Back in the Day

TE X AS TEC H L O S T three great supporters in a space Oǖ ǛVG WGGKS TIúS SPRúNH Gerald Rogers was not a Tech alumnus, and that might surprise some because he was the public address announcer for Texas Tech football and basketball games for 31 years (1969 to 2000). He announced a total of 729 games and, in all this time, he never missed a home football game.

He was named an Honorary Saddle Tramp by the organization, recognizing his many contributions. + ǛRST MGT )GRCLF WIGN IG WCS TIG CSSúSTCNT DCSketball coach at Lubbock’s Monterey High School.

He served the school as assistant coach, head coach, student activities director and assistant principal. The bulk of his career was with the Region 17 Education Service Center in Lubbock where he spent 22 years and retired as executive director in l989.

He and his wife, Babs, were strong supporters of Texas Tech. I frequently saw them at pre-game receptions prior to many out-of-town football games.

He passed away on March 15.

ON E TH I NG WOUL D always be certain when I traveled to Haskell, Throckmorton or Stamford to attend a meeting of the Rolling Plains Chapter of the Alumni Association—Elbert Johnson would be there.

He was as Red and Black as it gets.

Elbert attended Tech from 1947 to 1952, graduating with a bachelor of science degree in education.

He lettered four years in football and played in the Sun Bowl in El Paso and in the Raisin Bowl in Fresno, Calif., in 1949.

His senior year, he was honored by being unanimously elected captain. After graduation, he played professional football with the Chicago Cardinals in the NFL and the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the Canadian League. Although he began his career coaching football, he ended it as a pharmacist in Haskell.

Elbert was a community leader in Haskell serving on the school board for nine years and also serving as president of the Haskell Chamber of Commerce.

Most importantly, he was a loyal and devoted fan of everything Texas Tech. I enjoyed every visit with him and will miss him greatly.

He passed away April 15.

Haley waved the Texas Tech banner in Tyler and throughout East Texas for many years. He was born in Lubbock, graduated from Texas Tech and in 1969, moved to Tyler, where he operated Overhead Door Company.

I knew Bob because his son Robert played youth baseball in Lubbock and also was a pitcher at Monterey High School. Bob was an avid baseball fan. If you didn’t want to know what he thought about a game or play, you probably should not ask. *G WCS ONG OÇ– TIG Ç›RST PGRSONS + EONTCETGF ĂşN 6YLGR WIGN + TOOK TIĂşS JOD in 1978 because he was an avid fan and a big supporter of both the Red Raider Club and the Texas Tech Alumni Association. My Class of 1956 at Lubbock High has frequent reunions. I had a good friend in that class who passed away in 2012, and he once told me that we grew up in the best time possible. When I stop to think about that, I have to agree.

I grew up listening to radio. The format of radio required the use of your imagination. In that regard, radio was more creative than TV. When you watch a TV program, what you see is what you get. In radio, a good script, TCLGNTGF PGRÇ–ORMGRS CNF SKĂşLLGF SOUNF GÇ—GETS PGOPLG EOULF ERGCTG MCNY Fúǖferent illusions in your mind. Imagination is limitless. /OST OÇ– TIG PROHRCMS WG LĂşSTGNGF TO MOVGF TO 68 9IGN 68 Ç›RST ECMG to Lubbock in the early ’50s, it was crude by today’s standards, but it was 68 CNF WG GMDRCEGF SOMGTIĂşNH FúǗGRGNT 6IG NGTWORK PROHRCMS WGRG CLL “canned.â€? Until the microwave relay system was invented, most communities watched network programs that were two to three weeks old. They WGRG Ç›LMGF LĂşVG CNF TIG Ç›LM WCS TIGN PUT ĂşN ECNS CNF MCĂşLGF TO CǘLĂşCTG TV stations. It didn’t really matter. It was TV. First run movies would play at the Lindsey Theater downtown. About a month or so later, they would play at the Tower near Tech or the Plaza in the Plaza Shopping Center on 26th Street. They would much later make a third appearance at the Tech Theater, again across from the campus.

People thought nothing of arriving at the movies late. They would watch the ending and then would come the cartoons and the news. Then they would watch what they had missed earlier and either stay to watch it until the end or just leave.

Halloween was one of my favorite times. We dressed up and roamed TIG NGúHIDORIOOFS ǛLLúNH OUR DCHS WúTI ECNFY 0O ONG WORRúGF CDOUT DGing poisoned or someone putting razor blades in the candy. Halloween carnivals were conducted at all the elementary schools. That’s all gone now thanks to unbalanced minds and political correctness.

I learned how to play baseball on a vacant lot in our neighborhood long before Little League. If you hit a ball into Mrs. Dixon Smith’s backyard, it was the devil to pay. This situation presented a real challenge for me beECUSG + IúT LGǖT ICNFGF CNF /RS 5MúTI�S DCEKYCRF WCS úN RúHIT ǛGLF 6IG rule was it was an automatic out if you hit into the backyard.

I further perfected my baseball skills by paying a nickel to ride the bus from 20th Street down 19th Street to Avenue L, where the Boys Club was only a three-block walk. I did this every afternoon, whether my team was playing or not. My dad would pick me up on his way home.

I remember when Jackie Robinson broke the color line in baseball. I recently saw the movie “42,� and it brought back many memories—some of them not very pleasant. It is hard to believe that African Americans were treated that way— probably one of the most unpleasant memories from that period.

Drugs were mostly what you got at the drug store. I remember hearing about drug abuse and dope peddlers but nothing close to today’s scale.

I had great parents. They loved me and encouraged me, but we also had discipline. If I got out of line, I got a Â?SPCNKĂşNH ÂŽ + Ç›NCLLY ICF GNOUHI OÇ– TIOSG “spankings,â€? so I tried not to get out of line. My mother was very conservative.

Girls did not buy lavish dresses to wear to the junior-senior prom. I don’t ever recall any guy wearing a tux. We just put on our Sunday clothes and had a good time—no limos—no expensive dinners—no motel rentals. I can’t believe we developed any social skills at all in that we were deprived of all those things. + FúF NOT OWN C ECR UNTúL + HRCFUCTGF ǖROM 6GEI ICF C JOD CNF EOULF CǗORF TO DUY one. I drove the cars my parents owned. My dad had a 1957 Bellaire Chevrolet that I drove everywhere. I wish we had kept that car because it apparently would be worth some money today.

How did we ever make it to adulthood without a cell phone, an iPad or the Internet?

How did we ever graduate from high school and succeed at anything without taking all these state-mandated tests that students have to take now?

Did we have problems? Certainly. It wasn’t a Utopia. It was just a more simple time, and I have to say it was a great time to grow up in America.

A pound of the low-micronaire cotton can pick up more than 30 pounds of crude oil, and its natural waxiness helps to repel water. JULY 1. Perlmutter was the director of the School of Journalism & Mass Communication in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at the University of Iowa. Perlmutter previously was a professor in the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Kansas, and received his doctorate from the University of Minnesota in 1996. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. A documentary photographer, he also is the author or editor of nine books on political communication and persuasion. BARD WILL JOIN A PRESTIGIOUS NEW RESIDENCY PROGRAM LAUNCHED BY THE NETWORK FOR PUBLIC HEALTH LAW AND THE ROBERT WOOD JOHNSON FOUNDATION . Bard, the Alvin R. Allison Professor of Law and director of Texas Tech Law’s Health Law Program and J.D./M.D. Program, was one of six senior law professors selected for the Scholars in Residence fellowship, intended to sharpen their teaching and scholarly work while providing legal expertise to public health agencies. Bard is an adjunct full professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the Texas Tech University Health Science Center’s School of Medicine.

T

he average college student changes majors three times during his or her college career, but John Thomasson, a 1971 graduate from Texas Tech, didn’t even decide on a major until his senior year. Somehow a degree plan never even crossed his mind until he was close to graduation and someone said he would have to choose one.

After adding up his hours, he realized he had the best chance of graduating with a physical education degree. So he piled on 21 credit hours his last semester and graduated from Tech. His livelihood during the last 20-plus years is light years away from a P.E. teacher.

Thomasson’s work can be seen in larger than life displays on the sides of buildings, inside museums and even chain restaurants around the country. Even more interesting than his intricate paintings is the story of how a native of Crockett, Texas, WIO TIOUHIT IG WCS HOúNH TO �RUN OǗ TIG ǖCEG Oǖ TIG GCRTIŽ WIGN IG MCFG IúS ǛRST TRúP TO .UDDOEK úS NOW C EGLGDRCTGF West Texas artist.

So how does someone with a degree in P.E. end up as an artist?

Well, Thomasson said he always loved to sketch as a child, but WIGN ĂşT ECMG TO HGTTĂşNH C FGHRGG IĂşS LOVG Ç–OR CRT JUST FĂşFNÂ?T Ç›T “At that point in time, the hippie movement was starting,â€?

Thomasson explains. “It seemed like in the art department if you were going to be an art major, they gave you these big tablets and you carried them across campus. Everybody I ever saw carrying one across campus had long hair and was getting into the hippie movement, and I just wasn’t going to be equated with that, so I didn’t major in art.�

So after graduating from Tech, Thomasson and his new bride, the former Elizabeth Cavin ‘71, moved back to Crockett to begin their life. As Lubbock does for so many, the city worked its way into the family’s heart, and in 1987, the Thomassons moved back to Raiderland. Thomasson brought an up-and-coming concrete overlay system with him, but after unsuccessful attempts of getTĂşNH ĂşT OÇ— TIG HROUNF IG KNGW IG NGGFGF TO FO SOMGTIĂşNH GLSG He asked a buddy for a job as a contractor and began overseeing the demolition of an old building. “Through the demolition of that old building in the Depot District, I met a guy that was putting in a club,â€? Thomasson says. “He wanted some windows and doors put up on the wall, I looked at his picture and I said ’well I could paint that on there for you.’ I hadn’t done anything like that very often, but I knew I could paint and I had always kept up with painting pictures.

boots on the side of a building in downtown Lubbock that, at the time, housed Lonesome Dove, a dancehall and live-music venue. “A guy was on vacation from Kansas City when I was painting those boots on the Lonesome Dove,� Thomasson reminisces. “He saw me, he pulled in there and asked me who the artist was that was painting those boots. I told him ’I was,’ and he asked if I would go to Kansas City and paint him a mural, so I did.�

To date Thomasson has painted murals for chain restaurants from Abuelo’s and On the Border to Chili’s and Chimy’s; it’s easier for him to list the states he hasn’t been to than the ones he has. Taking on these jobs didn’t come without their fair share of challenges though. Thomasson initially had a fear of heights and his job would sometimes require him to be dangerously high on the side of a building painting. “We rented a cherry picker,� said Thomasson. “I was just going to get the feel of it, so I went up a little bit and didn’t really like it—it was 40 feet to the top. So I went home for lunch and told my wife, ’I’ve got to either get over this fear of heights or just not do this job.’�

Thomasson went back after lunch eager, conquered his fear and climbed the 40 feet to the top. He couldn’t convince one of his employees to let his fear of heights go though. Â?9G WGRG HOĂşNH TO RCPPGL OÇ— TIG Ç–CEG OÇ– TIG DUĂşLFĂşNH FOWN to where we needed to work,â€? Thomasson says, chuckling. “The guy asked, ’Do they have a restroom in the building?’ so I took him back down there to show him where it was, and I’ve never seen him since.â€?

'VGN TIOUHI IGLP WCS ICRF TO Ç›NF 6IOMCSSON EONTĂşNUGF TO paint murals throughout the years, and it proved to be a steady source of income. When the economy crashed in 2008 however, restaurants basically quit building. It was then that Thomasson got back into painting pictures and portraits that now lend DGCUTY CNF CPPGCL TO TIG WCLLS OÇ– IĂşS STUFĂşO OÇ— 9OOFROW 4OCF in Lubbock. Now, Thomasson is focusing on getting his art into galleries where it will be available to a larger audience. “I’ve gotten back into painting paintings, which I haven’t done in years,â€? Thomasson said. “It’s been nice to get back to it.â€?

No matter what avenue Thomasson chooses to travel, whether it be murals or portraits, what started as a humble beginning has turned into a lucrative career—and a fascinating story of happenstance that began in Lubbock. “It all started when a guy came to buy windows and doors from me when I was tearing down a building as a contractor,�

We received a thought-provoking letter at the Alumni Association from alumnus Mike Tumlinson ’81. +N IĂşS LGTTGR IG WCS RGÇ?GETĂşNH ON TIG TUĂşTĂşON DĂşLLS IGÂ?F SGGN FURing his son’s recent matriculation at Texas Tech. He noted that tuition bills and their nebulous content are increasing at about the same rate—a disheartening theme, especially given the anemic state of the current economy. The term “tuitionâ€? is often used loosely, because tuition bills include fees as well.

It’s too verbose for most of us to say “tuition and fees bill,� so we stick with “tuition� as a catchall term for what it costs to go to college.

These bills include descriptors such as “Special Inst Fee – Writing� and “Financial and Record Svcs Fee,� and no further explanation. It’s easy to see why tuition and fees bills are puzzling. I perused the tuition statement Mike submitted with his letter, and I agreed that it was tough to wrap my brain around. So, I set forth to decrypt a current tuition bill.

My intern, Katelyn Perry, is an agricultural communications major, which is in the Department of Agricultural Education & Communications, in the College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources. She was kind enough to allow me to utilize her Fall 2013 bill* as my sample. An often-overlooked aspect of Texas Tech is outreach. Many faculty members don’t just teach classes and perform research; they also make it their business to expose communities and prospective students to the university. Outreach encompasses a VCRúGTY Oǖ FúǗGRGNT ǖUNETúONS úN TIúS ECSG úT WCS OPGNúNH UP C UNúVGRSúTY LCDORCTORY TO three junior high students from a small West Texas town.

The proximal location of Whiteface, Texas, is 45 miles west of Texas Tech University.

Figuratively, it’s worlds away.

The most recent census puts the population of Whiteface—thusly named in 1924 for the Hereford cattle that were run on the nearby C.C. Slaughter Ranch—at 446.

Although the town is tiny, it is all Texas: the largest sources of income in Cochran County, where Whiteface is situated, are derived from farming, ranching and oil.

Texas Tech’s enrollment is roughly 71 times larger than the total population of Whiteface. The university is a microcosm of the world “out there.� Students hail from the world over. There are countless science labs on campus and millions of dollars of equipment that power the research performed therein. Tech is often an overwhelming place for kids raised in vast metropolitan areas, not to mention little bitty towns.

The nationally recognized team of Whiteface I.S.D. 6th graders, who’ve been dubbed the Arsenic Arresters, includes Brett Wilson, Hudson Sanders and George Wiebe. Their mentor was Melanie Barnes, Ph.D., a senior research associate in the Geosciences Department within Texas Tech’s College of Arts & Sciences. They were the 1st place winner for Texas, then the team went on to win the Southwest U.S. regional Ecybermission competition.

The team traveled to national competition in Washington, D.C., where they received the Army Values Award, which is given to the top team, out of 16 teams, for the students’ display throughout the competition of the Army Core Values: loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity and personal courage.

THE TEACHER AND HER STUDENTS Laura Wilbanks, a smiling, soft-spoken woman, is not easily intimidated. A science teacher at Whiteface Independent School District, she has dedicated her career to creating a love of science in the kids she teaches. And she knows her kids are as sharp and well prepared as any kids, anywhere. She sponsors Whiteface I.S.D. science teams, and, since 2005, her students have advanced to national competition every year—winning more than $750,000 in college savings bonds through the competitions. “I’ve taught for 25 years and have been in a science classroom for about 18 years,� says Wilbanks, who attended Tech and ultimately graduated from New Mexico State University. “When students from a small town, 6-man football school compete side-by-side with students from across the nation—students from exclusive private boarding schools and boarding schools for the profoundly gifted and 5-A public schools which are STEM magnet schools—and my kids come out winners and show the greatest character of the whole bunch—that is what motivates me to continue working very long hours after school with these kids. “They may be from a town of 400 residents that’s hardly a spot on a map, but they can stand their own next to anyone, thanks to fantastic mentors like we’ve had over the years from Texas Tech University. It’s the professionals who take their time to meet with me and the students—and allow us to work alongside them in the

This year one of Wilbanks’ teams was a group of three boys—Brett Wilson, Hudson Sanders and George Wiebe—who chose to study arsenic levels in West Texas farm soils, plants and water. They knew that the World Health Organization reports that arsenic is a known carcinogen and is the No. 1 environmental chemical concern for human health in the 7NĂşTGF 5TCTGS CNF WORLFWĂşFG ˆˆ “The arsenic is naturally occurring in the layers of the Ogallala aquifer,â€? explains Wilbanks. “The high levels in Louisiana and South Texas are the result of arsenic present in pesticides used in the ’20s and ’30s.

But here in West Texas, it’s mostly a naturally-occurring element. Just like some areas have naturally high levels OÇ– HOLF OR SĂşLVGR OR Ç?UORĂşFG OUR CRGC ĂşS IĂşHI ĂşN CRSGNĂşE ÂŽ Calling themselves the “Arsenic Arresters,â€? the team of three conducted research to determine if arsenic levels in the water of West Texas exceeded the EPA limit—and they found that it did. They tested drinking water, playa wetlands, and soil from irrigated and dry-land farms.

The program Laura Wilbanks sponsors is called Science Rocks U. It provides STEM enrichment for middle school students in Whiteface, Texas.

STEM is an acronym: Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. STEM programs in America’s schools are expanding, and there are even STEM magnet schools and STEM grants.

The push behind STEM programs is to encourage students to stay interested in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math, and choose these fields when entering college.

Wilbanks says, “It’s the STEM fields that keep America competitive and at the forefront of global innovation.”

THEIR RESEARCH Melanie Barnes is a senior research associate in the Department of Geosciences, which is in the College of Arts & Sciences. She was approached by Wilbanks about mentoring the Arsenic Arresters. Wilbanks had been told by a researcher she’d worked with in the Department of Chemistry at Texas Tech that Barnes’ labs had equipment pertinent to the boys’ project. Wilbanks reached out to Barnes. Â?#T Ç›RST SIG 9ĂşLDCNKS JUST CSKGF úǖ WG ICF CN #TOMĂşE #DSORPTĂşON Spectrometer (AA) she could use to measure arsenic in some samples associated with water,â€? Barnes explains. “She was familiar with an AA from her previous work. Unfortunately, we didn’t have one‌our old one self destructed a few years back and the one in the Environmental Toxicology Department was unavailable due to the lack of an operator. However, we had something better: an Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectrometer (ICP). “The only issue was that she was unfamiliar with an ICP and therefore would need my assistance to use it. As we talked it became clearer that digesting the samples and then analyzing them in my lab would be easier, and, in addition, would give the boys a real live experience in the lab. It was my understanding that, previously, they had just given their samples to a lab to analyze and could not even get permission to go into the lab and see how things were done.â€?

The students and Wilbanks brought their samples to Barnes’ lab, where they processed their samples. They put together an abstract for competition that included the following discoveries: the highest levels of arsenic were in TIG SOúL Oǖ úRRúHCTGF ǖCRMLCNF LOECL WGTLCNFS WGRG NGHCTúVGLY CǗGETGF DY TIG presence of arsenic; in homes, higher arsenic levels were discovered in the

Thirteen new Texas Tech scholarships have been created and 15 have been enhanced as a result of a matching gift program initiated by the Texas Tech Alumni Association.

At their Spring 2013 meeting, the Texas Tech Alumni Association National Board of Directors approved the establishment of a $500,000 scholarship matching initiative to remain open through the end of 2014. The program will allow association chapters, individuals and other groups to maximize their giving power by having a gift matched by the Alumni Association.

In 2012, the Alumni Association facilitated or awarded 389 scholarships Ç–OR Âą ˆ Â?9G VĂşGW TIĂşS ĂşNĂşTĂşCTĂşVG CS C RGCL DGNGÇ›T TO OUR EICPTGRS CS WGLL CS TIG university,â€? says Bill Dean, Ed.D., executive vice president and CEO of the alumni association. “It enables chapters to support even more students with scholarships.â€?

A certain amount has been set aside to match chapter gifts. To date, $490,000 in commitments has been received to date, $300,000 of which is in cash. Of that amount, $202,000 was received from chapters, and $288,000 came from non-chapters. The Texas Tech Alumni Association chapter network is growing stronger.

There are more than 80 chapters, with more that 40 of them in Texas and one in London. Chapter members are interested in staying in touch with Texas Tech and with other alumni and get together for happy hours, gamewatching parties and other social events.

Many Alumni Association chapters and other groups raise funds so they can present scholarships to future Red Raiders from their area or to those WIO ǛT EGRTCúN ERúTGRúC 5OMG EICPTGRS ICVG RGCEIGF TIG ¹ MúNúMUM amount to endow their scholarships.

The matching initiative will enable some chapters without endowments to reach their goals.

I am currently the College of Human Sciences Ambassadors president and have been involved with this organization since my freshman year. I’m also on the leadership team at The Wesley Foundation, a campus ministry.

Which Texas Tech tradition do you like the most? My favorite tradition is during football season when the Saddle Tramps put red streamers around campus and wrap the Will Rogers statue. It gets me excited knowing there’s a football game coming up and all the school spirit that’s around our large campus brings us a little bit closer.

What’s your favorite nightspot? When I am not stuck in the Architecture building or Interior Design Studio, I enjoy going to The Roof with my friends, and of course, Chimy’s is just a classic.

What’s your favorite restaurant in Lubbock? My favorite restaurant in Lubbock would have to be Rosa’s, I am such a sucker for that place, but when I am not on that college budget and can splurge, The Funky Door is always at the top of my list.

What is your preferred form of communication with friends? I got an iPhone just to be in contact with family, school and work 24/7 by email.

I work and have classes during the day and don’t access my phone for phone calls or texting that often, so emails are convenient for my family and I to keep in contact. Otherwise, I keep up with friends via text or Instagram.

I did a summer Art Intensive Program at New York University my junior year of high school, and when I got there, I felt very disconnected from the university. Everything about this Texas Tech tradition is BEAUTIFUL‌. from the nice temperature (usually) to the choir singing holiday songs. The lighting ceremony, when all the buildings surrounding Memorial Circle are illuminated in red, white and orange lights, is mesmerizing.

What is the best experience you’ve had at Texas Tech? Attending football games. I’ve never really experienced anything quite like that.

The atmosphere and the fans are like none other. I think our football games really show how much school pride we have, and that is pretty awesome.

Tech football scored high as a fav amongst students.

What is your preferred form of communication with friends? Phone calls. It’s not always easy to reach everyone with their busy schedules.

But I think phone calls make things more personal than text messaging all the time. If I could, I would write letters to everyone, but I don’t think it’s the most practical thing to do in this day and age.

What’s your favorite restaurant in Lubbock? My favorite place to eat has to be Gardski’s. With the oldest restaurant structure in Lubbock, it reminds me of my grandma’s home and her cooking. When you’re there, you have to get the chipotle chicken or the chicken fried steak. You’re going to walk out with a full stomach and happy heart.

Wendy Acosta Quintero Major: Environmental Engineering College: Edward E. Whitacre College of Engineering Hometown: Valledupar, Cesar, Colombia Why/how did you choose to attend Texas Tech? Were you looking at any other universities? Living in Colombia, my dad, Manuel, came to Tech as an exchange student in order to pursue his master’s degree.

From pictures to anecdotes, I began to fall in love with Tech and decided this was where I wanted to be.

Which Texas Tech traditions do you like the most? The Victory Bells in the Administration Building are by far my favorite tradition. I remember when I lived on campus I always had my windows open, just in case they began to ring. It always gives me the chills to know the meaning behind the ring, whether it is a victory in sports or any other special occasion! I also enjoy going to Carol of Lights with a group of friends. It’s the best way to start the Christmas season.

What is the best experience you’ve had at Texas Tech? I will never forget my ǛRST ǖOOTDCLL HCMG /Y ROOMMCTG ,GSSúEC EONVúNEGF MG úT WOULF be fun, so I gave it a shot. Although she had to narrate what was going on every minute of the game, why they were stopping and why we were sitting down so often, I truly did enjoy it. It was an amazing feeling being in a full stadium and knowing I was a part of something big. Now I make sure to go to as many games as possible, and proudly sing along with everyone in the stands.

What is your favorite part about living in Lubbock? Having lived all my life in the small community of Mushaisa in the Guajira department in northern Colombia, set up a standard for what a close-knit community is like. Living in Lubbock makes me feel much more comfortable. I enjoy Lubbock as a college town because there are many things to do, it’s very easy to build great relationships, and there are not that many distractions.

In what organizations are you involved as a student? During my two years at Tech, I became a member of President’s Select and Chancellor’s Ambassadors. I also have had the opportunity to help build a student organization for Tech Terry Scholars. Within the organization, I served as president for two terms, and now serve as a mentor for the incoming business and ag students, as well as chairman of the executive board. I was also recently chosen to be part of the inaugural class for the Rawls Business Leadership Program. (The Terry Foundation provides four-year scholarships for Texas resident students attending Texas Tech University and several other universities in the state of Texas. That sense of belonging is ultimately what made me choose Tech over some of the larger law schools in the state. The atmosphere at Tech reminded me of the way I felt at A&M. I knew that if I came to Tech, I wouldn’t be just another face in the crowd; I would be welcomed as a student and as a new friend.

What organizations are you involved in as a student? I am a member of the Tech Law Republicans and the Aggie Bar Association, as well as the President of the Intellectual Property Students Association.

was very involved in student government. I thought for a large portion of my time in college that I would go to graduate school for engineering and, ultimately, spend my career as an engineer.

In the fall of 2010, I had a conversation with a family friend who studied engineering at the University of Texas, then went to law school at Texas Tech. Law and engineering seemed to be an odd combination, so I probed his brain a little bit on what that was all about. Ultimately, I decided that I wanted to enter law school and pursue patent law, partly because of the specialized requirements, but also because I saw it as an opportunity to use my engineering background while also learning about the law.

After I took the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT), I got offers of admission from several law schools around the state including the University of Texas, Baylor University, the University Oǖ *OUSTON CNF Oǖ EOURSG 6GXCS 6GEI 6GEI WCS TIG ǛRST SEIOOL TO OǗGR MG C SGCT CNF ON MY CFMúSSúONS LGTTGR TIGRG WCS C PGRsonalized note from the assistant dean of admissions, Stephen Perez, another Aggie who attended Texas Tech School of Law. In the note, he congratulated me on my acceptance and promised me that, even though I was an Aggie, if I chose Tech, I would be WGLEOMGF WúTI OPGN CRMS 6ICT ǛRST úMPRGSSúON Oǖ 6GEI úS WICT started the ball rolling for my decision to come to Lubbock.

My grandparents live near Tahoka, Texas, so the panhandle wasn’t a stranger to me. I have known for a very long time— probably since I was a toddler—that people in West Texas are just friendly, good old-fashioned country folks. When I came to visit Tech, that opinion was just reinforced even more. I visited the law school on the Friday before Spring Break and, even though many of the students had already left for the next week, I received a one-on-one tour with a student and met countless faculty members. Everyone I met was eager to say hello and went out of their way to make me feel welcome. I visited several other schools and never felt like I did at Tech. When I visited Tech, I genuinely felt like the people I met wanted me to be there.

What is the best experience you’ve had at Texas Tech? The best experience I have had while attending Texas Tech has been the opportunity to study abroad. In the spring of 2010 I studied abroad in Seville, Spain. Without Texas Tech providing this opportunity by having a campus in Seville, it wouldn’t have been possible. I was able to take courses that transferred directly back to Tech while in 5PCúN CNF FúFN�T CǗGET MY FGHRGG PCTI CT CLL 9ICT CN CMCZúNH experience that I will never forget!

What is your favorite weather season in Lubbock and why? Late spring and fall. The weather is perfect in the late spring, but there’s no football. So, fall is the best season! It’s so much fun to walk to a Tech football game among thousands of other students, and walking on campus during the fall is gorgeous.

What do you love best about the Tech campus? I love the architecture of

I have my own desk, refrigerator, comfortable chair, locker and noise-canceling headphones. Outside of campus would have to be the city library on Slide Road. I like to go there because it’s usually empty and free of Tech students.

Which Texas Tech tradition do you like the most? My favorite Tech tradition is the Masked Rider. I love watching the Masked Rider lead the football team out of the tunnel. The sight of that is quite majestic.

What is your preferred form of communication with friends? My preferred form of communication is in person. I like to use gestures and facial expressions to make my point and convince people. I also like to text because it’s fast and there’s no spell check.

What do you love best about the Tech campus? I like the uniformity of the buildings. It’s clean and there’s plenty of greenery around campus. Memorial Circle is also an uplifting place to walk through.

What’s your favorite nightspot? My favorite nightspot has to be my bed!

I don’t get much sleep due to my major so I sleep every chance I get.

I did look at a couple of other universities, but I knew I would get the best education at Texas Tech while being able to stay close to the people I loved.

Perez Joins Lady Raider Tennis Coaching Staff Abilene Native Named Women’s Tennis Associate Head Coach

three-time recipient of the ITA’s Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year, has been named Texas Tech’s new women’s tennis associate head coach, announced head coach Todd Petty on Tuesday. “We are very excited to have Hayden join our program,â€? said Petty. “He is a proven winner and will bring a lot of excitement and energy to our program. Texas Tech Tennis is very fortunate to be adding one of the DRĂşHITGST EOCEIGS ĂşN EOLLGHG TGNNĂşS TO OUR STCÇ— ÂŽ Perez replaces Todd Chapman, whose position became available when he was named head coach at the University of Kansas in June.

A native of Abilene, Perez comes to Texas Tech from Nebraska, where he served as associate head coach. He helped lead the Cornhuskers to the 2013 Big Ten regular season title and a No. 16 national ranking. During his eight seasons with the program, the Huskers went an impressive 152-58.

Perez has been honored as the ITA Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year while at Nebraska in 2007, 2010 and 2012. He has helped the Huskers climb in the national rankings from 56 in 2009 to an impressive 16th to conH AY DEN PE R E Z , A

Perez also served stints at Wyoming and Air Force and was the Director of Player Development for the Intermountain Section of the United States Tennis Association in Denver, Colo., where he was responsible for all aspects of junior competition including rankings, endorsement opportunities and scheduling.

As a player, Perez earned MVP honors twice CNF CFVCNEGF TO TIG ǛNCLS Oǖ TIG /úFWGST 4GHúON Championships in 1996 while playing at Cameron University. He was ranked as high as No. 17 in sinHLGS CNF GCRNGF C TOP ǛVG NCTúONCL RCNKúNH úN /GN�S Open Doubles by the U.S. Tennis Association.

Maines earned her undergraduate degree in exercise and sport science from Tech in 1998 and then completed her masters in sports administration in 2001.

Corkery’s squad recorded a 54-11 record during his tenure at Stephen F. Austin.

From 1996 to 1999, as head coach at Howard College (Texas), he led the Lady Hawks to three top 10 rankings in the National Junior College Athletic Association polls and an overall record of 90-12. A 1979 graduate of Texas Tech, Mark and his wife Jennifer are the parents of Luke and Abbie. Luke is junior guard on the Red Raider basketball team, who has lettered for the past two seasons.

Additionally, he averaged 3.1 points, 1.2 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game with the New York Knicks in 1982-83 after being selected by the team in the second round (33rd overall) of the 1982 NBA Draft. Taylor was traded to the Indiana Pacers in 1983-84 before beginning his European career in 1984, initially in Italy (1984-86), then moving to (RCNEG CNF ǛNúSIúNH IúS ECRGGR in Belgium (1992-97).

A standout guard at Duke University, Taylor earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference and honorable mention AllAmerica honors as a senior (1981-82) by averaging 20.3 points per game, a number that led the ACC. During Taylor’s collegiate career, the Blue Devils won the 1979 ACC regular season championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament twice (1979 and 1980) and National Invitational Tournament once (1981).

A 1982 graduate of Duke with a bachelor’s degree in economics, Taylor was named to the President’s List at Duke his senior year.

Sixty college students, having just completed their junior year at Texas Tech, spent the summer of 1965 at Texas Tech training for service in the Peace Corps. More than half of them became volunteers in Ecuador. Last May, more than a dozen of them returned to Lubbock for a reunion.

I received my master’s in animal and food science in 2004.

What is your favorite movie? “Gone With the Wind.� It’s an all-time classic around our house.

What are your interests and hobbies? Spending time as a family and traveling back to Texas so my daughters know where they are from—Texas.

When they were born we had soil from Lubbock and Pearland under the delivery table in the hospital. Even though we are living in D.C., both girls were born over Texas soil!

MILITARY 2nd Lt. DARRYN DEEN ANDREWS was killed in action Sept. 4, 2009, after his U.S. Army unit was ambushed in Afghanistan. He was a member of the 1st Battalion, 501st Parachute Regiment.

This year, he became only the ninth person to be honored with the Texas Legislative Medal of Honor. The honor is the highest public recognition for valor awarded by the State of Texas.

BOOKS 1943 FISKE HANLEY II (BS Mechanical

Engineering) Fort Worth, Texas, recently published a book titled “Accused American War Criminal.â€? The book is DCSGF ON (ĂşSKGÂ?S TĂşMG CS C $ Ç?ĂşHIT GNgineer. In the book, Fiske describes his experience as an accused American war criminal after his plane was shot down over Japan. Fiske is now in his nineties and is one of the oldest living alumni of Texas Tech University.

1961 BERNAY SHEFFIELD (BBA Management) San Angelo, Texas, was recently elected president of the Texas Restaurant Association. Bernay has been a member of the Texas Restaurant Association since 1976 and has served as president of the San Angelo chapter and as chair of the TRA Education Foundation. He CNF IĂşS WĂşÇ&#x2013;G $GTTY <GNTNGR 5IGÇ&#x2DC;GLF own and manage the 750-seat Zentnerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Daughter Steakhouse, an iconic restaurant in West Texas that carries on the proud tradition started by Bettyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s father, John, more than 70 years ago.

Engineering) Anchorage, Alaska, and his wife, Carla, were honored by the United Way of Anchorage with the Tocqueville Community Service award for 2012. The award is given annually to the family or individual who best epitomizes exemplary philanthropic leadership and outstanding service to the community. David and Carla have been active with United Way since 2001 and David joined the Board in 2013. They were also honored by the University of Alaska Anchorage with a Meritorious Service Award from the University of Alaska Board of Regents.

Meat Science Academic Quiz Bowl Team earned the title of National Champions at the 66th Reciprocal Meat Conference (RMC) June 16-19 in Auburn, Ala. 6IG 4GF 4CĂşFGRS GNTGRGF TWO TGCMS TICT MGT IGCF TO IGCF ĂşN TIG Ç&#x203A;NCL ROUNF Ç&#x203A;NĂşSIĂşNH Ç&#x203A;RST CNF SGEONF 6IGY FOMĂşNCTGF OTIGR TGCMS TICT RGPresented the top meat science programs at universities from 16 states. Texas Tech won the competition in 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2010.

Team members included TANNER ADAMS , a senior; BRITTANY BLUM , a junior; TAELAR CHILDERS , a junior; BO HUTTO , a senior; MALLORY JONES , a junior; MANDY-JO LAURENT , a May graduate; KASSANDRA OGNOSKIE , a junior; HEATHER RODE , a senior; and CHRISTY WOERNER , a junior.

Meanwhile, four Texas Tech students were honored for outstanding academic achievement and leadership in the meat science industry. Hutto and Adams both received American Meat Science Association Scholastic Achievement Awards. Honorary mention was given to Rode and DAKOTAH WILLIAMS .

Separately, products from each represented university were featured at a Taste of the Reciprocal Meat Conference Contest. Texas Tech received a Peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Choice Award for its Pork Wellington Bites, which were developed

by Hutto, Adams, Rode, Williams, TREVOR KING , JENNIFER MARTIN and HENRY RUIZ .

They were then asked to develop a product using the secret ingredient. Ruizâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s team developed the â&#x20AC;&#x2122;Bama Slamma,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; a pulled pork slider on donut buns.
