Dear Jennifer, Nice job on the Kliff Kingsbury article in the latest Techsan. I had no idea that you were from New Braunfels, but when you mentioned that, it brought back a flood of memories for me: the Kingsburys, Jim Streety, even John Turman. Boerne always looked to NB as a role model for successful programs.

Again, well done on the article. If Kliff can do for Michael Brewer what he did for Johnny Manziel and Case Keenum, exciting times are ahead.

New Beginnings

Congratulations to Chancellor Hance and to Dr. Kelly Overley Cronin, the system’s vice chancellor for institutional advancement and her staff.

Kelly and her staff worked tirelessly on this campaign and the results speak for themselves.

Most of all, thanks to the donors who made it all possible.

I n Decembe r , Ath l etics Di r ector Kirby Hocutt hired Kliff Kingsbury to be our new head football coach. Kliff quickly assembled a very young staff, many of whom played for the Red Raiders.

The general consensus is that this group did a great job of recruiting considering the fact that they started several months late. While the recruiting ratings groups put our class near the bottom of the Big 12, I would point out that these groups have put Kansas State near the bottom the last few years as well.

It is a little bit like SAT and ACT scores. They don’t measure motivation and heart—what is inside an individual. They also don’t measure the impact that coaches can have on these recruits. My guess is we have a very good class that these young coaches will motivate to great things.

September is only months away.

Nellis I t wou l d be an understatement to say that 2013 has been very positive for Texas Tech University thus far.

On March 1, M. Duane Nellis, Ph.D., was named as the sole finalist for the president’s position. He most recently served as president at the University of Idaho. Prior to that, he served as provost and senior vice president at Kansas State University and dean of the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West Virginia University.

He was announced as the president of Texas Tech University on March 22.

O n Feb. 8, Chancellor Kent Hance told a crowded news conference that the Texas Tech Vision & Tradition campaign had reached its goal of $1 billion a year early.

He pointed out that the Tech System now joins a group of fewer than 70 universities that have raised $1 billion in donations and endowments. The campaign had contributions from all 50 state and 39 countries with 120,000 alumni, faculty, staff and friends.

P r ior to the Tech-TCU basketball game in Fort Worth on Jan. 8, a group of players who put Texas Tech basketball on the map in the early 1960s held a reunion and met with Joe Parker, deputy athletics director and Head Coach Chris Walker.

This group has held four reunions—two in Dallas and one in Lubbock when the United Spirit Arena was opened. The Fort Worth reunion, attended by 35 former players and their wives, was the fourth.

Back in those days, the Lubbock Municipal Coliseum was packed for every Tech home game. There was a long list of people wanting to purchase season tickets. Some games were even shown in the Lubbock Municipal Auditorium next door via closed circuit TV to accommodate overflow crowds.

This group was responsible for a Southwest Conference championship in 1960-61 and a co-championship in 1961-62.

The team members at the reunion included Trenton Bonner ’68, La Jolla, Calif.; Harold Denney ’65, Dallas; Joe Fox ’65, Dallas; Bobby Gindorf ’64, London, Ky.; Mike Gooden ’65, Dallas; Roger Henning ’63, Mathis; Harold Hudgens ’67, Ballinger; Dub Malaise ’66, Dallas; Milton Mickey ’63, Seguin,Wash.; Del Ray Mounts ’62, Garden City, Kan.; Dave Olsen ’67, Almagordo, N.M.; David Patty ’69, Paris (Manager); Tom Patty ’64, Weatherford; Mac Percival ’63, Houston; Norman Reuther ’66, Decatur; Charlie Steinman ’64, Geneseo, Ill. The 1960-61 team was the last one coached by Polk Robison, who had been the basketball coach from 1942 to 1946 and 1947 to 1961. He stepped down to become athletics director. Robison compiled a 254-195 record and won two conference championships, one co-championship and earned an NCAA tournament bid, the first ever for the Red Raiders. They advanced that year to the Sweet 16 before losing to Cincinnati. They finished ranked 18th in the country.

The 1961-62 team was the first season for Gene Gibson, who had been an assistant to Robison. That team also advanced to the Sweet 16 before losing to Colorado.

Those were the days!

Ron Dam ron ’64, former associate athletics director who passed away on Jan. 7, had a very difficult job at Texas Tech. I say that because his job required him to say “no” to a lot of people.

He served Tech athletics for 33 years as game administrator for football and men’s basketball. At one time, he also coordinated team travel for football, bowl games and post-season basketball. He was a two-year tennis letterman for Tech and became men’s tennis coach in 1980-81, a position he held for 12 years.

He first moved into athletic administration as an administrative assistant overseeing the athletic facilities in 1982-83.

Being game administrator means coordinating activities of the band, the cheerleaders, the pom squad, the Masked Rider, the Saddle Tramps, the police and anyone who has a pass to be on the sidelines.

Sound easy to you?

Blayne Beal, associate athletics director, posted a remembrance of Ron shortly after his death. He described Ron as “one of the hardest working men I have ever known.” ”If you have attended a Texas Tech sporting event in the last 30 years, the behind the scenes work was the mastermind of Ron and his staff,” Beal continues. “Ron took the safety and well being of fans and teams to heart, and in this day and age, that made everyone associated with Texas Tech athletics feel at ease knowing that he was in control.”

I first knew Ron when he was playing American Legion City League baseball in Lubbock at the age of 16. His first love was obviously tennis. He was on the tennis team at Lubbock High School and later at Tech.

He had retired last spring to spend more time with his family.

It is a shame that he had so little time left to do that.

Texas Tech University’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources honored seven distinguished alumni on Feb. 18 at the McKenzie Merket Alumni Center.

The Distinguished & Young Alumni Awards honored alumni who have made significant contributions to society, and whose accomplishments and careers have brought distinction to the college and to professions associated with agriculture and natural resources. The honorees were Kristina H. Butts; Mike Gibson; Stan Ray; Monica Hightower; David Fisher; Carlton Britton and James Graham.

Alumna Award. She is currently the executive director of legislative affairs with the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association.

The recipients of this year’s Distinguished Alumni Awards were: Mike Gibson ’83 of Paducah, former general manager of the

NEWS Texas Tech, the Lubbock Independent School District and multiple community partners recently received a Department of Education Grant. The U.S. Department of Education recently announced $60 million in 2012 Promise Neighborhoods grants. As one of seven implementation grantees, East Lubbock Promise Neighborhood consortium will receive $24.5 million during the next five years.

East Lubbock Promise Neighborhood is a collaboration of the Lubbock Independent School District, Texas Tech University, the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and multiple community partners including Covenant Health System, South Plains Food Bank, United Supermarkets and United Way of Lubbock.

Promise Neighborhoods, first launched in 2010, is a communityfocused program that funds local-led efforts to improve educational opportunities and provide comprehensive health, safety and support services in high-poverty neighborhoods.

Texas Tech University School of Law landed in the top 10 of two newly created rankings released in National Jurist magazine’s Best Law Schools 2013.

Texas Tech Law placed No. 9 in overall quality and No. 2 for student satisfaction in what the magazine described as “a new law school ranking focused on what students find most important.”

Graded on nine criteria assessing postgraduate success, quality of teaching and cost-efficiency, Texas Tech received a final GPA of 3.38 out of 4.0, placing ninth among 157 law schools with a 2.0 GPA or higher.

Measured by student satisfaction based on professor quality, Texas Tech ranked second in the nation.

Lubbock Lake National Historic Landmark was named one of the top five destinations to see evidence of first Americans by Smithsonian.com.

Texas Tech set another spring enrollment record with preliminary spring totals topping the 30,000 mark. The total as of the 12th day of classes was 30,399 students, which is ahead of last spring’s record total of 30,102.

The growth in enrollment reflects the university’s commitment to increasing enrollment with quality students and retaining those already enrolled. On the rise over the last decade with more than 27 percent growth, enrollment at the university is on course to reach an institutional goal of 40,000 by 2020.

The overall spring total marks the largest spring enrollment since the university opened its doors in 1925 and the fourth largest semester total overall.

The story featured by Smithsonian.com covers locations across the United States where visitors can see the cultural remnants and animal remains left by the original settlers of this continent. It mentions the exhibits at Lubbock Lake Landmark, such as the hiking trails and the interpretive center that displays the evolution of the site from a fast-moving streambed to a marsh and documents the peoples who lived at the site.

Lubbock Lake Landmark is a unit of the Museum of Texas Tech University and is an archaeological and natural history preserve at the northern edge of the city of Lubbock. The Landmark contains evidence of almost 12,000 years of occupation by ancient people on the Southern High Plains.

Texas Tech University entered an academic collaboration agreement with Iraq’s Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research to pave the way for students and faculty from Iraq to attend Texas Tech.

The agreement includes incentives for doctoral students with high qualifications to complete their degree at Texas Tech and return to Iraqi institutions to improve their curricula in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines.

Texas Tech University has agreed to pay for four highly qualified doctoral candidates in STEM disciplines to get a degree at Texas Tech. These candidates also receive a $20,400 stipend in addition to the fees and tuition.

The Iraqi government will pay for four-week training workshops for Iraqi professors that will explore principles of teaching and learning as well as how to create a positive learning environment. It also will pay for a faculty development leave for visiting professors from Iraq to research and teach while at Texas Tech.

This longer visiting professors program has a goal of inviting up to five professors with more possible during the next three years — from 2013 to 2016.

Finally, Iraq will pay to help doctoral students already working on their dissertations but in need of assistance with some critical technology or analytical tools unavailable in their country to come to Texas Tech for a one-to six-month period and finish their degrees. The students’ faculty advisers also will accompany these students.

Stocker cattle An agricultural economics research team is ready to unveil a new analysis tool for cattle producers.

The online tool, developed in a partnership among Texas Tech University, Mississippi State University and the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Risk Management Agency, will assist stocker cattle producers in evaluating decisions on their cattle.

Texas, Kansas and Oklahoma generate roughly 3 million stocker cattle annually. Stocker cattle also are produced throughout the Southeastern United States. They are young, lightweight animals that are pastured on winter wheat or other cool season annual forages to increase their weight by 300 or more pounds before they are placed in feedlots for finishing.

The online tool can be used to evaluate profitability and risk for different types and weights of cattle; wheat production versus graze out; and purchase of alternative wheat insurance products including: yield protection, revenue protection, and revenue protection with harvest price exclusion.

Other options include the purchase of Livestock Risk Protection on stocker cattle and choice among farm program options. Pricing options for both stocker cattle and wheat include cash pricing, forward contracting, or futures hedging.

A new microfilm scanner will provide digitalization of Texas newspapers and more at Texas Tech University Libraries. A $53,000 gift from the

Hoblitzelle Foundation has secured a Mekel Mach IIIQ scanner, which will lead to access of non-restricted content via the Internet.

The purchase expands upon resources in development for the past eight years. Until now, the collection was comprised mostly of books, including theses and dissertations.

Digitization also has added benefits such as preservation of time and resources.

Texas Tech University celebrated its 90th anniversary Feb. 10. Texas Senate Bill No. 103, Texas Technological College’s charter, was passed Feb. 10, 1923 and signed by Gov. Pat M. Neff to establish a Texas state college in West Texas.

When the bill was passed, the university existed on paper, but the physical location of the school had not yet been determined. Lubbock was chosen as the future site of Texas Technological College in August 1923 with the help of Texas State Senator William H. Bledsoe, who authored Senate Bill 103 and called Lubbock home.

The cornerstone of the Administration Building was laid Nov. 11, 1924. Five schools began classes in the fall of 1925, including Agriculture, Arts & Sciences, Engineering, Home Economics and Music.

The College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources is planning a study abroad trip to China. The 15-day tour of China will take

place during the Maymester session.

Students will have the opportunity to travel to northern and eastern China by minibus, charter bus, plane and even camel.

Students will begin their trip in Shanghai and then travel inland to visit Chinese agricultural universities and view agricultural sites that range from university research to current, common farming practices. The trip will conclude with a stop in Beijing and the opportunity to visit many historic sites such as the Wall of China, the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven and the Summer Palace.

hether you enjoy traveling on your own, with friends and family or with a large group of people, trips sponsored by the Texas Tech Alumni Association are a great way to see the world. Traveling Techsans trips for 2013 include Europe, the British Isles, China, Alaska and a Mississippi River cruise. Most of the trips are cruises, but there are some land packages as well.

Jim Douglass, associate vice president of the Texas Tech Alumni Association, heads the travel program, which he started nearly 30 years ago. He notes that while the program started out with five or six trips each year, this year, the list has expanded to 19 trips.

“Right now, I’m finalizing the trips for 2014,” he says. “The travel companies will have a whole laundry list of trips for us to choose from with different lengths, different prices, different cruise ships and destinations. I try to find something that fits our audience. Our audience, as a rule, is more of a seven to 10-day trip group.

“I try to hone it down to where maybe one year we offer an Alaskan cruise and then skip a year and offer it the year after that. I choose the trips ultimately, but I get a lot of good feedback from the travel companies.”

He adds that while each trip is filled with fun and interesting excursions and opportunities for travelers, what they choose to do is up to the guests themselves. Many people enjoy staying with a group the entire time, while others may choose to take an excursion just with a significant other.

Douglass says he often gets the question why the association doesn’t hire local agencies, and explains that local agencies just can’t compete.

“We deal with large travel companies that work with lots of alumni associations,” he says. “We’re sponsoring a cruise or some sort of land package, but we’re not the only school that’s on the trip. We may be partnering with the University of Delaware, USC, Brigham Young and Tulane all on the same trip. We sell to our constituencies, and those people go on the trip. There’s no way we would fill up a ship by ourselves; that takes thousands of people. I’ve honed it down to four or five companies that I feel good about.

“I know they do quality work and are responsive to their customers, are reputable and have a good track record, so we stick with them.”

Douglass says that while the travel program is only one aspect of his job, he would love to see it grow in the future to where it required at least one full-time employee to manage it. He says that some larger schools actually have two or three full-time employees for their travel programs.

One really enjoyable aspect of the Alumni Association trips that is quite a draw is having celebrity hosts. Marsha Sharp, former Lady Raiders head coach, was the first celebrity host for the travel program, and since that trip, she has been on at least 10 trips with the Traveling Techsans.

“It’s been a great opportunity for me to see the world with Red Raiders,” Sharp says. “I’ve been very grateful to the Alumni Association. I have been on the Baltic Sea, Mediterranean, Alaskan, East Coast, British Isles cruises and the Passion Play and river cruise down the Danube. My No. 1 trip was the Alaskan cruise, with No. 2 being the British Isles, which finished at Normandy.”

In her role as host, Sharp helps with a reception prior to the cruise and then on the first day of the cruise so people can meet and become acquainted. She mingles with guests and makes sure they know which on-shore excursions she is taking, in case they want to join her.

“Any time you travel with a group, it is a lot of fun,” Sharp says.

“If you have a common interest—such as Texas Tech—it’s always fun to get back together at the end of the day to eat together and share experiences. Of course, we always talk Tech sports.

“Plus, cruising is great because you can see so much without moving your bags,” she says.

Sharp isn’t the only traveler who has made more than one trip with the program. Repeat travelers actually are more the norm than the exception when it comes to Traveling Techsans.

“I thoroughly enjoyed each cruise, and each one was very different. The British Isles one was kind of like ‘going home’ for me since my family and I lived in England back in late 1970’s.

Not only did I have a wonderful cruise, but I also had an opportunity to re-visit the places I loved back then. We visited so many different ports and had incredible tours offered in each.

The planning on all the cruises has been so well done. Every aspect is great. Marsha Sharp was a wonderful host on both the British Isles trip and the River Cruise to the Passion Play.

“The River Cruise was unique in that it was on a much smaller ‘vessel’ and truly everyone knew everyone because we were a small group and all the folks were so friendly. There were folks there from other universities, which was great as we met and got to know folks from totally different areas. A highlight for me, in addition to the Passion Play itself of course, was passing through the locks along the way. We got to watch ‘close up and personal’ several times as the crew negotiated the lock.”

Seasoned cruisers Jerry ’68 and Barbara Donahoo ’66, who live in Bluffton, Texas, just went on their 12th cruise, one hosted by the Texas Tech Alumni Association. They already are planning their next cruise with the Alumni Association—to the Greek Isles in 2014.

“Jerry and I went on the Mediterranean cruise with Coach Tommy Tuberville and 70 something other Red Raiders,” Barbara says. “What a trip! We went a day early to enjoy Lisbon, Portugal, and stayed an extra day after debarkation in Rome. Everything was handled for us by the travel agency, and we had no problems. The best thing about the whole trip, though, was being with our fellow Red Raiders. We often had a whole bus full of Raiders on some of the tours.”

Because of the number of passengers on these trips, there are great discounts. Douglass emphasizes that booking early is the key to getting the best rate and other possible perks, such as free airfare.

He is quick to dispel the notion that he goes on every single trip.

“My name is on all the brochures, and people say, ‘Gosh, I wish I had your job—you get to go on all these trips.’ I say, ‘I wish I could, too.’ Every two years, if we get a trip that has enough response from our alums, they’ll throw in a comp for me to go because they want me to keep doing business with them and want me to know first-hand their products so when I’m talking to somebody about it, I can say, ‘This line is great, this particular ship is wonderful, this destination is great.’ I pay for my spouse or kids. But only if we have enough people signing up for the trip do we earn that type of thing. It doesn’t happen all that often.”

As someone who loves to see the world, Douglass, too, has his favorite voyages. He says that years ago, he went on a two-week Scandinavian/Russian cruise that started and ended in London.

He said the trip took the group through Gdansk, Poland, and on to Lubeck, Germany, just weeks before the fall of the Berlin Wall. They ventured on to the four Scandinavian capitals and to Amsterdam before heading back to London, where he stayed an extra three days on his own.

“One year, Marsha Sharp hosted a trip to the Passion Play at Oberammergau, Germany,” he says. “They only have that every 10 years. We did a trip to the Alps leading up to being in Germany.

We did the Swiss, French, German and Italian Alps and then went to Oberammergau for the play. That was a wonderful, wonderful trip. Those were two trips that were a pure joy.”

It was a chance viewing of an MTV video that introduced one Red Raider to what would ultimately encompass his passion, pastime and livelihood.

“I started playing guitar in the 5th grade,” says Alex Weeden ’94.

“MTV had just come out. I saw Ted Nugent one day and I said, ‘I want to play guitar.’ Dad took me to the store and bought me a cheap guitar. That’s how I got started.”

Weeden parlayed that “cheap guitar” into a fantastic career.

Today he’s the lead guitar player for the outrageously popular, multi-platinum country singer-songwriter Miranda Lambert.

And now he’s famous for his guitar-playing, appearing in legendary venues nationwide with Lambert’s “Locked and Reloaded” tour, and on close to 100 television shows and counting. Weeden was seen most recently on the Grammys in February and Academy of Country Music awards show in April.

In a span of 10 years, Weeden went from playing in bars in West Texas to touring with platinum recording artist Miranda Lambert.

His key to success? “Never get discouraged.”

Weeden’s rise to success wasn’t meteoric. He began taking 30-minute lessons once a week when he was 10. He took lessons for several years, but most of his skill came from practice and a simple affinity for music.

“I think the key to success is to not force it,” says Weeden.

“As a kid I suppose I practiced a bit. I just kind of always had a guitar in my hands. I always loved to play, so I never really even thought of it as practice.”

Weeden, a Fort Worth, Texas, native, attended Arlington Heights High School. When it came time to apply for college, he selected Texas Tech because that’s where most of his friends were going.

“I didn’t apply to any other schools,” Weeden says of his selection of Texas Tech, where he earned a degree in restaurant, hotel and institutional management. “I had never even visited Lubbock. My first time there was when I started college and moved into my dorm—Weymouth. I made so many friends during my days at Tech. I still keep up with most of them.”

One of those friends is Chris Thomas ’95. Thomas, who lives in Kansas City, Mo., is vice president of global partnerships for AEG Live, an entertainment company that owns more than 100 event facilities, such as the Sprint Center in Kansas City and the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles.

“Alex and I both lived in Weymouth,” says Thomas, who grew up in Katy, Texas. “I lived on another floor, but some of my good friends from home were his neighbors. That’s how we met.”

The two shared an appreciation of music. They became fast friends and eventually began performing together in local venues with Thomas on vocals and Weeden on guitar.

Lubbock is no stranger to burgeoning musicians, and Weeden found the city to be an ideal place to perfect his art. Prior to attending Tech, his public performances had been limited.

“The first place I played for paying customers was during college,” Weeden recalls. “It was at a place called ‘On Broadway.’

Fittingly enough, it was on Broadway (Avenue) just east of University (Avenue.)”

Though Weeden was brought up in Cow Town, his music tastes leaned toward classic rock-n-roll. Some of his favorites were, and still are, David Bowie, The Beatles, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin.

Weeden and his wife have two children, a daughter, Indie, and a son, Xander, whom Weeden is holding.

And even though Weeden is a guitar aficionado now, that first thrifty electric guitar (pictured at left) still holds a spot in his heart. As a nod to his humble musical roots, he kept the instrument and displays it in a select space: his 4-year old daughter, Indie’s, bedroom, where it hangs on the wall.

“I own 30 guitars,” Weeden says. “I have an endorsement deal with Gibson, and they’ve given me eight very nice guitars. I take six or seven on the road with me, and the rest are hanging on the walls in my house.”

“I never paid much attention to country music until a couple of my neighbors in the dorm, who were from Odessa, introduced me to (the music of) Keith Whitley and George Strait,” he says.

This country music exposure broadened Weeden’s musical horizons, and obviously helped prep him for his post-college musical career.

“He was a rocker,” says Thomas of Weeden. “As we went through college, he gained an appreciation for Texas music.”

Weeden never doubted he’d earn his college degree, but his post-matriculation plans didn’t include using that degree.

“Toward the end of college I decided to make music my career and I moved to Austin,” he says. “When it came to playing guitar, I kept going and I didn’t get discouraged. I waited tables six or seven years before I started making a decent living in music. I knew I had my degree to fall back on, and I had also gotten my real estate license, just in case.”

Weeden’s 1996 arrival at the Capitol City occurred at a fortuitous time. The ’90s saw the rise of Texas Country—a music genre that takes bits and pieces from numerous musical styles and blends them into a sound that plays by its own rules. It’s not country, it’s not rock, but it is all Texas.

Lone Stars like Robert Earl Keen, Jack Ingram and Texas Tech’s own Pat Green were setting the Texas music industry on fire, and Weeden managed to land smack-dab in the middle of it all. He played in numerous bands, released an album in 2001 entitled “WEEdEN-ORANGE WHIP?,” and formed his own band, Choker Montana.

When your hobby is also your livelihood, the two spill over into every facet of life. “When I'm at home, it's the same kind of thing as when I was a kid, except now there's a guitar in every room of the house, so I almost always pick one up,” says Weeden.

“It drives my wife crazy! I find that, for me, the best practice is to just watch television and noodle around—pick out melodies of commercials, tune out, write…for me, just holding a guitar and noodling around is a great way to keep things moving.”

“Three months after my album was released, I received an offer to play with Honeybrowne,” Weeden says. “I played with them three years.”

It was while Weeden was touring with Honeybrowne that he met Miranda Lambert.

“She (Lambert) was opening for Honeybrowne in Corpus (Christi),” recalls Weeden. “She had also opened for us in Houston. Her dad was at the show and gave me a CD and said, ‘If you or anyone you know wants to play for this band, let me know.’ Not too long after that I saw her on Jay Leno. A month after that I got a call from her manager.”

He began touring with Lambert in 2005, the same year Lambert’s first album, “Kerosene,” debuted. Lambert and her band have experienced a swift and spectacular rise to the top. With hit after hit, the band’s platinum success has created a massive fan base. Her music is a fusion of rock and country that couldn’t be pulled off without a stellar electric guitar player.

in Colorado and New York City’s Madison Square Garden, to name a few. He has performed with Lambert at the Grammys the last two years—both performances rank high on his list of favorites.

Weeden, who is married with two children, still lives in Austin. He plays about 75 shows a year, and uses Austin as his jumping-off point. He maintains a love for life on the road.

“It’s a blast,” he says. “We’re family out there.

After eight years, I feel like it’s still in the honeymoon phase.”

As for his boss, Weeden says Lambert is, “Hands down, the sweetest, coolest person I know. She’s the greatest. We (the band) go to dinner together, we even go camping. We’re all really close.”

What’s refreshing about Weeden is how down-to-earth he is.

There’s not a hint of arrogance. His best friend Thomas jokingly calls him a “big kid,” which is an apt description for a grown man who gets to play for a living.

Weeden says knows he’s a lucky man, and that it’s a rare thing to make a living from his favorite pastime.

“I count my blessings daily. I don’t take for granted one second.”

There are so many dynamics of Texas Tech’s growth, it’s hard to keep up. New buildings on campus, student enrollment increases, completed steps toward Tier One status and a recent successful $1 billion Vision & Tradition capital campaign. Details can be hard to locate.

Texas Tech’s Office of Institutional Research compiles detailed data related to the student body. From how many prospective students apply, to how many are accepted, to how many actually enroll—plus demographics, SAT and ACT scores and student majors. The stats are mind-boggling. I went through these graphs and pulled some I thought would appeal to the vast majority of alumni.

This puts into focus some interesting facts about Tech’s ever-growing and ever-changing student body.

Though his registered name is a bit dramatic—Hollywood at Dusk—the horse behind the name is no such thing.

“He’s got a great personality,” says former owner Blaine Barnes, a rancher and farrier from Tulia, Texas. “He’s like a pet dog, he just wants to follow you around and be your buddy.”

He’s not really called Hollywood at Dusk, either. Until he is christened with his new name, which will be more fitting for his public persona as Texas Tech’s new Masked Rider horse, he still goes by “Woody.”

Barnes says last fall he was working cattle on Woody with former Masked Rider Perry Church ’83 when Church told him, “You know, Tech is looking for a new Masked Rider horse. You ought to contact them about Woody.”

“I never thought it would happen,” says Barnes. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime shot to sell a horse to a place like Texas Tech as the mascot. I’m excited they chose him.”

Barnes said he watched, from home, Woody’s debut Dec. 28 in Houston’s nationally televised Meineke Car Care Bowl.

“They had their priorities out of whack, though. They showed way more football than they did the horse,” he said with a laugh.

The selection process for the mascot goes much deeper than the horse’s coloring. Yes, the animal must be black, but he must exhibit many other positive characteristics as well, says Sam Jackson, Ph.D., an associate professor in the Department of Animal & Food Sciences in the College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources. Jackson has been a member of the Masked Rider Advisory Committee since 1997. Currently, he is co-chair and has authority over all horse-related aspects of the program.

He hails from a family that boasts a long history with the equine species, starting way back in the 1800s. He has been involved in every aspect of horsemanship: training, showing, roping, riding and raising them. When it comes to horse sense, Jackson has it in spades. He was a member of Texas Tech’s horse judging team while an undergrad in 1984 and coached the team in 2002. Jackson received his bachelor’s in animal production in 1986 from Tech, his master’s in physiology of reproduction in 1988 from Texas A&M University, and his doctorate in animal science in 1993 from Tech.

For Jackson, choosing a worthy replacement for Midnight Matador was personal, because he is an equestrian, but also because he is an alumnus.

“I feel it’s a great responsibility that has been entrusted to me by Texas Tech,” Jackson comments. “I feel great pride and fulfillment every time the horse runs and makes an appearance with the Masked Rider. I still get chills and a lump in my throat on game day when the horse leads the team onto the field.”

Jackson says he tested 10 horses, and looked at many more videos and photos. But he had a good feeling about Woody, who was being used as a good old-fashioned cow horse. Prior to his selection as the Masked Rider horse, the most attention Woody got was from Barnes’ two sons, ages 6 and 3.

The all-black horse —there’s not a white hair on him—went from a life of quiet anonymity, where he roamed the ranch and spent his days chasing cattle and grazing, to a quasi-celebrity lifestyle. He now lives indoors at all times, where he relaxes in a cozy extra large stall and meanders around an indoor arena at night. Sleek and pampered, he’s tenderly groomed daily and receives a bath prior to every public appearance.

...if there’s one thing that makes a Red Raider’s heart go pitter-patter, it’s watching the Masked Rider thunder across the football field on a stunning black horse.

Out To Pasture

Where does a Masked Rider horse go when he retires?

In the case of Midnight Matador, 43rd Masked Rider Stacy Stockard Moncibaiz took him in.

“Midnight Matador has been a special horse not just to the Masked Rider, but also to the committee members,” says Moncibaiz, who earned a bachelor’s in agricultural communications in 2005, a master’s in agricultural education in 2006 and her law degree in 2009. “I love him so much and I’m so proud to be his new owner. It’s an honor to have been selected as his new owner.”

Moncibaiz, who served as Masked Rider from 2004-2005, lives in Lubbock and is a member of the Masked Rider Advisory Committee. In order to take over ownership of Midnight Matador, she went through a vetting process against others who wanted the horse. The Masked Rider Advisory Committee chose Moncibaiz because they liked the care plan she proposed.

Right now, Moncibaiz says the former mascot is mostly resting his injured leg, which was the cause of his retirement. Whether or not the horse will ever be ridden in any kind of competitive events remains to be seen.

“I still ride him, we’re waiting to see what he wants to do,” she says with a smile.

Midnight Matador served 10 seasons and 11 riders, the longest-serving mascot in the program’s history. He was the 13th horse to represent the Masked Rider program. He was selected in 2002 and purchased from Hoggett Ranches in Bluff Dale, Texas. He was a three-year old when he began his role as Texas Tech’s mascot.

Now that he’s retired, Midnight Matador, whose registered name is A Famous Boon, will go back to his old barn name: Amos.

Woody Trivia • Hollywood at Dusk was born May 14, 2005.

• He is 15 hands tall and weighs in at approximately 1,100 pounds. By the way, a “hand” equals four inches, and horses are measured from the ground to their withers to determine height. The “withers” on a horse is the highest point on a horse’s back, basically about where the mane ends.

• Woody’s diet consists of alfalfa hay, which is a high-protein hay, and oats. He is also fed vitamin and mineral supplements. Jackson says, “This meets his nutritional requirements and promotes good G.I. tract health.”

One of the things that drew Jackson to Woody is his gentle temperament and athletic ability.

“Woody is starting out with as much potential as any horse that has been a part of the program,” Jackson explains. “I think as he goes out before the public, people will see how mild mannered, well-trained and attractive he is. I think he will become yet another horse in the long history of the program that will be popular and admired by the Tech community. He has a great personality…he will do his part to carry on the proud tradition of the Masked Rider.”

Woody was put through a series of tests that were similar to what he’ll experience as the Masked Rider horse. He attended Goin’ Band practices, observed fireworks and Raider Red (which can sometimes be very similar experiences), he watched and heard pistol and cannon fire and carried flags. His final test was appearing in the bowl game in December. He passed with flying colors, and Jackson knew he was the one.

“He was the best combination of conformation, attitude and brokenness of all the horses I evaluated,” Jackson says. “He fit what we need and must have in a horse.”

The horse’s disposition is important because he is constantly put in high-stress situations. The Masked Rider horse never receives sedatives, so it’s imperative that its natural disposition is calm.

Ashley Wenzel, the current Masked Rider, agrees that Woody is a cool character.

“Woody is very personable but nosy, too,” says Wenzel. “He loves to be right up in whatever you’re doing. He makes a great Masked Rider horse because of his easygoing temperament. He’s always alert, but doesn’t get scared at anything.”

Jackson explains how he ensures the Masked Rider steed is sure-footed and tranquil.

“We select horses and ride them properly so they don’t need any assistance on game day,” he notes. “They are tolerant of the crowd and other stimuli because of their gentle, trusting nature. The training and care they have received to prepare them for these situations would be stressful for a horse if he was not of the right mindset for the job.”

Speaking of game days, it’s not just a big production for the football team.

Woody has a well-prepared team, too. Jackson is responsible for all issues related to the horse running and his safety on the football field. The university veterinarian, Tiffanie Brooks, D.V.M., ’93, ’96, is there in case the horse is injured and needs treatment. Her husband, Chance Brooks, Ph.D., ’94, ’97, an associate professor of meat science in the Department of Animal & Food Sciences, is on the field and assists with safety issues.

The Masked Rider has two student assistants who provide her with anything she might need while on the field. These same two assistants travel to every public event—nearly 15,000 miles a year—during the Masked Rider’s tenure.

There are also approximately 15 students who are part of the field safety team that assists in keeping a safe field and sideline environment for the horse.

Field safety is of paramount importance, because if there’s one thing that makes a Red Raider’s heart go pitter-patter, it’s watching the Masked Rider thunder across the football field on a stunning black horse.

S he ryl S woopes has seen a lot of different arenas over the last 20 years.

But there was something about walking into United Spirit Arena for the first time in years this past summer that made her stop and just look around in awe.

“I would have loved to have played here,” she said with a smile.

But in all honesty, the new arena hosts team after team partly thanks to Swoopes, Marsha Sharp and the accomplishments of many Lady Raider teams over the years that helped make an arena like the USA a reality for today’s Lady Raiders.

On Sunday (Feb. 17), the Lady Raiders who did it all walked onto the floor at the Spirit Arena as a team for the first time to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their 1993 national championship.

The first 5,000 fans that entered the doors beginning at 1 p.m. received a free t-shirt replica of the 1993 locker room championship tee. The 1993 championship game also was shown on the RaiderVision screens in the arena.

Nearly 9,000 fans filled the United Spirit Arena to watch the current Lady Raiders beat Texas, 69-62, and help celebrate the 20th anniversary of Tech’s national championship.

“It’s so amazing to think that all of that really was 20 years ago,” said Sharp, the former Lady Raider head coach. “I am so glad that I could be a part of this great event and it really is going to be something else to see all those girls together again.”

Swoopes, Sharp, Linden Weese, Krista Kirkland-Gerlich, Cynthia Clinger, Noel Johnson, Michi Atkins, Patrice Conwright, Janice Farris, Nikki Heath, Diana Kersey, Kim Pruitt, Stephanie Scott, Michelle Thomas and Melinda White all returned for the celebration, which took place during halftime of Sunday’s game vs. Texas.

And the chosen date could not be any more appropriate. Feb. 17, 2013, was exactly 20 years to the day that Tech beat Texas in Austin to help jump start its title run in 1993.

20 Years Later: The Champions Reunite

The Longhorns were the last team to beat Tech that season before the group won 19 consecutive games en route to the Final Four in Atlanta, Ga. The Lady Raiders beat those 19 opponents by an average of 24 points per game. Tech averaged 88.8 points per game as a team during the run, scoring 100 points or more six times.

But ask any of the girls, and outside of the championship game win over Ohio State, it all goes back to winning the game against Texas.

“That was a special moment for us because they had beat us that season and we had never won there,” said Swoopes, who scored 955 points that season and averaged 28.1 per game. “So for us to go in to Austin and win that game, it was huge.”

Tubby Smith Becomes Head Basketball Coach

Tubby Smith was named the 16th head basketball coach in Texas Tech history on April 1, 2013.

Smith ar rives at Texas Tech with 22 years of head coaching experience where he has amassed a 511-226 career record at the likes of Minnesota, Kentucky, Georgia and Tulsa. In that time, he has claimed a National Championship (Kentucky in 1997-98), made four Elite Eight appearances, nine Sweet Sixteen appearances and has posted 20-or-more victories in 19 seasons while making 17 trips to the NCAA Tournament.

Smith comes to Lubbock after six seasons at Minnesota where he led the Golden Gophers to three NCAA Tournament appearances, and two trips to the National Invitation Tournament, including a runner-up finish in 2012, and six victories over top-10 ranked teams. Prior to Smith's arrival, Minnesota had not defeated a top 10 team in almost three seasons.

Fans now have a great option for viewing Red Raider sporting events at their convenience. Introduced in Fall 2012, TexasTech.TV is a website that allows people to watch events on demand on their computers or mobile devices. The service also airs live events and special programming.

“The idea is to further expand the footprint of our Third Tier Rights,” says Blayne Beal, associate athletic director. “With select distribution of various events on FOX (TV) platforms, we felt like the digital platform of TexasTech.TV was the right way to deliver all of our other content on a worldwide basis.”

Some of the other content includes coaches’ shows, news conferences, signing day specials and full-length television shows “Raider Power” and “Red Raider Weekly.”

“TexasTech.TV is the best way to stay in touch with all things Texas Tech,” Beal says.

“If you are a fan of baseball, soccer, softball, volleyball and tennis, then TexasTech.

TV will afford you the opportunity to watch a majority of those games/matches.

TexasTech.TV is a great way to bring Texas Tech Athletics directly to the consumer through computer, tablet and smart phones.

“This is exclusive content. You won’t find it anywhere else.”

Much of the content is free, but viewers must subscribe before accessing it. Pricing and schedules are available at TexasTech.com.

This format for sports programming has been around for a while, but Beal adds that the way TexasTech.TV is packaged and centralized is unique—and user-friendly.

What was your major and class year at Tech, plus any other degrees you may have earned? I was a pre-vet, animal science major as an undergraduate, and received my BS degree in 1983.

Where are you employed and what is your position? I am the owner of The Waggoner Law Firm.

What are the names of your family members? My father, Kelley Waggoner, is deceased. He was the Masked Rider in 1962. My mother, Bene Waggoner attended Tech. I have a twin brother, Dan, who graduated from Tech in 1983. Dan was student body president. My two younger brothers, Lance and Wade, reside in the Dallas area.

Major activities in which you were involved as a student at Tech: Student Senate, Agricultural Council, Kappa Alpha Order, Mortar Board, Omicron Delta Kappa and member of the Collegiate Livestock and Horse Judging teams.

What is one of your fondest memories from your Tech days? Being a member of nationally recognized livestock and horse judging teams.

What is one thing you’ve enjoyed seeing occur recently at Texas Tech?

I have enjoyed seeing the enhancement of the student union building, and placing a greater emphasis on recruiting a more diverse group of undergraduate students.

What are your interests and hobbies? Team roping, camping and history.

What is your favorite book? I have several favorites. Two most recent books I enjoyed reading are “Twilight’s Last Gleaming” and “Killing Lincoln.”

What character trait do you value highly in an individual? Honesty, loyalty, humility and devotion.

What is your favorite movie? (Or, what is the last movie you saw?)

“Glory.”

If you could ask five or six people to your home for an evening, who would they be? Jesus Christ, my dad, C. S. Lewis, Thomas Jefferson, Charles Goodnight and George W. Bush.

What are your interests and hobbies? I remain very involved with supporting 4-H and FFA students in my county. I enjoy serving as an official at several major Texas livestock shows.

Letter From The Executive Director Dear Alumni Association Member: We thank you for your continuing support of the Alumni Association and Texas Tech University in 2012. That support is critical to enable us to do the things we do to promote your alma mater.

In 2012, our staff began to implement the tactics and strategies contained in the strategic plan our National Board of Directors adopted in 2011.

The Texas Tech Legacy Program continues to grow and now has enrolled more than 2,400 legacies.

The Texas Tech Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (under the Alumni Association umbrella of programming) had a great year in 2012. OLLI offered 100 courses and had an enrollment of 1,400 members.

We continue to expand our electronic communication efforts through our website and our presence in the world of social media. I would encourage you to visit TexasTechAlumni.org to renew your membership or to learn about Texas Tech events in your area.

The year ended on a high note for Texas Tech with the hiring of new Head Football Coach Kliff Kingsbury.

Here are some more 2012 highlights for your Alumni Association: • 22,000 = the number of Texas Tech Alumni Association members. That is Raider Power.

• 85 = alumni association scholarships given to new and current students at Texas Tech.

• $238,000 = the dollar value of those scholarships given annually.

• 10,000+ = the number of fellow alumni and friends who came to the Frazier Alumni Pavilion before home football games this past fall.

• 1,572 = the number of Official Texas Tech Rings sold.

• $13,500 = the amount of money donated for the Honors College Initiative.

• $5,600,000 = the estimated amount of additional money TTAA could

raise to build on these programs if every member moved up one level in membership.

John Aure Buesseler, M.D.,

Lubbock, died March 7. He was the emeritus founding dean of the Texas Tech Medical School and emeritus founding vice president for health affairs and health sciences of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.

A native of Madison, Wisc., he graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a bachelor’s with honors in 1941 and a doctor of medicine degree in 1944. He attended Harvard Buesseler University Graduate School of Medicine in Ophthalmology and the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Medicine in Ophthalmology in 1947 and 1948, and served as a resident physician in ophthalmology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia from 1948-1951. He was appointed founding chief of ophthalmology at the University of Missouri Medical Center in Columbia in 1959. While at the University of Missouri, he attended its Graduate School of Business and Public Administration and earned a master’s in business administration

in 1965. While on sabbatical leave in 1966 from that institution, he attended the Cornell University Graduate School of Business and Public Administration, where he studied for his doctorate in business and public administration. He served as executive director of Kansas City General Hospital and Medical Center from 19691970—where he established the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine.

In 1970, he moved to Lubbock, where he served as professor of ophthalmology and founding professor and chairman of Health Organization Management, a joint-venture department between the School of Medicine and the Rawls College of Business Administration. In 1973, the Texas Tech University Board of Regents made him a full professor for his achievements as founding dean of the Medical School.

Buesseler volunteered for the U.S. Army as a Private First Class enlisted medical student in the Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP). He served in World War II, the Korean Conflict and, while in Vietnam, he was the senior-ranking Special Forces Officer in the theatre.

Survivors include his wife, Cathryn "Cathy" Anne Hansen Buesseler, a former faculty member at Texas Tech University.

from the Texas Tech University Personal Financial Planning Department won first place and a $5,000 scholarship at the 2013 Foundation for Financial Service Professionals (FSP) Industry Issue Competition at the Arizona Institute.

Tyler Chaney and David Wilder were chosen by a panel of judges through a blind review process as one of the top three teams to advance to the final oral round of the competition based on their written solution to a critical industry issue, which was previously submitted in October.

The title of this year’s issue was “Which Way to Go? Best Practices in Identifying and Evaluating Specific Careers in the Financial Services Profession.” Chaney and Wilder chose to evaluate three professions: a life insurance company actuary, a fee-based certified financial planner and an advanced life insurance professional.

This is the second consecutive year Texas Tech has placed in the top three teams at the Industry Issue Competition.

A team of Texas Tech University School of Law students won the regional champion title at the National Trial Competition in Baton Rouge, La., in February.

The team—comprised of third-year Brian Sullivan and second-year students Jefferson Fisher and Josh Avelar —is now preparing for the national finals after securing Texas Tech’s third regional win in four years at the tournament.

The National Trial Competition, administered by the Texas Young Lawyers Association and co-sponsored by the American College of Trial Lawyers, is the largest and most prestigious mock trial tournament in the country.

Kevin Redwine , a graduate student in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economic, was one of 10 graduate students from across the country selected to attend the USDA’s 2013 Agricultural Outlook Forum in February at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington, Va. He was selected for the honor on the basis of an exceptional essay on agriculture’s greatest challenges.

Students who attend land-grant, Hispanic-serving and American Association of State Colleges of Agriculture and Renewable Resources Institutions receive assistance from USDA and corporate sponsors in order to attend the forum.

Lin Humphrey , a marketing doctoral student at the Rawls College of

Business, was a featured speaker at the BusinessNext Social in January at the Rio Casino & Conference Center in Las Vegas, Nev. BusinessNext Social is the world’s premier conference for social business, marketing and IT executives.

Humphrey’s session focused on the rise of “The Connected Consumer” through the intersection of mobile technology and social media. The convergence of these two trends enables self-expression through social sharing.

The session overviewed initial research findings on this topic with tangible examples of best practice in mobile and social business geared towards today’s connected consumers.

Jenna Johnson has been awarded a scholarship from the Department of

The conference was held in Austin, Texas, in January as part of the IEEE Radio and Wireless Week. The title of the paper was “Distortion Analysis of Continuous-Wave Radar Sensor for Complete Respiration Pattern Monitoring.”

Tanner Adams, Bo Hutto, Trevor King and Heather Rode , juniors in the Department of Animal and Food Sciences, recently won the University Cook-off People’s Choice Award with their “Pork Wellington Bites” at the North American Meat Association (NAMA) in Las Vegas. Undergraduate students from nine universities vied for the title, preparing dishes for conference attendees. The People’s Choice Award was determined by a ballot system after everyone had tasted each product.
