FIND YOUR PASSION IN THE 806 Adrian Lewis is taking Lubbock’s health and fitness scene to the next level with a passion for others and a game-winning business strategy. Born and raised in the “Hub City,” Adrian grew up surrounded by people who believed he would impact his community for good. What they didn’t know is the influence he would have on their lives a few made it my goal to always be decades later.

I ahead. It is Lubbock, so if you have the vision, you can make changes, create new things and always be the first.

His natural athletic talent and notable basketball skills took him to Clarendon Junior College, where he was a student athlete for two years followed by time spent in Houston.

But something was calling him home. His family, specifically his great-grandmother, was a key motivator in his decision to return to Lubbock. It is her who gave him the drive and motivation to be successful in and for his community.

With a personal mission to make people excited about working out and COVID-19 at its peak, Adrian knew he needed to create a program that enabled and encouraged his community to look forward to moving their

bodies. Creating Live25 Fitness allowed him to do just that.

What was once a class of 25 has now grown into over 150 individuals from across the city who meet Monday nights for step class.

Adrian knows he wouldn’t be where he is today without the support of the Lubbock community. A city of over 260,000, Lubbock’s humble West Texas culture fuels local support. This creates more opportunities for those wanting to start a business.

“I made it my goal to always be ahead. It is Lubbock, so if you have the vision, you can make changes, create new things and always be the first,” he said.

He describes his career as a full-circle moment. Returning to Lubbock has proven to him to be a great location to raise his family.

With a slower pace of life, the challenge of a larger city remains in his rearview mirror.

For now, Adrian enjoys changing lives and providing a positive impact on those who helped shape him into the man, leader, and visionary he is today.

A LEGACY THAT KEEPS ON GIVING… AS THE CALENDAR MOVES CLOSER TO OUR CENTENNIAL YEAR OF 2023, TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY CONTINUES TO CLOSE OUT ITS FIRST CENTURY WITH A CRESCENDO. Whether being a

legacy or a first-generation graduate, we’re all part of the proud community of alumni who have attended this great institution. I couldn’t be more excited about our university and our heritage as we approach this major milestone.

Because the mission of our alumni association is to support our university’s continued academic success, our members are more inclined than ever to appreciate and support these pursuits. Texas Tech has been designated again as a Carnegie Tier One Research University, strengthening its stature among all universities. Boasting north of 40,000 students, Tech enrollment remains robust as one of the few institutions nationally that registered gains despite the pandemic. Our athletic programs continue to make us stand tall by being highly competitive at a national level.

It was exciting to meet up with a large contingent of alumni in Memphis for the Liberty Bowl, resulting in a pivotal win for the Red Raider football program. We’re extremely proud of all our coaches and how well they reflect on our alma mater, with many of them Red Raider alumni themselves.

Texas Tech’s recent basketball wins over a big rival here in Lubbock and in Austin were vindicating. Tech’s impressive presence at The Drum in Austin was a testament to our immense pride in our university. No doubt, our beloved traditions and our national brand are stronger than ever.

Our recruiting Raider Roadshows have resumed this spring, taking the Texas Tech story to metropolitan regions throughout the state. I have attended these events in San Antonio, Austin and Irving. It’s inspiring how many prospective students and their parents take a close look at Texas Tech, often having never visited Lubbock. Roadshows are highly successful initiatives (also held in Houston, El Paso and the Rio Grande Valley) that have helped drive our growing university enrollment. Because of our strong membership, the TTAA can help fund and can also provide volunteers at these events. This project is in keeping with our mission of academic support above and beyond scholarships. Thank you to Vice President of Enrollment Management Jamie Hansard and her committed team, who routinely pack up our storied campus and take it on tour throughout Texas.

Texas Tech University is one of only 16 institutions in the country that are both a Tier One Research University and a Hispanic Serving Institution with 42 percent of our students coming from diverse backgrounds.

Scholarships and financial assistance are important components in the enrollment of students and is a major focus for TTU administration.

Scholarships have increased by more than $8 million in the last year, with TTU awarding more than $170 million in overall aid. Fifty percent of our students receive scholarship support. This fact is one of the reasons Forbes ranks Texas Tech as a Best Value College and among the top 3 percent of the universities in the world for return on investment. We want to continue to support the university in scholarship assistance.

Telling our story into the next century is our focus, and having additional TTAA members will help us achieve even more in providing academic support. I have often wondered what it would look like if our current contributors were all seated in Jones AT&T Stadium. With 27,080 members at the end of 2021, we are close to filling it to half its capacity and still growing. Remember, this number reflects annual membership,

yours included. If everyone renewed every year over the last three years alone, we would have fully packed The Jones! I should note we are already on the verge of filling the United Supermarkets Arena two times over.

So where do we go from here? Texas Tech University President Lawrence Schovanec has made it clear that the university’s go-forward focus is on student success (increasing student retention), recruiting first-generation students and providing student mentoring.

Expect the TTAA to become more intentional in supporting these specific directives. As an alumni association, we must also focus on boosting our Alumni Participation Rate (APR), one of the methods in which Texas Tech is benchmarked compared to similar institutions nationally. Our current rate is roughly 10 percent, slightly above the national average, but we know we can do better.

Because of this APR emphasis, we will begin encouraging alumni who have never contributed to consider making at least a smaller gift. Even the smallest of contributions count equally to larger gifts toward the overall percentage of engaged degreed alumni. By including any and all contributors, the result is a larger body of participating alumni, particularly among our more recent grads.

Texas Tech awareness is as strong as it’s ever been, and the value of our degrees is on the climb. I’ve often said the strength of an institution is only as strong as the combined support of its alumni. The recent transformational gift from Gordon W. Davis, Ph.D., and his wife Joyce - featured in this issue - is simply the latest and largest example of Red Raiders who generously give back to Texas Tech. Large or small, every gift collectively counts toward the betterment of our great university.

Thank you for your continued investment in our next generation of Techsans and in our overall alumni community.

What an inspirational legacy it is to be part of these first 100 years.

NEWS MICHAEL S. MOLINA, AIA, ’ 9 1 , WA S N A M E D T H E T E X A S TECH UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE 2021 DISTINGUISHED ALUMNUS.

Molina is currently the associate vice president of facilities planning and management and university architect at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. He previously served Molina as vice chancellor of Facilities, Planning & Construction for the Texas Tech University System and, prior to that, vice president of facilities, design and development for United Supermarkets in Lubbock. In addition to his accomplishments in delivering $4.7 billion commercial and institutional facilities, his leadership and initiatives — notably from the client side of the table — have advanced the causes of sustainable design, energy conservation, historic preservation and customer-focused retailing. Most recently, he spearheaded SMU’s institutional responses to the global pandemic of 2020 and the devastating winter storm of 2021.

TOSHA DUPRAS, PH.D. HAS BEEN NAMED DEAN OF TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY’S COLLEGE OF ARTS & SCIENCES.

Dupras has served as senior associate dean of the University of Central Florida’s College of Sciences since October and as a professor in the Department of Anthropology since 2015. She previously served as interim dean of the college and department chair. Dupras has been at the University of Central Florida since 1999.

Prior to that, she spent one year as a visiting instructor at the University of Calgary.

Her primary research focus is the reconstruction of life history, particularly diet, migration, disease and growth and development, through the analysis of stable isotopes and paleopathology.

ON DEC. 15, 2021, TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY BROKE GROUND ON A NEW ACADEMIC SCIENCE BUILDING THAT WILL HOUSE TEACHING AND LABORATORY SPACE FOR FIVE DEPARTMENTS WITHIN THE COLLEGE OF ARTS & SCIENCES: Biological Sciences, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Geosciences, Physics & Astronomy and Psychological Sciences. The $100 million, 125,000-square-foot facility will contain hands-on active learning classrooms, student collaboration spaces, first-class teaching and computer laboratories, faculty offices and research facilities. Consistent with the Spanish Renaissance aesthetic that characterizes most of Texas Tech’s campus, building materials will include Mission Blend brick, cast stone details and terracotta-tiled roofing.

Planned external features include a pedestrian walkway and a courtyard to the east of the building. Construction is expected to continue through December 2023.The new addition will be located adjacent to the current Chemistry and Science Buildings.

TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY’S FALL COMMENCEMENT WAS HELD DEC. 10 AND DEC. 11.

A total of 2,731 undergraduate and graduate students walked the stage.

THE CARNEGIE CLASSIFICATION OF INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER EDUCATION HAS ONCE AGAIN CLASSIFIED TEXAS TECH AS A TIER ONE RESEARCH UNIVERSITY FOR 2021. Texas Tech was first recognized in 2015 and has continued to build a reputation as a top research university worldwide. A major factor in the classification is the number of doctorates awarded. During the 2020-21 fiscal year, Texas Tech awarded 382 doctoral degrees across its 13 academic concentrations, placing it in the top 15% in the nation.

The two-phase project will gather valuable data on the performance of small size turbines under varying conditions.

Phase One will place several turbines at the Reese Technology Center in Lubbock, Texas. Phase Two will investigate sources of grant funding for microgrids and other energy exploits.

This partnership will allow GLEAMM to work with researchers and private businesses to improve the electric grid and understand how renewable energy can be integrated.

SPORTS CODY CAMPBELL, A TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY BOARD OF REGENTS MEMBER AND A FORMER FOOTBALL LETTERWINNER, HAS DONATED $25 MILLION FOR RENOVATIONS TO THE SOUTH END ZONE OF JONES AT&T STADIUM.

The field, inside Jones AT&T Stadium, will be renamed “Cody Campbell Field,” in honor of the largest one-time contribution in history to the athletics department.

Campbell is a fourth generation Red Raider who earned multiple All-Big 12 and Academic All-Big 12 honors during his time playing as an offensive lineman for Tech.

The university is currently in the design stage of the south end zone project and has not yet finalized a concept or budget. The south end zone will be the final project in Tech’s closing stages of “The Campaign for Fearless Champions.”

first bowl game appearance since 2017. The win marked the first bowl victory for Tech’s football program since 2013. Sonny Cumbie, now the head coach at Louisiana Tech, held Mississippi State to its lowest point total of the season. More than 48,000 fans attended the game to cheer on the teams. Texas Tech finished the season with a 7-6 record.

Texas Tech defeated Mississippi State 34-7 COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER HAS RANKED TEXAS TECH FOURTH OVERALL IN THE PRESEASON BASEBALL POLL. Tech has been ranked in the top five every year since 2018.

Despite losing nine players to the MLB Draft earlier this year, the roster is very promising with 22 players returning from a 2021 team that finished as high as No. 11 in the final rankings last season. The Red Raiders also advanced as a national seed to the Super Regionals in 2021 and had the second-most Major League Baseball Draft selections of any team in the country this past summer. The 2022 home season-opener was against No. 32 Dallas Baptist on Feb. 22.

TEXAS TECH VOLLEYBALL REACHED THE NCAA TOURNAMENT FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 20 SEASONS. The last team to compete in the tournament

was in 2001 where they lost in the first round.

The 2021 team fell to a similar fate and lost in the first round to Florida Gulf Coast University in five sets. Tech pulled away with an early lead by winning the first two games, but FGCU swept the last three games to defeat the Red Raiders.

The men’s basketball team has had a lot to celebrate this season.

TEXAS TECH MEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM DEFEATED THE NO. 1 RANKED BAYLOR TEAM ON JAN. 11 IN WACO, TEXAS. The win ended a 21-game

winning streak for Baylor and took out the remaining unbeaten team in the country. The upset victory matched the second-biggest comeback on the road to beat an AP No. 1 team in the past 20 years.

Since ancient times, people have created and worn jewelry.

The first pieces were made from readily available natural elements such as animal bones and teeth, feathers and even leaves. Eventually, the pieces included metals and found stones.

Dawna Gillespie is a metalsmith and jewelry artist whose work is inspired by her soul. She designs extraordinary and distinctive statement pieces — wearable artworks with a message, as well as expressive ornaments for the home. Each piece she creates is one-of-a-kind, never-duplicated and holds special meaning for her. Her adornments are classified as fine craft, as they are hand-fabricated from copper and brass using a jeweler’s saw.

“Throughout my life and experiences, I’ve learned we need to guard our hearts,” she says. “I view my art as kind of a shield covering the heart and soul. My work is based on both joys and trials and tribulations in my life. I want to translate experiences into something beautiful to give back to the world.”

The shapes and motifs that she uses represent different aspects of her life.

She uses a sequence of lines, rounded edges, open spaces and overlapping elements — all left to interpretation but perhaps representing relationships, emotions, movement and change, all at the same time. They also have a decidedly feminine feel — beautiful and strong.

Just like the artist, her works are authentically original. They represent her passion for her art.

“The overall theme of my work is life,” Gillespie says.“My pieces are both introspective and retrospective. One important influence is my relationship with my husband.”

Gillespie was a high school senior when she met her future husband, Robert Gillespie, on a blind date. It was at a high school football game between their rival schools, her Valley High School Patriots from Turkey, Texas, and his Matador High School Matadors. The two became inseparable and married five years later.

“Robert and his entire family are all Red Raiders, so they definitely influenced me to go to Texas Tech, especially since I was a first- generation college student,” Gillespie says. “Robert has both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in agricultural and applied economics (2004 and 2006, respectively).

He is a manager of Wylie Implement and handles the company’s guidance system inventory, among many other responsibilities, for a 250-mile radius in West Texas.”

Another tremendous influence on her designs is the couple’s sevenyear-old son, Calder.

“We’re raising our son to be independent. I want him to know that the one thing that he has that nobody else has is him — his voice, his mind, his story, his vision. We want him to observe and learn, so we don’t allow him to have electronics such as an iPad or phone at this age. We want him engaged in the world around him and to ask lots of questions. We don’t want him to feel he has to go with the crowd.

“My son is a huge driving force for me. I want to leave him a legacy of individuality, craftsmanship, reverence for craft and giving something back that has meaning.”

These objects may also represent family traditions. Perhaps a piece communicates one’s beliefs or affiliations. Some may signify power, wealth or position. Of course, people most often wear jewelry or place an object in their personal spaces because of its beauty or other appeal.

As with most artists, the creative process is as important as the finished adornment. Being true to herself is vital to Gillespie.

“The process is why I create; it is where my soul comes to life for others to enjoy,” she says.

All of Gillespie’s work is done by hand — no machinery or automation for her. After she cuts the metal shapes that she fashions into works of art, she files every shape so it is smooth enough to adorn the body. Then, the artist hand draws designs onto the metal for the next process, etching. This step adds a lot of texture to her work.

Once she is finished sawing, filing and etching, the metalsmith places the individual shapes in a container and covers them with dirt, leaves and an ammonia/rock salt mixture. These elements remain on top of the pieces for several hours to kick start the natural oxidation in copper so that it acquires a beautiful verdigris patina.

“I only use copper, brass and velvet in my pieces,” she says.“I like the way these elements age and weather. The metal’s oxidation and patina process ties in with what human bodies go through naturally. Both become more beautiful as they age.”

Afterward, Dawna takes the completed individual shapes and arranges them to form the adornment. Lastly, she cold-connects all the shapes with hand fabricated rivets. She mentions that she may spend 20-80 hours on an adornment before it is completed.

“There are times after I finish a piece that my arms are sore from the work,” she says.

That hard-earned pain represents the painstaking process the artist uses to ensure the sensational craftsmanship. The exquisite detail is one aspect of Gillespie’s artwork that has gained her a following. She has collectors and fans all over the country.

“Dawna is just fabulous,” says Kelli Phillips, who co-hosts the popular TV show ‘Texas Country Reporter’ with her husband, Bob Phillips. “She wouldn’t be her without her jewelry — it fuels her.”

After Dawna designs each adornment, she then begins the hand fabrication process by sawing out each shape using a jeweler’s saw.

The exquisite detail is one aspect of Gillespie’s pieces that has gained her a following. She has collectors and fans all over the country.

Gillespie was featured in a 2020 segment of the show called “Let the Copper Dust Fly.” “Her work is very special because it is all done by hand,” Phillips adds.“There are no machines going in her studio. She cuts all the metal with a little hand saw and files it by hand.

“We just love Dawna. She is one of our TCR Family, people who have shared their stories on the show.”

Each year for 25 years, “Texas Country Reporter” has hosted the annual one-day TCR Festival at the Waxahachie City Square. It features members of the TCR Family who offer their handmade, one-of-a-kind, juried wares to the public. Dawna has been part of that event, which hosts 300 artisans and vendors and 50,000 to 60,000 guests.

After her “Texas Country Reporter” episode aired, Wabi Sabi, a gallery in Glen Rose, Texas, reached out to Gillespie.

They represented the artist and her entire collection for 2021.

Furthermore, Gillespie’s adornments have been exhibited at various galleries in Missouri, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and many other places.

Along with these accolades, she was also featured in Belle Armoire Jewelry, a national magazine, as the Winter 2019 “Designer Collection” with a 10-page spread. After that publication’s release, Texas Hill Country Magazine featured Gillespie in a three-page spread article.

“24 Frames,” a PBS TV series produced by Texas Tech Public Media, featured Gillespie and her adornments as well.

Another huge nod to her work was being waitlisted for the Smithsonian Craft Show, the most prestigious fine craft exhibition in the country, the first year she applied.

Immediately after she received that news, the pandemic hit, so show plans were sidelined.

Gillespie’s love for creative expression began very early in her childhood.

“I was always dabbling in art and even got in trouble for it sometimes when I drew on something I shouldn’t have,” she says. “As I got older, I kept drawing and creating. At one point, I took 60 hours in painting courses at Dodge City Community College (Kansas).

“I started attending Texas Tech when I was 26 and graduated at 28 with a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts degree in Visual Studies and a Texas Certification for K-12 Art (2013). I soon realized I had a purpose and passion beyond the classroom.

“I ended up taking one class in metalsmithing at Texas Tech my last semester. There was something that I just connected with when I worked with the metal. I knew it was something I wanted to pursue, so I did.”

That experience was enough to light a fire in her. A new passion was born. She began teaching herself how to work with metal.

Recently, Gillespie has established an exclusive relationship with high-end Lubbock boutique Hulla B’Lu to sell her jewelry and adornments in store. The eclectic shop sells a curated selection of women’s clothing and accessories, home decor and children’s items.

“Dawna’s work is totally beautiful,” says shop owner Karla Hope, who has an art degree from Angelo State University.“When she walked in the door, I was impressed by her work and the style of her work, which is all by hand. I think it is cool that a local artist would sell her work here, and I want to support her in the community. Dawna is very talented.”

Gillespie’s work is proof that art is not just visual — below the beautiful and interesting surfaces are emotions, experiences and beliefs.

Art involves more than what meets the eye — it represents the creator and that person’s life.

Joyce ’76 and Gordon Davis, Ph.D., were the stars of the show Wed., Jan. 19, 2022, when their $44 million gift — the largest gift in Texas Tech history — was announced. The historic Dairy Barn on campus was filled beyond capacity, with an overflow crowd listening via speakers.

The gathering of friends and fellow Red Raiders was electric — this wasn’t just a big deal; it was a giant deal in every sense of the word.

The Davises aren’t strangers to large financial contributions. They’ve elected to also donate generously to Gordon’s alma maters Washington State University and Texas A&M University, as well as West Texas A&M University, Sam Houston State University and Colorado State University. They’ve endowed multiple professorships and scholarships, too.

At Texas Tech, in the past, they’ve given more than $1.5 million to the meat science program within the Davis College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources (those familiar with campus have seen the Gordon W. Davis Meat Science Laboratory). They both love sports and have also donated more than $1 million to the Texas Tech football, baseball and women’s soccer programs over the past 16 years.

In December 2021, when Gordon sold his company, iCEV, to The Riverside Company, a global investment firm, he and Joyce realized a windfall that gave them another opportunity to make a difference.

When you know even a little about Joyce and Gordon’s backgrounds, it’s not tough to figure out why they chose to make such a substantial gift to the university’s agriculture college. They both really “get” agriculture.

Anyone who knows Gordon has heard him say, “It’s all about the kids.” For him, though, it’s that and more. He and Joyce are well acquainted with what sets apart many of the students in the Davis College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources. A fair number grew up in rural areas and, regardless of where they grew up, most participated in 4-H and FFA. They raised and showed animals, learning to take care of something other than themselves. They participated in judging and leadership competitions that meant arriving at school by 6:30, staying late and countless days of travel. When these kids arrive at Texas Tech, they arrive prepared by their parents, ag teachers and county agents to continue their own pursuit of excellence. And when they leave, the Davises want to ensure they’re prepared to lead in the world of agriculture.

“The kids Tech puts out from the College of Ag are the best there is,” says Gordon.

When he was creating a memorandum of understanding (MOU) regarding the gift he and Joyce planned to give, he had many conversations with President Lawrence Schovanec. When Schovanec was headed to meet with the university regents about the prospective gift, he asked Gordon, “Do you have anything you’d like me to say to them?”

“I said,‘Yes. Agriculture is a sleeping giant. It never gets the respect it deserves,’” Gordon says.“It seems like it’s always an underdog. I found out that, if you count food manufacturing, agriculture is the No. 1 industry nationally. Yes, an ‘understated underdog,’ but with alumni, faculty, students — all stakeholders headed in the same direction — that is about to change.”

If you spend much time around Gordon, and it doesn’t have to be much, you’ll hear him talk about the pursuit of excellence. This saying has really guided his path in the world. When we produced the book about CEV, he provided me a list titled: Over 25 Years We Have Learned. It was a list of 17 catchy sayings that were sort of an outline for how he does business and works with people.

A couple I remember well are: “It’s never so bad that it can’t be worse”; “It’s okay to have fun”; and “Something magical happens once an idea is put on paper.”

The idea-to-paper thing is one he’s used every time he sets a goal, and I think he has accomplished every goal he’s set. He’s been creating a lofty list of goals for the Davis College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources.

“I’ve never been a part of a plan, a long-range plan, that didn’t work,” Gordon says.“Every single one of them has worked — all 15 plans.”

Gordon and Schovanec have built not only a professional relationship, but also a friendship.

Finding similarities, one of which is that they both grew up on dairy farms. They see eye-to-eye on the future for not just the Davis College, but the entirety of Texas Tech.

“This gift is significant for a number of reasons,” Schovanec says. “Of course, it has historical significance in terms of being the largest single gift and contribution to Texas Tech, but more than historical significance, the gift makes such a statement about Gordon and his visions and aspirations for Davis College and the university. Its reach will touch so many areas as it relates to students and research and stature of the university. I think it’s only the beginning of such a process that will extend far into the future.”

EDITOR’S NOTE: I’ve known G.W. Davis, Ph.D., for close to 30 years. I first met him when I was an undergraduate participating in the meat science program at Tech. When my husband was still an ag teacher, I’d see Gordon at least every summer at the Texas ag teachers’ conference when he sponsored the beer kegs at the raucous Texas Tech parties. I featured him in the Texas Techsan in 2006 (look for the QR code at the end of this story).

Gordon subsequently hired me to write his family history book, which I titled “American Spirit.” He later hired me to write about CEV. I titled that book, “Risk & Reward — CEV: A 25-Year Retrospective.” We got to know each other well, I was fortunate to get to know his amazing mom, Gladys, before her passing. I also got to know his kind and patient wife, Joyce, their three children and countless employees of CEV. What I learned about Gordon, who always told me to call him Gordo or G.W. or Gordon, never “doctor,” is that he expects a lot out of people. A lot. He pushes. He pokes.

He squeezes, so much so that often he creates discomfort. But, in the end, there’s always an amazing product.

And as hard as he works, the flipside is, he loves to play just as hard. He is fun and funny and caring and a blast to be around. I’m honored to include another story that features not only Gordon, but also his wife Joyce, who, although she prefers to not take center stage, is as much a part of this gift as her husband. She’s the quiet, contemplative half to his boisterous half. A perfect fit.

GORDON Gordon — also known as Dr. Davis, G.W. or Gordo — has deep roots in Washington state. His great-grandparents, Cashup and Mary Ann Davis, settled there in 1870 and owned a number of successful businesses. Cashup was relentless, chasing his dreams up to his death in 1896. Gordon, his older brother and their younger sister, grew up on a family dairy in Deer Park, Washington. His parents were extremely hard workers, as you have to be in order to make a dairy succeed, and that rubbed off on Gordon. For 13 years, Gordon observed and helped his dad and mom build up a rundown 80-acre dairy farm to 240 acres (cleared 110 acres from timber). The Davises were selected the Dairy Family of the Year for Washington in 1964. Gordon had the golden opportunity to observe the “pursuit of excellence” on that farm from 1951 to 1964.

The family was mostly self-sufficient. Of course, since they owned a dairy, they had plentiful milk, cream and butter. They also grew their own grain to feed livestock. They had steers and hogs for meat — they’d go through two steers (about 400 pounds of meat from each steer) and a couple of hogs each year. They also raised chickens for eggs and meat. They had their own garden.

Gordon’s mother, Gladys, canned 300 quarts of fruits and vegetables every summer – she was a “Super Star” mom and dairy farmer’s wife.

When Gladys was still alive, she once told me that,“…Gordon’s first exposure to meat science was carefully watching Al (the local butcher) slaughter our farm raised steers in the 1950s.”

Competitive from a young age, Gordon excelled in various leadership events, showing dairy cattle and later in judging competitions in 4-H and FFA. He earned two undergraduate degrees from Washington State University in 1968, where he also competed on the dairy judging, livestock judging and finally meat judging teams. He taught high school agriculture for four years, 1968-1972, in Lake Stevens, Washington, before moving on to earn his master’s and doctoral degrees from Texas A&M. He was on faculty at University of Tennessee before moving on to Texas Tech in 1980. By 1989, he coached Tech’s meat judging team to its first national championship in the program’s 51-year history. Since 1990, under the leadership of his former student, Mark Miller, Ph.D., Tech has won 15 more national championships, now only three behind Oklahoma State University, which has 19 since the inception of meat judging in 1926.

During his tenure at Texas Tech, in 1984, Gordon started CEV Multimedia.

By 1990 he made the leap of quitting his professorship and leading CEV on a full-time basis.

JOYCE

Joyce is the middle of three sisters. Although she was born in Texas, her father’s job as a computer mathematician with Shell Oil Co. meant her family moved around the United States every three years. Ultimately, they landed in Plano, Texas, when Joyce was in junior high.

Her father’s parents lived on a farm about an hour from Plano.

“The farm had a 25-acre lake,” Joyce says.“After we’d moved back (to Texas), my dad told my sisters and me, ‘We can either get a boat or get horses.’ We all wanted horses…

We’d spend lots of weekends up there riding horses, my dad helped with the farm. It made it wonderful to be back in Texas. I had always wanted a horse — I’d wish on my birthday candles for a horse.”

She still recalls the names of her horses: Joe Festus, Ace, Solomon and Major. Perhaps her love of horses unwittingly drew her to Texas Tech, since a horse is our university’s most famous icon. She was in high school when she traveled to Lubbock with her best friend. The friend’s father had a business trip in the Hub City and the young women decided to tag along. The two planned a campus tour of Texas Tech. The visit sold Joyce on Tech. Today, Joyce gets the same pride and joy watching the Masked Rider charge the field on horseback at Jones AT&T Stadium – it’s hard to find a bigger Red Raider football fanatic.

She initially planned to major in social work, but with a little nudging from her father, she pivoted and earned her bachelor’s degree in general business in 1976. Following graduation, she moved to Dallas, where she worked for a downtown bank for about a year.

After that year, she opted to return to Lubbock. She worked for Lubbock National Bank until her boss, Alan White, decided to break away and purchase, with investors, Plains National Bank in 1988. She stayed with PNB in various positions, including managing the first branch PNB opened, until she resigned in the early 2000s.

Her resignation allowed her to help out at iCEV. Joyce is humble and says she didn’t have a lot to do with iCEV, but Gordon disagrees.

“Joyce was along my side during the rise of CEV, especially with the key years of 2005, 2017, 2020 and 2021,” Gordon says.“And she stuck with me during the challenging days between April 2001 through October 2005.”

Stepping away from banking allowed Joyce more time to host friends and family at one of her favorites places, their home on Lake Brownwood that they’ve had for close to two decades. Aside from lake time, her two big loves are still horses and dogs. She is a supporter of Lubbock’s Rescue Animal’s Second Chance, a shelter for abandoned, abused, neglected and starving horses and dogs. She also has adopted multiple shelties—currently they have Nala, a blue merle shelty.

Joyce possesses a calm demeanor, a ready smile and a big heart. Perhaps her most endearing quality is how down-to-earth she is. When attending public events, you’ll see her classic style, but she jokes that her sense of style when she’s at the lake is something else entirely. Gordon jokes, when he got Joyce to say “yes” he out punted his coverage.

When we discussed the sale of iCEV, she brushed off the idea that their lives would become something other than what they’ve always been.

“We’re not changing our lifestyle,” Joyce says. “We don’t want to go build a great big new house or anything like that. I was quite happy the way we were living and we’re just continuing to live that way.”

A testament to her generous spirit, what she enjoys most is being able to make a difference with their gifts — and that is something that likely won’t ever change, either.

iCEV

Part of an ag teacher’s job — in addition to teaching class, supervising student-led projects and training FFA leadership teams to compete — is to train FFA judging teams. Gordon, as a former ag teacher and college coach, had an exceptional perspective on what was missing from the classroom: easy access to every cut of meat needed for a contest.

His idea was simple enough: create a tool that would provide ag teachers everywhere the ability to train stellar teams without the actual hanging meat. In the early 1980s, Gordon began by creating VHS tapes using his kitchen table at home to write some of the nation’s first video scripts for meat science topics, specifically beef grading, judging and meat retail cut identification. He proceeded to educate prospective viewers about the quality, cuts and cutability of the products.

From there he began to branch out but was solely devoted to agriscience production for the first eight years. The beginnings were, indeed, humble. Davis recalls he rented his first offices in 1985.

“It was on 50th Street and had 144-square feet,” Davis says.“The rent was $80 a month.”

As CEV grew, he moved offices a couple more times, finally landing in 1994 at the current offices on Southeast Loop 289, a 12,000-squarefoot structure.

Gordon’s new office holds a few of his treasures earned through the decades.

Gordon had his ear to the ground and was tied in with ag teachers.

He and CEV leaders brought in experts to “teach” and “train” via video, and some were at a world-class level. Ag teachers were thrilled to have access to experts from all over the United States, right in their classrooms.

Its original idea — to bring the expert to the classroom — worked from day one and still does.

Gordon had a vision and credits many amazing employees for the growth and success CEV experienced. As they created educational videos, they evolved, adding curriculum. Soon, CEV products were used in school districts nationwide as a replacement for textbooks. As the company moved steadily into digital formatting, its name was changed to iCEV in 2012. Since 1984, CEV has hired students and graduates across 19 departments at Tech; Gordon is grateful for their individual and collective contributions to CEV’s success from the very beginning.

Today iCEV offers curriculum for K-12 grades, higher education, continuing education and industry certifications. The iCEV platform features more than 2,000 lessons, including more than 600 hours of video-based instruction, across 16 career clusters, with 22,000 teachers and 1.3 million students subscribers.

Joyce and I would not have given this gift unless we liked the president and his wife, Patty; they are down to earth folks who love Tech like we do. Lawrence is a focused leader. He has already led us up to 40,000 students and contributed to the hiring of various terrific coaches with Kirby and his group. The hiring of Mark Adams and Joey McGuire is noteworthy. Davis College is in good hands; with Lawrence at the top, our best days are on the horizon. We are proud to be along for the ride as Tech keeps pursuing excellence in both academics and athletics.

Charles Perry, CPA Perry is a Texas State Senator (2014-present), owner of Charles Perry, PC, an accounting firm, and he served as a Texas Representative from 2010-2014.

Upon entering politics in 2010, Perry was introduced to Gordon.

He was invited to visit iCEV and followed its progress and expansion through the years.

“When you combine Gordon’s passion for agriculture, youth and his big personality, you have a winning ticket for Texas Tech and ag. Throughout the years, he and Joyce have invested their time and treasure to endow scholarships and support programs they are passionate for the next generation of agriculture. Their recent gift to the Davis College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources is transformational for Texas Tech and the future is even more exciting for our students and alumni.”

Robert Giovanetti Senior Associate Athletics Director / External Operations & Strategic Communications Robert first met Gordon in 1992 and served as president for CEV, leaving in 2000.

“I have always followed the College of Ag closely, including what Gordon was doing there (in the 1980s). He brought Texas Tech to national prominence with the meat judging team before he left to take up CEV full time.

I’ve always admired his ingenuity and innovative spirit and what he risked to get things done. And, no matter how great his success, he’s always put students first. He’s devoted not only money, but his energy and wisdom, toward ensuring students excel. The financial gift is great, but the individual efforts he has made toward young people is really significant.”

Robert Duncan Fourth Texas Tech University System Chancellor (2014-2018) Duncan served in the Texas Legislature for more than two decades, first as a member of the Texas House of Representatives and later in the Texas Senate. He was also a partner at the law firm Crenshaw, Dupree and Milam in Lubbock for more than 25 years.

Duncan met Gordon almost 30 years ago — he was a client at Crenshaw, Dupree and Milam.

“Gordon has inexhaustible energy. I think one thing, among many, that makes this gift special is level of involvement he’ll have in the Davis College and the university as a whole. The benefit with a donor like Gordon is that he shares more than just his wealth, he shares his vision and drive. He has no interest in mediocrity, he believes in striving for a higher level of excellence.”

Texas Tech University President (2016-present) Schovanec first met Gordon in 2020 at the Celebrate Agriculture football game. Subsequently, he visited the iCEV offices and has spent increasing amounts of time with him over the last year.

Kristina first met Gordon when she judged meat on the 2000 team. She worked for CEV in 2001, where she met and worked with Joyce as well.

The breakdown of Joyce and Gordon Davis’ $44 million gift is: $25 million endowment that will directly benefit the Davis College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources $4 million gift to establish the Gordon and Joyce Davis Endowment for Excellence in Meat & Food Sciences $15 million gift from the Gordon W. Davis Estate to benefit future educational efforts within the meat science and food science programs, and/or Davis College $500,000 to add to the Gordon W Davis regents chair endowment Gordon and the CEV executive team began looking at selling in early 2021.

He wanted three things from the company that purchased iCEV: integrity; that the company maintain its Lubbock headquarters and employees; and that the brand was retained and not merged with any other brands.

“The buyer, The Riverside Company, agreed to all three requirements, and to their credit, three months after the sale, zero surprises,” Gordon notes.“They intend to grow CEV in Lubbock threefold over the next five years, led by a four-person executive team, three of whom are Texas Tech graduates — all players.”

Riverside has invested in more than 80 education and training companies, including those specializing in pre-K, K-12, post-secondary education, corporate training and certifications.

The deal was closed Dec. 27, 2021, at 2:26 p.m. He says he has no regrets and the only thing he misses are his employees, who gave him a heartfelt standing ovation when he announced the sale of the company and his imminent departure. On Dec. 28, Gordon moved out of the offices he’d called home since 1994.

He’s now in an office in south-central Lubbock that’s big enough for Gordon and his newly hired “Chief of Stuff,” Matt Owens. Owens assists the Davises in managing various endowments they have established at multiple universities, running the operations of their family foundation and handling “stuff” that comes up along the way.

“Well, I don’t have a staff anymore,” says Gordon with a grin, a nod to his mission to keep things fun throughout the journey. “So I thought it was appropriate to give him the title of Chief of Stuff.”

Gordon and Joyce have also established the Gordon & Joyce Davis Foundation, which will keep both of them moderately busy. The sale of iCEV allows Gordon more time to play golf, watch more games, smoke cigars and boat around Lake Brownwood with Joyce, family and friends. The couple looks forward to watching the seeds they’ve planted at various universities grow, resulting in stronger and more competitive entities.

When she introduces herself, she may mention the rather uncommon spelling of her first name — Jessiica. Howell proudly and good-naturedly lets you know that it is spelled “Jessiica” — with two Ss and two Is.” In fact, there seem to be many coincidences in her life that come in 2s. The two most important people in her life are her seven-year-old daughter, Victoria Marie, and her mother (who also has two Is in her name). Just as Howell’s mother has been instrumental in her life, she is making sure she herself has that same positive influence on her own daughter.

She also has two hometowns — Chicago and Houston. When the Illinois native was five, she and her mom moved Houston to be closer to her grandfather. They loved South Texas, but after several years, her mother missed the Windy City and moved the two of them back up north. Howell attended a magnet school in Chicago, where she thrived and became valedictorian of her class. Mother and daughter then returned to Houston once again, to be closer to her grandfather.

“When I was growing up, my mother taught me how to make sewing patterns for clothes for my Barbie dolls and Cabbage Patch Kids,” she recalls Howell’s love of fashion blossomed while she attended high school in Houston. She became in demand as a model and enjoyed sporting apparel on the runway during those years. However, she realized that she wanted to do more with clothes than just wear them. Her dream was to create women’s clothing from her own designs, much as she had imagined and sewn clothes for her dolls.

“When I was in high school, I heard Texas Tech had a good fashion program, so I chose to go to college there to pursue a degree in fashion design,” she recalls.

“Starting college in 1996 was challenging for me because, for the first time, I was more than eight hours away from home and fully on my own. I also struggled with the core courses in my program, such as art history. Because I was not interested in art history and art prerequisites, having to complete those courses before I could move into sewing and design courses was disappointing.”

She needed to change academic directions and, thankfully, another longtime interest resurfaced. As much as she loved fashion, Howell had always enjoyed helping people as much if not more than designing apparel. She changed her emphasis and major to human development and family studies.

Despite the initial challenges with her first major, Howell loved her college experience at Texas Tech. She enjoyed living in Knapp Hall where she met many friends she is still close to today. Her many extracurricular activities included being active in the Black Student Association, Association for Childhood Education and the Women’s Service Organization, all of which were fulfilling experiences.

The “Deep V” dress made its debut on the runway at the “Fashion is Forever” fashion show at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.

Featured as an Emerging Designer at D.C. Fashion Week, Washington, D.C., Howell introduced “Bamboo Dress,” which took center stage.

Keeping her eye on the ball during her hiatus and doing what needed to be done has paid off for Howell. No, she isn’t someone who is forward-thinking because she thinks it will pay off for her personally. She embraces that attitude because it is part of who she is.

“In hindsight, the time off from school is what I needed, and it helped me to get to where I am today,” she says.

The year 2012 was a banner year for Howell for two reasons.

First, she re-enrolled for online coursework at Texas Tech. Although, it had taken her more than a decade to return to school, she was grateful for that opportunity because it allowed her to finish her bachelor’s degree at Texas Tech.

Secondly, she established her eponymous fashion line that year, Jessiica Howell Fashions, LLC. Her clothing line is described on her website as “upscale, comfortable, flirty and trendy clothing for women.” Two more dreams had come true.

“I have been blessed to have a lot of people see and wear my garments on runways in New York; Washington, D.C.; Atlanta; Houston; and Little Rock,” she notes.

Howell’s career direction shifted a bit, but her love for fashion runs deep, and she remains a member of Fashion Group International and the Women of Wardrobe organizations. She also has received several honors in fashion including the BeEmpowered Award for Fashion, being a nominee for the Mack E. Hannah Pinnacle Award and being featured in Who’s Who of Black Houston, proving she can combine fashion, business and community service.

Howell was in the learning zone when she graduated with her bachelor’s in 2015, so she immediately enrolled in a master’s program.

“I felt there was still so much more work left to be done pertaining to the youth,” she says.“While I was in graduate school, I had a great job with a nonprofit organization that helps people with disabilities.

My passion came alive for helping individuals that are underserved — I want to advocate and help individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and individuals that are underserved with nutrition, wellness, employment opportunities and life skills. It is important for me to be an advocate for individuals that may not be able to advocate for themselves — no matter their age or ability.”

“I met Jessiica during her first year at Tech, as she joined the Visions of Light Gospel Choir, of which I served as director,” says Cory S. Powell, director of the Office of Institutional Diversity for Texas Tech University. “Over the years, we developed a friendship that continues to this day. I am beyond proud of all that she has achieved, despite the various challenges she encountered. She is an example of what is possible through faith, resilience and determination.”

Three years into her undergraduate degree program, Howell chose to leave Texas Tech to return to Houston. She began focusing on working and decided to put school on hold for a while.

After completing her master’s degree from Texas Tech in human development and family studies with an emphasis in youth development in 2017, Howell thought,“Why not go for my doctoral degree at Texas Tech?” So that is exactly what she did.

When she was well into the online doctoral program at Texas Tech, COVID-19 reared its ugly head. In 2020, Howell suddenly was laid off from the job she loved so much at the nonprofit. It was a devastating setback, but not something that stopped the optimist from moving forward with her plans.

Howell took this latest upheaval in stride. As usual, she looked for the good in the situation and took the high road to reach it. In between searching for work, working on her doctorate and helping her daughter with virtual school, Howell marked another item off her bucket list. As a complement to the clothing line, Howell launched her first fragrance, fittingly named “Victoria Marie” in September 2020. The fragrance encompasses “the luxurious and earthy scents of rich jasmine, flavorful blends of pear and grapefruit, amber, warm vanilla and Indonesian patchouli.”

Being in quarantine helped Howell to have the time to devote on working on her 180-page dissertation entitled “Hiring Outside the Box: A look at how employers overcome the social stigmas when hiring individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.”

“Jessiica is a special young woman,” says Robin Lock, Ph.D., professor of special education who directed Howell’s dissertation.

“She called me when she was let go from her job, but instead of moaning and groaning, she said,‘I’m going to finish my dissertation.’

Jessiica put her nose to the grindstone and never complained. She used that time without a job 100% to advance herself. I admire

someone who can be in a tough situation but can have the fortitude to make the best of it.

“It is a remarkable dissertation. In her research, she looked for ways to get people with disabilities into a work situation that they enjoy. She dug in to come up with practical ideas, not pie-in-the-sky ones. She really cares about people and is a very selfless person. I would say that Jessiica has a servant’s heart.

“I’ve had a lot of great graduate students but there are a few jewels, and Jessiica is one of them. I’m the lucky one to get to work with her.”

Howell graduated in August 2021 with her doctorate in special education.

“It feels great to say that I received my bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees from Texas Tech University.”

Howell commemorated this trifecta by getting a paver at the Frazier Alumni Pavilion installed.

In fact, Howell has valued her time at Texas Tech so much that she hopes her daughter will be a Red Raider, too. Her daughter has been in the Legacy Program since 2015, and their home is filled with a lot of Texas Tech spirit. She is looks forward to enrolling her mother and Victoria in an upcoming Legacy U Program. Sponsored by the Texas Tech Alumni Association, the program provides an opportunity for Red Raider grandparents and their grandchildren, ages seven to 13, to spend a few days on campus and get a taste of college at Texas Tech University.

“Now that Victoria is seven, I can’t wait for her to attend Legacy U and be on the Texas Tech campus,” she says.

Life certainly shines brighter for Howell these days.

Since 2020, she has gone from being suddenly jobless to having a doctoral degree and working as the director of child nutrition for a Houston-area school district, where she oversees 19 schools in underserved communities.

The position is perfect for her, combining her love of helping children of all abilities with THE PICTURE PEOPLE her interest in nutrition and advocacy.

“The realistic truth is that there are many students that rely on breakfast and lunch meals served at school,” she says.“It is my duty and goal to ensure I am feeding students and providing them with a nutritious foundation to help them do well in school.”

Howell continues to enhance her professional knowledge with active memberships in the School Nutritional Association and the Texas Association of School Nutrition.

“I’ve always wanted to be a voice for A priceless moment with those who cannot speak for themselves,” Victoria Marie, the inspiration she says, passionately. for “Victoria Marie” fragrance.

It seems she has accomplished that goal both professionally and as a volunteer.

She has spent time volunteering at the local Women’s Home and has mentored for the Women of W.I.L.D. at the YWCA. The acronym “W.I.L.D.” stands for “Women Independently Living and Developing.” The program is geared toward assisting young women ages 18-24 who have aged out of foster care or are homeless and would like a chance to pursue education or job training. The organization holds fundraisers to help provide housing, counseling and life skills classes.

Never one to focus solely on her own success, though, the other-oriented entrepreneur also has founded the Be Bold Boutique for girls in Houston. She currently serves as board president of a charter school in Houston, serves as a board director on the HOA in her community and has been a member of the Greater Houston Black Chamber.

Howell is an active member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., a collegiate organization with the goal “to share inspiring life experiences, learn new things, conquer life challenges, thrive in society, and uplift the community through sisterhood, scholarship, and service,” according to their website.

You can’t help but admire a person who loves people as much as Howell does. As Lock says, “She is selfless.”

Although she may have many positive “2s” in her life, there truly is only one Jessiica Howell.

Touching the Sky Growing up with a father in the United States Army, Lara Aubin Daniel was blessed with opportunities to experience life in diverse areas of the world. It sparked in her a wanderlust that remains to this day. A mountaineer as of 2015, she is more than halfway to achieving the lofty goal of the Explorers Grand Slam.

The Explorers Grand Slam includes “reaching the North Pole, the South Pole and all of the Seven Summits. The North Pole is defined as the point in the Northern Hemisphere where the earth’s axis of rotation meets its surface. The South Pole, situated in Antarctica, is the southernmost point on the surface of the Earth and lies on the opposite side of the Earth from the North Pole. The Seven Summits are defined as the highest mountain peaks of each of the seven continents.” (explorersgrandslam.com) Only 75 individuals worldwide have accomplished The Explorers Grand Slam, including only 15 women.

“I never realized how much I would love the challenge of climbing a mountain and how at peace I feel being surrounded by such greatness,” says Daniel.

aniel resides just outside Conifer, Colorado, a rural town about 35 miles southwest of Denver.

“We lived in Colorado a couple times in my youth, and I feel like the mountains were somewhat ingrained in me then,” says Daniel.“My family used to camp and hike and ski and fish and all those sorts of things. And I always enjoyed that. So, I think that was probably the start of it (loving the mountains).”

Daniel attended high school in Berlin, Germany, and was present before, during and after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

As she grew nearer to graduating high school in Germany, and college loomed on the horizon, she knew her parents would also be returning to America. She set her sights on Texas Tech because her brother, who had graduated from Westwood High School in Austin, was attending Tech.

“I didn’t have a common high school experience with anybody,” Daniel says.“So, just having one person that would be there that I knew was comforting…”

Daniel earned a bachelor of arts in public relations in 1996. She was drawn back to Colorado, settling in Denver, because she wanted a big city, but also proximity to mountains.

Although she’s immersed in mountaineering now, previously she was involved in adventure sports — such as adventure races, cycling events, week-long paddling trips, heli-skiing trips and The Rim to Rim (a 24-mile hike/run from rim to rim in the Grand Canyon).

“Through that process (of participating in adventure sports), I actually met my husband (Steve), who is from

Texas as well,” explains Daniel. “My husband was also an alpine climber.

“That piqued my interest. He went on climbs and I didn’t go with him…I finally said, ‘Hey, I want to try this. I want to see if I can do it. I want to see if I like it.’ And so, in 2015, we went to the Cascades, and I did Mount Shuksan, which is not a particularly high peak, but it is glaciated, so you get to practice on the snow with crevasses, with an ice ax, being roped, all the elements of alpine climbing. We made the summit.”

She was hooked, and in 2016 she and Steve climbed Mount Rainer and then traveled to Russia and climbed Mount Elbrus. From there, having become an all-consuming passion, it was mapping out which peaks to climb when.

“It’s a time thing,” Daniel explains.“A lot of people are able just to check them off, one after another, relatively quickly.

But these are big trips. They take a lot of time. They take a lot of training. There’s a financial commitment.”

Her summits to date consist of Mount Elbrus (skinned up and skied down); Kilimanjaro, where her team reached the summit so quickly, they arrived well before sunrise; Carstensz Pyramid, also known as Puncak Jaya, where her team had a very rare rainless day; Aconcagua, where every single team member made it to the top; and two attempts on Denali, where weather conditions didn’t allow for the summit either time.

She says Denali will happen, adding, “I will return in a few years and conquer this fierce opponent.”

Knowing how to climb a mountain requires mastering challenging skills such as ascending using a rope, rappelling, self-arrest (being able to stop yourself with your ice ax if you fall and start sliding downward) and being knowledgeable about how to tie certain knots. These are just a few things aside from being physically and mentally prepared for the rigors of mountaineering.

She plans to hit Denali, Mount Vinson and skiing to the South Pole in 2023-2024 and finish off The Explorers Grand Slam with skiing to the North Pole in 2024-2025. Her focus currently is training to climb Mount Everest March 2022, the tallest mountain on earth.

“Everest is the first peak that I have hired a trainer,” she says.“I have always self-trained for the other peaks.”

Currently, she trains six days a week, leaving day seven for rest and contemplation. The climbs are physically and emotionally taxing. Every peak is different, the terrain, the weather and the challenges. All peaks offer guide services, some offer the assistance of porters,

and some don’t. Regardless, each trip is a mental and physical trial — a confrontation of sorts with the raw, natural world.

“While you’re doing it, it’s uncomfortable,” she says.

“You know, you’re cold, you’re hot, you’re hungry, you’re not hungry. You can’t sleep, all you want to do is sleep.

You’ve got the extremes going all the time.

“Doing these sorts of peaks, you will get a handful of people that think it’s reckless and crazy and insane, and why would you do it? The way I see it, there are more factors that you can control on a climb than you can driving on a highway.”

Some of Daniel’s more memorable volunteer and philanthropic efforts, both globally and locally are: Club Beyond in Kenya and Hungary; Haiti, assisting at small rural medical clinic; Namlo International in Nepal working with teachers; International Animal Rescue in W. Kalimantan, Borneo, at an orangutan rehab center; Polaris Alaskan Malamute Rescue in Golden, Colorado; MAX Fund in Denver; Small Animal Evacuation Team in Jefferson County, Colorado; Spring Institute in Denver and as a Write our World board member in Denver.

Daniel’ devotion to mountaineering is enormous, which lends perspective to what she says is actually her No. 1 love: animals.

As a child and young woman who moved with her family every two to four years, Daniel took comfort in the few things that didn’t change. One of those was a fluffy grey kitten she received when she was a tiny girl. She named her Angel, and she made every move with the family and was an adorable constant in Daniel’ life.

“She was with me from the time I was four through 18,” says Daniels. “She died when I was a senior in high school. I have to wonder if it’s because I wasn’t going to be home much after that and somehow, she knew.”

Today Daniel’ life is filled with animals. She and Steve have adopted five malamutes and also own two barn cats. She enjoys spending free time as a philanthropist, volunteering for a variety of charities and nonprofits domestically and internationally.

Her favorite organizations are animal-centric.

She rates at the top of her list Denver Pet Partners (DPP), a non-profit organization that advances the human-animal bond.

The organization focuses on assisting with education and child welfare programs, in healthcare settings and in literacy mentorship programs.

DPP trains and registers nine different species of animal. In Daniel’ case, her dog, Summit, is one of DPP’s registered therapy animals.

“I’ve had a lot of malamutes,” she says. “That’s my preferred breed. I started with two that I got as puppies.

And since then, we’ve been rescuing them. They’ve all been amazing dogs, but Summit just has this different energy. So, I decided to pursue this, and she’s definitely meant to be a therapy dog. She has just got the most calming disposition.”

She also helps raise money for DPP, enjoying spending time with Summit and also experiencing the joy her dog brings to others.

“As an ardent lover of animals, I often prefer to be surrounded by my furry friends than my human friends,” says Daniel.

steeped in HISTORY According to tea history, the drink has been around for almost 5,000 years. The first cup of tea was supposedly a happy accident. Legend has it a strong wind blew tea leaves into a Chinese emperor’s pot of boiling water. Intrigued, he drank the steeped beverage and reported feeling warm and fuzzy and full of life.

From that first cup, a tradition was born. Eventually tea plantations sprouted all over China. Throughout the centuries, travelers crossing through China were introduced to tea. Its popularity outside of China began to blossom. Eventually, tea was being consumed across Europe, mostly amongst the upper classes, ultimately making its way to the British colonies in America.

Tea grew to be so popular amongst the British that by the 1760s, more than 1 million pounds a year was consumed by the colonists. Having tea became synonymous with socializing. The popularity of tea in America has never waned. Today tea-drinkers are afforded access to a vast variety of teas from the farthest reaches of the globe.

Whether you take your tea hot or iced — and iced tea has been around in the American South since the 1880s — finding a place to get your tea fix is getting easier. The tea business is a $13 billion a year industry in America, with an anticipated growth of 9% a year.

TEXAS tea If you live in Texas and haven’t come across a Tea2Go TeaN’ergy, you will soon. The tea franchise is spreading like wildfire across the state, and by the end of 2022, there will be almost 50 locations.

Don Williams ’68 and his daughter, Stephanie Williams Chavez ’11, own the Tea2Go stores in Lubbock, Levelland, Seminole, Plainview and Clovis, as well as the franchise operation.

Williams, an accountant, was raised in Muleshoe, Texas, and spent most of his career in Plainview, Texas. He and his wife, Tammy, recently moved to Lubbock. He spent his career buying and selling businesses. Among the many companies he’s owned, including multiple restaurants, he at one time owned and operated all of the Taco Villa restaurants.

In 2015, Williams purchased the Plainview Tea2Go from an acquaintance — the store was floundering and the franchisee wanted out. Williams also purchased part of the Tea2Go on Milwaukee Avenue in Lubbock. At the time, Tea2Go, LLC, had franchise stores in Lubbock, Plainview, Abilene and Midland. Eventually, Tea2Go, LLC, was taken back by the bank and put up for sale. Williams and his daughter, Chavez, who was raised in Plainview, purchased the whole operation in 2018 with an eye toward improving their handful of existing stores and expanding the franchise operations.

“Our stores were the only ones that were successful,” says Chavez.

“Out of the 22 Tea2Go locations that were open at that point, almost all of them have closed except our stores and three others.”

While expanding Tea2Go franchises was possible back in 2018, Chavez says she decided to wait until she and her team were able to perfect the stores they held.

“We had an amazing skeleton, but in 2018, my team and I were just starting to flesh it out with new policies and procedures,” she explains.

In 2019 Williams, Chavez and their team began consulting with a franchise expert who assured them their business model was ready for expansion.

“Our concept has been successful enough that we have gone from our five stores to 21 stores since 2018,” she says.“By the end of 2022, we will have 48 stores in Texas. We have plans to move into New Mexico next, then Arizona.”

While Tea2Go is burgeoning today, the tea business came with a big learning curve.

“Actually, before Tea2Go I wasn’t a tea drinker at all,” notes Chavez. “So, it wasn’t something that we got into for that reason. I actually was living a very unhealthy lifestyle…I was trying to live a cleaner lifestyle. I wanted something to build and we found Tea2Go. I started doing it for the health of it, while I was getting healthy, I fell in love with the business. And it made me fall in love with tea…I actually gained confidence in all areas of my life. Once I found my confidence, then I found my passion in tea and business. One thing led to another and here we are now, a fast-growing company.”

Williams has enjoyed partnering with his daughter and watching things unfold.

“Stephanie and Chanel (Perry, chief operating officer) both, I give the two of them a lot of credit,” remarks Williams. “They have really come in and built up Tea2Go. I’ve provided some guidance, but, they’ve done the legwork. And, really, the team they’ve built — they’ve done amazing work.”

Perry echoes Williams’ and Chavez’ sentiments.

“Our team is critical in the company’s daily operations,” says Perry. “We all have our roles but each of us knows when to help pick up where one of us is needing the help. We don’t have the mentality of, ‘That’s not my role or responsibility, so I’m not going to help.’ We all started in stores so we help out in any position we need to whether in the office or the stores. I think that’s why our team works so well together because we step up before someone says they need help.”

Part of the allure of Tea2Go is its enormous selection. They have a self-serve tea bar in every store with a variety of teas and flavored teas, the “tearistas” behind the counter can craft custom drink orders.

A clever and tasty twist are the flavored sugars that can be added to any beverage: blueberry, strawberry, vanilla and lemon.

Patrons can also purchase loose-leaf tea, from black to green to oolong to matcha to herbal and beyond, the selection is extensive.

“Tea2Go TeaN’ergy is popular because of the consistency we have,” says Perry.“We have our healthy selection of loose-leaf teas, our hydrating tea bar and our most popular item, our energy drinks. We promote monthly specialty drinks but overall, we stick to our core items, and I think that draws people in and keeps them returning. They always know they can get what they like, made the exact way each and every visit.”

From the beginning, they set out to make sure Tea2Go TeaN’ergy was more than a simple tea shop.

“TeaN’ergy started in 2015 with us,” says Chavez, in reference to their energy drink line.“It started with something called the Monster Mash. We used a different energy mixer than what we use now with TeaN’ergy. TeaN’ergy is sourced differently. But that Monster Mash drink is what started this energy frenzy. It was blue and pink, and we realized that color sells.”

Tea2Go TeaN’ergy products are naturally derived from herbal tea and green tea.

“Because we really do use the highest quality of teas and even our energy drinks are tea-based,” says Williams. “So, it’s not like drinking a Red Bull, it’s natural energy and it releases more slowly without all the negative risk.”

Since nailing the franchise aspect of their company, the team has been able to not only perfect the classics but also create a new product: fizzy tea.

“We have come up with a way to make a soda out of tea concentrate,” Chavez says. “So, if someone prefers soda to tea, they can come in and get tea that tastes like soda, but it’s good for you. We made a tea company into a healthy beverage store with a huge array of options. Anyone can come into our stores and find something they’ll love.”

and Mahriah Dickson have owned and operated the market, open on Saturdays year-round, since 2017. In the summer and spring — peak season -—130 vendors offer a variety of goods. The rest of the year, 80 to 90 vendors participate. The fall holiday season also is a very popular time for shoppers.

The market has a family atmosphere and provides a wholesome and interesting spot to spend a few hours on a Saturday. The venue sells traditional farmers market goods, including seasonal produce; plants and flowers; farm-raised meats; home-baked goods and sweets; ready-to-eat items and prepared foods such as jam and jellies. Other offerings include clothing and accessories; décor and handmade furniture, crafts and gifts; wellness items and items for babies, children and pets. (Dogs are welcome at the market.)

“The market is located on a farm my family has owned for 50 years,” says Mahriah, a Wolfforth native.“In fact, 32 family members live on a street located on the land. Jeff and I have 16 children, 14 of whom are adopted, so our immediate family makes up a large portion of that number. The market truly is a family business - some of our older daughters run a jam and jelly store.”

For four years, Jennifer Cuevas, owner of Munchies Bakery, and her husband, Jesse, have sold her homemade breads and six-inch pies at their barn at the Wolfforth Farmers Market. They offer a variety of savory and sweet breads, including their top-selling sourdough. Every other week, they bring gluten-free breads and other treats, such as honey-jalapeño cornbread.

“I like that the Wolfforth Farmers Market is community-based,” Jennifer says. “The owners, Jeff and Mahriah, are all about seeing vendors succeed and

taking care of the Wolfforth community. They have their blessings table at the market and are involved with Wolfforth Meals on Wheels. Being community-oriented important to me, too.”

E3 Farms has been a vendor at the Wolfforth Farmers Market since the beginning. They sell a wide variety of produce, including greens, roots, tomatoes, mushrooms and microgreens.

“We found ourselves in the same position as many other vendors at the end of the summer, looking for a place to sell year-round to our loyal customers, and the Wolfforth Farmers Market perfectly filled that void,” says Ethan Carter, owner of E3 Farms and also an undergraduate plant and soil science student at Texas Tech University.“As the market has developed, our favorite aspect was the addition of the vendor barns, allowing vendors to have a consistent location for customers to find them every week.”

Patrons flock to this jewel of a market that has something for everyone. On many market days, guests can enjoy entertainment such as live music. There also is face painting for the young – and young-at-heart.

If you’re hungry during your visit, you can indulge in lunch or a variety of snacks in the food court. The market can host 10 food trucks and rotates vendors each week to give everyone an opportunity to participate. The food court has seating for 100 people, including some newly-added covered seating.

The Horses Under the Riders

This was put together to inform readers about one of our favorite traditions, The Masked Rider, and to honor all of the past horses. Our Summer 2022 issue will feature the tenure of Fearless Champion, the current horse that is retiring.

“Donald Hollar with Tech Beauty, undated from the Heritage Club” THEY SAY THAT UNDER EVERY GREAT MASKED RIDER, THERE IS AN EXCELLENT AND EXCEPTIONAL HORSE. Well, maybe they don’t, but if they did, we can illustrate

why this would be true using various sources housed in the University Archives at the Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library. As many of you are familiar with the Texas Tech mascot and its history, I’ll only repeat some basic information.

It is said that the first “rider” appearance was in 1936. According to a University Daily article from September 1994, George Tate rode a palomino as the “Red Raider Rider” at a home football game. The article offers that this tradition was not formalized, but in the 1930s and early 1940s, students would sometimes sneak horses in and do a run before the game.

All of this changed on Jan. 1, 1954, when Joe Kirk Fulton rode Blackie into the stadium leading the Texas Tech football team onto the field for the Gator Bowl. Several sources report that the entry was nothing less than sensational and that the crowd exploded in cheers. Tech would defeat Auburn by a score of 35 to 13.

At that game, the tradition became established and official. Various things have changed over the years, for instance the name of the rider (initially “Red Raider Rider” now “Masked Rider”), but a constant has been that a majestic horse is part of the tradition. There have been around a dozen horses used as the mascot and several others that were used as backups because of injuries or other circumstances. Joe Kirk Fulton would go on to ride his own horse, Pretty Day. The next horse was Tech Beauty. She was born at Tech and would serve with several riders (except J.H. Rhea, who used his own horse Beau Black).

Tech Beauty had an interesting tenure as the mascot. She was kidnapped in 1963 and shaved or painted with some letters on her. It was believed to be the work of opponents. Also, she would foal several times. During these periods, Charcoal Cody would be the backup. Tech Beauty served from 1956, until her passing.

After this, Charcoal Cody stepped up and served until 1972. His last year he shared the stage with ShowboyHuffman, the personal horse of the Masked Rider, Randy Jeffers. Jeffers would take Showboy-Huffman on out-of-town games. Jeffers was the rider from 1971-1973. His second year, Showboy-Huffman was the mascot. Throughout the tradition the name of the horse has varied. This is unique to the Texas Tech mascot. For instance, from 1973-1987, there would be three horses that shared similar names: Happy V, Happy VI, and Happy VI-II. Later, the Masked Rider Advisory Committee in February 1999, formalized the decision that “the mascot’s name be unique to each new horse.” Of note, is that Happy VI and Happy VI-II were both donated to the university by Anne Burnett Tandy who owned the 6666 Ranch. Of interest also, according to a Lubbock Avalanche-Journal article from Sept.

2, 1994, Happy VI “appeared in one of the original Marlboro advertisements with Bigum Bradley, a former wagon boss at the 6666 Ranch.”

The next horse, Midnight Raider, was named after a “Name the Horse” contest. According to reference file documents,

Jeanie Ware “submitted the winning name.” He would serve until 1993 and was replaced by Double T. Several horses followed between 1994–2001, including stand-ins, with Black Phantom Raider (also a name determined by a contest) acting as the mascot from about 1998-2002. Midnight Matador was the next.

His tenure lasted until 2013, when he was retirement eligible, since, at the time, he was the longest serving mascot. He carried 11 Masked Riders. He spent his retirement years under the care of Stacy Stockard, the Masked Rider, 2004-2005. The next horse to step-in as mascot was or is Fearless Champion.

As many have probably heard, Fearless Champion has also earned his retirement, after working with nine Masked Riders.

He has been running the field, carrying the Masked Rider and visiting lots of folks since 2013. His current Masked Rider, Ashley Adams, in a recent conversation, pointed out to me that Fearless Champion plays a vital role. He must be an athlete and a public figure, which is a big job. She offered that he is an incredible horse and has been a blessing, both at the games and visiting daycares and nursing homes. Both the Masked Rider and the horse under the rider work hard to keep this Texas Tech tradition going.

In closing, this tradition is no simple feat. A lot of hard work and dedication have been piled into making it a success. Student groups, donors, committees, the horse, the rider and numerous others have made this happen. There have been some incidents and tragic events, but all involved have worked together over the years to make safety a priority. All of this effort by so many people focused on continuing the tradition is appreciated by alumni and fans. Since the tradition began unofficially or officially, Texas Tech has been fortunate to have some excellent and exceptional horses under the great riders. So,“Guns Up” to all the horses, past, present and future!

Thank You, Mandy Wiley The Heart and Soul of the Texas Tech Official Ring Program When Mandy Mercer Wiley reported for her first day of work at the Tech Traditions gift shop in the then-named Merket Alumni Center in December 1996, she never could have imagined what was ahead for her. There were many changes she would be instrumental in making during her next 25 years of service to the Texas Tech Alumni Association.

A longtime Lubbock resident, Wiley grew up loving the Red Raiders. She and her family attended Texas Tech sporting events. She went to school there and when she married Tom Wiley, an equally — if not more — passionate fan and former student, the school became even more important to them.

Wiley grew up working in retail sales at her family’s West Texas Optical stores in Lubbock. There, she developed excellent customer relations skills. She also loved working with eyeglasses, repairing and adjusting them and helping customers make selections. In addition, she developed accounting and inventory skills.

After her father retired and the optical business closed, Wiley became proprietor of Continental Antiques Bed & Breakfast on Broadway in Lubbock. She and Tom enjoyed meeting and hosting interesting people and had regular customers, many of whom became friends. It was a wonderful but taxing life, and after four years, they decided it was time for a change.

“I lived near campus and thought I would enjoy working there,” Wiley says. “I saw the job in the alumni association gift shop in an online job listing. I thought it would be different than anything I’d ever done.”

Her first duties were in sales and inventory, and in fact, she helped develop an automated inventory system.

Many accounting duties soon were added to her task list.

She became the store manager until TTAA outsourced the business to a local company that took over all her tasks except for managing sales of class rings, diploma frames and other affinity merchandise.

For most of her time at TTAA, Wiley managed the Official Texas Tech ring program. Although for years, the association had sold Texas Tech class rings, leaving design details up to customers, that all changed in 1998.

tradition with a ring ceremony,” Wiley says.“Curt Langford, who was the association’s director of marketing at the time, and I discussed it.

Once we decided to go with this plan, Curt got the Student Alumni Board involved to help design the official ring designs. We had a committee that decided what elements, such as the Double T, Bell Tower and Masked Rider, would go on the ring.”

With Texas Tech and many other campuses experiencing tremendous success with the official ring mindset, Milestone Traditions was eventually acquired by Balfour, a 100-year industry leader in class rings that now manufactures the official Texas Tech rings.

“I’ve often referred to Mandy as the ‘ring queen’ on campus, with her history going back to the beginning of the program,” Langford says. “Our goal wasn’t to start a ring tradition, but to restore the ring tradition Texas Tech once had in earlier years when everyone could easily recognize the Tech ring.

“In her 25 years with the association, Mandy has interacted with thousands of students and alumni helping them with their ring sizing and orders. We’ll miss the personal touch she brought to the program, but the ring tradition is as strong as ever because of her heartfelt leadership. We are committed to continuing this important tradition in her honor, as well as for those who wear the ring.”

The Texas Tech Official Ring Program launched with the inaugural ring ceremony in Spring 1999. To be eligible to purchase a ring, students have to have attained 75 hours toward graduation. Of course, graduates are automatically eligible to purchase an official ring. If a ring is purchased by the deadline each semester, the recipient can participate in the ring ceremony that is held in the fall and spring.

“In working closely with Mandy for 25 years, I have not met anyone as dedicated to building the ring tradition at Texas Tech as Mandy,” says Tim Shore, director of collegiate marketing development for Balfour and a 2001 Texas Tech graduate who was a member of the initial SAB planning committee and later worked in marketing at the alumni association.

“She was there from the beginning of the tradition and has been instrumental in growing it to one of the most successful college ring traditions in the country. Nobody cares more about customer service; Mandy always put students, parents, and alumni first. It is hard to imagine a grad fair or ring ceremony without Mandy Wiley.”

To that end, Wiley has added meaningful moments to the ceremony since its inception. One popular part,“A Walk Around the Ring,” is something she incorporated to explain the meaning behind the various symbols on the ring. Another tradition takes place at the end of the ceremony when students turn their rings so that the

Double T faces outward, representing their status as alumni facing the world and “Striving for Honor” in all that they do.

She also was instrumental in developing Grad Fair, a twice-a-year event at which students can purchase rings, announcements, diploma frames, graduation DVDs and other items related to finishing college.

“When we started the ring program in 1999, very few students purchased Texas Tech rings,” Wiley says. “Today, many students participate in the program. I think they value the traditions surrounding the ring. The official Texas Tech ring has become one of of Texas Tech University’s most appreciated traditions.

“The ring tradition is as much about the ring ceremony as the ring itself. When we called then President Donald Haragan at the time to ask if he would participate in the ring ceremony, he said, ‘Sure. What’s a ring ceremony?’ He was instrumental to the program’s initial success, genuinely wanting to be there to personally present rings to those who had earned the privilege of wearing them.”

Langford notes that as the ceremony grew, with increased participation and more family members traveling for the event, it was necessary to begin hosting on multiple nights. He remembers visiting with Mandy about separating ceremonies by academic college, rather than alphabetically, to help keep the event as intimate as possible.

“This is where Mandy excelled, hosting an event that made everyone feel special,” Langford adds. “I recall Dean Robert Ewalt’s comments after our first ceremony…‘You all have done a good thing.

You’ve made our institution small again.’ That was significant at the time for our growing university and a reflection of the personable approach Mandy brought to the program.

“After an alumni center expansion and even then the need for a full week of ceremonies, it was time to move the event to the arena to enable continued growth. We’re now hosting post-ceremony receptions at the alumni center where students line up for a picture of their ring beside the ring statue.”

Wiley has been responsible for enhancing the ceremony so it is something so meaningful that families often travel great distances SPRING 2022

to attend in honor of a relative. Some attendees and recipients have said that they love how personal the ceremony is, perhaps even more so than commencement.

After a long history with the TTAA, Wiley chose to move on from her position on Dec. 31, 2021.

“Mandy Wiley leaves some very big shoes to fill for TTAA,” says Bill Dean, Ed.D., who retired in 2018 as president and CEO of the alumni association.“She accepted the responsibility for managing the association’s ring program and built it into a highly successful operation. Her management of ring sales, the Grad Fair and the ring ceremonies each semester has made this program one of the best in the country.

“I always admired the thoroughness and the calm manner in which she operated. She never complained, and there were always ups and downs in the program. She just did her job and did it well.

I appreciated her dedication to the ring program and to the Texas Tech Alumni Association.”

A true team player, Wiley always has participated in other alumni association activities. Another big project of hers for 12 years was serving as host for home football games in the association’s suite in the Jones AT&T Stadium.

Prior to a game, she spent the week making sure all suite ticketholders and their guests’ seats were arranged, ordering food and drink and distributing parking passes.

Wiley has spent a long time dedicated to creating and enhancing the Texas Tech Official Ring Program. Thanks to her, a long-standing tradition is poised to grow even larger and stronger over time. She’ll forever represent a significant part of the association’s history in her service to students and alumni.

It turned out that a sold-out crowd of 15,300 was in attendance to witness the 77-64 victory against UT. It was a record-breaking number to watch a game in the arena.

As it turns out, the arena wasn’t the only place to watch the game with a huge group of Texas Tech fans.

On game night, the Texas Tech Alumni Association opened the doors for free to its Frazier Alumni Pavilion. Guests enjoyed free hamburgers, hotdogs and popcorn on a first-come first-served basis, and there was a cash bar. A crowd of about 250 enjoyed the facility, food and, of course, fellow fans.

Yet another attendance record was set long before the tipoff. Raiderville, as the student campout area by the arena is called, had an unprecedented “population” of more than 1,500. The group began squatting Saturday prior to the game to be sure they were among the students admitted to the arena for the game on Feb. 1.

To support the students’ enthusiasm, the Texas Tech Alumni Association team delivered fresh-baked Kubacek Kolaches to Raiderville residents before the big game. Fans donated more than $12,000 to a GoFundMe account to purchase supplies, and local businesses and citizens provided pizza, water and other food items to the appreciative students.

Kahlie Callison joined the Texas Tech Alumni Association team Dec. 6 as the new director of Tech Traditions. In her position, she oversees the Texas Tech Official Ring Program, which includes the Grad Fair and the ring ceremonies. She also handles sales of other products sold through the alumni association such as diploma frames,other graduate gifts and TTAA merchandise.

“I have been a huge fan of Texas Tech since I was a little girl,” the Friona, Texas, native says. “Growing up, Lubbock was the big town for dental appointments, hair appointments and other things. Now I’ve lived here for 20 years, and I still love it.”

Callison is no stranger to the Texas Tech campus either, as she began her college career there. She attended school here and then worked for the university for 16 years.

“I decided to complete my degree while being a single mom and working full time,” she says. “Because of those circumstances, I was unable to attend Texas Tech as a traditional student. At the time I returned to college, Texas Tech did not have a full online degree program, so I attended Wayland Baptist University where I completed my associate of applied science and bachelor of applied science in August 2020.”

For nine of those years working on campus, she was employed in the J.T. & Margaret Talkington College of Visual & Performing Arts where she was the dean’s assistant and event coordinator for the annual donor gala Season of the Arts and other college events. She then moved to the Office of the Provost where she was responsible for gathering and maintaining faculty credentials for the Texas Tech University Reaffirmation through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

She then relocated to the Office of Planning & Assessment where she played an integral role in growing the West Texas Assessment Conference into the Texas Association for Higher Education Assessment Conference. She served as secretary for the TxAHEA Association as well as the event coordinator for the annual conference.

Although she wasn’t seeking a new job, she says she’s always looking for a challenge. The alumni association position opened up, and she decided it might be a good fit.

“We’re thrilled to have Kahlie join the TTAA team,” says Curt Langford, president and CEO of the alumni association. “I first got acquainted with Kahlie during her role with the OPA office on campus and was immediately impressed with her professionalism and enthusiasm. When this opportunity opened up, we reached out to her. She was excited to work with the ring tradition and is genuinely enthused with our overall mission at the TTAA. She’ll play a major part of our continued success.”

Now that Callison is in the position, she is learning all she can about the alumni association and the ring program. As for her plans, she is excited to carry on what has become a valued tradition at Texas Tech and take the established ring program to a new level.

“I really love my new job because I get to work with students,” she says. “I love interacting with people. I want to grow the ring program so that every student participates in the ring tradition – I want it to be just an automatic thing for them to do. Although we’re getting away from multiple ring ceremonies, it would be great to grow so large that we have to add a second one at the arena.

I’d like to help create a ‘ring weekend’ that involves the Lubbock community around the ceremony. People coming to town could go to certain vendors and businesses and show their rings to get free or discounted items or services during that weekend.”

Callison also wants to make shopping for Texas Tech and alumni association merchandise more accessible via the association website and possibly to have an in-house store again sometime in the future.

She would like the store to offer a variety of merchandise. Currently, the association carries some high-end branded merchandise such as crystal and leather goods, but she would like to add items at different price points and provide more varieties of merchandise.

As she settles into her new spot and duties, Callison appreciates the support of her 14-year-old son, Aiden, an 8th grader at Laura Bush Middle School who dreams of one day being on the Texas Tech baseball team.

She adds that her boyfriend of three years, Steven Adams, is “excited for my new journey.”

MICHAEL A. CRABTREE, a friend, has been named to the College Football Hall of Fame. He was a two-time All American and he set many records while playing football for Texas Tech, including all-time receiving yards and touchdown catches.

He also broke eight NCAA records in his two-year college playing career. Michael becomes the sixth Red Raider player in the College Football Hall of Fame. The College Football Hall of Fame and Irving-based National Football Foundation choose members on athletic accomplishments as well as good citizenship.

1956 RAYMOND D. THORNTON (BBA Accounting) and DEE ANNE THORNTON (BS ’62 General Home Economics) Lubbock, Texas, celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on September 2, 2021. Raymond received his BBA in accounting from Texas Tech and served for more than 40 years in the banking and private accountancy business. Dee Anne received her BS in home economics and owned her own secretarial services/employment agency. They lived in Levelland from 1974 until 2015 and then moved

to the Carillon community in Lubbock where they now reside. Raymond and Dee Anne have two sons and two grandchildren.

1977 THOMAS G. HAIR (BA Art) Houston, Texas, founder of Axiom, a branding and digital marketing firm, has merged with BrandExtract. BOOKS TERRANCE J. BROWN, FAIA (BA ‘69 Architecture) Corrales, New Mexico, has written the book,“A Vietnam Journal — Life at the End of the War.” This book chronicles Brown’s life as a 1st Lieutenant during the Vietnam war. Brown kept a journal and sketchbook covering ten months of the war. His journal entries detail the beauty and struggles of this war-torn country, its people, and our military personnel. It also relates the exhilaration of flying in helicopters, the beauty of Vietnam, close calls with disaster, and the utter feeling of boredom while serving during the end of the war. Terry, a Distinguished Military Graduate, received a commission in the US Army through the Reserve Officer Training Corps. He served a year at the Army Engineer School in Fort Belvoir, Virginia, as an instructor teaching map reading and cross-country travel to Officer Candidate Students before he received his orders for Vietnam. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects and is recognized internationally for his prolific pen and ink drawings and contributions toward promoting cultural sensitivity in his architectural designs for native American communities.

He is also the author of Sketchbook on the World: Pen and Ink Travel Sketches, published by Sunstone Press, which includes some 400 pen and ink drawings and stories of his travels worldwide. His wife is Sandra.

MIKE LOONEY (BS’71 Marketing) Dallas,Texas,has published “Tickle The Light,” a fictional novel about Joe Donley, college baseball star who survives a life-threatening head injury. To his lingering dismay, the injury robs Joe of his chance for future big-league stardom — a fate virtually predetermined from a lifetime of preparation with his nurturing father who left his own promising baseball career on the beaches of Normandy in 1944. Over the next two decades, despite a relatively healthy existence, a loving family and a successful business with his best childhood buddy, depression gradually surrounds him like a tight cocoon.

Donley, blinded by the desire for a more meaningful existence, cannot see the good things in his life. Because of a medical miracle of unparalleled degree, He claims his rightful destiny as darling of the sports world. The book depicts his turbulent and sometimes hilarious journey down fame’s base path as the oldest rookie in major league history.

ANDY WILKINSON (B.A. ’72 Sociology) Lubbock, Texas, has written his memoir titled “Llanero.” It details his life “growing up atop the flattest mountain on Earth” and how the Llano Estacado shaped him as a person and an artist. AMANDA SNEED (BFA ’07 Graphic Design) an artist who also grew up on the Llano Estacado, reacted to the text with her multi-layered use of bold colors and brash forms to tell the story in a different way. Sneed is a graphic designer for Hartsfield Design in Lubbock, Texas.

Wilkinson has had many careers throughout his life: a policeman, a businessman, a poet, playwright, teacher, and now to his work as an award-winning full-time writer and singer of contemporary western folk music. His creative work recounts the long human occupation of the Panhandle from Native American days to that of the modern cotton farmer and oilfield worker and celebrates the unique character and special value of the High Plains’ shortgrass prairie, open skies, and deep Ogallala aquifer. His wife is Mary Ann.

1978 STEPHEN S. “STEVE” FORTENBERRY (BS Agricultural Education) Lubbock, has been promoted to regional vice president of the southwest region of Agrisompo North America, formerly ARMTech.

Agrisompo is one of the nation’s largest underwriters of federally sponsored crop insurance in the United States. Steve oversees one of six national regions, working closely with farmer and rancher clients to meet their needs at the field level. His region covers New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. Steve remains active in his family farming operation in Lubbock and Hale Counties.

1982 W. SCOTT HENSLEY (BS Mechanical Engineering) Lubbock, has been named an associate at Parkhill. Scott is a senior mechanical engineer in the MEP/structural practice and works in the Parkhill Lubbock office. Scott’s experience includes design services for heating, ventilating, air conditioning, plumbing and fire protection systems for commercial, industrial, institutional and military-related facilities. His recent design experience includes numerous projects, both for new construction and renovations of commercial and federal K- 12 schools, higher education, and life safety upgrades of high rise and dormitory facilities. Scott joined Parkhill in 2002 and has 39 years of experience.

1984 LARRY G. AUTREY (BBA Accounting, BBA Finance) Westlake, Texas, has been named to D CEO’s Dallas 500 list. Larry is a managing partner at Whitley Penn and has more than 30 years of tax, advisory and business valuation experience focused on public and private clients. He is the chair of North America for Nexia International, the former chairman for the Major Firms Group, a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and a member of the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants to name a few. The Dallas 500 is a special edition that profiles the most influential leaders in North Texas, across a wide spectrum of industries. It’s produced by the editors of D CEO, the award-winning business title of D Magazine Partners. His wife is Tiffany.

1990 DANIEL S. HART (BS Civil Engineering, BA Architecture) Austin, Texas, has been inaugurated as The American Institute of Architects 98th president. Daniel has held a number of AIA leadership positions. He was the moderator of the AIA Strategic Council in 2016 and served on the AIA National Board of Directors. While on the board, he chaired the AIA Board Knowledge Committee and AIA Public Outreach Committee as well as co-chaired the AIA COVID-19 Business Task Force. He also served as president of the Texas Society of Architects in 2011. After more than three decades as a practicing architect and engineer, Hart is a principal and executive vice president of architecture at Parkhill — a 450-person architecture and engineering firm headquartered in Texas — and serves on the firm’s board of directors. He has experience designing religious and educational buildings and has masterplanned a variety of campuses. His wife is JENNIFER L. HART (BS ’92 English, M.Ed. ’97 Curriculum and Instruction).

1993 J. BRENT GOUDARZI (BA Political Science, JD ’96 Law) Longview, Texas, served as lead trial counsel for the single largest wrongful death verdict in the history of U.S. jurisprudence. A nearly six-year long quest for justice ended when a state district court jury awarded a total of $730 million to the surviving children of a 73-year-old Pittsburg, Texas, woman who was killed while driving from one church service to another. Brent has been voted the Truck Accident Lawyer of the Year by the National Law Journal and Trial Lawyer Magazine for the past three years.

1996 MATTHEW A. REITER (BBA Accounting, MS Accounting) Frisco, Texas, has been named the director of audit of Whitley Penn. Matthew is the partner in charge of Whitley Penn’s Plano office and in addition to serving clients he is the technical resource and quality control partner for the firm’s audit practice. He has extensive public accounting experience, auditing both public and private clients and focuses in the following industries: technology, healthcare, manufacturing and distribution, logistics and professional services.

He works as a civil engineer in the Lubbock office. He is also currently the seal coat program coordinator for Parkhill’s 2020 and 2021 programs. Jon has more than 11 years of experience in civil engineering for industrial projects and is an expert in industrial site development. PAUL S. KRUEGER (BS Civil Engineering) Lubbock, Texas, has been named a new licensee for Parkhill. Paul is a civil engineer in treatment practice with six years of experience, focused on water and wastewater treatment for industrial and municipal clients. His experience includes the design of new lift stations, pump stations, gravity sewer collection systems, facultative lagoon systems, evaporation ponds, potable water treatment and distribution networks and various rehabilitation projects for water and wastewater treatment facilities. Colorado’s weather changes fast! I have multiple weather apps on my phone, and I’m constantly cross-referencing them before photoshoots. Most of my clients want to avoid turbulent weather, so I try to reschedule if the forecast looks gloomy.

Last November, I decided to go on a location-scouting hike despite the blustery weather. My husband grew up in Colorado and always encourages me to ignore the forecast and go outside anyway. After all, the conditions change so quickly.

In this shot, we were rewarded with minimal crowds and a spectacular lenticular cloud that looked like a UFO! It’s a good reminder that nature is always beautiful, even when it’s not clear summer skies.

Frank Mitchell Jr. - Few Words, Big Heart Frank Mitchell Jr. lived a life devoted to family, country and Texas Tech.

His final gift honored his alma mater and his engineering professor.

The story of Mitchell’s career might read like a spy novel — if the notoriously tight-lipped engineer had let slip any of the details. Only a plaque from the National Security Agency and a handful of cryptic comments hinted at the years he spent listening to Russia during the Cold War. His love for Texas Tech University was another matter entirely. Texas Tech was always important to Mitchell because of his education and the faculty who mentored him as an electrical engineering student.

His willed gift was made in honor of C.V. Bullen, one of Mitchell’s professors and the first chairman of the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering. The gift benefited an endowment named in Bullen’s honor that awards scholarships to electrical and computer engineering students.

“His gift will touch hundreds of lives,” said Al Sacco Jr., dean of the Edward E. Whitacre Jr. College of Engineering. “I have nothing but admiration for him.”
