Texas Tech’s Status

T e x a s T e c h U n i v e rsi t y has met the criteria and will be certified as a National Research University by the coordinating board. The enabling data was submitted in October 2011, and the state has approved our submission.

Texas Tech will receive in the order of $8.5 to $9 million a year as a result of this designation. The University of Houston also was certified.

The quest for Tier One status has occupied a great deal of time and attention for Texas Tech administrators over the past three years. House Bill 51 has enabled seven Emerging Research Universities (ERUs) to be designated as National Research Universities (NRUs) if and when they meet objective criteria (for two consecutive years) as recommended by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and approved by the State Legislature.

The ERUs that qualify for NRU status are entitled to yearly payouts from a National Research University Fund valued at $500 million in 2009. The fund was established through House Joint Resolution (HJR) 14 and was approved for use as authorized by a 56 percent majority of Texas voters in November 2009.

The one benchmark that all seven emerging research universities must meet is to have $45 million in restricted research expenditures. Texas Tech exceeded that mark by $15 million in FY09 and by about $5 million in FY10 and FY11.

The emerging research university also must meet four of six additional criteria: 1. Endowment of $400 million. Texas Tech’s endowment was $434 million in FY10 and $475 million in FY11.

2. Membership in Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi or the Association of Research Libraries. Texas Tech is a member of all three.

3. Grant 200 Ph.D.s Texas Tech granted 215 in 2010 and 232 in 2011.

4. High quality faculty, which means: a. five National Academy Members or b. seven faculty awards or c. Comprehensive review of five doctoral programs Because the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board did not include Fulbright Awards in this category, Texas Tech may fall short by one faculty award. We do not have the requisite number of National Academy members.

5. A high quality of freshman class a. 75th percentile of SAT at 1210 or b. 75th percentile of ACT at 26 or c. 50 percent of entering freshmen in top 25 percent and d. Freshman class must show progress toward Closing the Gaps (e.g., Federal TRiO Program)

How Texas Tech Does: a. Texas Tech is at 1190 on the SAT b. Texas Tech is at 26 for the ACT c. Texas Tech is at 51.96 percent of entering freshmen in the top 25 percent And d. We have Upward Bound, which is a TRiO Program.

6. High-quality graduate programs—Number of graduate programs greater than 50 and the following: a. Comprehensive review of graduate financial support or b. GRE scores for five Ph.D. programs equal to or greater than the national mean and c. Master’s graduation rate equal to or greater than 56 percent; doctoral rate equal to or greater than 58 percent and d. Median time to doctorate is eight years or less.

How Texas Tech Does: Texas Tech has 167 graduate programs a. Does not need to do this because we meet the other three b. We meet this benchmark c. Texas Tech is at 71 percent for master’s and 60.2 percent for doctoral d. Texas Tech’s median time to doctorate is eight years.

There is some confusion about the term “Tier One.” Tech officials have used the term “Tier One” when discussing our drive to qualify for NRU designation by the coordinating board.

That designation certainly would put Texas Tech in a “Tier One” status in this state. In the broader sense, obtaining NRU designation would be a major step toward ultimately gaining AAU (Association of American Universities) designation, which represents Tier One universities across the country.

The chief architect of our move to NRU designation on the academic front is Texas Tech University President Guy Bailey, Ph.D. When he was the chief academic officer at UT-San Antonio (prior to becoming chancellor of the University of Missouri at Kansas City) he became extremely knowledgeable about how funding and reporting for higher education in this state works and it is paying off now for Texas Tech. Of course, Chancellor Kent Hance is responsible for Tech reaching its fundraising goals. He is now closing in on a capital campaign that will raise $1 billion.

Another component of House Bill 51 was the Texas Research Incentive Program (TRIP). This provided funding for the ERUs. Specifically, $50 million per year was set aside by the 81st Legislature (reduced to $47.5 million by the 82nd Legislature) for cash matches to gifts designated for research.

The 82nd Legislature added $35 million to TRIP funding for a total of $82.5 million for 2009-2013. A total of $65.3 million

of TIP funds were distributed to the ERUs and Texas qualified for 24.4 million (37.3 percent).

Speaking of the legislature, the Legislative Affairs Committee of the Association is once again planning on a successful Tech Day in Austin during the 2013 Legislative Session.

The key to success is the participation of alumni from all over the state. We will make these dates available to everyone as soon as they are worked out by the committee and approved by the Alumni Association board.

The committee discussed following the same schedule we had in 2011 when we deleted the breakfast, lunch and afternoon reception meals. This schedule will create a substantial savings to our budget. The committee also decided that we should continue to provide first-class Texas Tech System gifts for the legislators. The Price Group will once again work on the design and creation of these gifts in our behalf.

We also hope to reserve space near the

Capitol Cafeteria, as we did in 2011, making it easier for our guests/volunteers to purchase meals for themselves.

We also plan to have a Texas Tech group photo somewhere inside the Capitol (probably in the Rotunda) as we have done in the past. Another item we hope to repeat from our 2011 effort was having some type of an identifier for our volunteers so they are immediately recognized as being a representative of Tech. Once the date for our Legislative Day is set, we can move forward with specific detail.

The Texas Tech Political Action Committee is an effort to solicit financial gifts in order to make contributions to various legislators who have been supportive of higher education. This effort remains TOTALLY separate from the TTAA, as is required by law. The individuals involved in this effort act independently from the TTAA and the university.

Carey Hobbs, from Waco, Texas, has been the chair of this effort. His history in political activity over the years makes

him an ideal person to coordinate this effort. Carey and his committee make the decision on who receives the gifts and how much they are to receive. We have an article in this issue of the Texas Techsan to bring attention to the need for donors and how it supports higher education.

T ex a s T e c h r e c e ntly lost another great supporter when Bill Scales died on April 22 in Fort Worth. He served on the board and was a past president of both the Midland and Fort Worth chapters of the then-Texas Tech Ex-Students Association. I do not recall ever going to a Fort Worth event that he did not attend until his health failed.

We are seeing a lot of loyal Red Raiders pass from the scene. Many of these people, such as Bill, helped build this association. Hopefully, others will step up and take their place.

PEOPLE A $480,000 USDA-NIFA grant has been awarded to four Texas Tech faculty members, Jennifer Moore-Kucera, Ph.D., an assistant professor of soil and environmental microbiology with the Department of Plant and Soil Science; Wayne Hudnall, Ph.D., the B.L. Allen Endowed Chair for Pedology; Juske Horita, Ph.D., a professor with the Department of Geosciences; and John Zak, Ph.D., an ecosystem ecologist in the Department of Biological Sciences. The funds will be disbursed

throughout a five-year period and will allow the multi-disciplinary team to study Lubbock-area soil microbial communities, looking for key indicators of soil carbon transformations when Conservation Reserve Program land is converted to cropland.

Two assistant professors of electrical and computer engineering at Texas Tech were selected for $400,000 National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Awards. Hamed Mohsenian-Rad, Ph.D., received

this award because of his career development plan entitled “Self-Organizing Demand Side Management for Smart Grid: A Dynamic Game-Theoretic Framework.” His research focuses on the application of dynamic game theory to demand-side power consumption management.

William D. Lawson, Ph.D., an associate professor of civil and environmental engineering was named to the Texas Society of Professional Engineers, Engineer of the Year. This honor is the highest given to a

member of the society.

Texas Tech’s new Masked Rider, Ashley Wenzel, accepted the reins to Midnight Matador on April 20, becoming the 51st student to don the mascot mask and cape. A sophomore majoring in education, she will

spend a year promoting spirit within the university and goodwill for Texas Tech at athletic events and other school and civic functions across Texas. Wenzel began taking Western horseback riding lessons from a family friend at the age of five. At 12, she ventured into competitive English riding for four years.

She participated in rodeo events for three years during high school and was also a member of the Friendswood FFA horse judging team. In 2008, she traveled to Colorado to compete in the national Little Britches Rodeo Association and was awarded “Rookie of the Year.” Wenzel plans to teach high school math after graduation.

Texas Tech University scientists have filed for a patent on a new device that could make some drug testing faster and less expensive . Siva Vanapalli, Ph.D., an assistant

professor in Texas Tech’s Department of Chemical Engineering and his team created a simple microfluidic device about the size of a penny that could replace the current drug screening systems. Vanapalli’s work was recently featured in the journal Lab on a Chip.

The pharmaceutical industry screens hundreds of thousands of drugs each year using large robots that deliver one specific concentration of the drug at a time, a time-consuming process that requires large amounts of the compound and reagents. The new device looks like a computer chip with multiple microchannels and nanoliter-wells to hold an array of droplets of a substance. A scientist can vary the presence of other materials from drop-to-drop, thus testing multiple concentrations of the drug at the same time. Vanapalli’s research is supported in part by the National Science Foundation and the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas.

university officials, the endowed chair was recently elevated from a professorship to an endowed chair with a recent substantial gift. The funds are used to provide support in Agricultural Education and Communications for research, teaching and outreach in youth leadership in a rural context.

Shirley Garrison received his bachelor’s degree in agricultural education in 1940 from Texas Tech.

After serving in World War II, he spent two years in a post-war program for food distribution and agricultural rehabilitation in Europe before returning to the South Plains. He formed the Garrison Seed Co. in 1996, in addition to becoming involved in the cattle industry. He married LuCille Simons in 2007.

Michael Galyean, Ph.D., became the permanent dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources effective April 1.

He was named interim dean in February 2011, after the retirement of John Burns, Ph.D. He joined the Texas Tech staff in 1998 and was chairman of the Animal Care and use Committee from 2002 to 2006. Galyean earned a bachelor’s degree from New Mexico State University, and a master’s degree in animal science and doctoral degree in animal nutrition, both from Oklahoma State University.

Along with awards from other organizations and universities, Galyean has received multiple awards from Texas Tech, including the CASNR’s Outstanding Researcher Award in 2004 and 2005 and the President’s Academic Achievement Award in 2005. He was named a Horn Professor in 2006.

The chairman of Texas Tech’s Department of Agricultural Education and Communications, Steve Fraze, Ph.D., was named the Shirley L. and LuCille Garrison Endowed Chair in Rural Youth Development on Feb. 23. According to

On April 20 Texas Tech honored two students for their serving in secret as mascot Raider Red. Jordaine Holden and Erik Gonzalez revealed their true identities to the public during the seventh annual Passing of the Guns ceremony. Holden, a sophomore early childhood

education major from Oklahoma City, served as Raider Red for one year, appearing as Red about 50 times. As required, she is a member of the High Riders, and serves as head of the press and public relations committee for the organization. Gonzalez, a theatre arts major and education minor from Brownsville, served as Raider Red for the past two years and said it has been the best experience of his college career. He appeared as Raider Red more than 100 times in the two years he spent as the mascot.

With his red mustache and floppy white hat, the swaggering Raider Red is a symbol of Texas Tech spirit and pride. He was designed in the early 1970s by Saddle Tramp Jim Gaspard, based on the illustrations of Dirk West.

Siva Vanapalli, Ph.D., received the five-year award that recognized his career development plan entitled, “Collective hydrodynamics of confined drops in microfluidic parking network’s.” Vanapalli chose to focus his research on the fundamental

understanding of tiny water drops in networks of microchannels. This research should ultimately yield inexpensive miniaturized devices for rapid screening application in medicine, biology and materials science.

Allan J. Kuethe, Ph.D., a Horn Professor of History, has become a member of Spain’s Royal Academy of History. Kuethe

specializes in Latin American studies and 18th Century Spanish history, and will be the 16th American inducted into the academy since 1956. Kuethe, along with former Texas Tech President Donald Haragan, Ph.D., helped to establish the Texas Tech University Center in Seville, Spain. As a member of the academy, Kuethe will have access to all the academy’s resources in Barcelona.

education or a closely related field, and they must have three years’ experience teaching science in K-12 or in an informal science setting, such as a zoo or museum.

The entire program is taught at a distance—online—except for two weeks on campus each summer and attendance each spring at a three-day national conference of a professional association. The program is designed to produce graduates who can make a difference in science education at the local, state, national or international levels.

Texas Tech’s Burkhart Center for Autism Education and Research has been awarded a grant from The CH Foundation to assist families raising children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Two types of funding are offered

through the initiative: an informative clearinghouse regarding local ASD resources and services and, secondly, a way for community members to contact Family Support Specialist Becky Critz.

The second type of support service will be reserved for families who report more complex needs that require a more in-depth assessment before appropriate referral to community resources can be offered to the family.

Through the grant, the Burkhart Center will conduct a study with families raising a child with autism to identify common sources of parenting and family stress across different age ranges for individuals with autism, the

range of services to which families have access in their communities, and the barriers experienced while attempting to access services for their family. The final product of the grant will be a better understanding of community resources available to parents seeking help raising a child with autism.

An ELS Language Center was opened at Texas Tech in June to teach English as a second language to incoming international undergraduate and graduate students.

ELS Education Services Inc. will operate the facility.

Tech officials looked at campuses with ELS Educational Services programs and found that officials at these universities reported the program exceeded expectations by doubling or tripling the amount of international students. Providing an accredited English language program quickly to meet new Homeland Security regulations was unfeasible in terms of space and resources. Officials chose ELS Education Services program because it could provide its own space near campus and would provide the university an accredited program instantly.

Students will pay ELS for classes and housing, but will pay Tech fees to access some buildings on campus, like the library.

Researchers at Texas Tech University’s Llano River Field Station in Junction received a $1.1 million grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to develop a watershed protection plan for the Upper Llano River watershed, which runs through campus. Tom Arsuffi, Ph.D.,

director of the field station and watershed coordinator for the project, said the money will be used to develop a geographical inventory of the area and determine current water quality and biological conditions. The project area includes the North and South Llano rivers merging in Junction into the Llano River, a key component of flows to the Colorado River and a critical supplier of water to the Highland Lakes and city of Austin, especially during drought. The roughly 250-square-mile project also dovetails into the new South Central Climate Science Center because studying watersheds can be used to look at climate change.

Ginger Kerrick G

inger Kerrick is the first female Hispanic flight director for NASA. In the history of the program, only 80 people have served as flight directors with 12 of those 80 being women. In her role, she leads a team of flight controllers, the crew, support personnel and engineering experts across multiple space centers to manage and carry out human spaceflight missions.

Kerrick supported missions associated with both the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station programs, including lead assignments for Expedition 14 and STS-126/ULF2.

The El Paso native earned her bachelor’s degree in physics in 1991 and her master’s degree in physics in 1993 from Texas Tech.

She began working full-time for NASA’s safety organization in May 1994. After working for a year in the safety organization, Kerrick then worked a six-month rotation with the Mission Operations Directorate as an instructor for the Environmental Control and Life Support System of the yet-to-be-flown International Space Station. Three months into that assignment, she learned that she was selected for astronaut interviews. She was disqualified during the interview process because of medical reasons. In 1996, she was permanently assigned to the Mission Operations Directorate.

Following her experience as an International Space Station Life Support Systems instructor, Kerrick created a new position— Russian training integration instructor—to integrate training and operations products among Houston, the Gargarin Cosmonaut Training Center and Roscosmos, the Russian space program. Her position supported the Expedition 1 Space Station crew in 2001.

After the success of that mission, Kerrick became the first nonastronaut CapCom (capsule communicator), the position that relays information from Mission Control to the crew. She held that position for four years until becoming a flight director in 2005.

rian McCoy, president and CEO of McCoy Corp., holds family values high in his list of priorities. As head of the fourthgeneration, family-owned, San Marcos, Texas-based McCoy’s Building Supply, he oversees 85 building supply stores in five states.

One of the company’s philosophies is that their businesses are closed on Sunday so that employees can spend time with their families.

The company has been operating continuously since it was founded in 1927 by McCoy’s grandfather. The McCoy Team serves independent homebuilders, repair/remodel contractors and projectoriented do-it-yourselfers as targeted customers.

McCoy has been actively involved with the business since the age of 17. He has worked as a yard hand, truck driver, floor salesman, assistant store manager, store manager, merchandise manager, vice president, co-president and chairman of the board during the past 40 years.

The Galveston, Texas, native graduated from Ball High School in 1972. He earned a bachelor’s degree in finance from Texas Tech University in 1975.

He is also a partner in McCoy Remme Ranches, a cow-calf operation with land holdings in far West Texas. He serves on the boards of the Lumbermen’s Association of Texas and Intimate Life Ministries. Additionally, he is president of the board of the McCoy College of Business Administration Development Foundation at Texas State University.

McCoy was selected for the Samaritan Center’s Ethics in Business Award in Austin in 2003, The San Marcos Chamber of Commerce chose him as Business Person of the Year in 2004. In 2006, he was honored as a Distinguished Alumnus of the Rawls College of Business Administration at Texas Tech University.

In 2005, he and his wife, Wetonnah, were inducted into the Spur Society, an organization established to recognize donors who had given more than $1 million to the Texas Tech University System.

Brian is married to his high school sweetheart, Wetonnah Lane, and they have two grown children and four grandchildren. His daughter, Meagan McCoy Jones, is vice president of field support with McCoy’s Building Supply. Brian’s son, Reid, is employed by the United States Department of State.

David J. Schmidly, Ph.D. A

fter a long and varied career in higher education, David J. Schmidly, Ph.D., retired as president of The University of New Mexico in June 2012. He served in that capacity since 2007. He was responsible for campuses in Gallup, Los Alamos, Taos, Valencia and Rio Rancho, as well as the UNM Health Sciences Center, home to the renowned UNM Cancer Center.

Under Schimdly’s leadership, UNM saw major growth in the student body, including recruitment of National Merit and National Hispanic Scholars. He was inducted as a member of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities governing board in 2008, in recognition of his commitment to diversity.

Schmidly was president of Oklahoma State University from 20022007. He led the formulation of the Strategic Plan and an updated Campus Master Plan for the OSU System, which included a fiveyear, $826-million construction process and a total of 278 integrated plans representing all OSU campuses, areas and units.

He became the 13th president of his alma mater, Texas Tech University, after serving as vice president for research, graduate studies and technology, as well as dean of the Graduate School there. While at Texas Tech, Schmidly helped found the Institute for Environmental and Human Health and established collaborative partnerships with community colleges throughout the state. He helped develop a new Interdisciplinary Degree in Natural History in the Honors College and was instrumental in expanding the National Science Research Lab. During his tenure, Texas Tech created new graduate centers for engineering in Abilene and Amarillo, academic centers in Fredericksburg and Marble Falls and a new freshman orientation program.

Schmidly spent 25 years at Texas A&M University, including five as CEO of the Galveston campus and six as head of the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Science.

In addition to his leadership roles, Schmidly is a noted scientific naturalist and author of nine natural history and conservation books and more than 100 scientific articles about mammals. He has a species of deer mouse named for him, Peromyscus schmidlyi.

The Levelland, Texas, native earned his bachelor’s degree in zoology from Texas Tech in 1966 and his master’s degree in zoology from Texas Tech in 1968. He earned his Ph.D. degree in 1971 from University of Illinois Champaign/Urbana.

While a student at Texas Tech, he was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity. In the years since he graduated, he remained involved with the school by serving as a member of the Texas Tech Foundation, Texas Tech Past Presidents, Matador Society, Chancellor’s Council, Texas Tech University and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Deans and the Big 12 Chancellors and Presidents.

He and his wife, Janet Knox Schmidly, a 1966 Texas Tech graduate, have two children—Brian James Schmidly and Katherine Elaine Schmidly-Ong, and four grandchildren. july/august 2012 T E C H S A N «

T

here’s not a Starbucks or a spa or a PGA golf course. No matter how hard you look, you won’t find a glitzy five star restaurant, a water park or a mess of people.

What you will find is lots of land and sky, lots of quiet, lots of stars at night and, ironically, some of the fastest wi-fi in Texas.

The X Bar Ranch Nature Retreat 18 miles west of Eldorado, Texas, is a place you go to escape.

Stan Meador’s nature retreat is part of his family’s 6thgeneration 7,100 acre working ranch. His brother, Chris, who also graduated from Tech in 1998 with a bachelor of science in interdisciplinary agriculture, runs the ranching operation. His sister, Erin Meador Clark '00, also has a bachelor's in Spanish.

Stan started the off-the-beaten-path tourism portion.

“When I first came up with the idea for the X Bar Ranch Nature Retreat, my family bit at the idea,” says Meador. “I saw how the population of Texas was growing and that access to private land is limited. We felt it was an opportunity for us, as private landowners.”

That was in 1995, while Meador was still living in Spain. A bit of a world-traveler, he completed four exchange programs throughout high school and college: there were a couple summers in Mexico, two exchange programs in the Netherlands,

E D I S E H T ON Meador notes that he’s never happy doing only one thing and that he’s never held a regular job. From the time he was a kid, he has had jobs carved out for him where none existed previously. One of those was promoting the Texas Tech license plate program as an undergraduate.

It was a new program and Meador was suggested as the man for the job by a friend from Texas A&M. It meshed with his degree and Meador kicked off that program with glowing success.

Recently Meador has joined The Earth Partners, a company that, in partnership with landowners, is seeking to produce renewable biofuel using cedar and mesquite harvested from ranches in the Southwest.

These pernicious trees cover many ranches, choking out beneficial trees and plants while sucking up groundwater like sponges.

The Earth Partners will contract with ranchers to harvest the destructive trees. The trees will be processed, and the resulting pellets—biomass feedstock—will be sold to large-scale energy producers in Europe. The biomass pellets can be used in heating units that burn coal, but unlike coal, they burn cleaner and are a renewable fuel.

including at the International Business School in The Hague and, finally, he spent his final spring semester in college in Spain. When time came for him to graduate—he received a bachelor’s in 1995 in public realtions, with a minor in marketing—he opted to stay in Spain and had the university mail his diploma.

“I was in Valencia, Spain,” says Meador, who is fluent in Spanish and Dutch. “I was supposed to be there five months and stayed two-and-a-half years. That’s where I met my wife, Gloria.”

Meador was teaching English during his time in Spain, and was looking for another job when he began researching ecotourism. In May 1996 Meador launched his business.

“It was a long, slow struggle,” he notes. “We’re not a destination zone, like New Braunfels or Fredericksburg. Gloria—a native of Spain—had an understanding of the Internet and created our first website in 1998, which was a big deal then because it made us stand out.”

Although ranch life was in Meador’s blood, he never held an interest in ranching like his brother Chris.

“I never looked at the ranch with much affection until I went to Holland, which is 13 times smaller than Texas,” Meador says. “Friends from there would come here and be blown away by the wide open spaces.”

Visitors to the X Bar have the option of staying at two different locations on the ranch. The Live Oak Lodge area includes a lodge, six cabins, a bunkroom, three tent campsites and three RV hookups, as well as a patio with a large barbecue pit. There is also a rustic swimming pool. Then there’s the Round House, which was constructed in the late 1960s, and is secluded on another area of the ranch.

The Live Oak Lodge includes a lounging area for hanging out—Meador’s motto is “Our Place, Your Pace.” There is also a full kitchen—the cabins do

not include one—for storing and preparing food. The wide porch at Live Oak Lodge looks out over the ranch and barbecue area.

Patrons often utilize the many trails around the ranch for mountain biking. The ranch’s handmade trails are also used for hiking, adventurers, bird watchers and photographers can traverse 1,800 acres of the ranch by following the markers. Patrons enjoy birds, wildlife, livestock and varied flora.

The trails are three, nine and 12 miles long.

Cyclists are common visitors to the X Bar Ranch. They are encouraged to follow a number of routes to area sites such as the Sonora Caverns (only 21 miles south) or Ft. McKavett (60 miles east). Meador notes that the roads are paved and lightly traveled.

Stargazers and amateur astronomers flock to the X Bar. Because of its remote location, the inky night sky is pristine and provides a perfect medium for the main attraction—the stars. Meador has carved out two protected fields in which astronomers may study the sky, night or day. Each year he hosts the week-long Eldorado Star Party, this year slated for Oct. 8-14, and sponsored by the Austin Astronomical Society and the San Antonio Astronomical Association.

For the first time since its inception in 1947

, Texas 4-H Roundup was held somewhere other than Texas A&M University in College Station—it was held at Texas Tech.

The 5,000 attendees were primarily 4-H members, parents, Extension employees and volunteers. Held at the United Spirit Arena June 11-15, it was a groundbreaking occurrence because 4-H Roundup had always been held in College Station.

Texas AgriLife Extension is part of the Texas A&M University System. Texas AgriLife Extension is headquartered at A&M because it’s Texas’ land grant university. Every state has a land grant university— a result of the Morrill Act of 1862— that receives federal funds earmarked for agricultural research and education/outreach. Because it is the state’s designated land grant school, Texas A&M receives millions of dollars annually for agricultural research, education and outreach.

Texas Tech has the state’s only other Division I college of agriculture that conducts research and education/outreach. A number of faculty and staff from the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources and the College of Human Sciences at Texas Tech also wanted the university showcased.

Many 4-H leaders and volunteers wanted to ease financial and travel burdens of kids on the western side of Texas and at the same time expose kids in the eastern half of the state to the colleges west of I-35.

Richard Ligon, a ’58, ’60 animal science graduate of Texas Tech, is a member of the 4-H Foundation Board. He was instrumental in having the 2012 Roundup moved from College Station to Lubbock.

“I’ve been going to Roundup for a number of years for board meetings and we (board members) are encouraged to stay for Roundup activities after our meeting is adjourned,” says Ligon. “I kept hearing from people from West Texas who said they’d love to send more kids but there wasn’t enough money in the budget.”

This bothered Ligon, who felt Roundup needed to be accessible to all 4-H members, regardless of where in Texas they lived.

“The obvious answer was alternating sites,” says Ligon, who was key in putting together the proposal to 4-H administration to share the venue for Roundup. “We don’t have approval to alternate sites every year yet, but we’re hopeful that the success of the 2012 Roundup will ensure it is held in Lubbock every other year.”

Another benefit for Tech and participating universities is exposure to their schools. For the 65 years that Texas 4-H Roundup was held in College Station, it served as a perfect platform for recruiting. Thousands of kids experience their first taste of college life while visiting College Station each summer, and because of that, many Roundup participants choose to attend A&M. And that’s OK, because A&M is a great school, but so is Texas Tech and the other schools that partnered to bring Roundup to West Texas: South Plains College in Levelland; Angelo State University; West Texas A&M in Canyon; and Clarendon College in Clarendon.

David Waggoner ’83, who received a double major in animal science and animal production, is an attorney with his own law firm in Hillsboro.

He is a board member on the Texas 4-H Foundation and is the president of the Texas Tech Alumni Association for 2012. He is proud to have been a part of the effort to have 2012 Roundup in Lubbock.

“Hosting RoundUp in Lubbock will provide the West Texas region the opportunity to showcase its outstanding hospitality and top-notch facilities by which to host such a large event," he says. "The potential benefits for TTU are many. Obviously, one of the primary benefits is to expose students and parents to Lubbock and the Tech campus who may otherwise never have traveled to the area. I am convinced they (attendees) were impressed by the beauty of campus, and by the diverse, fun activities provided by Texas Tech.”

ince 2008, Texas Tech University has had a political action committee—more commonly known as a PAC. Carey Hobbs of Waco, Texas, a Texas Tech alumnus and former Texas Tech regent with a strong background in politics, started the Texas Tech Alumni and Friends Political Action Committee to ensure that the university is represented when decisions are being made in the state legislature with regard to higher education. The PAC makes an effort to solicit financial gifts in order to make contributions to various legislators who have been supportive of higher education.

The committee makes decisions about who receives the gifts and how much they are.

This effort is completely separate from the Texas Tech Alumni Association, as is required by law. The individuals involved in this effort act independently from the Alumni Association and the university.

“A PAC is a group of people with similar ideas or goals that want to get together and join forces and influence the decision-makers,” Hobbs says. “As money becomes tighter and tighter in the state budget, higher education has to organize and affect the decision-makers. Our goal

is to enhance higher education. As we do this, we would like for Texas Tech to be at the table, and as they make these decisions, the PAC will have a say in them.”

So far, about 50 people have contributed funds toward Tech’s PAC. “Each legislative session, there are things we are more interested in than others,” Hobbs continues.

“We’re very interested now in the Tier One status and how they are going to determine this and the metrics by which they’ll measure it. We want to make sure that we’re there to get our part.”

He adds that both the University of Texas and Texas A&M have PACs. Although each school’s PAC represents its own interests, they also stand to influence the legislature about funding higher education in general.

“The importance of public higher education cannot be overstressed, and having the support of the Texas Tech Alumni and Friends Political Action Committee is a tremendous help,” says Texas Tech Chancellor Kent Hance. “Thank you to the alumni and friends who have taken the initiative to establish this influential group.

Tennis at Texas Tech

Under the direction of fourth-year head coach Todd Petty, the Lady Raiders have joined the fold. Petty’s gradual impact broke the glass ceiling in 2012, as the Lady Raiders set record after record en route to a Top 25 national ranking, a Big 12 Conference title and a trip to the NCAA Championships.

For the men, Tim Siegel has engineered another solid season. The Red Raiders were on the outside looking in midway through the season, but Siegel engineered a second half surge that led to a second place finish in the Big 12 Conference and the school’s first-ever No. 2 seed in the Big 12 Championships.

“You look at what Todd has done in such a short amount of time and you realize what an amazing job he has done,” Siegel said. “It is an exciting time for Texas Tech Tennis.”

The Lady Raider Success

The season began for the Texas Tech Lady Raiders with its highest preseason ranking ever—No. 46. As the season started to unfold, confidence was in the air.

It was never more present than when the Lady Raiders toppled then-No. 23 Ole Miss, 4-3, at the Lubbock Country Club.

“If you ask me when I knew this was going to be a special season, I would have to say when we beat Ole Miss,” Petty said.

“It was at that point, I saw that the ladies had confidence in themselves that we could play with the best.”

The win over Ole Miss helped Texas Tech put together a string of 10 victories in 11 matches, including a 4-3 win over No. 12 Baylor at the McLeod Tennis Center to open Big 12 play.

The Bears were picked to win the Big 12 in the preseason poll.

The Lady Raiders fell just short of upending No. 21 Notre Dame, falling 4-3, but turned that loss into a string of five straight wins in conference play and put Texas Tech in the driver’s seat for the league crown.

In a battle for first place, the Lady Raiders dropped a hardfought match to No. 13 Texas before closing out the season with wins over Missouri and Iowa State to clinch the school’s first-ever Big 12 Conference women’s tennis title.

Texas Tech advanced to the Big 12 Championship semifinals for the first time ever and received the school’s first-ever bid to the NCAA Championships. The Lady Raiders finished the season 19-6 overall and 8-1 in Big 12 play. They also saw its ranking climb as high as No. 17 nationally before closing out as the No. 21 team in the nation. The 19 wins are the most in 25 years at Texas Tech.

Individually, it was a banner year for Texas Tech, as four different players reached 20 wins in the same season for the first time since 1988—Samantha Adams, Kenna Kilgo, Nikki

Sanders and Caroline Starck. The doubles play was equally as impressive, as Adams and Kilgo became the highest rated duo in school history at No. 19 and earned a spot at the NCAA Individual Doubles Championships. The duo of Elizabeth Ullathorne and Rashmi Teltumbde won 88 percent of their doubles matches (22-3), becoming the winningest spring tandem in school annals.

When the awards were handed out, Adams, Starck and Ullathorne were named Academic All-Big 12, while Adams and Kilgo earned All-Big 12 doubles honors, becoming the ninth Texas Tech tandem to earn the award.

Petty was named the Big 12 Coach of the Year for the second straight season. Petty joins former Texas A&M coach Bobby Kleinecke and Baylor’s Joey Scrivano as the only coaches in league history to win the award in consecutive years.

Petty was also honored as the first Texas Tech women’s coach to be named ITA Texas Region Coach of the Year, while Adams was named the 2013 ITA Texas Region Player to Watch.

Another Strong Showing for Men's Tennis Red Raiders earned their fourth Top 25 season in five years and continued a string of 20 consecutive seasons ranked in the ITA Poll in 2012.

Led by a trio of seniors — Raony Carvalho, Gonzalo Escobar and Rafael Garcia — the Red Raiders turned an 8-6 season into a 16-9 year for Texas Tech.

“We had a good year, and it would have not been what it was if it wasn’t for our three seniors,” said Siegel. “They have meant so much to this program for so long, they are going to be missed.”

Playing one of the toughest schedules in the nation, the Red Raiders went 9-9 against ranked foes. But more impressively, for the first time in school history, Texas Tech completed the sweep of Baylor, Texas A&M and Texas in the same season. The team’s only loss in Big 12 play came against eventual league champion Oklahoma.

The efforts of the Red Raiders led to the team earning its 12th overall and sixth straight selection to the NCAA Championships. Texas Tech dropped Cal Poly in the first round, before falling in a heartbreaker to host California, 4-3, in the ATTENTION: Texas Tech Alumni Association Members second round.

T he N orthe a st Ta rr a nt County Chapter of the Texas Tech Alumni Association held a scholarship fundraiser at the Winewood Grill in Grapevine, Texas, in April. A silent auction raised $3,000 for the chapter scholarship fund.

At the event, Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt gave a sports update. The Winewood Grill donated appetizers and gift cards for both Winewood and Mi Dia restaurants. Terry and Linda Fuller, who is a member of the Texas Tech Alumni Association National Board, provided autographed Texas Tech items for the auction.

Winewood and Mi Dia are two of many restaurants developed by Texas Tech alumnus Steve Hartnett. Hartnett was the driving force behind many successful restaurant chains including Fox & Hound, Cool River Café and Flips Patio Grill. He lost his battle with cancer in November 2011.

According to Peggy Maxwell, a member of the Texas Tech Alumni Association National Board who helped organize the event, Hartnett was a loyal Red Raider who gave back to his alma mater, especially to the Rawls College of Business Administration.

This event is just one of many our chapters across the country hold each year. We enjoy hearing about what chapters are doing.

T ex a s T e c h Alumni Association and the Student Alumni Board hosted the twice-annual Beer & Burgers on April 2. The event was sponsored by Southwest Airlines, which also provided Southwest Airlines tickets for the night's big winner.

During the two-hour event, held at the Frazier Alumni Pavilion, more than 400 students with current student IDs were given free hamburgers. Those with proper age identification were allowed to have two free beers.

Guests entered a raffle for five free memberships in the Texas Tech Alumni Association and a variety of other gifts. The Southwest Airlines tickets winner was Cameron Guthrie. Other raffle winners took home giftcards in various amounts from Fuddruckers, Chipotle, iTunes, Raising Canes, Spoonfull Yogurt and Subway.

Robert Martin “Bob” Arnold Jr. (BS Chemistry) Friendswood, Texas, has written a book, “First in Texas,” which chronicles the lives of three Texans during more than 150 years of Texas history. time in school history, Texas Tech University’s Department of Animal and Food Sciences sent two students to compete in May at the National Intercollegiate Horse Show Association’s (IHSA) national championship in Raleigh, N.C. At the zone competition recently held in Indiana, Haley Aydam was crowned Champion Open Equitation Over Fences and qualified to compete at the national event. She is the first English rider to ever advance to nationals from Texas Tech. Her teammate, Tobie Montelbano , also qualified. He was the Reserve Champion Reiner and will be representing Texas Tech in the Reining Division at the national contest.

In IHSA competition, the rider draws for their mount before each class and is not allowed to practice or warm up on the given mount.

Andrew Nepsund , a junior, is one of two students chosen to share $15,000 in Texas Associated Press Broadcasters (TAPB) scholarships.

The TAPB board voted recently to give $10,000 to Nepsund, who is double majoring in broadcast journalism and history.

Texas Tech University graduate students won the seventh annual Texas Shoot-Out MBA Challenge for the first time in school history last spring in Dallas.

The event, hosted by the North Texas Chapter of the Commercial Real Estate Development Association (NAIOP), is open to registered graduate students from Texas universities.

Nine days prior to the competition, the students were assigned a case involving the Reunion/Union Station site in downtown Dallas. They had to analyze the facts, determine a solution of how best to redevelop that site and present the solution to the NAIOP judges in a 20-minute PowerPoint program.

The Texas Tech team won $5,000 for finishing first, defeating the University of Texas, which placed second. Other schools in the competition included Texas A&M, Rice, University of Texas at Arlington, University of Texas at Dallas, Southern Methodist University and Texas Christian University.

Taylor, who is pursuing a law degree from the Texas Tech University School of Law, becomes the seventh student to serve on the Board of Regents. Her one-year term begins June 1.

A native of Arlington, Texas, she is a second-year law student expected to graduate in May 2013. Aside from her studies, Taylor has taken part in the law school’s advocacy programs as well as secured internships and employment in the public sector.

Lackner will conduct research for a thesis chapter entitled, “Ecclesia et Sinagoga: Therapy for the Masses.”

Megan Williams recently was named Youth Volunteer of the Year at the Champions for Children Banquet in April at the Lubbock Country Club. She worked more than 90 hours at New Directions last fall. New Directions caters to teenage moms and their children.
