it’s all said and done, my long-term goal is to move to the city,” Andrea says. “There’s always work to do when you live on a farm.”

As a testament to her high-energy life, Andrea and Preston added to their busy lives when they purchased their first shrimp boat.

“In 2007, my husband was at dinner with his cousin,” explains Andrea, who, along with her husband, is part owner in a shrimp processing facility in Port Isabel, Texas. “He encouraged Preston to buy a shrimp boat. So, we did! We are the only people in the last 15 years to buy a boat in the shrimp industry. You can’t just buy a brand new boat because the cost would be around a million dollars. So we financed a 1970s era boat for about $200,000. It cost us another $50,000 to equip it, plus another $30,000 to purchase fuel (to fill the boat).

“I remember our maiden voyage; we went to South Padre Island to watch the boat depart, and I looked at my husband and asked, ‘What the hell did we just do?’”

In 2009, the couple added to their fleet and purchased a second boat.

Jumping into the shrimping business was a whole new world for Andrea, who says managing the financial portion was old hat for her, but becoming familiar with the massive amount of regulations controlling their new venture was eye opening. Coming from the highly regulated mortgage industry, she says she was still unprepared for the amount of government control over the shrimping industry.

“I was in the mortgage industry, financing and real estate development for 22 years,” says Andrea, who owned her own mortgage company. “Things got progressively harder after the mortgage meltdown in 2008, and one day in 2010, I just stayed home and said, ‘I can’t go back to the office.’”

Around the same time, she was pondering leaving the mortgage business, her husband heard the president of the Texas Shrimp Association, which is based in Brownsville, about 35 miles from her home in San Benito, was planning to retire.

“In the years since purchasing our boats, I had often found myself so enraged by all the regulations in this industry; most people have no idea they’re eating farm-raised shrimp from Indonesia. My husband commented that I’d be good at the (Texas) shrimp association job because I am so passionate about the issues affecting our industry,” says Andrea, who ultimately accepted the position of president with the Texas Shrimp Association in 2013. “I had never realized all the components, how we affect (the Gulf), who we affect, who affects us—this is the most challenging job, even more than opening a mortgage firm and overseeing 15 people.”

Shrimp is the No. 1 seafood consumed by Americans.

Unfortunately, a staggering 92 percent of seafood eaten in America is imported. Countries importing shrimp to the U.S. are not beholden to the strict regulations U.S. shrimpers are, where shrimping is the seventh most regulated industry in America. Imported product is farm-raised in water of undetermined cleanliness. So while imported shrimp is cheaper, what’s the cost to our health? The USDA inspects only two percent of imported shrimp, most of which contains unhealthy antibiotics.

Regulations on American shrimpers have, in part, caused a 70 percent decrease in the number of shrimping vessels in the Gulf of Mexico.

“You can’t buy insurance in this business, and it’s one of the most dangerous occupations in the world,” says Andrea.

That being said, Andrea notes, “Texas shrimpers harvest the most sought-after premium shrimp in the world.”

In the past few years, America’s high-end restaurant industry has seen a substantial growth in the popularity of locally grown and produced food. Consumers are more concerned about where their food is grown, whether the growing/ producing practices are sustainable, and whether the food is healthy. There’s a wide-open space in the farm-to-table movement for wild-caught shrimp, but many are unaware there’s a distinction between farm-raised and wild-caught.

In the past, the shrimping industry has come under fire from environmentalists, but the industry has come a long way in improving and perfecting their practice. Recently the Texas Shrimp Association was awarded the Sustainable Fisheries Leadership designation from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration).

There’s a vast difference between the quality of wildcaught shrimp and imported farm-raised shrimp. Ask your favorite restaurant to carry wild-caught shrimp and purchase wild-caught shrimp at your grocer’s—it matters.

INSIDE A SHRIMP OPERATION So what’s entailed in a shrimping operation? There’s the boat. In general, they’re 60 to 120-feet long. The upkeep is expensive—Andrea noted the first boat she and her husband purchased required $50,000 to bring it up to sailing condition.

Fuel prices are a constant factor, obviously determining profit margins of shrimpers, most of whom are part of family operations.

Shrimp is in season year-round. Texas closes its Gulf waters two months out of every year. That’s when Texas shrimpers move east, toward Florida, to fish for shrimp. Shrimpers generally stay out in the Gulf for 30 to 60 days at a time. Today’s boats are equipped with freezers and store tens of thousands of pounds of shrimp.

“The biggest catch we’ve ever had was 50,000 pounds,” says Andrea. “Unfortunately, that was when prices were at an all-time low.”

A good haul for an excursion is between 20,000 and 30,000 pounds of shrimp. As soon as the shrimp are hauled in, they’re dipped in a brine solution of salt and sugar to preserve freshness.

Shrimpers then remove the heads of shrimp and the crustaceans are flash frozen until delivery to the processing facilities. Shrimp buyers—there are only a handful in the entire country—determine where Texas Gulf shrimp are sold.

As with any new job, there were jitters and second thoughts.

In Andrea’s case, she was embarking on a whole new career— plenty of cause for nervousness.

On her first day with the association, July 1, 2013, she oversaw the Blessing of the Fleet from the Brownsville Basin.

“The Blessing of the Fleet is an annual event along coastal ports where a priest blesses the boats and crews for their safety and a bountiful harvest,” she says. “The time varies along each port, but South Texas is around July 1, which is the start of our fishing season.”

The coinciding of her first day on the job with the Blessing of the Fleet was sort of like a wink from God, a message to her that said: You’re where you need to be.

Very early on in her time with the Texas Shrimp Association, Andrea met Bobby Champion, Jr., the state coordinator for Shrimp Marketing with the Texas Department of Agriculture.

Bobby noticed Andrea’s tiny Double T necklace and said, “I’m a Red Raider, too.”

The two work closely when it comes to marketing Texas shrimp and being advocates for the industry. Champion, who received a bachelor’s in horticulture in 1993, joined TDA in 2003 as the state coordinator for Texas Wine and transitioned to the Shrimp Marketing position in 2011.

“We are connected at the hip,” comments Champion. “We do a lot together. Andrea has a tough task (as president of the Texas Shrimp Association), but she’s done a great job.”

Champion’s office creates collateral marketing materials that complement Andrea’s responsibilities of handling public relations, legislative and regulatory issues.

“TDA has been a great asset for us,” Andrea says. “I was at an industry meeting in Tampa recently and a topic of conversation was how great Texas does promoting shrimp with very little money. We are trying to get our voice back with a very small budget. We come up with creative ways to promote Texas shrimp.”

Andrea says all social media is handled in-house and she partners with Champion on seminars that educate lawmakers and consumers about Texas shrimp. One of the areas she’s focusing on now is improved labeling of product in grocery stores and on restaurant menus, so consumers can easily determine where their shrimp was harvested. Her market research shows that, if given a choice, a large segment of American diners would pay more to consume wild caught shrimp over farm raised.

Andrea says the last three years have been an amazing, and often frustrating, learning experience. Fortunately for Texas shrimpers, her determination will likely ensure that Texas shrimp is placed at the top of any menu.

Red Raiders in Rio

It didn’t take long for the scarlet and black flavor to make itself felt in Rio. In fact, if the speed at which former Red Raider All-American Janine Beckie asserted herself on the Olympic stage felt familiar, it was. Just 21 seconds into Canada’s opening match against Australia, Beckie sent a jolt through Brazil in a style that has become distinctly her own.

In those blistering 21 seconds of Beckie’s Olympic debut, the forward took a perfectly placed cross from Canada captain Christine Sinclair and connected on the fastest goal in Olympic history. The quick strike catapulted Canada to an early lead and eventually to a 2-0 preliminary round victory.

Texas Tech had arrived in Rio. “It’s an unexplainable feeling,” Beckie said. “To score in an Olympic match, let alone that fast. I turned around, and all of my teammates were right there, it’s a feeling that I will never forget.”

For those connected with Beckie’s career, the goal felt eerily similar to her collegiate debut on the Texas Tech pitch in 2012. That August evening, the young freshman wasted just 57 seconds before scoring her first collegiate goal.

And so, exactly four years later, Beckie wasted little time in providing a Texas Tech flavor to the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. “What’s so special,” Beckie said. “Is that first collegiate goal is what started it all for me. It was the beginning of a journey that I had no idea was going to be lead here, playing in Rio, and winning a bronze medal.”

The forward went on to score three goals in Canada’s run through the Olympics, which culminated with a 2-1 victory over host team Brazil in the bronze medal match. As Beckie emerged as an offensive weapon for the Canadian soccer team, Texas Tech’s track and field athletes primed for yet another powerful Olympic showing.

FOR M ER RED RA I DER sprinter Gil Roberts also made his Olympic debut in Rio. The 400-meter specialist advanced to the semifinals in the quarter-mile race before capturing gold as a member of the Team USA 4x400 relay. Roberts ran third for the squad, helping the Americans to recapture gold in the event after finishing second in 2008 to the Bahamas.

The Bahamas took bronze in the event this year, in a race featuring former Red Raider sprinter and Olympic veteran Michael Mathieu.

In what has become a familiar scarlet and black presence on the Olympic stage, Mathieu once again put on a show as part of the Bahamian mile relay squad. The sprinter ran on the second leg, helping lead the team to a bronze medal—the third-straight Olympic medal for Mathieu.

Mathieu won gold in 2012 and silver in 2008 as a member of the 4x400 team.

“No one has done it as a Red Raider like he has,” said 18th-year Texas Tech head track and field coach Wes Kittley. “He always seems to be there.”

Idalou, Texas, native Bradley Adkins, made his Olympic debut as the first Red Raider in school history to qualify in the men’s high jump. Adkins, a seven-time All-American in the event, qualified for Team USA after clearing 2.21m (7’-3”) at the Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon.

That performance came off a difficult senior season for Adkins in 2016, but even after thoughts of giving up the sport entered his mind, he felt a push to go for more.

“The goal of Rio was set in me,” he said. “Every time I said ‘Rio,’ God was saying ‘I’m not done with you yet.’”

It was with that mindset that Adkins flew over the bar in Eugene, and onward to Rio as the 10th Texas Tech track and field athlete in school history to appear in the Olympic Games in track and field.

With USA on his chest, and a worldwide audience watching, Adkins put on a show. He cleared the opening bar of 2.17m (7’-0.5”) on his third attempt and 2.22m (7’3.25”) on his second attempt—a mark he hadn’t hit since May at the Big 12 Championships.

“The old Bradley was back,” Kittley said.

Three rounds into the preliminaries, the bar crept up to 7-feet 5 inches—a height the All-American had never eclipsed outdoors.

But this was Rio. And so after clipping the bar on his first attempt, Adkins peeked towards the Olympic Stadium crowd. There, he spotted his mother and father.

They were holding a sign that read, ’It will happen.’

Adkins skipped into his step, adrenaline rushed through his veins. 1-2-3-4. He planted his fifth step, hit the sixth and banked into the curve towards the bar sitting nearly seven-and-a-half feet in the air.

“Believe,” he said to himself.

He approached the mat, planted and soared into the air, over the bar and back down towards the earth.

The bar stayed in place.

“It was such a thrill moment,” he said. “To be right there in the mix of it.”

In his Olympic debut, Adkins cleared three bars and clipped the fourth on his third attempt, just missing the mark for the finals. Yet that certainly didn’t deter his spirit.

“It was just such an awesome experience,” he said. “I took it as it was. This season, I’ve learned to persevere, to fight and to never give up and that’s what I did.”

And so, as the closing ceremonies drew over Rio, the scarlet and black mark once again left an imprint on the grandest stage athletics has to offer.

“I just love the Texas Tech family,” Kittley said. “It just makes me so happy to be able to help bring Olympians here and see the pride. You can’t buy those moments for a university. The family of Red Raiders and Lady Raiders in Lubbock and all over the world are so proud.

It means everything.”

My daughter, Laura, a registered nurse, is a school nurse in Lubbock and has studied in the master’s program at the Texas Tech School of Nursing. My son, Cliff, is general manager and program host of a Lubbock radio station and has both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in political science from Texas Tech. Cliff’s wife, McKenzie, holds a bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate from Texas Tech. I have two grandchildren, Andrew, age 9, and Ava, age 5.

worked full-time as a radio broadcaster while a student at Texas Tech. I was a member of the Society of Professional Journalists-Sigma Delta Chi and served on committees organizing the annual Mass Communications Week during the spring semesters at Texas Tech.

LINDSAY BAKER (BA ’69 History, MA ’72, Ph.D. ’77) Rio Vista, Texas, is celebrating a September release of his newest book: “Portrait of Route 66: Images from the Curt Teich Postcard Archives.” Four years ago, T. Lindsay spent a week in Lake County Discovery Museum in Wauconda, Illinois, near Chicago, working in the production files of the old Curt Teich and Company postcard publishing house. Teich was the largest postcard publisher in the United States and issued hundreds of thousands of postcards from the turn of the 20th century through the 1970s. In the archives, he sought black-and-white original photographs that customers submitted to Teich for the production of color postcards during the decades before the invention of color photography. He found a treasure trove of these “lost” images and used the original Teich company finding aids to comb through the production files for postcards printed for communities the entire length of former U.S. Highway 66, the fabled thoroughfare that starting in 1926 connected Chicago with Los Angeles. From the nation’s largest collection of Route 66 images available, the book features about 150 select photographs and the postcards they inspired. T. Lindsay remains a faculty member in history at Tarleton State University and directs its W.K. Gordon Center for Industrial History of Texas. He teaches at the Stephenville campus and administers the museum at the Thurber Ghost Town on I-20 midway between Fort Worth and Abilene. Recognized as a distinguished alumnus of the Texas Tech University Department of History, years ago he began placing his personal and professional papers in the Southwest Collection at Texas Tech.

Baker’s next two book projects are “Eating Up Route 66,” a study of the foodways of roadside dining along former U. S. Highway 66, for the University of Oklahoma Press, and a popular guide to the historic architecture of Glen Rose in Somervell County, Texas, co-authored with photographer Paul Chaplo, for the Texas A&M University Press.

In high school, Berto Garcia suffered a concussion playing football. That led to a science fair project and the creation of a helmet-and-shoulder pads system that stabilizes the head immediately after impact. SAMUEL EVERETT “SAM” CURL , Ph.D., passed away Aug. 2, 2016. He was born Dec. 26, 1937, in Fort Worth, and grew up on a farm near Tolar. He earned a junior college diploma from Tarleton State University in 1957, a bachelor’s degree from Sam Houston State University in 1959, a master’s degree in animal genetics from the University of Missouri in 1961 and a doctorate in animal physiology from Texas A&M University in 1963. He was a U.S. Army officer, attaining the rank of captain.

Curl completed an American Council on Education Academic Administration Internship at Oklahoma State University in 1972-73 as special assistant to the president, and he was president of Phillips University in Enid, Okla., from 1976 to 1979. He has authored or co-authored three books and 95 scientific or technical publications.

He is a past president of the Southern Association of Agricultural Scientists, the Southern Region Administrative Heads and the Lubbock Economic Council. He is past chairman of the board of the Mid-America International Agricultural Consortium, and has received Distinguished Alumnus awards from the University of Missouri and Sam Houston State University.

Curl served a total of 31 years at Texas Tech University, including three years as associate vice president for academic affairs. He was dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources at Texas Tech from 1979 to 1997. From 1997 to 2004, he was dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources at Oklahoma State University, director of the Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station and director of the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service.

After retiring in 2004, he consulted professionally, working for Tarleton State University as executive assistant to the provost and special assistant for research and development to the dean of agriculture and human sciences. He also was a consultant for Ag Workers Mutual Auto Insurance Co. in Fort Worth.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Behrends Curl ’65, ’76.

DONALD LAMAR “DON” HARRIS , Lubbock, died July 29.

Harris graduated in 1954 with a bachelor’s degree in finance from Texas Tech University. He served on the Texas Tech Foundation Board and was a member of the Chancellor’s Council. He founded the All But One Club of Texas Tech.

In addition, at one of the Texas Tech Alumni Association Senior Exit Dinners, he paid for every graduating senior attending to have a photo made with the Masked Rider. He also established a scholarship endowment in the College of Business Administration at Texas Tech. Harris taught appraisal courses and real estate at Texas Tech, for the Appraisal Institute and for other organizations.

Harris was an appraiser, with memberships in the Appraisal Institute, the Counselors of Real Estate, the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers and the Institute of Business Appraisers. He was past president of the Texas Plains Chapter of the Appraisal Institute, Lubbock Association of Realtors, and State Director of the Texas Association of Realtors. He was Salesman of the Year the first year in business and Realtor of the Year three years later.

He received the Distinguished Contributor award from the Association of Realtors. He recently was honored with a 60-year pin by the Lubbock Board of Realtors which is the first one ever presented. He was a member of the National Guard. He was a member of Toastmasters and a Paul Harris fellow of the Rotary Club.

He and Barbara were responsible for cotton being designated as the State Fiber and Fabric of Texas and for a Cotton Boll being placed on a State license plate.

He was honored with the Volunteer of the Year award by the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce in 1998. Recently, he had been an active board member of the Bayer Museum of Agriculture in Lubbock.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara.

NELDA MCQUIEN LANEY

1943 - 2016 Texas Tech and Texas Tech Alumni Association lost a special alumna when Nelda McQuien Laney passed away Aug. 24. She was 73 years old.

Nelda remained loyal to Texas Tech University since she graduated with honors in 1965, with a bachelor’s degree in education, specializing in speech and English. She and her husband, James E. “Pete” Laney, a 1966 graduate, met as freshmen at Texas Tech.

Most recently, Nelda served as chair of the fundraising committee for the $4.5 million expansion to the McKenzieMerket Alumni Center. The campaign began in 2008.

Her dedication and persistence paid off when the spacious and elegantly-appointed expansion of 10,694-square feet opened in 2010, with the Bill and Peggy Dean Grand Reception Hall as the centerpiece.

Nelda served Texas Tech and the Alumni Association in other ways. She was president of the Texas Tech Alumni Association National Board of Directors in 2010. In 2009, Nelda was named a Distinguished Alumna of the College of Education.

She and Pete received, in 2007, the Lauro F. Cavazos Award, presented annually by the Alumni Association to individuals or couples who contribute significantly to Texas Tech and the Alumni Association through individual efforts, public recognition and/or financial support.

Another significant accomplishment of hers was initiating the Official Texas Tech Ornament program in 1997 to raise scholarship money. She designed many of the holiday ornaments, each depicting a campus hallmark.

Nelda’s inspiration for the Texas Tech ornament began while her husband, Pete, served in the Texas House of Representatives from 1973 to 2007. He served as speaker of the Texas House from 1993 to 2003.

When Pete became Speaker of the House, he tasked Nelda with restoring the House side of the Capitol to its original design. The enormous project was completed before the January 1995 legislative session began. Nelda was honored with special recognition for her role in Capitol Restoration by the Texas Women’s Alliance. She also received the Star of Texas Preservation Award for Capitol Restoration.

Realizing the preservation project would be ongoing, Nelda began the Capitol Ornament Project in 1996. Each year, an ornament with a Texas theme was sold in the Capitol Gift Shop and other places across the state, raising significant funds.

Nelda was the first recipient of the “Woman of Achievement” Award from the Texas Federation of Women’s Clubs. She was named Woman of the Year in Plainview and Hale Center and inducted into the Future Homemakers of America Texas Hall of Fame. Nelda was named a Lifetime Member of the Girl Scouts.

Surviving her are family, friends and many others whose lives she has touched. She is survived by her husband, Pete.

RAYMOND KIM , a graduate student in finance in the Texas Tech University’s Rawls College of Business, was honored as an emerging scholar at the Community Banking and Policy Conference in September in St. Louis. The conference awarded the emerging scholars with scholarships to attend the conference at St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank. Kim plans to use the scholarship as a way to further his research in macrofinance and banking as a doctoral candidate in finance at the Rawls College of Business.

OLGA PEREGRINO , a chemical biology master’s student in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, has been awarded an all-expenses-paid travel grant to attend the American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB) meeting in Austin, Texas, this summer. Plant Biology 2016 is an international meeting that welcomes more than 1,300 scientists from 40 countries and is considered by many in the field to be the top science event of the year.

BRITTANY NEILSON , a doctoral student in the

Experimental-Human Factors program in the Department of Psychological Sciences, was awarded the NASA Texas Space Grant Consortium Graduate Student Fellowship for the second time while at Texas Tech. She was selected based upon her academic merit and interest in space applications of human factors research. She has previously interned at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, and hopes to work for NASA one day.

Psychological Sciences, will receive its ninth consecutive gold level award from the HFES awards committee at the 2016 HFES National Meeting Sept. 19-23 in Washington, D.C. The HFES Student Chapter works to develop professional skills and opportunities of students interested in Human Factors and Ergonomics. The gold level award recognizes the many activities conducted annually by the chapter and the dedication of its student members.

MIRIAM ARMSTRONG , a doctoral student in the

major from Cypress, Texas, spent the past two semesters in China, studying abroad and interning at the U.S. Foreign Commercial Service for the U.S. Embassy in Beijing. She secured this internship, which lasted from March to the middle of June, after working at the Department of Commerce in Summer 2015.

Experimental-Human Factors program in the Department of Psychological Sciences, won the Best Student Poster Award at the recent Houston Human Factors and Ergonomics Society 2016 Symposium, a regional human factors conference. Her poster, “Robots to the Rescue: Tele-Operator Training for Urban Search and Rescue,” detailed two experiments performed at Texas Tech that investigated the factors involved when tele-operators learn to make more accurate judgments about whether they are capable of driving a robot through tight spaces. Armstrong’s adviser is Keith Jones, Associate Professor in the Department of Psychological Sciences.
